We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a

fabulous New Year

I would like to wish every one a very Merry Christmas and may 2014 be a fabulous year. As we all enjoy cosy nights by the fire, flickering fairy lights and the anticipation and build up of excitement for that very special visit. Lets support all our local businesses and shops and make this Christmas truely local.

Our December / January issue is a bumper issue with our first forty page magazine. I hope you enjoy our local contributors and offers. The February issue is already looking exciting and I am looking forward to bringing that to you in the New year.

We have a new competition this month, a New Year how about a ‘New You’ with award winning Lorraine Oates photography who has also supplied the editors photo and our lovely cover this month, Thank you Lorraine. I was the first to test out the make over experience and it really is good fun and I went out that night with very sparkly party make up which really was an artwork in itself. If you would like to share the experience then just fill in the entry form and send it to the address provided in Dalton and Good Luck!

Kick Start 2014 Have you achieved what you wanted to this year? Can you remember what your resolutions were for 2013? How much difference would it have made to you if you had set and achieved all your goals for this year?

As Christmas is knocking at the door, it’s the time of year when we focus on our loved ones, spend time getting together as a family, dash about buying gifts and get a few days off to enjoy it all. What if you could have more success in your career and a better balance in your life? As a coach, I have the fantastic job of helping people achieve just that.

Start-ups: Have you or your partner set up your own business in the past year? Congratulations on taking such an exciting step. So many people have great business ideas but let self-doubt and fear prevent them from making that first step. Working together, we can help you get really clear on why you want to be in business and what you want to achieve for yourself and your family. Having a really clear picture of why and what you want to achieve is great motivation for those days when self-doubts can come creeping in.

and overwhelm are often issues that clients setting up their businesses want help with. Having a one to one coach will help you work through barriers in order to come up with simple, easy solutions to ensure you get the spring back in your step and get your business flying in 2014.

Current businesses: I work with many clients who have already been in business for a couple of years and have achieved a certain level of success, and want to move the business forward to the next level. Common issues that clients bring are dealing with stress, difficulty in saying no, delegating and presenting with confidence. Clients have often lost that clear vision of why they are in business and are mired in the day to day mundanity of running it. I help clients gain some distance, so they can spend time on the business rather than in the business. Identifying what is going well and the next steps to move forward. What are you really good at? What resources are you lacking? Who do you know that can help?

Employers: Motivated, confident and competent staff are the backbone to the success of business growth. Having completed staff appraisals it can be more cost effective to support staff development through coaching to target specific development points such as confidence, time SO you have begun, maybe you are also juggling management, support in a change of role, part-time work or feel a little overwhelmed in communication skills and presenting with making countless decisions; dealing with stress confidence.

Career Development: Do you want to achieve a promotion in 2014? Do you need more clarity over your career path? I can help you identify your current skills and resources, as well as recognise your current skills gaps...So what's the first step to take to bridge that gap and move one step closer to achieving your dream job?

So if you received a voucher for coaching sessions for Christmas, what would you want to achieve? What would the benefit be to you and your loved ones to reach that business success? How will you feel to know you are on the right track to kick start 2014?

UNWIND WITH CLINIC AL MASSAGE & MYOFASCIAL RELEASE

Your body can be a well oiled machine, but unlike a car, it must last you a lifetime. At the body clinic we treat every 'body' as an individual and tailor each treatment to their needs.Your body is unique and precious; why not give it the treatment it deserves? At the Body Clinic we will: • listen to your story. • observe your body and how it moves • assess your needs • discuss a treatment plan

We then use the latest techniques in sports, clinical massage and Myofascial Release to ease your pain.

Fascia is the tough connective tissue in the body that holds us together. It surrounds every cell, muscle, bone, nerve, organ and blood vessel in the body. Normal, healthy fascia is fluid, allowing full, pain free movement. However, it is

My name is Liz Leech and I have been practicing Massage in Ulverston for five years, setting up my business with the help of a start up grant from Furness Enterprise. I introduced Myofascial Release into my practice 3 years ago, after studying at the Jing Institute Of Advanced Massage Training in Brighton. I genuinely love what I do and continue to seek out training opportunities to further enhance my treatment and keep up to date with developing research and new techniques.

common to develop fascial restrictions due to accidents, postural imbalances, repetitive movements, emotional trauma or stress. Myo = muscle Fascia = the main connective tissue in the body Release = to let go, ease pressure.

A treatment consists of: Heat: We use hot stones and a heated bed to enhance relaxation and soften the tissues before working on them. Fascia: Skin rolling, cross hand stretches, torquing, client movement, help to release the fascia. Massage: Specific work is done on muscles above and below the affected joint/s using techniques such as trigger point therapy, muscle energy technique and soft tissue release. Stretching: The fibres are then realigned using active, passive, active isolated or myofascial stretching. Teaching: We offer stretching or strengthening exercises and self massage techniques to do at home. The more you do for yourself, the quicker your body will heal.

Who is it for? Our treatments are effective whether you are young, old, sporty, stressed, pregnant, pre or post surgery, have RSI or are simply aching from over-doing it.

How many treatments will I need? It depends on you, your body and how you respond to the treatment. It is possible to get relief in one session but if you have been in pain for some time you may need a series of 6 treatments or more. We would expect increased ROM and reduced pain after 3, if not we would change our approach, suggest another discipline or refer you back to your GP. What does it cost? An initial treatment is ÂŁ50 for 90 minutes. Subsequent treatments are ÂŁ40 for a clinical hour (of which 50 minutes is treatment)

The practice was started 40 years ago by Bryan Redhead who is a qualified chartered accountant.

We offer a friendly and affordable service and undertake all aspects of accounting and taxation such as accounts preparation, self assessment tax returns, limited company formation and financial statements, corporation tax returns, company secretarial, value added tax returns, payroll, bookkeeping, fee protection insurance, business start ups and advice, management accounts.

We also offer a collection and drop off service, so, if you prefer not to travel to Broughton, it is not a problem, we will collect your records.

The first consultation is free of charge and can be done either at our offices, or your office or home, whichever is easiest for you.

We have clients located mainly in the Furness area but also have clients further afield and abroad which may seem strange for a small practice but clients who have moved abroad and have property rentals in the UK, still have to do a self assessment return, so, still use us as their accountants and with the technology we have today, this is not a problem.

Autumn Mediterranean Sunshine

I’m back in the office refreshed after a lovely dose of sunshine. And who’d have thought it, in Majorca, in October / November. Well, I thought it was a risk but fortunately it didn’t turn out to be. With daily temperatures in the mid 20’s and just the one afternoon drowned in showers and electrical storms, this Mediterranean climate lived up its expectations. Northern Majorca is just fabulous – situated between Alcudia and Puerto Pollensa, a reliable and inexpensive bus service allowed us to travel between the old towns of Alcudia and Pollensa, and the coastal areas of Puerto Pollensa without crowds, allowing us to experience the real Spain. The area is also a haven for sports enthusiasts – cycling and walking being top of the list as there are many trails to be enjoyed. For those preferring water to land, wind surfing, kite surfing and sailing are also possible in this area. We hired a car for the day and drove to Palma, dominated by the beautiful cathedral overlooking the harbour, to enjoy a bite size piece of what’s on offer; fantastic shopping, traditional tapas outlets whilst taking in the beautiful buildings than don the narrow streets and large squares. A visit to Majorca is not complete if you don’t visit the capital. By early November the tourist areas are closing so the locals can kick back and enjoy warm but quieter days after a busy summer season. October to January is still warm and should not be ruled out for a more reasonably priced alternative to the Canary Islands for an October half term break. Palma continues to welcome people through the Winter and makes a great weekend break destination. It had been some time since I’d been and Majorca got a big tick from me! No doubt, post Christmas many of you will turn your thoughts to the year ahead and where you might want to take your holidays. January is the peak time for this, but I will be working right up to Christmas and my best bit of advice for you this month is; If you know you want to have a holiday next year, why not beat the crowds and ask me to start working on this now for you? You have more chance of getting the holiday you desire, at a great price, before the phones start ringing off the hook in the New Year. Please do get in touch if you would like to talk further. Until then, I wish you and your families an enjoyable festive season and I look forward to returning in the New Year!

Help required in Ulverston

December. It’s the end of the year and thoughts are all of the festive season. Shopping, parties and the several Christmas dinners at home; Granny’s, the other Granny’s, Aunties, Uncles etc… Then comes the New Year and the big decision, which New Year resolution to make and inevitably break? Gym membership, quit drinking, smoking, chocolate? Walk to work; get the kids up in time for school, (never going to happen in this household)? Well, how about something different? Ulverston as you will know has festivals throughout the year; Dickensian, Candlelit walk, Lantern procession, walking festival, St Georges day,The Good life festival, to name but a few. These festivals are run by many volunteers and this is where you come in! Why not volunteer for one or more of the events. Whether it be shaking a bucket, Meeting and greeting visitors or helping out on the set up of stalls. Any help is gratefully welcomed. A lot of the events have Facebook pages which you can get information on how to help, others have their own websites. My personal favourite the Lantern Procession will be holding a meeting at the Coronation Hall on the 7th of January at 7:30pm. So go on, do something different this coming year – many of the festivals cannot run without the ongoing help and hard-work from members of our local community.

Walking in a Woolly Wonderland “I realize that when I met you at the turkey curry buffet, I was unforgivably rude, and wearing a reindeer jumper” Mark Darcy “Bridget Jones Diary” by Helen Fielding

So many things have changed during the 14 years since Bridget Jones fell in love with Mark Darcy. Topping the list, Christmas jumpers, as donned by Darcy in the first Bridget Jones book, have escaped from Granny’s knitting bag, waltzed past irony and naffdom and hit the actual catwalks. In 2013 Christmas jumpers are a fashion statement and if Bridget were to happen upon Darcy today, she would probably swoon at the reindeer crossing his chest and likely ask him where he got it from.

And thank goodness! Christmas jumper wearing is possibly one of the most practical fashion fads to have ever graced the northern hemisphere. Gone are the days when a party dress was top of the yuletide shopping list, thankfully to be replaced with something that will keep you both warm and cheerful when you find you can’t afford to put the central heating on. Indeed, nothing makes you say ho ho ho as much as reindeer prancing through a Fair Isle woolly winter wonderland.

Fair Isle has become a bit of a generic term to describe any multi-coloured patterned knitwear which includes a geometric arrangement of snowflakes but of course it originates from one the UK’s most remote islands situated between Orkney and Shetland. Knitting has long been an important source of income to the women of Fair Isle and, whilst they remain the custodians of this woollen art today, many believe it was passed to them by sea faring traders. In particular some think that when a Spanish Armada ship was shipwrecked off Fair Isle in 1588 the 300 sailors marooned on the Island for 6 weeks shared their knitting skills with the inhabitants who took them in.

22

So why are we charmed by these festive jumpers? Getting to Fair Isle is a bit of a struggle it being far north of John www.thepinfold.com

O’Groats and reachable only by a small 8-seater plane or the 12-seater island mail boat from Shetland. Neither voyage sounds appealing to the fair-weather traveller and so perhaps a jolly jumper can fulfil a romantic longing to visit the windswept wild isle where the population of birds and sheep far outweigh the people.

Yet it is not only in the pursuit of nostalgia that we seem to need to channel our inner Christmas tree with knitwear, but also for fun and cheer. Christmas jumper wearing is a well-established tradition in Canada and the U.S and almost like a sport. Jumpers just can’t be festive enough and

Christmas fans try to outwear each other with the ugliest Christmas jumper possible at an Ugly Christmas Jumper Party….it’s an actual thing and there are even books written on the subject!

Here in the UK you too can now join in the fun on our annual Christmas Jumper Day, the 13th December. By wearing novelty knitwear and donating to Save the Children you can “make the world better with a sweater”.

Lakes Legal Limited How to choose your Executors

When you write your will one of the first things you must consider is who you will appoint to be you executor(s). Your executor(s) are the people named by you in your Hannah Elizabeth Bell LLB Director will to carry out your instructions Photo: Lorraine Oates following your death. Commonly your executors will also take on the role of trustees under the terms of your will, but you can appoint separate individuals to this role. It is therefore vital that you appoint the right people to this role. Your options: You can appoint as many executors as you want. However only four executors will be able to apply for a grant of probate following your death and so there is little point naming more than four executors in your will. Lakes Legal Limited advise clients to appoint a minimum of two executors, in case one was unable to act, and a maximum of four but the choice is entirely yours. Who should you appoint? When it comes to choosing your executors there are many considerations you need to make. Commonly Lakes Legal Limited advise clients to consider the following: • The size and complexity of your estate; you need to appoint someone who is able to deal with the administration of your estate. • If you have minor children, you need to appoint someone you trust to look after any money left to them. • You need to trust the persons you are appointing to deal with your estate in accordance with your will. • If there is any potential for dispute over your estate you need to consider how best to avoid costly litigation to safe guard your beneficiaries. Appointing appropriate executors can do this. There are three types of Executors you could appoint: Trust Corporation You could appoint a Trust corporation as one of your executors, such as your bank. This would be appropriate if you for example held a number of shareholdings as your bank might have a specialist knowledge in this field. However banks and other trust corporations can levy hefty fees for administering your estate and the person who manages your assets is unlikely to be personally known to you. Professional Legal Advisers Professional legal advisers have the benefit of vast experience in administering estates and so are effective at bringing the administration to an early conclusion. Unlike banks and trust corporation you are likely to know

the professional legal advisor you appoint to manage your estate after your death. They are likely to be the one who you instructed in the preparation of your will and they will have an insight into what your personal wishes were when you wrote it. Additionally professional advisor’s offer an independent perspective when administering your estate. Professional advisor’s do charge for their time spent completing the administration of your estate but their fees are comparatively lower than those charged by banks and trust corporations. Lay Friends Family You can simply appoint friends and family members to administer your estate. Lay people generally do not charge for their time spent administering an estate, they usually do it out of love for the person who has died. Lay people lack the experience a professional advisor can offer but they know the person who has died and they usually know their chosen beneficiaries too! This personal knowledge can be invaluable when administering a deceased’ s estate. Public Trustee If you have no one else to appoint under the above categories you can opt to appoint the public trustee. This should however be considered as a last resort. You can choose to appoint a mixture of different executors to administer your estates. It is common to appoint a lay person and a professional advisor so that each can bring their personal quality’s to the administration of your estate. Lakes Legal Limited offers a comprehensive Fixed-Fee will writing service so you know exactly how much it is going to cost you from the very beginning; No hidden costs and No VAT! Single Wills £75.00 and Couples Wills £125.00 Why not call 01229 47 18 71 now for a one hour fee free consultation. “Lakes Legal Limited; a professional service at an affordable price from the comfort of your own home”

From Handles to Lock Systems, we stock or source any part, for any windows or doors, installed in the last 20yrs - maybe that’s why both DIY enthusiasts AND other local repair engineers come to us for their replacement parts.

Do you really start a job without asking for a deposit? Absolutely - it’s a trust thing! We endeavour not to take any deposit for works ordered, and do not invoice for works carried out, until completed in full.

And finally the BIG question ‘how competitive are your prices?’ This ones easy. Call into our showroom for friendly, helpful advice. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how little we charge for quality products and skilled, professional services ‘trust us, we’re local and we’re good at what we do!’

‘...ASK THE GAFFER’

How can you compete with those annoying national window companies who are constantly telling us to ‘BOGOF’? We believe the people of Dalton and the surrounding area aren't taken in by such marketing gimmicks and are aware that, ‘you don’t get anything for nothing!’ We never use such sales-gimmicks.

‘Windows doors and so much more’, what’s that all about? We get so frustrated by the amount of times we hear folk say, ‘I didn’t know you did that?’. From Garage Doors to Car Ports - to Fascias and Fittings, we stock the lot. Our ‘Repair Service’ could save you replacing expensive products!

If you have any queries about windows and doors - whether you want to secure your existing door or if you’re looking for advice on state of the art windows - call 829516 or send your email to anthony@aholdens.co.uk

Food and the meaning of Christmas and to some it means nothing at all. To me, Christmas means a few things above all others It means food, and lots of it, family and loved ones, But it also means work, socks and underpants but we not going there.

Every family has it’s quirks, it’s traditions and habits, every family is made up of a group of painfully unique people who are frequently pulling in opposite directions, who have one thing in common – a shared love and care for each other’s well-being.

It is an opportunity for people of all ages to stop and think about the priorities in your life, about the people that matter most. This is why Christmas can be a painful time for some people because they see other people’s happiness at a time of bad memories and loss. This is also why Christmas is a time for family and friends. No-one should be alone over This enthusiasm for food and for eating I have Christmas. gained from my mum and my aunties. Every year ,the week before Christmas my auntie For a lot of people Christmas is a celebration Luzia ’the Sargent’ as we used to call her and of the birth of Jesus Christ. For some people my auntie Sao would normally be on a weeks this is hugely important and others it is holiday from work and would spend the whole nothing more than a footnote in history, week preparing the cakes, pastries and all the Christmas is a time for making an effort to be food that would be served on Christmas day . with those who are important to us. My auntie Sao still makes the best roasted Here at Ford Park we will be welcoming potatoes that I ever tasted everyone with a smile and perhaps even with Christmas means many things to different a hug during the Christmas seasons ‘Feliz people. For some it evokes memories of a Natal’ happy childhood, others loneliness and pain

Over the years my enthusiasm for good food and good ingredients has managed to "convince a few people that with fresh ingredients, a little imagination, and some good music playing in the background, ‘and you can always have a dance while cooking’ anyone can cook great meals and enjoy it too!

Capital d is a new children’s designer and high street label clothing shop, with great prices located on Market Street in Dalton-in-Furness. Jackie Davenport knows all about the need to find good value but high quality clothes for youngsters.

The mother of three and qualified nursery nurse opened a stall on Barrow market five months ago, despite the response from customers not being as encouraging as she had hoped Mrs Davenport who lives in Marton, took the plunge to move into premises on the high street in Dalton.

After a lot of research in the area, Dalton proved to be the ideal location with five schools and a busy high street.

However Capital d is much more than just a shop it’s becoming a hub for the community! With daily craft workshops taught by Malisicrafts own talented teacher Marion in our own craft workroom.

Capital d has an Art Gallery where local artists can showcase and sell their work; other products available for sale within Capital d include ladies wear, handbags, wool and patterns, baby shower gifts, wedding gifts and accessories, unique wedding stationary can be ordered, and a selection of Avon products.

ell life has come full circle again and the world is putting itself into hibernation for the winter, wrap up, stay warm and stay well. Over the past 18 months in the Pinfold I have covered healthy breakfasts, little black dresses, winter wellness, long term health, change and challenges, plus a few more things besides. I sat here initially thinking what could I write about that was new and interesting and exciting about wellbeing? I wracked my brains went through 4 years of blogs, watched a few videos, reflected on winning the Eva’s for my contribution to wellbeing in my community and you know what, there is nothing new. The fundamentals of wellbeing are the same now as they were when your grandparents and great grandparent were alive. Wellbeing is a way of life it is not a coincidence. It is no coincidence that my friends call me tigger occasionally or that I am full of health and vitality. I choose to be that way, if I am ill I don’t go to the Dr’s and say make me feel better, I ask myself why my body has succumbed to this, what have I done, what can I do to get better and prevent it next time. Have I let myself get too tired, running around doing too much, late nights, alcohol, stress, poor food choices or is it a virus/bug in which case why is my body’s defence system low enough to let it in. I take responsibility and look after me all of the time and feel great because of that. I take

nutritional supplements (Herbalife are my preferred of course) I plan a balanced food intake, I exercise and I learn. So for those of you who may not have been getting the Pinfold and reading my blogs and are not up to speed on how to be healthy. Some reminders from the past year. Water, water, water you need to drink this stuff So why is water so important? Water is vital in order for our bodies to function; it lubricates eyes and joints, flushes out toxins and waste, and keeps our skin healthy. Our bodies contain a large amount of water; in fact about two-thirds of our body weight is water. However, we need it all losing just one percent of our body weight due to fluid loss can cause dehydration and any more than that can lead to serious medical complications. And remember we're constantly losing water, by sweating or urinating, so by drinking we're keeping our supplies topped up. PROTEIN Achieving your protein target will help you: • Feel less hungry • Build lean muscle tissue • Reduce body fat • Control your blood sugars more effectively • Boost your energy • LOSE WEIGHT! Eating a healthy breakfast is the way to start your day. Want to change your body in 2014 to a better model. Join me, I’ll be taking people on a journey of discovering what it takes to have a healthier and happier body. Why not join us. A course will run in the new year in Ulverston, registration between Christmas and new year. Taking names now, book your place. Trials packs available when you book your place.
