ICONIC ENERGY CO-OPERATIVE ON OUR DOORSTEP!
Local Energy Co-operative Baywind was the first community wind farm in the UK. Six turbines were built near Ulverston at Harlock Hill in 1996 and a further turbine was acquired at Haverigg. Share offers in the mid 90s enabled Baywind to raise £2 million from the general public to buy the turbines. Those people became members of the co-operative and have received returns from the sale of electricity from the turbines, averaging 6% to 8% per year. Who’s involved? Baywind was founded by seven individuals from Ulverston and Barrow, who formed the initial board of directors. The current directors bring skills and experience from a range of backgrounds, including engineering, accountancy and marketing. Baywind has over 1300 members, all shareholders in the co-operative; many of them are from Cumbria. The board is elected by the whole membership at the AGM. High Winds - Repowering Harlock Hill The new turbines - two modern high power, high output turbines are expected to be operational in 2016. High Winds Community Energy Society Ltd will be raising funds through another share issue, to build the two new turbines. Local people will be able to invest from as little as £100 to become members in this new venture. To register your interest please visit www.energy4all.co.uk Looking to the future To encourage more community owned wind farms, Baywind formed a development company, Energy4All Ltd. Energy4All is based in Barrow in Furness with development staff working throughout the UK. Energy4All is owned by Baywind, and the other Energy Co-ops which it has helped to create.

New Head Chef at The Coach House, Ford Park Planning tasty daily specials around seasonal availability comes with challenges, but it’s familiar ground for Head Chef Ben Queen-Fryer who recently took the helm at The Coach House Café & Bistro at Ford Park, Ulverston.
Just the other side of the well-used path that leads to Hoad Monument, passing the bistro, is a walled Victorian Kitchen garden. Lovingly restored and tended by volunteers and staff, it’s this place that provides much of the fresh produce that Ben and his team work with. “It’s the freshest you can get hold of and it changes daily, bringing something new and interesting to the menu. You have to be a little bit inventive, and come up with lots of new ideas” he admits. One of Ben’s recent challenges was how best to use a glut of sorrel, “I made pesto, that was the best thing for it”.Today’s harvest of kale will be braised with fennel seeds and chilli flakes to accompany gnocchi and baby carrots to be served with rabbit ravioli. Little goes to waste at the Coach House. Edible flowers regularly adorn dishes and Ben explains how this years bumper crop of pears from the orchard has been transformed into pear and sultana chutney – a jar of which would make the perfect Christmas gift for foodie friends.

Fennel and Chilli Kale Serves 4
300g kale (shredded roughly) 2 garlic cloves (finely sliced) 3tsp fennel seeds 1tsp chilli flakes Extra virgin olive oil Salt
Firstly set a heavy bottomed pan on a low heat and add 4 tbsp of olive oil. With a pestle and mortar or a spice grinder mix the fennel seeds and chilli flakes to a fine powder. Add the garlic to the pan and fry until it begins to colour. Add 1 ½ tsp of the chilli and fennel mixture to the pan and fry for a further 30 seconds. Add the kale to the pan with 100ml of water, cover with a lid and cook on a low temperature for around 20-30 minutes. Keep stirring every 5 minutes. Remove the lid season and check the kale, it should be dark in colour and give very little resistance when chewing. If a little too chewy return to the pan replace the lid and cook for a further 5-10 minutes. www.thepinfold.com

FILL YOUR BOOTS
There are 26 bones in your foot, 33 joints, more than a hundred tendons, ligaments and muscles and over 250,000 sweat glands that produce about 500ml of perspiration daily. This incredible anatomical structure is responsible for your entire body weight and will thank you if you keep it warm and protect it from the scuffing and buffing of shoes. Likewise your shoes won’t half be glad if you spare them of all that sweat.
Fluffy, silk, wool or nylon, patterned or plain and often mismatched your socks are an essential part of your outfit that have their work cut out just keeping the peace between your feet and your shoes. Your socks could potentially save you from blisters, sores, athlete’s foot maybe even frostbite and, lets be honest, they look good too.
What a genius invention these socks are but by no means a new one. It was about the 8th century BC that man decided his feet would be better off with some kind of liner and folks have been pulling their socks up ever since.
In those days of course there were no knitted socks or bed fluffies; people had to make do with animal skins gathered around their ankles with a bit of matted animal hair if they were lucky. Woven socks and woollen hose evolved with the passage of time as did the knowledge that warm dry feet will improve the overall quality of life. Attitudes to sock wearing through history have changed too. At the turn of the 1st century AD they were considered a sign of weakness if worn by men who were not in the military yet hundreds of years later they were considered a symbol of affluence with silk and knitted

stockings being a gift exchanged between royalty.
The glorious Interweb also tells us that China is responsible for about 40% of global sock production. Nevertheless, despite all their hard work, they aren’t responsible for any of the socks we sell at Two by Two. Our fashionably mismatched Solmate Socks are made in Vermont, USA from recycled cotton; our Seasalt Fluffies are made in Turkey from recycled plastic bottles and our Seasalt Sailor Socks are made from bamboo. Our famous Fair Isle Christmas Socks are of course knitted by Elves with organic wool, in the North Pole, where else? Pop into Two by Two this season to see the full range.
Until Medieval times socks were mainly worn for protection from the cold and from forest undergrowth. Little thought was given to the fashion of sock wearing and the wearing of socks and sandals was rife especially amongst the Romans. The Tudors, however, saw the style potential of socks and it was during this era and the centuries that followed that stockings became a key garment particularly for men who For further news in socks don’t forget to visit wore them with breeches. They favoured The Daily Sock Forecast at twobytwoonline.com elaborate socks with stripes often worn from toe to waist and with exaggerated toes. It must have been a sight to behold.

The humble sock does indeed do a marvellous 52 Market Street Ulverston LA12 7LS job but it has its own way of keeping us on our toes. Every year a gazillion socks are lost into the odd sock ether. Who knows where they go or where they end up? Some say that they disappear into a wormhole that opens up during the spin cycle on your machine; others say that your pets just eat them. According to the Internet missing socks can cost £240 a year per household and a family of four will loose up to 60 socks a year! Leven Valley Support Group for St Marys Hospice held an enchanting evening of songs
Leven Valley Support Group for St Marys Hospice held an enchanting evening of songs sung by the male voice quartet “Voce” which are Barrows answer to Il Divo on Fri 21st November 2014 in The Café Ambio, Haverthwaite. The evening commenced with a look around The Lakeland Motor Museum which had been provided free by Les Micklethwaite and included in the ticket price.
The Furness four piece then treated the audience of a 100+ to a variety of music in a classical style which included songs by Bocelli, The Rightous Brothers, Josh Groban, Leona Lewis and many others. During the break there was a “Guess the Weight of The Xmas Cake” which was donated by Andrew Southcott Catering. After refreshments had been served Voce continued the evening and ended with the group singing The Impossible Dream which had the audience spellbound!
Andrew Southcott Catering waived his fee for the evening which helped us raise a magnificent amount of £850 for the hospice. The Support Group would like to thank everyone for their kind generosity and for their continuous support.

Leven Valley Fundraising Support Group for St Marys Hospice works very hard voluntarily throughout the year doing different events solely raising funds for St Marys Hospice Ulverston and this year have managed to raise enough money to buy a brand new much needed car for the hospice through the very kind generosity of the local people in our and surrounding areas who continuously support us by buying tickets to our events etc and also the generosity of the local businesses who give us raffle prizes etc and of course Guy Perry Ltd, Barrow in Furness who supplied the car at a much discounted price to us.
The car was presented to the hospice on Friday the 7th November 2014.
We wish to thank you all for your very kind generosity and all your continuous support and a Merry Christmas and Joyous New year.
