This months issue has more good legal advice and our travel counsellor has been busy as skiing is so popular at this time of year while others just crave for an escape to warmer climes.
There's an interesting delve into hypnosis, some fabulous new business premises, and a new sport is taking off in our area. Valentines - Healthy Hearts Love Longer
The Lowdown on FATS, helping you look after your heart As many of our regular readers know, much of the work I do is in weight management and sports performance, sometimes our mind needs to shift it’s focus, how often have you heard someone say, as soon as I mention the word “diet” all I want to do is eat? So today let us make that shift and what better month to be doing it in than February the month of love. If you look after your heart and concentrate on having a healthy heart you will pretty much be living and eating a healthy balanced life which is what we want you to do to lose weight. So instead of going on another diet in February as the one you started in January didn’t work. Lets look at loving and living longer and taking care of your heart.
The basics then: • Increasing your fibre intake by eating plenty of fruit & veg. • Drinking eight glasses of water a day • Taking regular exercise and living an active life. • Eating good fats such as fish oils or using a supplement such as Herbalifeline. • Limiting your salt intake. • Reducing cholesterol and reducing your intake of fatty foods. • If you smoke, then quit or at least
4
cut down. • Make some time each week to relax and try to avoid stress.
The issue of dietary fat is probably one of the most confusing to people. Should you eat as little as possible? More of the “good” fats? The answer lies somewhere in between. Ideally, you want to eat only the amount that you need to add flavour to foods, and of the fats you eat, you want to select the healthiest ones. All fats, regardless of their source, are about 120 calories a tablespoon, so most people can’t (and shouldn’t) eat them freely. Here are some things to remember: • Fats are categorised as saturated, polyunsaturated or monounsatured, depending on the predominant fatty acid they contain. • Generally speaking, saturated fats (found in animal products like meats, cheese and ice cream as well as hydrogenated vegetable oils) tend to raise blood cholesterol levels. The process of hydrogenating oils, which makes them harder at room temperature, produces trans-fatty acids –which also raise blood cholesterol and should be avoided. • Polyunsaturated fats can be “good” or “bad,” depending on whether they are primarily Omega-6 fats or Omega-3 fats. • While small amounts of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are called “essential,” meaning our bodies can’t make them, the amounts required are very small and can be met from plant products, which have a good balance of the two fats. • Our diet is typically overloaded with Omega-6 fatty acids, with inadequate
www.thepinfold.com
amounts of Omega-3. • Monounsaturated fats, found in olive oil and avocado. These fats are “healthy” fats and can be eaten in moderation. • Olive oil is a healthy alternative oil for cooking at a light to moderate heat or used cold. If the flavour is too strong for you, you can purchase “light” olive oils which have the same calories as regular olive oil, but are lighter in flavour.
To reduce overall fat intake: • Try using cooking sprays when you sauté foods, or you can sauté in wine or stock. • Use reduced-fat versions of high-fat items, such as dairy products, spreads and dressings. • If you are watching calories, keep in mind that low-fat or fat-free versions of baked goods often have the same amount of calories as the full-fat version. In many cases, fat is replaced with sugar which drives up the calories. • Avoid fatty meats high-fat ground meats, chops and sausages. Eat more poultry
breast, fish, shellfish, egg whites, low-fat dairy products and soy products for protein, which have much less fat than red meats. • Avoid farmed salmon, if possible. Farmed salmon is fattier than wild salmon, but the extra fat it contains is not the “good” fat. Despite myths to the contrary, shellfish is not high in cholesterol, and is an excellent source of protein that is very low in fat. • Flavour foods with herbs, spices, lemon, onions, garlic, chiles and other seasonings rather than relying on heavy sauces, gravies and butter.
Remember to exercise that heart muscle everyday with lots of Love, Hugs and Smiles For more help or advice call Linda 015395 60313.
Smart new offices ready for tenants The re-development of one of the area’s most iconic buildings, known as The Clock Tower, has created office accommodation for bright sparks wanting to reduce their carbon footprint, escape traffic and city and town parking issues and remove the stress of commuting.
The building, which has been home to a seventeenth century forge, an ironworks, and a historically important gunpowder site that was closed by ICI in the mid 1930s, has been sympathetically restored and is now a home for eight office units, ranging in size from 200 to 1200 square feet. They are all housed within the oldest part of the building, which dates from its time as a forge (circa 1720). A total of 5000 square feet of office accommodation has been created in phase one of a two-phase project. The development is the brainchild of the property owner Julius Barratt, whose vision is to create an office complex that will inspire professionals working in sectors driving today’s SME economy. His family ties with the site have inspired him to put in the investment necessary to save a building that could otherwise have been lost to the local landscape.
The new offices are ideally suited to those working in industries such as information technology, architecture and design, marketing, consultancy and financial services. The site is peaceful, stress-free and even encompasses a woodland walk

and picnic area for those wishing to enjoy the country environment during their lunch hour.
The Clock Tower sits next to the River Leven – a crucial power and transportation source for its activities throughout the centuries.
The most modern technology is used when it comes to energy efficiency and power usage. The offices are warmed by ‘green power’ generated by the River Leven, a reverse Archimedes screw-driven turbine, a heat exchanger and a water source heat pump, and yet tenants will still be able to appreciate features of the building dating back as far as its time as a forge and furnace. Julius Barratt says:“The Clock Tower is a building that needed a purpose and it can now become home to those who want their imagination to be sparked by the history and ambience of their working environment and businesses seeking office accommodation with a heritage and personality that will impress clients and associates”.
Enquiries about renting office accommodation can be made to Dickon Knight MRICS on 015395 58555 or email: dickon@ipcel.co.uk.

Hypnosis – some good press for a change slow and any stress drifts away. If you are willing to follow the hypnotist’s instructions, nothing will stop you going into a comfortable trance. And once you are in trance, you can be helped to make all sorts of positive changes.
I
f you have seen a stage hypnotist at work, you could be a little scared of being hypnotised yourself. Of course it’s sensible to avoid any chance of dancing in your underpants or kissing a beer bottle! I might be wary myself, if it weren’t for that fact that, as a hypnotist for twenty years, I know that a stage hypnotist’s success depends upon volunteers going along with his act.
One of the best-kept secrets about hypnosis is what a pleasurable experience it can be. When you are hypnotised, you become calm, your breathing slows, even time seems to

Hypnosis enabled me stop smoking and lose my allergy to cats. Indeed, trance has been so helpful that I studied and became a hypnotherapist. Now, as well as working with people to help them with a wide variety of issues such as anxiety, pain, unwanted habits and how to lead a happier life, I train others to become hypnotists too.
I run regular one-day workshops and courses near Ulverston (see www.futureseeing.com for details or call 01229 583750). Hypnosis can be a lot of fun. In my experience, it is also a wonderful way to change your life for the better.

The Rotary Club of Furness Peninsula Dress to impress THE PROMS
Delighted Prom goers found a dress to impress at the recent fair held by the Rotary Club of Furness Peninsula at Deemon Dance Studios in Barrow. A wide range of over 80 pre-owned dresses of differing styles and colours, complimented by a nail art specialist and jeweller, tempted local young ladies to buy at affordable prices, whilst allowing the sellers a forum to receive an immediate payment and to contribute to charities supported by the club. Rotarian Angela Fryer said ‘We received a very positive response from sellers, many of whom felt it a pity that their dresses may not be worn again. The young ladies who found an item were delighted, and as a result the club has decided to run a similar event next season’. The next event will be held in the spring of 2014, and will be advertised.

for all your travel needs
Already a month into the New Year and may I wish you all a very happy one!
Well, it seems we were let off quite lightly here with the snow; however that’s not to say the airports didn’t suffer and we saw many flights cancelled as a result of planes being in the wrong location.
Being there when you need me
I had customers heading off to Australia at the end of January only to find that with less than 24 hours to go their connecting flight from Manchester to London was cancelled as a result of the snow. So on Saturday afternoon (whilst out and about) I rebook them on alternative flight, all sorted within the hour. Sunday morning came, I checked the flight status again to find the new flight was also now cancelled so called the clients immediately and advised them on alternative arrangements to get to London in time to connect with their flight. We cannot control the weather or the effect is has on travel, but when I say I provide 24/7 support I really do mean it. I wonder if those who booked those same flights on the internet had the same experience and were able to speak to their travel consultant immediately.
Aside from this, January has been exceptionally busy as predicted with people getting ahead for Easter and summer breaks. It seems the current TV programmes on Africa, which I highly recommend if you get chance;Wednesday evening BBC 1 – Africa, narrated by David Attenborough and Channel 5 - Charley Boorman’s South African Adventure, both 9pm and are really whetting people’s appetites for safari and I have one of those enquiries to work on. And to give you some idea of how diverse my business is, this month I have booked a ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam and a trip on the Queen Mary 2 from New York to Southampton.
Finally, the Winter 2013 edition of our magazine ‘The World of Travel Counsellors’ is now available electronically. If you’d like a copy, please contact me as below. Bye for now,

A week in the life of a white shirt “An empty canvas is a living wonder……far lovelier than certain pictures” Wassily Kandinsky
It’s true that sometimes the simple things appeal the most which is perhaps why the simple white shirt, often described as a blank canvas which allows the wearers character to shine though, has stood the test of time and remains a wardrobe staple for men and women of any age.
Apparently the oldest white shirt in history was found in a first dynasty Egyptian tomb in Tarken and dates back to 3000BC. It was made of linen and although it is claimed it was white it is unlikely it was a crisp white when it was found.
Up to The Middle Ages the white shirt was a cuff less, collarless, tunic worn mainly as an undergarment for the purpose of hygiene. In the 1500’s a detachable collar was added and worn for display, but it wasn’t until the 18th Century that the white shirt was worn as a piece of clothing in its own right. During the 19th century the shirt evolved into an elaborate garment with ruffles, and embellishments to the sleeves and collars which both became bigger as time went by. At this time of course shirts were made by hand by either wives or tailors and so white shirts were worn mainly by the wealthy and considered as a symbol of class. The modern shirt emerged following the 1st world war with buttons and a fixed collar and later, short sleeves and chest pockets. It was also around this time that Coco Chanel revolutionised clothing for women and a white shirt became a wardrobe staple for them too. A loose

white shirt was not only a comfortable change for women so used to wearing corsets but also a practical solution for those joining an expanding workforce.
Over the course of time, despite the upgrades, the white shirt has lost none of its appeal and can be suitable for almost any occasion.A crisp white shirt is a true chameleon with the ability to be smart with a suit, casual with jeans, interesting under a dress and perfect with knitwear.
Less is more when it comes to a white shirt, there are beautiful detailed ones available but the simpler it is, the more versatile and useful it will be. At Two by two we sell this simple cotton shirt by Oui for £45 in sizes 8-20. For more fashionable fun check out thefashionfruitcake.blogspot.co.uk

Enduring Powers of Attorney
Hannah Elizabeth Bell LLB Director
An Enduring Power of Attorney is a document by which the maker or the Donor appoints a person or people to act as their Attorney(s) on their behalf.
An Attorney once appointed is treated in law as if they are the Donor. This means they can sign cheques on behalf of the Donor, open/close bank accounts, buy/sell property and generally deal with the Donors finances as if they were the Donor.
Photo: Powder & Paint Photography
The use of the word Enduring in the title of this document relates to the lifespan if the appointment of the Attorney. Under General Powers of Attorney an Attorney is appointed for a fixed period of time or a maximum of 12 months. An Enduring Power of Attorney allows the Donor to appoint their Attorney indefinitely. This is particularly important for elderly Donors as it allows them to rest assured that their Attorney will remain appointed for so long as they are alive.
An Enduring Power of Attorney unlike a General Power of Attorney also continues even after the Donor has lost mental capacity. This means that if the Donor develops Alzheimers or another degenerative disease which means they are no longer able to deal with their property and finances they can rely on their pre-appointed Attorney to do this for them.
Once created the Enduring Power of Attorney is immediately effective. However once the Donor loses the mental capacity to understand that the Attorney is using the Enduring Power of
18
Attorney it must be registered with the Office of the public Guardian.
In the wake of the Harold Shipman murders the government reviewed the provision of Powers of Attorney and the Mental Capacity Act as a whole. As a result although existing Enduring Powers of Attorney remain valid, new Enduring Powers of Attorney can no longer be created. Instead the Government have developed a Lasting Power of Attorney which provides the same and additional benefits as the Enduring Power of Attorney.
The Lasting Power of Attorney has to be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before it can be used. Lakes Legal Limited can assist you with the registration of your Enduring Power of Attorney for the fixed fee of £100.00. Alternatively if you would like to prepare a Lasting Power of Attorney we can help for the fixed fee of £150.00 per document.

dogs were my family and my friends. This is their story as much as it is mine.”
Her school life was fun at times, traumatic and surprising at other times. She relates the difficulties of fitting in and choosing friends, making mistakes and putting things right again. A few surprises for the reader here, and a few chuckles.
My Animals and Other Family
Clare Balding published Sept 2012
Clare Balding’s prizewinning autobiography covers the first twenty or so years of her life. It describes her growing up surrounded by dogs, horses and an eccentric family. Each chapter is named after an animal that was significant to her and her family at that particular time in her life. To use her own words: “I had spent most of my childhood thinking I was a dog and I suspect I had aged in dog years. By the time that I was ten I had discovered the pain of unbearable loss. I had felt joy and jealousy. Most important of all I knew how to love and let myself be loved. All these things I learnt through animals. Horses and
22
Clare’s father was a very successful race horse trainer until his retirement, and as a result she grew up to be an outstanding horsewoman. At the age of two she is pictured on top of the Grand National winner Mill Reef. She eventually became a top amateur jockey herself, winning many races.
Clare Balding has been a familiar name to most of us for some years and is in fact often now referred to as a National Treasure. This, in my opinion, is thanks to her hard work, enthusiasm and the ability to entertain as well as commentate. She has been a presenter on radio and on many television programs. Her commentaries on the recent London Olympics were excellent and have made her a household name – they were enjoyable and informative whichever sport she was covering. She co-invented the Mo-bot, and who will ever forget seeing her introduce Bert to the nation – Unbelievable!!!! My Animals and Other Family is funny, frank, surprising and interesting. The reader does not need to be horsey or be a dog lover to enjoy this memoir; it is simply a pleasure to read. I am sure there is much more to be told and I hope Clare follows up with a continuation very soon. Happy Reading.....................
