MIKE HUGHES

It’s now since first started his Kitchen & Bedroom business, and with thousands of satisfied customers behind him, he still enjoys the challenge that each project brings. Today’s kitchen is not just a ‘back kitchen’ as it used to be where mum used to go to prepare the meals. It is today the Hub of the Home. It can be a meeting place for all the family, so meal preparation can be shared and enjoyed while still communicating with others too. Cooking is much more of an art today, with new exciting chefs around to guide us all. Mike Hughes offers the latest in energy saving built in appliances, specialising in Siemens and Neff who he trusts for quality, innovative technology, style, and aftersales service. Whether it is an island in your design, or a doorway and window moved, or perhaps even rooms opened up, they can arrange it all for you. Creating a modern design offering extra storage space and making your kitchen more accessible. The award winning business is made up of a loyal team of craftsman installers with many years of experience behind them, plus Mike and his wife Ann have recently trained new studio staff for the busy showroom. Mike still designs, and he project manages all the jobs. The attention to detail is of upmost importance on all their work. Design, styles, colour ways, lighting, tiling, are a lot to think about when making a purchase so Mike advises and works with customers so they achieve what they want. The modern Showrooms are on Park Road, Barrow-in-Furness, (look for the sign at the side of the road 500 yards after Kimberly Clarke on the approach to Barrow). They offer a selection of modern, contemporary, and traditional style Kitchens and a comfortable selection area. There are also beautiful Bedroom Displays showing options of interiors and styles. It’s well worth a visit. Opening hours are: - Monday- Friday 10.30am till 5.30pm and Saturday 9am till 3pm.

It’s a wild January day when I hit the road with Oubas Knitwear’s Kate Wilson in search of woollen words of wisdom. Following a second successful season of making knitwear in Ulverston, Kate wonders how her brand’s story might unfold in 2015. I suggest we visit Sophie of Dent who has been designing and making her Wild Woollens in the Dales for the last 33 years. With the Lakes behind us we cross the M6 and enjoy the undulating Yorkshire landscape that is the home and inspiration of Sophie’s Wild Woollens.

In 1982 Sophie, with no prior experience of wool or knitting, set out to continue the tradition of “The Terrible Knitters of Dent”, a reputation held by the 18th century townsfolk who knitted with amazing dexterity and speed. The men and children of the dale could knit as well as their women and not only that; they could knit with one hand whilst milking a cow with the other. In the tradition of their village ancestors, Sophie and her team of knitters today, create exceedingly good knitwear that is exported all over the world.

We find Sophie in her cosy studio, a haven of colour on a grim January day, in the aftermath of Christmas knitting exhaustion (Kate can concur- she was knitting almost up to Christmas Eve). With no time to spare she must now prepare for upcoming trade shows and new season forward orders and it’s during this catch up time that she often wonders why does she do it? Yet when we press her for an answer, she doesn’t hesitate “It’s for the people I work with, I just love my knitters”. Like Kate, Sophie started out knitting all day and washing all night, until she reached a point after several years where she could take on other knitters. Now she employs between 8 and 10 local women who work from their own homes. She’s found them all by word of mouth and some of them she has known for over 20 years. While we sip on our tea, one of the knitters calls on the phone excited to share that’s she’s cracked one of

10

sarah@thepinfold.com

the new blanket wrap designs Sophie has in store for Autumn Winter 2015…. “Once they get into it they get really excited” she reports.

We ask her how many new designs she produces a year and she tells us “Only 6 or 8, my designs are not high fashion, they evolve slowly over time, it’s the attention to detail that makes them special”. In the early days she experimented a lot with different yarns from Shetlands to Donegal’s to hemp, however, she felt these lacked body and that was why she started felting which has become the handprint of her collection.

Her garments are knit oversized and then washed, sometimes twice, in the machine. The heat and friction naturally felts the wool and reduces the garment to size. Sophie loves how you can’t see the stitches in felted wool. It looks like a fabric and is dense, warm and hardwearing. Each garment is finished off with her felted buttons.

We marvel at Sophie’s button making machine, a recent acquisition, before which all her buttons were made by rolling layers of felt into a sausage underfoot, each batch taking up to 10 hours. The felt sausage is then sliced to produce her trademark buttons. I’m interested how she is continually inspired to produce new designs yet surprisingly she claims “I’m not actually creative myself, or arty, but I’m good with colour and am inspired by light, particularly in the winter”.

Two hours have vanished before we know it.We head back out into the January gale enchanted by Sophie’s wild woollies and the stories that go with them. We’ve heard how Sophie keeps a Russian customer despite extortionate cost to export because it keeps one particular knitter busy through January and February and we’ve admired Sophie’s exciting new range in which layers of felt are bonded to knitwear by rolling it back and forth in the button machine. Kate is inspired to have met someone who has earned success through commitment to passion and local skill.

Sophie and her Patterdale Terrier Sid are well worth a visit at The Shop on the Green in Dent, where the tradition of knitting in Dent continues.

Love is all around…the world

It might be February and it might be approaching Valentine’s Day, but shouldn’t love extend longer than just one month? Shouldn’t it be about love all year round, wherever you are? I think so, but then again, I am an old romantic! If you want to spoil someone and need some inspiration here are a few ideas to tempt you: A UK break – not too far to travel and often combinable with rail travel. We have city breaks and country hotels with 2 night offers, Sunday night stay offers, Dinner, Bed & Breakfast offers and pre bookable extras too.You don’t always have to go on the 14th, why not give your loved one something to look forward to and take them away the day or week after? Or a little further afield you could head to the continent – Paris is the big favourite but let’s break with tradition as there are so many romantic places to stay without the premium prices. Some of my picks include Vienna, Iceland, Hamburg, Lisbon, or if you fancy the train then what about Bruges – all with plenty of culture and fantastic places to stay and eat. If you want to push the boat out – I’d recommend planning something for later in the year and heading to New York. Twin it with Boston and take the train between the two cities. See the lights and get some shopping done for Christmas in style, I see fab offers every few weeks for New York. And whatever you book, did you know that I offer a FREE concierge service for all my customers which includes booking restaurants, excursions, helping with surprises, and all those little extras to make your trip extra special and hassle free. The possibilities are endless, if you have an idea to run by me why not email me at sharon.matthews@travelcounsellors.com and I’ll give you a call.

Lakes Legal Limited New Years Resolutions

It’s that time of year again when many of us endeavour to make changes to improve our lives, be it hitting the gym, giving up smoking or resolving to make Hannah Elizabeth Bell LLB Director Photo: Lorraine Oates Photography more time for family and friends. I also find at this time of year that many people resolve to do things that they have been putting off, such as decorating the spare bedroom or committing to get their finances in order once and for all! If you fall into the latter category of resolutioners it may be that you have resolved to get your legal paperwork in order, so that you no longer have that niggling worry at the back of your mind and can dispel that ‘what if’ voice that gently whispers in your ear in the middle of the night. If this is you then well done, resolving to get these things in order is no mean feat, but do you know where to start? Here at Lakes Legal Limited we think a good starting point is to look at your needs in the round. A one-size-fits all approach is often not the right answer. In modern society there is no such thing as a ‘normal’ family, we are all different and we each have our own unique requirements. Once you have assessed what your needs are it is a good idea to speak with a professional that specialises in meeting those needs. If it’s financial then you might want to speak to a financial advisor or your bank, if its legal you might want to speak to your legal advisor. Whoever you choose should be able to assist you with your individual needs but if your unsure don’t be afraid to ask them what their specialism is, if they cant help you then they may be able to point you in the direction of someone who can. Most often at this time of year we get enquiries

from resolutioners who, for one reason or another, have put off writing their will. If this is something you have been putting off, maybe you don’t like talking about death or perhaps you’re struggling to decide what you would like to happen to your assets when you die, then why not cease the moment and make an appointment with your legal advisor to get the ball rolling. Most legal professionals offer a free appointment to discuss your needs before you have to make a commitment to procure their services; so there is nothing stopping you from having a natter! Lakes Legal Limited are specialists in the provision of wills and are happy to answer any queries you may have. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Hannah Bell using the below telephone number or by e-mail: Hannah@lakeslegallimited.co.uk. Lakes Legal Limited offers a comprehensive Fixed-Fee will writing service so you know exactly how much it is going to cost you from the very beginning; No hidden costs and No VAT! Single Wills £75.00 and Couples Wills £125.00 Why not call 01229 47 18 71 now for a one hour fee free consultation. “Lakes Legal Limited; a professional service at an affordable price from the comfort of your own home”

Lakes Lambing

I often joke when I meet people that it’s not safe to shake my hand at this time of year as you don’t know where it might have been! Late January through February and March are my favourite months and the hardest ones. This is the time that for us brings new life to the farm it also brings highs and lows of emotions, occasional frayed tempers and a tired weary look as the sleepless nights and long days take their toll. I come from a family of farmers, so lambing sheep just came as second nature when we took over a farm in Crosscrake, good thing too as my husband works overseas, it’s all hands young and old to the lambing shed at our house, unless you’re pregnant and then you can’t come near as it’s dangerous in case the ewes(sheep) are carrying a virus that causes abortion in humans and sheep. There are many things to consider at lambing time, for instance, most years when winter comes we start to feed the sheep with haylage gathered earlier in the year and sheep nuts to make sure they have healthy strong lambs, this year the grass grew for much longer and was very rich, so the sheep got a bit too fat, which inevitably means big lambs, this is fine once they are out but getting them out is another thing altogether, the sheep struggle to give birth and large vets bills occur if the sheep need to have a caesarean section. If the sheep don’t get enough feed they get something called twin lamb disease when the growing lambs take too much goodness from the sheep and she collapses, if you don’t spot this soon enough the sheep and unborn lambs may die. The upside of lambing time are the success stories the ones that survive against all the odds, the sheep that unusually has 4 lambs and you manage to successfully adopt one or two of them onto another sheep that may have lost her lambs. The pet lambs that very quickly identify you as the milk bar and come running every time they see you. It’s really important if you are visiting or walking in the countryside at this time of year that you try not to disturb the sheep, if stressed or chased the ewes can abort their lambs before they are due and after the lambs are born if a sheep is

26

sarah@thepinfold.com

chased or stressed it can abandon its lambs so please take extra care when out and about especially if you have your dog with you, best to keep it on the lead. As lambing time means weeks with little sleep and long days it’s really important to be prepared, I have homemade hearty soups, stews and casseroles simmering away on the stove, packed with plenty of protein and winter vegetables and always have a chocolate covered protein bar in my jacket pocket just in case, thank goodness my other job is as a wellness coach with Herbalife .
