Welcome to the May issue of The Pinfold, It’s general Elections this month, a very important month and in fact we even vote on my birthday. Good luck to all the parties and our local representatives. This issue we launch our new vouchers promotion. I intend to make this a permanent feature and every month offer our readers many savings from reputable, quality, local businesses in the form of vouchers. I have had such a lot of support and I am very grateful for the fabulous response. There are some great savings to be made this month throughout the Pinfold. We again have some great articles from local organisations and individuals. If you would like to write an article of interest for the Pinfold I would love to hear from you. I would like to Thank Adam Kapustynskyj for our lovely cover photo. Adam Kapustynskyj is a professional photographer covering a wide range of subjects including: Events, Portraits, Weddings, Landscapes and more.To view more of his images please go to : www.AdamKappa.co.uk. How will the Conservative Inheritance Tax Election Pledge Affect me?
The 2015 election is touted as one of the most important for a generation. Like many of my peers I am yet to decide which box I will adorn with my handwriting on May 7th. So with a closely fought Hannah Elizabeth Bell LLB Director Photo: Lorraine Oates Photography campaign now in full swing and all parties making promises about how they will help ‘we the people’, I thought I would use this article to examine one of the Conservative Party’s election pledges: to increase the inheritance tax threshold.
The current rules provide an inheritance tax nil rate band of £325,000.00, frozen since 2009, upon which no inheritance tax is charged. This allows an individual to pass up to £325,000.00 to their chosen beneficiaries tax free upon their death. This figure rises to £650,000.00 for couples as the nil rate band is transferable between those who are married or in a civil partnership. At present, if an estate is valued in excess of the tax-free allowance, tax is charged at 40% on the proportion of the estate that exceeds the nil rate band threshold. So, for example, if a single person died leaving an estate of £400,000.00, tax would be charged at 40% on £75,000.00 of the estate. If a couple who were married or in a civil partnership died leaving a combined estate of £800,000.00, providing the entire estate of the first to die passed to the survivor in the first instance, tax would be charged at 40% on £150,000.00.
The Conservative’s election pledge proposes to raise the amount an individual can leave tax free upon their death to £500,000.00 by introducing a zero-rate band of £175,000.00 on a main property. This zero-rate band would also be transferable between spouses meaning that married couples and those in a civil partnership could leave up to £1m to their chosen beneficiaries tax free.
This new zero-rate band tax relief may however not be available to all. The aim of the Conservative policy is to enable parents and grandparents to pass property on to their children after their death, and so it may be that only parents and grandparents are eligible to claim this tax relief. Similarly it is proposed that the tax-free allowance will gradually
reduce for properties valued in excess of £2m, so those with properties whose value is greater than £2.35m will not benefit.
Some of the other major political parties have also made inheritance tax pledges as part of their manifesto. UKIP have said that they would abolish inheritance tax altogether if they are elected on 7th May; whereas the Green Party have said that the application of inheritance tax will be expanded to include gifts made during an individuals lifetime but with an exemption for wedding presents. As with all manifesto pledges, until the election is over and the ballot is counted the future of inheritance tax remains uncertain. What is concrete however is that whichever party or parties gain power next month I, like many others, will be waiting with baited breath to hear about developments in this area. Lakes Legal Limited specialise in the provision of wills and are happy to answer any queries on your inheritance tax position. NEW AT ABBEY MILL AFTERNOON TEA AVAILABLE IN TAKE AWAY PICNIC BOXES
For the last 7 years our kids picnic boxes have been one of the more popular products on our summer menu, so we thought the summer of 2015 was time to take care of the adults. We all like to recapture the ceremony and tradition of Old England Afternoon tea with the 3 tier cake stands which we have had on our Abbey Mill Menu for several years now, but what about our friends who like to walk, cycle, exercise, take photos and just find the most stunning view to sit and enjoy? At Furness Abbey and around all areas of the Furness peninsula we have the most stunning views from all locations; this is why we decided to package our picnic afternoon tea to take away. Your sandwich, freshly baked scone with jam & clotted cream and slice of cake must be pre booked 1 hour beforehand then when you pick it up you can also choose from our hot drinks or cold non-alcoholic beverages from the fridge to take away with you. All this at a cost of ÂŁ7.50 per person which comes to you in a little carry bag to take away and enjoy wherever you wish. If you are here with us at Abbey Mill why not pre-order your picnic afternoon tea before your walk then, when you return you can soak up the sunshine and enjoy the stunning surroundings of Abbots wood and Furness Abbey. Our Afternoon teas may be pre-ordered by visiting groups. And of course for after your adventures we have ten flavours of English Lakes Ice cream including ice cream shakes, floats & iced coffees. Enjoy the summer Pinfold voucher at Furness Abbey or take our picnic afternoon valid for the month of May tea and enjoy our stunning Furness peninsula.

Seaweed SUPERFOOD FOR THE GARDEN
Seaweed has been used as a soil improver for centuries because it is rich in nitrogen, potassium, phosphate and magnesium. But that isn’t all, there are other reasons it is great for your garden too.
Reason 1 – It’s Free! However remember to follow the country code and forage responsibly.
Reason 2 – It’s a great mulch and will help to retain the moisture in the soil, it can be used around the base of plants, trees and shrubs to help protect them during dry hot weather. Reason 3 – It reduces the need to weed, a good mulch of seaweed on your beds will hinder garden weeds from popping up around your plants.
Reason 4 – It is superfood for your soil and compost, with about 60 trace elements that help the soil to correct imbalances and it has disease preventing qualities and nitrogen fixing bacteria. It has earned a reputation of being a broad spectrum fertiliser. Reason 5 – It repels the pests including slugs. Slugs don’t like salt or sharp edges. Birds don’t like it much either.
Reason 6 – No risk of introducing disease, Seaweed does not share any known disease with land plants. Reason 7 – It’s a ready to use compost accelerant Reason 8 – It improves the texture of the soil

NEW LIFE AND NEW BUSINESS FOR MICHELLE AS SHE SETS UP THE HR DEPT FOR THE LAKES An HR expert is bringing big business knowledge to the small business community in the Lake District, after setting up The HR Dept in the region. Michelle Bell moved to the area with her husband Phil, a chef who works in a hotel in Windermere, in July last year, and has now launched her new company, providing a range of HR services for SMEs. Michelle’s area of business includes the full length and breadth of the Lake District, from Kendal to Maryport, Penrith,
Windermere, Barrow-in-Furness and Ulverston. Both the services she provides and the business itself are backed up by the head offices of The HR Dept, which has a network of licensees providing practical HR support for SMEs in 66 territories around the UK. Having previously worked in HR in large food manufacturing companies, for the past three years Michelle had worked with a large HR advisory firm but had always dreamed of setting up on her own. When the opportunity to take redundancy came along last year she took it, put her house in Wigan up for sale and started the process of moving to The Lakes and setting up her own business from home in Ulverston. She said: “It’s been three years since I left my previous job and I’ve had a number of interim jobs since then, while we’ve been waiting to move. So there were times when I wondered if it was ever going to happen but I had lots of encouragement from The HR Dept while I was waiting to get set up. Now that I’m here it feels great. “Phil’s run his own businesses before and he’s offering me advice when I need it. It’s hard work but it’s great. Finding The HR Dept has enabled me to set up my own company – I’d never have done it myself. “Now it’s a matter of getting out and about and known by local businesses. There are plenty of pockets of business around, and the ideal types of business for the services The HR Dept provides, so I’m looking forward to sharing the benefits of what I can offer. “I’ve worked with many SMEs in the North West with pragmatic HR advice in all aspects of HR, such as restructuring, developing policies and procedures, management development programmes and employee relations issues. “What I really enjoy is being able to help businesses in the local community by understanding

their business needs and requirements. “Not all organisations are the same, there isn’t a one size fits all when it comes down to people, each individual business needs the support of being legally compliant with a happy workforce.” Sue Tumelty, Founder and Executive Director of The HR Dept, said: “It’s great to have someone of Michelle’s calibre offering our services in The Lakes and I’m sure she will run her business there with great success. If you would like to contact Michelle regarding any HR issues from creating employment contracts to delicate employee issues, or even helping with following redundancy procedures, Michelle’s contact information is michelle.bell@HRdept.co.uk. “Trust isn’t given – it’s earned.”
With so many heating and plumbing companies out there, how do you know which one to choose? Well firstly make sure they are Gas Safe registered and secondly find out what their customers are saying about them. Gas Water Heating were the first Trading Standards Approved Plumbers and Heating Engineers in Cumbria, and are proud of the 5 star service recognised by hundreds of their local customers. “Being part of the Cumbria County Council’s Buy with Confidence scheme is really important to us” says Graham, Director and Senior Engineer. “It means our customers can provide confidential and honest feedback via the Trading Standards website”. ”It’s easy for people to say how happy they are with their installation when you are stood in front of them, but when they can say what they like when you’ve gone and they still provide you with excellent feedback, we know we are giving them the service they want.” “Over 70% of our business comes from word of mouth and referrals” says Graham. “And we often fit lots of boilers in the same street once people have seen our van and asked the neighbours if they were happy with the installation.’’
Social Media has played a big part in brand awareness; receiving enquiries via Facebook and Twitter and of course you can’t miss their bright green vans.

‘Crossover’ music styles widens appeal for Ulverston International Festival 2015
Ulverston International Music Festival 2015 got off to a scintillating start as tickets went on sale for the hugely varied programme of events between June 12th and 20th. Pictured during the launch event at Forum 28 in Barrow are Festival Founder and Artistic Director Anthony Hewitt (right) and harpist Mary Dunsford (centre left) who entertained the guests along with players from Furness Music Centre. With them are John Woodcock, taking a break from campaigning to retain his seat in the forthcoming election, and Jane Lawrence, secretary of Ulverston Photographic Society which mounted an exhibition of pictures from the 2014 Festival.
Ulverston International Music Festival is expanding its appeal for 2015 with an even wider programme of music to delight audiences from classical, choral and comedy to jazz, folk and family fun from June 12th to June 20th. Festival Founder and Artistic Director Anthony Hewitt says the event – now in its 13th year – is designed to bring in a wider audience through the ‘crossover’ appeal. He explains: “There’s a perception among some people that classical music is rather stuffy and dull but in the modern classical arena that could not be further from the truth. It is more accessible than ever before and embraces frequent collaborations with different musical styles including jazz and folk. Our programme seeks to reflect that trend while also offering delights for classical purists who are more than happy to share their enthusiasm with newcomers to the genre.” The Festival is organising special outreach sessions with local schools, and for most of the events tickets for students and Under 18s are available for as little as £2 each from the Coronation Hall Box Office. The Festival begins with leading international violinist Tasmin Little who has performed around the globe

at concert venues and with some of the world’s top orchestras. She will be accompanied by Cumbria’s own Martin Roscoe on piano in the concert on Friday (June 12th) at the Coronation Hall in Ulverston to launch a blockbuster opening weekend. An Ambassador for The Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts and for Youth Music,Tasmin Little’s recording of the Elgar Violin Concerto with Sir Andrew Davis and the Royal National Scottish Orchestra won the Critic's Choice Award in the 2011 Classic BRIT Awards and her Britten Concerto with Edward Gardner and the BBC Philharmonic, released in May 2013, also received lavish critical praise. On Saturday night (June 13th) the Coronation Hall is the venue for jazz with the hugely popular David Rees-Williams Trio, featuring David on piano; Neil Francis on bass guitar and Phil Laslett on drums. The Coronation Hall also hosts two of the highlights for classical music lovers; on Tuesday evening there is a romantic theme to chamber music with ‘French Connection’, and Festival organiser Anthony Hewitt takes centre stage on Friday evening (June 19th) as soloist for ‘Symphonic Splendours’ with the acclaimed Royal Northern Sinfonia Orchestra, performing Brahms’ mighty Piano Concerto No1 and Beethoven’s 4th Symphony.
Other standout dates during the Festival include Ulverston’s very own sax star Jess Gillam in concert with Anthony Hewitt on piano at the Coronation Hall on Wednesday starting at 7.30pm, and a tour de force in classic comedy with Rainer Hersch recalling the brilliant Victor Borge’s piano antics, again at the Coronation Hall, starting at 7.30pm on Thursday June 18th . Folk connections feature in two of the concert dates with breakout modern folk group ‘Project Jam Sandwich’ providing a series of sweet sound bites on Sunday at 7.30pm in the Coronation Hall, and 'Cuillin Sound' exploring the haunting melodies of the Western Isles on Tuesday lunchtime at Ulverston Parish Church. There are also two events aimed specifically at families: on Monday evening (June 15th) at the Coronation Hall ‘Change the Music!’ takes the audience on a hugely entertaining tour of music from medieval to modern (via hit themes from ‘Frozen’), while Oliver Cox and Owen Gunnell are beating the drum for the excitement of percussion with their show ‘O Duo’ on Saturday in Ulverston Parish Church starting at 2.00pm The Festival closes in epic style on Saturday evening at Ulverston Parish Church with a performance of Will Todd's ‘Mass in Blue’ performed by Ulverston Festival Chorus with Will himself on piano and John Gibbons conducting. Tickets are now on sale from the Coronation Hall Box Office with individual events priced from as little as £8.00 and a tremendous value Festival ticket for best seats at all of the evening events costing £80.00, or tickets for all 15 events priced from £110.00 For more information go to www.ulverstonmusicfestival.co.uk

Crystal encrusted frocks, big hair, smart suits and chauffeur arrival. Gone are the days of the end of term school disco; a school prom is the chance for a girl to swap her school uniform for her dream dress and celebrate the end of high school in a tiara.
But what about the rest of us? Once upon a time, a ball gown was a standard in a girl’s closet. To Christian Dior there was no excuse to be gown-less “A ball gown is your dream” he said “… I think it is just as necessary in a woman’s wardrobe as a suit” he added “… and it is wonderful for morale” he reasoned “… with a suit and a ball gown you can make a tour of the world and be well dressed for almost any occasion”.
This was before the age of budget travel, I might add. Can you imagine fitting a ball gown into your carry on? Or even better wearing it on the plane to travel? Well at least you would have a half decent chance of upgrading to first class! Despite the opportunity, in these modern times, ball gowns have generally fallen out of favour and are reserved for prom-goers, royals and those that walk the red carpet. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean you don’t wish you could wear one! After all in the humdrum of daily life wouldn’t it be great to have a moment of drama and fantasy and turn heads in a ravishing dress!
22
sarah@thepinfold.com
Surprisingly, even though they rarely make the grade for most social occasions in the 21st century, it’s never been easier to get your hands on a ball gown. In days gone by a gown cost as much as a car and took months to make, but today you can pick up a gown in TK Maxx, score one on E-bay or even get lucky at a Vintage Fair. You can even make a ball gown yourself from … well anything. Never mind whether your ball gown is made from newspaper or taffeta, if you’ve made an effort to wear a ball gown on your average Tuesday in 2015 people will only be impressed.
This year, for the third year running, you have the chance to channel your inner Cinderella. For one day only, step out in style on May the 30th and join other ball gown wearers at Two by Two in Ulverston as we champion National Wear a Ball Gown Day. Walk our red carpet, sip on a cocktail and feel just like a princess.
And … Prom Girls … don’t miss the opportunity to catch your bargain dream dress at the Daisy Daisy Bridal Sample Sale on May 29th and 30th on Union Street in Ulverston.

Children’s Charity needs more carers Our foster carers are very special people who do a tremendous job, caring for children who have come through some hard times. Often the children come to us very angry or very sad and have never experienced a settled family life. It is really surprising what a good bedtime routine, clean clothes and a hot meal can do.
We give our carers training and support to help them deal with the feelings and behaviours that the children come with. Fostering is a job that involves the whole family, so we also support our carers’ birth children who have to learn to share their parents and their home.
We meet with our carers each month to discuss the progress the children are making. We also have a monthly support group which gives all our carers an opportunity to talk about their success and challenges and offer support and advice to one another.
26
sarah@thepinfold.com
It’s wonderful to see the children grow and develop and to help them to make sense of some of the difficulties they have been through. We often see them make huge progress at school as they learn to relax, play and concentrate.
Foster families come in all shapes and sizes. Carers can be married, single, divorced or living in a partnership. The important qualities we are looking for are energy and patience, the ability to listen and be flexible when things don’t work out as planned!
We are different from other independent agencies because we are non profit making; that means that any surplus is put back into supporting the carers and children. We provide training, 24 hours support, a generous financial allowance and regular days out for families. Our carers say that the agency feels like being part of a large family. If you are interested, please don’t hesitate to give us a call or send us an e mail and we can have an informal chat about what the role entails and what we can offer you.
