Distributing 7000 copies a month Welcome to the very Autumnal November issue of The Pinfold. The trees are looking magnificent with their glowing warm colours. The nights are drawing in and the fires are being turned on, as we enter into winter. This year though, there is no cosying up and hibernating inside we have a record number of events on our ‘What’s on?’ page which is great. Time to start to get those party dresses out. Fairs galore and the turning on the Christmas light events look fabulous this year. Even Author events at the library, there really is something for everyone. The Dickensian festival at the end of the month and by then we all will have succumbed to the Christmas fever.
This months issue is a little smaller than normal as I am going away for a break to sunny Cyprus. I will be back in time to help deliver the magazines at the beginning of November and batteries fully recharged, will be hitting the floor running for a great bumper December issue.
As always I would like to thank Lorraine Oates Photography for the editor’s photograph.

BBC Young Musician of the Year 2014 Soloists Friday 5th December 2014
I was a Woodwind Finalist in BBC Young Musician of the Year 2014 and the recipient of the BBC Walter Todds Bursary for showing exceptional promise in the competition and I have organised a concert in the Coronation Hall, Ulverston, of Finalists and Category Finalists from BBC Young Musician of the Year 2014, as seen on BBC Two and BBC Four earlier this year.
The competition is one of the most prestigious classical music competitions in the world and has given careers to world renowned artists such as Nicola Benedetti, Alison Balsom, Emma Johnson and Freddy Kempf. Performances will include Finalist Elliott Gaston-Ross (percussion), Category Finalist Hayley Parkes (piano) and myself, Jess Gillam (saxophone) as well as students from the Junior Royal Northern College of Music including up and coming 11 year old clarinetist Patsy Gillam who is a member of the National Children's Orchestra.
This will be a truly special evening with a mixed and diverse repertoire of music and is a rare opportunity to see such talented young musicians in Cumbria.

St Mary’s Hospice opens first charity Tea Room in Dalton
St Mary’s Hospice in Ulverston has opened its first charity tea room out in the heart of the community in Dalton in Furness.
The Forget-me-not tea room is open in Crown Court House in the town’s Market Street. The building is also now home to the St Mary’s Hospice Curiosity Gift Shop, which has moved out of its existing smaller premises in the town to complement the new tearoom.
The bright and airy Forget-me-not tea room will be open daily during the week selling quality teas and coffees, as well as a range of cakes, scones and light bites.
The tea room will be mostly be staffed by local volunteers who have given up their time to support the Hospice.
St Mary’s Hospice Head of Income Generation, Zoe

Guest, said: “We’ve taken the idea of the Orangery Café at the Hospice and developed this tea room, which we felt was needed in Dalton in Furness. The Orangery has become a daily necessity for the local community, visitors, staff and patients of the hospice so we hope our first every charity tearoom in the heart of the Dalton community will be just as well supported.
“As with most of our work, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do without the support of our enthusiastic volunteers. We were really pleased with the response to our call out for tea room volunteers with 18 people showing an interest in being involved in our exciting new project. But we always need more!
“Its obviously very early days for the Forget-me-not tea room but it would be wonderful if we could develop the concept and even take it out into the South Lakes area in the future. Watch this space!” Crown Court House was once the town’s police station and anyone paying a visit to the toilet facilities in the new Forget-me-not tea room will be entering the old police cells.
The Forget-me-not tea room and gift shop will initially be open from 9am-3.30pm Monday to Friday and will be officially opened by the Mayor of Dalton next month. 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of St Mary’s Hospice. For more information visit http://www.25yearsofcare.co.uk.

The ever successful Furness Firecracker Roller Derby team has hit on hard times as they recently lost their venue.
Thankfully they have found The Canteen. “We are going to be able to take over the lease of The Canteen's main hall as our training venue. The building needs a fair bit of work before we'll be able to get it up and running and the skaters are all hands on deck to get things sorted out. Steve Horrocks from Horrocks and Cross has also been great in getting works underway so we can get in there asap.” It still leaves us looking for a venue where we can hold games. A full track needs to be 108'x75' plus room for seating for audience. If anyone knows of a venue that could help out the Furness Firecrackers hold Games Please contact us. We have just played the last game for the year “It’s been an absolute pleasure being captain for the Crackers 2014, Weeble has been an amazing vice captain and helped me lead the girls to a triumphant year!
Every girl on the team has trained very hard to get us where we are and I’m more than proud to be on their team! I get extremely excited when I think about 2015 and can’t wait for another fun filled ass kicking year with the girls :)

The last time we’d played the Tender Hooligans had been nearly two years ago and the score line then had been 89-237 to the Hooligans. We were determined to go back and show them just how far we’d come in these two years. Also it was our final game of what had been a fantastic year for the Crackers and we really wanted to go out with a bang!
Now taking Christmas Appointments,
call in to view the full range of Elemis Christmas gift sets
We had some availability problems leading up to the game and went in with only 11 players, instead of a full squad of 14. However what we lacked in numbers we more than made up for in sheer determination and drive. From the very first jam we dominated the game, quickly building up a large lead. We were so proud of the derby we played…all the practice and drilling paid off. The lineups worked beautifully together and each team member knew exactly their role and how to achieve it.
At half-time we were sitting on a 60 point lead, pleasing but not unassailable. During the second half, we continued to extend our lead despite the strong opposition provided by the Tender Hooligans. It was brilliant to hear our supporters going crazy in the stands and that drove us on further. Some excellent jamming from Decoy and Weeble in the closing minutes of the game really piled on the points and we finished with a final score of 313-74!

A sunny day in Greenock and a warm and sunny welcome on board the Royal Princess. Christened by Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Cambridge, the Royal Princess stands at 217 feet high and 1,083 feet long, and the first thing that struck me as we waited to embark was that all the outside staterooms (cabins) had balconies, adding a great feeling of light and space. There are 1,780 cabins on board and in total the ship can carry 3,560 guests. On the day we visited the ship was at full capacity yet at no point did I see a queue or an area overrun with people. There are so many public areas, plus with the majority of guests visiting the exciting ports of call, as well as having the privacy of retreating to their own private balconies, the ship doesn’t feel overcrowded. There are three main dining rooms which
@ThePinfoldLocal on twitter
make up a wide range of dining options from snack bars, gelateria and a seafood bar to name a few. We were lucky enough to sample a 3 course meal during our visit, which was just fabulous – 5* dining and 5* service! To help burn off those calories after sampling the delicious cuisine, there is a running track, multi sports court, laser shooting range, putting green and a huge fitness centre and aerobics studio. And when it comes to relaxation, the spa was the ultimate place for a sumptuous treat. You can retreat to the Sanctuary, where the only thing on the menu is relaxation, giving you the opportunity to hire a VIP private cabana for the day in this adult exclusive area. There is also plenty to keep the children entertained, with lots of fun kids clubs were children aged 3 – 17yrs are welcome. I only saw the ship on a whistle-stop tour, yet I managed to get a great understanding of the ship and all the fantastic amenities it offers. I would be more than happy to share my experience of all the different parts of the ship I visited. I hope one day to return as a passenger and enjoy the luxury at sea. If only I had been able to stowaway… I’d be sailing the Caribbean in style right now!

I am going to review a series of books that I have been reading since a friend recommended them to me last year. I haven’t finished the series yet though, I am on book 5 at the moment.Yes it is taking me quite a while but they are long books and I read them in between the other books I review. The first in the series, “Outlander “ (originally published in UK as “Cross Stitch” ) starts us off in Scotland in the 1940’s. We are introduced to Claire Randall, a former English combat nurse who is back from the Second World War, reunited with her husband Frank and on a second honeymoon in Scotland. She accidently walks through a standing stone in an ancient stone circle and is suddenly taken back in time to Jacobite Scotland, leaving Frank behind. She is now in the year 1743, an “Outlander” in a Scotland torn by war and raiding highland clans. She then meets and falls in love with Jamie Fraser, a brave red headed Scots warrior. The series centres on the romance and adventures of Claire and Jamie in eighteenth and twentieth century Scotland, France,The West Indies, America and England. These are long books and at times perhaps a

little too long. They are, in my opinion, written in such an interesting way that you just keep going. As the story involves time travel there has to be an element of scepticism while reading it. However the author has immense knowledge about the subject matters she introduces us to, for example the use of herbs in medicine and the superstitions folk had in those times, and although there are some minor tweaks to some of the historical facts it all becomes very believable and enjoyable. The reader meets many famous and infamous historical characters and follows Claire and Jamie through many adventures – nice and nasty. I would recommend reading the series in the intended order as the stories do interweave with each other. There are eight books in the series – the eighth one became available from Amazon in March 2014 – I am hoping she will write some more ! This series of books is engrossing, exciting and long. I love them, and am beginning to feel that the characters portrayed are all part of some extended family of mine – well I have known them all for more than a year!! If you like historical fiction, lots of adventure and a good romance you will like them too. Be warned though that there is some adult content and harrowing violence, albeit relevant to the plot. One of the reasons I wanted to review this series is because I saw on the internet recently that Ronald D Moore (Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica) has produced a TV adaptation of the story and the production location was
Cumbernauld, Newtonmore and Aberdour in Scotland. Some scenes were also shot in Cumbria. Sam Heughan, a Scottish actor, plays Jamie, Tobias Menzies, an English actor, is Frank/Jack Randall and Irish actress Caitriona Balfe portrays Claire. The series is produced by an American Cable TV channel called Starz and reportedly employed a local crew of about 200 as well as an estimated 2400 supporting roles, cast locally. The series is presently being shown in America and Canada and has received some very encouraging reviews. Well I really hope that it is going to be shown to us in the UK too. Diana Jean Gabaldon Watkins grew up in Flagstaff Arizona and is of Mexican-American and English descent. She has earned three degrees, a B.S in Zoology, an M.S. in Marine Biology, and a PhD in ecology. The Outlander series started by accident, when Diana decided to write a novel for practice, in order to decide whether she wanted to do that for real – and she did, and I am glad about that. Enjoy .........

Lakes Legal Limited Dealing with Death
Hannah Elizabeth Bell LLB Director Photo: Lorraine Oates Photography
Following on from last month’s edition of the Pinfold (available at
http://www.thepinfold.com) Once the funeral has taken place attention usually turns to sorting out the paperwork and dealing with the administration of the deceased’s estate. The first consideration when dealing with the administration of a deceased person’s estate is whether or not they left a will. If the deceased did leave a will, this will guide those left behind how to distribute the deceased’s estate. If the deceased did not leave a will or of the will they left was invalid, for whatever reason, the deceased will be said to have died ‘Intestate’. When someone dies intestate, or without a will, special rules, known as the intestacy rules, come into play. Once it has been determined whether or not the deceased left a will the next consideration will be whether or not Probate is required. Probate is the process whereby the person dealing with the administration of the estate is given legal authority to distribute the
26
assets. When the deceased did not leave a will this process is called applying for ‘Letters of Administration’ and the applicant is known as the deceased’s ‘Administrator’. If the deceased did not leave a valid will, the deceased’s next-of-kin can apply to be an administrator in the following order of priority: 1. The married partner or civil partner of the person who has died 2. The child of the person who has died 3. The grandchild of the person who has died 4. The parent of the person who has died 5. The brother or sister of the person who has died 6. The nephew or niece of the person who has died 7. Another relative of the person who has died. Once Letters of Administration have been granted the Administrator can collect in and distribute the estate assets. When someone doesn’t leave a will the way in which the estate is distributed is governed by the intestacy rules, which were updated on 1st October 2014.
www.facebook.com/thepinfold
Under the current Intestacy Rules the deceased’s estate would be distributed as follows: 1. If the deceased was survived by their husband/wife/civil partner but had no children the partner will receive all the personal property and belongings of the person who has died and the whole of the estate with interest from the date of death. 2. If the deceased was survived by their children and their husband/wife/civil partner the partner will receive all the personal property and belongings of the person who has died, the first £250,000.00 of the deceased’s estate and half of anything else. The children will receive one half of the value of the estate above £250,000.00. If there are two or more children the children will inherit in equal shares. 3. If the deceased was survived by their children but there is no surviving husband/wife/civil partner the children will inherit the entirety of the deceased’s estate. 4. If the deceased was not survived by their husband/wife/civil partner or children, their grandchildren, great-grandchildren, parents, brothers & sisters and nieces & nephews may inherit under the rules of intestacy but this will depend on a number of circumstances.
Most importantly, if the deceased did not leave a will, unmarried partners and/or lesbian or gay partners not in a civil partnership have no right to inherit.
