ecently I was presented with an Eva (Enterprise vision award) award and won the Fitness and Wellbeing category. This was a huge honour and I am very grateful to those of you who have helped me create a business that has been my personal vision for many years. I have been a wellness coach with Herbalife for over 10 years and in that time have created a number of events and classes, some copied or borrowed and some unique to myself that have become part of the package that I offer. The last 12 months have been amazing, inspired by one of my clients Lynne, featured here, I have shared my passion for nutrition and wellbeing but I have also embarked on an amazing fitness journey. At 50 years of age I have never been fitter or healthier. I am currently taking a fitness instructor course, have qualified as a Fit Steps instructor (a fun class which incorporates the strictly style dancing with fitness)and also run community Fit Clubs which take people of any age and ability out of their comfort zone to have some fun getting fit. As part of the award I had to do a presentation to a judging panel, if you would like to see it arribaweightlosschallenge.blogspot.com So what can you expect if you spend an hour with me, well firstly a body analysis where you stand on a special set of scales that measure your hydration, fat levels, both total and visceral fat, basal metabolic rate, metabolic age, lean mass and bone density. I will then look at your typical daily diet and highlight your strengths and weaknesses offering a solution to improve on these. You can also attend a better body and weight loss class, Fit Club or Fit steps class to help you along your journey to a healthier more active lifestyle and get the body you have often longed for. I am a coach for every body so why not give me a call. 07914379606 or 01539560313

How often should one clean your carpets?

Carpets usually are the single biggest investment in most rooms. If you never serviced your car eventually your car would fail. Similarly most manufacturers of carpets recommend that you clean your carpets at least once a year. Ongoing maintenance would involve vacuuming your carpets at least once per week. The answer to how often to clean your carpet is dependant upon use. If you have pets, children, smokers in the room, it is recommended that you clean them MORE THAN once a year. Dirt is not the only thing lurking in your carpets. Dead skin cells, mites, dust, possibly urine, vomit, blood, coffee tea, wine or beer to name a few. If left unattended, the dirt squashes down and forms a build up of layers that require more moisture and liquid cleaning solutions plus the correct agitation method. Specialist carpet cleaners don’t tackle these jobs with one solution. Specialist cleaning solutions are used for example for treating tea and coffee stains another contains urine neutralisers.Wine especially requires various treatments to ensure removal. It’s the years of experience and knowledge in dealing with these stains that Eco Extreme Clean brings. DEEP THOROUGH CLEANING

My Name is Ellie Edwards I left school at the age of 16 knowing I wanted to pursue a career as a Beauty Therapist. I attended Kendal College attaining my level 2 in Beauty Therapy in June 2013 and was delighted to be given the opportunity to fulfil my dreams this year by Helena Fayyazi who owns Studio One and Theatre Royal Beauty Rooms in Ulverston. Helena who has been in the industry for 22 years was so impressed with my eagerness to learn, professionalism and confidence, especially for a 17 year old. She offered me the chance to rent her newly refurbished beauty room which is part of a trio including hair and nails the summer of this year, Helena knew with her help and guidance as well as that of the other experienced salon staff I could build up by own client base and further knowledge and education in the beauty industry. I am continuing my studies at Kendal College currently studying level 3 Massage and Facial Electrics and I am keen to obtain other advanced courses and will be enrolling in Sports Massage early next year. I work Thursday, Friday and Saturday each week and I am mindful of the fact that women find it

Cumbria business woman Lorraine Oates has secured award success at the 2013 Enterprise Vision Awards (EVA’s) which celebrate the achievements of women in business across the North West and this year attracted headline sponsor, NatWest. The Dalton in Furness business woman beat off stiff competition to be crowned winner in the Best Beauty Business category in the North West (sponsored by Mary Kay Cosmetics) Lorraine of Lorraine Oates Photography won the title for her make-over photo shoots and boudoir photography. With her glamorous and sophisticated studio based in Dalton in Furness, Lorraine’s business specialises in boudoir photography and make-over photo shoots, with a strong emphasis on helping ladies of all ages to look good and feel great. Lorraine began her career as a make-up artist. Whilst teaching performing arts students techniques in the application of theatre and media makeup. Boogles and Bump Slugs and Snails Boys Tights back at 5Brogden St, Ulverston

Slugs and Snails tights for boys arrived at Boogles and Bump to great acclaim. These bright tights look great on boys and girls alike, but if you have never considered tights for boys, just read the mummy review below. This is a review by Laura Ratcliffe, who reviewed the tights for her son, Finley. After having my little girl 3 years ago I realised how practical tights are for a baby, she hardly ever wore socks as tights were such an easier option, No lost socks, cold legs or worrying about buying lined trousers. So when we had our little boy 18 months ago I was a bit stumped as to how we could tackle these problems. We muddled along with odd socks/no socks (and his sisters pink tights which did get a few comments) until he was a year old. We then discovered the slugs and snails tight for boys. They are fantastic! As second time parents we decided to venture out in to the world of reusable nappies, one of the cons of the reusable for me was the uncomfortable looking fit of trousers over the nappy and the lack of movement my baby had when crawling. The tights stretch and give where needed and yet still hold the nappy in place instead of pinching and squashing like the trousers. The tights come in a range of modern bright designs suitable for boys and girls. We got age 12-18 months and they have fit him from 12 months and are still going strong 6 months on. They seem to grow with my little boy yet keep their shape as the elastic is of a very good quality. The grips on the soles of the tights are simply genius! They are perfect for when baby is just finding their feet and gives them that extra bit of control. We have had them for six months in and they are still in very good condition, bearing in mind that my little boy is a bit of a chunky monkey and has really put them to the test. They have washed really well and the colours have not faded. Slugs and Snails retail for ÂŁ10.99 and are available now.

YOU SHOULD LEAVE YOUR HAT ON “Now we come to the most pressing problem of this time. Shall you or shall you not wear a hat?” Hat wearing is possibly not at the top of your list of wardrobe dilemmas in 2013 but when Christian Dior asked this question back in the 1950’s it was the number one closet conundrum. The garment that had, until then, held such great importance both as a fashion statement and as an indicator of social standing was about to fall out of fashion. Hats had been worn since time immemorial but it was only during The Middle Ages that women became expected to do so once the Church decreed that they ought to cover their heads. What was at first a necessity soon became an accessory and at the very forefront of female fashion. The term Milliner, a maker of women’s hats, was coined during the 16th Century and by the Edwardian era only beggars went bear headed. Despite the fact that during the War Years hat materials were one of the few things that were not rationed, it was during this time that the wearing of hats began to wane. Men and women alike had become uniform wearers and this not only triggered a desire for less formal fashions but also hat wearing provided an unpleasant reminder of their military uniforms. People also found they walked around less and drove around in cars more so they really didn’t need to wear a hat plus the roof of the car was often too low for many hat styles. By the time the 60’s arrived the hat was pretty much redundant. “Without hats we would have no civilisation” Christian Dior Like Dior I mourn the age of the hat. In a hat you will always have an advantage. A hat can protect you from the elements and keep you both warm in winter and cool in summer. A hat

20

www.thepinfold.com

can allow you to stand out in a crowd and equally can provide a disguise that you can hide behind. A hat can lift your mood and change your appearance in an instant. A hat can hide bad hair. Today we can embrace the luxury of hat wearing without the etiquette that once went with it. Once upon a time everyone knew the complex rules regarding headwear and they knew the way it was donned, tipped need to be subject to the time of day, whether you were indoors or out and whoever might be accompanying you. These days we need not worry what class we are, what day of the week it is or even the phase of the moon when considering our hat choices, they aren’t even in fashion so when it comes to your hat you really can do as you please. At Two by Two Ulverston we generally encourage hat wearing and have a head turning collection. Ski Holidays

Hi everyone, Snow is falling….well, it is in parts of Europe ski areas and let’s hope that means there is a good skiing season ahead. There are a great range of flight options available from Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds Bradford to the airports serving some of the most popular ski resorts in Europe. And whatever your requirements, self-catering or catered, ski to the door, close to the resort centre, apartments for single adults or small groups, there are a range of options to be considered. This year for my customers, Tignes remains a firm favourite – you can ski the Espace Killy ski area, which combines Tignes and Val d’Isere, with over 300kms of pistes. For those of you who love the thrill of the slopes, now is the time to make sure you secure your seats on the flights. For families, I put some prices together this week and there are still some fabulous child prices to be had and offers on ski hire too. Short on time? As we are now closer to the season, a lot of accommodation has now opened up its rooms to short break stays, so if you are limited on time and still want to have a few nights away – remember I can put this together with your low cost flights and still ensure you have 100% financial protection for your holiday. Keep warm everyone and remember, if you would like to talk to me about the next holiday you are planning, then please don’t hesitate to give me a call. Best wishes,

Have you ever walked up to a quince and given it a good sniff?

30

Invited it home to your kitchen and allowed it to sit there and quite steal the show for weeks? If you haven’t, then you need to start flirting with a quince as soon as you possibly can. Fresh quinces and their scent always remind me of Portugal and walking home from school on a rainy Autumn afternoon. My friends and I used to walk past a fruit orchard on our way home from school and it was always a challenge trying to reach for quinces or pomegranates as fast as we could before the owner saw us The quince tree ( Cydonia oblonga ), is a small tree, whose fruits are called quinces . It originates from the milder regions of Asia and South Eastern Europe. It is a wonderfully old-fashioned fruit, like an oversized knobbly yellow apple, with a spicy fragrance and a slightly grainy texture. It is rock-hard, even when ripe, and must be cooked to be edible. It has an abundance of pectin, which allows the fruit when cooked with sugar to set up as a solid jelly or paste. Here’s the attraction: Lovely, lush, dark green foliage on a tree that gently weeps downwards and beautiful flowers in the spring, and, best of all, curious lemon-coloured, pear shaped and out-of-this-world-scented fruits in late summer and autumn. Here at Ford Park we do have a young quince tree that hasn’t started to produce fruit yet but I can’t wait to walk into the kitchen garden perhaps on the next Autumn and pick a fresh quince straight from the tree. Quinces have always been attributed mythological significance, It was the Greeks who first began to use the flower of the quince as a sacred symbol of the goddess of love, Aphrodite.

It was tradition to offer a quince to the bride during the marriage proposal, instead of a diamond ring as today ... Much cheaper! In Portugal most of the quince production its used in ‘Marmelada’ or quince jelly the most famous being the Marmelada de Odivelas near Lisbon where its was first made by the nuns in the Odivelas Monastery

Marmelada (Quince Jelly)

This is a traditional Portuguese dessert or spread. It is delicious on its own with a slice of crusty bread or with a slice of matured cheese and it keeps very well for up to 6 months! 900 grams of quince peeled, deseeded and cut into chunks 900 grams of granulated sugar 1 medium cup of water Put quince fruit and sugar onto a large pan over medium-low heat. Stir to coat the quince with the sugar. Do not walk away from the stove as soon as it starts boiling, this should take under 10 minutes to happen! At this point stir occasionally. The quince fruit will get pink and beautiful and at this point it is ready. Take the pan off the heat and puree the quince with an electric blender. Pour the puree in bowls. After it is completely cooled cover each bowl with parchment paper and store the bowls in a dry place.
