An Autumn Glow

The flame is being kindled once more for another Candlelit Walk along The Gill in Ulverston this Halloween on Thursday, October 31 at 6.30pm. Volunteers aren't letting last year's rain snuff-out the fun, says lead volunteer Jennie Dennett....

Flashback to 2012. The forecast was appalling but optimism was high: "The rain'll pass," we said. Afterall the candle pots were ready - clay had been pounded, rolled and sculpted by shoppers who'd paused to pot at Ulverston's Market Hall. The candles were ready volunteers had tipped molten wax donated by Wax Lyrical into 438 jars. And the musicians' after-show curry was ready. So we wrung our soft, wax-moisturised hands and finally voted. "Aye!

Except, for once, those weather people were spot on. Candles were coaxed into life only to be snuffed out by another surge of torrential, wick-wetting, flare-snuffing rain. Still the musicians played on, showing Titanic spirit while a few flares blazed defiantly along the waters edge.

People came, together we laughed at our folly, shaking the drips from our noses in a circle of light on a wild, Cumbrian Halloween night.

Now what to do for this, the event's fifth year? After a pub-meeting it was decreed, the madness SHALL go on. Halloween night will ALWAYS be Ulverston's Candlelit Walk. On a fine night they'll be hundreds, on a wet one, fewer, but candles will light up this night.

So gather all because pottery candle holders cut with ghouls, cities & stars will again sit a-top the railings casting their eerie shadows.Again, stout flares of wax will light-up the dancing waters of The Gill. Again there'll be music and a storyteller spinning a spooky yarn. And this year artists skilled with angle grinders have made fire bowls, tin spike lights and oil-drum braziers cut with fairies & deer. It's a magical spectacle that'll happen again because nothing warms the soul like the sight of firelight on a dark, chill night.

If you want to get involved, pop along to the Ulverston Scrap Store (upstairs at the Old Library opposite Barclays) on September 28th at 10.30am to make a shadowscreen for the event. And join us on Facebook by searching Ulverston's Candlelit Walk. The event is entirely run by volunteers using donations from the night.

How we first began.

The Heath’s name has been part of Barrow life for more than 50 years. Just after the Second World War, Joe Heath set up a stall in the local Market Hall, selling second hand books, second hand comics and pocket money toys. Heath’s has now expanded into two shops, 76 Dalton Rd and 3 Harrison St, and is owned by Joe’s son Phil.

The products we sell.

We sell a vast range of products. If you’re looking for a luxury pen, we have stock from Parker, Waterman, Sheaffer and Cross. Arts and Crafts? We’ve got branded items from Windsor and Newton, Derwent, Ranger and Provocraft. Stuck for stationery? We have Q Connect, Staedler, Swordfish, Silvine, Collins and Black n Red. Toys are available from brands including, Fisher Price, Playmobil, Lego, VTech, Thomas, Sylvanian Families and Games Workshop to name but a few.

Our Team.

At Heath’s, our aim is to make you, the customer, our Number 1 priority. We are a relatively small but highly committed, team of 13. We offer helpful, friendly service, with a smile. Downstairs in our Dalton Rd store, selling all manner of Stationery, Maps, Books and Luxury Pens you’ll find Natalie, Angela and Helen. Always ready to help if you need it!

Up the stairs you’ll find Jayne who works hard to keep the Toy level looking tip top, with a huge range of Toys and Model kits, and Andrew, our Games Workshop specialist! Running our Harrison St store, you’ll find Cath and Faye. This is where our huge range of pre-school toys can be located. They’re always on hand to help, if you’re too spoilt for choice! Joe, Julie, Matthew and Danielle all work in whichever department they are needed and their versatility is a big help in the smooth running of our stores. Phil Heath is the business owner. He’s an incredibly busy man who is always on the go. Whether it’s delivering orders to local businesses, serving customers or hot footing it to countless meetings, he’s earned himself the nickname of “The Scarlet Pimpernel!”

Our Values

As an independent retailer, we know the value of a happy customer. We pride ourselves on our friendly, helpful service. If something you need isn’t in stock, we’ll always try to get hold of it. Whether you’re a business or high street customer, shop local, shop at Heath’s.

Here at Heath’s Toymaster we have so many toys we can not keep them all under one roof! That’s why we have two shops, 76 Dalton Rd and 3 Harrison St

Christmas Markets

Hello everyone, All of a sudden it feels time for the winter clothes to make an appearance so we can wrap up warm from the chilly frosts that will soon greet us each morning. Let’s hope it’s a dry and mild few months ahead. I’ve had a really busy September so far. It seems that since the schools went back, everyone has been kick-started into thinking about holidays again! It’s been non-stop enquiries and bookings to a real range of destinations; Disneyland Paris (incidentally there are some great offers through to 15th October); cruises – National Cruise Week saw cruise companies offer some great promotions for complimentary on board spend and upgraded cabins. I’ve also had requests for Florida, European rail journeys, winter in San Diego - with its appealing Mediterranean climate, and European winter sun too. But what about something closer to home? If you want to take advantage of what the UK has to offer I would definitely recommend a weekend getaway to visit one of the UK’s fantastic Christmas Markets. There are so many to choose from but I would say that Bath is absolutely worth a visit. Running from the end of November to mid December, Bath is being recognised as the ‘Christmas of the West’ with over 150 stalls planned this year. Add to that is the great shopping opportunities the city offers, restaurants and sightseeing too. Bath has some delightful, luxurious hotels to choose from, so why not treat yourself to a hotel with a relaxing spa so

8

you can take some time out at the end of a long day on your feet. If you want to cater for children there is an open air ice rink and a pantomime show of Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs. Bath really does have something to offer the whole family. I can recommend hotels across the country so if the UK Christmas markets appeal to you, I’d be happy to see how I can help. Or if you want to head across to Europe I can search for the best deals available. Keep warm everyone. Sharon. Next month, we’ll head to the slopes to see what’s happening on the ski scene.

Who has wondered where they will go to get their tyres changed since the ATS in Ulverston has shut down. Well Ulverston Tyres has the solution not only can they supply and change tyres for cars and pick-ups but they have the equipment and experience for changing commercial wagon tyres, tractors and various farm vehicles. In fact they have recently changed an antique wheel for Sharphouses, if it’s got a wheel that needs attention Ulverston Tyres can fix it. Cousins John and Matthew Miller have started Ulverston Tyres as their families business in scrap needed somewhere to change their wagons tyres and the cousins saw a gap in the local market and have been trading since April.

Matthew has trained at Armers as an Agricultural Engineer and John as a mechanic so this move into business on their own was a logical step. They have been working on and extending their business premises to provide a tailor made and purpose built tyre changing facility in South Ulverston on Cross Lane behind BSU.

They stock budget, mid-range and premium tyres, what they don’t have on the shop floor they can get within 24hrs. Also in stock are all your winter essentials such as de-icer, new windscreen wipers and even winter tyres.

OCTOBER IS THE POLICE TYRE SAFETY MONTH Ulverston Tyres has some advice to help you. Current UK law requires car drivers to have at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around its entire circumference. Adequate tread is essential in providing better grip and shorter stopping distances in the wet, as well as helping to reduce the risk of aquaplaning. If the tread grooves are not deep enough, water cannot be moved resulting in a loss of grip and traction which can lead to longer stopping distances, reduced

handling and an increased likelihood of aquaplaning.

Check your tyre pressures at least once a month and before a long journey. Having the correct tyre pressure is vital to your safety on the road. Under-inflated tyres affect handling and grip, potentially causing irregular or unpredictable vehicle behaviour. They are also much more likely to suffer from a dangerous blowout, especially on high-speed motorway journeys.

By keeping your tyres at their optimum pressure, your running costs are also reduced. Under-inflated tyres require a bigger force to make them turn, so your car uses more fuel. Additionally, tyres which are not set to their correct pressure wear out quickly.

Inspect tyres for any cuts, bulges, uneven wear or objects embedded in the tread.

Are you eating emotionally or rationally? Are you feeding you stomach, or feeding your feelings? Often the answer is both. We need to eat to fuel the body, but sometimes we eat to satisfy our feelings. It could be particular foods because we’re happy, sad or even bored, but when we eat for reasons other than physical hunger, it’s emotional eating.

Eating when we’re not really hungry is a sure way to add unnecessary calories (and kilos!) that can quickly ruin your weight management programme. So how do you beat emotion eating? Know the difference and then manage it.

Knowing the difference:

Emotional eating appears suddenly, physical hunger comes on gradually. Even if you’re full, you’re more likely to keep eating if it’s to satisfy a feeling. If your stomach is growling for food, you’ll eat almost anything to fill the gap. If you crave a particular food such as ice cream, chocolate or potato crisps, you’re probably eating to feed a feeling. Emotional eating feels like it you need to eat the food you crave instantly, whereas if it’s physical hunger, it can wait. You may feel guilty after emotional eating, but if you’re physically hungry you won’t.

Managing emotional eating:

See if you can recognise what feelings cause you to want to eat emotionally. Take your mind off the craving by doing something else – try going for a walk, do some housework or talk to a friend. Find a comfort food that’s a healthy alternative, so when the feeling comes you’ve

14

got an option that isn’t junk food. If you’re on a diet, elimination of all unhealthy foods can do more harm than good. For example, if you can’t live without chocolate, don’t deny yourself completely. Have a small portion, and then put it away. It’s about moderation, not elimination. Sometimes it’s just a taste you need. So try eating only a few bites. You’re likely to remember the satisfying experience, rather than the guilty feeling after you’ve finished the whole pack!

If you recognise that you’re eating for an emotion, remember that whatever your food choice, learn how to control it and use moderation.

Ooooh more recipes.

Chop the onions and grate the carrots. Melt the butter or margarine and sauté the onion until transparent. Add the grated carrots and thyme and simmer gently, stirring frequently, for 10 minutes. Stir in the flour and yeast extract and season to taste. Leave to cool. Roll out a generous half of the pastry and use to line an 8" pie plate or flan tin. Layer with

the lentils and veg mixture and top with the remaining pastry. Seal the edges and flute with a fork. Make two slashes in the centre of the pie and decorate with diamond slivers of pastry if desired. Bake in the oven at 200°C (400°F/Gas Mark 6) for about half an hour until golden. Serve hot, warm or cold. There are wheat free pastries available but for this week as no one is exhibiting wheat intolerance we can go with a wholemeal pastry.

Lakes Legal Limited

Lifetime gifts and Inheritance Tax

Most people have heard of Inheritance Tax, which is a tax charged on the value of your assets (known as your estate) at the Hannah Elizabeth Bell LLB Director date of your death. Photo: Powder & Paint Photography Put simply; the current rules state that all individuals can leave assets up to the value of £325,000.00 before inheritance tax is charged. If the total value of your estate is in excess of £325,000.00 then the excess will be subject to tax at 40%. The tax threshold of £325,000.00 for most people means they don’t have to be concerned about inheritance tax. However individuals who have assets in excess of £325,000.00 often ask how they can mitigate the tax burden to their estate so that they can pass more of their assets to their loved ones. Some believe that by transferring assets to their loved ones during their lifetime they will escape any potential inheritance tax charge but this is not strictly true. Under the rules individuals can give away assets up to the value of £3,000.00 each year without any inheritance tax burden. Additionally, individuals can make number of smaller gifts of up to £250.00 to their chosen beneficiaries at any point without incurring an inheritance tax liability. If a gift in excess of £3,000.00 is made then it is known as a potentially exempt transfer, or a PET. These gifts or PETs are then subject to the seven-year rule. Many people are aware of a seven-year rule but often don’t know what it effects. In a nutshell if you make a gift in excess of £3,000.00 you would need to

survive the gift by seven years in order for that gift not to form part of your estate for inheritance tax purposes. Essentially gifts which are made within the seven years prior to your death that are in excess of £3,000.00 are read back into your estate and are subject to inheritance tax in full or in part. Lifetime giving can however be a useful mechanism for families who are looking to pass wealth to the next generation. So long as gifting is planned properly in advance there are advantages. Lakes Legal Limited provide inheritance tax planning and advice as standard when preparing client wills. Have you been

naughty or nice?

20

Here at Two by Two Ulverston we love to find something that is made with love and over the years have been fortunate to find all kinds of treats that have been sourced from John O Groats to Lands End, from far away across the Ocean and even from right here in Ulverston. Our socks are different however, we have a fine selection of socks and while we aren’t entirely sure where they come from we have our ideas. Santa's elves are pretty busy from October through December, answering mail, adjusting the naughty/nice list and generally organising presents. However, following their January vacations, the elves have some spare time and it is our firm belief, here at Two by Two, that the elves run a separate operation during the rest of the year knitting socks. These socks are truly special, beautiful in colour and design and made from organic wool, cotton and bamboo. We can only guess that the elf socks have a neutral carbon footprint since elves deliver everything by reindeer and sleigh and the only fuel required is carrots. We have been lucky enough to stock these socks for a couple of seasons now and people do get excited about them. When they arrive at the shop, we put them in the window and before you can say knit one purl one they have gone their separate ways, home to happy feet. People buy them for presents and people buy them for themselves‌in multiple pairs‌. and when they are gone people ask when they will be back in stock. You might think that we would keep such popular socks on our shelves all the time but it doesn't work www.thepinfold.com

like that...the elves are particular. First off you have to know about the socks and Two by Two discovered them purely by chance on another exhibitors stand at a trade fair and they weren't exactly well advertised…. ......then you have to place your order which you do by filling out a form and leaving it in the bucket. There are no contact details for the socks just a PO Box number in Norway. We aren’t entirely sure who collects the forms or who takes the bucket away and experience has proved that ordering is in fact a bit of a pointless task anyway since you can wish for what you like but in reality the elves will only ever send you what you deserve. If you want to re-order it’s a message up the chimney job. The elves aren’t the only ones however, earlier this year we got wind that the fairies had set up in the sock business too and we managed to track down an operation run by a French group. This is our first season with the fairy socks and so far it’s proving to be quite tricky. It seems that like the elves the fairies also have quite high expectations and thus so far we have only receive a very small box….a mere quarter of the amount we ordered. We’ve tried to contact them to plead for more but fairies are notoriously shy and so far we have been out of luck. Until they get used to us I think we will just have to be on our very best behaviour and hope for more deliveries. Elf socks are £13 for the short and £17 for the long, Fairy socks are £8 for short and £12 for long, Fairy tights are £20....get them while you can.... 52 Market Street Ulverston LA12 7LS T 01229 480703
