Distributing 7000 copies a month The October issue is here and I bring you some great local encouraging stories this month. Grab a cup of your favourite warm, comforting beverage and find a sun beam as we are fortunate to still have the sun with us as this late stage of summer, and enjoy. Halloween is nearly upon us, fun for the kids and the Ulverston Candle lit walk is always an excellent alternative to trick or treating, and most suitable solution for those a little young for trick or treating but still want to be a part of the Halloween scaretivities. Even though we have a had a wonderful sunny warm summer, soon the leaves on our trees will be changing to the most marvellous autumn glows, shortly we will be putting on our heating and cosying up preparing for the winter months ahead. After the glorious summer we have had I feel I am ready to take on winter we have some exciting months ahead. As always I would like to thank Lorraine Oates Photography for the editor’s photograph.

Ask the Gaffer, Anthony Holden
Lawrence on the move with 2 by 2 What’s going on in October?
A few months ago I attended a dinner where the guest speaker was Vince Cable and he gave out what I thought was a very cautious message. When everyone was seeing the green shoots of recovery blossoming all around he sounded a note of caution. His logic was that the economy was growing, the recovery has begun but interest rates were at an historic low and had been so for an extended period of time. Dr Cable also reminded guests that the policy of ‘quantitative easing’ – printing money in layman’s terms -was still being followed by the Bank of England and only when these artificial stimuli were removed from the national economy would we get a good picture of what the recovery was really like. However, I believe here in Furness and West Cumbria we have less need for Dr Cable’s reticence. We stand on the threshold of a period of economic growth the like of which we have not seen since the early 1980’s when the Devonshire Dock Hall was built for the Trident programme and the Centrica South Morecambe Terminal was constructed. Thanks to Furness Economic Development Forum we can now quantify the scale of the investment. They have estimated that planned investment in Furness and West Cumbria over the next 6- 12 years -mostly 6-8 years - to be £20.74bn. This comprise investment in premises and facilities by BAE for the successor programme, the NUgen
reactors at Moorside near Sellafield, the GSK plant in Ulverston and others including Centrica and Dong Energy. On the back of this investment Furness Economic Development Forum estimate that strategic manufacturing programmes running out to the 2030’s have a value of £22.76bn.To quote from FEDF ‘Current estimates suggest this growth and investment planned for the Furness area will led to at least 4350 permanent high value jobs along with £180m GVA. Provided barriers can be overcome this will provide unique opportunities for growth to maximise new investment, develop skills, inspire young people to pursue rewarding career paths, create opportunities for knowledge based enterprises, strengthen the supply chain presence of established companies and deliver a sustainable future for the Assisted area.’ These are extraordinary numbers, to put it a different way the initial investments alone are the equivalent of about one and a half London Olympic Games. Put in a Cumbrian context they mean South West Cumbria will be the economic powerhouse of the Cumbria and the Council and others have been successful in ensuring the LEP reflects this in its Strategic Economic Plan. If the Furness area is to benefit from the huge investments the Councils job along with private sector employers is to make sure that as much of
this investment as possible ‘sticks’ in the Furness economy and, of course, in Barrow in particular. So how are we going to do it? Firstly, we now have a clear strategy for delivering the change that is needed. This has been pulled together by Furness Economic Development Forum and sets out a clear list of things we need to do particularly in the area of new skills development, supply chain development and infrastructure developments. The capex phase of these projects will result in well over 6000 construction jobs being needed at the same time. The Furness area has great strengths particularly in vocational skills through Furness College and they were successful in attracting funding from the first round of Growth Deal from the LEP for a new facility to increase engineering apprenticeships. The document also sets out the new infrastructure requirements including rail and road and land and premises. Secondly we need premises where new business linked to BAE’s supply chain can be located and as part of this we have successfully bid for Funds from Cumbria LEP to bring forward £7m of finance to create a mini enterprise zone on the Waterfront Barrow industrial park. The Waterfront Barrow bid was the largest approved by the LEP board. Thirdly, we have just published the first consultative phase of our local plan. This sets out the options for development of the Borough over the next 15 years, a long timescale I know, but I would very much encourage everyone to have a look at the document and engage in the process. It covers a very wide range of issues from how much new housing and employment land should be approved to what the future of the town centre will be. Which leads me rather nicely on to the Town Centre and I’m sure most people would agree that Barrow town centre needs to be improved. But there is a very wide range of views about what these improvements should be. Actually Barrow town centre is a product largely of something we
can do nothing about – where we are. This limits its retail catchment to about 100 -120,000 and national chains make their decisions on these things. What we CAN do is make sure that the centre is as attractive as possible when companies make and investment decision and that there is a clear view about how the centre will be marketed and improved over a sustained period of time. Which leads me to Business Improvement Districts. The principle of BIDs is that within a prescribed area, usually town centres, an additional 1% levy on their business rates placed in a pool to carry out an agreed programme of works. These could be a programme of events, marketing, additional public transport, whatever it might be. BID’s operate on the basis of a proposition being put to all businesses in a BID area and the all rates paying businesses having a vote on it and a majority of numbers and rateable value is needed for the vote to be successful. They operate widely across the country, locally Kendal has just agreed a BID Ulverston is also progressing down that route. The Borough Council commissioned a consultant to go around the town centre to canvass the views of businesses and has provided a very positive assessment about progressing with a BID. It’s also clear to me that we need to take a comprehensive look at the way that traffic is managed and flows through the town centre. This was last done many years ago. And yes this should include parking. We are in discussions with CCC about conducting a comprehensive traffic assessment and we have offered to contribute £20,000 to this. The future for the economy of the Furness Area is better than I can ever remember in my working lifetime. It’s up to everyone to make sure that we get the most advantage we can from it. "Relationships between teachers and pupils are strong and expectations for pupils achievement is high" OFSTED June 2014 Described by a parent as “a hidden gem” Newton Primary is a small village school with 50 pupils on roll. It is situated on the outskirts of the village of Newton in Furness in an attractive rural environment. It is close to both Dalton and Barrow in Furness. I am Lisa Fell the head teacher of Newton School. As a former pupil with many close links to the village and its community, I am passionate about developing and leading the school forward. The school prides its self on its warm friendly ethos and close relationships with parents. Each morning for Literacy and Numeracy all the children work in groups of around 12.These small numbers allow the children to have a personalised curriculum adapted to the children’s interests and needs. Whole school activities develop effective relationships and life skills such as cooperation and collaboration. Our most recent OFSTED inspection (June 2014) judged the school to be good in every area. These are just a few of the quotes from our Ofsted report: "The level of care and support afforded to pupils in this small village school is second to none" and “pupils’ attainment across the school is outstanding” June 2014. People who visit the school are always surprised how big it is inside and what great facilities we have.We have four well equipped classrooms and a large hall. There is a large outdoor play area that includes a grassed area and adventure playground. There are also two enclosed areas for younger children.

WARNING!
The Gill in Ulverston is about to be engulfed with flames!
It's a good thing though, so say the organisers of this year's Candlelit Walk, igniting Friday, October 31 at 6.30pm. JENNIE DENNETT puts the case for the everyday fire enthusiast.
Candlelight is a beautiful thing. It's the light of romantic suppers a deux, of indulgent baths, of birthday cakes. All is cosy in the glow of Man's Red Flower, the magical stuff that keeps the dark away, the beasts at bay and the toes unfrozen.
Which is why a group of flame enthusiasts has been busy plotting this year's Candlelit Walk - only six years of age but that's never limited its candle-count. Wax Lyrical in Lindal-in-Furness has again donated sweet-smelling wax and there are more than 500 candles ready to be placed along The Gill to create our magical stroll in the shadowy woods.

This year we're getting glitzy too, inviting you to make masquerade masks to wear on the night to
catch the glow of firelight. The glitter & glue will be out for a special workshop at the Ulverston Scrap Store where we've already made one of 10 shadowscreens to decorate the route. We're also hoping you'll bring along your pumpkins on the night to show them off for a carving display.
The Candlelit Walk is a scary event to stage, if you've been with us before you'll remember Downpour 2012 when it was more of a candlelit huddle. But we will hold our nerve and ready our lighters. The fire hoop performer is booked, fire drawings ready to be etched in flaming rope, there's a story teller, a choir, ukuleles and a band playing hacked electronics. Because Halloween should offer more treat than tricks and what better way to mark the passing of the seasons than with fire. Together we shall thrust candles into the dark and laugh in the face of the night as it closes in for winter.
Huge thanks to Ulverston Town Council & SLDC who're supporting this year's event. Mask making at the Ulverston Scrap Store, Cavendish St, Oct 11 from 10. More details at www.facebook.com/candlelitwalk

Lakes Legal Limited Dealing with Death
Whenever someone dies it is hard for those left behind to cope. It is a deeply emotional time but there are administrative duties you have to complete within certain timeframes.
Within the first few days following the death you must get a medical certificate from a GP or hospital doctor to register the death. If you procure the services of a funeral director they usually do this for you.

estate. If the funeral is to be paid for using assets from the estate most banks and building societies will release funds from the deceased’s accounts to pay for their funeral without a Grant of Probate.
If you have difficulties paying for the funeral you can apply for a state funded ‘Funeral Payment’. The amount of Funeral Payment you receive will depend upon your circumstances and whether you qualify. If the funeral is to take place abroad you will need to apply to the Coroner for permission to remove the body from the country.
Once the funeral has taken place you then need to turn your attention to the administration of the deceased’s estate and consider whether you need Next you have to register the death at the registry to apply for a Grant of Probate. On the Algarve
Gorgeous white sandy beaches, rocky coastline and fun for all the family… on The Algarve. The Algarve stretches most of the Southern coast of Portugal and provides something for everyone. Hot days, warm evenings and welcoming temperatures from Easter through to November. I would highly recommend hiring a car for this holiday, it’s the best way to get around and discover so many places, from neighbouring towns and beautiful fishing villages, to a drive up into the mountains or a mediaeval town (my favourite, Silves, is delightful). For the first week I made arrangements locally for a car hire with a difference and had one day with a Mahari jeep. I had great fun taking it to the Western most point of Portugal where we visited the fort at Sagres. The second day we hired a Citroen 2CV and moved from beach to beach in true retro style! It’s affordable, great fun and a little bit different! Our ‘normal’ Seat Ibiza for week 2 was perhaps more practical, but comfortable and cheap to run, and I would not have been without it. Taxis are cheap, but in the height of the season you can have a long wait, and it’s not always straight forward to flag them down if you are not staying in the main towns. So it’s car hire every time for me. Day to day if you want to stay on dry land, enjoy long lazy days at the beach, but if you get restless, activities are too numerous to mention but range from horse riding or go- karting. The beaches, again, there are too many to mention here, are nestled amongst the

stunning rocky coastline. They are amongst some of the most beautiful I have ever visited and plenty offer the opportunity to swim in the sea. Most have a small café / restaurant on them but it’s normal for families to take picnics and an umbrella and stay until the sun sets. After a long day at the beach why not follow this with a sand free day and visit one of the large waterparks. They have excellent facilities whether you have infants or have taken the grandparents (you’re never too old). Again you can take your own food and set up camp for the day as they provide lockers, it’s easily a full day out. I mention the umbrella again, you can place these on the grassy area and they are a welcome shelter from the midday sunshine. There’s Zoomarine too – watch and swim with dolphins, visit the aquarium, relax at the man-made beach, go on the waterslides and much more! In August just be aware it’s the busiest month by far, and these places do get very busy. It would be remiss of me not to mention the golf, as the Algarve offers a great selection of champion golf courses, the pick of the bunch being in Quinta da Lago. These are getting more popular with golfing pals, but also group trips, so if you’re looking to head for a short break with your golfing buddies, it’s ideal. For water sports lovers, areas off the coast offer a constant breeze and windsurfers and kite surfers will be spoilt for choice too. For a family activity why not kayak to a secluded beach on an organised trip, accessible only from the sea and snorkel to discover sea life with an expert guide. But to get away from it all, there are many places to drive to off the beaten track and enjoy some peace and quiet. Overall, it’s a slower pace of life than many of us experience in the UK and I'd advise you to stay couple of weeks if you can as for those of us leading such busy lives here, I think it can take a couple of days to get used to! But wherever you choose, and I am more than happy to share my advice and recommendations, I am sure it is a place you will want to return again and again. Next month – read all about my ship visit to the Royal Princess, I’m sure it will get you wanting to cruise… www.facebook.com/thepinfold

There are many ways we source the unique things we stock at Two by Two Ulverston. Often we visit showrooms in Manchester, twice a year we travel to London for the international clothing exhibition PURE and sometimes we just notice something on someone and ask politely if we can have a look at the label. If we are really lucky an agent will come right to our doorstep bringing samples with them and we can browse at our leisure. One such agents that we catch up with twice a year since we opened our doors back in 2001 is Lawrence Pater. Lawrence is an Irish knitwear specialist who travels the length of the UK from The Scilly Isles to Shetland. Lawrence travels the distance by BUS with giant suitcases of knitwear in tow. Every now and again, Lawrence turns up at the Ulverston bus station with new season merinos, cashmeres, super soft Shetlands and incredible Donegal tweeds. We always look forward to his visit and when he leaves we wonder where he will go next. I recently called Lawrence and caught him on the bus to Nairn, outside of Inverness to ask him a few questions about being a Man on the Move! Rachael: How long have you been a knitwear agent? Lawrence: 15 years Rachael: What did you do before you did this job? Lawrence: I had a shop of my own in Bath for a couple of years where I sold men’s and ladies knitwear. Before that I worked in Windsor in a knitwear shop and before that in a Menswear store on the Kings road in Chelsea. I guess I set myself on this path when I took my first Saturday job as a youngster at Harry Fentons. Rachael: Do you work all year round? Lawrence: I take November and December off but I get awfully bored. I try to relax and visit friends but I’m really glad when I get back on the road. Rachael: How many shops do you visit and which is the most remote? Lawrence: I have about 130 accounts. I travel as far north as The Shetland Islands and as far south as The

Scilly Isles but the most remote destination would have to be either Benbecular in the Outer Hebrides as it takes so long to get there or the Isle of Eigg of the Scottish west coast, as so few people live there (less than 100) and there are no roads. Rachael: Where do you like to stay when you are on the road? Lawrence: Anywhere where I can smoke! Rachael: Do you have a favourite route? Lawrence: No my routes often turn out to be different and I don’t have a favourite place. I just love the changes I experience as I move from place to place. Rachael: What do you like to eat on the road?: Lawrence: I mainly eat sandwiches and soup in the winter. When I’m in Scotland I can look forward to a square sausage sandwich, a potato scone and haggis. I like to do something different each night …. Indian, pub food, fish and chips…when I’m in Ulverston I usually have take out Chinese. Rachael: do you knit on the bus?
Lawrence: No I read magazines! Rachael: It’s thanks to you that we are able to stock Fisherman out of Ireland knitwear at Two by Two which remains a firm favourite with our customer’s year on year. What do you think makes the Irish knitwear so special? Lawrence: They insist upon wearable styles in the best quality yarn. Each year some new styles are introduced, however their success is a result of a core range of styles that are completely timeless that their customers can rely on and buy with confidence every year, like the Donegal Tweed Roll Neck pullover that you stock at Two by Two. Rachael: What would be your dream job? Lawrence: This is my dream job I love it!! I get to travel somewhere different every day. I’m 64 now and I hope to do it until I am physically and mentally able to! Rachael: What’s your top travel tip? Lawrence: Always ring the Travel Line. I work out my route then call them and they advise me the best and cheapest way to travel, be it by bus, coach or train. Lucky for me since I turned 60 I am able to travel by train and coach at 30% discount and by bus for free! Rachael: Where are you going next Lawrence? Lawrence: I’m off to Ullapool next….see you next time!
