elcome to the 9th edition of The Pinfold magazine. I am very excited to announce that as of this issue, The Pinfold will be looked after by Sarah Williamson. Sarah is an experienced design and print manager based just outside of Ulverston. She moved to Furness in 2002 and fell in love with the area. The Pinfold allowed me to meet lots of interesting people and learn so much about the fantastic area we live in, it's lovely to know that it will continue to grow.

Vicki

great big thank you to Vicki for letting me look after The Pinfold for her. Another great big thank you to everyone who has supported me in my very first issue of The Pinfold. I have thoroughly enjoyed putting it together and look forward to a long and properous future with all that are involved.

This month we have an emphasis on local businesses, we would like to celebrate our rich variety of hard working entrepreneurs that can often run in the background but are so important in making our everyday lives run smoothly. In October’s issue our focus is going to be on local places to eat, pubs, hotels, restaurants, coffee shops, this would be a fantastic place for you to advertise your Christmas party offers, so if you are interested I have a not to be missed offer for advertising your business. If you would like to advertise your business or local event in The Pinfold please do not hesitate to contact me. I would also like to thank Lorraine Oates, Powder & Paint Photography for the editors photograph. Have a lovely September.

Roots of Nature began after myself and my family moved to Mill Gate which offered us a generous supply of woodland and space. This was a complete contrast to what we had been used to at our last house. Previously we had often noticed natural formations in rocks and interesting shapes belonging to roots from fallen trees. We found so much mystery in all the naturally carved, fossilised crevices and all the twisted and knotted illusion shapes. There were quite a few earthed over lumps and bumps around the woodland. Many of which were nothing more than large ant hills. Soon we became obsessed during every walk looking around for these fascinating shapes with all of their possibilities.

Our first found root sat over our newly created path way, it seemed quite at home there, and looked very much like a Dragon. Once we got it home, we decided we could

8

clean and work with these ancient pieces of wood. Using a little creative flair we saw all sorts of artistic and inspirational uses, statements and smiles that could be gained from these beautiful pieces of wood. Our dragon was later turned over, further cleaned revitalised and rediscovered to revealed its self as a magnificent bird of prey which we decided to be an osprey. At that point we made plans to use my husband’s 26 years experience in the building and construction industry and both of our experience in interior design to create completely unique sculptures, water features and functional and non functional statement art pieces. Our daughter Neave has input many interesting, artistic ideas. All three of us were excited by many of our roots having a resemblance of animals and flowers. We felt Roots of Nature would make a lovely name and a good addition to Stephen ‘s busy and established work as a builder. He has designed and worked many fabulous landscaping projects over the years. Some of which can be seen on his website: www.stephengrindrod.co.uk.

We felt our Osprey would be the perfect first water feature and had ear marked the perfect position to site it within our newly created wildlife pond at Mill Gate. After a long while of searching we found the most suitable enthusiastic blacksmith whose business name is Iron Awe. Our design was worked into the magical piece it became. We also found another root which gave strong lines of an Iris we commissioned this also with him and had another great result. Both Pieces gained many We have a varied; encompassing stock. Many great responses and much interest at Holker of our abstract multi functional and illusional Garden Festival this June. Despite the roots make great talking points. Our sculptures are now for sale we can also offer any design advice required. As the works and renovations are beginning to increase at Mill Gate and the start of our Roots of Nature display area evolves we invite you to book a viewing have a relaxing coffee taking in the elevated view for miles around over the estuary while you ponder, maybe discovering that perfect focal feature piece for your garden or interior. It really showed what a good work team we have and that the hard work paid off, judging by the super compliments we received. The Animal roots gave lots of pleasure Elmo Elephant, Jemima Puddleduck and not forgetting my little interior piece the Gecko won the hearts of many. sarah@thepinfold.com

A week in the life of a nautical T shirt…….

“I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky. And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by….”

It is a wonderful picture of nautical longing painted in

1

amongst the waves if the seamen fell overboard. The original Breton Pattern includes 21 stripes, one for each of Napoleon’s victories and was worn by both sailors and fishermen.

Coco Chanel spotted the stripe wearing fishermen in the early 1900’s on the beaches of the French Riviera and decided to include them in her collection. The humble Breton was transported to the Paris runways and has remained in vogue ever since. Chanel paired simple Breton stripes with loose linen trousers creating casual chic, which was revolutionary at a time when most women still wore corsets.

the poem Sea Fever by John Masefield. Listening to these words I can feel the ocean breeze and smell the salt and I can visualise our moonlighting mariner tying knots, climbing the mast and wearing a Breton striped T shirt. Nothing evokes the nautical mood and the spirit of the seaside more than a shirt of sailor stripes it’s the visual version of putting a bottle to your ear to hear the sound of the waves.

2

The Breton Striped T shirt was originally designed for French sailors in response to a law passed in 1958 making it part of their naval uniform. It was hoped that the white and navy horizontal stripes would be easily spotted

16

www.thepinfold.com

Following in Chanel’s footsteps, once you start wearing stripes it’s quite hard to stop. There is something soothing about the reliable straight lines, the geometry of which makes them work with any colour or pattern. Stripes can

make your outfit, classic and chic, polished and sharp even surprising and unique. In short, even though you might have worn your Breton a hundred times it still has the ability to make your outfit look fresh. The nautical T shirt is worn by both men and women across the year making it a wardrobe essential and a brilliant Tran seasonal garment. Some people worry that horizontal stripes won’t flatter their figure but there are a lot of stripes around these days in different colours and sizes, and I really believe there is a stripe for everyone.

1. Monday, get that brand new back to school feel at the office by adding some straight lines. 2. Tuesday, the humble Breton is the perfect print complimenting other prints famously. 3. Wednesday, Breton T shirt and jeans work together like fish and chips. 4. Thursday, if you aren’t sure of the overall stripe effect, use your stripes for layering. 5. Friday, don’t be afraid of stripes on stripes you can’t go overboard with a wardrobe essential. 6. Saturday, wear classic Chanel inspired Breton with loose linens and accessorise with baguettes.

4

The Two by Two Vero Moda nautical T shirt is a good place to start, it is 97% cotton and 3% lycra, is available in sizes S - XL and costs £12. For more fashion frolics follow thefashionfruitcake.blogspot.co.uk

There’s also lots of ways to get involved ‘behind the scenes’. We still need volunteers to lend a hand with preparations, or be a Steward on the night. Perhaps you have some great ideas you’d like to share. The Ulverston Lantern Festival is now entirely organised by volunteer members of our community (like me!) and we’d love you to join us – as a community we rely on each other to keep Britain’s original Lantern Festival strong and vibrant! Look out for our Lantern Festival posters and flyers for workshop details, and join our Facebook page to share ideas, ask questions, post pictures and chat with other Lanterneers. Have the piece of mind to go on holiday and relax knowing that your dog/dogs are having their holiday too. Each dog is treated as an individual and each stay is tailored to suit each dog’s needs. From the most active dog who will benefit from the regular exercise throughout the day to a much gentler pace for our more senior friends who are still “youngsters at heart”. We have lots of walking, playing and interaction to make each day different and exciting. Each dog is treated with respect and care and you can rest assured, knowing they are being looked after in a safe secure environment. We have 6 kennels so can offer a hands on personal service, giving each dog the time and attention they need. Stays can be anything from 1 night onwards. All our kennels are heated and lighted and we are licensed with South Lakes District Council. Clipping Grooming & Bathing Our grooming parlour is now open. Have your dog bathed, clipped or just groomed. We offer a half-day pamper session: this includes a walk and a play in the paddock followed by a bath, a groom or a clip and then a blow dry to finish. Alternatively, coming into the winter months why not arrange for your dog to have a regular bath and blow dry to keep them and the house fresh-smelling. Why not contact me for a chat about your dog’s grooming requirements.

The New Laurel and Hardy Museum

After many happy years at our old site, the museum was starting to get over crowded and, due to the hobbyist way it had been started, some of the pictures were beginning to look past their best so it was decided that a new location should be sought. After much deliberation the Roxy cinema complex was decided on as our new site.

Opened on the 19th of April 2009 to coincide with the unveiling of the statue in the town centre, there’s still plenty to read; now presented in a much more accessible way for the casual fan, while still retaining plenty of depth for your favourite Son of the Desert. The cinema is still there, now with 15 seats but no chance of banging your head on the ceiling! We’re actually on the stage of the Roxy, so being on stage in a 1930s period cinema feels like a great place to be. The museum is still a work in progress and we hope to be adding new things all the time, visit our website: www.laurel-and-hardy.co.uk, this is also where you will find our online shop for gift ideas or your Laurel and Hardy memorabilia, become our friend on Facebook or follow us on Twitter for more info on what we’re up to.
