Distributing 7000 copies a month The summer holidays are very much over, the kids are back at school. I hope you all managed to find a few days to enjoy a break and find some fun time with family and friends. A chance to recharge the batteries and get ready to prepare for the seasons which are about to change. I have some great photos entered into our win a ‘Summer is Here Chocolate Collection’ from Thorntons and I can’t wait to publish some of the photo entries in the October issue. Although now it definitely feels like summer is coming to an end. It has flown by, I can’t believe we are heading towards Christmas at warp speed. In the meantime we have Ulverston’s Lantern Festival to look forward to.Which is a personal favourite of mine. Ford Park is preparing for a large wedding show as they launch themselves as a new wedding venue and what a fabulous setting for a wedding! Have a great September and I hope the weather shows some mercy and gives us a little more summer before the dark nights and mornings start to arrive. As always I would like to thank Lorraine Oates Photography for the editor’s photograph and Naomi Bartlett for the lovely cover photo.

‘What’s Under Hoad?’ is the theme for Ulverston Lantern Festival 2014 People from across South Lakes are being challenged to let their imaginations run riot by speculating on what could be hidden under Hoad Hill for the theme of the 2014 Ulverston Lantern Festival. The Festival takes place on Saturday September 13th from 7.15pm as the culmination of the town’s Charter celebrations, and a ‘River of Light’ procession will make its way through the town before a firework display at Ford Park as the climax to the event. Lantern kits are currently on sale at the Coronation Hall, Laurel & Hardy Museum, The Book Stall in the Market Hall and Costa Coffee, and lantern-making sessions will take place at the Lanternhouse every day from Sept 5th through to Sept 12th from 1.30pm - 3.30pm, 4.30pm - 6.30pm and 7.30pm - 9.30pm. Full details available on the Lantern Festival Facebook page or call 07761 930627 for more information. The theme for the Festival been chosen to provide maximum scope for local people to use their ingenuity in creating a truly breath-taking procession through the town. Committee chairman Peter Adams explains: “Caverns under Ulverston’s wonderful iconic landmark could be the haunt of a sleeping dragon and its treasure trove, the final resting place of the Holy Grail and King Arthur’s knights, it could hold a Viking longship left their by raiders 1000 years ago, or an alien space vessel

reminiscent of ‘War of the Worlds’. “Hoad could hide a James Bond-style secret submarine base with an underground lagoon linked to the shipyard by a subterranean channel, and a gateway to a hidden ocean home to deep sea creatures which use light to attract their prey in the darkness– like the Angler fish? The possibilities are endless.” Business involvement co-ordinator for the Festival Chris Nelson hopes that local companies will be inspired to be represented in the festival and help with the preparations for it. “More than anything we want more local businesses and people involved in the Festival because it belongs to the local community.” Ends

Oubas Knitwear: An Update

As Ulverston based knitwear company, Oubas Knitwear, approaches its second birthday, it can celebrate fantastic growth and a name that is growing from strength to strength. At Two by Two customers who have come to love the brand find themselves making repeat purchases and recommending it to others. We are excited this month to see what Oubas Knitwear has in store for us for the winter months ahead. I got together with Oubas founder Kate Wilson to find out… Rachael: What has been your best product so far? Kate: The Brant; the scarf sells consistently well through winter and summer as it is so versatile. It’s a warm cosy scarf in winter and works brilliantly as a shawl in summer. Rachael:Yes, the Brant has been a scarf sensation at Two by Two; we have never sold so many of units of the same scarf so fast. So is it hard to come up with new products and colours? Kate: It is hard when a product like the Brant does so well. It would be great to design other pieces that enjoy the same success. I’m constantly being inspired through research and the world around me – colours, shapes and ideas for textures. The challenge is working out the strongest pieces to put into the collection while the business is still in its early stages. Rachael: What does Oubas Knitwear have in store for us for Autumn Winter 2014? Kate: I have a refreshed colour range, so the Brant is

10

available in new colours, and I’ve introduced a poncho in a Fisherman rib, which aims to be a wearable piece to layer over a jumper, dress or a T-shirt. I’m also excited to introduce patterned pieces into the range… a two colour gradient striped scarf and a two colour patterned knit that will be available in both a headband and a wide cowl. Rachael: Have you introduced any garments into the collection? Kate:Yes. For autumn there’s a Twist Front Tee in a Cashmere/Linen blend, which will be available in two classic colour ways of oatmeal and black. Earlier in the year I introduced the Batwing Cardigan and Twist Front Jumper; the cardigan was so popular at Two by Two that I couldn’t meet the supply. While I remain a one man band I unfortunately won’t be able to supply these garments to retail, although they will still be available. Rachael: What are the challenges of still being a solo operation? Kate: I am challenged by time and space. I still operate from a room in my parents’ house ….which is now spreading into the corridor! Please come and see it when it’s open to the public as part of C-Art in September. I’m fortunate to have the invaluable help of UVHS year 12 student Emily Dickson who works on the finishing of the pieces. However, at this stage in business I’m not able to invest in more equipment or larger premises so all the knitting is done by me. Rachael:Would you consider having your products manufactured elsewhere? Kate: Yes, it’s definitely something I’ve always considered. As Oubas Knitwear grows I would like to invest in supporting the British textile industry, by using small factories that are used to working with the same quality of yarn. It might be that some Oubas products are outsourced, while others are still made by hand in Cumbria. Rachael: What is the most exciting and satisfying thing about running your own business? Kate: Seeing people in town, and shopping in Booths who are wearing the things I’ve made, is an amazing feeling. Rachael: Do you have the same enthusiasm as when you started? Where would you like to be in another 2 years? Kate: I‘m definitely still excited. My confidence has grown as the business has progressed as I feel I’m out of the scariest period of establishing a name and branding. Another 2 years from now I’d love to have a workshop studio and be able to invest in some more equipment so I can employ someone and also run workshops, sharing my knowledge with those in the community. I’m hoping to run some machine knitting workshops in the Spring. twobytwoonline.com oubasknitwear.co.uk c-art.org.uk

THE ANCIENT ART OF DRY STONE WALLING

My name is Sam Shaw Kilburn. I am 18 years old and I have started my own business. I specialise in Dry Stone Walling and garden landscaping. I have worked under local well known and highly regarded wallers to learn the ancient skill of dry stone walling. Dry stone walls are traditionally built by placing stones together in interlocking patterns without the use of any mortar. The stones you choose are very important as the better the fit the stronger your wall will become. Dry stone walls were originally used to divide up the farming landscape and to clear fields of stone. Nowadays stone walls are also used as features in garden landscaping, town walls as well as in the countryside. I have experience in working with lime stone, sand stone, local slate and all types of locally sourced stone. I come from a family of builders and roofers and have grown up helping on building sites throughout school holidays and weekends. I have worked on projects as small as a fire place and as big as a wall going over the top of a fell. I have also been involved in stone facing a barn conversion. I regularly take on projects such as a 14 foot wall or a 15 foot entrance to a farm.

Vienna – Now or Never!

I thought I would write and tell you about a recent weekend trip to Vienna. Less than 20 minutes from the airport to the city centre and with cheap transport options, Vienna is very accessible and a well-kept secret! With few tour operators selling city breaks to this destination, it’s a great option for a tailor-made break using low cost flights and accommodation (although remember, we offer full financial protection for booking things this way) as when booking on separate websites you won’t get this. Even with a population of almost 2 million the city feels spacious – big wide streets but little traffic noise and fresh air – which is a rare find in a city. It’s clean and very organised. There are restaurants to suit every palate and the food is very reasonably priced with plenty of places to sample the Viennese cuisine. Lots of al fresco dining possibilities – there is always something to see or people to watch (which means you will pay a premium for coffee). There are too many museums and churches to mention, but my favourite was the Hundertwasser museum ‘Kunst Haus Wein’ – a small but interesting display of the work of Friedensreich Hundertwasser. We bought a Vienna card – available for 24 – 72 hours and this gave us access to all the city transport, discounts off museums and at various cafes and restaurants, well worth it in my opinion and I can make some great recommendations. The shopping is plentiful, a mix of touristy, traditional and the big name designers too. Away from the city, less than an hour by train and bus, we found ourselves in the hills looking back on this wonderful city, relax and take time out for brunch at Kahlenberg and enjoy the view. And for all you chocolate lovers out there, you can’t leave without trying a piece of the famous Sachertorte – a dark, rich slice of chocolate cake, the recipe a Viennese secret dating back to 1832, simply divine! It’s time to go to Vienna, now or never… Next month, destination Portugal.
