Winter Wellness
With the change in season comes the return of a chill in the air, and the end of those long summer evenings; the shorter days and colder weather can have a big impact on both our physical and emotional health. Follow our top tips to keep you happy, healthy and motivated throughout the chilly season!
Get snoozing
Longer nights make winter the perfect time to catch up on your sleep. Few of us get the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep a night. Make the most of the darker, shorter evenings and get an early night. Sleep can have a profound effect on your mood and ability to carry out your daily tasks, as well as being vital for good health.
Eat for heat
Wrapping up in winter woollies is one way to keep your body toasty, certain foods can also help by heating us up from the inside. We are naturally drawn to warming soups and hot beverages when it’s cold outside, some foods even stimulate heat production more than others. Pungent ingredients – like spicy ginger, chilli, pepper and garlic – can aid circulation and generate warmth. Coughs and colds are rife at this time of year so make sure you keep your immune system boosted by eating plenty of leafy green vegetables and fruits packed with vitamin C like oranges, grapefruit, strawberries and tomatoes.
The great outdoors
a short walk everyday will keep your vitamin D levels topped up.
Protect from the elements
Winter weather combined with central heating can leave your skin feeling seriously lacklustre; don’t neglect your skin just because it’s easy to hide away under your winter woollies. Tackle dry flaky skin by first exfoliating away the dead skin cells and then applying a rich moisturiser. Although it might seem strange to be thinking about sun damage when it’s so cold outside, UV rays can still penetrate the skin on cloudy days so use a moisturiser with a built-in SPF to protect your skin and keep wrinkles at bay.
Keep moving
Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you should abandon your exercise regime - wrap up warm for a brisk walk or try fun winter activities like outdoor ice skating or dry slope skiing, the cold weather means your body will burn more calories in an effort to keep warm. If venturing outside when it's windy, wet or snowing really doesn’t appeal don’t let the weather set you back, try a workout DVD or using a Wii games console to get fit at home. Kick start your wellbeing with a wellness assessment and body analysis to start you off on the right track. If you need any further help or have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Linda
It’s easy to hibernate indoors during the lindainthelakes@aol.com winter months, but getting outside every day 015395 60313 is important for good health as your body Facebook Linda Stott needs sunlight to create vitamin D – essential for healthy teeth and bones. SIX FURNESS BUSINESSES ANNOUNCED AS FINALISTS IN THE EVA’S 2013
Six Furness-based businesswomen have been announced as finalists in the 2013 Enterprise Vision Awards (EVA’s), the only business awards in the North West exclusive to women.
The awards which are now in their third year, received a record-breaking number of entries meaning the competition to make the shortlist was fierce and the finalists are the crème de la crème in their sector.
The businesswomen from the Furness area who beat off stiff competition to get this far are: From left to right on photograph
Sarah Williamson of Protea Web and Print Design &The Pinfold (Creative category) Linda Stott of Arriba UK (Health & Fitness and Barrow-in-Furness Networker of the Year) Tracy Irwin of TI Payroll and Accounting (Business Woman of the Year) Lorraine Oates of Lorraine Oates Photography (Beauty category) Hannah Bell of Lakes Legal Ltd (Professional Services category) Eleanor Postlethwaite of Photobaby (Creative and Small Business categories) Not photographed
The businesswomen have now been interviewed by panel of judges made up of some of the region’s leading business professionals to represent their businesses in a rigorous process that saw the microscope firmly placed on their company in a bid to scoop the title of winner.
Linda was also voted Furness Networker of the Year by fellow business women at the
6
@ThePinfoldLocal on twitter
Furness Pink Link Ladies networking group and will now be in the running to be voted North West Networker of the Year.
As an EVA winner in 2011 and 2012 Tracy Irwin already knows what notable credibility being a finalist for an award gives to your business. Tracy, who also runs the Furness Pink Link Ladies Group said “I’m delighted to have so many Furness Women in the Finals of the EVA’s, it’s demonstrates what an abundance of outstanding businesswomen we have in the Furness Area”.
Now in their third year, the EVA’s which were founded by Lancashire-based networking group, Pink Link Ladies have carved themselves a solid reputation within the business community and have attracted strong entries from across the North West proving the high regard given to the awards by businesses across the region.
Heather Waters of headline sponsor, NatWest Bank said: "We are delighted to sponsor the EVA Awards 2013 and pleased to see so many female entrepreneurs shortlisted again this year. The EVA Awards play an important part in supporting and recognising female entrepreneurial growth in the Lancashire region, something at NatWest we are committed to supporting ourselves.
“We are dedicated to understanding the needs of female entrepreneurs and hope that through our continuous commitment to helping women in business we will be able to apply business expertise and tangible support to help them realise their ambitions. By the end of this year we will have over 200 Women in Business specialists across the UK who have been through an externally recognised accreditation programme."
Unlike other awards in the area, the EVA’s also incorporates a small percentage of public nomination with its stringent round of judging to choose the winner and people can log on to vote at www.enterprisevisionawards.co.uk before midnight on 20th September. The public votes are then graded before being combined with the judges’ scores to choose the overall winner, however, it is stressed that the judges votes are significantly more heavily weighted. This being the case all the finalist from Furness would be grateful if you have 30 seconds to head over to the website and vote. www.enterprisevisionawards.co.uk
The winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony held at the Hilton Blackpool hotel on Friday 4th October 2013 and will be hosted by 2012 double EVA’s winner, Isla Wilson of Ruby Star Associates.
If you would like to join the Furness Pink Link Ladies or come along to our next meeting, it takes place on Friday the 13th September at Clarence House, Dalton in Furness Just call Tracy on 01229 813388 to let her know you would like to come along.

Boogles and Bump Spotty Otter Spotted at Children’s Boutique
With Autumn just around the corner, you may be now thinking about the new winter coat and the wind and rain that are inevitable in Cumbria!
At Boogles and Bump, we are very proud to be the areas stockist of Spotty Otter outdoor wear and accessories – simply the best gear for kids that we have found out there. Spotty Otter only make kit for kids, meaning it is designed for function to the maximum while still looking good – it isn’t adult stuff scaled down.
The children love it because it allows them to run around, jump in puddles, roll in snow and generally have fun outside. Your only problem is that you may get cold, as Iain found out on Birkrigg with the sledge last winter! Louisa was cosy in her all in one – Iain was freezing in his Musto sailing jacket! Parents love Spotty Otter because it features the finest fabrics, smartest detail, tremendous durability (we have seen a jacket do five siblings before wearing out!), and at the end of all the fun and games it is machine washable – without the need to use tech-wash.
Special Offer at Boogles and Bump on Spotty Otter
In these times of austerity budget has to be a consideration and Spotty Otter is an investment. The great news is that because it tends not to wear out and washes so well – it has a fantastic re-sale value. That is why we are running an offer to trade in your good quality Spotty Otter jackets or all in ones, for the size you need, with up to £25 off. We stock the Spotty Otter

The Laser Lady that can Zap your TAT Hi there, my name is Stephanie Marks and I am the ‘Laser Lady’. My business is tattoo removal. Although tattoo removal is a serious business and embarking on such a procedure should not be taken lightly, I have taken a light hearted approach to my business name and logo. I have been involved with tattoos for nearly 20 years when I started collecting them myself (and yes also made mistakes) and also in a business capacity. Ink is an awkward medium to work with. Inks can vary from Indian ink, to more professional blends, and in some very rare cases I have also known carpet dye to be used.
Laser Lady is here now to help. Even if you have a tattoo done by a nonprofessional I can ‘zap-a- tatt’ to either fade it, in order that a tattooist can put something over the top; or it can be removed completely in most cases. It has taken me 30 months in order to complete training from various sources and I have now been in business since April 2013.
For Laser Lady to ‘zap a tatt’ I can either come to your home within the Furness area or I work from a tattoo studio in Kendal and a Salon in Millom where you can book in for a treatment or consultation. THIS PAGE HAS BEEN SPONSORED BY

Having laser treatment myself helps Laser Lady understand the discomfort the client can be in during & after treatment. I therefore offer advice and a variety of products to ease this discomfort. If you have questions relating to tattoo removal you can find me on Facebook and ask a question on my ‘Laser Lady’ page or send me a text on 07599424453.
Alternatively and probably the best way to get information is to book a FREE Consultation.
If you wish to go ahead with a full or partial removal prices start from as little as £30 for home or studio/salon treatments.
I look forward to your future questions and if after your consultation you still wish to ‘zap-a-tatt’, some treatments. THIS PAGE HAS BEEN SPONSORED BY

Lakes Legal Limited Home Made Wills: The Truth
It is true that under English Law a person can prepare their own will without the assistance of a will writer or solicitor- it is quite common to see will templates available in Post Office stores, and Hannah Elizabeth Bell LLB Director bookshops Photo: Powder & Paint Photography newsagents. Doing it yourself or using a template can seem like a good idea- not only will you save a few quid but you escape the hassle of visiting an office and having to talk about death!
In reality however, doing it yourself or using a template can cost you more in the long run. Although individuals are legally allowed to draw up their own wills they must still comply with the rules regarding will drafting. If the will has not been prepared in accordance with these rules then it will be deemed invalid and so unenforceable.
I have unfortunately seen a number of examples of home made wills being deemed invalid recently, one of which I will share with to illustrate the issue.
Mrs Smith* had used a template she bought from a local store to prepare her will. She wanted a simple division of all her assets between her 3 children on her death, so she didn’t think that is was necessary to have a professionally drafted will.
Under the rules a will must be signed by the maker and witnessed by two persons. After finalizing her draft Mrs Smith asked her two sons to witness her signature, which they did. Unfortunately the rules stipulate that the witnesses of a will must not receive a benefit under the terms of the will. This meant that by witnessing their mother’s signature the sons had effectively disinherited themselves and all of Mrs Smith’s estate would pass to her daughter. The matter was further complicated by the fact that Mrs Smith’s daughter was disabled and that receiving the inheritance would mean her
means tested benefits would stop.
Fortunately the family sought legal help in administering Mrs Smith’s estate and the problems were corrected- but it cost a lot more to remedy the problems than it would have cost Mrs Smith to have a professionally drafted will prepared!
Lakes Legal Limited always recommend that home made wills are reviewed by a professional. Indeed all wills should be reviewed periodically to ensure that they continue to meet your needs. Most solicitors and will writers offer a free will review service so why not check that your will is going to do what you want it to?
Lakes Legal Limited offer a FREE will review programme. There is no obligation and the process couldn’t be simpler, either call the office or e-mail a scanned copy of your will to Hannah@lakeslegallimited.co.uk. * Name changed to protect client confidentiality
Lakes Legal Limited offers a comprehensive Fixed-Fee will writing service so you know exactly how much it is going to cost you from the very beginning; No hidden costs and No VAT! Single Wills £75.00 and Couples Wills £125.00 Lasting Powers of Attorney £150.00 Why not call 01229 47 18 71 now for a one hour fee free consultation. “Lakes Legal Limited; a professional service at an affordable price from the comfort of your own home”

Made in Ulverston
This year at Two by Two Ulverston we have enjoyed the unique experience of introducing a home grown, knitwear brand to our collection and watching it develop. Oubas Knitwear was launched at the end of 2012 by local entrepreneur Kate Wilson who returned to Ulverston after training in Knitwear Design at Winchester School of Art and working as a junior designer for refined British brand Toast. This Autumn Kate is designing a scarf that will be exclusive to Two by Two. In order to work on this project with her I decided to find out more about her and her brand. Rachael: Kate who are your knitting heroes? Kate: Ethical designer Izzy Lane has been a huge inspiration to me. Izzy has a sheep sanctuary in North Yorkshire which holds a flock of 500 rare breed sheep which she has rescued from slaughter. Izzy is a pioneer in providing animal welfare and luxury knitwear simultaneously and producing knitwear that is locally sourced and made. Rachael: What are your style inspirations? Kate: I look to Japanese and Scandinavian culture and design for their simplicity and clean lines. Rachael: When did you start knitting? Kate: I did a little knitting and weaving with my Gran when I was young but essentially I started kitting and learned knitwear techniques at college. I was thrilled to learn to knit with a machine and create instant fabric. Rachael: Do you have a favourite breed of sheep? Kate: Yes! It might seem obvious because it is native to Cumbria and the Lake District but I love the Herdwick sheep for the way it is hefted to the landscape. Each Herdwick lamb inherits its mothers patch and while it will
16
www.thepinfold.com
graze wide areas, maintaining the Lakeland landscape as we know it, it will remain loyal to its place of birth. Rachael: Where do you look for design inspiration? Kate: I feel a more timeless sense of design is found by going back to textures and colours found in the natural landscape, and by looking at the everyday in a different way. The Brant Scarf was inspired by looking at tree cells and their growth. Rachael: What made you want to make the transition from working for a national brand like Toast to a one man band? Kate: I gained invaluable experience working for such an exciting brand but I missed having the freedom to experiment and wanted to answer my own design inspiration. I noticed a shift within the company, since the recession, to design more safely with lower risk and I sensed I would have both the chance to be more creative with my own venture and would be able to be better connected with my customers. Rachael: Did you have any worries about starting your own business during a recession? Kate: Of course and it has taken time for me to build confidence in my brand but I figured it was wise to do it while I was young with little to lose and fewer needs. Rachael: Do you hope to employ anyone in the future? Kate:Yes I would love the brand to develop and the collection to expand. Presently I am lucky to have a 15 year old student volunteer from UVHS who I enjoy teaching finishing techniques and processes. Oubas Knitwear currently has 3 scarves available in numerous colours. The wool is sourced from Scotland or Italy depending on the colour and the scarves are designed and made in Kate’s studio in Ulverston. Kate hopes to develop a cardigan, a jumper and further accessories to the range this autumn and the Two by Two special scarf will be launched on September 27th check www.twobytwoonline.com for further details. 52 Market Street Ulverston LA12 7LS T 01229 480703 For more fashionable frolics follow thefashionfruitcake.co.uk www.facebook.com/thepinfold

PENNINGTON BENEVOLENT FUND & JAMES FELL FOUNDATION You may have heard of or seen in the press the tragic story of Ulverston couple Clare and Paul Coulston, who have both been diagnosed with terminal illnesses. Clare and Paul have two children, Finlay, 7, and Evelyn, 5.
We are a group of parents with children in the same school as the Coulston children, Pennington C of E Primary School. We have felt moved by the tremendously difficult circumstances this family is currently coping with, and have all felt compelled to do something to make a difference. The support Clare and Paul need now and going forward over the next 5 years cannot be underestimated. They need a mobility car (£6000), a wet-room for their home (£5000), an electric wheelchair (£5000) and a voice-activated computer (£3000). The Motor Neuron Disease Association estimates that total equipment costs are £90,000, plus care costs, with the cost to the family during the last 12 months of Paul’s life, estimated to be ca. £200,000. The NHS covers the medical costs, but every penny counts towards significant items for Paul’s independence and comfort, and to make his illness more bearable, and to enable Paul and Clare to make the most of the little time they have left with their children.
Our aim is to raise as much money as possible for Clare and Paul. As a focus for the fundraising efforts of hundreds of local people, we are beginning by organising a sponsored Fun Run through Pennington School, on 29th September 2013, with the target of purchasing an electric wheelchair. This event is known as the Pennington Puddle Dash (look out for lots of publicity).
I am sure you can appreciate the scale of the challenge. We hope you feel you would be able to make a financial contribution, however, small. We would also be most grateful for anything you could do to help us with the day, gift, voucher, raffle prize, auction lot, promise, experience or voluntary support. There is a paypal link on our website, www.penningtonpuddledash.co.uk, where you can make a financial contribution directly from your bank account, or you can donate to our charity via the Just Giving link. Please contact us if you have a specific gift in mind. A list of all sponsors will be prominently displayed at the Run and acknowledged on our website.
We have recently merged with a 200+ year old charity, (the James Fell Foundation), that exists for the benefit of the pupils of Pennington School. Given the ethos of the Benevolent Fund, which you can read about on our website, this is very fitting. Charitable status will make a huge difference to our eligibility for funds and grants, thus helping build the fund and support local families, both now and in the future. National cruise week is this month 2nd-9th September
Well here we are already, the official summer holidays are coming to a close and the children will soon be heading back to school – and what a great summer we have had (at last)! I hope you had fun whatever you got up to and made many happy holiday memories. For me, following an extremely busy July with bookings, I had a well earned rest in North Berwick and what a beautiful corner of the UK I hadn’t previously discovered, I will certainly return. Now traditionally, as the sun has set on many holidays for people this summer, thoughts turn to their next break. I am expecting my enquiries to soar again this month and who knows what that will bring. My biggest advice to you, as always, is that I cannot recommend highly enough that if you want to get away next summer, you will be better off booking early. Financially, you should get the better prices and in terms of choice you have more chance of getting the holiday you want. So what’s coming up?

Or, if you have already been on board and want to grab yourself a great value deal, this is the time. Suzie b …Sew-Shop-Sip
Friday, September 20th will see the grand opening of Barrow’s first sewing café Suzie b, at 81 Dalton Road, owned and operated by Suzanne Bailey of Ulverston.
Suzie b’s will be a space for people of all ages and abilities to come and be creative. Whether an experienced seamstress or beginner there will be opportunities and activities for YOU! 2 hour Make and Take Workshops, 6 week Beginning to Sew course, 6 week Dressmaking course, and individual lessons. For those who prefer to “do their own thing” in a comfortable and friendly environment equipped with space for cutting out, ironing and finishing, hourly machine hire will be available. Or why not bring your own hand sewing or knitting/crochet project and drop in at one of our weekly ‘Sew-cial’ groups. Suzie b is about bringing people together to sew in a social situation. Beginners gain confidence and those with more experience can enjoy sharing their knowledge. Suzanne will also be selling a full range of her own items including bunting, cushions, dolls, bears etc, most of which can be personalized and make unique and special gifts. Her love of vintage has compelled Suzanne to include for sale a selection of some of her fabulous finds.
If you would like more information contact call Suzanne at 07980713185 or email: suziebmadewithlove@gmail.com www.facebook/lovesuzieb Suzie b is sure to be an eclectic mix of treasures-some old some new and some still to be created. But all guaranteed to be great fun!
