Sweet Adelines International is excited to present the 2016 International Young Women in Harmony Festival! This free-of-charge festival is open to female singers 25 or younger, Sweet Adelines membership is not required to attend or participate. The YWIH Festival is an opportunity to meet other singers your age, all with one thing in common: MUSIC! On Saturday, October 15, participants will engage in an exhilarating day of fun and educational rehearsals, filled with music, singing and dancing! Working with Sweet Adelines certified director Patti Thorpe, attendees will be introduced to the elements of singing four-part harmony in the barbershop style. The festival experience will culminate in an exciting chorus performance on the evening of Tuesday, October 18, 2016. The YWIH festival chorus will perform a show package on the Sweet Adelines International stage at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, in front of an audience of more than 3,000 and webcast to thousands of fans across the globe. If you are a middle school, high school or college-age female singer, please join us for the exciting festival. Don’t miss this chance to perform on the international stage!

JOY IN THE JOURNEY “Live your life each day as you would climb a mountain. An occasional glance toward the summit keeps the goal in mind, but many beautiful scenes are to be observed from each new vantage point.”

iking in the mountains is both challenging and inspirational. Having lived in Colorado for 12 years, hiking was more than great fun and good exercise. For me, it was where I went to free my mind and heart. So many things look clearer at 12,000 feet! When you’ve been ascending a steep slope and your breathing is labored in the thin air, sometimes you wonder if you’ll make it all the way up to your goal. But then, you look around — beauty is everywhere. Clear blue skies, majestic mountains, colorful wildflowers and mountain streams change your perspective and inspire you to see what’s around the corner. Once your heart rate has returned to normal and you can breathe again, continuing the climb is actually exciting and fun. Our journeys as Sweet Adelines are much the same. We begin with loads of enthusiasm and energy! We’re excited for new adventures and enjoy the friends along the way. Then at various places along our journey, we start to get tired, discouraged by how far we have to go, and we begin to wonder if we can make it to our goal.

Even when we take a breather to rest, we remain focused on the difficult road ahead and have trouble recharging. Have you ever experienced that? Now that another year of Regional Competitions has come and gone, some of us are flying high from tremendous successes and personal bests! Some of us are still early in our journeys and are living off the high of just being on stage! And some are wondering, where is the path that leads us to greater heights? No matter where you are in your journey, take a few moments to stop and appreciate how far you’ve come and the truly amazing and beautiful experiences and people that surround you. Look up into the smiling faces of your fellow members and remember the laughter and fun you’ve shared. Listen to the stories and the music that you’ve created together. Share a meal or a drink together and “glance toward the summit” of what you want to be, but also take time to be grateful for moments of making beautiful music with friends and harmonizing your world. Looking up gives us all new energy and strength to continue our journey with joy.

My journey as president began May 1, 2016. There are beautiful vistas I am privileged to see — amazing members, strong and dedicated leaders, incredible singing and magical performances — and truly the best and most remarkable women I know! There will also be a few steep mountains and some rocky terrain at times. But we are never alone — we have each other! We have music that opens our hearts and allows us to express ourselves in ways that mere words can’t. Let’s make a pact to remind one another to look up and find the joy in our journeys. Invite others to join your adventure because it is more fun to travel with friends and family. Find joy in your journey and others will want to join you! As the song says, “It’s all about The Climb”! FROM NEW YORK TO NEW ZEALAND, SWEET ADELINES ARE HARMONIZING THE WORLD “Music is the universal language of mankind.”

et me start by saying congratulations to all our regional contest winners and kudos to everyone for your hard work, improving on already-outstanding talent each and every year! With regional competition season behind us, national TV appearances such as ClassRing’s performance on FOX & Friends for National Barbershop Quartet Day, and successful Global Open Houses, what an amazing, action-packed year it’s been so far ... and we are just getting started! From New Zealand to New Orleans, the worldwide barbershop excitement continues, leading up to our return takeover of Las Vegas for the 70th International Convention and Competition. First stop on our tour is a double-header in beautiful Auckland, New Zealand: the 2016 Rising Star Quartet Contest for young women age 25 and under (July 13), followed by A Cappella Harmony Academy 2016 (July 15 – 17). Our stellar AHA faculty — Sharon Babb, Betty Clipman, Paula Davis, Marcia Pinvidic and Sandi Wright, along with

special guest 2016 International Champion Quartet Speed of Sound — will cover topics ranging from foundational elements to creative flourishes. And of course, there will be plenty of ringing chords each day! Our next educational stop is for all you frontline and assistant directors. Join us in New Orleans, La., for the “TLC: Teach, Lead, Care Directors’ Seminar” at the historic Hotel Monteleone, Aug. 18 – 20. World-class faculty and special guest Dr. Jim Henry, will offer instruction for directors of every level — all while taking in the sights, sounds and tastes of Southern hospitality. I know I’m looking forward to it! This leads us to October and what we prepare for year round here at HQ: International Convention and Competition. Whether you’ve already booked your flight to Vegas or plan to watch via webcast, we’ve had all members in mind, working to make every aspect of your experience the easiest, most exciting and most enjoyable it can possibly be, from onsite educational sessions to live streaming the “I am Sweet Adelines” Opening Session

MEET OUR PRESIDENT SKILL, COMMITMENT, AND A WHOLE LOT OF HEART. INTRODUCING OUR NEW PRESIDENT,

PAULA DAVIS.

s a music educator and lifelong singer, Paula Davis always knew the joys of singing and the thrill it brings. That’s why, although teaching music daily, she still longed for an outlet to sing for herself. One fateful trip to the grocery store in 1983 while living in Dallas, Texas, she happened to see a flier — the kind with tear-off phone numbers — tacked to a community bulletin board, inviting women to sing in a new chorus. So she took the phone number and, as it turned out, the journey of a lifetime. As the newly installed International Board President, she recalls where that journey began. “It was a prospective Sweet Adelines chorus that didn’t make it,” Paula says. “That was the fall of 1983, and a few months later, in 1984, five of us joined the Rich-Tones, of which I was a member for 10 years.” It’s no surprise then that one of her fondest Sweet Adelines memories was as a member of Rich-Tone Chorus at the 1987 International Competition in Hawaii. “In the finals, the audience was stomping on the bleachers for us and going crazy. It was so exciting!” she says. “We came in third place, but I could have flown home without the plane. Of course, winning our gold medal in Baltimore in 1992 was very memorable too!” Due to the nature of her husband Bob’s work as an engineer, the Davis family moved many times through the years. Accordingly, Paula’s Sweet Adelines membership did too, taking her from the Rich-Tone Chorus, to Houston Horizon Chorus, to chartering a chorus called SpindleTop Sound, which she directed for three years. Leaving Texas for Colorado, she then sang for 12 years with Velvet Hills Chorus in Colorado Springs. Today, she lives in Tacoma, Wash., where she directs a newly chartered chorus, Song of Seattle, which just competed for

the first time in Open Division of Region #13’s Annual Competition. While saying goodbye to her Sweet Adelines sisters along the way hasn’t always been easy, each chorus provided new friendships, new harmony and new opportunities to serve in different capacities, all while learning from Sweet Adelines legends. “I have been incredibly fortunate and blessed to have some of the mentors that I have had in Sweet Adelines,” Paula says. “Dale Syverson, Betty Clipman and Kathy Carmody as my former directors, Marcia Pinvidic, Peggy Gram and all the board members ... they have all been incredibly influential in their mentoring. As a director, leader or coach, we never know who we are touching; we may be talking with or mentoring the next director or International President. Our influence changes lives — theirs certainly changed mine!” Sweet Adelines International, as well as the many friends and mentors it has given her, has helped Paula realize her possibilities and discover the confidence to step up, try new things and help others as well. “People that knew me early on as a Sweet Adeline in the Rich-Tones saw me as fairly quiet, very willing to do things and try out, but I didn’t have tons of confidence,” she says. “Life can be quite difficult at times and shake our confidence.” “Sweet Adelines provided me a place of acceptance, joy and encouragement in the midst of life. It has given me confidence and a belief that I can do anything I want to do, more than I could ever have imagined. In times of difficulty or challenges, it has helped me walk through those with greater ease and, more than anything, it’s given me strength, confidence and courage. In

times of celebrations and fun, I have so many incredible friends to share it with me!” Because of the countless ways Sweet Adelines has enriched her life, Paula has been honored to give back, serving in many capacities. For eight years, she served on Regional Management Teams — two years as education coordinator in Region #10 and as directors’ coordinator for six years in Region #8. She’s also served on the International Board of Directors (IBOD) as well as the Regional Leadership Committee, the Editorial Review Board and the Regional Governance Task Force. Additionally, she is an International Faculty member, a Certified Expression Judge and has served on the Judge Specialist Committee. “Because of all that Sweet Adelines has done for me, I wanted to give back and have loved serving the organization and its members. Serving and giving back has opened the doors that led me to this position as president,” she says. And it’s in this continued spirit of servant leadership that Paula will lead the organization throughout her tenure as president. “Serving on the IBOD is about service, selfless service to the organization we love and a chance to give back in return for all that we have received throughout the years. Whether someone is a new member in a small chorus or has been a member for 20 years or more, they too could find themselves here if they are willing to serve with no agenda other than preserving and advancing the health and vibrancy of our organization.” Apart from Sweet Adelines, Paula spends as much time as possible with her other passion — family. “Since we both travel a great deal for work, when Bob and I are home, we really like to be ‘at home.’ We just like to work together, eat together and play

together whenever we can,” she says. While their younger son Scott lives in Chicago, son Daniel and his wife Mary live nearby in Seattle, ensuring plenty of play time with their grandsons: 6-year-old Logan, 4-year-old Paul and 2-year-old Calvin. The boys’ imaginations have even provided Paula with practice for her new presidential role. “I just like to play whatever they want to play,” she says. “They have very big imaginations. I end up being a superhero a lot. Logan just finished kindergarten, and he memorized all the presidents. So we pretended we were the Washingtons; he was George, and I was Martha. Next time we were John and Abigail Adams. We are working our way through the presidents. We hosted a dinner for the Washingtons and Jeffersons, and Paul was being a pet T. rex. He showed us another T. rex to kill, so we served T. rex steaks and corn on the cob.” While she will likely reserve the T. rex steaks and corn on the cob for the grandkids, Sweet Adelines the world over can rest assured that International President Paula Davis will remain at their service, ensuring an organization that will continue to enrich their lives through harmony and sisterhood.

y home was always filled with music. With a mom in Sweet Adelines, a dad who is a talented pianist/ organist, and a sister with an amazing voice, there really wasn’t much choice ... not that I would choose differently. I grew up singing in a family quartet, experiencing the love and sisterhood of barbershop choruses, playing music games in the car, and randomly breaking out into song while grocery shopping. My dad would accompany us on the piano, and my family would sing and play, at home and in public. It was a wonderful way to grow up, and I freely admit that I took it completely for granted. I am now reminded on a regular basis, as I watch music heal wounds and shape lives, how truly blessed I was.

JOINING SWEET ADELINES

fter I graduated from college, my mom encouraged me to officially join Sweet Adelines (and by “encourage,” I mean she came to visit me in Nashville and insisted I go with her to visit the local chapters). A few weeks later, I simultaneously joined a chorus and a

quartet, and I’ve never looked back. I’m preaching to the choir when I declare that this organization is ALL about the music; but Sweet Adelines is also so much more. Through Sweet Adelines, I’ve been able to:

Travel and make friends from all over the world and from all walks of life. There are so many wonderful people who I count as friends, and I would have never met them outside of the barbershop world.

•

Become a confident performer and musician. I will say this until I’m blue in the face – Sweet Adelines has, hands down, one of the best vocal educations out there. I’ve learned so much about vocal skills and I’ve also realized that I will never stop wanting to learn more.

SHARING THE LOVE

could go on and on — I know that many of you have the same experiences and love for our organization. That is why two of my passions for Sweet Adelines are to continue promoting excellent vocal and musical education; and to spread the word to as many students, moms, teachers, grandmas, lawyers, artists, great grandmas, engineers, scientists — anyone, really, who is a musician at heart — as we can, so that they too, can experience the metamorphosis that singing, performing, and learning can bring. I am thrilled, honored, and humbled to be able to serve the members of Sweet Adelines on the International Board. I am zealous about our music, our education, and, most of all, our people. I truly can’t wait to see what the future holds for us!

Watch music change other women’s lives. As a director and YWIH coordinator, I am privileged to witness the transformation that happens when women from all walks of life join our organization. Positive change and growth is a way of life for us and I never get tired of seeing it happen.

PVI Roulette MGM CC Sections 103,104,105 This class offers attendees the opportunity to learn private voice instruction (PVI) techniques directly from international faculty members. Three faculty will rotate between three rooms of attendees to demonstrate various methods for PVI. Audience members will be invited to volunteer as the “student” for one of the 25-minute demonstrations.

Building a Unit Sound MGM CC Section 121

In this experiential class, international faculty will create a quartet from the audience and showcase different approaches of establishing a unit sound. If you are an aspiring coach, this is a class you won’t want to miss!

Panel Discussion: Developing a Regional Arranger Education Program MGM CC Section 122

The panelists will discuss their work in arranger education and share ideas to help regions establish their own program. ANN GOOCH SHARES ‘60 YEARS OF WONDERFUL MEMORIES’

t’s hard for Ann Gooch to remember a time that she wasn’t a Sweet Adeline. “I was 23 years old when I first joined Sweet Adelines,” she says. “Next year I will be 80 years old. That's how long Sweet Adelines has been a part of my life. The organization has made me the woman, leader, musician and chorus director that I am. It’s all a result of Sweet Adelines. When I say, ‘I am Sweet Adelines,’ it’s true!” Through 56 years of membership, Ann’s accomplishments and positions within the organization grew and evolved, from directing a small chorus to serving as International Board President. “Years ago, chorus directors were volunteers, but I remember that after our rehearsal, the chorus passed around a small dish so that members could contribute change to support the evening’s work by the director. Sometimes this dish brought me $3 or $4, which made me feel really good!” Ann’s impressive resume includes not only being a past International Board President, but also a Certified Music Judge, International Faculty Emerita, Master Director, and 2001 Harmony Classic AA Champion, along with developing Sweet Adelines’ presence beyond North America. Despite being a Sweet Adelines pioneer, Ann says she was still shocked to receive the phone call informing her she was chosen to receive the 2012 President’s Lifetime Achievement Award from Renée Porzel. “It was a very happy surprise,” she says. “To get a call from Headquarters, I thought, ‘Oh my God, what have I done now?’ I was absolutely speechless. She even had to say, ‘Ann, are you there?’ I was so pleased that it was Renée who had nominated me; she is a very special person in my life.”

n recognition of her lifelong dedication to Sweet Adelines International and the advancement of barbershop education around the world, Ann was honored in 2001 with the creation of the Ann Gooch Award — the inauguration of which is one of her fondest memories. “A special experience was having my husband Jim Kane present the monetary gift and announce the award in my honor from the stage at International Convention,” she says. “It was a moment I will never forget.”

The award continues to be given annually to non-North American members who have contributed significantly to the furtherance of barbershop in the worldwide arena.

LIFE AS A FULL-TIME SWEET ADELINE

lthough Ann retired from her professional career as a teacher at Florida State College at Jacksonville in 2008, she hasn’t slowed down. She says as a full-time Sweet Adeline, she doesn’t have a lot of time for other hobbies beyond some gardening and taking care of her Maine Coon cat, “Gatsby.” And she shows no signs of slowing down any time soon as she’s singing tenor in a newly formed quartet whose name is not yet finalized. Throughout her Sweet Adelines career, Ann has never stopped directing. In fact, she became director upon joining the Greater Orlando Chorus. “Interestingly, I’ve never been a singer in a chorus,” she says. “I was made director the first day.” She maintained directing while serving on the International Board of Directors, and since 1975, she has directed Jacksonville Harmony Chorus, successfully leading its members to four Harmony Classic competitions.

or all she has contributed, Ann feels she has gained just as much in return. “I think of myself as being exceptionally lucky to have found Sweet Adelines at a young age and have had going on 60 years of wonderful memories,” she says. “After all this time, I still love it. As a bonus, I've enjoyed judging and coaching and creating new choruses. Needless to say, I've experienced getting to know many fabulous women who shared this journey with me. Thank you, Sweet Adelines, for always opening doors for me and offering me new challenges to meet. For better or worse, it’s been a wonderful life!”

FOX & FRIENDS CELEBRATES BARBERSHOP QUARTET DAY WITH ClassRing By ClassRing

ur New York trip all started with an urgent text from Michaela to our group message saying she received a call from Sweet Adelines International about an amazing opportunity to represent the organization on FOX & Friends for National Barbershop Quartet Day. We quickly took off work and class, and by Sunday of that same week, we were on planes to New York City! The less than 24-hour trip was an unforgettable experience. We explored Times Square and got to spend time with our friends in Storm Front, the Barbershop Harmony Society representative for National Barbershop Quartet Day. Monday morning came bright and early; well, it wasn’t so bright, but that couldn’t stop our excitement! We were up by 3 a.m. and at the studio by 5:15 a.m. The studio was exceptional and the hosts were so warm and welcoming! After being escorted to our dressing room, a short rehearsal, and our sound check, it was time to go live. We had a wonderful experience singing for everyone in the studio and those of you watching on television.

Another significant moment for us was performing an arrangement with Storm Front at the end of the show. And by 2 p.m. that day, we were all on our way home. We feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to represent Sweet Adelines International and barbershop as a whole on National Barbershop Quartet Day. Thanks to Storm Front, for their kindness and professionalism, and Lauren and Tammy from International Headquarters, for helping to make this trip so special. Lastly, thank you to each of you who wrote on our Facebook page, sent us messages, and tuned in to watch. We definitely feel your support and could not do it without you.

s your 2015 Rising Star Quartet Champions, we feel called to represent our youth in harmony. We have dedicated our reigning year to supporting the youth, which is why we have been fundraising to attend this year’s Rising Star Quartet Contest. Since August of 2015, we have organized a number of fundraisers and with the support from our friends, family and Region #21, we are overjoyed to say that we will be going to New Zealand in July! Over the past year, we have received more help than we could have ever imagined and we are so thankful for all of your love and encouragement. Since we raised more money than we needed to attend the 2016 Rising Star Quartet Contest, we want to share the generosity. C’est La Vie was able to donate $200 to both The Ladies (U.S.) and Timbre (Sweden). We hope that our small gesture will get them a little closer to New Zealand. We are also organizing a dinner with all of the competitors while we are there. We want to make a difference in Sweet Adelines; supporting youth and giving back is just the beginning.

CHRISTCHURCH CITY CHORUS' RETREAT WITH DEKE By Christchurch City Chorus

he New Zealand sunrise is the first in the world to send out the light of a new day, and early-riser Deke Sharon makes the most of his every morning. Deke was in New Zealand and on retreat with Virginia Humphrey-Taylor and the Christchurch City Chorus. He inspired the chorus to tap into emotions, which when released by over one hundred and fifty singers, created a groundswell of musical magic! One of Deke’s true talents is his ability to help you grasp the meaning behind what you’re singing, and bring the notes and words alive for the audience. A true connection with the song is

about believing what you’re singing, and he has a unique way of getting you to understand that, in the midst of vowel placements, breath management, lifting phrase endings, keeping your ribcage up, and the myriad of other things running around a singer’s brain when she’s concentrating! LOWDOWN PITCH PIPE ARTICLE SUBMISSIONS If you are interested in submitting an article for consideration in a future issue of The Pitch Pipe, email communications@sweetadelines.com. The following guidelines are set to ensure quality of printing: • feature articles should be in a Word document, not to exceed 1,000 words; • include a byline with chorus/quartet to which you belong; • all other articles must not exceed 500 words; • Harmony Roundup submissions should be no more than 250 words; • submitted photographs need to be high resolution (300 dpi) in jpg, tiff, png or pdf format and attached to the email; • include a caption (if photograph has fewer than five people pictured, include names from left to right). We receive many submissions each year, and since we publish quarterly, publication space is limited. Due to production time, article content is determined three months or more in advance. If an article is not published immediately, it is kept on file for future issues. It may also be published via social media or in a condensed format in the Harmony Roundup section of The Pitch Pipe. Wollongong is a University town in the heart of the picturesque Illawarra region on the south coast of NSW (Australia), just 80km down the road from Sydney. It was chosen to host this year’s Region #34 Convention. After 10 years at the helm of WHC, Director Jan McCarthy is now handing off the baton. Jan’s legacy is a mid-sized chorus of well-trained and technicallyaware musicians committed to advancing together, to delighting our audiences at every outing and to competing with success. Credits so far include everything from 5th to 2nd place at Regional Competition, as well as wins at Eisteddfod and local choir competitions. We are now seeking a dynamic director to take us to the next level. We envisage this person will be a musical leader with a strong barbershop background and a passion to match.
