No. Seriously. Put on your dancing shoes and leave the flip flops and sandals at home. Mistletoe Ball organizers will have a dance floor ready for heels as pointy as stilettos that will be completing the unusually elegant wear that will be dazzling the evening at the Tipsy Tuna Seaside and Sports Bar on Saturday, Dec.15. Sartorial intrigue for our yearly casual beach folk aside, the Placencia Chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association (PBTIA) has been preparing long ahead for their most glamorous fundraiser of the year that is expected to cater to 300 guests for dinner alone!

It's never an easy feat executing a seamless feeding operation for a party organized by the small PBTIA staff along with volunteers, but organizers are feeling confident that they've got all their reindeer in a row this year. So what's for dinner? Expect Belizean Kriol Krismus tradition at its best prepared by the home kitchen pros of Placencia Village. Myrtle Faux will be cooking "Turkey with all the fixins'" and Merlene Bernard of Merl's Cafe will be offering her scrumptious pastries for dessert. Yum. (Two cash bars will be available.) With the support of Tipsy Tuna owners and PBTIA board members, Gillian and Salva Zabaneh, who just secured the chairman position

at the organization's Nov. 20 elections, Tipsy's staff will be on duty at the buffet station and serving tables. Traveling down for the gala from Orange Walk Town in northern Belize is Shugah City Band. Dance to local favorites including calypso, soca, soul, funk, Kriol brukdown, punta and disco! And when the band takes a break, Placencia's sweet-natured DJ Boneyfide will keep the party vibes flowing throughout the evening until 4 a.m.! Surprises and prizes await! Be sure to participate in the Ball's grand raffle for an opportunity to win lavish gifts covering the gamut of the finest the Belize tourism industry has to offer. At just BZ$2 a raffle ticket, there's no excuse to miss your chance at winning! See raffle prize list on page 28.▪

Belize Ocean Club Under New Management Chef Devon Marage continues to cater to a multitude of tastes and occasions. “The uniqueness of BOC will be explored more and new concepts at the restaurants will be announced. Watch this space!” The Belize Ocean Club is one of the few resorts on the Placencia Peninsula where it is possible to enjoy drinks or lunch at the beach bar followed by having sundowners on the lagoon-side deck while watching the sun disappear behind the Maya Mountains. Van Eerde says this is a unique aspect of the resort that STEM® is committed to make better known in the travel market. BOC owners have appointed Miami-based management company STEM® to lead the peninsula beach and lagoon-side resort forward.

STEM® has been appointed as the new management company of Belize Ocean Club, Resort and Adventures, located in Maya Beach on the Placencia Peninsula. Based in Miami, Florida in the United States of America, STEM® specializes in “true Boutique” hotels, focusing on independent, luxury hotels aiming to get a foothold in Central America.

According to the STEM® CEO, Michael Ryan, a task force manager, has been overseeing the rapid transition, as efforts are underway to employ a permanent general manager and food and beverage manager to lead the resort to new heights. Originally from The Netherlands, Van Eerde says he has worked with his company STEM® all over the world in many prestigious properties for “private owners, rock stars and governments.” Joined by Julie Kee of Belize City who now splits her time between the Plaencia Peninsula and the country’s business center to cover all local sales and marketing needs, van Eerde says STEM® is now focusing on a niche boutique hotel market in the Caribbean and Central America.

Robert van Eerde, CEO and founder of STEM®, says he has new plans for Belize Ocean Club with the aim to embrace local culture while focusing on personalized customer service and introducing new concepts to the food and beverage areas as the highest priorities. Van Eerde says he has been on site in Maya Beach since Oct. 19, but STEM® was appointed earlier this year by the owners of the Belize Ocean Club, who were represented by an executive committee. In the mean time, van Eerde says

omeone I know posted recently on social media asking what would be the best gift to bring on a trip to the USA. Of course my answer was food. And December being the month of presents in a country that celebrates Christmas for weeks, there are plenty of opportunities to give. I’m not a big fan of gifts that take up space and require dusting, but who will say no to delicious food and drink?

Let’s start our holiday run down with two Belizean Christmas classics, black fruit cake (aka black cake) and rum popo (a heavily rum laced egg nog). Both of these treats are typically produced in home kitchens although you can find Traveller Distillery’s commercial version of rum popo in the liquor section of most grocery stores. Therefore in order to get a hold of the best black cake and rum popo, I recommend joining and posting on the Placencia Facebook pages, Placencia What’s Happening or Placencia Restaurants and Food. In keeping with 21st century entrepreneurship, a lot of great seasonal homemade food is bought and sold via Facebook in Belize. You will see people advertising their rum popo and black cake, and you can ask who has it for sale.

qualifies as a liquid so be sure to check your bag before your precious cargo is confiscated! If you are looking for stocking stuffers, another wonderful Placencia product is guava jelly or jam, made from yardgrown guavas, hand-picked and cooked to perfection on a home stove. Again, ask around to find the best in the village. Ms. Cunchie and Ms. Grace are two of Placencia’s great jelly makers, as well as Ms. Terese at Omar’s Creole Grub. There are many other jams, marmalades and syrups made from Belizean fruits available at Belizean Flavours shop on Placencia’s main street.

It’s recommended to put your order in right away before everything is sold out as every household will be consuming these holiday staples in

Cacao and chocolate. Chocolate is a classic holiday treat and Belize is known to have some of the highest quality cacao beans in the world. Fine dark chocolate is always a great choice, or consider cacao nibs and cacao powder for baking, drinking and throwing in smoothies, granola, oats and everything else. Soak overnight in cold water or simmer on the stove in water until the dried seaweed dissolves, then use the gel to add incredible amounts of potassium, calcium and magnesium to your smoothies, oats, soups, pancakes and muffins, anywhere you want a superfood boost. Along with the seaweed there are other Belizean foods that you can add to your morning smoothie, to soups, or use to make a healthy tea. Moringa is a superfood shrub from the Himalayas that grows splendidly in the sandy soils of Placencia. It is full of B vitamins and protein and is supposed to help with diabetes. Or if you don’t mind checking that suitcase, try some local wines. We recommend Swirly Head Winery’s dry, semi-sweet and sparkling sorrel wines, available at Mings Grocery store. Stop by Perez fruit and vegetable stand for Dave’s Mango and Cashew wine, sweet dessert wines that are best sipped in small quantities or turned into a refreshing spritzer with the addition of soda water. Now, you say, this is all nice but what about the fish? My friends are missing out on that amazing Belizean seafood. All I can say is take a selfie with that lobster tail and tell them to plan their trip soon! ▪

ike many others with high expectations for the celebration of "auld lang syne", I reckon, I've suffered a number of underwhelming New Year's Eves in my adult years. Only a handful have been truly memorable, phantasmogorical even − the greater of my finger count spent right here at home in beautiful Placencia Village. They're right on par with VIP at Harrah's in New Orleans and bouncing around Bourbon and Decatur Streets. If you recently celebrated your first Halloween at Barefoot and Tipsy Tuna, that should give you some semblance of the insanely fun levels to which our two popular beach bars take the end-of-the-year blowout. Here's how to NYE in Placencia: 1. Choose to be stylish ... or not. If you don't feel comfortable with what you've packed in your suitcase or what's in your closet, visit boutiques like Anna's Fashion, Strike a Pose and The Dealer or opt for treasure hunting at Roselia's Thrift Shop. Fashionistas can accessorize with some kitschy imported costume bling or go local and don some bonafide conch shell, rainforest seeds or sea pearl jewels. This is really for YOU (or your social media followers, millenials) because honestly, in Placencia, few people care about what or worse, "WHO" anyone else is wearing even though the women love to dress to the nines on New Year's Eve! You can't blame us. We only have a few chances to shimmer during the year, and oddly enough, this glitz harmoniously joins the most crassly dressed on the dance floor. I've seen young sport fishermen having the time of their lives while wearing shorts, sandals and windbreakers. The reality is, you just have to let your spirit shine and smile big! That goes a long way in Placencia! 2. Make a dinner reservation at least a day ahead. This is key because our restaurants will be busy, to put it lightly. Fortunately, you've got plenty choices

3. Pre-game: No need to go straight to the big parties after dinner. Enjoy local favorites like rum popo, blackberry wine, beers, fruity rum cocktails (or select non-alcoholic beverages) at other bars and eateries on the Peninsula. Chances are you might have so much fun at your resort or roadside hangout that you find little desire to hit the beach revelries, and that's okay! A crowd isn't everyone's cup of tea. Some places throw lively yet more relaxed NYE events complete with all the festive accouterments. As soon as we learn of their plans, we'll be posting on our Breeze Facebook page. 4. Watch fireworks at the pier. Placencia Village is so small that you're bound to catch a glimpse of the midnight fireworks no matter where you are; however, this is a great opportunity to immerse yourself into the village life culture. Join children and families at the Placencia Municipal Pier where the village council will have set up a fundraising bar, and food vendors will be selling home cooked meals at their stalls for a relative bargain. 5. Bring earplugs. If you value your sleep, you may want to have some earplugs handy, and it's not necessarily because of the thumping music at the parties, but the kids will be popping firecrackers incessantly − day and night. This torture for some goes on for weeks climaxing on New Year's Eve and tailing off during the following weeks while their supplies last. (Note: These firecrackers are illegally procured by sellers in Belize, but the police tolerates them during festive times of the year.) 6. Party. Party hard! I've had an equally fun time for NYE at Barefoot Bar and Tipsy Tuna Seaside and Sports Bar while being completely sober and also while at the very end of the other side of the spectrum that I must rely on photos the next day to piece together the wonderful memories. If high energy dancing appeals to you on New Year's Eve, Belize's top DJs booked just for this occasion alone, will make it really hard to resist the party vibes. So go out there and do NYE, PLACENCIA STYLE! ▪

Third Lionfish Roundup Eleven Complete Coral Bleaching Training Brings in a 243 Count By MONIQUE VERNON

By MONIQUE VERNON

On Oct. 26, two full boats of enthusiastic divers set out for their third lionfish roundup this year. Several hours after take off, the two boats arrived boasting a total catch of 243. This provided almost 20 pounds of lionfish that were sold with profits put away for near future culling. Fragments of Hope (FoH) thanks Harry Neal for organizing the event, Hatchet Caye & Wild Orchid Resort for sponsoring and to all participants who contributed to the successful third lionfish roundup of 2018! Since the

first roundup in June, this program has eradicated 673 lionfish from our vulnerable reefs at a total cost of just over BZ$10K for the three events. This translates to BZ$15 per lionfish caught. Boats were donated and tanks were discounted courtesy of Seahorse Dive Shop! Participants were well fed and hydrated, and received a small stipend for their efforts. If you have ideas on how to lower the costs or want to contribute to future lionfish round ups, please contact Harry Neal at 635-9262 and/or Monique Vernon at 654-8951.▪

Eleven more people are now ready for bleaching survey collection thanks to a two-day Fragments of Hope (FoH) workshop held in late October. The successful bleaching and disease workshop covered a theoretical overview of coral species including their biology and ecology and introduced the swim bar methodology for monitoring corals. It concluded on Oct. 28 with a practical session.

Most of the staff has been with MnM's for over a decade, and they’ve been training with independent leadership coach, Mandy Marshall of Mandy Marshall Coaching in Maya Beach, twice a week to take their customer engagement to the next level in preparation for this re-opening.

Nov. 24th brought with it the grand re-opening of the hardware section of MnM Hardware & Service Station on the main road in Placencia Village. First opened on Sept. 1, 2003 as a sister store to the original in Independence Village, owners, Dora and Alan Duncker, are keeping up with the needs of a growing Placencia Peninsula over 15 years later.

Home hardware is still the Duncker’s core business, but they saw a need for good quality building and home improvement products that people have been needing to procure in Belize City. Eager to meet Placencia’s needs, MnM will still carry all the nuts and bolts they always have, but now shoppers will benefit from an upgraded caliber and an expanded portfolio of accessories including Balloons and fanfare marked the home decor, kitchen appliances and opening, as Peninsula residents were a hotel and restaurant line of goods. treated to a table of snacks, packaged homemade cookies and beautifully From finding the perfect color of displayed merchandise laid out by Sissons paint mixed to the right talented locally-based design con- biodegradable disposables, browse sultant, Penne Sommers. Raised for Humane Society at Mad Hatter's Tea Party & Auction By PATRICIA CELENZA Press Officer The Placencia Humane Society

placibr@btl.net

On Nov. 10, Turtle Inn hosted an overflowing and enthusiastic crowd of Placencia Humane Society's (PHS) most dedicated supporters! This extravagant event raised an unbelievable US$ 10,000 for our non-profit organization! This wouldn't have been possible without the attendance of all registered participants, individuals and businesses who donated items for both the live and silent auction and the volunteers who worked quietly and tirelessly behind the scenes to execute this event. But right now, cherish the vibrant photos captured by Kevin W. Quischan and Sarah Aly, who volunteered their sensitive eyes to PHS.

If you missed this historic event, but would still like to make a donation, please click on the DONATE button on our Facebook page, or the PAYPAL button on our website: placenciahumanesociety.org. And with that, we continue our work! Saturday, Dec. 15 is our next PHS monthly vet clinic. Bring your pets to the PHS building, located along the Placencia Lagoon, opposite Los Porticos Villas.

From noon to 2 p.m., open clinic will be available for all non-surgery treatments, such as exams and shots. Please call 604-8676 to schedule the necessary morning appointments for spays/neuters and surgeries. Belize and US dollars and checks are gratefully accepted as payment for your pet's vet bill. All PHS board members and volunteers receive no financial reimbursement for any of their time or services. The vet, however, does charge.â–Ş

Not Just the Crocs By MARISA TELLEZ Co-founder & Executive Director Crocodile Research Coalition marisa.tellez@crcbelize.org

T

he Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC) loves their crocs, we really do! BUT, when we talk the biz of conservation, we take a more panoramic approach in our research because conservation of crocodiles is not JUST about the focal species, but also identifying and studying the other wildlife, in addition to understanding the various ecological interactions within the environment. For example, what is the biodiversity of the crocodile’s closest living relative in the Placencia Lagoon, and how is the changing over time in response to human development and climate change? (So right now you are probably asking, “What animal is the crocodile’s closest living relative? Ready? ... BIRDS! Yup. Expert scientists have done thorough research that includes genetics, physiology, and morphology (just to name a few) and have concluded crocodilians and birds descended from a common ancestor from the Archosaur lineage. In fact, many of us crocodilian experts no longer call crocodilians “reptiles” anymore because they really are not. Within the next 1015 years, science books will no longer put crocodilians in Class Reptilia, but in a new taxonomic class with birds! (There is your fun fact for the day!) In January 2016, the CRC began weekly biodiversity surveys of the Placencia Lagoon, monitoring the avian and aquatic wildlife among various locations, in addition to monitoring parasites of snails. Parasites. Why parasites? Parasites are a fabulous biological indicator of the biodiversity within the environment, as well as being a red flag when there is a disturbance in "The Force," the energy flow or health within the environment that would otherwise

Identifying and studying other wildlife is an important part of CRC's research, which has revealed a greater understanding of Placencia's biodiversity.

not be detected by other traditional scientific methods and this is all due to parasites’ extreme interaction with wildlife hosts and the environment. So what are some key observations we have made? ● We conduct biodiversity surveys in seven different locations throughout the lagoon. Thus far we have observed 70 different species (from Bat Falcons to Osprey to Anhingas to Blue Herons to Yellow Warblers to Tropical Mockingbirds) throughout the lagoon, and we see a gradient from lower biodiversity to higher biodiversity as we go from the south to the north (which makes sense as there is more intact habitat as you go further north along the peninsula). ● With the assistance of our Next Gen Croc Placencia student Erica Holding, we recorded the first Altamira Oriole sighted in this area, observed in Maya Beach! ● Manatees seem to like to hang out more often in the northern part of the lagoon, from Coco Plum area to Plantation, so IF YOU OWN A BOAT, BE MORE VIGILANT ABOUT GOING SLOW See NOT JUST CROCS on page 24

Brice is Back! But not really ... to help transform lives through yoga in Belize, she was accepted. By SHAYLENE TODD Contributing Writer The Placencia Breeze

W

hen the student is ready, the teacher will appear. This was certainly the case for local Barefoot Beach Bar owner, Brice Dial. After first trying yoga in 2005 to help relieve and manage stress, Brice received her instructor certification through Om Shanti Belize in 2016. Since then, she felt she had been waiting for the opportunity to take her practice to the next level. When she heard about a scholarship sponsored by the Indian Government to attend an intensive trainers course in India, she knew she had to apply. In agreement with Belize-City based Rhythm of Change (ROC), a non-profit yoga and wellness center, that she would offer two hours of yoga per week to her community upon returning and a stated desire

Accompanied by fellow Belizean honoree, Vianey Blades, a 23-year-old physical therapist, Brice embarked on 36 hours of travel, 23 hours of flying through London to Bangalore and an hourlong drive one hour south to Bengaluru. Once at S-VYASA University, (Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana), Brice and Vianey joined their group of 30 other participants from 18 different countries, Mozambique to Columbia, Ecuador, Serbia and Hungary to name a few. The goal of S-VYASA is to combine yoga and spirituality with modern scientific research to bring health, harmony and

Put that on repeat for 30 days and combine it with a Sattvic diet, which includes food and eating habits that are pure, essential, natural, vital, energy giving, clean and wise, and maybe you’ll experience the same life changing clarity with which Brice came home. That is, if you believe she’s back. Her sister Cassie, who, when asked how it was to have Brice home, responded with a smile, “Brice isn’t back yet.” Not needing to rely on alcohol or drugs, Brice admits she’s been on a high since returning home, having maintained her daily practice and healthy diet. She’ll tell you she’s never felt better. Her staff, on the other hand, will tell you she’s “annoyingly happy”. You are all invited to join in the remembrance of those who have left us.

IN THIS AREA!) ● Dolphins are sighted more often between Coco Plum and Belize Ocean Club. What’s attracting the dolphins to this area? We still need to gather more data in our aquatic surveys to determine if there is a higher fish population in this area relative to other locations throughout the lagoon. ● We recorded six crocodile nests in the area, five successfully hatching. Is the crocodile population finally showing recovery from almost being hunted to extinction in the early 1900s? It’s a slow recovery, but you can help us in determining the population by becoming a CRC Citizen Science (Contact us for more information). And don’t forget, DON’T FEED, DON’T HARASS AND DON’T HANDLE the crocs! It’s illegal, and this law ensures they don’t lose their fear of humans. It’s when they become TOO friendly when human-conflict arises. ● Coco Plum area shines again in that all snails collected in this area had a 100% prevalence (which means this area is providing good habitat for the three wildlife hosts parasites use in their life cycle: snails, fish and birds). However, we are noticing a decrease in parasite prevalence from Maya Beach up towards Plantation. Why is that even though we are recording a good number of bird species? That means something in the environment is affecting the parasite’s free-living stage prior to infecting the snail. We can not be conclusive, but it is likely the increase in development and especially dredging in this area is impacting the parasite (and likely other aquatic wildlife) survival.

that depends on the Placencia Lagoon; whether we realize it or not, many of us depend on the Placencia Lagoon indirectly and directly, and our actions will affect us. ●The epidemic mortality of birds that pursued for two years seems to have come to an end. The CRC collaborated with two avian experts from the United States, and we found out the culprit was an accumulation of biotoxins as a result of algal blooms. CRC is in touch with Florida Fish and Wildife Biotoxin Lab to initiate more of an immediate response if another algal bloom happens again. For now, CRC can use your help! If you notice any ill birds, please contact us so we can take the initial steps for treatment with partners like the Belize Bird Rescue, as well as collecting samples to identify the culprit.

I just gleamed over some of the many observations the CRC recorded over the last few years of our biodiversity survey and monitoring of the Placencia Lagoon. With the support of the Belize Forest Department, this survey is just in its infancy of being a long-term monitoring project of the Placencia Lagoon and it has no ending date. This coming year we will be expanding, conducting terrestrial surveys in a few of the locations. All of this information is to provide local and national key stakeholders the information needed to apply the most appropriate management and conservation plan to ensure the Placencia Lagoon continues to thrive in wildlife. Every time we go out on surveys, the CRC experiences something new, a little hidden treasure of the Placencia Lagoon. As one of the last strongholds of habitat left for various endangered wildlife in Belize, the Placencia Lagoon is definitely a treasure that we should Okay. here is another scientific fact work together to protect. that you can share during your holiday dinner: Mangroves are nature’s The CRC would like to thank Turtle filters when it comes to heavy met- Inn and Projects Abroad for their als, “soaking” up the heavy metals in continuous volunteer support of this the water thus keeping the environ- project. Bicycle Reflector Program: Spearheaded by Nabil Bedewi from Believe in Belize and working with the Rotary Club of Placencia and the Placencia Police Department, a project was started to put reflectors and reflective tape on bicycles. This is a pilot project for installing 20 bicycle reflectors on bicycles in Placencia, Belize during the second half of October 2018. It is part of the Believe in Belize Health Program / Bicycle Safety Initiative. The purpose is to get a better handle on the issues involved. Afterwards, we will decide how to best proceed with this project. We are thankful to Jeff Stefanis and Amber Wason, the co-founders of Riide for donating the reflectors.

in Placencia Village; therefore, we concluded two things: 1) Officer Pop will install reflector tape (donated by the Rotary Club of Placencia) on a couple of bicycles as an experiment to explore the effects of weather on them. 2) Believe in Belize will launch an information service to make people aware of the tremendous need for bicycle safety reflectors in Belize and how we can all help. We want to thank Placencia Police Inspector Ramclam for enthusiastically supporting our effort and assigning Officers Pop and Lammey to make this project successful.
