Cruising With Critter Hey I made it! I’ve done my years probate period and the votes are coming in and I’m now ready to consider myself worthy to carry on as a full-fledged, card carrying, patch wearing, cer fied (cer fiable), illuminated, enlightened and inspired Riders Mag Guy! Being the end of one even ul and unforge able year and at the cusp of a new one I will take me to reflect on 2013. I got a full year in with me at the helm of The Riders Mag and we are s ll afloat! I may have scuffed her hull a bit at first and made a few naviga onal errors along the way and I s ll have lots to learn, but damn it, with much help from my friends we have arrived none the worse for wear our flag is s ll flying and we are ready to set off on next year’s adventure. “Full speed ahead and damn the torpedoes!” “Make it so!” “Cast off!” “Third star to the le and straight on ‘ l morning!” “Ye ever been to sea Billy?” and all those other inspira onal things that Captains say to their crew and anyone else who will listen before they set sail on another adventure when what they are really thinking is; “So far so good!”. A fine crew it is too! We s ll have Captain Emeritus JR s ll doing his feature stuff, covering select events and doing some adver sing sales along with 1st mate and Editor in Chief Emeritus JB, who adds style and good looks and to make sures JR does it right and we have got Beau looking out for us in the O awa area and points in the Eastern Ontario region and into Quebec, Tim and Guardrail are riding the Southwest part of the Province, Dani, Sherri O’Irish, Jonathan, Manon, Rossaire, “Burlington Bad Bob” and Durham’s Deligh ul but Delinquent, “Dangerous Don” and Scary Larry and the irrepressible Al Kasza who seem to be willing to go anywhere and Magic Mike MacDonald who has come on board to show me what cartooning is really all about! They are what makes The Riders Mag! Then there is Alex Senior! He is inspira onal to me and was one of the real draws that hooked me into further involvement with the Mag that just kept escala ng. I see now that he was part of Jr.’s master plan for me to take this thing over (He is a cunning individual that JR. and I fell for “The set him up with the friendly old man and we’ve got him hooked ploy!”) he was Jr’s secret weapon to drag me in further and further into this thing called the Riders Mag un l there was no escape! All joking aside, working with Sr. at the Shows and events over the years has been a pleasure and an experience that will last a life me! We became the advance guard or early crew at events and shows, showing up early and ge ng it done un l the others would join in later in the day. His love for the Mag and his enthusiasm was contagious and I found myself taking on more and more un l I caught the bug and he was largely responsible. In that me we have also become friends and that is worth more than I can imagine! He has also claimed a large area as his delivery route and takes those deliveries very seriously, but I have others to thank who make my life a whole lot easier as well but work behind the scenes, guys like Jeff Burgess, Larry Sherk, Greg Duggan and his wife Jean, and now a friend of perhaps 50 years or maybe more; Paul Scheerle has come on board and all have helped by doing deliveries. Thanks to all of you wonderful adver sers who make this all possible and our fantas c readers for s cking with me through my maiden voyage and for your kind words and encouragement along the way. There was no one more skep cal or unsure of my ability to make this happen than me and there were mes when I felt that this may have been the worst mistake that I’d made
in my en re life but I got through it thanks mostly to the capability, knowledge and pa ence of my friend and managing editor Al who got me over the many bumps and hurdles and is largely responsible for making the Mag look as good as it does and the reason that my sanity is s ll basically intact. He has shown that he can work well with our adver sers and in crea ng ads and solving problems and was instrumental in the crea on of our new website. I also have to thank my wife Godzilla for her help in bookkeeping and support and then Captain and Morgan the Wonderdogs who look a er office security, are my constant companions and have a calming effect when it gets stressful. The new Builder/Shop of the Month feature has been well received and has s rred much interest out there as well. Now if you’ve been reading this column or talking to me you will know that I had wanted to build a trike and had fully intended to have it built for next year. Well I have veered off a bit several mes from the original course that was set with my buddy Bronson, when we first started talking about this project many years ago, which was doing a ground up build using a ‘93 to ‘95 decker as a base for the project. Then I changed my mind and was going to use an ’86 decker, then a couple of other twists happened and I was searching for something else but we were going to use a 96 cu inch Shovelhead Motor and incorporate a bunch of other stuff but we were certain that we would definitely be using one of the fantas c rear ends from JD Cycle but then certain things changed and it appeared that I would have to put all those
THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 7
Cruising With Critter plans on hold. I was disappointed as was Bronson but shit happens. I went to JD Cycles just to buy the rear end so that when I was ready and able to go on with the build at least that would be ready and wai ng. I when I explained the situaon to Josh who knew how much I wanted to get this thing done, to my complete surprise made some sugges ons and we were able to come to an agreement and I drove home the proud owner of one of his recent builds that will fill my needs and has one of the Mystery Independent Rear Ends in it. It will s ll require some special modifica ons to fit my specific requirements which I hope to have done in me for the upcoming shows and it will become an intricate part of our booth and The Riders Mag as a whole. It will be unique and I am very excited about it! The other build will s ll happen but not right now, for now “Black Bitch 3” is about to be! Well the Show season is almost upon us and I’m gearing up for The Interna onal Supershow at the Interna onal Centre in Mississauga January 3,4, and 5 and hope to see all of you out, so drop by and see us at our booth in Hall 5 and say hi. I’m due for my new knee in late Feb. and we’ll see how that goes. Another adventure! I’ve been keeping busy over the Fall and try to get out as much as possible but there is a lot of ground to cover and as hard as I try I just can’t make it to everything I’d like to. I missed the ACES AND EIGHTS ANNIVERSARY PARTY as I just couldn’t get it done. I heard it was really well a ended and a CLASS A event so typical of those guys and their supporters! I asked my friend Jaye to get some pictures and she
THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 8
sent me in some great shots of the fantas c cake and the ice sculpture. Congrats Guys! Happy Anniversary! The Colonel from the RCR was kind enough to invite me out to their annual Christmas Party out in Guelph again this year and unfortunately, once again, I wasn’t able to pull it off as the workload of pu ng the Mag together that same weekend and the travelling me that would have been involved made it impossible. I will try to get there one of these days. They are a good bunch and I’m sure that I missed a great party! Merry Christmas to you all!
Toronto AOA – Benefit Party in support of a Brother in need.
I did make it out to The Toronto Outlaws CH for a short visit. It was a benefit for my long- me friend Vinnie who has been having some health issues lately and I had to drop in to contribute and to see how he was doing. The place was busy when I arrived and they were just setng up for the party and I tracked down Vinnie and the ever amazing Kim as they scurried around prepping for the party. Vinnie was looking great which surprised me a er hearing the reports of his condi on and the psa counts that had been through the roof. How-
Cruising With Critter ever he has been responding well to the treatments thus far and with the diet supplements that he was taking and Kim’s efforts to get as much weight on his body to help him once the radiaon treatments began and help him to be er weather the storm but he also has a great spirit and a tude and that goes a long way in the ba le against that insidious disease. With the love and support of a good woman and from his Club Brothers and friends that was evident that night and what I know of Vinnie’s strength and resolve he should have this thing beat! No contest. I wandered around to get some pictures and talk to a lot of people that I don’t get to see enough of these days while they laid out an amazing buffet that had my mouth watering and when we got to dig in it tasted as good as it smelled and looked. Once again, I could only stay a short me as I had layout to do and an early morning commitment so I made my way through to say my goodbyes and once again wish Vinnie and Kim all the best in their ongoing ba le and in the rough patches that would s ll lie ahead.
The Peterborough Motorcycle Swap Meet
It was a wet cruddy kind of morning and it had poten al to remain that way or get worse throughout the course of the day. I headed over to pick up my buddy Dangerous Doug who had agreed to come along and the two of us drove across the rain soaked roads to Peterborough for the 1st Annual Fall Swap meet. I was looking forward to a ending as this area of the Province needs something like this and could really benefit the local Biker community. We rolled up to The Morrow Building which is a great choice to serve as a venue for this event as it is large with plenty of free parking easily accessible from major transporta on routes.

Inside, the place was abuzz with ac vity as vendors were s ll se ng up their booths and I managed to track down Lenny the organizer of the Swap meet and talk awhile. While certainly a li le disappointed that they didn’t get more vendors out who had said that they were coming but were now “no shows” and a ributed it to the absolutely crappy weather that many areas of the Province had been blessed today that might well have influenced last minute decisions on whether to come or not, but was sa sfied with the fact that they got the first one done and had thereby established themselves as serious par cipants in the “Bike show/ Swap meet” arena. He knows that unl you actually get the first one done….you are just talk! It is a lot of work organizing something like this and you have to prove that you can do it and there is no doubt in my mind that they can make it happen and that this will become a mainstay event and booth space will be a much sought a er commodity at future shows as word gets out and they have the luxury of more me to promote it. I wandered through, running into many friends and even a couple of our contributors/ friends like Scary Larry and Pastor Dave Neals both of whom had set up booths at the Show along the way. Many of our adver sers were there as well like Fred Hale

Paradice Riders Christmas Party
Being layout weekend the day a er Friday the 13th in Port Dover and knowing the workload that was hovering over our heads like the sword of Damocles this is a party that I may not have go en to and si ng here now hur ng slightly and working like mad, perhaps shouldn’t have a ended but when Puss from the Brothers of the Blade told me that they were all going down and had hired a bus and there was room for me...…welll!!!! So I sit here now typing madly, downloading pictures and trying to make up me so that we can get this baby delivered to the printer, I have to think……Fuck it! It was a great me and I’m glad I went! I will pay the price today but it was worth it! The weather was beyond shi y! Bi er cold, windy and snowing to beat the band and weather forecasts that were foreboding to say the absolute least! Not a pre y night at all. In fact if I was to have to drive myself I may have come to the conclusion that the workload was far too great for me to take me out for a party and spent the evening in front of my computer. But the Blades had a bus and I’d already told Bronson that I was coming and this party was important to The Paradice Riders MC as they have been without a CH since Summer and were anxious to once again host a party and damn it I wanted to be there so I cleaned up and headed out into the Winter Wonderland for a night of fes vity. I had expected to be heading down there in a school bus but should have known that the boys from the BOTB are a far classier Club than that and I rolled into their property to see a full sized Coach from Trevi Limousine and Coach Service sitng idling in the driveway. Wow! I went into the clubhouse to find a whole crowd of friends already in full party mode and ready for the night ahead. A er a drink we headed out to board the Magic Bus and got another great surprise. This was a fully decked out party bus and designed for comfort and fun. Fantas c sea ng, Classy ligh ng, hardwood floors, great sound
Cruising With Critter system, a washroom and a bar! ............Wow!!! This was going to be a good ride down. Sing it Dino! “Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!” Slowly down the driveway James! It was one of the most relaxing trips that I have ever taken down to the city and it seemed to take no me at all and we were ge ng out in front of the Legion for more partying and lots more fun! The Coach rode like a dream and everybody was thrilled with the whole thing! Great idea for future stuff! The large hall was filling up fast and there were lots of familiar faces there, all with huge smiles and the night had just begun. As is usual at a Paradice Riders MC party there was plenty of great food and there was a constant crowd of hungry a endees milling around the enormous buffet all evening. There was a heavy run on the bar which may have been a tad small for this thirsty bunch but the bartenders were obviously well experienced and never seemed to panic and handled everything like it was just another day at the office and all was well. My request for a 50 was met with not the usual “Are you kidding?” And other such sarcas c talk that when translated amounted to “We don’t have that shit what else do you want
to drink old guy?” but instead a courteous and friendly; “We have some downstairs I’ll run down and get some for you.” I smiled and said something like “I Love you, you sweet talker” then thankfully and respec ully moved back to the back of the line to await its arrival. Aw, good food, good beer, good friends, what could make this evening even better? Good music! The Dice had that well in hand too! My buddy Fogger from Zed head took the stage. Fantas c! Hold on! Who’s that guy with the bent up straw cowboy hat strapping on a guitar? That’s not Neil Chapman? Wow it is too! To quote the guy in the radio spots for a Casino; “This is going to be good!” Good it was! Actually good doesn’t even begin to cover it! It was fantas c! There was great a endance from many clubs as well and I was surprised but not shocked to see a large con ngency of The Red Devils roll in from Hamilton which from all accounts was being hammered far worse than we were by this snow storm, but these guys are tough, resilient and
THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 11

resourceful and it will take more than a major fucking snow storm to keep them from a good party and to show their respect for a great Motorcycle Club. The evening flew by with so many good people to see and talk to and it was me to board the Party bus for the ride back. It was a fantasc me and well worth the pain I’m feeling as I write this. Thanks to all! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

miserable, Friday 13th as I went out to my garage and walked up to Petoonia as she sat quite comfortable and happy in the warmth and pa ed her lovingly on the tank and ran my hand slowly down to her plush seat and gave her an affec onate pat and she shuddered slightly at my touch then I said “See ‘ya later Darl’n I’m taking the Black Bitch 2 and heading to Port Dover.” She didn’t even flinch as I made my way outside to sweep the snow off my new F150 and loaded my camera and other essen als for the trip. I first headed out to Burlington to pick up Burlington Bad Bob who has become a regular sidekick for both myself and senior and is turning into a real asset for us and is now covering events too. We made decent me ge ng to Dover and headed right to the Dairy for Breakfast. Senior would be joining us later as would JR and Janie. A er the usual great meal that the Dairy has become well known for, we headed out to stock up the bars and other stops with Mags. Being early risers usually helps get us a good jump on most situa ons, most of the me, but not this me and while we were able to get Mags into On the Fringe the bars on Main St. were s ll closed and we couldn’t get in. Not to be thwarted in our mission we drove down to Clare’s HD Port Dover and stocked them up with Mags and then visited with Gale and Richard at their amazing store for

ALWAYS A SELLOUT - BOOK YOUR SPOT EARLY www.forteriemotorcycleswapmeet.weebly.com a while and gabbed with them and some of their customers who had started to come in at a steady pace and it certainly looked like it was shaping up to be a busy day for them, it wouldn’t be the usual mad house busy that a warm weather Friday13th crowd brings but it would be busy just the same. It was my first opportunity to really check out the store as on other occasions I and the Store were both too busy for me to look around. I was very happy to have the me as Gale and Richard are two of the nicest people you could meet and their store is amazing. We got to slowly look around and take advantage of some their great prices. This actually set the tone for the day and we just sort of cruised rather than rushed around. We came back up to the Park and parked the Black Bitch I armed myself with my camera, cane and some Mags, then took a walk up to Main Street where we ran into Shawn McCooey from The World Famous Fort Erie Swap Meet up there with a Metric Bike that was to be his tear down bike for the upcoming Swap Meet (Details to follow…. Watch your Riders Mag!) strapped to the back of his Pick-up truck promoting the Hell out of his event and a rac ng lots of a en on. There were perhaps around a dozen bikes out on the street; many of them had side-cars on them. We strolled along pu ng Mags into Captain Billy’s, The Norfolk and Angelo’s then wandered down to where the Kinsmen had set up shop selling off old stock of shirts and right near them The 81 Store was doing a “brisk” (Pun intended) business with their shirts and other support merchandise. We stopped back at the truck to grab a supply of t shirts before heading to Angelo’s for a much needed beer where we found Santa and his crew of a rac ve Santa-e es at the bar soaking up some fesve cheer and making the place look merry and bright. We figured that this was as good a place to meet up with Senior, JR and JB as any and se led in along with everybody else who figured this was better than out in the cold. It was a good decision because the place soon filled up
with all kinds of Folks and some of our crew members like Greg and Jean, Jonathan and our new cartoonist Mike came in and sat with us followed by Sr. with JR and JB appearing and soon we had a full table of Riders Mag Crew for a while at least. It got to be a fun spot with Jim Hipkin from Hips, Vern from BRO Erie Shores, Gator and company, Doc and his lovely lady, the always cheerful Jenn Ephgrave and so many other stopping by to say hello and I even got one boob shot just to round out the trip to Port Dover.
Gradually the crowd thinned out and our crew started making their way to the exits and we decided that we too had be er call it a day. All in all it was a pre y good day despite the shi y weather. We had a great me but it felt good to se le into the warm interior of The Black Bitch and head for home. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas to all and a happy New Year. See you out there!

Drago’s Memorial Ride You ever take the me to sit back with an ice cold brew in your hands and reflect on where you are in your life and how you got there. How about how long you’ve been riding, what you started out riding and the hundreds of people you’ve met in your travels. For some of us old farts, I know that I have forgo en more people than I can remember. Old what’s his name with the rigid shovel and that guy with the sweet knuckle that he spent 10 years collec ng parts for. How about Bobby, what’s his name, the guy down the street with the sweet ass girlfriend, when you were growing up. Man how you wanted to be like him. Not a care in the world. Riding where and when you wanted to. You could work a li le here and there, put a couple of bucks in your gas tank and ride pre y much anywhere for $10.00. favorite watering hole. Every once in a while, you remember the guy that made something for himself and didn’t just dream the life. He lived the life and made his dream come true. On September 15th, in somewhat less than seasonal weather, 200 hundred of us, braved the elements and rode on the 14th tribute, in memory of such a man. A very well organized 100+ klm ride took us through some of southwestern Ontario’s scenic countryside. Running north of Stra ord we cruised non stop through li le known towns such as Gads Hill, Slabtown, and Monkton. People must have been thrilled to have a parade of this magnitude in their towns. Friendly residents waved as we rode by, never knowing or understanding the reason of our ride. Ending back at the Khaki Club just outside Wellesley, where we started from, we looked forward to the pulled pork on a bun and the door prizes and silent auc on that awaited us. There was no race, no winners, no trophies on todays run. The real winners were those of us that knew the man we rode in tribute of today. This year was termed as the last Drago’s memorial ride by the organizers. This is not going to be the end of a legacy, but
Drago’s Memorial Ride the beginnings of something bigger and be er. As we all have long me riding friends and rela ves that have been taken from us by cancer, it is rumored, that the organizers realize that there are many others that deserve to be remembered as well. Not by what they had done, but by the common disease which had taken them from us. This year with the support of numerous sponsors including, Preston Cycle, Kitchener Harley, Mostly Ironheads, Cycleworks, MD Compressors and a host of over 15 other sponsors, the organizers, in conjunc on with the Bridgeport Wish Run, have donated over $101,000.00 to The Grand River Cancer Center. Every li le bit makes a difference, so now with a new venue in the works, we will get that chance to take one day a year, to remember and reflect on those that lost the ba le. A er all we are at war and like each ba le that is fought, there will be casual es. A fi ng tribute to those

Clare’s HD and Clare’s Fenwick Christmas Open House 2013 One Fantas c Open House, Two Great Loca ons! Clare’s HD, Niagara on the Lake, and Clare’s Cycle and Sports, Hwy. 20, Fenwick. First, I rolled into Cares HD, the party was on and the huge parking lot was completely full! I managed to find a spot to park and a er wandering through the huge crowd that stretched from the front doors to the parts counter I managed to get myself a spot in one of the four line-ups. My goal was a Christmas present, from me to me; a shiny new LED taillight for my old Geezer Glide. Finally reaching the parts counter and parts expert Tim with a casual yet confident approach efficiently got me through my purchase and bagged my light in short order….. thanks Tim! I hung out for a bit in the
massive store that was decked out for the fes ve season then stopped outside for a barbecued hot dog thanks to Bro Niagara who were looking after the grill and they also provided me with great, accurate direc ons to my next stop; Clare’s Cycle up on highway 20. A er the hustle and bustle on the QEW it was definitely a treat ge ng up to the rural Fenwick loca on of Clare’s Cycle and Sports with their over 50 years of history. Christmas was certainly in full swing here too, fes ve and complete with Santa himself who seemed to share the same humour as a recent C.M.A. Hall of Fame inductee by the name of Wesley Peirce…no it couldn’t be….. Looking lost, I wandered in and

Mr. John Clare himself, approached me and a er introduc on, he responded to my query as to the whereabouts of a young lady named Lisa whom I had called to arrange a tour of this amazing dealership by personally escor ng me on a hunt for Lisa. He set quite a pace and I was barely able to keep up. He a ributed his good health to a new cow bell??? I’m s ll scratching my head over that statement. About 20 minutes later we found Lisa serving customers at the extremely busy parts counter. Mission accomplished, John headed off to greet the many customers and old friends that were crowding in and Lisa took charge. Lisa definitely has a very strong passion for both of these great loca ons and the “Cooks Tour” she provided me was awesome and enlightening as she pointed out the diversi es of the shop from area to area throughout

Clare’s Niagara Christmas Open House Only a few brave bikers rode into Clare’s Harley Davidson of Niagara on Saturday. It was unseasonably cold, windy with a few flurries that only threatened but never added up to anything. I got to Clare’s around 10 and was lucky to get a parking spot. The place was packed and every counter had line ups. People were doing their Christmas shopping early at Clare’s Christmas Open House and taking advantage of their store wide sales. I wandered around saying Hi to the usual suspects. Brothers Keeper MC had their usual spot at the back near the Diana Sweets area of the store. This year they had some good looking t-shirts and hats for sale. A number of people were socializing and enjoying the free coffee and donuts in the old diner area. The whole counter was filled with boxes of donuts of every type….a sugar junkie’s dream come true. At the front of the store, Harry and Diane of the Fabulous Fenwick Lions Club were selling ckets again this year for another Screaming Eagle bike that will be drawn at Biketoberfest in September. Niagara College had a few instructors of their Motorcycle Cer fica on Course on hand to answer any ques ons. Of course, Niagara HOG was set up in their corner selling ckets on a beau ful Christmas basket of Good Cheer. Sales were good and people were also asking how they could join the club. Niagara HOG was also set up outside barbequing hot dogs. Sales were steady but it was so cold that most people grabbed a hot dog and headed for their car….no si ng around the picnic table and cha ng. Inside the people moved around mee ng old friends and browsing around. A large area of the store was filled with used bikes

costumers and friends. Suzanne told me that sales were over the top and I can believe it. I saw one guy walk out with his arms full and a Clare’s employee pushing a cart that was packed high with boxes. I asked the guy what he bought and he said, “Chrome”. Looks like someone is going to be busy over the winter
months. Around 2:00 we had a special guest visit the store. Santa came in “Ho, Ho, Ho… ing” his way around the store and giving candy canes out to all the good boys and girls. His lovely elf, April, was taking pictures and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Harley New Year.

On a picture perfect day under a bright blue, cloudless sky, I once again had the dis nct privilege and honour of being invited to a end an event that is near and dear to my heart; The Brothers of The Blade “Daybreak” party that the Club does each year in Support of special needs group homes from throughout the region that they do through their own registered charity that they administer. They do another similar event up in Manitoulin every year that I’ve been invited to but as yet haven’t been able to get to that they lovingly call “The Manitoulin Penny Run”. The first one I a ended years ago was a heartwarming experience that will stay with me forever, and each subsequent Daybreak that I’ve a ended has just added to it. It doesn’t get old! It is a perfect example of
THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 22
humanity and pure charity and good will. It is humbling and it is sincere! I search for words to describe how this event makes me feel and fail miserably each me. Euphoria? Humility? Joy? Fulfillment? I don’t think there is any one word that accurately capsulate the feeling I get when I witness the joy that these few men and women bring to so many. The members of The Brothers of the Blade, their friends, families and supporters put a lot of me and effort into this annual event mo vated en rely by the joy that they bring to the ones that they do it for. The “kids” as they are called which is not en rely accurate as many are, in terms of years on this planet, adults suffering from disabili es and challenges are the focus of all the efforts and prepara ons this event is their day to shine. For “The kids” their families and the caregivers it is a day that is special and a day just to watch these special people just have fun and share in that fun is just incredible! It is really something to see and experience as the many cars and vans drive into this fabulous property that The Blades take such pride in and from the second the doors are opened these enthusias c visitors run and leap into the arms of these bikers and exchange hugs and handshakes and sincere gree ngs. Those that have been here for this event in the past are somewhat prepared for the display of emo on that this event produces but those here for the first me are mesmerized by the scene that unfolds and the joy that is all consuming and the smiles that are contagious. I shoot hundreds of pictures at each and every
BOTB Daybreak 2013 one of these events and when I’m feeling down for whatever reason I open the files and look through those pictures and it instantly li s my spirits and puts me on a higher plain. There are goody bags (Something that supporters Ray Carter and his wife Maggie have taken great pride and sa sfac on in pu ng together for years now.) A ta oo studio where removable ta oos are lovingly applied to anxious par ers, a clown lady making balloon animals a great barbecue complete with a spread of salads and other great items and much, much, more. There are modified biker games such as the wiener bite, egg race and the potato in the straw game along with lots of other ac vi es but the highlight of the day remains the motorcycle rides!
The lineup is long as and the excitement builds as helmets are placed on the wai ng heads and some are literally vibra ng at the an cipa on of what is in store as they await their turn. The Blades have specially designed and constructed loading and unloading pla orms to safely place exuberant passengers aboard one of the many bikes belonging to members, supporters and representa ves of others clubs like The Highway Riders recognize a good cause and came out to help lined up to take them on a ride around the well maintained property and then be carefully unloaded when the ride is done. Many dash right back to the end of the line to go again. Everyone gets a picture of themselves on the bikes and

I thank them for the reminder that humanity does truly exist and some like government agencies and poli cians like talk about what should be done to make things be er and make a big noise about doing it while doing li le or nothing and actually cut back on funding for these groups and programs, you actually do it quietly and with li le fanfare or publicity because for The Brothers of The Blade and those who support them it isn’t a show or a spectacle it is just what they do. It is a simple act of humanity and kindness. Through money raised by Club events and the efforts
of their chari es Board of Directors they not only provide the group homes with funds for much needed projects and programs but use their combined exper se and knowledge to obtain quotes, implement and oversee these projects
through to comple on. To some uninformed it may be just a Motorcycle Club doing “biker stuff.” Maybe some have the misguided view of what “Biker Stuff ” really is. This isn’t SOA. It’s reality! L&R! Maybe next year I’ll come to Manitoulin.

Call to the FBI The phone rings at FBI headquarters. “Hello?” “Hello, is this the FBI?” “Yes. What do you want?” “I’m calling to report my neighbor Adrian Thibodeaux! He is hiding marijuana inside his firewood.” “Thank you very much for the call, sir.” The next day, the FBI agents descend on Thibodeaux’s house. They search the shed where the firewood is kept. Using axes, they bust open every piece of wood, but find no marijuana. They swear at Thibodeaux and leave. The phone rings at Thibodeaux’s house. “Hey, Adrian! Did the FBI come?” “Yeah!” “Did they chop your firewood?” “Yep” “Great, now it’s your turn to call. I need my garden plowed.” The Fly Issue In a crowded city at a crowded bus stop, a beau ful young woman was wai ng for the bus. She was decked out in a ght leather mini skirt with matching ght leather boots and jacket. As the bus rolled up and it became her turn to get on, she became aware that her skirt was too ght to allow her leg to come up to the height of the first step on the bus. Slightly embarrassed and with a quick smile to the bus driver she reached behind her and unzipped her skirt a li le thinking that this would give her enough slack to raise her

So, a li le more embarrassed she once again reached behind her and unzipped her skirt a li le more and for a second me a empted the step and once again, much to her chagrin she could not raise her leg because of the ght skirt. So, with a coy li le smile to the driver she again unzipped the offending skirt to give a li le more slack and again was unable to make the step. About this me the big Texan that was behind her in the line picked her up easily from the waist and placed her lightly on the step of the bus. Well, she went ballis c and turned on the would-be hero screeching at him “How dare you touch my body!! I don’t even know who you are!” At this the Texan drawled “Well ma’am normally I would agree with you but a er you unzipped my fly three mes, I kinda figured that we was friends.” Big City Lawyer A big-city lawyer was represen ng the railroad in a lawsuit filed by an old rancher. The rancher’s prize bull was missing from the sec on through which the railroad passed. The rancher only wanted to be paid the fair value of the bull. The case was scheduled to be tried before the jus ce of the peace in the back room of the general store. The cityslicker a orney for the railroad immediately cornered the rancher and tried to get him to se le out of court. He did his best selling job, and finally the rancher agreed

to take half of what he was asking. A er the rancher had signed the release and took the check, the young lawyer couldn’t resist gloa ng a li le over his success, telling the rancher, “You are really a country hick, old man, but I put one over on you in there. I couldn’t have won the case. The engineer was asleep and the fireman was in the caboose when the train went through your ranch that morning. I didn’t have one witness to put on the stand. I bluffed you!” The old rancher replied, “Well, I’ll tell you young feller, I was a li le worried about winning that case myself, because that durned bull came home this morning.” House on Fire A blonde woke up in the middle of the night smelling smoke in her house. She ran downstairs to see what the problem was and saw that her kitchen was on fire. Grabbing her cell phone, she ran outside and called 911. “911, what’s your emergency?” the dispatcher answered. “I need you to come to come quick,” the blonde screamed. “My house is on fire?” “Okay, please remain calm,” the dispatcher said. “You say your house is on fire? How do we get there?” “Duh! Use the big red truck!” From Behind The hit-and-run vic m was just ge ng to his feet when a policeman ran up to help. “My mother-in-law just tried to run me over!” the shaken man told the cop. “The car hit you from behind,” the officer said. “How could you tell it was your mother-in-law?” “I recognized the laugh!” he replied. I Heard You Died A psychiatrist met a pa ent of his and exclaimed, “It’s interes ng to see you here, I had heard you died.” “Absolutely not. As you can see, I’m very much alive,” smiled the pa ent. “Hmm, I don’t know if I’m convinced,” said the psychiatrist. “The man who told me is much more reliable than you.”

Franks Tribute
This month’s feature biker is Frank from London, he was good enough to step up when I put out the call for sportsters back in the spring when we were preparing to head out on our annual southwestern Ontario trip. Franks gal Tracey has been involved in an event called the Rock’n Wheel Ride in Mount Brydges for a number of years and they started adver sing the event a few years back. She sits on the commi ee and they were just se ng their date for the event and thinking about adver sing and event lis ngs when I put out my plea for some men with sportster for the mag so it ended up being a good fit as we had a true shortage of sportys which happens every few years as the list grows long and then

contracts as all those on the list have either sold their bikes or upgraded a er being on the list for several years. Although they live in London these days both Frank and Tracey are from the Mount Brydges area and Frank tells me that there was a lot of open space so they grew up riding the dirt out that way. Of course they came to the city to work and stayed raising a family. Frank says he has a great job in pain ng working for a co m m e rc i a l ou it with contracts ranging from college dorms to huge property management firms owning buildings all over southwestern Ontario and he says that
Franks Tribute
it keeps him hopping, especially at the me we do our southwestern trip in late April when all the colleges are le ng out for the year and there’s demand coming in from all over. Frank says that once he was in the city he realized how much he missed his dirt riding and went out and got himself a big dual sport street trail bike and found release from work tearing around on the trails on his big 650 single. He chuckles when he says well here’s the problem, I found out a er a few years of tearing up the dirt that I was ge ng to old for that stuff and I was havin trouble moving for work a er a session in the dirt. He really like riding and didn’t want to give it up and he had a brother in law who was ridin Harley and belonged to the local H.O.G. chapter in town and he thought that might be another way to get that release that he was lookin for without the physical bea ng that he was takin riding his big dual sport bike, so he started lookin around for a trade or sale and he found himself this 99 XL883C north of Toronto. Turns out the guy that owned this bike had had some surgery (Frank didn’t specify if it was related to the Sportster or no) but he wanted to sell the Harley which he says was about 3 or 4 years old at that point and had 30k’s on it. But he didn’t want to give up riding so he was interested in taking Franks dual sport on trade plus some cash. Frank loaded up his bike in the back of his truck drove off to north Toronto and took the Harley for a ride saying he had never even rode one before so he was kinda uncertain but the guy wanted to make the deal throwing in his leathers to the deal as well. Frank got himself a nice stock ride with some miles on it but nothing too drama c. He says once that they got that bike they joined the local H.O.G. chapter and rode to a couple of provincial rallies saying they got out to an event in
Kingston as well as one in Owen Sound. Of course the bike needed to be personalized early on he upgraded that cams and igni on on the bike put a pile of bolt on stuff onto the bike and hooked up with a local hobby painter for a custom mural paint job on the ns. When I asked Frank if he had any ambi ons for a long ride he said that he had some family up O awa way and he thought that he would like to take a ride up that way to visit and ride the O awa valley on both sides of the river but beyond that he didn’t want to make plans for any long rides with Tracey un l he could upgrade to a bigger bike thinking that he would like to get to some sort of a touring ride and then his long ride ambi ons were endless but he was specific that his plans involved re ring first as he said that unfortunately for him his busiest work schedule really conflicted a lot with the riding season. Eventually his original gas tank sprung a leak due to a bracket problem which he says they tried to reweld a number of mes to stop the leak finally replacing the tank and having it repainted replacing the original tank which he keeps as a memento. In the last year or so he has also had the engine rebuilt to a 1200 saying that once he got to around 75,000 kms he figured it was me to upgrade and put a li le more power between his legs having the engine bored and replacing the pistons with some Keith Black 1200’s.
He says the bike runs like a million bucks now, just like a brand new bike and he plans to hang onto it for the foreseeable future but s ll wants to upgrade to a bigger bike to realize his dreams of riding the con nent including a ride out west and then south along the pacific coast highway #1. He says he also plans to ride Sturgis, Daytona, Myrtle Beach and anywhere else that’s warm. He says he would love to hand his bike off to Tracey who would really like to ride but has yet to even think about ge ng her license to ride and says if she never does he would sell his bike privately thinking he would do be er than if he traded it in on a newer bigger touring bike or even a brand new one. In a sad twist of fate the guy who got Frank into riding Harleys his brother in law Chris was killed in a freak accident at work and part of the new paint is a tribute to Chris. Frank rides to remember his brother in law Chris G.B.N.F.

Just the other day as I was wai ng for my wife to come out of a store, I witnessed an elderly man with a bicycle with bags ed on the back, the cross bar and the handlebars. Just as he approached my truck, one of the bags ed to the cross bar split, dropping clothing on the ground. I had one of those cloth shopping bags in the truck and I gave it to him. On the ground lay a pair of torn trousers, a heavily soiled jacket and a shirt which I’m sure hadn’t seen a washing machine for some me; clothes that you and I may have thrown away. But they were his, his possessions. He thanked me, quickly shoved them back into the bag and ed it to the bike. I offered him others but he refused as he said the rest were in good shape, took the bike and walked away. My heart went out to that old man. I drove to the corner where he was wai ng for the light to change. I asked if he was hungry, could he use a meal? His answer was that he was a bit hungry but did not want to impose; he had last ate a couple of days ago. I took him in to a restaurant where we sat off to the side with onlookers staring at us. He just ate, his head down, quickly as if he knew something was going to happen and it did. The owner came over to us and told us he had to go as his looks and smell were bothering other customers. He said the meal was on the house and for us to return any me to the back door and he would feed him. He really amazed me as we talked in between bites. His wife had divorced him and took everything, the kids were upset with him and told him they did not want to see him again. His life had become poor, he had lost hope of life ge ng any be er and was just living with his earthly goods day a er day. This man was homeless, lived just outside of town in an old tool shack le by a road builder and was sort of hid in the woods. He said the only people who talked to him were bikers. He went on to tell me how people would go out of their way to make remarks to him; police told him to move on– get out of town. But bikers treated him with respect, bought him food, gave him things. I asked if I could pray for him and he said he would like that. A couple of days later, I went to that old shack with no back wall but an old motorcycle cover ed over the opening and an old ma ress on the ground. But the old man was gone and I never did see him again. At Bikers Church, we did a study on prayer back in November and it said you need to always be ready to pray for others. For years I have found myself praying for individuals that come to my mind. Every day I pray for bikers all over and always make a point of praying for that old man. I have even found myself riding along a road praying for bikers in court, bikers on charity rides etc. In our Life’s Manual in Ma hew 7:7,8 it says, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you and everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds and to him who knocks, it will be opened. Anyone can pray, it’s like talking to God, just you and Him, like He is your best friend (which He is). You will be surprised when He does answer your prayer but I will tell you that He is never early and may not answer the prayer the way you desire. I pray a hedge of protec on around everyone’s bike, both sides, front and back, top and bo om and keep everyone safe in 2014. Riding Russia with Donny Looking for adventure and whatever Comes our Way Hul Sharif Mosque The Iman, Hul Sharif was killed by the Russian Czar, Ivan the Terrible in circa-1400 to wipe out the Muslim faith in Kazan Tartarsan. He replaced the mosques with ChrisƟan churches. Two hundred years later, the Russian Empress, Catherine the Great visited Kazan and built a mosque beside every ChrisƟan church. Today, the Hul Sharif Mosque overlooks Kazan inside the Kremlim (fortress with government) and is the most impressive building in Kazan. Moslems and ChrisƟans pray beside each other to this day. I le Toronto for Moscow to hook up with my friend Egil from Bergen Norway. We are mee ng our Moscow friends. Then we are heading east to the fabled city of Kazan in a pack ride with our Russian friends and whoever else shows up. Jetlagged and bar hopping on my first night in Russia, I am on my own; just the way I like it. My first impressions are that not many speak English but it is friendly and clean. Importantly, the weather is warm. Everything you heard about the women in Russia is true. Like La Belle Province (Quebec) in Canada, they take what they got and work it to the best it can be; the difference: there is more of them everywhere. We saw a female cop in Red Square. She would make Playboy Playmate of the Year without audi oning. What is best is that the police are not interested in us one li le bit. Russia is supposed to be repressive and Canada free

but quite the opposite is true. Canada can be a police state and Russia is free....and guess what, they like bikers here...even the government seems to. In Red Square, the tourists stopped taking pictures of the Kremlin...the girls lined up to have pictures taken with us. It was the same deal in the fabled city of Kazan. Next day at the Moscow clubhouse, the friends had two new 2013 bikes (Street Glide and a Heritage) for me and Egil. I was worried I would be riding to Kazan on an old rigid frame Ironhead Sportster; wrenching the whole way...now we are going in style. I had no idea but we needed good handling bikes with ABS brakes. Other friends are joining us from Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and the Ukraine. The German friends are on their own ride going straight to Kazan. The tempo is building. Go a get some sleep...heading into the unknown tomorrow. The Ride We leave at 5am on the 850 km pack ride. If you wait a er 5am, the traffic in this city of up to 20 million will delay you forever...the pack roars through a long tunnel with deafening noise, “we are gonna climb so high....one of us is gonna die” (Steppenwolf, modified). Maybe it is coincidence but every ride I went on in Moscow, trucks were washing the streets. It is a very clean city. This ride turns out to be a dangerous; equal in danger to my ride in Swaziland in South Africa. However, if we were pa ent, didn’t whiteline through traffic, and went slower it would have been normal except for the potholes, tall, parallel asphalt pressure ridges, and truck grooves up to 10” deep. There are no good highways in Russia except close to the big ci es. The bikers here ride with skill and daring. Never complain about roads at home. Swaziland, Africa of all places had a be er main road. Traffic will stop and not move for hours. The biggest stoppage seemed like it was 50 kilometers long; mostly transport trucks. Here I am; jetlagged, whitelining at 40-60 km an hour, bikes in front and behind doing the same with jockeying trucks inches away on either side. We are blas ng through another death defying whitelining exercise when the traffic opens up and we almost ride over a biker lying in the middle of the highway a er a bad accident. Not one of ours but I felt for the guy in a big way. We ride and ride through the countryside. The pack gets into Kazan 14 hours later....we are red but excited. I feel sorry for any country that wants to invade this land. Visit this wonderful place and marvel at how our governments have lied to us. Now, what is a ride across Russia without a love story? A Russian Love Story Around the year 1400, give or take a few years, The Russian Czar, Ivan met the Tartar Queen of Kazan. She was so beau ful (nothing has changed in 2013) he fell in love upon first sight. He proposed marriage and offered her to be Queen of all Russia. She smiled and said “fuck you, Ivan”. Fuck you! Really?
Ivan brought his troops 850 kilometers from Moscow to conquer the fabled city of Kazan and take the Queen. He failed. He retreated, regrouped and tried again a er a few years of prepara on. He lost again. His troops were too few and too red a er the arduous journey without supplies to sustain the army. The Queen looked down on Ivan from the Kazan Kremlin (fortress) heights with a “fuck you Ivan” smile. Ivan retreated to an island on the Volga River. Ivan was a stubborn guy. He decided that he would build a fortress here to gain strength. However, he knew the Tartars would find out and a ack. Ivan retreated up the Volga 1000 kilometers to a huge forest. There, he made his army stronger. He also had a fortress built from the heavy logs. He disassembled the fortress, numbered each log so the troops could reassemble them like a Leggo set. He loaded the logs onto huge ra s and sailed back on the Volga River to the island outside of Kazan. They reassembled the fortress in three weeks before the Tartars could react. Now Ivan was strong. He made his third conquest. He took Kazan. As an Orthodox Chris an, he burned the mosques, killed the Iman and the students, and banned the Moslem religion. The people of Kazan renamed the Czar Ivan to Ivan the Terrible. The beau ful Queen had a choice. To save her city she must marry Ivan and come back to Moscow. She told Ivan she would marry him if he built a seven story tower taller than any current building so she could say goodbye to her beloved people. Ivan the Terrible lus ully did so. The Queen climbed the tower but could not bear to leave her people. She pronounced her last “fuck you Ivan” and jumped to her death! However, she survived the fall, transformed into a beau ful white swan and flew above. Two hundred or so years later, the Russian ruler Catherine visited Kazan. She asked the Tartars what they would like. They said we want to rebuild our mosques and become Muslim again. Catherine granted their wish and immediately built a mosque for the people of Tartarsan beside every Chris an Orthodox church. Catherine was loved by the Tartars and became known as Catherine the Great. Postscript: If ever visi ng this wonderful City of Kazan, you will see Chris ans and Moslems s ll living in harmony and peace as they pray beside each other in their respec ve churches and mosques. donny www.donnypetersen.com

Ride For Hope “Recovery Riders”
Woke up to a lovely day and it was about me…summer thus far has not been the greatest compared to what we enjoyed last year. I le the house at 9:15 and 35 minutes later I arrived at Hope Place in Hornby to take part in the first annual Ride for Hope. Many riders were already on site enjoying coffee and donuts. The ride le at 11:00 on a scenic route of approximately 300 km (going through the Forks of the Credit, Belfountain, etc.) with a stop at Jacox Harley Davidson in Mississauga. Here we were welcomed with some snacks and great deals which many people took advantage of. I really enjoyed

the way the ride was planned. No maps and no road captain. Many volunteer riders le 5-10 minutes before all of us and posi oned themselves at every turn we needed to do and once we arrived, they would indicate if we needed to turn le or right. There is no way we could miss a turn and get lost; in my opinion, the best way to do a ride…when you have the volunteers needed to do so. The end of the ride brought us back to Hope Place where everything was ready to welcome us back. A BBQ was in progress consis ng of hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, salads, water and pop. You could, if your appe te was big enough, have a taste of everything! The band Paradox was on stage playing and singing tunes ranging from George Thorogood to Lou Reed with Ride Sally Ride and more. The table with the silent auc on items such as gi cer ficates, gold ring, iPod, leather jacket, etc. was already crowded with people placing their bids. I did place a bid on the iPod but unfortunately lost out by $1.00...A erwards, we had many door prizes and a 50/50 draw worth a li le over $150.00 which was given back, by

Unfortunately the Show and Shine is held farther away from the rest of the town’s fes vi es, limi ng the number of onlookers and par cipants. The idea is being tossed around, to possibly hold it at the far end of Victoria St., at the end of the car show, or in the river view parking area behind the main street, which can be accessed by King St. N, Fletcher Cres. and Church St. This would open the opportunity for a larger number of people to admire the bikes, and support Au sm, as part of the Potato Fest, instead of it being a segregated event. All in all it was s ll a great day, with a great turnout, all for a great cause.

Kitchener H-D Ladies Nightby Manon DECEMBER 10TH, 2013
‘Tis the Season to Be Joly, and also the Season to be Sad and Lonely. Joly, because Christmas me is upon us; gettogethers with family and friends; gi giving and receiving; New Year’s wishes and dreams. Sad and Lonely because you have to be winterized, no more weekend rides with friends, no more summer bike par es and no more adventures to nowhere land with the wind in the face, and this for a few months.BUT, we do have friends that know how we feel and know what we need during these winter months - they are the staff and the management of Kitchener Harley-Davidson. Once again, they have showed us that we are part of their extended family, their friends and finest customers. The evening began at 6 p.m. with music, plenty of delicious food (catered by IBAKESTUFF from Cambridge) and drinks, to please everyone in a endance. Many unwrapped gi s were brought for Bury the Bike all for the less fortunate children in the Kitchener area, and let us not forget our extremely handsome firefighters available to wrap all the goodies that were purchased either as Christmas presents or for ourselves…with the latest being my favorite. And what would a Ladies Night be without THE MOTORCYCLES? They were everywhere, wai ng pa ently for us to sit on, to admire them and to wish upon a star, to be received as a Christmas present. Man, did I wish on all the stars that night for the brand new chrome FXSBSE CVO Breakout motorcycle. Just what I have been wai ng for all these years, but guess I will need to wait a few more years, buy more lo ery ckets or get another job. Ladies Night in December is always an exci ng place to see friends you haven’t seen in a while, to make new ones,

Kitchener Harley’s Bagger Nation by Kaz A er all the ghost’s & goblin’s, the ninja’s and walking dead costumes have been packed away for another year, we find some of our friends spor ng the Movember look. Gone are the tradi onal Halloween goodies and our thoughts now turn to preparing ourselves for another 4 month, 2 wheel hiberna on. Thankfully for some, this hiberna on period gives us a chance to update, upgrade or even buy a new ride for next year. Once again Kitchener Harley starts this transi on of season’s off with a night dedicated to all of us bagger riders. This year their Bagger Na on event, once again, gave us a jump start on wri ng out our Christmas wish list. On November 14th this year, Kitchener Harley opened its doors up to the loyal customers and provided us with a preview of things to come and also to spotlight some of the innova ve accessories introduced at last years event. LED headlight conversions, kick ass sound system upgrades and performance modifica ons. Technicians answered any ques ons you had and helped by sugges ng performance enhancements. From camsha upgrades, exhaust systems or to just adding a li le bling to your ride, there was someone to talk to. It was a chance to talk to them without interrup ng their work schedule. Of course there were some of the new 2014 liquid cooled models on display. Even if you are not a fan of liquid cooled bikes, HD is making changes to their fleet to remain compe ve and keep the heritage alive. Some of us geezers just don’t have the steam anymore to kick over that panhead or knuckle. They were the bikes that built the company and a very important part of the companies history. The new models may not appeal to all of us, with their computer controlled, GPS’ing, digital this and that gizmo’s, but it’s s ll about riding and not what you ride. It’s s ll a ma er of individual taste. The next genera on of Harley owners will have to create their own legacy and
struggle threw the same growing pains that we went threw with the transi ons from pan, shovel, evo into the twin cam and blockhead era’s. Fully staffed with technicians and sales staff, early Christmas shopping, at this no tax event, meant that there was something for everyone. Even caught Manon buying a few trinkets for herself and dona ng a couple of free subscrip ons to the mag. Free beer and hot dogs made for a very relaxed event and more of a social gathering than a sales event. This dealership truly cares about their customers and the products they sell. You can tell by the hundred plus people that turned out for this event, that they like products and staff here. Another successful event full of informa on, good mes and deals. On the road or at the shows Kitchener Harley is the place to go. Keep life real and enjoy the ride. Frank’s Magic Crops, Inc. Kaz

New Year in and old year out, and yet I always find myself struggling between an cipa ng all the different things I look forward to taking part in for the upcoming year and at the same me looking back on all that happened in the year that we just said good-bye to. 2013 was an even ul year and kind of reminded me of that classic Clint Eastwood western... The good, The bad and The ugly! I started the year off by going on a weekend road trip consis ng of two cars filled with buddies from the O awa area to a end the Motorcycle Supershow, at the Interna onal Center in Toronto, because a er all there is nothing be er to take away some of the s ng of winter and all that is associated with it, than a ending a show that is filled with motorcycles of all kinds and lots of the people who love riding those motorcycles. A ending the show also gave me the opportunity to hook-up and spend some me with some my colleagues from The Riders Mag , including Alex Jr, Alex Sr, and our new publisher & editor, Rick “Cri er” Davis.

from the Far East.... of Ontario that is! Later in the season the first actual Spring event that we par cipated in was the launch at City Hall for the month of May being proclaimed by Mayor Jim Watson, as Biker Awareness Month and while it was cloudy and cold well over 100 area riders were kind enough to crawl out of bed early and come down to take part in the event including several area groups who set up info booths. Groups such as the Na onal Memorial Ride, O.R.R. A ( Ontario Road Riders Assoc.) ,The Cel c Brotherhood and S.O.A.R ( Society of O awa Area Riders) the folks responsible for the whole project in having the City of O awa par cipate in making automobile drivers more aware of people riding motorcycles and perhaps remember to share the road which included municipal buses with large signs with the message on the back. All and all the event was a great success if for no other reason that seeing the city poli cians becoming more aware of their responsibility to help keep motorcycle riders safe on public roads and we all know that far too many riders are ge ng injured or worse by people in automobiles that just not paying a en on to the road because they are yakking on their damn cell phones, tex ng or just drinking their coffee while drumming out some damn tune that is playing on their car radio while they are supposed to be sharing the road with motorcycles. Congrats to the City of O awa and Mayor Jim Watson for ge ng on board with this campaign. In May we participated in our all me favorite Spring event, the Capital City Bikers Church Swap Meet/Info Day. The Church puts the whole event on for free, both to vendors and to the public. The a endance for this year’s event was es mated to be at somewhere between 2500 to 3000 people and the number of bikes that lined the surrounding streets was awesome to behold. Hillbilly, the “lovely” Nelia and all the great volunteers were once again able to make this swap meet the best in the O awa area. Two floors of swap and motorcycle related booths filled the church and outside in the courtyard, was busy all through the a ernoon with people enjoying the great weather and lining up to stuff their faces with burgers & fries. We spent me over at
Motorcyco Beau the Motor Maids booth where the “Lovely” Nancy Maloney and Jennifer Marsh were kind enough to give us our “fix” of homemade cookies & rice Krispie squares. The ladies of the Motor Maids are a prime example of women who can hold their own on the roads and Nancy, who is also the wife of our “Brother’ Grinder Maloney, con nues to ride all over Canada & the U.S. including during the winter me down south and I am pre y sure that she has logged in more miles than many male riders I have met. I had the pleasure this summer of a ending a Retread’s breakfast in Morrisburg and felt quite at home with a group where you have to be at least 40 yrs old to belong and the 40 yr olds are the “Kids” of the group. During the breakfast I had the pleasure of si ng between two lovely ladies one of whom was a young 88 yrs old and s ll involved in the world of motorcycles. Her and I had a great me trading stories and somewhere during the conversa on we decided that she would be my “Cougar” much to the amusement of all those si ng nearby and who got to par cipate in our conversa on. I have always said that bikers have more fun than mainstream people and those great folks at the Retread’s breakfast certainly proved me right. If you are over 40 and looking for good people to ride with or go on runs with, then try looking up a chapter of the Retread’s in your area because if they are anything like the Eastern Ontario chapter...You will truly enjoy yourself. Another of the events that we a ended this summer and thoroughly enjoyed took place in the town of Merrickville, a historical li le town built on the Rideau Canal system and about a 40 minute drive southwest of O awa. Over the years Merrickville has become a familiar des na on for motorcycle riders from not only Ontario and Quebec but also riders from the Northern New York because the town is surrounded by all kinds of great roads
from the Far East.... of Ontario that is! and within the town itself are dozens of interes ng shops, ar st’s studios and a wide variety of eateries and add to that the canal locks and surrounding park make for hours of things for riders to take part in. The town kindly closed off about three blocks of one of their main streets for riders to park their bikes and par cipate in the event and I rough counted about 400-500 bikes that showed up to take part and some area of the street were marked off for the various classes of bikes if people wanted to take part in the Show & Shine. In August we a ended the 2nd Annual Big Daddy’s Cowpaddy which is held partway between the towns of Merrickville and Brockville and this year Big Daddy’s was blessed with perfect weather and the turnout was impressive. One of the main features of the grounds where Big Daddy’s takes place is their rodeo events area which is set down in a gully with lots of flat area for the various rodeo games to take place in and the people watching the rodeo have the op on of viewing the games from either the same level where the rodeo is happening or they can go up to the higher level and get a more panoramic look at the rodeo as it takes place. Later in Fall I had the pleasure of taking part in the Big Daddy’s Fall Toy Run that set off from the “Charley’s Place” restaurant just outside of the town of Kemptville and because most of the people who take part in the summer event a end this one as well it made the toy ride a real hoot from beginning to end. Some of the other events I

(613) 392-8433 www.makeitroar.com took part in and hope many of you will put on your calendar for par cipa ng in the new year of 2014 were the Old Bastard’s Rally in Delta Ontario, where riders could go from site to site and see the living history of motorcycles. We walked around the campgrounds and were amazed at the number of bikes that people kept poin ng at and saying “I used to own one of those” or “I wish I had never sold the one I had” ...and I did the same thing myself and must have seen about a dozen bikes I wished I could have brought home and parked in my garage. One high point for me at the Old Bastard’s Vintage Rally was our coming upon a completely restored and original Crocker v-twin motorcycle which were powerful bikes that were only produced from 1936 – 1942. It turns out I know the guy that owns it and while the bike looked like it had just recently come out of a show room, he actually takes it for a ride. The final rides of the season for us were the Ride of Splendor in support of the Carleton Place Hospital and closer to my heart, the Ride for Au sm. This ride was organized by a friend of mine whose has two granddaughters who are au s c and while the ride was in early October, which is an iffy me for a ride in Eastern Ontario with the weather not usually co-opera ng, it makes me proud to have seen the riders who braved the cold wet weather to show their
from the Far East.... of Ontario that is! support for the cause and I also had the pleasure to talk with Senator Jim Munson who is very ac ve in ge ng more support for people with au sm and as well, the Mayor of O awa, Jim Watson. As I said at the beginning of my column, it was a Clint Eastwood kind of year. The bad and ugly should have been the passing of Garth, the Wonder Doberman, my constant companion at dozens & dozens of motorcycle events and rides each year. He passed away a er a short but valiant ba le with prostate & bone cancer. Garth was not only my traveling companion, he was my service dog and he helped me deal with my PTSD and it seemed eerie yet right that for the rest of the riding season I was confronted by grey-bearded, ta ooed men whose eyes filled with tears or who could not finish a sentence when trying to say how sorry they were for his passing. When it has occurred to me that being a biker means that when mes are at their worst for you, the people in the biker community are at their best in being there for you and that was further demonstrated in late November when a “Brother” Tweety aka Frank Pilon ended his ba le with prostate and bone cancer. Shortly before he passed away we received a le er from him dona ng $60 dollars to the “Help Kick Start A Life – The Garth Rooney Project” not only because he and Garth were close buddies but they both had the same cancers. I a ended Tweety’s memorial and was asked to say a few words at the family’s request and while I did say a few words, it was truly one of the hardest tasks I ever had to do. It is easy to say good things about a biker who was loved by all. but hard to realize that you are never going to see them again un l we all meet up and ride again in Valhalla. 2013 is now past and 2014 is about to show that it can’t wait to be one of the best ever and I want to wish all my Brothers, my good friends and everyone in The Riders Mag family the very, very best of this New Year...or as we say in Irish... Athbhliain Faoi Mhaise Daoibh!...and like I always say, We Make Our Motorcycle Communi es Stronger...By Making Them Be er! ...Brotherhood! Motorcyco Beau

B & E Motorcycle Swap Meet by Tim
Stock or Chopper Dyna Replacement Frames 1 Marconi Court Unit #9 Bolton ON
I must admit I was pleased to get the call to cover the semi-annual B&E Motorcycle Swap-Meet. At the me our man Guardrail was sidelined for a couple weeks dealing with personal health issues and wasn’t available. I was going to a end regardless because I am in dire need of a new headlight for my squeezes bike , right out of Amsoil 20W-50 and I’m down to one oil filter on the self in the garage. Plus, I’m not one to turn down a great deal that you will probably only find at a Swap-Meet. And let’s not forget about the social aspect of the Meet....you always run into old friends! The old venue for the meet, the Chatham Auditorium was vic m to a wrecking ball a couple years back and since then the guys have been in search of a new loca on they can call home to the B&E Swap-Meet. And they found it! The new venue for the B&E Motorcycle Swap-Meet is The Chatham Farmer’s Market and is a cinch to find. Those travelling the 401 simply exit at Communica on Rd where Duke’s Harley-Davidson is located. Head north (right) to highway 2 and make a right turn (east) and you will be there in no me at all. I arrived at the Chatham Farmers Market with camera in-hand, a smile on my face and a pocket full of cash only to find the entry gate locked. I sat there for a few minutes just hopeful it was a bad dream and a er I blinked a couple mes I was hoping when my eyes opened the gates would be wide open and I would see the swarm of eager shoppers. It didn’t happen. The note to myself was something like “what the f~c#”! I was posi ve I had the right loca on and being 10:00am I knew I wasn’t too early, or late. A er si ng at the side of the road wondering what went wrong, I disappointedly headed back home. Back at home I brought up the highlights of the day to the old lady. With a sour look on her face she silently went
and grabbed the Mag with the ad in it. “It was on Saturday you f~c#ing dummy”, not her exact words...I am being nice here. Don’t know how I missed the big bold le ering sta ng Saturday, September 28th. You know you’re ge ng old when it’s not the fine print that’s an issue but the big bold fonts! I did phone Burky, who along with Eddie put on this show, and offered my apology for the f~c# up. Burky went on to explain that the event was a complete success. They are quite happy with the new venue and the support they received and they are looking forward to the Spring Swap-Meet at the same loca on. There were plenty of Vendors suppor ng the event and the events patrons were equally accommoda ng. In years past the guys have had the best of luck scheduling their event on days were above average weather condi ons have been experienced and it was no different this me around. Many of the events patrons rode their bikes in for the event. The word I got from friends who know how to read and supported the event is that they were happy they a ended. There were plenty of fantas c deals to be had. Keep your eyes focused on future issues of The Rider’s Mag for complete details on the Spring B&E Motorcycle Swap-Meet. Note to self...It will be held on a Saturday! In Chatham

Motorcycle Enhancements
Where Dreams become Reality
The Riders Mag Builder/Shop of the Month for Jan. 2014 is Motorcycle Enhancements owned and operated by John Cosen ni who decided some thirteen years ago to combine his passion for motorcycles and his engineering background and open a Motorcycle Shop. John is well known for his custom builds and fabrica on and has a room full of trophies and awards to prove it, but Motorcycle Enhancements is more than Show Bikes and Chrome and flash and flair but is a full service motorcycle shop that will work on any kind of motorcycle from Harley-Davidson, Bri sh and all and every type, model or style that exists. There is nothing that they won’t tackle and no challenge is too big or job too small. They have worked on everything from bobbers, choppers, café racers, trikes, ATV’s and one of the guys is also a fully licensed Motorcycle Technician that also has snowmobile experience. So it would appear that nothing is out of the realm of possibility or capabili es at this shop. John has assembled a real fine team, each with their own individual special es and skills, that when combined with a fully equipped shop, complete with a wide range of machining equipment, sandblasters and other specialized tools and machines that allow them to do “In House” what most other shops would have to send out to be done, in reasonable me frames at fair prices. The customer really stands to benefit and get more bang for their buck. The newly expanded Motorcycle Enhancements is an “old style” friendly shop where the customer can talk to the mechanics and feel a part of the process and not just a “necessary evil” to be condoned and kept at a distance un l it is me to pay the bill. From the
front office where Cassandra works her magic to the fine crew of mechanics and specialists; Jeff, Tom, James and John to look a er the wrenching and along with faithful Mascot/Shop Dog/ Companion/Friend/Confidant/Head of Security, Panda and with his capable assistant Rocco you are made to feel welcome here. They pride themselves at being a one stop shop and can offer everything you need to build the bike of your dreams, put your bike on the road and offer excellent maintenance to keep it running great. They offer far beyond what cons tutes “the usual services” at many other shops, like; oil changes, tune ups, re replacement and repair and the like but they also do; custom builds, chroming, polishing, machining, custom paint and fabrica on, plas c repair, metal part repair and everything and anything else that you need. They are not just a re and re shop but a full-on fix what needs to be fixed and do it right shop. I had seen John and his display of bikes at all the major bike shows for years and got plenty of pictures of him while covering the awards por on of the events as he picked up his many prizes as he would quite o en sweep en re categories. My first real mee ng with him was perhaps a half dozen years or more ago, when I was drawn to his display by an unusual contrap on that was being presented and introduced by a then, sixteen year old genius and inventor by the name of Ben Gulak. This was a one wheeled motorcycle (I guess unicycle might be a more appropriate descrip on) called the “Uno” that was really quite unique which John had played a major role in making a reality. The “Uno” has since been morphed into yet another adap on and was a huge hit on the TV Show “The Dragon’s Den” a couple of years ago and had all the

Where Dreams become Reality
Dragons wan ng a piece of the ac on, offering deals that involved Millions of dollars, but it all began with a visit to John at Motorcycle Enhancements and his ability to listen and recognize poten al. Knowledge, skill, imagina on, mechanical ability, workmanship, cra smanship and crea vity are very important quali es to consider in choosing someone to entrust with the building the bike of your dreams and while John offers all of those a ributes they are not the only things that he brings to the table. He offers pa ence and the ability to actually listen to his clients and can decipher their thoughts and transform them into reality. This is something that a long- me friend of mine Tamre was to discover a er her bike suffered some damage when it was hit in a parking lot last August. She too, had seen John at many shows over the years and a friend had recommended that she go to Motorcycle Enhancements for an es mate. She was about to discover John’s ability to listen and experience his pa ence and enthusiasm and her first visit for that es mate turned into a four hour consulta on and resulted in the sweet li le bobber that is gracing these pages
The par culars on the bike are as follows: 2002 Harley Davidson Fatboy Twin Cam 88 Solo Seat with Springs Seat - Terez Custom Leather Pipe Wrapped 50’s Style Bullet Tail Light Modified Custom Fender Custom front fender
today. Tamre was absolutely thrilled with the outcome that turned what had been a good bike, a fairly “Plain Jane” 2002 Fatboy into a great bike that is now her “Sweet Lil Bobbe e” and when she first saw the end product at the shop, John had to invoke the “No crying in the shop” rule as she was quite literally Blown away. So we gathered at my friend Dusty’s large woodworking Shop where he turns out some really fine custom cabinetry, luckily catching him between jobs, so he kindly let me use it as a photography studio for the day. I’d lined up a model, the adorable Alexandria along with Sensa onal Sarah who came to help out with photography and ligh ng and such and my buddy Jabber who is an amazing airbrush ar st to add a li le body art to Alexandria to fit the shots and the look that I wanted for this shoot. John wheeled the bike in and we spent the day trying our damnedest to properly showcase this latest crea on from Motorcycle Enhancement. Good job guys and gals! Tamre, no doubt, will be proudly entering her new pride and joy in lots of show and Shines next year.

Riding The Well the Christmas season is upon us, cold, blistery days, dark so damn early, I for one hate winter and Christmas for that ma er-- so commercialized, if it wasn’t for all the par es and socializing the whole month would be a waste. I am star ng to get out to events and stuff again, slowly ge ng my strength back, shit last weekend I stayed up ll 2am..been a long me since I done that. The Christmas events started around here with Tammy and Johns-- Christmas Santa Clause Ride that started again this year at the 594 Legion on Howard, where riders were able to purchase a great breakfast for a mere $7..Many people dress in Christmas a re, like Santa, elves, reindeer.. etc. etc.. Some even decorate their bikes. The riders donate toys, or cash and ride to different loca ons throughout the city, the weather put a damper on this year’s ride, but many braved the rain and cold to make some kids Christmas a li le brighter. The ride ended at Fooleries sports bar and the riders were treated to a chili diner...great mes were had and everyone had a blast. Thanks Tammy and John on another fine job this year. Kudos to you. A li le out of my territory, the Aces and Eights M.C. celebrated their 5th anniversary, I usually a end this Nov party but this year I had a previous engagement. So I would like to wish them a Happy Anniversary! See ya all soon. The guys of the Queensmen M.C. had a smelt fry, and was a highly a ended func on (I aint heard of smelt in years) well the cases of fish kept coming and boy were they tasty. The entertainment that night was supplied by Keith of Keith’s Karaoke. The guest got up and sang and danced and everyone was having a blast. That Keith sure knows his business. Thanks for the good me. Julie at the Colchester Bar and Grill, had a customer apprecia on day, for her regulars, and the place was packed, the guests were served a fantas c meal of Turkey, Ham, and all the fixins you needed, what an awesome gesture on Julie’s behalf, when all was said and done just one lonely turkey drums ck remained, an awesome day with awesome people. The Colchester Bar and Grill holds a bike night every Thursday, and I think it is one of the most a ended bike nights in the area, the parking lot is closed to other vehicles and is usually filled to capacity with bikes, the people are very friendly, and in the summer months there is a band playing on the pa o for your listening pleasure. The food is very good here and you get lots to sa sfy your cravings, definatly keep this place in mind when out riding in this area. There is usually many bikes in the parking lot, so friends are easy to find THANKS JULIE FOR ALL YOU AND YOUR STAFF DO FOR US. We are very apprecia ve..Whoo Hoo! Well I stopped in at

The volunteers not only do the dinner part, but any job the mission needs done that day, some filled baskets with food for the food bank while others sorted winter clothing and Christmas gi s, we even did the dishes. I think the volunteers get just as much from this as the folks who rely on the mission to survive, I know everyone le with a smile on their faces.. The Queensmen M.C. Christmas party was again held at the Moose Lodge, the meal this place puts on is second to none. A 4 course meal, star ng with salad, pasta, chicken and potatoes and finally prime rib. If you went away hungry you messed up. I think it is one of the best meals I have ever had, seconded only by last year’s meal. A er the meal the guys presented to the moose a whole table full of gi s to support their toy drive. The table was full of toys, winter hats and gloves, then a cheque for $500 was given so the older kids could have a Christmas too. You see most people purchase gi s for younger children etc. the club wants all kids to have a great Christmas. Phantom Thunder had a Christmas party at the Moose Lodge in London, very close to their C/H. of course the weather was bad. With London just ge ng pounded by a snow storm days before, I was happy to see all the people and clubs in a endance, actually the people kept coming and coming, the guys had to set up extra tables not once but twice as the door way filled again. The dinner consisted of a Turkey dinner with smashed potatoes, dressing, etc., etc. I am glad there was lots, as we got to go up for seconds Boy I needed that! Then out came the desserts and many of them, now too full to do anything..
