Cruising With Critter OK my knee is coming along really well. I got kicked out of Physiotherapy as they said they had done all they could do for me and I was good to go and should work on my own now. I’m soon going to be ready to drive a truck again! The Trike is on the road and project is almost complete except for some finishing, refining and dealing with some bugs. I’m loving it! And the more I ride it the more I love it. Everybody did such a great job and it came together well. I will be doing a feature on it in a future issue to tell all that went into it but for now I can’t say enough about the work Josh from JD Cycle did to bring the mechanical end of it together. It wasn’t just a simple bolt on deal as there were a lot of factors that needed to be addressed to fit my individual needs. My pal Dusty who is an amazing carpenter to start with, took it to a whole new level when he built the box and did the lights and electrical work. He also introduced me to Jim at Against the Grain to CNC the logos into the side and rear panels. Then Dwight at Simply Metal got the fenders done for me also through Dusty. Josh gave me a strong recommenda!on to contact the lovely and efficient Murielle MacNeil from Mantha Insurance and he told me that she was the lady to talk to when it came to insuring the Trike.
He didn’t steer me wrong as I had the beast fully covered quickly and painlessly and I was good to go? I had picked up a stereo system from Custom Audio-Visual a great shop right here in Newmarket on a recommenda!on from my buddy Murph and had Dusty install and wire that all in when he did the rest of the wiring and lights but he didn’t want to tackle the remote system so I took it to them and they did an amazing job and cut me a Hell of a deal. While si"ng wai!ng I got the opportunity to check out some of the systems they have to offer and may just upgrade Petoonia’s stereo as well as they’ve got some great systems for bikes. So I’m pre$y much ready to go other than the reverse not being installed yet and the quirky shit that appears in any build such as this. It will be at Port Dover! I once again borrowed a friend’s daughter to do the Calendar feature shoot at Jason Parker Race Cars in Brampton. This !me it was Beau!ful Brii that was up to the task and she, along with Mother “Wild, Wicked and Wonderful Wendy piled her stuff into the Black Bitch and we

headed for Jason’s amazing shop on Ward Drive in Brampton. I’ve known Jason for a lot of years now and we did a feature bike shoot here a few years ago featuring one of his bikes. Every !me I came here I was just amazed at the bikes and the wealth of parts and I’d find myself just wandering amongst all this great vintage stuff and wanted to do a writeup just on him and this shop and when I created the feature, this place was one of the first places on my list and in fact I had talked to Jason about it when the Calendar feature was just in its planning stages. I was thrilled to finally get to do it. Jason is a fascina!ng guy to start with and has some great stories to go along with the fantas!c bikes and builds.

Cruising With Critter He has a fascina on, and reverence for vintage bikes and has amassed quite a collec on over the years. He tries to keep certain bikes bone stock while others he transforms into his custom bobbers. Jason s ll works pre y much on his own although a young man named Trevor does come in to help out and he has many likeminded friends who drop in to help out with different projects from me to me. This isn’t the place for new and shiny as Jason doesn’t have anything newer that a Shovelhead in his collec on. Flatheads, Knuckleheads, Panheads and Shovelheads are everywhere. In bikes, in stands, on benches and on the floors, complete, in pieces, some being built some being torn down but they are everywhere! Pre y and cute are not what this shop or Jason is about. Pre y and cute is what I brought with me and Wendy and Brii went off to get ready for the shoot as I went about trying to capture the essence of this shop and all its treasures. Many of these bikes are bone stock right down to the pa na that has occurred naturally over the decades of just exis ng. For some people they would instantly be torn down and restored

For him the natural beauty is there already and the wear and tear and the dents and other signs of age just give it character. Much like the old bikers that rode them and loved them it is the wear and tear that makes them who and what they are. They are mechanically sound and for Jason and many others (Myself included.) that is the beauty. Like

You can look at the exterior and you can go for pre$y or handsome, hair, make-up, fancy clothes and accessories and superficial stuff, and many at mes you will be disappointed in the final analysis or you can overlook i m p e r fe c t i o n s , signs of aging and wear, like scars, wrinkles, and stretch marks and whatever www.jungleheatimports.com else that living life has put there and be happy and proud of what you have and who you have enjoyed it with and just enjoy it as long as you can! I know what I prefer. Anyhow Brii was ready to go and it was me to really get to work. This job is easy when you have good subject ma$er and I’ve been blessed with being able to work with some amazing girls and Brii was no excep on. The shoot went really well and I was happy with the results. Jason also has an obsession with a certain Era as his style of building would suggest and he has amassed an enormous collec on of posters, pictures and artwork from that period
of me and that includes some of “Big Daddy, Ed Roth’s” original artwork that wasn’t at the shop and I had really hoped to get pictures of for this piece but couldn’t get it done in me to run with it this me. . Maybe we can do a revisited piece at a later date. I’ll work on it! Thanks Jason, for your me and hospitality! Thanks Brii for your pa ence with me and thanks John and Wendy for the loan of your daughter! It was a great day! I heard that a buddy of mine Ross Adams was having a 60th Birthday party complete with bands and all the good stuff that goes naturally with a party and thought I’d just crash it! I got aboard “Black Bitch 3” (That’s her name un l she earns another.) and headed off in search of the party. I had the address and googled it, so I had a clue and was off! I knew I wouldn’t be staying late as I had tons of work to do at home trying to keep pace with my schedule and workload from the Mag and I s ll like to spend some me with Godzilla and the Wonderdogs, but I had to swing by and pay my respects to the “Old Guy”. I pulled in and rolled down the long driveway to party central, parked and wandered to where the Birthday Boy was holding court. I stayed for a bit shoo ng the shit with many old friends and got a few shots before wandering off to get started on the pile of work that was wai ng it home. I fired up the trike, waved goodbye and was off and heading for home! That is where the plan went south. As I said this trike is brand new to me and there are many li$le things that about her that I’m discovering as I go. Li$le things like “How accurate is the fuel gauge?” Things

Cruising With Critter that maybe I should have considered before I ventured out into the countryside. I, of course did take note of the li le semicircle of li le bright blue LED’s on the le side of the tank that represent my fuel level and did note that there were 3 lights on and didn’t think about it again un l leaving the party and no cing that now just two lights were shining back at me! Two lights must s ll be OK I thought….be er than no lights or one light flickering, so off I went! It s ll didn’t register un l the motor started to stu er and fart as I reached the top of one hill. “Hmmmmm?” was one of my many u erances as I pondered where I was in proximity to a gas sta on that was open. I reached for the reserve switch. I felt around and found nothing. “WTF??? Shit! This is fuel injected! No reserve no mercy!” I thought out loud. “Nobody out here to hear me! ” I was betwixt and between and made the choice to head towards Port Perry area! I made it to beau ful downtown U ca that had closed for the night rolled up the sidewalks and gone home! I got my cell phone out and called my pal Dusty who was at the party (No I hadn’t got too far away.) and he and another old friend Turbo headed out with a can of gas to get me back on the road. I now had me to reflect and contemplate just how many gas sta ons that I had passed on my way to the party and how I could have spared myself the humilia on and the me I was now was ng. I had another couple in a pickup truck that recognized me, stop and were willing to help, if help hadn’t been on the way. They offered a posi ve point in the incident “You now know how many blue lights before you run out!” Then they winked, smiled and waved as they drove away I made a memo to myself to write down how many blue lights ‘ l empty and a ach it to the tank! Turbo and Dusty had me gassed up and running and I was just about to leave when another car stopped and my old friend Piper and his bride Pat jumped out so we turned a problem into a social event right there on the mean streets of downtown U ca so all’s well that ends well. Thanks Turbo and Dusty! Happy Birthday Ross you old dog! I try to get out to as many events as I can and try to at least stop if I’m in the neighborhood. I was on my way back from an event in Oakville and I knew that Jacox Harley-Davidson was having their Demo day so I decided to stop by and catch at least the tail end of the event. The weather had been less than stellar and I was wondering if they had been able to get any rides in at all. I rolled up and tracked down the lovely Julie Mar n and the equally deligh"ul Keely Jacox and they said that it had been a good day despite the unpredictable weather and they did take advantage of a small window of opportunity when

National Motorcycleand Tattoo Show 2014 This remains one of my absolute favourite shows and I was really looking forward to it. My knee was well on the mend and I was doing my best to debut “Black Bitch 3” my new trike at this show. It was coming along well but as the me leading up to the show dwindled or rather raced away, it became clear that it wouldn’t be completely finished but Damn it! I was determined to get it there, so everyone put a push on right up to the me that we were ready to load it on the trailer and take it down there we Dusty and I were bol ng stuff on. I now faced the reality that it was not going to run yet as there was s ll a couple of small but important mechanical issues to deal with but the paint was done, it was for the most part, together Dusty had done his job well and she could at least look pre y in the booth running or not. So we borrowed a trailer from our pal Buff pushed it on and took her down to the Be er Living Building where we pushed her off and into posi on on the Astroturf rugs that we’d picked up at Home Depot on the way down to give the impression that we’d put a lot of thought into displaying the beast. We set up our usual bar unloaded The Mags and other essen als like stools and shit like that, got passes and parking passes for our crew and headed home. Beau was coming into town from the O awa area that day as well and he was bringing his display that he’d used at the O awa Show to supplement the stuff that we had to make what was to be an amazing display and I’d even got electricity in the booth to accommodate his addi on. As it turned out our booth had a big post in it that wouldn’t allow enough space for Beau’s stuff to go up and the idea

was scrubbed for this show. Show me! My usual crew of Peppermint Pa y and Sco showed up at my place and we headed into the big city and down to the CNE got parked and headed in to finish the set up before the Show opened. The Trike was a mess as it had been si ng in a carpentry shop over much of the Winter as Dusty completed the fantas c looking box and got it all on there, a ached the custom fenders, hooked up the stereo and got the lights mounted but not yet wired so even with blowing the dust off with the air hose it was far from clean and not even close to shiny.
I had brought along some cleaning products and microfiber cloths and Sco and I went at it and had her at least somewhat presentable before the doors opened. We had a corner booth with easy access to the beer garden and the washrooms and we also had some great neigh-

Now I have to tell you, when I spoke to organiser Carolyn at another Show and she promised me that they would have 50 in the beer garden I was a li le scep cal as I’ve tasted some pre y awful overpriced stuff that many
beer gardens have passed off as beer in the past. It was usually some draught-like swill that someone probably got a deal on out of the back of a white van in the parking lot. I’ve been OK with being able to se le for some other brands of domes c beer that I’d never buy on my own, s ll overpriced but at least it was real beer and not some slop that pours out of a spigot. But to have real 50 that was too much to hope for. When days before the show and I was talking to Bob on the phone he told me that he’d just got off the phone with the caterer and was assured there would be 50 in the beer garden, I was like a kid as Christmas approached hoping that Santa would deliver on the stuff that had been asked for. I hadn’t even asked (OK I might have whined a li le on rare occasions and dropped the odd hint.) for this. I had to
THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 13
National Motorcycleand Tattoo Show 2014 picking the bar with the pre"y bar tender (Be"er to be crushed by someone with a radiant smile and other a"ributes than some guy with an accent!) and asked for a 50. “Sure!” she said cheerfully her dazzling white teeth gleaming as she said it and she reached back into the cooler and extracted a nice cold 50! I was so happy I didn’t even flinch when she told me the price! Thank you Bob and Carolyn. I’m pu#ng your names forward for Sainthood or some other really cool $tle! It has been suggested that you really know how to pull the strings to get a decent write up,
be careful not to get my hopes up too high so as not to be too deflated if it turned out to be a cruel joke that Bob and Carolyn were playing to get back at me for something I’d written in the past! The moment of truth had arrived! I slowly entered the beer garden area and approached the bar

but I’m thinking you just wanted to be nice to an old man and stop the whining! So the show was off to an amazing start and I wandered about visi$ng here and there and checking things out. Art from A&K Recrea$on up in Coldwater was down with his usual huge selec$on of parts and bikes and seemed to be doing well as every $me I went by he was busy talking to someone. This is a swap meet and a lot of people wait for this show because the chances are real good that they will find the part or goody that they were looking for here. There are many mainstays new and used part dealers here and they come out year a*er year because it works and lots of people that come here come here to buy and that is the real purpose. Give them a spot where the two fac$ons can come together and it’s a good thing and that is what Bob And Carol have been doing for the past 33 years and they do it well. There are lots of top notch builders that come to this show to display their crea$ons and compete for cash, trophies and bragging rights. Shops like Motorcycle Enhancements, Quinn’s, Wildside, RNR, Fred Hale at Strictly V Twin, JD Cycles and Jason Parker to name just a few pull out all the stops and put their best out there. Compe$$on is $ght and they are out to win. There is something for everyone at this show and even some stuff that you didn’t expect to see like the huge snake
National Motorcycleand Tattoo Show 2014 crawling over a bike that I wasn’t prepared for that given my feelings about snakes didn’t thrill me but it posed for a picture so I got the shot and moved on trying to get the Goosebumps to die down. They had a great display of vintage bikes and of course Michael Walter was there with his monster Graveyard display to which he’s now added a casket and pyrotechnics and smoke that had that whole side of the building fogged in on occasion. There are not too many who put that much me, effort and showmanship into their displays and it is paying off for Michael as he does a lot of winning at all these shows. There were some really wild looking crea ons from some of the top builders in the country whose imagina on and crea vity knows no bounds. Airbrush ar sts, and fabricators, clothing, leather goods, t shirts or whatever if it is connected to motorcycles and if you needed or wanted to see it, chances are pre y good that you could find it there! In talking to others, vendors, builders and a endees I hear the same thing that this Show has a vibe, flavour and a feel all its own and that this is their favourite show. This seems like a show designed for the serious biker. It is really hard

friends throughout the day and with the large crew at the booth I was able to spend some me with them. I did wander through the Ta oo area just to take it in and
talk to some of the ar sts and check out the work. There was some real great looking work being done over there. Once again I had Lyne e who is a ta oo fana c herself do a separate piece on the Ta oo por on of the Show and I will once again run her ar cle as a companion piece to this
ar cle. JR didn’t show up un l late Saturday and I wanted to get his reac on to the Trike as he hadn’t seen it yet so consequently we didn’t get home un l late but we were back up bright and early the next morning as I had to pick up Sco and then head to Dusty and Jaye’s place to pick up Pa y and hook up Buffs trailer so I could bring the Trike back. We grabbed breakfast and made it to the show in good me which was just as well as we had to park way the Hell down in some distant parking lot as they wouldn’t let us in the other ones with the trailer. This is the day that I wander through get ng unclu ered pictures of the bikes and as Sundays are tradi onally slow to start and this held true again and I was able to get lots accomplished. I just wandered about and could take the me to talk awhile. I finally got to talk to Josh from JD Cycle as there was huge interest in his Mystery Trike Conversion kits and every me I stopped by he was talking to someone with others waiting their turn. I know I sent him a bunch of people that were impressed with my Trike. While on the subject of Trikes Len’s Automo ve in from beau ful downtown Jarvis had his usual top notch display of trikes and trike conversions and was causing quite a s r. The Rewaco in par cular had many talking especially some of the guys who used to run the Volkswagen trikes un l they could no longer get them insured. Len had researched these

Ryan from RNR also had a large area just crammed with parts and also some of Frank’s Magic Crops, Inc. his great looking bikes as did Fred Hale and they also seemed happy with the Show. It was good to see Dino out with Owner Frank Pastor Jr. all his treasures as well. Horticulturalist Class III U of T I had a couple of models who Over 35 Yrs. So now I had Mon. - Fri.: 11:00 - 6:00 to scramble. I made a bee line Saturday : 11:00 - 2:00 Closed Sunday for Motorcycle Enhancement’s booth and stole one of their models and I managed to scoop up one of the Canadian Ho es as well and got the job done. Sherri O Irish was also roaming the show, camera in hand and she E-mail : crops@cogeco.net also has her views of the show Tel. The Show was good, as usual but I’ve had so much on the go lately with the knee thing and then physio and trying to get the trike finished I was glad to be heading for home with the last major show of the year. The Trike went over really well and I can hardly wait to get out on it and actually deliver Mags in it. Great Show Guys! Thanks for the 50. See you next year!
Of Sailors, Bikers and Loose Women ~ the Art of Ta oo by Lyne e LaPerouse Wow ! Despite the long winter, this year flew by and I found myself once again at the 2014 Na onal Motorcycle and Ta oo Show. As I approached the ta ooo area, I was pleasantly surprized at how busy it was. There were many ar sts, lots of people ge ng ta ooed, and many milling about, curious and watching. The buzz of ta oo guns and the smell of green soap, was enough to make me consider ge ng another ta oo ! The demographics were all well represented, from geographical loca on, to age and gender ! This year there were thirteen shops represented. ( The Twisted Doll ~ Sudbury, Total Coverage Ink ~ Hamilton, Suspiria ~ ?, Ta z and Company ~ Hamilton, All That Remains ~ Orangeville, With Trust and Faith Ink ~ Kitchener, Golden Ta oo Parlour Inc ~ Brampton, Blugod ~ Toronto, Yonge St Ta oos ~ Toronto, Skintricate Ta oo Company ~ Streetsville, Addicted Ta oos ~ Woodbridge, I n k e d Impressions ~ Port Perry, and the Big Kahuna Ta Shack ~ www.rnrcustomcycle.com Burlington.) I talked briefly to Hugh Bastard, he had come up with some unique designs as “show specials”; and as we cha ed, a lovely lady selected one for herself, careful to make sure it would be ‘the only one’, and Hugh assured her once he ta ooed the design, it was gone from his offerings, making it a truly one of a kind piece of art. As it should be ! I must take a brief moment to thank all of the shops and ar sts that were able to take the me to chat with me, I understand you were all very busy, and your me was much appreciated. They say there are two kinds of people ~ those who are ta ooed and those who aren’t....falling into the first category myself, I was curious as to why other people choose to get ta ooed. Myself, my ta oos are like my journal ~ they mark life events, births, deaths, achievements, as well as a couple represn ng my First Na on’s heritage and spirituality.
I found I am not alone in this ~ most of the people I ques oned told me I could tell something about them and their background just by looking at thier ta oos. Ta oo lovers are a proud lot ! Most people were eager to show me their ta oos and explain why they got them. I think it is a very brave thing to consciously make the decision to make a permanent mark on your body ~ most are ordinary people with a strong sense of iden ty; and not afraid of public opinion. (although that in itself is changing ~ ta oos are now the mark of the twenty first century; over 25% of people under 30 are ta ooed ! ). Of the people I quizzed at the show here are the most common responses I got to the “Why get a ta oo? “ ques on. * to honour and memorialize a loved one ~ living or dead * to commenorate important life events (a badge of honour as one well ta ooed gentleman said of his piece marking a big life-change) * fun / personal expression * to iden fy with a group, such as club ta oos, and those of military,

National Motorcycleand Tattoo Show 2014 represen ng service or patrio sm * spiritual and religious reasons * a very honest young lady told me it was to get no ced, and I also had one person men on endorphins and the pain associated with pleasure. Good ta oos aren’t cheap. Cheap ta oos aren’t good (so think before you ink!) I thought I’d give some advice to those of you who may not be ta ooed yet, but are considering it....although a spontaneous trip to the ta oo shop might be great fun, research and a plan are most important. Get reccomenda ons from your ta ooed friends; but check it out yourself. I advise visi ng more than one shop ~ make sure they are clean, welcoming, and check out por olios. Ge ng a ta oo, for me, is as much about the experience, as it is the end result. I love that I can browse the internet, and search out ar sts who specialize in what I am interested in. I would never get ta ooed in a shop I felt wasn’t spic and span, or where I felt uncomfortable. I make my health a primary concern, and the state of a shop and the ar sts themselves may reflect hygiene habits. Once I have decided on a shop/ ar st, I book a consulta on. At this me I ask about apprenticeships and training. I make sure the ar st’s special es match my needs; looking for someone who is geniunely interested in the style I desire. This is also when I find out if the ar st and I “jive” and that we share the same vision. A deposit is o"en required, which will be applied to the total cost of your ta oo. I also ask for an ‘es mate’ at this me, so I know what to expect. For some of my larger pieces, I have go en the outline first, and returned in a couple of weeks to have it completed. Now your appointment is booked, all you have to do is show up (early is good). I try to wear clothing that won’t get in the ta ooists way and I try to make sure I had a goodnight of sleep the night before. (a clear head ).Your ar st should have some drawings prepared for you ~ don’t be afraid to ask for changes ! Don’t drink alcohol before your session, although some think it is liquid courage, it can also have detrimental effects on your experience (including bleeding more !) A
stencil will be made up and placed on your body, look in the mirror, make sure it is placed where you want it, and as crazy as it sounds, check for things like spelling mistakes. Cost should never be a considera on. Your ta oo is a long term investment. Some ar sts will give you a flat rate for a piece, but most charge by the hour. Either way, I don’t look at cost, I look at quality. Like pre y much everything in this world, you get what you pay for ! A"ercare instruc ons should be provided to you. Follow them exactly. Your new ta oo is really a big injury to your skin, and care and cleaning are impera ve to the healing process. Oh, and just like any other service, you should p your ar st ! I am told that the more support the Rider’s Mag gets from the ta oo sector, the more I can write. Shops, perhaps you would consider adver sing, and ta oo afficianados, let the mag know you’d like to see more ! I am up for it if you are ! Keep Ontario Beau ful ~ Get Ta ooed ! Un l next me, Lyne e

APATHY – a disease of the psyche which surfaces every elec on year. Voter turnout during the last elec on was below 50%, a disgraceful sta s c when you examine the big board and read reports of ci zens across the globe that face possible death in order to express their opinion via a democra c elec on. Now that’s what I call expressing purpose to a cause, Eh Ollie? The Ontario Confedera on of Motorcycle Clubs is working to illuminate and change other discriminatory prac ces foisted on our lifestyle by either direct inten on or complete indifference but they are the ba"les of the future – the HOV issue is winnable but only if we work to change the current government by vo ng for the PC candidate in your provincial riding. Not sure who is your candidate? Visit www.ontariopc. com/team for a complete rundown by regions. This month’s feature OCC member club is the Risen Dead M.C. - Steeltown Chapter. The club is located in Hamilton, Ontario and joined the O.C.C during the first quarter of 2014. The Risen Dead M.C. Mother Chapter is located in Houston, Texas. In addi on to the two aforemen oned chapters, the Risen Dead M.C. also has seven (7) ac ve chapters in the United States and one chapter located in Bri sh Columbia. The club is based on tradi onal M.C. values and their Mo"o is: ”I AM MY BROTHER’S KEEPER”. Risen Dead M.C. is a proud suppor ng member club of the Ontario Confedera on of Motorcycle Clubs and interested par es seeking more info about Risen Dead M.C. - Steeltown should contact storm@ risendeadmc.com . Website address is www.risendeadmc. com. By the me you read this issue, we should be well into our mission to oust the bloodsuckers from power. I have grown weary and sickened by the an cs of those unethical fools that squander the public trust in order to further their ambi ons. McGuinty, who is famous for being dishonorable, did the honorable thing and exited poli cs in disgrace - an act of contri on that most Ontario Liberal poli cians need to follow if we are to have a provincial government free of corrup on. On Thursday, June 12th – let’s fumigate Queens Park by exercising our biker rights and vote this mess out of office. Scary Larry treasurer@ 4859 Hillside Dr. Beamsville occ4u.org
Corrupt – Arrogant - Unscrupulous – Inept These are but a few of many adjec ves used by the press, and the opposi on, to describe the current Ontario Liberal government. IMHO, their descrip ve rhetoric falls far quite short of the reality (read destruc on) the Liberal machine has foisted upon the ci zens of Ontario. As you are probably aware, the long list of debacles and boondoggles created by the Ontario Liberals, in over a decade of fri"ering away our future, is well documented - so I will not slow the pace of this ar cle by repea ng them here. No doubt, we will hear plenty of examples during the campaign leading up to June 12th. And rightly so, Eh Ollie? No-sir-reee-bob, my rant herein is more grassroots and pertaining to our lifestyle and what we, as bikers in Ontario, deserve from our provincial representa ves. For quite a few years, the Ontario Confedera on of Motorcycle Clubs has been lobbying the Liberal government to change the High Occupancy Vehicle rules to accommodate two-wheeled single rider access. A move supported by almost everyone EXCEPT the current si&ng government. Premier Wynn, back when she was Minister of Transporta on, allowed the OCC execu ve an audience, which was convened (we thought) to explore the possibility of single rider access but it was merely another arrogant Liberal PR move, which wasted our me and resources. In sharp contrast, the Progressive Conserva ve party has gone on record (with the OCC) that they will change the current HOV rules should they form the next provincial government. Sooooo, here’s the dumbass ques!on; who deserves your biker vote?? ELECTIONS! To most it is an opera on in fu lity but regardless of pre-conceived no ons, it is the only available and viable method for us ordinary minions to express our dissa sfac on with the way the front office is minding the store. VOTING – to most of the populace it’s an act without consequences (except another night of shi"y TV) but in order to make change – you must exercise your right (and the devil knows that as bikers - we ain’t got but a few) and drag yur ass out of the Lazy Boy and vote on June 12th.

On The Holy shit can you believe that summer is only a few short weeks away? What be er way to start summer than with a Friday the 13th, yup its Friday the 13th again. Gratefully it’s another warm weather one and it is the only one on the calendar this year so hopefully its early enough that we can avoid flip flop na on and a lot of plaid shorts but who knows. Right? We here at the mag have a long tradi on started way back in 1999 of giving away event shirt to the girls who flash their ts for us and Cri er has both men’s and ladies shirts again for this year’s event although he didn’t get any specific “I bared my boobs and all I got with this lousy shirt” shirts for the ladies which we found was always a popular item at Friday the 13th and a lot of other events that we were involved in. So ladies we do have Friday the 13th 2014 ladies t’s and I do have an ever dwindling supply of some of the original ladies shirts with that famous slogan on them, of course the remaining shirts are dated from 2012 and before as they were from our tenure as the management of the mag and I do ask for them each year and cri er says he’s working on it but he has a lot on his plate and does not always have me to seek out those special sponsors who wanna put their name on these special ladies shirts, so I am making an appeal to all our awesome adver sers out there who support the mag, it’s not a lot of dough and we usually only print a few hundred so for future years if you are interested contact Cri er or even contact me, Jr. Publisher emeritus at theridersmag@gmail. com I will be hanging out where I always hang out at my blue road glide ultra in the middle of main street in front of the Royal Bank, it’s the same spot I have been working for the past decade or so and it’s a great spot for me cause I can keep an eye on Sr. he’s slowin down a bit in his eigh es but he wouldn’t miss it for anything in the world, I am not sure if it keeps him young but it keeps him alive for sure, see you there ladies all Friday a!ernoon, I’ll have some of them old

shirts hanging off my tour pack and windshield. For the guys, if I spot you wearing a Rider’s Mag t-shirt of any sort, support or event while I’m out there I will toss you a guy’s t-shirt of course to show your support you can bring us an old mag, older than this one, ok? And we will exchange that for an event shirt, we have always said someday all the bikers will be wearing Rider’s Mag shirts at the event, of course not including flip flop na on and the plaid shorts gang. Alright there’s always a ton of great events going on and I know the Red Devils have their annual show and shine at the house in June usually the week before father’s day so check it out and all the other awesome events that go on every weekend in Ontario, you can find em all in the What’s Shakin’ sec on of the mag which I see is now new and improved, check out. I am on top of the feature shoots for the me being and as a road warrior we are always heading out to get a few more bikes done, I have a few bikes in the Toronto area and am looking for some more east of the city as we are planning another trip out that way again this year to pick up all the eastern Ontario rides both men and ladies, we are accep ng all classes of American V-twins at this me, we will do some local day trips through both the Niagara region and the Tri city area and there may be another trip out Windsor way later this summer, for sure next spring. As long as the mag is rolling we need you readers to show your support to both the mag by ge#ng your bikes featured, telling all the adver sers you patronize that you saw their ad in the mag and same goes for the events you a end, tell em “You saw it in the Mag” thanks to all for your support of the mag for be er than a decade and a half now and here’s to another couple of decades right? See you out there, on the road

Joke A blonde gets home from work early and hears strange noises coming from the bedroom. She rushes upstairs only to find her husband naked lying on the bed, swea ng and pan ng. ‘What’s up?’ she asks. ‘I think I’m having a heart a ack,’ cries the husband. The blonde rushes downstairs to grab the phone, but just as she’s dialing, her four-year-old son comes up and says, ‘Mommy, Mommy, Aunty Shirley is hiding in the closet and she has no clothes on.’ The blonde slams the phone down and storms back upstairs into the bedroom right past her husband. She rips open the closet door and sure enough, there is her sister, totally naked and cowering on the floor. ‘You ro en Witch’, she screams. ‘My husband’s having a heart a ack, and you’re running around naked playing hide and seek with the kids!’ Two old drunks are si ng in a bar when the first one says, “Ya know, when I was thirty and got an erec on, I couldn’t bend it, even using both hands. By the me I was forty, I could bend it about ten degrees, if I tried really hard. By the me I was fi y, I could bend it about forty five degrees, no problem. I’m gonna be sixty next week, and now I can bend it in half with just one hand.” At a dinner party, several of the guests were arguing whether men or women were more trustworthy. “No woman,” said one man, scornfully, “can keep a secret.”

“I don’t know about that,” huffily answered a woman guest. “I have kept my age a secret since I was twenty-one.” “You’ll let it out some day,” the man insisted. “I hardly think so!” responded the lady. Continued on Page 61

The Force From the Forest City The winter of 2013/14 was the most brutal, bi er cold season I can remember. Even the spring gave us false hopes with occasional nice days followed by more snow and cold but we have learned to make the best of it and get the bikes out again. Even cold days can be good to blow the cob webs out by blas ng down the beau ful highways and byways of this lovely province. The season started with the annual on the road par es, some of which included rides in the cold rain, but that’s s ll way be er than si!ng inside cursing the snow. Even some of the demo rides, like the one at Rocky’s, had gloomy days but we s ll enjoy them. The new bikes look be er in the sun, of course, but the new models look great in any weather. Everyone gets busy preparing for the season. Dealers and shops have their open houses to display the bikes and accessories they have to offer like Hogtown cycles in the heart of Lucan. Always a selec on of pre-owned bikes and good to deal with. Phil Dickson, of PDRestora on is also busy, not just with new res and brakes, but top notch mechanical and performance work. Some of this includes accident repairs too, unfortunately. May is motorcycle awareness month, we are out on the road again. Could someone explain to me why we seem invisible to the average motorist, yet our boys in blue can spot us from miles away. This had been a sad week with the loss of Dave “Dusty” Howard, long me Abate member and friends to many. The number of people represen ng many different clubs and independent riders showed the respect he had earned as a member of the motorcycle community. The very next day, Rick Smiley” Bigg, a founding member of Phan-

tom Thunder MC and dear brother of mine, passed away as a result of a very aggressive cancer. He had been suffering from Parkinson’s for years so of course any illness was blamed on that disease. No one expected cancer to raise its ugly head. By the me he was diagnosed it had already reached stage four and we were forced to watch our brother quickly fade and pass away. The funeral arrangements are under way now and this Friday we lay him to rest. Many thanks for the outpouring of love and respect from so many people and other clubs, and the help offered by all. Pastor Graeme Morrison of Heaven’s Saints Motorcycle Ministry will conduct the ceremony and George Winney, Forever Free Motorcycle Hearse will carry him on his last ride. Iron Sirens, riding club for chicks, offered to provide the lunch for his recep on at the eagles club, here in the Forest City. Sorry to leave you on such a sad note but I will try to a end as many events in the London area over the next months and make note of them in this column. If you have any events that you or your club would like to have a Rider’s Mag rep a end, contact me and I will try to be there. Un l then, ride carefully, rubber side down, and we’ll see you in the wind. Steve “Lightning” Force.
Jason Parker Race Cars June 2014 Builder/ Shop of the Month Jason Parker Race Cars is not your typical motorcycle shop by any defini on and owner Jason Parker also defies defini on and that is evident from the moment you pull up in front of his store in an industrial unit on Ward Rd. in Brampton and see the line of vintage cars, trucks and vans that are waiting for Jason’s crea ve touch to start their journey to restora on. This just isn’t at all what you’d expect to see outside of a motorcycle shop let alone, one that is up for The Riders Mag shop/ builder of the Month, but walk through the front door past the row of complete Panhead and shovelhead motors that stand proudly like strong but silent sentries along the floor in front of walls that are festooned by a large gallery of pictures of bikes and celebri es, posters and magazine racks and such that leads you to the front office that features a trio of knuckleheads all si#ng in a neat row in their stands beside yet a couple more panheads along the one wall. That is a first rate conversa on starter if I ever saw one. Then just try to take in all the bikes, bike parts and chrome goodies that are standing or piled up, hung up or leaning everywhere you look, that, along with tons of memorabilia, trophies, pictures and posters and you soon get the idea that this is one serious motorcycle shop the like of which you may never have been in before or may never see again. It would take hours to take in just what was in these two areas alone, let alone for me describe it accurately! Then you enter the spacious shop area and the adventure con nues. The place is packed with bikes! All kinds of bikes, everything, Indian, Triumph, Harley-Davidson, Honda, all vintage and in different stages of assembly or disassembly but they are all incredible and it is very evident where Jason’s interests and passion lies. Then you no ce the Corve e race car project and the rack full of high performance car motors, blowers and
other high performance car stuff just in front of that, and if you look up in the ra ers you spot a slingshot dragster just hanging there and you are back wondering again. Bike shop or Hot rod Shop? Car guy or Motorcycle guy? Well stop trying to pigeon hole him! As I said at the out-set of this ar cle, this is not your typical anything and Jason is about as far from being a typical guy or one trick pony as you can get. Just enjoy the experience. Upstairs in the lo also is crammed full of bikes, parts of bikes, bike parts a table full of panheads and a rack full of original H-D frames and tons of motorcycle items that many would kill for, were strewn about in no apparent or specific order. The walls here are also covered with vintage posters from bygone years, pictures, pain ngs and murals. There are many bike li s sca ered throughout the large shop and there were motorcycles on every one of them. Jason’s whole family was into motorcycles and he developed a passion for them at an early age, riding dirt bikes and hanging around hard core bikers set the hook. One biker in par cular took an interest in Jason and he had a real posi ve influence on him and steered his interest towards cars and staying out of trouble. He became part of the Street racing scene that was quite prevalent in the Brampton area at that me and in 1990, at the ripe old age of 17, decided to open a shop up that way where the ac on was and the rent was cheap. Here he honed his skills, building hot rods, racing cars and kick ass engines, and learning as he went by picking up what pointers he could from old pros, veteran racers and other car buffs but basically he learned on his own and took the ini a ve to take it to another level. He learned how to weld and had a natural ap tude for it as well as with mechanical work and machining and wasn’t in midated by anything. There was nothing he wouldn’t tackle and there was nothing that would keep him from comple ng the jobs he

Jason Parker Race Cars June 2014 Builder/ Shop of the Month started. His love of motorcycles was s ll strong and he decided to scratch-build his first ever from the ground up motorcycle project in 1998 star ng with just a set of cases and a tranny and put together a fabulous black 1960 Harley-Davidson Panhead that he s ll owns and rides regularly. Jason earned and learned the hard way and on his own, through experience and he picked up ps along the way from conversa ons with some of the best motorcycle mechanics around and other sources of informa on but mostly he just made sure he had a full understanding of what he wanted to do and how best to do it before he did it and then, just did it. He had soon built a well-deserved reputa on of his own, as someone who knew what he was doing and someone who does it right. His skill at welding soon saw other shops sending him the work that they didn’t want to tackle and as the work increased his shop and equipment either was upgraded or expanded to keep pace and more specialized machines and tools became part of his arsenal as need, availability and affordability dictated and soon a complete machine shop had materialized. He would work on anything from welding aluminum heads to custom fabrica on of parts, building frames and such and the work kept coming. He does everything in house other than paint and chrome. His major influence was the work of the old Masters of the fine art of chopper building that sprang from the pages of his massive collec on of “Chopper Magazines” (He has the very 1st edi on of “Chopper”.) and has stayed true to that! These strong influences fanned the flames and turned his mere passion into a full blown addic on he hasn’t been the same since! Jason can’t be bothered with the tacky imagery of Bikers that is presented on TV and movies or those people who were mostly preten ous and wanted to create or portray an image that is mostly in genuine. He doesn’t have the me or the inclina on to indulge in that crap! Jason is also a firm believer in the adage that “All that gli ers is not gold!” and at his shop it isn’t about gleaming chrome and paint and razzle dazzle but hard core, well-built bikes that will get you there and bring you back in style……… old style! He is a motorcycle purist and concentrates mainly on vintage bikes and doing quality custom stuff and stays true to a style of motorcycle that was popular back in the six es, seven es and eigh es (An Era that predates him but s ll captured his heart and soul.) and those bikes are once again catching the interest of an ever-growing group of younger bikers made up largely of skateboarders who are transi oning from skateboards to motorcycles and just love these simple, kick-start beau es that go like s nk that Jason epitomizes. He and they are part of “The Chopper Culture” something that never went away but was somewhat obscured and ignored by the “Latest and Greatest” and that suits him and
THE RIDERS MAG ---- PAGE 34
them just fine as they are totally comfortable in their own skin with their simplis c, minimalis c, motorcycles that truly reflects who they are. You want to know what someone is really like. Check out their motorcycle. His bikes and his style has earned him World-wide recogni on as dozens of magazines from the United States and other countries from around the globe have taken no ce of him and his crea ons and featured him and his bikes in their publica ons. I was proud as Hell when he agreed to do this feature as it is about me that we realize an recognize that we have someone of his calibre right here in our back yard and he is doing remarkable things and pu ng Canada and the GTA on the map when it comes to “Old Skool Skooters”. Jason is also involved in an event that is picking up steam and gathering a huge following. The “Soul Seekers” event/ Show and Shine, that he and friend Lyndsey Wes"all put together that started out as an underground thing held at a skateboard shop in Toronto’s downtown district that quickly gained recogni on, respect and sponsors that includes Harley-Davidson. The event combines artwork and photography with motorcycles and has established itself as a mainstay and developed a huge following that is s ll growing and is not going anywhere but up! Jason led me to yet another space in his shop that was chock full of tanks, seats, frames, handlebars, drag bikes and so many parts that just boggled my mind and le# me speechless. He loves and treasures each and every part that he has in his shop and can tell you where any item is at any given moment. To a true motorcycle lover, this is normal so if you’re looking for something about Jason that is typical when compared to others of his ilk that is as close as you’re going to get to being typical. It is the apples and oranges thing. It was an honour and a privilege to hang out in his shop for the a#ernoon and just be around so much motorcycle history. If you are looking a bou que style shop or you’re looking for the latest chrome, high tech, trinket or goodie, or cosmetic touch that will make your buddies drool then this probably isn’t the shop for you. If you are looking for motor clothes, boots, helmets or fashion items, this definitely aint the place for you! But if you appreciate a motorcycle for what it truly is and the parts that go on them as the rare treasures they are, the way that Jason does or you want to talk to someone who will give you straight forward answers on building a bike that doesn’t have to be anything more than the best bike of its kind that it can be, this is the place! If you want to custom make a part or are having trouble finding a part for a vintage bike or you want to get your (anything from a shovelhead on down) running to its op mum check him out Drop by and see him some me when you feel the need to be dazzled but not by flashy paint jobs and super sparkling chrome. There is dust here and under the dust…..There be treasure here! jasonparkerracecars.com – Instagram - panheads_forever

E-Bay Bomber
This month’s feature guy is Eric from Sherkston, when I put out the call for a sportster he stepped right up with his E-Bay Bomber. Eric said he built this bike because he could and he did it all on e-bay on the cheap. He did spend about ten grand on beer pu ng it all together with a li le help from his friends and family and he also wanted a shout out to Jim over at the Eagles Nest who helped him out with the stuff he couldn’t find on eBay. Eric says he grew up in Thorold and at a very early age he bought himself a dirt bike which he rode constantly and of course the dirt bike got traded for a dual street trail type bike and he went on from there saying that he figures that this is about number 30 for him. His brother Carl was on hand as well and said that what he really was a er was to recreate a bike that he owned d e c a d e s earlier and sold to Carl so that he could buy his first house. If you can
THE RIDERS MAG ---- PAGE 36
sell a bike to buy a house that’s a hell of a deal and you should do that, especially if you have a growing family I can’t see how you could go wrong in that deal. Despite his protesta ons and denials he did say that when he came upon this mostly stock 1979 ironhead sporty on local web sales place Kijiji for $1500 bucks not running, his first thought was that it had the same frame as his old 1000cc cafe racer sportster and the only other Harley that he had ever owned.
E-Bay Bomber
When he went to take an up close and personal look at the bike and saw that it had new res. Eric figured well what the hell if the bike has new res it had to have run at some point and the guy who was selling it had a bad back and could not ride it nor could he get it started so to him it was ge!ng an old ironhead out of his garage and pu!ng a bit of dough in his pocket. Eric is a licensed mechanic and has worked in auto shop garages and does a lot of wrenching on his own vehicles and of course his bikes, his wife’s bike, and other family members so he does keep himself busy with work on the family fleet. He spend 3 years collec ng up the parts on eBay for this build saying that it just took some pa ence to ensure that he found not only the right pieces for the build he had in mind but also the cheapest pieces saying that this was the ul mate low budget build. When he brought the bike back to his place not being a runner he tore it down to see why it wasn’t running and he says that other than a lack of use and a total lack of care most of the pieces looked func onal although he felt that some of the stuff should be removed and replaced. He was in there anyway saying that he is not an expert on all things Harley but being a licensed mechanic he had an idea of what he was looking at and what the tolerances were and he set about buying some engine parts, mostly on e-bay as well as mirrors, forks, calipers and rotors. He picked up a complete set of pistons, rings, cylinders and wrist pins for about $400 had a new gasket set and replaced some of the stuff in the top end, valves keepers, and rockers picking up pushrods and li er blocks on eBay as well. He says that he le the bo om end and crank in place as it seemed to be in good condi on replacing most of the bearings above it installing a new oil pump making all new copper lines which he tried to hide or paint black (you can see it’s a theme) replaced the carb, added a sponge airfilter and
covered it over with a metal dog dish painted back. The forks were brand new 1979 Harley picked up for less than a hundred bucks and a new rotor and caliper on that newish wheel and re that came with the bike, he said that he was riding a 1980 Kawasaki when he started this project and the headlight and fairing came off that bike to complete the look that he was going for. The pipes were le over parts from his old 1000cc cafe bike modified into a 2 into one with a super trap muffler clamped onto the back of it, he removed the kick starter as it did not fit in with the look that he was going for not to men on it was in the way with some of the other modifica ons that he wanted on the bike. He has the gear shi er on backwards changing the shirt pa ern to up followed by down, he loved the pegs on his old Harley and during the build which was completed 3 years ago his brother s ll had the bike si!ng at his place and Eric would go over and grab pieces so he could copy the design returning the originals to the bike. Eric says that a er all his years of riding he has never really ever taken a really long ride but he says that if he ever has the opportunity to do so that he would like to take a month
and a half and ride Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles and back saying that he has heard you can do the full tourist thing in about 3 weeks each way but that he would have to have himself a more comfortable touring style bike to do it cause this one here is not designed towards comfort. He does enjoy taking 4 or 5 hour rides around Niagara saying that the parkway from the Sherkston area where he lives to Niagara on the lake and back takes him about 4 hours or so and says it’s a really nice day ride with his friends or wife when the weather is nice. He says that organized rides mostly start a long ways from where he lives and he can’t get started early enough to make it so he finds his own amusement. He does enjoy Friday the 13th and has a ended every warm weather event for many years now and has ridden the e-bay bomber to the past few and he expects to ride into town this June so look for him out there. Eric says that he is kicking around the idea of finding a sidecar to install onto this bike, he says one that was like the old military bike we featured a few years back would be perfect for his old sportster, when I asked him if you could even put a sidecar on a sportster he said that the first me he saw his old 1000cc cafe racer it had a sidecar on it, hmmm look out for him.

Acts 9:10-20- Being Used: Don’t Let it Slip Thru Your Fingers People can find excuses to jus fy whatever it is they want to do. They can blame it on their feelings, their health, their job. Even in the church or out of church. It’s amazing what we try to get away with and give God the blame or credit for it whether we believe or not. Today I want to take a story out of our Life’s Manual, we will meet a man who is an unsung hero in the New Testament, because in the end he ignored all excuses and obeyed God anyway. His name is Ananias, Acts 9:10-20. Ananias is only found in Acts 9, but he plays an important part in the history of the church. God used this man to help bring Saul the persecutor into the church. Saul had just met Jesus, but knowing the Lord isn’t enough. God wants people in the church as well. It’s not that the church will save anyone, but the church is God’s tool to save the world. You know, we all struggle with the ques on: am I useful? Does this ma er? Am I important? Is the world a be er place with me? Yet so many just stop with those ques ons, and never do anything about the answers. Even among church folk: we will no ce problems, but expect someone else to be the solu on. Meanwhile, the incredible privilege to be used to bring someone to the place where they need to be. A good friend called them “divine appointments”. It’s that moment that if you know you were born for. It’s that moment that if Jesus comes tomorrow, you could say, “It’s OK. I know you’ll say well done, because I just did well.” Ananias did not let that divine moment slip through his fingers. He was there, and God used him to change the world. So who was Ananias? And what did he do to be used by God? Three things about Ananias’ character that will help us be used by God, too: 1) Ananias was listening to God’s voice (v10-12). This man was in prayer. Now, most of the me we spend in prayer is talking. Telling God all about our days, our problems, our concerns, our fears, our family and so on. Now, there’s nothing wrong with that. Voicing it some mes helps us put it into perspec ve. But you know, God already knows all about it. Think about it: we have the privilege of spending me with the Almighty and All-Knowing God of the universe, and we spend so much of it telling Him what He already knows. Yes, it’s easier to talk than to listen. Just ask any kindergarten group. But you don’t learn anything when you’re talking. You only learn when you’re listening. Ananias knew how to recognize God’s voice, to the point that when God spoke, Ananias was able to say, “Yes, Lord.” He knew God’s voice so well that He knew when the Almighty spoke to him. Folks, it takes me to learn to recognize God’s voice. It takes prac ce. It doesn’t come in one si ng. It comes as a process. Wai ng, being silent. Taking me to hear if the Lord wants to let you in on something you don’t already know. Perhaps you know the story of Elijah. He was the prophet of the OT who had just won a major victory over the forces of evil. Except that when he did, the evil queen Jezebel put out a bounty on his head: You will die, mark my words. So Elijah ran and ran and ran. Actually, more like, he walked and moped and dragged his feet. He sat under a tree and wished for death to find him. Then God showed up. God said, I’m going to speak to you. Listen for it. A huge windstorm came, and God’s voice was not in it. Then an earthquake ripped the land apart, and God’s
Bikers Church voice wasn’t in that either. Finally, a great fire swept across the land, but God’s voice wasn’t in that either. At last, Elijah just heard a s ll small voice, and He knew that God was s ll with him. It’s awful hard to hear God’s voice in the hardships of life or in the hustle and bustle of our busy world. But God wants to teach you to hear His voice in the quiet places that you need to forge out of your me. When you learn to hear His voice, then you’ll hear it next me you get into a windstorm or an earthquake, because you’ll know what it sounds like. You won’t find me, as if it’s wai ng to be found. You have to make me; you have to take me. But when you do, and the Lord whispers just small things in your mind, then you’ll recognize His voice when the wind and the waves surround you. 2) Ananias was loyal to God’s direc ons (v13-16). Even though Ananias had his concerns and doubts about following the Lord’s direc ons, he s ll did it. Folks, there’s one thing to hear God’s voice, but there’s another thing to obey it. God’s voice o en comes as, “This is wrong. Stop now.” But stopping is another thing altogether. But for Ananias, had oberience, despite fears and ques ons about the mission. What about you? If God told you to do something hard, would you a) figure it wasn’t of God? b) delay doing it? c) come up with excuses why you can’t or shouldn’t? or d) just do it? How you answer that quiz reveals if you put your trust in God or in yourself and your own abili es (or lack of them). 3) Ananias was loving to God’s people (v17-19). Once Ananias decided to go, he went well. He even called Saul his “brother”, a term used in affec on for others. He heard God’s voice, he was obedient to it, and thus he showed love to someone who wanted to kill him or throw him in jail. That’s a powerful tes mony of how God really had a hold of Ananias’ heart. Could it be that God might want to speak to you about helping other people get connected? We’ve had a lot of new people over the last few months. Do you know their names? Do you know their kids’ names? Do they know your names? If a guest were to base his or her whole visit on how well you treated them, would they come back, or would they think we were all snobby? Learning to hear God’s voice is not just for our own benefit. God speaks to us so that we can be part of His plans to reconnect the lost people of the world to Him. It’s not so we can sit on shelves and be trophies; it’s so we can be used to help others find Him. And you know, as far as Ananias’ quali es go, not one of them is based on ability. Every one of is based on availability. We don’t know what Ananias could or could not do well. But we do know that He was available for God’s purposes, no excuses. Reader’s Digest carried this story in 1996: A friend o en told me about the problems he had ge ng his son to clean his room. God’s greatest privileges and blessings go to those who learn the same thing. Hearing Him, obeying Him, loving others. No excuses. Pastor Dave kawartha@bikerschurch.com

I leave for the 5 ½ hour flight to Panama City, Panama. Flying at 38000’ on a cloudless day, I can clearly see the ground/water most of the way. The plane flies the whole coast of Florida. The 7-members have a clubhouse on the beach, so I will spend a few days with them un!l I travel to Brazil. My traveling partner is Paul from Oshawa. He leaves on a different flight. I arrive in Montevideo just a$er midnight. Paul and our new prospec!ve friends pick me up. Paul from the Schwa: The Blue Pill I am going to fast forward to Buenos Aries, Argen!na, about 10 days later. The reader needs to get a flavor of Paul. For those of you who know Oshawa (The Schwa), it is a gri%y, working class city. One does not associate sensi!vity or sophis!ca!on with the Schwa. Fists and not debate usually resolve disagreements in The Schwa. Paul and I walk the downtown core, I here singing to my side. Paul is singing Yoko and John (Lennon). What the fuck? Paul wants to walk in the shade, I want the sun, Paul’s skin is sensi!ve to the sun! Out comes the sun screen. However, the sun screen conflicts with his skin lo!on ...are you kidding me? “I have dry skin; don’t you Don?” “I don’t know”, says I, “I haven’t really thought about it” Now, the hot sun is making his hair gel uncomfortable!!!!! Hair gel? I ask Paul if he is really from the Schwa? We stop for a coffee in a deligh'ul sidewalk Bistro overlooking the Buenos Aries harbour...well, of course, Paul drinks tea. I didn’t know you could buy tea in the Schwa! Paul casually pops a blue pill; THE blue pill?????????????? It is 11 in the morning. What? Why? “Want one, Don?” “No.” There are girls everywhere. “Don, you just never know what is going to You Pay us come NOTHING unless no fee Guarantee ready”along and walk into your life. Riding that although money is a problem, their spirit and dedication to the biker lifestyle is not. T h e Clubhouse Private Beach The beach in front of the clubhouse goes forever and is deserted. A private beach for any who wish to partake. Between the houses and the beach are rolling sand dunes to ensure complete privacy from the world. I think we are on the ocean but my friends tell me the ocean is 130 kilometers downriver. This is the River Plata but it seems like ocean because of the waves and one cannot see the other side. Ocean going freighters dot the water. The seasons are opposite here. It is fall here in March and winter approaches. The coldest it ever gets is -2C and it never snows. Summer is 30C. We are way south of the equator (2000 km south of the Tropic of Capricorn) so it is not hot like Panama, which is a long way north and west. Paul likes walking as do I. I ask again if he is really from the Schwa? He confesses and tells me he grew up in London. We walk the beach in the morning. Our prospec!ve friends, Sebas!on and Jose’ want to walk behind us in case of problems. We say no. I can tell they are not walkers. Paul and I walk about 10 km on the clean, li"er free sand, my feet splashing in the surf. We are alone. The beach is pris!ne and desolate. Paul looks back and thinks he can see some people in the distance in the dunes. As we return, we see the boys. They have been following us to make sure we are safe. I can also tell they are very happy we didn’t keep walking. This has been tough on them. We look for our spot to exit the beach through the

I did not ask why since there were no people on the beach to steal them. We are lost as the rolling sand dunes all begin to look alike. Being lost here is a pleasurable experience, preferable to the slums I usually seem to wind up in. Finally, we exit through the dunes to the road. The boys knew which way to walk once there. Downtown We head downtown. Montevideo is a sprawling low rise city on the massive River Plata. The old sec!on has interes!ng historical buildings and cool restaurants. Food is cooked on hardwood charcoal. The charcoal is made at the back of the huge barbeque grates. I have beef tenderloin, grilled sweet potatoes and peppers. An!bio!c/steroid/chemically ar!ficially made beef in Canada may well be more tender and tasty than its purer counterparts in Uruguay, Argen!na, or Brazil. I like the beef here be"er because I know it is be"er for me. Are you fucking kidding Me? We decided in Toronto to book our internal South

Riding American travels locally. This was a bit of a mistake. It is Easter week. These Catholic countries take their religion very seriously. Much work stops for holidays. Many travel to spend me with family and friends. This means there are not many available seats on planes or buses. Buses? Buses in South America? This brings stereotypical visions of cliffs, accidents, and sharing seats with chickens. Our Visa to get into Argen na is good for one visit. Yeah, so what? I am only going there once this trip ...or am I? The third problem is that there is going to be a one day strike in Buenos Aries, what day, no one is really sure. The city of 12 million people will stop dead. We have many friends flying in from all over the world and more riding in from all over South America for our annual party that changes loca on each year. No one will be able to move. Our Uruguayan friends help us book a short flight to Porto Allegre Brazil for the Na onal Brazilian Bike Run. There are only a few seats le$. Importantly, the flight is not direct. We must fly further away to Buenos Aries, Argen na, then transfer to another plane and travel backwards to Porto Allegre Brazil. This is very inconvenient but also uses up our one me use-onlyVisa….so this mode of transport is not possible. Furthermore, seats are now sold out and the one day strike may occur while in flight, which means we would be stuck in Buenos Aries. There are no run trucks to ride in as the boys here ride without them... Solu on, we will ride. Nope. You cannot cross a border in South America with a vehicle you do not own. Moreover, no bikes are available as there are no rentals. There are no bikes to lend as EVERYONE rides their bike on a run. This means if it is 5000 kilometers one way, you s ll ride. Yeah, not a big deal? Really! Well, for example, Manaus Brazil has no roads. To ride from Manaus to Rio is 3000 kilometers... three days boat ferry along the Amazon River and then ride along dangerous jungle road for another 3 days....so, it is not like at home as we got it good.
Uruguay
This leaves a trip by bus….are you fucking kidding me? To make ma ers worse, the only bridge across the massive River Plata is 300 kilometers out of the way. We need to travel a total of 600 kilometers just to get across the river. So now, we are into a 10 hour bus trip overnight. We will also need our Brazilian friends with us all the me once arriving as the part of Porto Allegre we will be in is not safe... especially for a couple of gringoes without a clue. My Uruguayan friends seem to love the unsafe. Of course, I have to ask...will the danger be mugging?, Knives? Guns?...of course, comes the reply; it is Brazil! ...to make ma ers worse, some of the adversaries are local police-gangsters playing both sides of the fence…..ahhh, go a love La n America. Buying a bus cket is a frustra ng 2 hour exercise.I am not feeling good about this but some mes looking for adventure and whatever comes our way is not always fun but adventuresome it will be! Riding Uruguay Our friends loan us bikes and we begin the ride up the coast. The ocean (sorry river) with sand dunes is on one side with lush vegeta on on the other. I don’t know what else to say but another great country for riding. My bike has 22” inverted T-bar apehangers. The name is self-descrip ve. It feels good...real good. The Bus to Brazil We are in the bus terminal; pandemonium! I am dreading this. We enter the bus. Paul has a window seat. Good! Oh, oh, the fa est woman (I think it is a woman) in the terminal flops beside Paul and burps...she hasn’t had a shower for awhile... quite awhile. This is funny! I ask Paul if he took a blue pill? Oh, oh. The seat beside me has a chicken coop with chickens. A blea ng goat walks the aisle, far ng at will. Don’s Life

Flat It’s the final countdown to the season opening weekend at Paris Speedway and I’m nervous as ever. With my journey into promo ng this new race series, I’m always entering the unexpected and that bothers me more than ever. I am absolutely terrified of failure, which doesn’t help since I have a hint of OCD to go with it. What’s the cure? Work my absolute bu off to try and overcome that horrible feeling. I temporarily mask the pain while I stay busy, however it comes back to haunt me every hour or so. Leading up to the race I have immensely high expecta ons and a vision inside my head which I keep driving towards. You have to get awfully crea ve when you have these high expecta ons while only dealing with a shoestring budget... But I look back at last year and seen that we pulled it off with virtually no support, by that I mean sponsors. Sponsors invest in a sport to make it grow and thrive. It’s like pooling in money with other investors to see a higher return on investment from overall growth and exposure. People love sports and events, therefore people love wri ng about and watching sports and events. If you made a small investment into a race or a rider, your business or self may get talked about more than you could ever afford in adver sing. Everyone knows adver sing is extremely expensive, but sponsoring young connected people can stretch that adver sing dollar a lot further than you’d originally expect. I’m entering the second year of running the Flat Track Canada race series. I can proudly say we made enough noise last year to have some people take no ce of the flat track world. We at Flat Track Canada have a racted some supporters to help us con nue to grow and have long term success. Entering 2014 we started a rela onship with some of our new corporate sponsors. We’re s ll on a shoe string budget but we’re trying to make the best of what we have. I’m pre y proud of being able to stretch a dollar but all I can say is thank you to our sponsors for making 2014 happen. Thank you Deeley Harley-Davidson® Canada, Parts Canada, Truckandcar.ca, Town Moto, Inside Motorcycles, Motorsports Canada (Zaeta), Hindle Exhausts, Klotz Canada, & Aylmer Express Graphics Group. By the me this is published the race weekend will be over and I’ll be heading into the next unknown, kind of tortured, yet there is no word for the feeling of excitement that overwhelms me when the bikes hit the track at Burford Fairgrounds on May 24th.

with Sherri O’Irish many well wishers, outof-towners, support club members, and long me friends, and good food and good mes, were had by all. A week later, I ventured out to the Lore o Tavern, on a Friday night, to see The Wheat Kings, a tribute band for The Tragically Hip. They put on an awesome show, and mixed it up with some new and old rock in between. The Lore o has become a favorite hot spot on Thursdays in the summer, due to their Bike Nights, and some of the best wings around. To start off May, on a Sunday, I crawled out of bed, and was driving down the road at the crack of dawn, to meet Critter and Frank, for the long haul to the Fort Erie Swap Meet. Before I even had my coffee half done, the shenanigans and joking started, (did I forget to men on, I’m NOT a morning person!) but it was impossible to keep a straight face. A er picking up SR, who was bright eyed and bushy tailed, we headed out to meet up with Bad Bob for breakfast, then on to the show. When we arrived, there were a lot of people lined up to get in, and start searching for parts. Dozens of bikes, lined the front entrance, and although brisk, the weather held out and was sunny. As I wandered the arena, camera in tow, I saw some familiar faces from previous shows, and shops from around that way, as well as ge ng to talk with some old friends, and catch up on the goings on. Cri er was busy working the room, as always, snapping pics, and showing off his doctors handy work, on those new knees of his, with no cane or brace! Meanwhile SR, Bob, Frank and I took turns handing out the latest issue, to the steady stream of people, some of which had their treasures in hand, happy to have found something rare, needed, or just a great deal. It was here that I met Shawn McCooey, the man with the plan for the Swap Meet. A er an accident le him hospitalized, and unable to a end the Spring Shows, he realized the opportunity to build on the idea of holding an event closer to home. Now a er 31 years, Fort Erie is s ll one of the best places to buy used parts in Ontario. With our stash of magazines cleaned out, we loaded up and were on our way, bringing to a close, another great spring show. Events like this, only help to make the motorcycle community be er and stronger, by networking, suppor ng local bike shops, exchanging informa on and knowledge, we ALL gain. Thanks so much for all your support for the Mag, at these events as well! Cheers! REMEMBER: “Swap Meet” is just a fancy name for “BIKER GARAGE SALE”!

This month’s feature gal is Denise, she comes from a riding family and says she got her M license at age 18 at a Sheridan College rider training course in Halton. Her dad was a rider, and o en took off on longer rides just for the sheer joy of the ride and Denise followed in her dads footsteps when it came to riding although she had yet to take a really long ride she and her husband Tim have plans to head out west at some future date. Denise says she was riding a Virago 750 when she started out her riding career and had many years of riding before she took the course and says she was frankly very surprised when she a ended the rider training course at the number of people who had never even rode a bike before who were on hand to actually learn how to ride a bike as opposed to safe riding or to a ain a license which apparently is the purpose of the course. I got the impression that she and

Denise says that like so many others when she had kids the bike had to get sidelined and in fact so sidelined that she actually sold her Virago 750 that she had rode for all those years and focused herself on her children, motherhood and she also started a home business which happily was and is adver sed in the mag called “Pardon Me” a service that helps individuals apply for a pardon for past transgressions against the law as it were. She says that as the years past and her children got a li le older she once again got the itch to ride having never been a passenger on her old man’s bike she wanted a bike of her own again and she went out and found herself another 750 Virago similar to the one that she had let go earlier in her life. Of course once she was back on the road there was no stopping her and she says a er a couple of years riding her metric bike she was looking around for a Harley and she came upon a bike up for auc on in Buffalo NY and was able to obtain the bike a few years back when the economy was looking pre y crappy for a lot of towns on both sides of the boarder and a lot of bikes came available for very reasonable prices and she scooped the bike up. It started out life as a mostly stock 2004 XL883, and it looks to me as if it may be the 883C model as it has the forward controls, Denise says that the bike ran excellent but it was a li le sad in that it had a few bits that were either missing or mis-matched saying that the foot pegs didn’t match the original blue paint had some wear and tear on it and a er a couple of years riding her Harley she says it became apparent that she really needed to think about a bigger gas
tank because she did like hi ng the road on day trips and stopping every hour for gas was a drag and she added rather comically that she had a very bad habit of ge ng lost while riding alone and that she was very concerned about running out of gas and ge ng stranded. She polled riding friends to find someplace to maybe get a bigger gas tank installed on the bike hoping for a li le more range, saying the only real changes she had ever made to the bike since buying it and ge ng it registered to plate and ride in Ontario was the bars which she said were drag bars when she bought the bike and she really didn’t like that and changed over to the somewhat famous flat track bars that are common on sportsters, saying they were be er but s ll not where she wanted to get to. The consensus amongst their riding friends that C.J. Cycle in Bolton was a good shop and that anyone who had dealt with Tony were happy with the work and highly recommended him to make some mods to her bike and a er ge ng such posi ve feedback she called Tony and told him that she was
looking to make some minor upgrades to her bike and then a er a couple of face to face mee ngs she brought the bike down to him in the fall of 2011 to change the tank. Tony had her pick out a tank and he started working on fi ng it onto the stock sportster and said that to make the tank work she should probably change the seat and when the seat was chosen she was worried that the seat looked to beefy behind the tank with the bobbed rear fend that was on the bike when she bought it and when they discussed changing the back fender and rear wheel of course they needed to think about the front end, wheel and fender, not everything would work in theory on a sporty but in my opinion they hit a home run on this one. The apes were the finishing touch to this beauty, Denise says the custom bags were on the bike when she picked it up and the customized rear fender, fat boy style front end and the apes along with all the matching pegs and pedals made this bike into the perfect ladies ride, Denise was very concerned that the bike was hers saying I didn’t want people to think I was out on my old man’s ride ya know, well like I said this is a home run, and when they were finishing up the paint Tony asked what style of Harley logo they wanted, the design on the tank is from a Harley shirt that she owned, scanned and emailed to Tony, innova ve to say the least. When you see Denise, you know that’s her cool ride.

Well on May 3rd most of the O awa and surrounding area motorcycle community was at the Capital City Bikers Church in Vanier par cipa ng in what has become the harbinger of spring for most riders, the Bikers Church Swap Meet. Now every year the good people at the CCBC put on a swap meet for which they charge the vendors no fee, and although in past years admission was free, this year they charged a $2.00 admission fee and out of that there was a $500.00 door prize and who can complain about that. Weather-wise it was warm but we just couldn’t get a break and see the sun come out and make it a perfect day. I arrived at the church between 7:30 and 8:00 am only to be greeted by an army of church volunteers who were wai ng to pounce on vendors to assist them in ge ng their swap to their appointed tables so that they could be free to find a parking spot because once this event has started you some mes can’t find a place to park for blocks. As usual I was graced with the help of not only the “Lovely” Be e, but also the rapidly becoming famous “Paper Boyz”, the name fondly being hung on friends & some of the TCB who come to events and help to hand out and help promote The Riders Mag, which always reminds me that what we do at the Mag is all about our various motorcycle communi es and the people in them and not about promo ng some slick publica on. The insides of the CCBC have been updated since last year and include an area with a pool table that is surrounded with several walls decorated as a tribute to fallen members and in par cular the TCB’s own Cur s “Outsider” McKeen, who sadly was the first TCB member to ever pass away and alongside his picture was not only a good friend of mine but a long me respected member O awa’s motorcycle community & the Bikers Church, Mike “M&M” Jefferies. Truth is, it makes me feel kind of

good to know that they are right there watching over their good friends playing pool and listening in on the conversa on. As usual, while everybody was ge ng the booth set up, I took the opportunity to slip away and see who else was par cipa ng in the event star ng with the downstairs and to try get some photos before things got so crowded with people that I spend more me cursing someone who walks in front of some shot I was trying to get and I end up cursing a blue streak. Hey! I never said I was perfect and I sure as hell am no saint!. Anyhow one of the first people that I came upon was Mr.Harley himself, Doug Taylor and his son James who were busily se ng up a table full of swap and their table is one of the very first that many builders head to because they usually have great stuff le over from builds and projects that father & son have collaborated on and at decent prices and truth is Doug is most likely one of the most highly respected individuals in O awa’s biker community. A few tables down from the Taylor’s was Animal Levert, also manning a table of swap goods and many of you may know him as one of the key individuals who started up the Na onal Memorial Ride, to honor Canada’s Fallen Hero’s and if you look back in our convenient Riders Mag archives, on our website www.theridersmag.com you can see some of the pictures that I had the honor to take while I par cipated in the NMR, last June. It was a day that was bi ersweet and made me proud not only of our military, but the motorcycle community who keep and honor the memory of heroes alive. While making this tour, Smokey and I were surprised to run into Roger “Bones” Nairne, who along with the “Lovely” Jennifer had flown back from Fort McMurray for a three day visit and that was a bonus for the day and a er a bit of catching up he promised us that they will
Motorcyco Beau be coming back to town for about 5 or 6 weeks later this summer. Both of them along with an equally great member of the local biker community, Tom Allain and the “Lovely “ Nathalie Lacasse, who were fundamental in last year’s Ride for Noah. I know I always go on and on about riders a ending local motorcycle cruise nights but how can you ever get to know some of the incredible people in your community if you don’t make the effort to par cipate. When I figured that it was me to head back upstairs and see how things were going at the booth the Soldiers For Jesus had a display were set up and manning the table was Breezy, Front Brake Nate & Don Bleeker and aside from the good work that these guys this club do for the community, I guarantee you that you cannot miss them with those eye-catching colors of bright yellow & black. Finally back upstairs Hillbilly, one of the founders of the bikers church came over and reminded me to men on to everyone that every Saturday night riders are welcome to come by the bikers church and par cipate in their “Biker Hangout” where you can play pool or watch movies or best of all, have a coffee with good people, he also took the me and introduced me to the CCBC’s new pastor, John Counsell who has taken on the task of being the lead pastor. The main floor of the church was pre y well filled up by now and I took a quick peek outside and saw that while s ll fairly early in the morning there were now about 60 or so bikes parked in front of the church and people were remarking that parking for trucks and cars was now becoming farther and farther away but then that’s a good sign that the swap meet is once again going to be a big success. Back at the booth the boys were on their best, charming everyone (mostly the ladies) and handing out copies of the Mag along with flyers for various rides & events that we support and joining the “Boyz” was Dave Kuhnle, the driving force behind the Ride for Au sm that will be taking place on July 16th and again a cause which affects many of us and our families and I personally will be par cipa ng in this year’s ride. While I was hanging out at the booth Wayne Leblanc, from the Eyes of Odin stopped by and to introduce me to some of his fellow riders who are all from Camp Petawawa and most of them are s ll ac ve military personnel and who are working towards doing charity work up in the Petawawa & Pembroke area and are trying their best to come down and take part in as many events & rides in O awa when me permits them. Just across the aisle there was a young woman that had

In a booth just next to Jeff were Mike & Adele Bossio and while many of you may know “Bozz” for being ac ve in doing great things over the decades in the biker community and being a member of TCB, you may not be aware that he is and was fundamental in the bringing about of the “May is Motorcycle Awareness” campaign that was started by an organiza on called S.O.A.R. which might never have happened if he had not worked so hard to keep this group going over the years. to get the a en on he deserves including his being directly responsible for O.R.R.A (Ontario Road Riders Associa on) coming to E. Ontario, as well as his hands on involvement in the E. Ontario Retreads and helping to man and operate the Na onal Memorial Ride, which I men oned earlier and I can’t help but feel that the people who really get things done for riders, never really are the ones who get the credit and notoriety they deserve and I am pre y sure he will want to kick me for saying all this. Long me friend Dan Allaston, owner of O awa’s two New Moon Ta oo studios stopped by to say hello to everyone and at the same me there were quite a few folks we know from the Cornwall area that came to a end the event including good people like Perry & Geneane Montgomery & Shelly Boisvenue, people who we try as o en as we can to get together with at the Thursday Bike Night at Gillard’s Chip Stand on Hwy 2 east of Morrisburg, which I might add if you find yourself enjoying a weekend cruise on this road which is used by thousands of bikers on a sunny weekend, stop by and say hello to them, the Gillard’s are incredible people and make riders always feel welcome. On one of my tours outside to have a look at the bikes I got to see good friend, Sco Towaij’s new paint job on his bike which in keeping with his being the Bikers Church Spiritual leader was painted not only biker church colors but proudly sported the bikers church logos. Sco is also an accomplished blues singer with several cd’s to his credit and on many occasions donates along with some of his fellow musicians to entertain the motorcycle community especially at events like the Motorcycle Apprecia on Day which we hope will come back into existence one of these days. Next door to the church, Dave “Snake” Smith was displaying one of the his bikes he has for sale and as usual he was drawing a crowd of curious on lookers to his pet boa constrictor that he had down at the Na onal Motorcycle & Ta oo Show in Toronto and kindly allowed a rather pre y young lady in Motorcycle Enhancements booth to have pictures taken with. When I turned around to head back into the church I no ced someone had their Indian parked there and the bike was certainly drawing a fair bit of a en on from people as they passed by. When I went back up stairs I bumped into Neil & Kim Eisenberg who are always a pleasure to stop
Motorcyco Beau and talk to and who both can be seen a ending just about every main biker event in the area throughout the summer and quite o en accompanied by another well known area rider, Dwayne Haddad and speaking of one of those “Main” biker events that take place in the summer during the month of August, Susie and Greg Kinghorn were set up and making people smile while they were promo ng their Big Daddy’s Cowpaddy Rodeo & Roast which we always a end as well as they were informing riders about the poker run in June and their toy run in September. These two people along with the friends really go all out to do good things for bikers and they are always suppor ng other area events and rides. During my wanderings, some of the people that I bumped into were the “Lovely” Linda Begin Kotowych aka “Flasher”, this lady heads up the Wind Sisters who are a rapidly growing bunch of ladies who love to ride and the “Sisters” are always heading out to somewhere pu ng serious mileage on their bikes. When I returned to the Mag booth and sat down to rest my weary feet because let’s face it, biker boots were never meant to go for long walks in, I was pleasantly surprised to be visited by Dave Balderson who used to run the bike show at the Ribfest in Gananoque and who is a man and a rider I truly respect. Dave is now ge ng ready to put on a motorcycle cruise-in that he will be hos ng this coming June 7th down in the Gananoque in the town park and again, I hope that I can find the me to head down and take part in this event because I like the town of Gananoque and enjoy spending me with Brother Dave even be er. I have to admit that while having some doubts about a endance being down slightly because of the weather, the turnout was actually really good and people who came were enjoying themselves because this swap meet is the first real chance in the year for people to get to hook up with friends & fellow riders that they have not seen since last fall when I encountered Hillbilly again a li le later, he told me they es mated that a endance was now at about 2000 people, not too shabby for an overcast day and one look at the outdoor pa o where the food was served was very busy but then again when you think about it, bikers and food sort of go together. All and all it was a fantas c me even though my aching feet forced me to come to the realiza on that the gods intended me to ride motorcycles and not walk. A er everything was all packed up and loaded everybody who helped us out at the booth and during the

We joined up with the Maloney’s, Brother Grinder aka Mike & the “lovely” Nancy who is famous for not only being a woman who travels thousands of miles a year on her motorcycle. but also bakes the best goodies you can imagine and kindly brings them to all of us at just about every event we are set up at. There were about five or six others good friends who showed up so that we totaled about 26 people or so and as red as I thought I was when I looked down at all those tables that we joined up so that everyone could sit together and I looked out at all those smiling faces, laughing and enjoying the great food, it all came together in my head why I love doing what I do with the Mag and why I love the biker lifestyle and why I wouldn’t trade places with anyone in this world. Just saying! Two weeks ago the new “Forever 2 Wheels Bike Night” at the Rideau Carleton Raceway in O awa’s south end was started and a er six years the motorcycles now have a separate lot for motorcycles only. Now there will be door prizes, games and 50/50 draws and as the bike night develops there will be an opportunity provided for various motorcycle rides, events & businesses to promote what they are doing to the public directly and encourage them to come out and show support for their event or their business. This bike night is sponsored by The Riders Mag (Eastern Ontario) and hosted by TCB and volunteers and I have to men on that two people I men oned earlier, Perry and Geneane Montgomery drove up from Cornwall to help

We donate not just money... we donate our me! .. As I men oned last month, B.A Machine has moved to their new quarters at 7174 Banks Street, out near the village of Metcalfe and if you are looking to get your Harley worked on, these are the folks to go to in the O awa area and at some point I will be pos ng their grand opening. We did checkout a poten al spot for bikers to have a cruise night in the west end of O awa but it was passed on because it was not suitable. If you know of a loca on that might be acceptable for a motorcycle cruise night in the west end, please email me. I am also looking forward to heading out to the town of Casselman which is east of O awa to show support for their Dice Run for the Casselman Air Cadets. I went last year and let me tell you it was wet and some mes bi er cold and yet the area riders showed up in dozens in support and when you take into considera on that this is a town where the main employer, Casselman Cheese Factory had burned down and it was going to be some me before it was rebuilt, they are an incredible motorcycle community and I look forward to seeing my friend Denis Renaud, who encouraged me to par cipate in this event originally and come to think of it, one of their crew came to the bike night at the Rideau Carleton Raceway Casino and the TCB let him set up a sign and hand out flyers to the crowd. As always please remember to send me any informa on of events, rides etc that are taking place anywhere in the Eastern Ontario Region and I will be more than glad to do whatever I can to help get the word out or take part in or if you are a motorcycle-friendly business and would like to reach out by adver sing in The Riders Mag, please let me know and contact me at.... email : theridersmag.beau@gmail.com Twi er: @Motorcyco_Beau As always I leave you with the reason we do what we do at The Riders Mag... “We Make Our Motorcycle Communi es Stronger!....By Making Them Be er!” Brotherhood! Clare’s Demo Days What’s the old saying? “April showers bring May riders” or something like that. Clare’s is one of the first dealerships in Southern Ontario to have Demo Rides and every spring it is an iffy situa on. I have been to a number of spring Demo Rides and it is either really cold and windy or raining. The policy with Harley Davidson® is “If there is rain, there is no ride”. On April 25, the skies were dark and there was a 40% chance of rain. The weather held out, but the threat of rain kept the numbers down. Approximately 100 riders came out to “Test the Metal”. I spoke with Cindy Lou (FYI…Lisa’s sister) and she said she had taken 6 bikes out and was going out again. She really liked the Road King and was taking it out. Since the numbers were low, you could basically ride in with group A and ride out with group B. A few Niagara HOG members were helping out with the two groups as outriders. The route is a simple country roads’ circle that gives you a good way to see if you like the feel of a specific model. The Fabulous Fenwick Lion’s Club had a BBQ going with great hamburgers at a good price, and business was steady. Inside, the registra on table was set up near HOG® Corner. To take a test ride you need a valid motorcycle licence, riding booths and a helmet. I believe they had some leather coats and helmets available for new poten al Harley riders. You sign up and off you go with the ride of your choice. Clare’s had 50% off in the clearance department and lots of merchandise available for Mother’s Day. Albert, from the Fenwick Lion’s Club, was set up selling ckets on a 2014 Harley-Davidson® CVO Road King. The draw is a yearly tradi on at Biketoberfest. This year Biketoberfest is on Saturday, September 20. Unfortunately the rain did finally come down and the demo rides had to be cut short. If you want to test ride a new bike, check out Clare’s calendar of events because there will be another Demo Ride towards the end of the summer.

Kitchener Harley-Davidson’s Open House by Kaz
Have you ever stopped and asked yourself, what would I do, if I didn’t have all these bike great events to go to every year. What about taking a minute and asking yourself, if I didn’t love riding so much what else would I do? Luckily many of us have spent most of our lives on 2 wheels. We have seen a lot of things change over the years. From those outrageously long springer front forks, molded frames and scalloped and dished gas tanks. Outrageous paint jobs with gold leaf and pin striping everywhere. And of course there was the pla ng, Gold, brass, copper and chrome everything that you could bolt on your bike. Remember those pipes to the sky, running up that 3 foot sissy bar with those King/ queen seats and s ck on P-pads. If you can remember those days, then you are sure to appreciate the advancements in technology Harley Davidson has made. With the introduc on of liquid cooled V-twin engines,
THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 54
LED ligh ng and killer audio accessories, Harley Davidson has pre y much taken the make it yourself out of the equa on. At Kitchener Harley’s open house, I spent some me with the staff going over some of the technology behind the new models, Cubic inches making lots of horses, Fly by wire controls thro le (no more broken cables), Wider res and rims to keep you out the cracks in the pavement. Kind of takes the challenge out of naviga ng the potholes. John flashed up on the shop garage door an impressive video comparing the new LED ligh ng technology with the other current industry lights. And the results were an astounding, “I didn’t even see the deer with the standard lights.” Of course their regular “No Tax” policy was in full effect like at most events held at the dealership. I must say that it was great to see a number of families posing on the bikes in the showroom. The ladies were busy taking selfies on the bikes, while the guys, well lets just say, they were looking and trying the fit and feel of their “most wanted” models. For some of the people, it may have been the purchase of the winning cket on the 2014 Street glide being sold by The Bran ord Kiwanis Club. Of course the parts counter was packed with people picking up some more goodies and the girls were all busy selling the motor clothes. No open house would be complete without Smokin’ Dave playing the guitar and of course you have to have cake and Timmie’s coffee for all those a ending. It seems that no ma er how ugly the weather is, there are always those few riders that just have to get out and ride. Even the luminous Natalia “Stone” was there with her new Forty-eight and there was no way you were taking the excitement or the smile away from her today. At the end of the day it all comes down to our passion to ride, the freedom and the open road. Kitchener Harley Davidson has once again shown us that they care about their customers, their bikes and that they are there to provide the latest in technology to those that are willing to accept the changes. With the introduc on of smaller lighter models Harley is sure to a ract an increased following. Congratula ons on another informa ve and organized event. Shiny side up and on the road Kaz

SABBATH TRIBUTE ROCKIN’ SOUTHERN ONTARIO
THE PERFECT BAND FOR YOUR NEXT CLUB FUNCTION Booking Info: Tony 416-823-6510 theblacksabbathtribute@hotmail.com That slave driver Cri er has me back to grind and trying fulfill my duty to report on the motorsickle communi es nefarious (wow big word)…ac vi es in Durham. If you watch TV…maybe you know this Seinfeld episode where they say they are doing a show about nothing…Well today is May 13th and what have I got to report, nothing, over the last several issues we have all beat the weather complaints to death, nobody wants to hear about the days we have lost for riding, so I won’t talk about the #%+&** weather ok? I have my bike on the road, went out with the club for our official on the road date a few weeks back ,it was dreary and wet, but we managed a few hours, headed back to Z-House for a party, and thoroughly enjoyed the company
of members/brides and friends, so much so that I parked my bike in the CH overnite and got a ride home. I missed the last issue so I can talk about the spring swap meet down at the Ex (be er living centre), finally got to see Cri ers trike, and no wonder he was so stoked, it is a truly an original build. I am sure it will be featured in other publica ons for years to come, and winner of many show and shines if he decides to enter them. I told Rick it will be fun riding down the highway when he pilots his Woody-Trike and watching the rubber-neckers gaze at it as we go by, it is a real head turner. If you have read some of my scribbling in the past you will know I am trying to get ar cles done on some of the originals of the MC community is Southern Ontario, certainly open to sugges ons of people you think would be interested (you can email the mag and pass on the info ). So without much more to say on the past few months I can blab about what is coming. I have teamed up with Raging Ricky from Aces and Eights to promote Bikes on Bond in Oshawa (Aug 16th) this year will be huge (note the advert in the Riders Mag) and my favorite thing, ”It’s Free”, it will be fun and it ain’t too far to travel for most of us. Along with taking over the Schwa Downtown there will be live music/ show and shine/vendors, several of the main streets in central Oshawa will be bikes only. So you can wander around for the day and know your ride is safe and sound. Hang out at one of the many bars/restaurants, buy some stuff, .whatever floats your boat. Last weekend we had our monthly bar nite at the Z-house and hosted a birthday for our friend Sam-I-am. It was well a ended by our members, our friends and the guys from the Rag Tags, plus Bryan from East popped in to say hello. Our Pres Big Red and his bride did up a fine spread for all, we got our big ole charcoal burning BBQ going (a converted 45gal barrel) so we had a real nice scoff and several ales!
Out for a ride to pick up some new spark clubs, on a busy Saturday I strolled into Mackies HD and ran in Paul Mackie who I hadn’t seen for quite a few years he is back steering the ship, and young Dan (sales mgr to the stars) plus an old riding buddy in the sales dept. No other than Chris (rides too fast) Hull . Riding The Good Day Good day. I just got back from Dukes Harley Davidson , changed my clothes into some dry ones , of course being caught up in a torren al down pour on my way home, got soaked on the way there too, but had a appointment to get service and already cancelled one last week due to the weather. Are we ever going to get a spring/summer/riding season ? Seams as thou every me I have the me to get out on the bike it is either too windy or raining like crazy, I don’t mind riding in the rain I just hate leaving home when it is doing so, knowing you will be wet all day. First off I have to slap myself on the wrist for last month’s issue . I referred to the Street Kings as a R/C rather than a M/C my apology to you guys. I a ended Neil Easterbrook ‘s annual spring bash last weekend, hosted by Neil and his lovely lady Jenny, these two throw an awesome party where all you need to do is show up. The venue was changed this year from their place in London to a very nice county lot out near St. Thomas where there was room for a very large bon fire, camping, lots of parking and a large tent in front of the garage for those rain drops. Oh yea it was raining lol I had a previous engagement in the morning helping my daughter move into her new home, so I was traveling up alone by car, wan ng to ride but when I was leaving home it was already raining, and the clouds east of me were very dark, pondering which way to go I opted for the car, a one hour 30 minute ride each way, I thought I would stay dry. Good thing too as I hit many down pours on the way, As I got off the 401 at #4 Hwy the roads were wet but the rain had stopped for the me being, then I hear bikes, yep people leaving the party, I thought oh oh the rain has pissed people off. Up the road a short spell I could see the party goers vehicles lined up parked on the street, I passed the driveway and did a U-turn and found a place to park on the road just a short walk from the entrance, got my stuff collected and headed in. There were many cars and motorcycles parked on the side of the road, on the front lawn and lined one side of the drive way. As I walked up shaking hands with friends new and old, I could smell food, not having me to eat before leaving I figured this was the me, straight over to the food are where Jenny was on hand cooking up some delicious burgers and dogs. I grabbed one of each, thanked her and proceeded to the back yard where there were many more bikes parked. Sharron had a couple guys looking at her bike, it did not want to start, a er about 10 minutes the problem was located and she was on her way. The rain storm

hit again, wind picked up and everyone headed to the garage and the large tent outside it, leaving a li le gap between the two some guys took advantage of the tent filling up with water pockets, at one point Neil calls out “Hey Cory come over here a sec” well you guessed it Cory stands near the gap and whoosh Neil soaks him with the water, of course this did not end here..lol Kirk and Lesley said their good-bye’s and were leaving, having parked on the front lawn, they headed to their truck, a 1ton Ford dually ext cab ect..got in and could not move, the rain had soaked the ground so much their truck has sank, about 8 people go out to help push, forward and back, forward and back, undoable we need more assistance. Snail goes and gets his Chev pick up,

chains up both vehicles and nothing, his truck also starts slippin’ and sliding, so more folks are summoned to assist and finally a er people pushing both vehicles Kirk was able to get out of his very deep ruts, was a fun me. As usual Neil’s party lasted to the very early hours of the morning, the rain only dampened the spirit as the party was a ended by many clubs and supporters, I had a great me thanks Guys. Ride for Dad is on June 1 this year in Windsor, preregister the day before at Rack and Roll club 3087 Forest Glade Drive or on the day of at Fes val Plaza 370 Riverside Drive from 7-9;30 am CAUTION PURCHASING FROM U.S.A. I’ve been talking with Len and Chris ne at Trike My Bike in Windsor over on Walker Rd. They have a client that is totally flabbergasted/upset/pissed off a er he purchased a Trike in the U.S.A., had a broker do all the paper work, paid the taxes and duty, brought the bike over, sounds easy enough. RIGHT, WRONG HERES WHY The rules are tricky, I referred to the RIV.CA ..aka Register of Imported Vehicles, and there is a long list of ineligible vehicles all for different reasons Seems you cannot import a vehicle that is not stockchanging a motorcycle 2 wheeler into a trike 3 wheeler eliminated the vehicles eligibility. Some examples of ineligible vehicles ---motorcycle converted into trike --- cargo van converted into camper ---adding a suspension li or lowering kit..( as on many bikes being lowered) Even though the taxes and duty are paid the vehicle is illegal This guy purchased his trike in Florida, got it back here and then he is contacted by Transport Canada, he now has 45 days to reconvert the trike back into a 2 wheeler, then upon comple on Transport Canada wants to see and inspect it. The purchaser in ques on lives out of town and called many shops and people to help him, Len has helped people in the past on the same issue. If the bike is not inspected by them with in the 45 days, Transport Canada will come seize the bike/trike and it ends up at auc on in the U.S.A. and the right-full owner looses out o n all their money invested. Len and Chris ne have told me about at least 4 individuals that this has happened to, and are in the midst of changing one back into a motorcycle 2 wheeler, which is not done for free and takes many hours labour and the added expense to the owner, who a er all this will be able to reinstall the same trike kit here in Canada and then it’s all legal, so Please be cau ous of your U.S.A. purchases and contact the proper people if you have ques ons, if in doubt don’t do it. You don’t want to lose $30,000 or more Hope the weather is gonna start par cipating. see yas on the road L&R Guardrail
Joke “When a woman has kept a secret for twentyseven years, she can keep it forever.” The teacher had given the class an assignment. He stresses the importance of this par cular assignment, and that no excuses will be accepted except illness (with a medical cer ficate) or a death in the immediate family (with a note from that member). A smart-ass student pipes up: “What about extreme sexual exhaus on, sir?” The class breaks up laughing, and when they se le down the teacher responds with, “Well, I guess you’ll have to learn to write with your other hand.”
