Cruising With Critter September October! Wow! I get chills just typing it out and seeing the words appear on the monitor! Already? Seriously? The summer has flown by and it seems like only yesterday we were waiting for our nastiest winter and spring combinations in years to finally release us from its grip and let us get out on the road and on with our all too short riding season. You may have noticed another change that I’ve made to the cover of The Mag. We have found that it was no longer reflective of our entire readership to be just for the Gnarly Harley Rider as my experience has shown me that we have moved far beyond a niche market and encompass a larger more eclectic audience than that moniker would suggest. While we will always have Harley as our main theme and continue to feature Harleys but it no longer truly defines what we are now. Just as we outgrew our Southern Ontario boundaries we have outgrown the confines of being just for Harley Riders but appeal to Riders of all stripes, sexes and individual tastes and preferences. We are now and will remain The Magazine for Riders. It has been a busier than normal season for me with trying to fit everything into the all too short days when combined with my ever dwindling energy levels, expanded responsibilities with the Mag and heavier workload it can be a real challenge to get it all done. Also now that my new parts have been installed in my knee and all is healing well and I’m walking pretty well normally (Better than I have in years!) again and my doctor has given me a clean bill of health, I have returned to work full time as a truck driver for Canada Cartage, a great Company for whom, I have proudly worked for the past forty some odd years. They have just celebrated 100 years in business and have done so by treating their customers and their employees well. I know they have always treated me fairly and honestly and I’ve never been ashamed to tell anyone that I work there. It is hard to let go of something that has been a part of my life for this long and if I don’t have to, or don’t want to I won’t! It’s that simple. I love The Riders Mag, what I do and the people I do it for and I won’t let it die. That is the only reason I reluctantly, took over the Mag! I was quite content to be who I was, doing what I loved, but sometimes you just have to deal with circumstances as they arise and it was necessary. I am fortunate to have Al as my Managing Editor who is far more knowledgeable and capable of doing the shit that is involved with the business aspects of The Mag than I can ever hope to be. That leaves me where I can stay grounded and focussed on what I do that makes me who I am and who people seem to identify with. I have regretfully had to miss several events and happenings simply because (This is a multiple choice excuse list, and you can pick the one that you think best applies.; A) There aren’t enough hours in the day. B) Neither Petoonia, Black Bitch 2 or Black Bitch 3 are fast enough to cover the miles that I would have to cover to get to the different events that I’ve been asked to attend that occur on the same dates at the same time, different parts of the Province. C) Even if they were fast enough the Cops don’t give me special lanes, permits or permission to travel at those speeds. D) There isn’t enough dough in the budget for one of those fancy helicopters that our elected officials have access to.

E) I was just too fucking lazy or partook in too many 50s or too much rum to make the effort. F) I was too busy creating this list of excuses to make it out to your gig! Anyhow that’s my list of reasons or excuses and I’m sticking to whichever one (or Ones) that you choose. This list of those events that I wasn’t able to get to are long and I do regret not being able to attend and I apologise to; Gerry Huron for not attending the memorial ride in up in Beaverton, for his wonderful wife Madeline who passed on last year. I loved her, as did anyone and everyone who ever met her and she has been sorely missed. I had a couple of back-up people who were going to stand in for me but one broke a bunch of bones and suffered a whole list of injuries that would take a half hour to rhyme off when he went hunting deer with his brand new Harley. He survived. The deer and the Harley were not so fortunate! Then his back-up, being his son, suffered a broken hip while trying to recapture his youth pulling stunts he was to have outgrown years ago and wasn’t able to attend either. Some guys will do anything to get out of an assignment! Hope you guys heal fast! Sorry Gerry! I had a couple of events that are traditional that I was unable to attend for the first time in many years as well, but it wasn’t for the lack of trying or desire to do so. The ABATE, Final Frontier event has always been a favourite of mine and then I stop in at The Outlaws MC National party on the way

Cruising With Critter back and visit with old friends there for a while. That was the plan! But you know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men; something can always happen to fuck them up, big time or words to that effect. I left on Black Bitch 3 with plenty of time for the ride out that way to take in that amazing event and get to reacquaint myself with some great people and cover the games. I knew that the Ravishing Redheaded Roving Reporter Sherri O’Irish was there but she would be leaving early to cover another event as well but this was, as I said, a traditional event for me and I really wanted to be there. A quick stop for gas in Shelburne where a negative response to my hitting of the starter button left me pushing the trike away from the pumps, cursing and relying on the kindness of strangers for a push to bump start the Bitch! I had no tools with me and while they may look pretty and shiny; chrome covers over things like starters and such serve to deny you access to them to fix things or even check them in situations like this. So with the beast fueled up and running I opted not to have to go through the whole asking for a push routine over and over throughout the day and made a call to Sherri asking her to apologise for me to the ABATE people and see if she could cover the games for me, I officially aborted that mission and headed back. I had called my buddy Bronson and he was home, in fact he was in the shop working on Petoonia who was in for some minor stuff and made arrangements to drop off the trike and pick her up when he was finished.

By the time I got to Bronson’s, finished the repairs to Petoonia and made the switch it was too late to even make the Outlaw’s party in respectable time and besides Bad Bob was over there taking care of things but the fact remains that I missed seeing a lot of people that I don’t get to see that often. I was also unable to attend the Kirkfeild Invasion which is turning into a Monster event for my buddy Rick Gibson and his Kawartha Charity Riders Club as well and my backup guys were still recovering from their injuries. Sorry Rick I hope you had a great day. I was extremely saddened to hear about the passing of Steve Marcotte of the Red Devils MC in Hamilton. Steve was a well-respected and much loved Member who was living out his life-long dream of being a member of the Club who was taken from us and the World in a tragic motorcycle accident on Aug. 9, 2014. I was regrettably unable to attend the funeral personally but from all reports from many who were there; the funeral was well attended by representatives of Clubs from all across Canada with some two hundred and twenty five motorcycles in the procession. It was a fine tribute to a man, a brother, a friend, a son, a father, a Grandfather (Grampy), a friend, a teacher and a hard working family man who ran a house framing business and taught carpentry at Mohawk College. Steve was a fun loving guy who was so happy in his chosen lifestyle and his life in general. He lived for his family and for his club brothers and was having a ball pursuing his passion and living his dream. He loved motorcycles and he loved to ride. He recently ran at Cayuga Speedway and broke 100 mph. and was told he was now a member of the 100 MPH Club! It was a fictitious award but Steve was so thrilled that they didn’t have the heart to break it to him and a special badge was made up for him and has been presented to his widow Tammy. I heard another story of Steve losing a race to a lady racer at Grand Bend due to the way the race was scored and Steve insisted he’d won because he crossed the line 1st. There are a lot of Steve stories that are being told and that will be told for years to come, whenever his name is mentioned or memories of him come floating through the minds of family, friends and Brothers and they will invoke different reactions from different people and will bring a smile to the lips, a warm glow in the heart or a tear to the eye of those who had the pleasure and the honour to have known him. To inspire memories and cause emotion in others means you lived your life right and had an influence! That is a legacy in itself! GBNF! Ride in Peace - Steve Marcotte May 19, 1970 – Aug. 9, 2014 The Brotherhood Summer Bash 2014 I did manage to make it out to the Brotherhood party at its new venue (I’d missed two of my must attend events so far this weekend and I wasn’t going to miss this one.) and felt

Cruising With Critter it felt like I was caught in a time warp as it felt so much like the old place up in Sparrow Lake! People camped among the trees and with little nooks and crannies everywhere that really gave it a sense of privacy and intimacy. It was incredible and close to home for many including myself! I rode in and found what I thought was a suitable spot, (close but away from the action) for Petoonia to sit for the day and started wandering running into many friends along the way as well as a couple of boob shots to update my files with updates to the boobs as tattoos appear or disappear or piercings are added as enhancements. Hey this whole boob thing is a job in itself. This has been one of my traditional, annual, must attend functions for more years than I can remember and I was coming to them long before I got involved with The Riders Mag and followed them from location to location when the property up in Sparrow Lake was no longer available to them. It has always had distinct feel about it but over the past few years it just didn’t have that same vibe. Well the vibe was back big-time thanks to JJ and this really great piece of property and I wasn’t the only one to notice. It was the general consensus that this could well be the new home of this remarkable summer bash! It was great to mingle with old friends many I haven’t seen

for some time and grab one of the ice-cold 50’s that they had brought in. Someone must have told them I was coming! I then moved to the food truck provided by Big D’s House of Munch and tried some of the great food that everybody was raving about. I spotted Wolfie tearing around the property on his new side car set up giving rides to kids and anyone else who wanted to climb on board and he roared over to show it off. There is some pretty fierce competitions in the events here and some like Haircut, Vinnie and Clint were already cruising up and down the field that would soon become the drag strip sizing it up, looking for ruts to avoid and so on in an effort to gain a bit of an edge to settle many long standing grudge matches that exist. They started with the Show and Shine and I positioned myself where I could get shots of the winners while still carrying on conversations with various people. Casanova who always does such a great job was calling out the winner for one of the categories, “Best EVO” and read out the license plate number several time and everybody was looking around to see who won, including me when the num-

Cruising With Critter ber he was calling sounded vaguely familiar before realizing that it was Petoonia’s number. It really surprized me because I didn’t realize that I had entered her but the spot where I parked her was in the Show and Shine area. Thanks guys! The trophy sits proudly on a shelf right beside the one that the Black Bitch 3 won the week before! She rode even better on the way home with that prize in her beer box. I’ll leave it to her to point out to the trike that her trophy is slightly bigger. Anyhow the games were getting under way and these games are a little bit more intense and a lot more gritty than you see at other events that tend to tame them down a bit, but here, it is full out, full on, balls to the wall competition with some pretty fierce but good natured rivalry as these folks are game and came out not just to compete, but to win! They ran the drag races in different classes that pitted brother against brother, fathers against sons, wives against husbands, wives against their kids and rivalry is strong and the dust from the dirt track soon hung thick in the air blending with the smell of exhaust and the sound of powerful engines lending to the great atmosphere.

This Club has history and tradition as it has many generations of families involved and they have survived the turmoil of change that happens over the years and judging from the younger faces in the crowd who seemed to delight in the action and many fresh faces proudly wearing the bottom rocker, they will be around for a lot longer. They still have plenty of the old members still out and still competing and still loving it, like Deacon, Wolfie at 71 years young, Haircut,

Vinnie, and so many others and the ladies like (HRH) Tracey and Sophie who aren’t afraid to mix it up in competition and the members of the next generation like Shortcut who gives his Dad a run for his money. They even had side car races as another side hack showed up and Wolfie had some competition. The drag racing done they moved through the other events like the passenger pick up, slow race, and wiener bite that are traditional favourites and then into the events are real favourites. The tire pull, men’s and ladies pick up sticks and then the tug of wars. The pickup sticks is a biker version of musical chairs except it’s done with short lengths of rope of which

you can be in possession of the person that has possession of the rope and drag carry, roll or do whatever it takes to get that person back to your bike and you win. I have seen many more intense battles in this event than I’ve seen in professional wrestling rings. It can be a rude awakening for a young newbie to come in and figure it will be a cake walk competing against some of the ladies that have been doing it a while and find out there is more to it than prancing in then prancing out when a lady like Kat is on the field and think that bra straps work good for take downs and dragging. HogTown BaconFest 2014

It was an absolutely gorgeous day as I set out on Petoonia pointed her to the West and kept on going until we came to the beautiful Town of Lucan where apparently pigs were the guests of honour today as it was Baconfest and Hogtown Cycles was right in the middle of it all. It was like there was a bacon scented cloud hanging over the entire region as I could smell bacon even as I approached Town and it just intensified as you got closer to the centre of Town which is where Hogtown’s great store is located. By the time I actually arrived I was salivating and the bacon monkey leapt onto my back at the edge of town and hung on tightly for the rest of the day. The Store was easy to spot even before you saw the familiar Orange and Black Building as they are now an established main player in this event and obviously have a huge draw of their own that has a positive impact on the festival as a whole. They have now claimed space on the street in front of the Store to accommodate all

THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 10

the motorcycles that had their large parking lot overflowing and even have official barricades, signs and everything on the street declaring Motorcycle parking only but they had overwhelmed that as well and riders were just parking everywhere and anywhere they could secure a spot. There was a pretty young lady with a large sign out on the sidewalk promoting the very popular, Bikini Bike Wash that the Western Cheerleaders Squad was performing again this year. Bikes were lined up already and cameras were everywhere. I made my way onto the lot and wiggled into a spot only to find our own Bad Bob standing there waiting for me. I gathered up my trusty Nikon and Bob and I headed off to explore the event. You know the bike wash was my first subject for the camera just to test it out of course then headed inside the Store itself that was jammed with riders checking out the great deals and specials and scooping up bargains which had Teresa, Mike their entire crew working steadily. I did get to say hi but knew that they really didn’t have time to talk. So we just moved around so I could check out the rest of the place and the things that were going on. The lineup for the barbecue was enormous and I figured I really want something with bacon but not that bad as it was really starting to warm up so we busied ourselves with other things to dislodge the thoughts of bacon from our brains and checked out some of the other stuff they had going on like the feats of strength

HogTown BaconFest 2014

that were being exhibited by some guys from a local gym that got me tired and worked up a bigger appetite just watching so I moved on and found the Hogtunes display and was able to get some information on updating or improving my stereo equipment on the trike and getting some replacement speakers for Petoonia. But even the name Hogtunes had me thinking of bacon. The band, a local favourite called “The Geoff Masse Band” fired up the crowd with some great renditions of some good old Rock’n Roll tunes. There were some local artists not only displaying their work but one gentleman was capturing the whole scene on canvas; not an easy task with an ever changing landscape like the one that faced him here, but he seemed unworried and seemed to have it well in hand! Derek Botten from the local radio station was there doing what he does and was always swamped with people around him so I didn’t get to say hi and just kept wandering until the hot sun triggered a coughing spell that I knew could be only cured or controlled by a cold 50 or two and I knew right where to get one. About five doors down on the right was a great little Irish Pub where apparently it is St. Patrick’s Day every day, but they do have 50 and I bellied up to the bar and ordered one or two and a bacon sandwich just to keep in the spirit of Baconfest and I could perhaps pry the monkey free from my back. The 50’s came and I engaged in conversation with other patrons at the bar and drank my beer whilst waiting for the sandwich which never did arrive as all of a sudden the bar that was near empty when I came in was now packed with people many of whom I’d seen at Hogtown. I guess the hot sun had the same effect on a lot of people and they saw me wandering off and figured that I had the scent of cold beer and they followed me. Anyhow the huge crowd proved to be a bit overwhelming for the poor girl who had been doing well on her own before the invasion of thirsty bikers. Her boss came in to help her out giving some relief but my sandwich was missing in action and I ended up leaving with my thirst quenched but my stomach grumbled and my craving for bacon went unsated. One good thing was a retired firefighter from Blythe with whom

I was talking (Sorry but I forgot his name but I do have his picture and he knows who he is!) paid for my beer. I thank you very much again sir and I hope you continue to enjoy the Mag. I checked the line up at the barbecues once again but it was still way to long or my patience level was too short and the bacon monkey would remain on my back for many more hours before I finally got my fix, when I got back to Newmarket. Bob and I both had other places to go that day both collectively and individually so we headed out leaving the fragrance of bacon that still clung to my clothing as a constant reminder that I hadn’t eaten yet today and caused my stomach to continue to growl and grumble so loud I had to turn up the stereo to drown it out and now wished I had those replacement speakers from Hogtunes. It was a great time and the place was wall to wall people all day and it looks like they did an awesome business and that their clientele is growing. Proof that nice people don’t always finish last sometimes they rise to the top because people enjoy dealing with them. Anyhow Happy Baconfest! Happy Anniversary! See you next year!

B.R.O. Niagara Summer Bash by JR I took a ride with B.R.O. Niagara for their summer bash in July, it was a wet looking day when I left but I was hoping beyond hope that I would ride out from under the rain. When I left as it was just starting to sprinkle a little bit. To my dismay the further I headed down the Q.E.W. towards the Niagara and the new start location on Lundy’s Lane the harder it was raining. Of course the traffic was heavy being a Saturday in July and with people driving like the nuts that they are in their cars I opted to jump off the highway at the 406 and cut through the Thorold tunnel. I stopped under a bridge just before 4th street to put my big raincoat on as I had had just about enough of the rain, ahead of me was a construction zone and the traffic was bunching up so I opted to go via the city route through St. Catherines. I don’t know about the rest of you but the north side of the city is easy to get around in but the south side, forget about it, if you’re not from there it’s a mystery. Needless to say I got lost, so lost that I actually ended up going backwards about 10 miles before I finally emerged

THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 12

from the labyrinth of roads that twist and turn around the old city, the old canals, the overflow canals, and the escarpment. I emerged on Victoria Avenue in Vineland so I knew just where I was and I knew just to get to where I was going. Problem was that besides the driving rain, which I was mostly protected from I was now late as I had allowed and hour and a half roughly to get to a spot that Google said I could ride to in under an hour, good planning. Of course when I asked Google for the directions it wasn’t raining, it wasn’t a Saturday and it didn’t know I was riding a motorcycle and was prone to getting lost in St. Catherines. The last riders were to be out of there by noon and I arrived at quarter past 12 relieved to see motorcycles still in the parking lot but dismayed to know that Mike whom I always join up with cause he knows the way through St Catherine’s had already left. So I set out to try to catch up to Mike and company, I knew Thorold fairly well and had been on the run before so I headed out for that first stop and after one wrong turn I did find my way along to the first stop where I was greeted with a slice of pizza and a card to add to what would turn out to be yet another dismal poker hand. I was surprised to see all the old cars out on the main drag in Thorold as other years despite the less than ideal weather, once I had a couple slices I asked who I could hook up with to get to the next stop in St. Catherines. I hooked up with some riders from Chippewa, to help me find the way to the next stop in St. Catherines, I knew for sure having already wandered the south side of St. Catherines once that I was sure to get lost and miss the ride altogether, thanks for getting me over there guys I appreciate the help. Gratefully at that point I caught up with Mike and his entourage of riders and when they moved out for the next stop I had drawn another worthless card and hooked onto the end of their group and we headed over to Jordan. Since I had had a couple slices in

B.R.O. Niagara Summer Bash by JR Thorold I was good to go and not in need of fuel to continue, the rain had continued off and on over the course of the ride so I never shed the raincoat although I did ditch my jean jacket as I was sweatin bullets and it wasn’t all that cold out this day. When they signaled it was time to move out our next stop across the peninsula in Crystal Beach we rode south. As we did it started to rain again, and then some more and some more to a crescendo where it began to remind me just a little bit of riding the monsoons in Arizona a few years back only then I did not have the benefit of a rain coat, or a windshield (although I was riding a rented road glide but it had one of those fancy ass low profile shields on it) I began to question my own sanity knowing that I was about 25 minutes away from home while we were in Jordan and as we turned onto Highway 3 just outside Port Colborne and passed the golf course I had played the day before I wondered to myself why I was on this ride in these conditions but then again when I looked around and saw the abject misery of most of the other riders in our group who had either no protection or a pair of totally soaked chaps I realized I was there for the ride and the event. As we rode through Port Colborne we started to shed bikes as many of the B.R.O. members from the Port Colbourne chapter peeled off and headed home to shake off the wet and cold chill park their bikes and head to the bash in their cars. Our Fearless leader pulled into a different Tim’s than last year opting for one downtown as opposed to the far side of town announcing that we were gonna skip the last card stop in Crystal Beach and the bonus card stop in Snyder and head straight to the bash site in Port Robinson after everyone coffeed up. We stood around in the rain and shot the shit waiting for the rest to be ready to move again, after a short while we headed out on Hwy 3 down to Millar Road and headed north towards the bash site and after a short ride we arrived, parked and headed into the property where the band was rockin, the fire was blazing, assorted tents had been set up earlier in the day for the after the festivities as a place to collapse after a wet day of riding and a night of partying , music and some fantastic looking pork roasting over a wood fire that looked so tasty I was about ready to drool just lookin’ at it. Of course they always serve, burg-

ers, dogs, sausages and fries at the B.R.O. place and the members stand ready to feed any size contingent that might show up in support of their various causes that they support, most of which are direct impact type things benefitting local people in need whatever their need is, definitely the best kind of charity there is, no fat cat paychecks, or lack of accountability for sure. It was great to see Nick at the bar as usual with that fabulous looking gal of his, he looked at me and shook his head, you guys gotta let us know eh? I looked at him questioningly, he said I don’t have any Corona, I had it for you in May and you didn’t show

up. He was right of course, I had to have a tooth extracted that day, it was causing me so much pain I couldn’t even sleep the night before and for sure I would have imbibed, likely way too much. For another event he expected Critter and had 50 and he was sent someone else, oops. Well I do always look forward to seeing that fabulous gal of his (sorry I can’t recall your name) and I always take a picture, the camera was acting up a bit cause it don’t like all that rain but I did get a shot I hope the powers that be use it. I settled on some J.D. my only other love in drinks although I do enjoy a Caesar with dinner sometimes. It was great to see Smiley at the event, he and I have a tradition that stretches back quite a few years now of having breakfast together at Dads Diner on Bridge Street at the start of the Eagles Nest Annual Miles for Smiles Ride, I personally haven’t missed one in 16 years, sadly due to Lorries health as a result of her cancer treatments she decided she couldn’t pull it off this year, get well Lor, Smiley and I are counting on you for next year and we’ll likely bring Bad Bob along with us as well. needed, tried to get a hold of Lorrie and Jim from the Eagles Nest as Jim was to judge the show and shine, since field games were a long shot with the weather and ogled and drooled over the pork I headed out, tried a new route the port guy told me about only to get turned around in Welland because the East Main Street Bridge was closed for restoration. I dunno why they would restore that bridge they don’t even use it any more as it’s over the old canal and no boats ply that waterway, so WTF? The lovely Bonnie sent me the details of the event and the direct action cause that this year’s event was supporting along with poker run winners, band names, and results of show and shine and even a couple of field games that they must have put on later in the evening, I doubt anyone is surprised that Chappy won the slow ride, he’s freaking legendary. Proceeds from this event went to help a 4 year old girl named Regan. She has Cystic Fibrosis and undergoes “pounding” treatments several times a day...where they physically pound on her chest and back to clear fluids from her lungs. Her parents want to buy her a special vest (can’t remember the proper name for it) that would automatically administer her needed treatments. The cost of this vest is $12,000.

Circle Niagara Run 2014

The whole sunny, warm, weekend of June 21st, and 22nd, could have been listening to live bands, drinking beer, looking through a lot of vendors wares, eating pizza and burgers and wieners and ice-cream, camping out at the Niagara Regional Exhibition & Fairgrounds (3 time home of the Canadian Biker Build Off - you remember those), with free entry, and just the mildest gratuity request on departure if you enjoyed yourself. While you’re reminiscing, remember back to March of this year? The new open out calendar (that the Riders Mag is now providing), had Quinn’s Custom Motorcycles as the Builder/Shop of the Month. They’re the company that put a lot of effort in to this event, to be a great hit with bikers, and Welland city folk alike - a give back to the community kind of thing, and a shout out to Ontario and the upper states to come on in to Welland and party on. Well how do I start a story like this? Do I start in Selkirk. Let me think about that for a second. Hell yeah. You haven’t heard about Selkirk since my last story! The cats will never let me sleep in. 9am is about as much as they can stand to let me lay idle in bed - and that’s after being beaten, walked over, yelled at, laid on, shed over at 5am through to 9. I get up, feed them, let them out, drink coffee. It’s June, the must do list has shrunk quite considerably after weekends of doing,

but I still have several more jobs to be completed before I go off to Welland, so I’m not making the 10am Circle Niagara Motorcycle Bike Run. That will be the best part of Niagara Niagara-on-theLake, down the gorge, through the hoards of Oriental Tourists taking pictures of Motorcycle riders roaring through Niagara Falls, through Chippewa, to Fort Erie, and then out to Crystal Beach, before returning inland, to Welland again, getting back to the fair grounds for about 3:30. It was a really nice ride that was attended by riders who came from as far away as Quebec, and somewhere in New York. What was the day like, you ask? Was it nice, do you think? How’s your memory for June 21st? Start your imagination whirling with just a perfect day. Got that picture in your mind now? Pour a blue sky in to that imagined perfect day, a bright sun to bronze the tan a bit more, green grass, the hint of a breeze, a little touch of perfection. Now generously toss the promise of live tunes, (a band an hour) from 3pm Saturday until 10pm, and Sunday from 12 noon until 5. Mix a field spectacle of motorcycles, girls (or boys) - your preference, vendors, and food. It was an ideal beer drinking party weekend, and yes folks, beer was available on site, directly in line with the band stand. From the beer garden, just about the entire venue could be

So who were these bands I speak of? Well, Shane C Neal and Robby R Rock from Max Ink’s BS Live Rocks put together the list (www.bsliverocks.com). There was Leather and Lace, Chalkface, Witz End, Sister Act, On Tap, Ur Girlfriend, Black Sabbath Experience, and X Days Left ended the set on Saturday. Sunday started with Nathalie and Norm, Fear the Worst, The Waist Band, Konvikshun, Savvy, and the weekend music was to wrap up with Back-up Plan. I was not there for the whole weekend, my to-do list wasn’t getting any shorter with me merrily tanning in Welland, drinking beer, talking to good people I haven’t seen in years, eating pizza and delicious sausages. Lets go down the vendors, but first, remember that song by the Cars - “Nightlife Baby”? That’s what I’m listening to, live, as we head up from the back of the field with Full

Rose City Chrysler Dodge Jeep has a new pickup and jeep here, Digital Detail graphics & auto spa in Welland is showing off their race car covered in decals, Rod Barber from Wizards Products bike polishes compounds cleaners and detailing supplies from St. Catharines, Craig Hotrod Photography in Welland, there’s motorcycle gear helmets leathers jackets vests gloves, the Hells Angels has a venue full of T-shirts, Fabulous has a large selection of jewelry on offer, Country Corner Market has the tasty sausages, Marble Slab Creamery Ice-cream, David Chevrolet Corvet Buick GMC Welland put several pick up trucks in to show, we have a candy vendor, one of the big Pizza restaurants has a tent here. Are you listening to Stevie Ray’s “Pride and Joy”? No? Well I am. I think it’s the band “Witz End” playing the song LIVE here at the fair grounds with just as much passion as the man himself could muster in his day. Lets go get ourselves a beer to wash down this pizza slice. People behind the bar were: Zack, Kevin (kinkacho), Paul, Debby, Sandy & Mike. Now I’m reminiscing, thinking about the last time I was here, for the extremely washed out CBBO back in... what year was that now? 2010? And there was that really terrific bike shop just up Merrittville Hwy called X-Treme Custom Cycle, where Barry and Billy? was it? made those scary fast amazing builds. Holy mother of... there’s Barry now! He’s got a beer, he’s sitting with Quinn. Lets find out what this is all about.... OK, After sitting a while, finishing the beer, listening to them, Barry’s working at Quinn’s! I guess I didn’t read that whole March story in the Riders Mag with the calendar pull out that told all about that. As I was leaving, still more bikes were coming in, and the next band was playing a set of songs by Journey. At some time during the year, I expect you’ll be in Welland, looking through Quinn’s Custom Motorcycles won’t you? Hopefully you’ll take a look round the shop, and since you’re there, how about you pipe up, and tell them you’d really like to see this event come back again next year, to the same venue, bigger, and better than even it was this year. They’ve got to make it happen, but it’s up to you, folks. Jonathan Musson (petflightinc.com)

Black Hawks M.C. Open House 2014 It was a beautiful day, Sun shining, no clouds and nice and warm as I loaded up the trike and headed off to meet up with Bad Bob in Burlington and ride together to the Black Hawks MC annual open house at Suck Bang Blow. The trike ran well but it is apparent that I need to work on the gearing a bit as it can be a bit of a pig on the highway but she got me there just fine. We rolled in to find the place filled with bikes and people and we were well received as Mouse and other members came over to say hi and check out the new trike. It drew a lot of attention and a there were a lot of great comments on the quality of the woodwork that my Pal Dusty put into that box. There were a lot of familiar faces there and no shortage of people to talk to as this is a classy bunch of people and you are always made to feel welcome. It is a great bar as well with no shortage of pretty bar staff and the food is really something to experience. I worked my way around the various tables on which the Club had all kinds of memorabilia and nostalgic items and photographs on display. This is a large and very interesting collection as this Club has a long history and are very proud of it. I got a bunch of pictures before heading to the bar in search of a cold beer and then out to the spacious patio to settle in and chat with friends like Michelle and Ty who seem to be everywhere these days, as was Wheels as he also turns up at a lot of events and is always a pleasure to talk to. I also took the time to partake in one of the amazing and absolutely massive burgers. It was all I could do to eat the whole thing but it was so damn good, it would be criminal to not to finish it. The mountain of scrumptious fries that came with it got reduced to a large hill but I just couldn’t cram any more food in me. I got to kick back and enjoy the afternoon with a bunch of great people soaking up the warm sun and some of the history that comes from listening to all the wonderful stories that were being shared by folks who have seen and experienced a lot over the years. It is a privilege to share in these stories and the memories and it is through these stories on occasions such as this that members and friends that are no longer with us live on. As a special bonus I won the 50/50 draw and that would more than pay for the gas that the trike burned getting there and back. I got a chance to talk to a fascinating couple Major (Retired) Don Kennedy C.D. of The Royal Hamilton Light Infantry, Wentworth Regiment and the lovely HooJung Jones and got to hear of their efforts and accomplishments that could be an article of its own. The afternoon flew by and it was soon time for Bob and I to mount up and head for home leaving this fine group of men and women to share even more memories and swap stories. Thanks for your very kind hospitality! See you all next year!

Fighting for Your This was supposed to be an article about the misfortune I encountered during my recent trip east to the Rock but, in contrast to current tragedies, my difficulties are minutiae by comparison. Even though this column was created to illuminate civil injustices, there are times when it becomes necessary to give ourselves a reality check concerning asphalt injustices. Ours is a lifestyle that is based upon a dangerous activity – the rolling of two big wheels. Our love of motorcycles is always paramount in our thought . . . which is why we adopt the dress code, cultivate likewise individuals as friends, and ride as though we are immortal and immune from serious injury. That image plays well on the silver screen but it is far removed from reality as this summer’s motorcycle accident occurrences are steadily on the rise. It appears, or seems to appear, that reporting fatal or severe motorcycle accidents has become weekly news fodder which competes with youth shootings and stabbings for ‘most reported local human suffering’. Why this summer? There are many factors . . . the proliferation of motorcycles and the stellar riding weather are major contributors but this has also been an unprecedented summer for road construction and tourism which contribute significantly to the frustration levels of motorists. Bikers share the asphalt with many forms of transportation and, due to our agility and small profile, are sometimes overlooked (and ignored) in traffic – second only to bicyclists and dark clothed pedestrians. For the most part, these reckless acts are random and not intentional but (as we all are well aware) there are times when some cagers deliberately place you in harm’s way. In the 21st century, speed has become the taskmaster of us all. Fast foods, fast vehicles, faster gadgets to accomplish ordinary tasks are dominant in all advertising media. The spin doctor’s message prods us to believe - If it’s fast, it’s gotta be good, Eh Ollie? Mix in an ever expanding driving-age population plus immigrant new drivers and you have a formula for disaster that self-fulfills its prophecy daily in over-populated urban areas. That said; let’s examine the attitude of our biker nation. It is inherent in all of us to resent discourteous behavior but this emotion is more prevalent in the biker lifestyle then in other pockets of society. The old adage that ‘if you live long then sooner or later you’ll see everything’ has become gospel as I enter the last quarter of my mortal existence. In over 50 years of ridin’ two-wheeled machines; I have witnessed many witless traffic stunts by bikers (mostly my brothers) that were provoked as a direct result of an offensive incident. Once, while on a run back from PD13, one of my brothers took offence to being cut short by a Porsche punk. This caused road rage to enter the equation which spurred my bud to race the Porsche to get in front and then proceeded to slow and brake until traffic was super-slowed. The incident was

www.triplekupholstery.com ended (without a fatality) when I pulled our column onto the shoulder and waited as the traffic cleared. This example is extreme but we are all capable of this type of behavior (in one form or another) when we are pissed off by some disrespectful indiscretion. If there is one golden asphalt rule, it’s ‘don’t fuck with cagers while yur on your scooter’! Retaliate another way if the opportunity presents itself but never place yourself in a situation that would prevent you from returning to your loved ones. Hell, in the old days, I would follow the asshole home and sort him out in his driveway but all that is passé since I discovered one glaring truth – you are not riding alone! The next time you throw your leg over and fire her up – be aware that your empty backseat is populated by all the people that rely on you for sustenance, both materially and emotionally. These are the true victims when shit happens and disaster strikes deep. This month’s feature OCC member club is the Thundering Hearts Motorcycle Club. THMC was established in 1987 near Parry Sound, Ontario. The

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 19

Fighting for Your name was inspired by a John Mellencamp song of the same name and was appropriate, as the clubhouse was in a valley. “…Ride that Harley-Davidson in the hot summer heat… … In the valley of the Thundering Hearts”. The club’s webpage describes Thundering Hearts MC, “as a small, independent, non-profit motorcycle enthusiasts club dedicated to freedom, charity and the brotherhood of the highway. The focus of the club includes an emphasis on attending motorcycle charity events and giving back to the local community by organizing our own events such as food-drive house concerts, toy runs and other fund-raisers”. Interested parties should visit http://thunderingheartsmc.blog.com/ for more detailed info. One final plea before I’m done . . . let’s stop the carnage and resolve to take more care when we’re out there enjoying the ride. The stats are undeniably overwhelming that if you do any serious miles (15k plus per season) you will eventually be involved in some form of motorcycle accident. What is really surprising (to me) is that the number of single vehicle motorcycle accidents is on the rise. For the most part, single vehicle crashes are the direct result of inexperience or excessive speed - both of which can be eliminated by a generous application of common sense. The attitude of the driving public is changing and not for the better. Motorists have become more cynical and callous about sharing the road. It is my sincere wish that this article will possibly cause a change in your asphalt attitude and, by doing so, lower the chance of you and yours becoming fodder for another sad sixty-second report on the evening news. Cargill Bike Bash 2014

It was a grey day and the weather forecasts were bleak, at best as I loaded up my raingear, my camera and extra Mags on Petoonia and I set off to the west to attend this year’s running of The Cargill Bikefest. I was leaving a bit later than planned as I can always find something that has to be done in the office that needs to be attended to before heading out for the day, or the phone would ring or a quick check of my e mails while still standing, already in motion towards the garage, where Petoonia, not so patiently, waited, would result in me having to sit down and deal with this that of the other thing. Finally (Like ripping off a bandage.) turning and just bolting

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 22

to Petoonia (If she was turned the right way and I was physically capable of pulling it off (My imagination often writes cheques that my tired old, neglected body doesn’t have a hope in Hell of cashing!!) I had visions of me vaulting like Roy Rogers, Gene Auntry and all my wild west heroes, used to mount their horses, over the beer box landing flush into the saddle and with a cloud of dust, a mighty roar from Pe t o o n i a ’s fishtails and a hearty HI Ho….! You get the idea! Instead I eased my tired old carcass into the seat, backed her out of the garage fired her up, waved goodbye to Godzilla, Captain and Rosebud who were peering out the front window and got under way. I had heard much about this event over the years and was always curious about it, as so much great stuff has been written about it by many of our other contributors but I was always assigned other events and had never made the trip. This year, I thought I would just change things up a bit and in my ongoing effort to give myself some perspective and an overview of as many of the events and people that advertise with us as possible. This would mean not being able to attend one of the other events that has been a favourite of mine for the past number of years but I had the lovely and talented Sherri O’Irish on board and she would offer a fresh perspective on the other event which may be refreshing for the organizers and attendees. I know some will be disappointed at my decision as I have made many fast friends over in Mount Forest and really like their event but I have to make the decisions that are best for the Mag and our advertisers. This is beautiful country out this way with some pretty magnificent looking farms and some great scenery. Petoonia was running like a dream, happy to have her turn out to events with the Black Bitch 3 having chain issues, giving her a chance to get out there. She was like a fox on a wounded chicken and ate up the miles easily and hungrily and we enjoyed the ride through the ever-changing landscape that varied from lush, tree lined roads through rolling countryside to vast fields and back again and we soon found ourselves in Cargill, rolling down the long and beautiful driveway into the Fairgrounds that is the venue for this fabled event. The sky was still threatening like a dog with a bone but holding off …..for the time being; at least, as I found a spot to park Petoonia and gathered up my stuff while gazing around the beautiful property, scanning the grounds for familiar faces while pondering where to begin. Familiar faces started to appear almost immediately and I soon had my bearings and figured since it had

Cargill Bike Bash 2014

been a long ride in and I hadn’t even taken the time to grab a coffee or breakfast yet today, that the bar and the food truck would be a great place to start, so I headed in that direction, stopping to introduce myself to organizers and dropping off Mags on the way. They didn’t have 50 of course, but the beer they had was cold and wet and did the job. Now with a stop at the food truck and partaking in one of their mighty fine sandwiches I was in the right frame of mind to get on with my Roving Reporter duties. I wandered off to check things out and noticed that there were some vendors set up in a nice shady spot by the driveway so I swung on by only to find that a long-time friend Sharon (AKA 2 bucks or “Sticker Chick”) from the Great Canadian T Shirt Company in Sunny Owen Sound had a booth with all kinds of good stuff to sell! It was great to see her, as it had been a while since our paths had crossed. We got to shoot the shit a while before I headed off to check out the place. The attendance looked a little sparse at the moment, as a large number of bikes were out on a Poker Run and would be returning soon and others seemed to be waiting until they saw what Mother Nature was going to do with all those dark clouds. I

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 24

made my way around the Show and Shine area that had some great looking machines all vying for prizes and bragging rights but as I said a lot were out on the ride on their return the competition would be stepped up to an even higher level. There was a dyno tuning machine that was kept busy the whole day and was apparently booked solid and had a waiting list that would take a while to complete and the sweet roar of powerful engines resonated throughout the place constantly. The huge clean camping area was filling up fast as more and more rolled in throughout the afternoon. I took a quick stroll through and was very impressed and it was obvious that these folks came to party! All this Roving reporter stuff I was doing had worked up a thirst so another trip to the bar was in order with a stop along the way to check out the Boob sizing gizmo that was set up for those unsure of how they stack up. I didn’t know there was an official boob meter as I’d always just been able to judge by eye and in a pinch use my hands and such. It would be too big to carry on either Petoonia or even the trike so I’ll just stick with my methods but if there is ever a dispute I’ll know where to come to settle any arguments. This event has earned a great reputation over the years and has earned the respect and support in sponsorships from the Community and local businesses and they in turn show their appreciation by posting lists of those sponsors for all to see. It is a relationship that is working and the Biker Community benefits with a great annual event and show their support by attending every year in ever increasing numbers. The band “Dark Angel” was doing a fine job entertaining the crowd with some good old Rock’n Roll that had many up dancing/

Cargill Bike Bash 2014

There was suddenly a huge influx of bikes and people and it was apparent that those riders that were on the ride were back, hungry and thirsty and ready for the games to begin and the huge lot was filling up fast as late arrivals started to show up. This was a very competitive bunch here and there were obviously many long standing, good natured, rivalry’s that would be continued on again this year and into future years as a win in one game, one year, just means that the game is still on and the old; “Wait until next year” card is played. These games are well run and organized as they have been doing them for a while now and have it down pat, from the plank ride, slow race, ring toss, right down through the wiener bite, and the Spud hunt and The Shitter Toss (A new one for me; where the passenger tosses a roll of toilet paper at a series of buckets with toilet seats on top.) and were enjoyed by competitors and the huge crowd of on-lookers alike. They managed to get the last game in when the threatening skies decided that they were done just threatening and it started to rain. I took that as my cue to leave so I wandered through saying my goodbyes before stashing my camera in the beer box, suiting up in my Drover coat and heading home. It was a long wet ride all the way back but was well worth the trip, having gotten the opportunity to spend some time at a great event that has stood the test of time, and some great people. I might even assign this event to myself again next year. Thanks for your hospitality!

A lesson that should be taught in all schools . . And colleges

Back in September, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a social studies school teacher at Bobcaygeon (north of Peterborough Ontario ) public school, did something not to be forgotten. On the first day of school, with the permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed all of the desks out of her classroom. When the first period kids entered the room they discovered that there were no desks. ‘Ms.. Cothren, where’re our desks?’ She replied, ‘You can’t have a desk until you tell me how you earn the right to sit at a desk.’ They thought, ‘Well, maybe it’s our grades.’ No,’ she said. ‘Maybe it’s our Behaviour.’ She told them, ‘No, it’s not even your Behaviour.’ And so, they came and went, the first period, second period, third period. Still no desks in the classroom. By early afternoon television news crews had started gathering in Ms.Cothren’s classroom to report about this crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of her room. The final period of the day came and as the puzzled students found seats on the floor of the deskless classroom, Martha Cothren said, ‘Throughout the day no one has been able to tell me just what he/she has done to earn the right to sit at the desks that are ordinarily found in this classroom. Now I am going to tell you.’ At this point, Martha Cothren went over to the door of her classroom and opened it. Twenty-seven (27) War Veterans, all in uniforms, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk. The Vets began placing the school desks in rows, and then they would walk over and stand alongside the wall. By the time the last soldier had set the final desk in place those kids started to understand, perhaps for the first time in their lives, just how the right to sit at those desks had been earned. Martha said, ‘You didn’t earn the right to sit at these desks. These heroes did it for you. They placed the desks here for you. Now, it’s up to you to sit in them. It is your responsibility to learn, to be good students, to be good citizens. They paid the price so that you could have the freedom to get an education.

Don’t ever forget it.

Life is never simple when it comes to electronics and wires .... A Kansas farm wife called the local phone company to report her telephone failed to ring when her friends called - and that on the few occasions, when it did ring, her dog always moaned right before the phone rang. The telephone repairman proceeded to the scene, curious to see this psychic dog or senile lady. He climbed a telephone pole, hooked in his test set, and dialed the subscriber’s house. The phone didn’t ring right away, but then the dog moaned and the telephone began to ring. Climbing down from the pole, the telephone repairman found: 1. The dog was tied to the telephone system’s ground wire with a steel chain and collar. 2. The wire connection to the ground rod was loose. 3. The dog was receiving 90 volts of signaling current when the number was called. 4. After a couple of jolts, the dog would start moaning and then urinate. 5. The wet ground would complete the circuit, thus causing the phone to ring. Which demonstrates that some problems CAN be fixed by pissing and moaning. Thought you’d like to know. Two nuns, Sister Catherine and Sister Helen, are traveling through Europe in their car. They get to Transylvania and are stopped at a traffic light. Old Skool Ride

This month’s feature guy is Bob, and this beautiful 1938 UL is not only his first Harley-Davidson motorcycle but he received it as a basket case in a trade that saw his 1937 Chrysler Imperial Limousine with a supercharged 440 engine that Bob had been busily restoring for a number of years keeping himself busy since his retirement. Unfortunately for Bob while he was working on the car a brake part he was working on with a tool similar to a cutter broke off and a hot piece of metal the size of a toonie tore into his right cheek putting him in the hospital for a period of time and some reconstructive surgery on his cheek including a titanium plate. Needless to say after the accident Bob was not unhappy to see the car go after such an incident and his friend Duff really wanted the car and Bob was looking for a different project to keep himself busy in retirement. Duff had come upon the bike as a rolling chassis from a local bike shop owner named Brent Cross

THE RIDERS MAG ---- PAGE 32

who ironically was back in the early days a contributing writer to The Rider’s Mag back before he had opened his own shop and was working for the legendary Wymond Walkem as a mechanic back in those days. Bob says that he got a couple different stories about the origins of the bike, but he says that Brent had picked the bike up at a local estate auction, a local had built the bike and Brent felt that he could use parts of the bike in various projects that he either had on the go or felt he could use on a future project but in the end he swapped the bike out to Duff, and Duff in turn traded the bike off to Bob. Bob had been the proud owner of a 1950 Jawa motorcycle which he purchased used from a neighbor of his in the early 1960’s,

Old Skool Ride

he had always had a passion for riding and used to borrow a neighbors Indian square four when he was a young man but his father would never permit him to own a motorcycle threatening that if Bob ever bought a motorcycle and brought it home that he would smash it to bits with a sledge hammer, that was enough to discourage bob from buying a bike while living at home. That Jawa was a triumph of communist engineering I am sure as it was built in the former soviet republic of Czechoslovakia. I actually took a quick look and the company was around long before the soviets took over being formed in 1930, obviously the model Bob owned was built in the heyday of the Soviet Union being a 1950 model. Bob described it as a piece of junk that was hard to get parts for but it was the first bike he owned and he never had another until nearly 40 years later. He spent most of his life self employed as an electrician also holding tickets as a machinist and a millwright as well as having a talent for welding. He did well over his life turning his customers over to a trusted friend and employee to take care of his clients as he took his retirement at the age of 60, he was past age 70 by the time he laid his hands on this rare Harley with the aftermarket frame rolling chassis. Being all of the things listed above Bob set about putting this bike together and learning a lot along the way including how to locate and install an adapter onto the original transmission of this machine so that he could add an electric start to it as he felt that past age 70 he would never be able to actually kick start the bike. Bob says the adapter alone plus some expert assistance from Brent cost him over $4000 and he did all of the custom machine work and frame modifications himself to get the starter installed and ya know what he started that bike up and it ran better than my late 90’s evo. Of course there are bits of Bob all over this ride from the ground up wiring of the bike from front to back including detailed wiring diagrams in an owner’s manual that he designed himself including all the details on the

electric start, the signal lights which use a flasher and sensor from a metric bike which he concealed in a custom made aluminum housing. He made his own seat and matching tool bag on the rear bar, his own hand made gas tank reminiscent of the old coffin style fuel tanks on the cafe style sportsters, custom brass oil tank with custom brass oil filter to keep the oil flowing and just in case he says. He replaced the throttle cable saying the existing one was totally Mickey mouse and out of alignment not to mention completely missing a throttle return spring giving it involuntary cruise control. Bob changed up the handlebars, mirrors, chain guard, relocated the battery box to the front of the frame to allow space for the aforementioned starter motor as well as having to convert the primary drive over to the belt to also accommodate the electric start function. He says the front end on the bike came with the roller when he got the bike and gratefully the front brake matches the year of the front end so it has a disc brake on the front. The original drum brake is still on the rear wheel and lives inside an original combination sprocket and drum brake housing, Bob says the brake didn’t work worth a crap but

found that someone at some point had installed the wrong size piston inside the master cylinder which made what was known as a hope and pray rear brake into an absolutely worthless brake. After fixing the master cylinder Bob went ahead and made himself a custom brake pedal to go along with it. There are about a million other things that Bob spent laborious hours slaving over to make the bike absolutely perfect, it was hard to keep up with a guy who was approaching his mid 70’s who was so excited to get this bike out and ride it saying he decided after seeing the old WLC in our April mag that he was gonna make a sidecar for this bike knowing it was far too heavy to hold up and he really wants to ride the bike. The fact is that after he got this bike from Duff, Bob really got the bug and went back to him and bought an 883 Sportster that he wanted to make into a trike resigning himself to the fact that he would never be able to ride his 38 UL , it was even a surprise to his wife when he told me that once he finished with his Sportster trike conversion he was building a sidecar for the UL so he could ride that too. Special thanks to Bobs granddaughter Chas who was a sunshine girl the week before we did his shoot back in April of this year.

Bikers Church Going Sane in a Crazy World. God’s Spirit had lodged Matthew 11 in my mind and heart for a couple of weeks, and I kept hearing “Come to me all who are weary, and I will give you rest.” I needed that rest, so I went back to Psalm 46 and tried to connect it to Matthew 11:28-30. Bikers Church God”; He promises “rest”; Rest is a relief from hardship, pain, distress, and turmoil; It is the presence of Christ in our hard times; Come to him and find rest; Col. 1:15-17: Jesus is the glue that holds reality together. The Psalmist calls us to put our trust in God who holds all things together; The words “refuge” and “strength” speak of God’s security and power; Our security is not in the ground beneath our feet (remember Haiti or Chile?); God is our ultimate unshakeable reality and the greatest power of all. Just because I don’t see the sun that doesn’t mean it ceases to exist. When life gets hard, we need to stand still, to desist, to stop striving and to dwell on his presence. We need Jesus’ rest; God is omnipresent, he has gone nowhere. Be quiet, and listen. Psalm 91:7 Be still and know his presence. But we are more than survivors (Romans 8:3139; especially v. 37) We may be shaken, but we cannot be destroyed. The power by which we live and by which Jerusalem is sustained is the power of God. When things go south, we must learn NOT to rely on our abilities. Our power MUST come from a higher source; God is There, and He is Able; Be still and know his power. In Matthew 11:29-30, Jesus gives two more commands: “Take my yoke” and “learn from me.” Keep his easy yoke and light burden as your protection. Only do those things God has placed on the yoke you share with Jesus. Remember, he gives rest while he helps bear our load. All kinds of things may be

going wrong, but God remains unmoved and unchanged-He is constant, he is there, he is not silent, he has not moved-To know him is to know security even in the most hectic time. To know him requires time and stillness. We must sit with him, spend time with him, learn from him. We need time with our Father-We need to unravel, His presence is ours, our position is to be still with him and know him. Now What? So, life is going crazy-How do we go sane in a crazy world? How can we find firmness when things seem unsound? We must begin with a proper focus. Whatever consumes our attention soon overwhelms our senses and colors our perspective. Instead of being consumed by the problem, we should turn our face to the Lord. This week we must schedule time with God. We must stand still on God’s firmness and stability. We must learn to quit striving, to cease kicking, to be still and to be vulnerable to what God may be doing. We must embrace God as our sole refuge, as our primary source of satisfaction. This week find ways to create a space of peace in your hectic schedule. Take time to sit still. This week, when the bottom falls out, when God seems silent, when the world turns against you, when things get hectic. Be still, and know God’s power, presence, and person; And you’ll find that he is a genuine refuge in time of trouble. david.neals@nexicom.net Pastor Dave

I am headed to the East Coast with the boys. The bikes are beginning to roll into the Ottawa Nomads clubhouse where we will stay tonight. Good food, good company, and good times. Let the games begin! The next morning we ride into Quebec. We hook onto Highway 20 to Highway 30, which is the new bypass around Montreal. It costs a couple of bucks at a toll station. The bypass is well worth it if not well versed in the torturous city route. We are not stopping in the city this time because our friends have rode out west to another party. Quebec Police The Quebec Surete are waiting at the toll station. They are fixated by the baffles in our pipes. However, if there is a baffle all is okay no matter the brand of exhaust. On this trip, I found the police in every province very polite and for the most part professional. In Quebec, I said to the first group of officers that pulled us over that while firm, they were exceedingly polite. “What do I have to gain by being rude?” said the biggest one. I replied that on occasion, if there were no witnesses, I have felt that I would have been beaten or shot, the animosity towards me was so bad. I received a knowing look in Served and Protected in La Belle Prov- return. Methinks this ince. Me and Big Mike....the police in Quebec, NB, and NS apparently don’t must be a new way of dealing with us like us. However, the people do.

because I have gone through 45 years of impoliteness. The exception to this is if an officer is on an information fishing expedition. Of course, there is always the exception. One of the guys was riding in the passing lane, hemmed in by cars. He was slowly passing the cars in the curb lane. He could not speed up or slow down with the car in front and a female Surete officer behind. She followed him for 20 minutes. Frustrated, she gave him a ticket for riding too slow….95 kph in a 100 kph zone. I am sure all the male officers were impressed by her. Yeah, she is one of the boys now. Tough as nails, I am sure. Good for her! The polite officers told our pack that they would not have stopped us if we were not wearing our stuff. Take it off and you will not be stopped again. I politely declined. He politely said that I would get stopped every time an officer saw us. I politely said “Welcome to my life!” Our pack rode at 120 kph for the whole province without another issue. The speed limit is 100 kph for the most part but if staying within 20 kph of the speed limit most officers won’t bother you. Highway 30 merges back into Highway 20 on the south shore beyond Montreal. We rode east past the beautiful and historic Quebec City and onto Riviere-du-Loup where we made a right turn (south). Another 100 kilometers or so we passed the New Brunswick border and rode into Edmunston. The last town in Quebec is famous for those in the know... famous for its strip joint where anything goes with the girls from La Belle Province. Edmunston is a friendly small city of rugged FrenchEnglish-Acadian people. They know how to drink and party. They are also friendly to rebellious bikers. Acadians have no love for our government as they were persecuted and driven from Canada a long time ago. Now, you know who settled New Orleans and other French-oriented American communities. Edmunston We settle in, in Edmunston for the night at the top of New Brunswick. Gatekeepers MC from Nova Scotia ride 800 km up to meet us here. We eat pizza and drink beer surrounded by bikes in the motel parking lot in an impromptu party. Jeff (former Bacchus MC) from Fredricton NB offers up to help us fix any bikes needing fixing and Charlie from (Bacchus MC) Moncton offers up the You Pay us clubhouse for some socializing. runners. The shine-laden vehicles run these desolate, winding roads at high speed without lights to evade revenuers foolish enough to enter. Yeah, this is Whiskey Road. We have lost more than one biker traveling these roads late at night over the years. The Bacchus have great parties in here. Wreck’em races that are just as dangerous for spectators that get too close. The smart people climb a tree….a thick tree. The drivers are serious competitors and some of the best I have seen. The Venison doesn’t get better and the beer flows... Charlie comments “That pretty well sums it up Donny. The roads are even more dangerous; now they don’t cut the bushes out of the ditch. It’s where loud pipes really do save lives. But the moonshine still tastes great with that extra kick.” I walk outside the Edmunston motel the next morning and the Bacchus from St John are also here now. St John is in New Brunswick and St John’s is in Newfoundland. I have shared a room with Big Mike. I say to Big Mike “you didn’t brush your teeth this morning”. He corrects me “tooth”. Biker humour is the best. Riding the Best Highway in Canada The police (RCMP for the most part) in New Brunswick have always been polite to me and some are genuinely concerned for our safety. They also want us to transit the province as quickly as possible. I have been told more than once to ride as fast as we want as long as we are traveling through to Nova Scotia or Quebec. The caveats are to not scare Edmunston is at the top of New Brunsmotorists with wick, a province of rolling hills that tranhigh speed sition into the Appalachian Mountains to the south. passing and not to jeopardize anyone’s safety. The Trans Canada highway in New Brunswick is arguably the best in Canada. The long rolling hills offer long lines of sight and invite a fast pace. Pack Riding The ceremonial pack rides of a hundred or hundreds of bikes are usually reserved for special occasions like funerals. When traveling, we ride in packs of 3 to 10 bikes at varying speeds depending on local conditions, how we feel, and police tolerance so we can make good time. The Fast Pack has 10 bikes. It blasts off into the early morning mist as the sun begins to burn it off. The pack eases up to 140 kph and soon to 150. It settles in at close to 160. Exhilarating! This is safe on these lightly traveled highways with expert riders who are at one with their machines....and they tell me it is fun. The air is clean and the countryside pristine. The Faster Pack The Fast Pack goes faster and whittles down to 4 riders. The Faster Pack leaves the Fast Pack behind doing 150 to 180. The faster pack settles in at 170 to 180. The road is empty

The Slow Pack: Character Scars Speed is not always the cause of potential grief. One of the young guys has gone down at highway speed. His rear wheel has locked in the middle of the pack. He is an excellent rider but cannot hold her up. We are SAD and WORRIED. He is rushed to a trauma centre for suspected head injuries. After scanning, his noggin’ is okay and there are no broken bones. We are HAPPY. His bike is wrecked and does not survive. He is tough. He is also kinda pretty; so now he will have lots of road rash scars to make him look closer to us ugly guys….and of course, he will have more character (ya can’t be a pirate with two legs, now can you?). and Halifax to Bridgewater. RENT A FREEZER FULL OF ICE The Gate FOR YOUR WEEKEND PARTY Keepers warn us to ride the speed limit. The police here will sometimes give tickets for 3 klicks over the posted limit although 10 kph over is generally okay. The police here do not like us for the OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK reason Mon - Fri 10 to 7 Sat - Sun 10 to 5 simple we might stay. However, they are East Coasters and cannot help being friendly. The Titanic Cemetery(s) Three of the Titanic Cemetery(s) are in Halifax Nova Scotia. The Titanic sailed on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England on April 10, 1912. For many of the recovered dead, Halifax, Nova Scotia is where the story ended. On Sunday, April 14 at 11:40 pm, the Titanic struck a giant iceberg and by 2:20 am on April 15, the “unsinkable ship” was gone. The first vessel to arrive at the scene of the disaster was the Cunard Liner RMS Carpathia and she was able to rescue more than 700 survivors. On Wednesday, April 17, the day before the Carpathia arrived in New York, the White Star Line dispatched the first of four Canadian vessels to look for bodies in the area of the sinking. On April 17, a Halifax-based Steamer set sail with a minister, an undertaker and a cargo of ice, coffins and canvas bags. She arrived at the site on April 20 and spent five days carrying out her grim task. Her crew was able to recover 306 bodies, 116 of which had to be buried at sea. The Steamer left for Halifax with 190 bodies. After eight days of searching, the Halifax ship Minia was

only able to find 17 bodies, two of which were buried at sea. The Canadian government vessel CGS Montmagny recovered four bodies. The SS Algerine, which sailed from St. John’s, Newfoundland found one body. The bodies were unloaded on the Halifax waterfront and horse-drawn hearses brought the victims to the temporary morgue in the Mayflower Curling Rink. Only 59 of the bodies placed in the morgue were shipped out by train to their families. The remaining victims of the Titanic were buried in three Halifax cemeteries. Most of the gravestones, erected in the fall of 1912 are plain granite blocks. In some cases, h o w e v e r, families, friends, or other groups chose to commission a larger and Titanic Cemetery in Halifax more elaborate gravestone. All of these more personalized graves, including the striking Celtic cross and the beautiful monument to the “Unknown Child” are located at Fairview Lawn Cemetery. The Welcome to Nova Scotia Raid The police raided the Gate Keepers main clubhouse the previous night to welcome our arrival in town. They have also been kind enough to surround the whole area and blockade the clubhouse for our safety. I feel right at home….for we are the eye of the hurricane and chaos swirls all around. They are uptight at first but soon relax. Friendly attitudes rules our stay and the police begin to help with little things and do not try to ruin the party. My God! This will be Worse than Last Year When the lady at the motel front desk saw me she exclaimed “my god this will be worse than last year!” I says “Who was here last year?” She says “Bikers; but their bikes were not as big and they were kids.” I says “If you have any problems or concerns, please come and see me...” After she calms down, she confides that she wants to buy a Harley and asks my advice. Her friends think she should get a Sportster but has ridden a Softail and likes it. I explain that a Softail is easier to ride because amongst other factors, the center of gravity is lower. The Pick-a-Pig I am standing with some of the Gate Keepers MC in front of our motel. The main party is tomorrow (Saturday) night, with others planned on successive nights at other Gate Keeper clubhouses in other towns, and in PEI with the Charlottown guys. I ask a woman with the Gate Keepers where the local bar is? She says “The Pick-a-Pig is down the hill. “Oh” says I. She says “ Wait here, I will get you a paper bag for you to cover her face...that way you won’t go limp.”

On The I am totally bummed that I got no response on my plea to get a couple sponsors for the ladies Friday the 13th shirts. I feel bad that I missed getting this column into last months mag but the insanity that is my life these days is so busy that I often can’t seem to find time for all the things I want or need to do but I do manage to cram in all the things I have to do. The math is simple, ladies shirts are between $6 and $9 each and we have a year coming up with the traditional 3 cold weather Friday the 13th ‘s being February, March and November. I wanna get our good friend Beau to print us up 100 snazzy ladies, beaters, crop tops, spaghetti straps, or whatever he’s got hidin around or can lay his hands on. If we put two sponsors on the back of the ladies shirts proudly associating them with our readers favorite feature for $3 / shirt, if it runs more than $6 I will kick in the difference between the $600 raised and whatever the total cost is, why cause this is my thing and besides doing the feature articles I like doin the titty thing in Dover, why else right. What’s a retired guy got to do with his time anyways? Lots but that’s beside the point for sure, I may even have to juggle my Florida vacation around in March so I can be in Dover on March 13th next year but it’s one of the things I do. The other is features, the boss (J.B.) and I do the features, pictures, and stories, those of you who have either been featured or photographed and interviewed for The Mag and are due to appear know us, we are cramming this into our insane schedule as well and I have a few trips coming up and need some volunteers as well. I have a planned trip the last weekend of September into the Toronto and east area so depending on where the bikes are we will travel the environs and shoot and interview, our maximum should be about 8 bikes for the weekend, couples make it easier as we get a twofer in one location and no travel. All of you that are in the Toronto area, and you know who you are as I have already contacted you by email I will be closing the deal in the next couple of weeks, if you can’t

Road

with J.R.

accommodate our schedule you will have two choices, wait another year for another trip or come down to Burlington either this fall or next spring. I also have a couple of shoots to pick up in Niagara which are gonna happen on a weekday this September when we can find an agreeable date, I am missing a special construction bike so please if you have a special construction bike I need you on my list, there’s a trike in Niagara that has gone awol, this is not new for this owner who has had several nice bikes built, but history says he asks to get in The Mag then sells it before we get to shooting it, you know who you are sir! Looking ahead besides special construction I am always looking for vintage and I have what is reportedly a recently restored, by my good friend Sissy, panhead. I will be arranging to shoot in Toronto last weekend of September but we are always in need of more ok? I won’t be able to schedule any more this fall as time is gone for us but we will entertain anyone who wants to ride to our area for a shoot but we do hit the road again in April and are looking for bikes in all categories including ladies ok? Feature bikes, both men’s and ladies especially special construction and vintage, email me here please or if you are computer challenged get your kids or grand kids to do it, I got rid of my post office box 2 years ago reach me for shirts or features at theridersmag@gmail. com and I did still keep my office phone number from The Mag 905-631-5890, I did ditch the 800 service when I ditched bell but I did save a lot in expenses. See you out there, on the road.

MALICIOUS CYCLE & CLOTHING GRAND OPENING It started out as a cruddy looking day, all dark and grey and threatening rain as got my gear together and checked my list for stuff that I had to get done and the most logical thing was to get some doe on the way to Scarborough and the rest on the way back but what needed to be done required more carrying capacity than was provided by either Petoonia or the Trike affectionately known as Black Bitch 3 so I would be driving my F150 BB#2 so as to best conserve time and getting stuff wet, should it rain. I arrived early to the property to find both Hankster along with his lovely bride setting up that fine looking Boothill Hearse display in the front parking lot. Bruce from Dynotunes was also there setting up for a busy day. I parked and went over to talk awhile and check out the new stuff that Hank has to offer in the way of urns and custom made silver lockets with a motorcycle theme to them that he has stated to add to his line. Bruce was very pleased with his new location and figures it was in the best interest of his business to have made the move. He’s a great guy and I wish him well. They were just getting things going and I walked over to where Condo and a crew were having some difficulty with the barbecue or rather the spit that had been shearing the pin that connected it to the rotor and the pig was waiting to get cooked. I watched for a while but couldn’t add anything constructive to solve their problem so I wandered off in search of Clint or Bryan and got some pictures along the way. I found Clint and he gave me a quick tour of what has turned out to be a fantastic looking store, well thought out and well laid out and it was obvious that there was a lot of time and effort put into getting this store up and running and you could see the pride on Clint’s face as he showed me around and gave me an overview of what they offer there. Aside from a huge selection of the most up to date 81 Support items they carry some of the hard to get items that people usually have to go to the west coast or down to the States to get or have someone who is going there to bring it back for them. They will be adding more to their lines as they go and will keep on top of trends and new items as they come up. When I came back out the lot was really starting to fill up with people bikes and stuff, they seemed to be making some headway in getting the pig turning on the barbecue, Hankster had an audience hanging around his Hearse and Bruce was all ready to do some fine tuning. I would have liked to spend the day here but I had a busy afternoon ahead and the weather was now absolutely beautiful and I now regretted having to be driving around in the truck. I said my goodbyes and made my way out of the lot and headed off to do what I had to do. It really is a fantastic store. Drop in and check it out!

STICKER

STORIES

In accordance with our ongoing effort to better represent as many areas of our huge Biker Community with a biker from that Community, I have enlisted the services of a long-time friend and real rider who has knocked around all over the place but now lives and works in Owen Sound as she is the proud owner of The Great Canadian T Shirt Company. I will now make way for the lovely lady to introduce herself………. Hello everyone! Some of you may know me as Sticker Chick, or Two Bucks, or even Sharon. I learned to ride in the Hamilton area with my ruthless friends challenging me on the low level bridge “one hand” they said! and mountain access switchbacks. It’s been quite the life with almost 30 years of riding my own bikes and partying with some of the best people in the entire world - that’s you people! Some of you may remember me from when I sold helmet stickers at swap meets and bashes, sometimes as a real vendor and sometimes as a biker out of the saddlebags. Some of you may remember waaaaaaay back to the Two Buck days and if you don’t it just cannot be explained. And of course, many of you have never met me . . . yet! I started riding my sister’s moped when I was about 9 or 10 years old. My parents were unaware that mopeds are the gateway drug to Harley Davidsons. Riding progressed to my brothers dirt bike then on to my first street bike in 1985. Bought my first Harley in 1990 and still riding Harley. I ride to work, ride to appointments, ride to social events, and ride just to ride. Now I am following another fork in the road as Critter has asked me to cover the Grey/Bruce/Huron area for The Riders Mag. How gnarly is that? I get to ride to new events, ride to old events, meet new people, and hang out with my old people! I am definitely one lucky chick! See you soon!

Ladies and their Harleys

Our last lady of the year is Myra and she describes herself as a polish Canadian, she comes from a large city in her homeland that she says has 3 universities. Myra and her husband were looking for a way out of Poland at a time when there was significant political unrest in her home country. She says that she never really wanted to leave home but felt that if she was to have a future it would have to be somewhere other than there. After reviewing her options she learned that Canada was accepting immigrants in certain vocations which were lacking at the time and one of the options was in health care as a physiotherapist, she says that she got her degree and returned to the Canadian embassy to apply to immigrate to Canada. She says in all of her visits to the embassy there were pictures of mountains out west and Niagara Falls and the like, when she was allowed to come to Canada she was sent to Chatham in November. It looked nothing like the pictures that she had seen and was much colder and snowier than she expected and although she went to work

THE RIDERS MAG ---- PAGE 42

she was not completely happy with where she had ended up. That changed over time as she had the opportunity to travel some and see other parts of Canada, and as the politics of her homeland sorted themselves out she was able to visit with family back home , who still to this day say she speaks her native polish with a big English accent. Sadly for Myra her husband died in the old country while visiting and he was the proud owner of a Harley Davidson sportster, she says that she packed the bike up and shipped it back to Canada and put it in her garage, saying she had a sentimental attachment to the bike but it sat. She had friends in her neighbourhood and work who rode and she really wanted to ride but didn’t know anything about motorcycles but her friends convinced her that she should go for it.

Ladies and their Harleys

Myra took a defensive driving course and also her motorcycle course and was introduced to her current guy Dick who has been a lifelong rider and a shovel head devotee, she did a lot of riding with him through those first 18 months as she moved from M1 through to her full license and even took a trip down to Tennessee and rode the dragons back through the mountains between Tennessee and the Carolinas. Once she had taken that ride and a few others she felt that it was time to let go of that sportster and the sentimental attachment she had to it and get onto her bike, when Dick first suggested that she check out his buddies heritage Springer Myra says that when she saw it for the first time she was certain the bike was just too big for her and she tried to dismiss it but Dick and his buddy were adamant that she check it out explaining all the virtues of the softail and its lower center of gravity despite the additional 200 pounds versus the sporty. It only took one ride and Myra knew she had found her ride, she bought the bike from Dick’s buddy who had purchased Dicks original shovel and traded it in on the heritage and was wanted to upgrade to the ultra classic. She immediately started personalizing the bike to her own tastes adding a removable tour pack for the planned long rides she was going to take and adding two deer whistles to the front as she is very afraid of hitting a deer in some of the areas she rides in and Dick got her a spirit bell. Their first trip was to the east coast a few summers back during a particularly cold summer saying it

rained most of the way and the ride was absolutely miserable but once they arrived and she rode the Cabot Trail, the Confederation Bridge and saw the Bay of Fundy it was all worth it and she was hooked on her new ride and taking long trips on her bike. The following year they planned a Christmas time trip to Florida and Dick had rented a trailer large enough for both bikes well in advance of the trip and not surprisingly when he went to get the trailer the one the guy had for him was not big enough to take both of their bikes. To say that Myra was bummed out was an understatement, but Dick promised to rent her a bike in Florida to make up for it, she says they rented a bike from the dealer in Orlando and she got a brand new fat bob to ride, it wasn’t her heritage Springer and it took some getting used to riding with pegs again as opposed to running boards but they road from Orlando all the way down to Key West and she racked up 1000 miles on the rental over the course of the week had a fabulous time and Dick said the rental was reasonably enough priced that if he was gonna do it again he may consider just flying down and renting two for two weeks and save the drive south dragging a trailer. Last year they rented a cottage in west Virginia and again

Myra was amazed by the scenery the mountains and the switchbacks saying it was so close to Chatham, so different and the roads for the first few days were very scary but once she got used to the steep grades and the switchbacks in the mountains that she loved every minute of it and would go back again sometime soon. We did shoot Dick’s bike at the same time as Myra’s and it will appear in an upcoming issue, he has a group of buddies he has been riding with for many years and says that he and his best bud had been to Daytona for I think it was the 50th anniversary and that the 75th is coming up in another year or so and he is planning to go to celebrate but Myra is not completely sure if she is gonna go yet as he is retiring soon but she is still unsure of whether she wants to work a few days a week and ride or work part of the year and spend the rest in warmer climes down south, but she has until march of 2016 to decide. Myra is thrilled with her bike and has no plans what so ever to change it, trade it or buy another she just needs to decide how and when she wants to retire because the one thing she knows for sure is she wants to do lots more riding and explore the south. I dunno by the odometer she’s already clocking better than 10,000 kms a year for the past 4 years she’s had this ride so she’s out there enjoying the wind in her face.

Motorcyco Beau So now we come to the final stretch of the summer’s activities and I keep wondering where the hell it all went. Over the years I have heard of every kind of “global warming” conspiracy a person can imagine but in the end all I know is winter was way too freaking long then there was no Spring and the Summer has been the most confusing one in years with most of the weekends being sunny and warm but almost always some stray rogue shower seemed to pop up just as you were riding halfway between destinations and any week night activities that got planned like bike nights etc were always held hostage to the clouds somewhere in the sky threatening to rain down on us. Back in mid July I had the pleasure of participating in the 2nd annual Ride for Autism Ottawa that was held out in the west end at the Villa Lucia restaurant near Andrew Haydon park. It was an absolutely fantastic day for a ride complete with clear skies and that kind of warmth that makes you restless to head out and feel the breeze. We not only set up the Riders Mag tent but with the assistance of a half a dozen of the Celtic

from the Far East.... of Ontario that is!

Brothers we made ourselves useful by helping the ride’s executive out with everything that had to be done from determining the departure plans for the riders, to acting as traffic wardens so everyone got out in to traffic safely for the ride. Some also offered to help to handle the cooking chores for when the riders returned after the rides as well to help with the baked goods table & assist in the games. While the turnout was decent I would be lying if I didn’t say that I had actually hoped for a much larger turnout from the area’s riding clubs and while I know that this is a tough year and people have to pick and choose what rides they show up for I felt the Autism ride is one of those causes that touches just about everyone whether by a family member or by a friend or neighbor but it seems like it was mostly independent riders who showed up. I have to give honorable mention to Barry Horan & Bad Apple from the Cornwall CMC who were kind enough to get up in the truly wee hours of the morning and drive up to take part in this ride. Barry is a strong supporter of the TCB and it was greatly appreciated that they both came up all that distance plus participate in the ride itself and then return back home. Some others taking part in the ride were Tom Allain and the “Lovley” Nathalie Lacasse, who was accompanied by several other members of the B.A.C.A. (bikers against child abuse) showed up to show their support. For those of us who know Tom and consider him a friend, know he participates in rides or events that involve just about any cause involving children, his being there was no surprise. When Tom said they could have gone with a group of other friends down to Kingston for a weekend bike party but decided they had to come and show support for this particular event because it was a local one and their next door neighbor has a young son with autism who spends a lot of time at Tom’s house including in their swimming pool and taught this young boy how to swim. So while none of Tom & Nathalie’s actions aren’t surprising to me they do make me even prouder to call them personal friends and valued members of Ottawa’s motorcycle community. Last year they both were fundamental in

Motorcyco Beau the Ride for Noah, and while sadly young Noah succumbed to his brain cancer in October they have now set the 2nd Annual Ride for Hope and this year the ride will be dedicated to help a young girl named Madi who was diagnosed with juvenile type 1 diabetes and also has congenital heart defects and had to have heart surgery in February of 2014. She is still dealing with many ongoing health issues. I intend to do my damndest to be there and show Tom and Nathalie the same support that they show others and I hope that there will be a large turnout for the event. As in the previous years, the Mayor of Ottawa, Jim Watson attended the event to show his support and following his speech to send the motorcycle riders off on the ride he mentioned he was going to be heading out to attend second autism event later in the morning except this event involved horses instead of motorcycles. Mayor Watson got into the true spirit of the ride and was kind enough to put on one of the t-shirts I designed and made up for this event. This ride for autism is the brain child of Dave & Noella Kuhnle, who themselves have two granddaughters who are autistic. Somehow their enthusiasm is infectious and the joking and clowning around while everyone was having coffee and donuts spilled out into the departure activities where I think some of the TCB were reliving their past careers as school patrols when they were kids as they acted as traffic wardens. One of the shows sponsors went that extra mile to really get into the spirit and donned a roman soldiers costume and became the lead traffic warden. Believe me, seeing a roman soldier armed with a stop sign with a four foot handle in his hands succeeded in grabbing the attention of any the automobile traffic as he stepped onto the road and motioned for them to stop while groups of riders moved out and headed on their way. There was a number of booths set up for children as well and one of those was a face painting booth and Yoda from the TCB really got into the spirit of things by having an autism

NEW LOCATION When the riders NOW OPEN! returned a few hours later 7174 Bank Street, everyone was smiling and many remarked that they Metcalfe, ON K0A 2P0 truly enjoyed the route (613) 821-9090 they had been sent on Tim & Peri and which Dave himself www.bamachine.ca had developed out of several other rides he had taken over the years and figured it would be a pleasant change for many of the riders. The rest of the afternoon was spent by people mostly sitting around enjoying the the company of the other riders and taking advantage to fill up on burgers and hot dogs, most of which were cooked up with great care and lots of jokes by Mike Bossio of the TCB. Dabozz has most likely cooked over ten thousand hamburgs and hot dogs in his 40+ years of participating in motorcycle events and rides and in the end I think everyone is looking forward to helping participate in the Ride for Autism in 2015. On what I should say was a sad note, about a week later one of the legends of the Ottawa area motorcycle community headed out on his “last” ride. For over 50+ years, Eddy “Egg Roll” Doy-Yat, was a well known and respected member of both the motorcycle & hot rod

(613) 392-8433 www.makeitroar.com communities and who if you were lucky enough to know him, you couldn’t help but like him and if you didn’t know Eddy, well you missed out on a truly good thing. The “lovely” Bette & I accompanied by Dabozz rode down to the memorial chapel early in the evening figuring we would just drop in and give our condolences to the family and after 45 minutes or so we would split. But within a half an hour the memorial rooms filled up with large numbers of grey-bearded tattooed men, wearing everything from Harley t-shirts to suits and ties many accompanied by ladies of all ages who wore their “Sunday best” to honor Eddy. Each and every one of these people came out to help celebrate Eddy’s life and not spend time mourning his death. I suppose if I had to think of one thing that younger riders can never really experience until time allows them to pay their dues is that amazing feeling of connection that fills a room as men and women who have shared decades of friendship and brotherhood gather together to remember the good times and bad. Not to bemoan the passing of a brother, but rather to celebrate his life and to all offer up their favorite stories about the individual who has passed on. In this instance the stories about Eddy were fast & furious and soon the laughter was everywhere including the hallways and the parking lot. Hearing everyone reminisce about Eddy was what I guess we hope all our friends will say about us one day. That we were all rascals and crazy as hell but that most of all, we were true brothers and friends. The sadness of his departure will never hold more place in our thoughts or our hearts than the happiness we all shared while we were all together. Thanks to Eddy I got to be reminded about what I love most about being a biker. Why I wouldn’t have changed the way I have lived my life and I also want to thank Eddy for allowing us the opportunity to meet up with some great people that we have all come to know along the way. Eddy was 76 when he passed and up until just few short weeks before he died he was still riding his Harley and still heading to the Tim’s to making people laugh. The next day was even more crowded with people paying their respect to Eddy and his family. From one-percenters to not, he brought hundreds & hundreds of Ottawa’s motorcycle community together for one more time and I think we all owe Eddy thanks for reminding us all of our roots. Until we meet again in Valhalla Eddy...Keep your motor running! I also would like to say a special thanks to a good friend to not only myself but to many of the old guard of Ottawa’s motorcycle community, Grant Harrison who was not only there for Eddy but he was instrumental in seeing that our community was made aware of Eddy’s sudden passing.

Notifying many of us, we were able to attend, to show our respect and in my case able to help get the word out to others. Once again, Thanks! Grant! Just a few short days later we attended the outdoor memorial of Bruce “Bam-Bam” McGuire’s mother. Bruce is another person who is well known in the Ottawa bike community and was involved with trikes for well over 30 years. Bette & I joined up with Dan Allaston, owner of New Moon Tattoo Studios for the whole ceremony to pay our respects to the McGuire Clan. Bruce worked and managed Dan’s west end studio for over 20 years, and the two of them had first met through me. I have always joked that the jury is still out on whether that was a good idea or not. Personally I had been trying to get a hold of Dan for a couple of weeks prior to this memorial for a variety of things including him finishing up my one arm. Then I noticed that he had his right hand all bandaged up from an accident. I realized that is why I had not heard from him but I continually kept ribbing him that it was apparent to me that he would go to any extreme to get out of tattooing me. Sorry! Dan but I just couldn’t resist one more dig! This past weekend, Wrench and I headed out to the Big Daddy’s Cowpaddy that takes place north of the village of North Augusta and about 25 minutes north of Brockville. This is the 3rd year for Big Daddy’s and I have attended all three and as each year goes by this event just keeps getting better and better. The grounds for the event are perfect with numerous clearings for campers to set up and because you have a choice you don’t get that cramped feeling when everything

is in one place. Another one of the features that I really enjoy about the layout of Big Daddy’s is that the rodeo area, which boasts even more camping and where the majority of the trailers and motor homes go to park, is in a lower meadow. Because of that a person can watch all the rodeo events taking place from ground level or you can view all the events from the upper rim of the campgrounds. I must say it provides for one helluva panoramic view of the whole event. Again this year the rodeo component of Big Daddy’s Cowpaddy was in the capable hands of all those good folks from the Capital City Bikers Church. Hillbilly,

Nelia and all their Bikers Church rodeo crew have had years to learn how to not only run a successful and well organized motorcycle rodeo but also how to make it fun at the same time. After an initial walkabout Wrench and I found ourselves a nice little shady spot out of the direct sun because by one o’clock it was easily 30 degrees outside. Once MOTORCYCLE & CUSTOM CAR/TRUCK NIGHT we found that right spot, SHOW & SHINE GAMES we set up our chairs and sat back to take in the 50/50 DRAW PRIZES events. Just before the whole thing got started we were Eisenberg’s, Neil and the “lovely” Kim, joined by Todd Clapp, Bruce Beaven, and even my two more cousin, J.C. The list could go on and on characters I have called brothers for but mostly I suppose I want everyone to decades and decades, Doug Taylor and know that if you are ever looking for an Mike Smith. They had also figured getting event to attend next year in early August out of the sun was a stellar idea, not to and you are looking for a good time with mention it takes a little longer for your great people then this is the event for beer to warm up. whelmed with the community support these guys had, the bar parking lot was full, the apartment parking lot across the street, full and both sides of the street lined with bikes, later I would learn there were 147 bikes registered plus passengers, an awesome turnout. The ride drifted thru the county, making stops in Emeryville, Leamington, even at the Sunshine camp, the ending spot was at of the areas’ finest biker bars...yes the CBG’S.... COLCHESTER BAR AND GRILL. Julie and her crew do a remarkable job getting everything ready for the 200 some people coming that will be thirsty and hungry. The parking lot quickly became full, and bikes lined the side street and other areas around the bar, as usual everyone enjoyed their food and drinks, the band played. At the end of the day the Bad Examples gave the Sunshine Camp ....get this...a check for $ 18,000.25...that’s right eighteen thousand dollars and twenty five cents... AWESOME JOB GUYS... itself, the ride around was very nice, although there is a lot of motels, gas bars, restaurants closed down, at times distance between open establishments were miles apart. Then off to the bridge, could have taken the ferry to the island but I opted to ride around, probably took an extra few hours at least. The bridge was spectacular, just as the pictures I had seen, and now I get to ride it. What beautiful territory there, got over 700k just on the island itself, the bridge to the island was free but cost $18 to travel back. Up the East side of New Brunswick to the top where we again entered Quebec, the Gaspese trail next, this time I am doing it lower to higher so as the water is on my right side, and I don’t have to look over passing cars or anything to see the ocean. After this we headed to Algonquin Park where the leaves on the trees are already changing color, the reds and yellows in the trees are very nice but also a sign of winter and the end of riding season. So if you’re into the color rides for leaves and fall it is very close to your time to get to these parks to view before it’s too late. I was gone 9 days and logged 6674k on my bike, a very nice ride and gas only cost me $531. Condolences to the Family and friends of Former D&M Harley Davidson Owner Dave Metcalf.
