Fighting for Your Finally, and thanx to the vision of our intrepid publisher, I have been given the green to post an article showcasing the lighter side of our lifestyle. The following is far removed from an article on biker’s rights but it is, nonetheless, a tribute to the love of the machines that have molded our character and forged our steadfast resolve to freely live this life!

When does it strike? That sensa on that propels you forward and suddenly you find yourself hanging around a motorcycle dealership. Is it age demographics, stress management, a need for speed, the sensa on of freedom, or a desire to be no ced? What changes take place in the chemistry of the brain that send the message to the inner self - the me has come to mount up and ride! Right now, at this very moment, there is a brand new motorcycle, packed in a crate or strapped to a pallet, that is des ned to interact with some unsuspec ng schnook, somewhere in the world, who has no idea he (or she) is about to become one of the ‘leather people’. You see them all the me. Spend some me in a motorcycle showroom (or at a bike show) and witness the transforma on. Awwww, c’mon honey, I just wanna look! Powerful unseen forces are at work here! All are factors that significantly alter organized thought pa"erns and reduce all logic to one basic denominator. I go"a ride! There it is . . . the vacant expression, the fixated stare - reminiscent of Michael Corleone’s Sicilian Thunderbolt in The Godfather. Choppers Custom Works Open House Selkirk, that 4 corner village on Lake Erie among farms that now grow tall crops of hydro windmills (hopefully they’ll be harvested). Haldimand electricity, being privately owned, is the most expensive in Ontario, so we’re told. For those who have followed my some mes rambling accounts of rides I’ve been on, you may no ce the story starts here, beginning with the cat pouncing to wake me up, cu ng the grass before se ng off, standing with coffee in hand looking out at the pouring rain, describing the croaking frogs in our lily pond. Finally, I have a story to tell about Selkirk itself, and the latest incarna on as a biker village with its own brand new bike store. I have to tell you, before I start wri ng about the grand opening, we must see its recent history, going back 30+ years when, for a me, it may have jus fiably been called “O awa South”. On the grass footprint of a building that used to reside on the corner, where there are lime green picnic tables beside Choppers Custom Works (under the crane where one of the choppers hung 60 feet in the air for the grand opening), there stood the infamous “Blue Water tavern” (a real choke and puke dive – foul wreaking toilets and all), for it was there that the Hon. John C. Munroe (yes he of Hamilton airport fame) got a black eye, which he later described to Parliament as “falling in the shower”. Howls of laughter ensued from the people of Selkirk, who had watched the punch up. It was his co age in the middle of ‘millionaire’s row’ which saw the likes of Pierre Trudeau, Jean Chré en, and portly French speaking cabinet ministers sunning themselves at weekends during the summers. Back in ’78, then Polish Cardinal, Karol Józef Wojtyła took a stroll with his friends the Hudecki family, and re red Bishop Ryan (both residents of the row) along the lakeshore, stopping at our co age to give his blessing to our basement build (whilst my father cursed, and swore, at the more than 2000 breeze blocks he hand concreted in place). This was rather nice, since Karol was on his way to Va can Conclave where he was proclaimed Pope John Paul II – yes, the Pope has blessed our co age. The devil also visited Selkirk for the Interna onal Plowing match in 1996, when rain solidly poured for the month preceding, and the only thing that sold were T-shirts adver sing “I survived Selkirk Mudfest ’96”. We’ve had at least one Mafia Don live on the row, and on the far side of the creek, we had a thriving drug opera on in the 90’s,

with an unsolved murder of a drug enforcement agent. Fast forward to 2013. The li le four corners village of Selkirk has changed li le. 4 churches, The Sunflower restaurant, Town and Country general store/Beer & LCBO, the CIBC, an que store, hair dressers, library, DIY brew barn, wood yard, Sears outlet, gas sta on, and now has a combined Cycle shop, and co age industry gi store in what was Lindsay Home Hardware (which changed hands, grew, and moved 2 minutes out of town). Many of these

enterprises sport “Bikers Welcome” signs – it’s not just your average stop on the lakeshore bike trail to Port Dover (see Friday 13th, everyone else does). Now to the main event of this story: WELCOME, WELCOME. “CHOPPERS CUSTOMS WORKS”, TOM, AND AUDREY O’MARRA. Tom was born in Dunnville (that place where gasoline is almost always 4 cents cheaper than Toronto, home of the Mudcat Fes val, and the most bodacious fireworks display that Saturday at dusk – you should be there). Tom met Audrey at a grade 8 dance, and married her many years later in 1980. Originally, Tom was a car fana c, with a Chevelle (thoroughly in to wrenching four wheelers); but he switched over to bikes about 20 years ago – well maybe a bit longer. His dad was in to motorcycles, and (as a kid), Tom was always found on a snowmobile, or his dirt bike with friends – and he had a bike when they were married (it’s always been in the blood). Too many wives refuse their husbands wish to ride a bike once they marry; Audrey’s thinking is that ‘if you’re going to stop someone from doing what they love doing,
THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 8
then you’re really not in a good rela onship’. She hears it a lot from men who enter the shop with that desirous gleam in the eye, only to leave with a sigh, and the forlorn statement ‘the old lady would never go for it’. Presently there’s an 89’ Skinny painted So ail that looks brand new, with only 16,000Km on it, and probably ten grand’s worth of extras, going for only $8 thousand – that’s pre y phenomenal. There’s a clean looking hundredth anniversary Road King with 6,000Km on it going for fi een, a bright red lowered, chopper with open primary, metric cruisers, and the couple of choppers Tom has built including a ghoulish painted monster bike. Take a look. Tom’s got the equipment, and the know how, to work on any year of your Harley Davidson, and has a well thought of name in the work he’s done (nobody has a bad word to say about him, his work, his prices, or speed to do the job). Tom will take a pan head apart to fix the problem, just as expertly as he will ground up weld a custom chopper around a frame, and send it to expert paint – you really need to talk to him. He doesn’t charge what the Harley dealerships are required to bill for the hours on the job they do, he’s way more in touch

with the strain on your wallet. He has the customized open trailer that will pneuma cally drop to the road, allowing a bike to be pushed on at ground level, and he has the closed trailer. His mechanics, working on the Harleys, are his sons Joe, and Mike wrenching along side him, Craig Frith does all the general work, and his mechanic doing everything metric is Aaron Desrochers. He’s got a tame custom painter who sprays anything but tame subjects to a bike, an electrician, him and his sons are welders, it’s work shops will have moved to the back of the store, where it’s clean, secure, well lit – a professional work place that can easily take at least 10 bikes in plenty of surrounding space (likely by the me you’re reading this). Lets hope the government doesn’t give him any hassle as he applies to reRE-zone the homes back to residen al again. As with most small business, Tom opened Choppers in
a garage, back in 2007 – his brothers heated all steel and concrete big rig accommoda ng garage (across the road from his own home to be exact), the property was rezoned commercial to accommodate. In 2009, based on the speed of growth, he took down his own garage board by board, had the pad poured, and built a secure heated garage on his own property, just 10 paces off his back deck, causing the whole place (and his wife’s li le shed) to be rezoned commercial as well! In 2011, Home Hardware moved 2 minutes out of Selkirk, and le the property idle un l the owner renovated the front, and interior late last year. Tom consolidated the two garages in to the one store on the four corners, moved in, and is now servicing bikes, rebuilding, and selling new, and used parts as well as his own private custom builds. He’s selling anything Drag Special es, anything MidUSA, Kuryakyn, Custom Chrome, Rinehart mufflers, he has every make of oil, there’s frames, fenders, front ends, forks,

aluminum It’s Kool To Drink Healthy billet and spoke wheels, RENT A FREEZER FULL OF ICE res, helmets, FOR YOUR WEEKEND PARTY cleaning supplies and hyper chargers. There’s a brand new Midwest 127cuin engine for $5800 (don’t think an 88 is 8900 bucks). Taking one side of the store is his wife (Audrey’s) OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK Mon - Fri 10 to 7 ! Sat - Sun 10 to 5 Art Rocks Gallery & Gi Ware store, where plenty of Harley gi ware, as well as local art, e dye clothing, and co age industry ar cles can be purchased at very reasonable prices. She does picture framing, pulls canvases, draws and paints beau ful abstracts, gers, and wolves. There’s country candles, ar sts jewelry, Simcoe blown glasses, as well as plenty of other ar sts works changing in and out all the me – it’s a place to come back to, to see
what’s new. One really never knows how many people are going to turn up for a grand opening. The Selkirk Lions (Anne, Ron, Norm, Mario, Joanne, and Dan) put on a good spread of burgers and dogs, selling well, next to the store. Brian Powel, of Dunnville’s Vic Powel and Sons Welding, put the long green 70’s chopper up on their crane, suspended 60 feet in the air. The grass was mowed, stuff was painted lime green, picnic tables were put on the grass, porta-po y put in place, and Missy, of “Sweet Cheeks” brought a 3 foot by 2 foot by 3 inch thick delicious cake that was gone by the end of the day, along with the 5 gallons of Tim Horton’s coffee. Early in the morning, Cri er le Newmarket in a rain he described as “pissing down”, arriving just shy of lunch me. Overhead, the clouds were so and well separated across a brilliant blue sky and bright sunshine with about 80 degrees temperature – a really nice day in Selkirk. Mandy, Theresa (Mike’s wife), Jen (Mike’s daughter), & Sue were s e l l i n g jewelry out front of Audrey ’s side of the store – pre y much selling it all by the end of the day at 50% off. So there we have it! Choppers Custom Works in Selkirk is now up, and running, so when you’re riding through town, do stop in between the hours 9-6pm Monday to Friday, 9 - 4pm Saturday, and if you’re stuck a er hours, give him a call at the emergency number 905776-1111 Jonathan M u s s o n . THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 13
Cruising With Critter My God! This is July issue! UnFknblvable! Time goes by so quickly and there always seems like there is more to accomplish than I have me to accomplish it all! I’m s ll struggling to get a handle on things and become a business dude instead of the flakey guy who just travels around having a good me and it can be quite an adventure at mes, but I’ve got my buddy Al working with me here as Managing editor and he helps keep me sane, does a great job on graphics and it allows me to s ll get out to cover events instead of being trapped behind a desk even though I s ll seem to spend a lot of me in here. I’m con nuing to get great feedback from many of you as to the changes that we have made and we con nue to try and improve things and give coverage to all areas of the Province and I’m trying to get out and about and range further afield than I have in the past but there are just so many hours in a day. There is also a lot of stuff that I now have to deal with that I’ve never had to deal with before and occasionally one of the things I should have spo ed as part of my new du es will sneak by and bite me in the ass and by the me I’ve no ced it, it is too late to do anything else but admit a mistake, curse myself out for being a fucking doofus and just deal with it the best I can and vow to never let it happen again. Please be pa ent the fates haven’t finished fucking with me yet. I’ve heard that me and experience will help and I’m ge ng there! I have always done my best to be respec"ul to all who deserve respect and for years have walked a fine line and managed to stay on good terms with most Clubs and groups. I have never wri en anything derogatory about any Club
and have always strived to support all Clubs and strived to promote some unity among the different Clubs. The Unity Ride that the OCC is making a reality was an idea that I proposed to the OCC some years ago and it has long been my dream and nobody is happier to see it become a reality than me! I was involved in its ini al stages, but it couldn’t happen with just me or a few, as it takes the resolve and commitment by all to make it happen. All clubs joined in unity with one resolve! To survive and to counter some of the bullshit and fear mongering that has constantly been perpetuated by the Police and the Mainstream Media and crammed down the general public’s throat for years! I wanted badly to be a larger part of it, par cipate in it, nurture it and make it grow into a monster event but unfortunately my du es with The Mag have placed large demands on that limited commodity known as me and I’ve had to step back from some things and the OCC was one of the things and I’ve never got to par cipate in the one thing that I really wanted to see happen. Maybe someday! I’m s ll interested in the OCC and support them personally and with the Mag but for the me being, that is the extent of my involvement. I long for the day that a pack all wearing their respec ve patches can ride together in a seemingly endless procession down a highway to whatever des na on they chose and just go there indifferent of the patch they wear! Club poli cs are le# behind and true brotherhood is what emerges like a phoenix and we will all be stronger for it! Clubs and other organiza ons are unfortunately subject to internal poli cs, conflicts and agendas of some that run counter to the visions of others and can prove detrimental and can cause turmoil, upheaval and changes. It is unfortunate but that is the nature of the beast. I have witnessed firsthand, divisions in many clubs and witnessed long- me members choosing to go a different direc on than what they had originally set for one reason or another and that can and has resulted in disbanding, patching over to other clubs or star ng new clubs. These changes are quite o#en conten ous, bi er and can spawn hard feelings that can last a long me as brothers move off in other direc ons. I reserve the right to agree or disagree with those decisions but will keep my thoughts to myself and always respect the individual’s right to make their decisions and live with it once it is made. I have made my posi on absolutely clear to all par es concerned. I will respect the right of an individual or group of individuals to make those hard decisions and will not interfere or try to influence those decisions. Once made, those decisions do not cause me to treat either party or par es any differently because that is not the way I work! If I respected you before (Unless you’ve turned rat or child molester or other such venomous piece of shit,) you will have the same respect from me as you’ve always had and I will greet you and treat you as I always have, regardwww.rnrcustomcycle.com less of who else may witness it. I do not Major & Minor Repairs, Rebuilds & Scheduled Service ask for consent or approval from anyComplete Machine Shop Service, Frame Up Build to Order one and I will be true to who or what Harley Davidson Trained P.H.D. Cruising With Critter different fac ons. Those who were my Brothers and Sisters before your decisions were made, I s ll consider being Brothers and Sisters despite of what you choose or choose not to wear on your back. As I said, it can be a thin line but I think I’m up to the task. That being said and now being in a posi on to state such things I will not knowingly, allow The Rider’s Mag to be used as a vehicle or a pla!orm to slam or insult a Club or its members for whatever reason or to launch a personal a"ack. I try to allow our writers freedom of expression but expect them to stay within the bounds. We do seem to share the same viewpoints at most mes, but not always and I would like to make it clear that the opinions of one do not necessarily reflect those of all. It has however become clear to me that I must be a li"le more diligent and vigilant in my role as editor and pay closer a"en on and will do so. So apart from the Gremlins that s ll get their grubby li"le paws into things and screw with me things are moving along. I would have liked to have go"en to The Highway of Heroes Ride and thought I’d had it covered but I guess I fucked up again! No disrespect and you all know we support the troops as we put that on every Magazine we publish and every ar cle of support clothing that I produce. I had business that took me in another direc on and couldn’t make it and those that I mistakenly thought would cover it, couldn’t get there either, so I offer my apologies to all! I’ve been spending a bit of me lately out in the Hamilton/Niagara/Brant/ Norfolk Regions. It is an area that I trucked through lots in my forty some odd year career with Canada Cartage but never got to spend any real me there.
I always got confused at that side of the lake because North and South there wasn’t the North and South that I knew and all the one way streets just fucked with me! JR had me cover a couple of events over this way over the years and they were mostly poker runs where I just followed the leader and never really got a handle on where I was at

Cruising With Critter any given moment un l a familiar landmark came into view and then it was gone and I again thought WTFAIN (Where The Fuck Am I Now?). Hey I drove a tractor trailer and we weren’t allowed to even look at some of the roads we travel on our bikes! I took a ride out to Suck Bang Blow another great bar of which (Other than seeing their ad in The Mag and hearing about them.) I was totally unfamiliar (Although the name was intriguing!) with and today I was heading there to help the Black Hawks MC celebrate their 75th Anniversary. I had go"en ed up in the office for longer than expected doing the shit that that now re red guy, JR used to do before he dumped it all on me and now he’s out running around in his boat playing at being a sailor with his kids (The Heathens) instead of a being a biker (He blew the motor in his boat which according to some reliable sources was way undersized anyhow.) and I was running really late. Not surprisingly, I got lost for a while (That fucking North/South thing again!) and a$er an unplanned scenic tour of some of the back-roads, back streets, back allies, side streets, ditches, trenches of this fantas c City and more than a li"le cursing and swearing I found my way to the bar where I was greeted by comments like; “Hey we’re almost ready to pack up!” “You missed the huge amount of bikes that just le$!” and other such stuff. Then it was “Hey we’re glad you could make it.” I found my way to the bar and the answer to my ques on “Do you have 50?” was met with that same dumbfounded

look that I’ve seen so many mes that is usually followed with a “What’s that? Or Do they s ll make that shit?” isn’t the same dumbfounded look in this part of the World but this me it was a stern look from an extremely pre"y bartenders face and followed by “Hey what kind of a Biker Bar do you think this is? Of course we have fucking 50!” I could have kissed her but she produced the 50 and my lips were busy elsewhere, extrac ng the nectar of the God’s from that cold brown bo"le! There were s ll a goodly number of members, supporters and well-wishers s ll hanging around as they had yet to do the door prizes. Our man Rose was out earlier with The Niagara Hogs and he is wri ng an ar cle so I won’t steal his thunder but had to men on that I do s ll get out there (Late perhaps but late is be"er than not showing up at all! I do show up!) and I love doing it. I got to see the awesome display of pictures and memorabilia that showed the history of this club back 75 years. This Club has history for sure and has seen some good
Cruising With Critter mes, some bad mes and plenty of changes. There have been a number of other clubs spawned from the roots of this club and the original s ll stands proud of its heritage and the lineage that follows it through the years to come. I was treated to The DT Cruiser Helmet some great hospitality by Mouse, Reb, Woggy and the rest and met some awesome people like Flip and Leanne, a very nice couple The DT Crusier Helmet Is One Of The World’s who came up from Smallest & Lightest D.O.T Approved 3/4 Shell Texas to honour this truly amazing Club who have withstood the tests of Helmets Ever Made!! me which may have eroded them somewhat, changed With Four Different Shell Sizes them somewhat and effected them somewhat but you You are Sure To Get That Proportionate Fit!! have to stand up for what you believe in and what and who you are and they s ll stand proud and are s ll The Black Hawks MC. Congratula ons! May you survive another 75 or longer except I might not make it to that celebra on! surrecXi e I swung out to beau ful downtown Selkirk for the R Grand opening of Choppers Custom Works. They recently started adver sing with us and seemed like such great people that I really wanted to check them out despite the fact that we have our man Jonathan right there in town and he was going to be there as well. I just wanted to go and being that I’m the boss here now and Facebook/ResurrecXionCycles didn’t have to ask permission I went. I had planned to ride out but it was pissing down rain in Newmarket when it was me to go, so being prac cal and found some other errands that could be done on the way always looking to mul -task, I checked my “to do” list and there or on the way back that required more cargo capac-

This was an event alright! A community event at that, as the place was packed. The Selkirk Lions Club had their barbecues going full lt and was doing a great job of feeding the crowd who came out to celebrate with Tom, Audrey and company. I made my way inside the nice bright, very busy Showroom and waited un l Tom and Audrey were free and seized the brief window of opportunity to introduce myself. “Jonathan was just here.” They informed me. “He took all kinds of pictures and said he had to leave for a while.” I told them that I just wanted to get out and meet them and to see the shop so I would have a personal connec on rather than just voices on the phone or words on a computer screen from the many e mails that have passed between us. I had been hoping to touch base with Jonathan and hung around a while, ge ng some pictures, yakking with some of the a endees and even grabbed one of the delicious hamburgers that the Lion’s Club were cooking before deciding it was me to go. I said my goodbyes and headed off apparently just missing Jonathan again by mere seconds, who as promised, did come back.

Cruising With Critter day. The Demo Rides got rained out once again but the weather cleared up so they could do the Ride Night at least. So I hung around to take in a part of it. Lisa and the crew do a fantas c job of their Ride Nights but the weather hasn’t been kind or conducive to doing many events lately and this is the first one this year that hasn’t had rain so it was a welcome change and they were going to get it in before Mother Nature would again show her nasty side. I’ve never been out here before for one of
throughout the en re region that just scream “This is Motorcycle Country!” and they wind through some pre y fantas c and picturesque countryside. But then you arrive at the Lore o Inn where the ravishing Brenda and Stephanie (I have a hard me deciding which is pret er and don’t really care because they are both fantas c! I thought they were sisters!) and their crew host a great Bike Night every Thursday and offer some great specials
for riders, on some equally great food. They have a great pa o with tunes playing, plenty of parking and a great atmosphere! To top it off for me they also serve 50! How great is that? What more could you want or need? Great food, great looking ladies to serve it to you on a great pa o with great tunes playing and a great ride coming and going, it has it all. Ride on out and check it out any me. Friday nights they have live bands and have been booking some pre y incredible acts like Wide Mouth Mason and many other top notch acts. This is a li le Gem of a place that will win a place in your heart and become a great des na on. Your Cri er Crew Discount Cards are accepted for a 10% discount any me. Tell them Cri er sent you! I also rode out to Clare’s the other day to check out the Demo Rides and then take in the Bike Night that they do every Thurs-
their events and when I got a chance to talk at length to Lisa about these events learned a lot. She has been running these Bike Nights for quite some me, about 13 years in fact, as they started at Arizona’s Bar and as things changed (Bars closing and the like) she just change the loca on but it is for all intents and purposes the same Bike Night. Clare’s H-D is solidly behind it and it shows. It is a classy event. They have a different host Club each week and they get to choose the Charity that the proceeds go to. This week it was The Chrome Divas who had the barbecue stoked and were turning out some fantas c burgers and hotdogs and the Charity that would Continued Page 27

Durham Ride for Dad – June 2013 Well the weather forecasters were not pain ng a pre y picture in the days leading up to this day, and I awoke to grey clouds and drizzle so I readied myself for a damp ride. This was reminiscent of last year’s event but it didn’t stop me then and it wasn’t going to stop me now. I feel that if you are going to let a li le bad weather dictate where and when you go somewhere you are never going to go anywhere and you are going to miss out on a lot of great stuff so I choose to mostly ignore it. I loaded up my camera and other gear that I would need for the day and since the drizzle had stopped, for the me being at least, I le my raingear rolled up in the side bag, mounted up and headed east towards Port Perry under dark, threatening skies. It was a cool (Bordering on cold) and the drizzle started again just outside of Newmarket but I kept on and it let up quickly and the rest of the ride was dry and I made decent me and rolled into the Community Centre which as last year would be the start and finish point for the ride, a li le before 8:00 AM. There were already many bikes lining up and the place was a hive of ac vity with riders milling around under the watchful eyes of The 1st Cav members who were looking a er the ride by serving as blockers and just keeping things organized and booths and displays being set up in prepara on for what would be
a very busy day. I grabbed my camera and wandered around ge ng some shots and just shoo ng the shit with other early arrivals. There are many who travel around the Province and even the Country making it their personal goal to a end as many of the various Ride for Dad events as they can. One gentleman I spoke to had been on the ride out Kitchener way the previous week. I roamed around checking out the many booths with souvenirs and other items being offered and managed to pick up a couple of things. I tracked down Charles and others in charge of this ride to let them know I was here and I also ran into Lou Devuono, who was serving as emcee for this year’s event and had a chance to talk to him a while before things got too busy for both of us. It was explained to me that this would be basically the same route as we took last year which was fine with me as they had chosen a good route that had a nice mix of different types of roads with some nice twis ng sec ons included, all meandering through the magnificent, picturesque, countryside, with well-spaced stops where there were comfort sta ons and cards could be drawn by par cipants in the quest for that winning poker hand. This ride isn’t really about winning a prize it is about raising awareness of Prostate Cancer and to stress the need for PSA

Durham Ride for Dad – June 2013 tests and regular rectal examina ons and everyone here understood that but winning is s ll great. The place was now filling up rapidly. The registra on booths were swamped as more riders appeared at an ever increasing rate. I ran into many familiar faces in one of my many tours around the property. Some I’d known for years, some from last year’s ride and some I just met but I had no shortage of company. I was surprised to see my pal Dusty out along with several other old friends like Jim, Lynda and Ray out to support the event as they keep a pre y busy schedule but I was pleased that they had added this run to their Ride Calendar. Another trip to the parking lot confirmed my suspicions. There were a lot of motorcycles out there! All different makes, models and styles but there were lots of them and many riders were busy affixing “Ride for Dad” flags to them in prepara on for the ride. We gathered back inside for the official start of the day’s events. There were some speakers and representa ves from some of the many Sponsors such as Telus who related stories to support this cause and campaign and to explain what part they were playing in the grand scheme of things. Other speakers that ranged from Doctors and some of the par cipants who have and are being treated or those who had it and had beaten it, stressed the importance of the test and stated empha cally that early detec on is the key to defense and the defeat of this disease. There was also an excellent memorial ceremony to mark the anniversary of D Day with an honour guard trooping in the colours in a show of respect and thanks to those who served in that
Great Campaign that allows us the freedom and privileges that we enjoy today. Let us not forget. The skies s ll threatened and there was the occasional light drizzle but everyone saddled up and prepared to leave on what was to be a fantas c ride. I posi oned Petoonia across the road from the driveway where I had a good vantage point to get pictures of the riders as they le" en mass, having learned a thing or two from my extensive Roving Reporter training (OK from last year at this same event, when I had le" Petoonia back in the parking lot and had to rush (OK. I hobbled and limped.) back to get her and then had to scramble to catch up to the pack.) and taking into account my now even more gimpy right knee had her close at hand and running and a"er the last bike had departed I was mounted and moving in seconds. I learn eventually! The Durham Police were out in force to block intersec ons and enabled the procession to get out of town without incident and with as li le inconvenience and disrup on to other traffic and pedestrians as possible. There was much fanfare as we moved through the Streets as people waved their support from the roadside and horns from other traffic sounded their encouragement and approval. As I said earlier the stops were set up only as places to collect cards and were equipped

Durham Ride for Dad – June 2013 whimsical and weird stuff that adorns my office and had I been staying to the end would have competed in the bidding, but I s ll had other ma ers that required my a en on that day so a er a bit more visi ng and get ng more pictures I said my goodbyes and headed off to a end to the many other du es I have inherited from JR since his re rement. In the end, other than the odd light sprinkling of rain at the start of the day, and the weather was only a factor in that it was probably a deciding element for those less commi ed to riding or less comfortable in riding in condi ons that are less than ideal and who listen to and take to heart the less than favourable weather forecasts and when they looked out their windows that morning and saw the grey clouds instead of blue skies and sunshine pulled the covers over their heads and went back to sleep. To those people I say; It was your loss as you lost out on a nice ride with some really great people for a very worthy cause but the ul mately Ride loses as they need the support. I hope we can lure you out next year and show you that a bit of less than perfect weather can’t spoil a ride and that everyday riding is a good day for a ride. To the 156 registered riders who came out and garnered $25,000.00 in pledges and showed your support for this Great Event and Great cause I thank you and commend you all for your commitment dedica on and support! The top pledge tle for this event goes to Karen Bynde as she raised $3677.50. Congratula ons and thanks! I was going to try and men on all the sponsors for this event but they are just too numerous but you will find them on the Ride for Dad website but thanks to all for your support. with porta-po"es and not intended to be real rest stops as the emphasis was on the Ride and the event por on would be back at the Community Centre so things went along as planned and moved along quite well. I just hooked up with different groups of riders as the ride progressed and for the last couple of legs wound up joining with the lovely Judith and a couple of her fellow Red Knights who have made this event part of their very full ride calendar for the past while. This wasn’t en rely unplanned on my part, as Judith also rides one of the amazing trike conversions done by JD Cycle that I am interested in building on which to deliver the Mags eventually and I really wanted to see how it handled. I’m s ll impressed and even more anxious to get going on my project. We ended up being among the first back at the Community Centre and earned a spot at the front of the line for the Barbecues for a great burger and got to get a good look at the many fantas c items up for the Chinese auc on. There was also a fantas c wood carving done by my old friend Ed from Art by Bare. He does a different carving each year which he donates to the Ride and this years was en tled “Road Rash” and would have looked great in my collec on of

They also have a different band playing each week and we were treated this week to a great duo “Sco y and Dave” who performed a wide variety of tunes and kept the crowds entertained. There are door prizes and lots of great regulars to talk to which makes for a good relaxing me and it is easy to see why it draws large crowds usually around 200 or more. They also do a Show and Shine each week and judging from the bikes I saw there, compe on is quite s ff. I managed to spend some me with John Clare who is always a treat to talk to and he was asking about JR and had some things to say about our re red guy’s choice of boat. The boat, oddly enough, was the topic of discussion I had with JR a day or so previous that involved blown motors and other such good stuff as he has not been able to get that boat out of his garage for a whole lot of years due to working on the Mag and having no me, and according to John; it should have remained there. My opinion be er a biker than a sailor. Aaaaarg Matey! This months feature guy is Mr T. he is well known in the Guelph area and is o en seen with his Lady Constance and of course, his mother, at almost every bike show that goes on each year, he is prac cally a fixture and this is where i first met him many years ago. When we put the call out for sportsters many years ago he did put his bike on the feature list and he called it Cinderella because it was so pre y, it was a totally loaded sportster with custom airbrush paint and every piece of chrome that you could think of. Mr T. was seriously injured while on the job as a millwright and did not recognize the severity of his injuries un l about 10 years later. A er a number of surgeries related to the injury he was pensioned off on a disability. Sadly during this me his wife passed away from an illness and he blew off a lot of frustra on riding his bike and customizing it. As me went by he got together with his current gal Constance who was a high school crush who had go en married raised a family then divorced. She started to get involved with his life, they would go to events together and ride and they decided that if they were going to ride together that he should get a bigger bike. He put Cinderella up for sale and with the help of

his local mechanic started to search for a big twin touring style bike. It was at exactly this me that i rang him up to schedule his shoot for the Sportster and it was then that he told me that he had sold the bike to a gal that he called the crazy bitch and that he thought that she would be an ideal candidate for our lady feature sec on, to date i have not heard from this lady but of course there’s s ll me for her to get onto the list and get the shoot done. Comically on his last ride a er selling Cinderella he was stopped in traffic behind a tractor

trailer who decided he needed to back up a li le bit to turn and as the truck reversed and with nowhere to go he jumped off the bike to avoid what he surely thought would be ge!ng crushed between the trailer ahead of him and the car behind him. As it turned out the damage was minor and involved just the front fender and some paint work, he says the new buyer got a new mural on the fender to replace the skull that was formerly there and says it looked a lot like her when it was finished. The accident involved the local cops, and fire department, provincial cops and an ambulance and an ambulance chasing reporter from the local newspaper looking for a body or at least blood to photograph. Another biker passing by had stopped as a witness and photographed the scene with his cell phone camera, Mr. T. took him for a beer to show his apprecia on in the somewhat trying incident and when they hit a deck at a pub on the water the other riders gloves blew off the table and the deck and he says that they had to hike all the way around the place to retrieve the riders gloves but at least they didn’t land in the water. He picked up his Street Glide in Windsor from a guy who had picked it up down south, when they went to see it, it wouldn’t run so he got a significant deal on the bike, about 30% off the asking price and he did have his local mechanic with him as well. Although the bike did not have all the promised upgrades the fix to make it run was minor and he also had a reverse gear added to the bike as his leg has reached the point where he finds it difficult to move the bike
backwards. An expensive op on to be sure but well worth it and when he backed the bike out of his garage with the reverse gear it was impressive as i had never seen one before. When they took the bike for its first trip ever they were heading off to the annual Harleys by the Beach all Harley drag races on father’s day and a er spending the night at a motel in the area the bike would not start the next morning, a er summoning their mechanic to retrieve the bike he found that it was a minor wiring problem with the igni on and upon repair he says that “Brutus” has never given him a problem since and they have travelled several mes to Manitoulin Island as well as par cipa ng in a number of local poker runs and Memorial rides. On their first trip to Manitoulin when they hit the ferry Mr. T. asked Constance to get off the bike and head onto the boat as it was his first me riding the bike up the ramp and onto the boat, needless to say she was not impressed as the ramp was perforated to allow water drainage and she explained that it was more than just a li le difficult to walk up the ramp with her Harley boots on with spike heels and she prac cally
had to p toe to avoid ge!ng her heels stuck in the holes. The upside was she was first at the bar for a drink on the two hour crossing to the island. Mr. T. says that with his lady soon to re re that they have ambi ons to travel to some of the larger biker events saying he has always wanted to ride to Sturgis, he has been to Daytona by car and he has also been to Myrtle Beach by car but never made it to the grand daddy of them all in Sturgis. He surprised me a li le saying that plans were on the table to convert Brutus over to a trike as his leg was deteriora ng more quickly that he had expected and he said that he had been researching the conversion kits saying most of those that were of interest to him were in the $8000 - $10,000 range and that his bike could appear as early as this summer as a trike. Of course it also depended on his cash flow but more on his leg but he was pre y definite that he wasn’t going to make the trek to Sturgis un l the bike was converted over to a trike. Mr. T. was pa ent and waited a long me to get his bike in the mag as a er wai ng a number of years for the Sportster list to clear he moved over to the Evo Twin Cam list which gave him another year or two. Despite some scheduling issues ge!ng up to get his bike done and with his lady booking a day off work we made a special trip to get this one done, thanks for being pa ent.

Blessings Everyday God intended that we should walk in blessings every day. How do I Know this. If we look in the first two chapters of our Life Manual – God created MAN in His own image; in the image of God He created man, male and female He created them. Then God blessed them and God said to them, “Be frui ul and mul ply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea; over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves on the earth Genesis 1: 27-28 Did you get what I just said – He makes that a pre y simple image He wanted them to live a blessed life each and every day, enjoy the things he so richly blessed them with. The curse, sickness and bad health were not part of that. Poverty, lack, and want did not exist. Neither did oppression, bondage or suffering. God created something new each day. The man planned every day to be a blessing day. He saw it was good. Everything God created was good. Like wise everything He created He wanted for Adam & Eve. He wanted them to be frui ul and blessed every day .So if He wanted them blessed, He intends for us to be blessed as well. So hows God going to bless us; I believe the moment we confess our life over to him I believe blessings are upon us. Psalm 3:8 tells us the blessings are upon us, that means, the blessing is upon you and me. You’re going to wake up in the morning with it and you are going to have it the rest of your life. When you receive the revela on that God wants to load up your life on a daily basis, you establish this truth as your mindset, then your life will never be the same. So why did I live all these years in defeat when we should be abounding in the blessing we seem to struggle with so. Where did the curse come from? I believe we all know that story how Eve ate the apple at the direc on of Satan and then Eve told Adam this banned fruit is not so bad. Sin can be enjoyable and taste pre y good at mes but their always to be the end when things go sour; and sour they became. God did not bring the curse onto the earth but Adam and Eve did through their disobedience. God’s original inten on for mankind to experience the goodness but Adam & Eve brought the curse down into the world through disobedience. That is not the end of the story. When Christ went to the cross, he redeemed us from that self defea ng cursed life by absorbing it completely into himself. The purpose of the cross was to redeem or restore to mankind that was lost in the garden. From then on, everyday was to be a blessed day. Jesus came so we can have a be er life than we ever dreamed of. Can you honestly describe as being redeemed, open for a new Blessing every day. Pastor Dave Neals Kawartha@bikerschurch.com

Hi Rick . I just got off the phone with 407 etr . She stated that motorcycles are not to be charged $ 3.80 for not having a transponder and yet my seldom used account was overcharged $ 25 since just last August for such . She claims she can’t go back further but is looking into refunding me even more. Maybe the mag should print an advisory to have riders check for overpayments . bfn

The Red Devils Show and Shine – 2013 This is a new event for me as JR always hogged it for himself as it was always one of his favourites and I thought for sure he would for-go his re red guy’s status for this one and make an appearance but I knew I would be there regardless. It was an absolutely gorgeous day for just about picture perfect for any outdoor ac vity, but for a Motorcycle event, it just doesn’t get any be er than this and I knew it would be huge as this event is always well a ended. I was in town early as I had some other business to a end to before heading over to Ar-
den Ave. to the Red Devil’s awesome Clubhouse. I was early, as I said when I rode down that great li le street lined on both sides with nice well-kept homes where the Red Devils well maintained and a rac ve property does not look out of place but blends quite well as it should as it’s been there for decades. The place was already abuzz with ac vity as things got set up for what would be a very busy day.

One thing that was strangely conspicuous by their absence was the usual over the top police presence who are usually there and set up for the day long before this in large numbers well-armed and with lots of camera’s and roadside checks and all the other fun stuff that keeps them amused and feeling useful at this event were not there. It was a refreshing change and the subject of many conversa ons throughout the day.
The Red Devils Show and Shine – 2013 The street was soon filled to overflowing and it was soon evident that they would be se#ng new a endance records with this one as they had bikes parked out on Beech Blvd. and down other side streets as well. I made my way up and down the street so many $mes and it was an ever-changing sea of motorcycles and a great display of paint chrome and cra%smanship not only in the area set aside for entrants in the Show and Shine but everywhere and there were lots of familiar faces there as well. The neighbours with whom the club maintains an excellent rela$onship also come out to observe and take part in the fes$vi$es. The smoke rising from the barbecues that were stoked up and working full $lt wa%ed down the street carrying that great aroma of the mountains of burgers and hotdogs they were cooking lent a great almost carnival quality or atmosphere to this great event. I have absolutely no idea how many people wandered through that street that day but there were lots and there were a lot of different Clubs represented here throughout the day as well as this Club is well respected by all and they deserve it. The $me just flew by and soon Ray without benefit of a loudspeaker (which he doesn’t need) announced the winners of the Show and Shine. Black Hawks’ 75th Anniversary On Sunday May 26, a number of riders rode out to S.B.B in Stoney Creek to the Black Hawks Motorcycle Club 75th Anniversary Reunion and Open House. It was sunny and s ll cool, but the recep on by the Black Hawks was warm and invi ng. When we arrived, about 30 people were si!ng on the pa o enjoying the sounds of bikes rolling in. pa o. But the most impressive thing I no ced was that some of the members were wearing the classic black motorcycle shirt and white e… ..a very formal uniform that was typical back in the day. The Black Hawks MC was established in 1938 and they had a number of items from that era on display. Inside the pub, a couple of tables were set up to display the club’s memorabilia. It was very interes ng to see all the old kidney belts that were personalised, original Black Hawks’ patches, crests, hats and old leather coats. A display board was set up with old membership cards and old pictures of the club. One item that caught my eye was a club picture from around the 40s or early 50s of men and women wearing their signature blackshirt and white e. A young lady by the name of Terry was wearing a white e and wanted to show me the e clip. She was proud to show me her father’s BH e clip. Very impressive piece with the tradi onal bird of prey on it. Terry told me her dad and 3 uncles were members of the club and that she was the newest member now. I sat at a table with a few members and they were happy to share some stories about the club. One member, John, has been a member for 54 years. The club went through some changes and became inac ve for a number of years but a small group kept in touch and never forgot their roots. They reformed in ’03 and have been

SHENANIGANS with Sherri O’Irish LET’S PLAY FOLLOW THE LEADER While walking through the Toronto Motorcycle and Ta oo show this spring, I happened across Cri er and the Crew, cheerfully handing out the Mag, and spreadin the good word, in a prime loca on, next to the Hooters booth, go figure! Once past the gauntlet, my friends and I took in the rest of the vendors, ar sts, bikes, event promoters, and cha ed with some old acquaintances. This of course, made me curse the frigid temperatures outside, and long for sunny warm weather, and the many rides, runs, and tours, to be taken with friends. I also remembered how excited I was, to go on one of my first large group rides, for charity. The thought of being a part of more than a thousand bikes, riding in close quarters, all while trying to keep the rubber side down, was also u erly terrifying. Thankfully the ride was well organized, fun, and fear aside, it was a great experience as well as a learning opportunity, that I applied to my everyday riding. I do admit, that there are mes that I prefer to ride alone, but whether I’m riding with 2 or 200, my main focus is safety. When riding in a group, you have to realize, that not everyone may be as experienced as others, so by knowing some of the following group riding ps and informa on, and with a li le “group effort”, we can all enjoy the ride, and maybe a “group hug” at the end. Lack of communica on can create huge problems when riding. An intercom system is an ideal solu on, or there are a series of about 16 basic standard hand signals, that every riders should know, to convey various instruc ons, warnings, and direc ons. Each rider in succession, is to repeat the hand signal for the benefit of the riders behind them. As well, make sure that your rear signal lights and brake lights are large enough for others to see and use, as advanced warnings. Another problem is keeping the group together, especially when there are so many factors that tend to create and add to these group separa on problems. Being the “minority group” on the road, the more riders in your group, the louder, and larger an object you appear to be to other vehicles, which should put to rest the old stand-by excuse that “I didn’t see them!”. One of the worst culprits is intersec ons, lighted or signed. In these cases, the decision has to be made on whether there is enough space and me for the group to proceed together, or stop and wait for the riders to gather up. If only a por on of the group makes it through, the riders will usually pull over a er going through the intersec on at a safe area, or slow down, so that the rest of the group can rejoin. STAGGERED FORMATION provides safety for a group, in that every rider in the group has a safety cushion around him/ her, in the re track they chose, within the lane the group is riding in, and permits maximum visibility for each rider
ahead and behind. The simplified version of the 2 SECOND RULE is this, 2 seconds apart, is approx. 14-16 . from the rear re of the rider DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF YOU, to your front re. This is so that in an emergency, the rider in the opposite re track, could slide in between you and the rider in front of you, with a 4 . cushion, in front and behind them. O en riders follow too close to each other in a group, which decreases your stopping distance, visibility, and is very dangerous! NEVER operate directly alongside another motorcycle; this leaves no safe defensive maneuver area, possibly causing someone to take out another bike with them if an accident occurs. Pull up or talk to another rider side by side, only when stopping, then resume the staggered forma on when the group proceeds. CORNERS, CURVES AND ON/OFF RAMPS, may be taken in single file momentarily, dependent on the arc or angle. Bikes on average range from 6-8 . long, longer bikes need a wider

turning radius, and require more use of the lane, so riders must learn to judge how a curve may be taken safely. When turning, use the following steps for be er control:*SLOW DOWN, *LOOK AROUND, then THROUGH the turn, not at the road in front of your re, and *LEAN the bike, by pushing down on the handgrip in the direc on of the turn. Maintain steady speed or accelerate gradually through the turn, while avoiding decelera on. PASSING is to be done in single file from the le blocking posi on only. Regardless of what the riders in the group are doing, each rider must personally check to see that the new lane is clear of traffic before entering it. If passing is not possible, stay aware of any signals that the front group may be using or changing, and relay them to the rest of the group behind you. SPEED is one of the biggest problems with riding in a group, it can get out of hand quickly, and be very dangerous. Group riding is not meant to be a race or a compe on. Some
riders may try to set a high speed pace, or may get antsy if the speeds are slower than they normally ride. If you are apprehensive about the speeds being taken by some of the riders around you, change your posi on in the group at the next rest stop, or remove yourself from the group. PROBLEMS and MISHAPS can happen at any me. Never leave a rider behind! It is best to buddy up with someone, so that at least one other person knows the situa on. Always carry “IN CASE OF EMERGENCY” numbers with your license and or ownership, so that loved ones can be called if an accident occurs, locked or broken cell phones do not help. PRE-TRIP MEETINGS should be done well ahead of ride me, to prepare the riders, and answer any ques ons that may come up. Circulate maps or have a “group discussion” about the route and designated rest/fuel stops to your des na on, before the ride starts, so that in the event that riders get lost or separated, they can s ll arrive at their own pace. ROAD CAPTAINS and LEAD RIDERS are usually chosen because they are the rider with the most experience, confidence, and trusted judgment. Their responsibility is to ride in the front blocking posi on, communicate to, and lead the group of riders, at a pace that everyone in the group can follow, to and from their des na on safely. BLOCKERS, are used to prevent group separa on for excessively large groups, where municipali es and police services, do not support the use of barricades and officers to halt oncoming traffic, for a con nuous flow of bikes. From the front of the group, they will break away, to one or both sides, stop, and secure intersec ons with their bikes, to courtesy traffic into wai ng for the group, to pass the intersec on safely and together. A er the chase bikes make it through safely, these blockers then fall back into the group, as chasers.

SHENANIGANS with Sherri O’Irish CORE GROUP RIDERS, in many cases, pose the greatest dangers! Stay alert and aware; always try to look a few bikes ahead instead of focusing on the bike in front of you. The primary objec ve of this 2 wheeled “support group”, is to ride in a manner that will not interfere with the safety of others, while keeping yourself safe. Novice group riders should ride in the middle of the pack, so that there are experienced riders in front of them that they can observe, and experienced riders behind them to keep an eye on them, and maybe give them some advice if needed, when they come to a stop. Any ac ons that you take, adversely affect the riders around you, and a chain reac on can occur as a result. Also, try to keep a constant speed when driving along, never accelerate and decelerate back and forth, so that the riders behind you don’t have to keep adjus ng and compensa ng for your ac ons. Motorcycles with sidecars, trikes, and hybrids should ride at the rear, unless they are leading the group, their wider chassis, require a greater cushion of space within the lane, and can block the clear front or rear view of the other riders. CHASE RIDERS and TAIL GUNNERS should also be riders with a fair amount of riding and or mechanical experience, and First Aid training if possible. They may be placed throughout a large group, to assist in spo ng problems such as mechanical and medical issues, so that they can exit and help immediately, but are mainly placed at the back as final riders, concluding the procession. If you leave your place for any reason, and wish to rejoin, re-enter at the back, in front of the Chase Riders. Keep in mind, that each rider has their own style of riding, which is usually an extension of their personality, and some become be er or worse riders when led by example, so surround yourself with others that you are comfortable riding with, be the change you want to see in other riders, and they will follow! The more the merrier! Now who’s up for that “group” hug?!
REMEMBER: “You start the game with a full pot o’ luck and an empty pot o’ experience... The object is to fill the pot o’ experience before you empty the pot o’ luck.”

Ladies and Their Harleys
This month’s feature lady is Kelly, she’s riding this beau ful Heritage so ail that she picked up in the very early spring of 2012 and she’s never stopped loving this bike since the minute she got onto it. Kelly had always wanted to ride but her parents went to great efforts to discourage her from riding saying listen riding is dangerous we will save you the insurance money and kill you ourselves, in a funny way of course. Kelly met her guy Rob a dozen years ago or so and he had always been a crotch rocket riding kind of a guy and over the years he had always wanted to get a Harley for a variety of reasons but found that it was not within his budget. When he got together with Kelly once they had se led in he brought up the idea of ge ng a motorcycle, something that was within their means at the me and of course she had always wanted to ride so this was an exci ng prospect for her. They decided on a Suzuki 800 intruder and rode that bike extensively and took great care of the bike and thoroughly enjoyed their riding together, as employment income improved Rob presented the idea of ge ng a
THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 40
Harley poin ng out that if they traded in the Suzuki it was within their budget to be able to purchase a new Harley Dyna. Kelly was thoroughly red of being on the back of the bike and was itching to ride on her own and agreed that Rob should get his Harley but that since there was li le trade in value on the metric bike and they had cared for it and kept it in top notch condi on that she would like to take over riding the Suzuki. Rob chose a dealer that was close to where he was doing some studying to complete his mobile crane operators license and chose his ride, for a number of years they rode together while paying off the loan on the Harley motorcycle, as they approached the big recession in 2008 she was laid off from her job and his work slowed down but despite the economic woes in the province she says they were able to keep up the payments on the bike. Kelly had aspira ons of ge ng a Harley of her own but she had to put those on hold un l their situa on got a li le clearer and she got back to steady work and had a steady income. She did get called back to

work and says she holds a number of ckets for welding, and has done this most of her life and had se led in back at her former employer as a quality control inspector taking random samples off the line and cu ng them up and inspec ng the welds and material for quality and consistency. The itch to own her own Harley was star ng to return although she says that most dealers that she visited wanted to steer her towards a sportster but she wanted to get right into a big twin so ail and the object of her desire was a so ail model called the blackline. She visited a local dealership on a day they were doing demo rides and signed up to ride the bike she wanted and everything was fine un l a woman from corporate headquarters summarily pulled her off that bike saying that it was too large for her to ride, despite Kelly poin ng out that her feet easily reached the ground, and she was able to reach all the controls the woman was having none of that and switched her over to a dyna which infuriated her as she says there’s one of those in my garage i can ride any me i want. Fortunately for her the dealer saw the incident and put her onto one of their own bikes and sent her out on a subsequent demo ride on a deluxe, she says when she got back from that ride to her disappointment her guy Rob was in the washroom and missed the shit ea ng grin on her face but one of her girlfriends was there to witness the smile, saying you look really happy, Kelly said yeah i found my ride and i love it. Since the loan on the first bike was paid off they visited that same dealership who had rescued her from the corporate witch, when she told the sales guy she wanted a deluxe he told her she wouldn’t like the ride and suggested that she
purchase a sportster, a er a short discussion it became clear to her that they were not willing or able to sell her the motorcycle that she wanted so they walked out the door and visited that same dealership where Rob had purchased his Dyna years before and she says that they couldn’t do enough for her, they were literally falling all over themselves to sell her this beau ful Heritage So ail. Kelly says that the Heritage is so similar to the deluxe the only difference being that the Heritage has so bags which come in handy for hauling stuff around and with the agenda that she has for riding the luggage will definitely be an asset. She picked up the bike in the spring of 2012, the very early spring as it was February and she was able to get out for a few rides as early as march of that year saying that we had some terrific weather then and she was grateful to have made her goal of pu ng 5000 kms on the bike that first year poin ng out that it rained frequently on weekends. She and Rob par cipated in a number of local events including Dragos Memorial ride and says she and most of the other she know love the mag and use it as a guide to choose des na ons when they are going for a ride. To get to her five grand last year she rode as far east as Trenton and up north a number of mes to des na ons including Hockley Valley and Manitoulin Island which she says is an annual des na on for them going on labour day weekend and riding is way more fun that going on four wheels.
Of course they always visit Port Dover on Friday the 13th and have plans to ride out west perhaps as early as this year if they can both coordinate their vaca on weeks, Kelly would like to ride east saying she has been out that way before but that Rob is not so fond of the east and would prefer either west or south. Kelly has added a number of chrome bolt on items to her bike since she first purchased it but she says that before she took delivery of the bike it was lowered front and rear and she had the running boards removed from the front since she says that although she can reach the ground her leg is a li le too short to reach the kickstand around the running board so pegs were right for her on the front. She plans to add some chrome visors to the ligh ng on the bike and says that ge ng a set of pipe onto the bike is a necessity. She says that she never really got the Harley thing wan ng just to get out and ride and she truly enjoyed riding her metric around, but she says now that she’s on her dream bike she truly gets the whole Harley thing but s ll has a li le trouble understanding some of the other things in Harleydom like pants, boots, etc. But too each his own right? Nice ride Kelly

Motorcyco Beau Where the hell does the me go? Here we are and it’s already the middle of the month and I am star ng to wish things would just slow down because it seems like the good mes just fly by. Last month I men oned that we par cipated in a ceremony at O awa’s City Hall where the Mayor officially proclaimed the month of May as Biker Awareness Month. It was a dreary somewhat cloudy day when the event took place but a li le over a 100 area riders were kind enough to crawl out of bed early in the morning and come down in the cool and wet weather to take part in the event. Several area groups set up info tables such as the Na onal Memorial Ride, a couple of H.O.G chapters, O.R.R.A (Ontario Road Riders Assoc) ,and S.O.A.R (Society of O awa Area Riders) the folks who were responsible for the whole project of having the City par cipate in making automobile drivers more aware of people riding motorcycles and perhaps remember to share the road which included municipal buses with large signs with
THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 46
from the Far East.... of Ontario that is! the message on the back. Other things that were included in the campaign were free bumper s ckers and micro-fiber cloths. Now I wasn’t sure if the cloths were for wiping your windshield to watch out for the cagers or for automobile drivers to clean their glasses and stop hi ng motorcyclists, either way the cloths will come in handy in the future. Some of The Cel c Brotherhood were there with a table set up promo ng one of their main causes, TBI awareness Month in Canada. TBI (Trauma c Brain Injury) sadly is a situa on that far too many motorcyclists suffer and have to deal with daily. They handed out free medicalert cards to everyone a ending so that riders could fill out their medical info such as exis ng health condi ons or medica ons they take and along with contact info and then keep the informa on in their wallets just in case. All those who par cipated were then encouraged to a end any of the local cruise nights during the summer that the TCB support and they could pick up a small helmet s cker that can be put at the back of the helmet and should they ever be involved in an accident and are unresponsive...the s cker would alert first-responders to check for the card and perhaps aided with the info be able to start emergency procedures while on route to a hospital. I might add that Denny’s Restaurant (south keys plaza) and The Riders Mag in Eastern Ontario have also par cipated in this pilot project, if you save one riders life then it is all worth the effort and that’s what it is all about. All and all the event was a great success if for no other reason, seeing the City poli cians becoming more aware of their responsibility to help keep riders safe on public streets and we all know that far too many riders are ge ng injured or worse by people in automobiles that are just not paying a en on to the road because they are yakking on their damn cell phones, tex ng or just drinking their coffee while drumming out some damn tune that is playing on their car radio while they are supposed to be sharing the road with motorcycles. Congrats to the City of O awa and their Mayor Jim Watson for ge ng on board this campaign. One last thing that needs to be men oned was the par cipa on by Canadian Tire Corp. A number of corpora ons & businesses were contacted and asked to par cipate in the promo on of the month of May and Biker Awareness campaign and I can’t say I was very impressed by the response but in the world of bikers when something happens it’s big. Canadian Tire Corp was contacted and asked if they might put some comment on the back of their cash receipts or something similar to help get the word out in the local O awa area, well they went far beyond and I would like to give you a small quote from a representa ve from CTC named Robin Gobin, in response to our request ..“Canadian Tire is proud to support this important awareness campaign throughout the month of May – making Ontario roads safer for all motorcyclists. Thanks for bringing this to our a en on. We appreciate the opportunity!” Just so you all know for the whole month of May, CTC rotated the logo on their video screens at the counters in their gas bars. Now this is the way you hope a corporate ci zen would react. I don’t care what kind of gas you normally use, if you are out on your motorcycle during the riding season try and fill up at CTC whenever you can. They won’t know why there is an increase in gas sales....but we will!.. Bikers should always support those who support us!. Nuff Said! In early May we par cipated in one of our favorite Spring

Motorcyco Beau events, the Capital City Bikers Church Swap Meet/Info Day and once again it was a whopping success. The Church puts the whole event on for free to both vendors and the public. This year a endance was es mated to be at somewhere between 2500 to 3000 people and the number of bikes that lined the streets outside was an awesome sight to behold. Hillbilly, the “Lovelyâ€? Nelia and all the great volunteers were once again able to make this swap meet the very best in the O awa area. Two oors of swap and motorcycle related booths ďŹ lled the church and outside in the courtyard was busy all aÂ?ernoon with people enjoying the great weather and lining up to stu their faces with burgers & fries. We took some  me o from the Mag booth to wander around and take pictures and bumped into such people as “Brotherâ€? Doug Taylor & his son, James who always have great deals on bike parts leÂ? over from some of their builds. James couldn’t wait to drag me outside to have a look at his new seat he made for his Sporty, the XL Valdez...James had ta ooed on pieces of pigskin and then s tched them onto
his seat. Aside from gradua ng from culinary school, which I might add James always donates his skills to various bike events throughout the summer, he is also just like his Dad in thinking outside the box when building whatever bike they are working on. We also spent  me over at the Motor Maids booth where the “Loveliesâ€? Nancy Maloney & Jennifer Marsh were kind enough to give us our â€œďŹ xâ€? of home-made cookies & rice krispie squares. The ladies of the Motor Maids are a prime example of women who can hold their own on the roads and Nancy, who is also wife to “Brother’ Grinder Maloney, rides all over Canada in the summer & the U.S. all winter and I am pre y sure she has logged more miles than many male riders I have met. Other notables at the show were Greg & Susie Kinghorn, who host the popular and growing Big Daddy’s Cowpaddy event, which I covered last year and had a phenomenal  me and both Greg & Susie were very prominent in the Old Bastards Mc. Downstairs I found the ORRA/SOAR booth staed by the “Da Bozâ€? and the “lovelyâ€? Dora Di, Sinister

Motorcyco Beau Choppers display on the stage, other notables like Billy White, Kenny Froats and roomful of swap. I had the opportunity to meet up with good friend ‘Squid’ from the Falcons Mc, a group whose membership is largely made up of both ex and ac ve military personnel and Squid introduced me to the newest president of the O awa chapter of the Falcons, Ca ish and spoke for a while with Merlin, who was situated across from us busily selling off all kinds of bike parts le over from his different builds and who like us, almost never travels anywhere without being accompanied by his dog. I guess that having your dog travel with you is just something that comes with age. Garth our ‘Irish” Doberman comes with us to nearly every event that we a end and we are now working out some sort of arrangement so that he can accompany us when the new trike is finally completed. Towards the end of the a ernoon every one took a couple of minutes to pay tribute to the memory of M&M aka Mike Jefferies, who tragically was killed while riding his bike a er last year’s show. Mike was a long me member of the Bikers Church and an even longer me prankster who was a truly stand up guy and when his funeral took place the road was filled with area bikers showing his family the respect they held for Mike. Once more I just want to thank all the members of the Capital City Bikers Church for their successful swap meet & their incredible generosity to all the O awa and area riders who showed up. Thanks also to the City of O awa and the local residents who closed off the nearby streets to allow the motorcycle riders and par cipants a place to park. The next day was the first motorcycle cruise night at Denny’s in the South Keys and the weather was co-opera ve. This year there were several picnic tables outside so that riders could get food from inside the restaurant and ththen bring it outside and eat it near the bikes and on May 26 the Sunday Motorcycle Cruise Night shared the limelight with custom cars and trucks as well and the proceeds were used for the TCB to acquire some new technology that allows riders to experience the symptoms of concussion and brain injury so they can be more aware should they bump their head and they will be asked to par cipate in some games using the technology to show how it hampers your abili es performing simple tasks. On May 25th I a ended the “Ride for Noah” a charity ride that was put on to help the family of a young boy has been diagnosed with Brain Cancer. While morning chilly and damp (seems like every weekend this year) a large number of area riders turned out to show their support for this young boy and his family. Sadly most people have no idea of how much the motorcycle community do in the name of charity and how many rides & rodeos take place eayear for one cause or another. While a

Motorcyco Beau number of people worked very hard to put this ride on I have to give special men on to Nathalie Lacasse & Roger “Bones” Nairne, who seemed to be everywhere and at every cruise night asking people to come out and support Noah’s Ride. On May 26th was the 2nd Annual Mission 2804 C.C. Run, held in Casselman, Ontaio, earning funds to help out the local air cadets. Once again I found myself ge"ng up in the wee hours of Sunday morning in the rain and cold and heading out to par cipate in this event. The town of Casselman suffered a tragedy earlier this year when the cheese factory burned down and because it was the major employer for the area, a ride and a focus on a posi ve organiza on like the air cadets was needed so the community can get on with ge"ng back to normal. When Smokey and I first arrived, not only did the weather look bleak but so did the turnout but within about an hour the parking lot where the registra on tent was situated filled with a real mix of motorcycles. There was everything from sports bike, choppers, custom cruisers and even a con ngent of Spyders from the province of Quebec. Great day & great people! On June 2nd Wrench & I of par cipated in the Na onal Memorial Ride, which le from the Na onal Avia on Museum and made its way to the Na onal Memorial Wall in Beechwood Cemetery along with nearly two hundred other riders. The Na onal memorial Ride honors those members of the Canadian military who awared us with their supreme sacrifice to keep all Canadians & others around the world free from tyranny. It may be hard to explain the inner thoughts of people who have served in the military and been allowed to grow old and remembering those who are forever eternally in their hearts and thoughts, but amongst that field of grey beards, leather vests covered in patches and pins and motorcycles lined up in forma on you cannot help but be filled with pride and I was reminded of the memory of childhood friends who never got to grow old with me and yet are in my thoughts every day of my life. Special thanks to Greg “Shep” Shepherd, the outgoing chairman of the NMR for all the work that he has devoted to this important ride also special

There was a bit of confusion at the store this morning. When I was ready to pay for my groceries, the cashier said, “Strip down, facing me.”Making a mental note to complain to my congressman about Homeland Security running amok, I did just as she had instructed. When the hysterical shrieking and alarms finally subsided, I found out that she was referring to my credit card. I have been asked to shop elsewhere in the future. Three dead bodies turn up at the Dublin mortuary all with very big smiles on their faces. The coroner calls the police to tell them what has happened. ‘First body: Pierre Dubois, Frenchman, 60, died of heart failure while making love to his 20-year old mistress. Hence the enormous smile, Inspector’, says the Coroner. ‘Second body: Hamish Campbell, Scotsman, 25, won £50,000 on the lo ery. Spent it all on whisky. Died of alcohol poisoning, hence the smile.’ The Inspector asked, ‘What about the third body?’ ‘Ah,’ says the coroner, ‘this is the most unusual one. Paddy Murphy, Irish, 30, struck by lightning.’ ‘Why is he smiling then?’ inquires the Inspector. ‘He thought he was having his picture taken’. ‘Turtle’

Toward the end of the Sunday service, the Minister asked, “How many of you have forgiven your enemies? “80% held up their hands. The Minister then repeated his ques on. Southwest distance returning from the ride. Now that’s great ming on our part considering my weekend i nerary. There were about 40 bikes in the ride that went to Ingersol for lunch then back to the grounds where the kids were just finishing up their games and chowing down. The bike games followed and then the door-prizes were doled out where I walked away with a new IPOD and a dinner for 2 in Ingersol (gave the meal to Billy, he lives closer). Everyone was having fun and they raised $1350 for their charity. Way to go guys on a fine job and...Thanks for the good me Well then comes Sunday. I hooked-up with the same crew and we headed to Hamilton to the Red Devils MC Show and Shine. This is a highly a ended func on and grows every year. I even ran into our boss here at The Rider’s Mag “Cri er” who was taking in the show. When we arrived there was parking only if we wanted to block someone’s driveway, I figured they can’t go anywhere anyways with all the bikes around so that’s where we landed, blocking the neighbour’s driveway. All good on his part I’m told. The street was lined from end to end with some very nice factory originals to full blown customs. The chrome was shining (yes the sun came out) and it was seasonably warm. I did the stroll down the street and the smell of burgers had me wandering away from the bikes and I got in line and had a very tasty grilled burger. Great job on the BBQ guys. A er drooling over all the custom bikes compe ng for the big prize we realized me had passed and we decided to head for home just as the awards were being announced. The whole weekend was a great experience and to top it off I did not have to show my driver’s licence to anybody all weekend.....yea really:-) I was really looking forward to the BikerTV Poker Run in support of the Victorian Order of Nurses that was sponsored by our friends at Duke’s Harley-Davidson in Chatham. With my weekend previously booked solid I talked to our Southwestern Rep Tim about my ordeal and he assured me the BikerTV event would be covered no ma er what. As it turned out, Manon rode in with friends from the Milton area to partake in the BikerTV Poker Run and she will be giving us all the details. All reports tell me this was a well-a ended and successful event. Sincere condolences go out to the family of Ron Brocklebank who passed away June 3, 2013. Ron was the very first Vice-President of the Queensmen M.C. when the club started in 1959. You will be remembered by many...R.I.P. Brother! Condolences are also extended to the family of Vic Tilly who passed away this week as well. Vic’s girl Suzie the Undertaker was a feature Ladies ride a couple months back.
