September! This riding season and the year has slipped by at an amazing speed and is now in the winding down stage! Heavier clothing is making its appearance as the temperature plummets along with the sun at days end which comes earlier and earlier and we edge close to dreaded Winter! The trees are turning colour and some have already scattered the ground around them with what used to be lush green foliage that have now turned into withering, shriveling, rotting, clutter (No I’m not a fan of this time of year!) that I refuse to rake up and mulch the Hell out of them with my trusty Lawn Boy! Daylight is now being rationed to us and there is a definite chill in the air! It has been a good riding season though and Mother Nature provided us with plenty of outstanding days and opportunities to get out and enjoy the Hell out of our motorcycles! Things are still not quite back to normal here at the Mag but we are still working on it and are making slow but sure progress! We have been producing full Monthly issues of the Mag on ISSUU and are trying to set up a list of e mail addresses so we can send as many readers as we can, a direct link to the newest issues as we post them! We are in the final stages of getting our new and improved website up and running as well! This whole computer problem that caused this disruption with our printed version of the Mag for the past few Months, has been, to say the very least, a tremendous pain in the ass and the source of much angst for myself and our crew here at The Riders Mag! But they say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger! That seems to be the case with us at The Riders Mag! It has certainly been a struggle and while I don’t ever want to go through shit like this again, I feel that once we get back on our feet we will be not only stronger but wiser and less of an easy target for malicious individuals! It has strengthened our resolve and our will to survive! It has made us wiser in ways that I didn’t realize we needed to be! They also say that you learn from your mistakes! That seems to be true as well as in trying to fight back we picked up on more than a few things and learned some new tricks along the way! In the process of finding solutions to our computer and internet problems, we seem to have stumbled upon, what may turn into a great sideline business that can benefit us and our readers as well! It looks like we will now be able create and host websites, web pages and so on at great prices! It all looks extremely promising which in itself is a welcome change! The Rider’s Mag - Page 6

We will be making some changes in how and where the Mag is going to be distributed and will let you know when things are finalized but one major item will be that we will now be charging $2.00 for each copy! This is necessary in order for us to survive in a World of ever-escalating costs for printing and distribution let alone the day to day costs of running an office! The reality is that The Riders Mag has to pay its own way! If it can’t, it dies! I have been out and about as much as I can but not anywhere near what I would do in the course of a normal year! I have had so much extra stuff going on right now and still have to contend with the same 24-hour clock! I’ve been invited to so many events and I feel bad about not making it here and there but just have to accept the fact that I’m only one person! I wanted to get out to the Bike and Blues show and Shine in Goderich and had my heart set on Biketoberfest in Welland but got tied up in meetings and sessions to deal with issues with The Mag and just couldn’t pull the trigger! I sent my apologies in advance to Marcy as I wouldn’t be able to make it out to Ms. Dazzle’s Ride either and it is one that I always look forward to! Plus, just to complicate things just a little further, I sheared off the bolts that attached the sprocket to the hub on my trike leaving me down two motorcycles as Petoonia didn’t get finished up in time for this riding season! We have just taken on another writer, David Rusk has decided to join our happy little crew! I personally like his style of writing and think that our readers will enjoy it as well! He brings another dimension to our pages as he rides a v twin sport bike. His deep passion for riding and his love of motorcycles comes through in his writing and he has had lots of experiences and adventures that he will share with our readers! Give him a read, I think that you will enjoy the experience! Another newcomer to our crew and creative team is Krazzy K, a brilliant but somewhat demented and delusional, old friend, who, among other things, will be doing a Biker Horoscope for us on a regular basis! He is a very funny guy and will be collaborating with myself and our other resident cartoonist Mad Mike to produce and publish an assortment of whimsical, humorous books, pamphlets, propaganda and other stuff and we, collectively, and individually will do our level best to stimulate, illuminate, captivate, amuse, confuse, entertain and mystify our readership to the best of our abilities!

The Riders Mag Show and Shine in Loretto If there was ever a venue tailor made and perfect for this event, this is it! The weather the night before, which consisted of heavy rain, lightning, high winds which churned up enormous hunks and chunks of flying debris, and other nasty stuff that mother nature usually waits until she has me out and squarely in her sites, alone on my motorcycle, on open roads, with no wind break or possible places to seek shelter from her wrath, without any raingear or other protective clothing that magically wicks moisture from sensitive body parts from chafing or cracking, to unleash, that, which wasn’t particularly conducive to holding a Motorcycle Show and Shine or any other outdoor event! weren’t very reassuring either!

The dark, gloomy, festering, grey skies of early morning

Unfazed, I threw the last few essential items into the truck and headed across to Loretto and I noticed the sun (My friend and ally.) making several brief and brave attempts (In direct defiance of that evil bitch that they all call boss!) at breaking through the dark, gloomy cloud-cover before just popping up and staying out and providing us with spectacular weather for our first attempt of a Show and Shine at this spot! Fuck you Mother Nature! We got us a Show and Shine! If the Sun had a middle finger it would be out and sticking right in Mother Natures face! I picked this bar because it has been here forever and thus, is an unforgettable landmark, has a monster property and a huge parking lot to go with it that has just undergone a massive cleanup and major landscaping! The bar is big enough inside and out to host the number of guests that we were hoping would come out! They have been doing a ton of renovations and improvements (Check out the washrooms! They don’t stink anymore and look great!) The absolute bonus, is that the owner was totally on board with the whole idea and subsequently threw a whole lot of time, effort and his own funds into making it happen, including doing radio spots on Country 105, the local Country Music station! While lots of bars and restaurants like to talk about being biker friendly and try to entice riders to their venue and encourage them to run bike nights for them, but when it comes right down to it, are only motivated by the revenue bikers and biker events can generate! I’ve been to and dealt with bars and bar owners, who host a bike night and while they are happy to have the kind of crowd and revenue the event draws on what would typically be a slow or dead night, put little or no time and effort into it themselves! Bikers are welcome then, but when they roll in on a busy night with lots of families and regular customers in attendance, not so much! Here, Moise is willing and able to put his money where his mouth is and backs it up with action! He and his excellent crew, really wanted and needed this type of event to firmly establish themselves as a credible biker friendly Venue! This would allow them to definitively showcase themselves and the type of service and substance that they could expect on each and every visit here! They would prove to these riders that they are deserving of their business! It would also demonstrate why this would be the perfect spot for motorcycle clubs and organizations to utilize as a stop for Poker runs, club functions, parties and any number of events and functions! They are right smackdab in the middle of some truly spectacular roads that simply scream motorcycle riding! The food is excellent and at reasonable prices and now that I see Labatt 50 has taken its rightful spot in the beer fridge I too, can feel truly at home! Back to the event! The Rider’s Mag - Page 7

It was a clean slate when I rolled in and got busy unloading the truck and planning the layout as there was nobody else around! This was my first time at this spot and basically, I just winged it as to where to set up the vendors, the band and such! Moise and a couple of his people arrived and once we established where

I’m really thrilled with as they are totally unique to The Riders Mag. I had hoped that he would set up a booth to display his unique talent but he had other plans for the day! I had no real idea as to how many would attend todays

the beer tents would go and we figured out where the power supply was, and that would signify where the band would set up! The rest was fairly easy! I wasn’t entirely certain as to how many vendors would be setting up so I just assigned spots in the order of when they arrived! Big James from Pace Law Motorcycle division was there bright and early and set up right next to me (Which is good because my big muscles and slugging ability deserted me after heart attack and my stroke and

sometime you need a strong young guy around!) and the rest of the vendors would just follow suit! Maxx and his crew from The Predators MC who have always been so helpful at these events over the past couple of years appeared and things really started to happen but it wasn’t until Chantel arrived along with her man Scott that things really took shape! She is the organizer from Hell and really takes charge! I had ordered some more custom-made trophies for this event from Chris at Dragon’s Forge out near Peterborough as the one he did for Baconfest were fantastic and he drove out to deliver them! He had modified them slightly from the first batch that we presented at Baconfest and they looked fantastic! We have some new designs coming for next years events that The Rider’s Mag - Page 8

event as we hadn’t done a printed Mag for a Month or so and the word would have to have gotten out by either the Online Mag, Social media or simply word of mouth! When the motorcycles started to roll in, there was nobody happier than me! You couldn’t have taken the smile off my face with a stick of dynamite! The lot was absolutely

packed and I saw so many familiar faces and got to hug and hands to shake with so many people that I couldn’t believe that it was real! The huge parking was lot filled to capacity to overflowing and there were many bikes, cars and trucks parked on the street and in adjacent parking lot! My buddy Dave whose band “Eye for an Eye” arrived and set up and did a fantastic job keeping the huge crowd! The entire day was a blur! There were a lot of different Clubs amongst all the fine folks in attendance and throughout the day and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves! We were all out just to enjoy a nice day, filled with great music, food and respect for each other and respecting each

other’s right to ride what they want, when they want and enjoy life! It all boils down to respect! Deserve it, show it, live it, expect it, give it, and receive it in turn! We were swamped with people coming by the booth all day with messages of good will and encouragement! It was great to see the Chantel, the Beast, Miss Kitty, Lucky Larry and our new addition to our sales team “G” out to help out! The Rider’s Mag - Page 10

Before we knew it, it was time to hand out the awards and bring the day to a close although some just hung around for a while afterwards! All in all, it was an incredible day from start to finish and I couldn’t be happier with my decision to bring the Show and Shine here to it’s new home, in Loretto! Thanks to all the Moise and the fine crew from the Loretto Tavern you exceeded my expectations! Thanks to Chantel and my crew for helping me make it through another event! Thanks to Maxx you and your wonderful crew from The Predators Motorcycle Club really do a great job! Thanks to my buddy Dave and his amazing band “Eye for an Eye” and thanks to all of you fine people for coming out and supporting the event and me and our crew to keep doing what we do! Thanks to all the sponsors of the Trophies; The Motorcycle Supershow, Strictly V Twin, Timothy Leigh Bell- The Bike Lawyer, Mackesy Smye Lawyer, Pace Law, Motorcycle Division, The Paradice Riders Motorcycle Club, The Brothers of the Blade MC, The Outlaws Motorcycle Club - Canada, The Black Diamond Riders Motorcycle Club, The Loretto Tavern, TombStones Cycle, The Dragons Forge, Recycled Gear, Classy Chassis, AM Sales, Wiesner Insurance, Hips Cycle, The S Bend Restaurant. Inkquisition Tattoo Studio I knew I was going to be in the area so I set up an appointment to get the finishing touches done to my tattoo on my right arm! Michelle who started the piece no longer works there so Trevor introduced me to a really fine young artist by the name of Jules! She went right to work bringing my little dragon to life on my forearm! It was done from one of my drawings as I wanted to have something of my own original creation on me. Well I guess I designed the Riders Mag Tattoo that is on my right forearm as well, but this was one of my cartoons that I drew when I did my last stint in the Hospital! It just needed to have more definition and detail put in once it had healed and it just took me a while to get the time to do it! I headed for the shop at 1769 Danforth Ave. and found a parking spot across the road. There were a number of great looking motorcycles lining the curb directly out front of the shop as a crew from the Ronan MC. were in getting some work done and socializing. They told me when I was last into the studio that they were about to start renovations and redesigning of the place but I was really unprepared for the total transformation that had occurred! It was fantastic! It was bright and airy, classy and functional and had a real comfortable feel to it! The washrooms are still in transition but the whole theme and feel to the upstairs will be carried on throughout! I settled back in the comfortable tattoo bench and Jules The Rider’s Mag - Page 14

went tom work bringing my little dragon to life and adding her flair to it! I was more than pleased with her work and very impressed with the Studio! I will be coming back soon to get some more work done! Classy Chassis Swap Meet I arrived at Classy Chassis fairly early as I had a number of stops that I had to make today, to find the parking lot full of cars, trucks and motorcycles along with throngs of people searching through piles of parts that were set up under the large tents and shelters that had been supplied by Classy Chassis and even in the bandshell! They had a section

laid out and dedicated as a used bike sales area that seemed to garner a lot of attention! I wandered through only to find my pal Gypsy radiant in all her colourful hippy attire, scarves, bling and ever-present bandanas! Her smile is always a welcome sight and a warm hug is prerequisite to any conversation! She is always on the hunt for more bandanas and has starting to even make and bling out her own and could well become the Bandana Lady I may have to rename her “Chiquita Bandana”! Any how, I continued on my rounds, checking out all the great stuff that was laid out for something that I desperately needed! No, I didn’t find a large bag of money yet but I’m on the hunt! The art of doing Swap meets for the serious Swap meet buyer is; to get there early, move through quickly on your first pass and look in every nook and cranny as the really good stuff can be evasive! You try not to get caught up in any conversations that require more than a quick mutter of a couple of syllables, with anyone no matter how long its been since you last spoke or how good a friend they are or were! A good friend will understand that you have to keep your eye on the prize! You can meet later to reminisce over a coffee while you drool over all the great stuff you found! I still have that mindset when I come to these things despite the fact that I can’t afford to buy much and actually need very little but the thrill of the hunt feeling never leaves you! I’ve discovered that want and need are two separate things and should seldom be used together in a sentence! Your wife may tell you “You don’t need another motorcycle!” but you “Want” another motorcycle and want over-rides the need part! When you bring the word afford into the conversation it can change everything! I ran into owner and head honcho, John and got to talk awhile! I explained about what was going on with The Riders Mag and that once we get all our ducks back in a row we would be back in print! We were joined by Sales Manager Josh and I was brought up to date on what has been happening around there! They said that with the riding season winding down they are preparing for the fall and winter, preparing the storage areas and getting The Rider’s Mag - Page 15

ready to start helping customers set up for the winter projects so they can be done in time for spring! They have a full schedule of workshops lined up for their customers dealing with maintenance tips and other helpful thing that will help them be safe and prepared for whatever can come their way! They said that they had some great sales coming up in the near future and that folks should keep an eye on their ads as they will be well worth their while! They have a huge selection of hand selected, used motorcycles that are all priced to move in their fantastic showroom! I made my way through the well-maintained property slowly as slowly usually describes my progress at any event that I attend as I know so many people and would be remise not to stop and talk! It is even slower these days as many want to know what is happening with the Mag and I have explained explain it all so many times that it becomes almost like a script! I take the time because they cared enough to ask and after hearing the explanation they all seem to understand and have been very supportive! I visited the large building that houses the well stocked and very neat parts and service area and checked out some of the great deals they had going on. The Mototrike trike kit caught my attention as I’m always thinking of putting another Trike on the road at some future date when budgets permit! I followed the aroma that was wafting tantalizingly through the entire property back to the Two Fat Greeks Food Truck that was stationed between buildings on the property and picked up one of the great burger and fantastic fries that I’d been seeing people walk around with, which I devoured at one of the many picnic tables! I listened to a very entertaining gentleman with a guitar run through a varied repertoire of songs that ranged from Country to middle of the road hits. Gypsy and a crew of HD-ROC people joined me for a while, before I followed a pretty little lady back to the parking lot to check out her chopper that she had been telling me about! It was definitely “Old School” with the emphasis on function rather than glitz and glamour! It was parked alongside a couple of others that belonged to her boyfriend and another friend that were obviously built on the same “Neat and Nasty” theme where there s more time spent riding them than cleaning them. Cool! At this point I figured it was time to head out and said goodbye to John Josh and Charlene before wandering away! Recycled Gear I like stopping in here, and do, whenever my travels bring me this way! They carry Riders Mag items such as t shirts pins and patches! Steve is a very interesting guy with an easy smile and always has a story or two to tell while I root around amongst piles of treasures! You never know what you’re going to find here either as he is forever making deals! He recently picked up a pile of great used Motorcycle parts that consisted of an assortment of Harley-Davidson and many other makes, models and vintages! He has everything from body parts and tin to electronics and accessories! There is a full rack of just fairings, fenders, side bags! It is a treasure hunt with really excellent prices on those treasures! There are deals to be had on clothing, boots, leathers, patches, pins, stickers and just about anything else you can think of! He does consignments, trades, barters and knows the art of haggling quite well! While I was there a gentleman came in with a couple of pairs of motocross type boots that he no longer needed and left with a great looking pair of cowboy boots! Both parties were happy! It is always a treat to come here as you never know what you’ll leave here with but the hospitality is always in store! Merv Giffen – July 19/1951 – August 16/2018 - Celebration of life I couldn’t make it to Merv’s funeral so when I got word of this get together in his honour I headed on over to the Legion in Tottenham so that I could take part in it! Merv was a truly stand up guy who loved motorcycles, riding motorcycles, talking about motorcycles and working on motorcycles! He was a great friend who was always there for his friends and had a heart of gold! I arrived at Legion and made my way inside where my Brother CB was setting up an array of pictures and other trappings of Merv’s time here on Earth but for most of us in attendance here today our fondest memories of him were carried in our hearts and in our memories of the man. The Rider’s Mag - Page 16

He meant a lot to all of us as he was always generous with his time, his love and respect for those he considered to be friends and Brothers! There were many members of the AOA here today as they knew him to be a solid friend and supporter of the Club! This was a humble/modest tribute for a man who meant a whole lot to many! There might not have been much in the way of pomp and circumstance here today, but it was a heartfelt tribute for a man who was truly modest and humble and never demonstrated anything that wasn’t heartfelt and he stood tall as a man who put more value on substance, loyalty and tangible things than glitzy, meaningless things like pomp and circumstance! In recent years, his health failed him, caused him much pain and hardship and robbed him of many of life’s pleasures and his time here on Earth may have ended far too soon but his legacy of being a righteous man who was a true and loyal friend lives on in the hearts and minds of all who knew him! We gathered and told Merv stories and shared Merv memories and raised a glass to the man and while this might be the final formal tribute but he will live on in our hearts and he will live on as the memories and stories will be shared for years to come! Until we meet again! RIP – L&R – GBNF.

Hawg Worx I had heard that Hawg Worx had moved and figured that a trip to beautiful Barrie was in order. It is always a pleasure to meet with Mark and Chris and the boys and I was due for an outing! So, I headed up the mighty 400 Highway, taking the Mapleview Ave. E. cut-off over to Welham Rd. and headed North from there and spotted the distinctive Hawg Worx signage on the corner of a building in a great looking Industrial plaza! The exterior of the shop is deceiving as it looks like a small space but once you enter the Showroom it becomes clear as to the amount of space that is actually here and when you walk into the shop portion you are totally aware of the true size and capacity of this shop! Of course, the crew here are savvy individuals who have been doing this kind of thing for years and really know how to make the most of whatever space is available to them! They have done a great job here and created a fantastic showroom, customer area as well as a truly functional work space! They utilized every bit of usable space to allow for maximum flow and accessibility while taking into account the need for storage and other essentials of a very busy The Rider’s Mag - Page 17

and efficient shop! It is also noted that there is room to expand all of these features with the addition of a mezzanine and or racking in the future when need arises and budgets permit! This is a crew of level headed, clear thinking individuals who love what they do and want to keep doing it! July 1st was when they actually opened the doors here but the official Grand Opening was July 10th 2018. This was a pro active move on their part as the building at the previous location had been sold and there was nothing to say that their lease would be honoured by the new owners! Rather than be left scrambling at the last-minute hunting for a new home and settling for something that didn’t or wouldn’t support them at the last minute and then have to repeat the process a short time later, they searched out new locations before deciding that this spot would best suit their needs! They have done a great job and the glass block wall provides plenty of light for their showroom and storage area and at the time of my visit was still a work in progress! Retaining all of their previous customer base was a huge accomplishment in itself and is a testament to their value as a shop! They have already begun to draw customers from other areas such as Toronto, York Region and beyond as their reputation for a being fair, honest and trustworthy shop who don’t cut corners has spread! They tell the customer what they need to know about the condition of their motorcycles, not what the want them to know! There is a difference! Mark and Chris are both factory trained who have been in the business for a long time and are very well respected in the industry! Harley is their second language! Mike Jacobs who has worked with both Mark and Chris since ’03 has become a tremendous asset to the crew and is also a much-valued friend! Rounding out the team is apprentice Ryan Tinney who has proven himself to be reliable, honest, trustworthy and resourceful! They are a progressive and everexpanding shop and as such could always use the services of a fully trained and experienced tech who as I understand are quite plentiful out there but would entertain thoughts of a 2 – 3-year apprentice to add to their team! They can do regular service and maintenance, rebuilds, tires, batteries repairs, restorations, custom work, performance work and just about anything else that is involved in keeping your Harley on the road and running as it should! Give them a call or stop by! Tell ‘em Critter sent you! (That won’t get you any bonus points with them but they will know that you heard about it from me!) Well that does it for this Month! Look for me out there but I will likely be four wheeling it for a while! I hope to get out to the Black Hawks Show and Shine up in Mount Hope! See you out there! The Rider’s Mag - Page 18

Sometimes when I ride, I start up the engine and score some tunes for the road (rock for sure, a little bit of Monster Truck, some Alice in Chains even) and off I go. But lately, I’ve just wanted to hear the rumble of my bike. When I turn the engine

on and hit the asphalt for some much-needed therapy, sometimes just listening to the engine growl is all I need. With this summer and its many ups and downs, riding has been few and far between. With people passing away, dear friends in accidents, babies coming (good lord not for me, I’m too old for that shit anymore), visitors to our home on the water and what seems to be more chores than usual around the house, it’s been challenging to find the time. We’ve done a local charity ride or two, but we have really missed out on the rides that are further away this year. One ride we attended is near and dear to me. It’s the Quinte Ride for Paws. Now I’ll be honest, any events that benefit our cherished Veterans, or our furry buddies and you can bet that I’ll be there. This time around, this event is for the latter. Mother Nature, being the cruel hearted bitch that she can be, presented some rain, but it was minimal. There were door prizes, a 50/50, a silent auction and tunes. I was given the privilege to MC this event, and to be the true dork that I am, but with a microphone!! Oh, the fun to be had! The show and shine was full of bikes, and this time, yours truly won! Now I was given shit and a stern talking to by one of the judges though, all because my white walls were dirty. That’s a 3-hour job and I’ve no time for that! I just started working out so that my ass doesn’t become too large for my poor little Harley softail to take. The Rider’s Mag - Page 22

No excuse, slapped my wrist, moving on! There are regular supporters at these rides, and to my dismay, two boys that were always a large presence had recently passed. I’m talking recently, as in since the end of August. Both were unexpected. Phil Cook, who I should note, was the Ambassador of the Quinte Ride for Paws. I met Phil years ago at this very event, but I didn’t know him well. I knew of his love and support for us riders, and he had so many friends (this I noted as we are friends on facebook). Knowing that, I needed to provide a justice to this young man and give him the respect that he deserves, I asked my favourite photo guy Brad, if he could help. And he did not disappoint. Brad knew Phil on a more personal level, and I think that Phil deserves that type of remembrance here. “The biking community has lost one of their most energetic supporters. Phil, “Hotwheelz”, Cook passed away suddenly on the 5th of September 2018. His loss has shaken many foundations, his presence was felt in the local musical community, hiphop especially, the disabled community, and of course, the motorcycle community. Phil loved motorcycles, that was evident, he never missed a chance to hang with his biker kin whenever a rally was to be had; he loved the sounds, the people, and the spirit. Phil may have been stricken with Duchene Muscular Dystrophy, but, in his words, “I don’t have a problem with Muscular Dystrophy, it has a problem with me!”. Muscular Dystrophy is a cruel neuro-muscular disorder that steals a persons ability to properly use and coordinate their muscles; it also slowly robs that person of those muscles. Phil was a upstart against this disease however; he was 25 years old when he was taken from us, well past the normal age where someone with this disease would normally have passed. Phil was proud of the fact that his spine was still straight, and he could still operate his chair on his own. Phil wasn’t very tall, and he couldn’t walk, but this giant of a man strode across the many hearts and cultures here in Quinte West, and left us with the stuff on legends. Ride on buddy, ride on.” -Brad Denoon, CD2 - Memento Vivere, Memento Mori Not long after absorbing this news, another local supporter of the biker community passed away. His name was Bill Smart. This gentleman had such a big heart, for

everyone and anyone, and he’d give you the shirt off his back. A few of my biker friends mentioned his passing, and it’s crazy sometimes when you find out who knows who, and just how people are known by many in the community. Bill was one of those people. RIP my friends…I did not know you long, nor did I know you well. Your legacy though, will undoubtedly go on by way of all the people that you touched, in and out of the biker community. With all the sad news, you sometimes need to get your ass outside and on your bike, and just ride. On the odd Wednesday, some of us head out to Marmora for a good ride and some good food. I’m all about the food. That goes back to my need to start working out. I’ve got chocolate hidden all over the house. Thing is, my itch is satisfied just buying the chocolate. I don’t always follow through with eating it. That’s where poor Mike comes in. He plays hockey three or four days a week because of my bad habits. Don’t get me started on pastries…where was I?? Oh..right..Wednesday night rides…so on one Wednesday, a good band was playing called Big Motor Gasoline. A few of my sexy Windsisters were there, and of course, shenanigans ensued. Now I’m not a drinker, but I did par-take and there’s video!!! I’m talking two at a time! It’s called a Jolly Rancher drink…it’s like liquid candy!!! Now, Marmora has a couple of sweet little restaurants to check out if you’re a rider. The Iron Grille caters to our biker buddies on Wednesdays usually, and the Iron Rooster caters to my biker buddies anytime. And their food is fantastic!!! They have parking for bikes, cars and rigs! Plus, there’s a big rooster out front! (Now, I know of a more derogatory term to be used for the big rooster, but I’ve gotta behave!) But I got pictures!!!! Now, I fail to surprise myself anymore when I try to function sometimes, just in general really. Even when just getting ready for the ride. I’m thinking that The Little Red Rapid Deployment Platoon out in Norfolk England has their hands full with me. You boys have no idea. Honestly, I am guilty of leaning over to close my saddlebags while at the same time, locking my leather jacket zipper in the saddlebag closure... leaving me stuck to my saddlebag… yeah..I did that. You’re surprised? You really shouldn’t be. I lay out in my articles what I’m truly capable of sometimes and honestly, I should drink more! I will say, I have learned to finally turn my lights off so I’m not draining my battery! Progress, I think not. The fact that I’m locking myself to my saddlebags shows that I’m going backwards and not forwards. But…being able to laugh about it is healthy, and I’m sure Mike and our friends find it mildly entertaining. They’re laughing at me..with me…they’re laughing…that’s the important part. And they love me! Being part of the Windsisters Riding group of girls,

I’ve met a lot of great, supportive people that have taught me a little bit about myself. One such chick is Sista P! This girl has a big heart and has been there for everyone. When I found a mesh riding jacket online that I bought to help keep me in one piece while out riding, she was able to bring it back from Ottawa for me. When a girl lost her wheels, she offered up one of her bikes for her to use in the meantime. She’s there, it seems, for everyone. Now recently, our queen Hen, Miss Linda, was trying to get a group of us girls together (with the hubbies) for a little fun around the fire pit. It was last minute, but I was only too happy to oblige to use our place. We’ve got water, water toys, and a huge hammock!!! Now a few girls were out on a ride that day, so they stopped in for a visit. It was during this visit though, that a good friend of mine, on her way over, got hit not far from my house. When our neighbour came over to let us know a rider was hit, Mike and I booked it to the corner. I was running from the truck so fast, I lost my sandals! Now, my friend was scratched and bruised pretty good, with some fractured bones, but thank god she survived! Too many bikers are getting seriously hurt and even killed these last couple of years, so I was overjoyed that she was going to be ok. She was a character even then though, cause the first thing she said to me when I leaned down to hug her was, ‘Your snacks are over there,” as she pointed to the middle of the road where the snacks were in fact, scattered. I laughed at her, telling her there was more to worry about than that. Once Mike and I came back to the girls that were still at the house, they had to leave to continue they’re ride, but Linda and Sista P showed up. There were snacks, flowers and we even got Linda on a jet ski (sorry Frank, one will be parked by her cottage soon enough!). While sitting out back, Sista P asked about my vest. She asked about patches as I don’t have many. With my vest, the patches on it are very near to my heart. The HHR patch, the Royal British Legion Riders Branch patch, my Allied Memorial Remembrance Ride patch, and now, my Ally patch. Sista P gave it to me, and I was so grateful for it. It’s meaning, as she suggested I look up, means a straight/heterosexual ally who supports equal civil rights, gender equality, LGBT social movements, and challenges homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. And Sista P told me it meant that anyone who wears this patch, is there to let the LGBTQ that they have their support! Well sign me up!!!! I have a few friends who are lesbian, and a few gay fellas that are buddies and I couldn’t ask for better friends. I’ll wear my patch with pride. (Now, I do have one more patch to mention. That’s my ‘Asshole Merit Badge’ patch. But, The Rider’s Mag - Page 24

If I said I wanted to check out your ass, would you turn around and walk away? That’s a cute dress. It would look even better on my bedroom floor. And it would look fabulous jammed into your windpipe. Here I am! What were your other two wishes? That he be charming and handsome. I guess not all wishes come true. All those curves and me with no brakes. So cheesy, and me with no pizza. Are you a parking ticket? Because you’ve got fine written all over you. No, but you must be a jury notice, because I’m trying to avoid you. I feel like a library card, since I’ve been totally checking you out! Did you notice that I’m like a best seller? Currently unavailable. If you were a McDonald’s burger, you’d be the McGorgeous. Thanks, Ronald, but I’ve already talked to enough clowns tonight. The Worst Age “Sixty is the worst age to be,” said the 60-year-old man. “You always feel like you have to pee and most of the time you stand there and nothing comes out.” “Ah, that’s nothing,” said the 70-year-old. “When you’re seventy, you don’t have a bowel movement any more. You take laxatives, eat bran, sit on the toilet all day and nothin’ comes out!” “Actually,” said the 80-year-old, “Eighty is the worst age of all.” Do you have trouble peeing, too?” asked the 60-year old. “No, I pee every morning at 6:00. I pee like a racehorse on a flat rock; no problem at all.” “So, do you have a problem with your bowel movement?” “No, I have one every morning at 6:30.” Exasperated, the 60-year-old said, “You pee every morning at 6:00 and crap every morning at 6:30. So what’s so bad about being 80?” “I don’t wake up until 7:00 !!” ******************************** It was late Halloween night and three young vampires went into a bar. “What will you have?” the bartender asked. “I’ll have a full glass of warm blood,” the first replied. “I’ll have a full glass of warm blood, too, thanks,” said the second. “I’ll have a full glass of warm plasma,” said the third. “OK, let me get this straight,” the bartender said. “That’ll be two bloods and a blood light?” ************ A company has come out with a line of medical marijuana dog treats. According to a new report that just came out, the average college freshman reads at a seventh grade level. Or if you’re an optimist every seventh grader now reads at a college freshman level. ************ Eric is sitting at the bar staring morosely into his beer. Tom walks in and sits down. After trying to start a conversation several times and getting only distracted grunts he asks Eric what the problem is. “Well,” said Eric, “I ran afoul of one of those trick questions women ask. Now I’m in deep trouble at home.” “What kind of question?” asked Tom. “My wife asked me if I would still love her if when she was old, fat and ugly.” “That’s easy,” said Tom. “You just say ‘Of course I will’”. “Yeah,” said Eric, “That’s what I did, except I said, ‘Of course I DO....’” ************ I was recovering from surgery when a charity representative phoned asking me to take part in a door-to-door fundraising effort. “Sorry,” I replied, “but I’ve been incapacitated.” Undaunted, the caller kept trying to convince me to change my mind and volunteer. I interrupted and said, “I’m incapacitated. Do you know what that means?” She hesitated. “It means your head was cut off?” ************ Some lettuce, an egg, and a faucet had a race. What was the result? The lettuce came in ahead, the egg got beat, and the faucet is still running. ************ I got invited to a party and was told to dress to kill. Apparently a turban, beard, and a backpack wasn’t what they had in mind. After a night of drink, drugs and wild sex, John woke up to find himself next to a really ugly woman. That’s when he realized he had made it home safely. Seven wheelchair athletes have been banned from the Para-Olympics after they tested positive for WD40. A teenage boy asks his granny: “Have you seen my pills? They were labeled LSD?” Granny replies: “The hell with the pills, did you see the dragons in the kitchen?” Wife gets naked and asks hubby: “What turns you on more, my pretty face or my sexy body?” Hubby looks her up and down and replies: “Your sense of humor!” Hospital visiting hours are 5:00 to 8:00.) A buddy’s wife is back on the warpath again. She was up for making a sex movie last night, and all he did was suggest they should hold auditions for her part. (His viewing will be Saturday from 7:00 till 9:00.) I accidentally swallowed some Scrabble tiles. My next crap could spell disaster. I woke up this morning at 9:30, and could sense something was wrong. I got downstairs and found the wife face down on the kitchen floor, not breathing! I panicked. I didn’t know what to do. Then I remembered McDonalds serves breakfast all day. My missus packed my bags, and as I walked out the front door. She screamed: “I wish you a slow and painful death, you bastard!” I replied: “Oh, so now you want me to stay???” The Rider’s Mag - Page 27

Bought the wife a hamster skin coat last week. When we went to the fair last night it took me 3 hours to get her off the Ferris wheel. The other night, my wife asked me how many women I’d slept with. I told her: “Only you. All the others kept me awake all night!” (The doctor says I should be able to see again in about ten days. The broken arm will take about a month to heal.) ************ While waiting in line at a busy airport check-in counter, I noticed a set of rambunctious little boys in front of me. As the line inched along, their mother tried in vain to get them to calm down. Finally she reached the counter, where the ticket agent asked her, “Have any of the items you plan to take with you on this flight been out of your immediate control since your arrival at the airport?” The young mother replied honestly, “The luggage, no; the children, yes.” ************ The federal government is starting to plan for climate change by making extended forecasts that can help people plan for extreme weather - because what can go wrong when you combine the efficiency of government with the accuracy of weathermen? *********************************** A young Scottish lad and lass were sitting on a low stone wall, holding hands, gazing out over the loch. For several minutes they sat silently. Then finally the girl looked at the boy and said, “A penny for your thoughts, Angus.” “Well, uh, I was thinkin’... perhaps it’s aboot time for a wee kiss.” The girl blushed, then leaned over and kissed him lightly on the cheek. Then he blushed. The two turned once again to gaze out over the loch. Minutes passed and the girl spoke again. “Another penny for your thoughts, Angus.” “Well, uh, I was thinkin’ perhaps it’s aboot time for a wee cuddle.” The girl blushed, then leaned over and cuddled him for a few seconds. Then he blushed. And the two turned once again to gaze out over the loch. After a while, she again said, “Another penny for your thoughts, Angus.” “Well, uh, I was thinkin’ perhaps it’s aboot time you let me put my hand on your leg.” The girl blushed, then took his hand and put it on her knee. Then he blushed. Then the two turned once again to gaze out over the loch before the girl spoke again. “Another penny for your thoughts, Angus.” The young man glanced down with a furled brow. “Well, noo,” he said, “my thoughts are a wee bit more serious this time.” “Really?” said the lass in a whisper, filled with anticipation. “Aye,” said the lad, nodding. The girl looked away in shyness, began to blush, and bit her lip in anticipation of the ultimate request. Then he said, “Dae ye nae think it’s aboot time ye paid me the first three pennies?” ************************************** Now we know what the problem is !!! Ray and Bob, two Government maintenance guys, were standing at the base of a flagpole, looking up.

A woman walked by and asked what they were doing. “We’re supposed to find the height of the flagpole,” said Bob, “But we don’t have a ladder.” The woman said, “Hand me that wrench out of your toolbox.” She loosened a few bolts, then laid the pole down. She then took a tape measure from their toolbox, took a measurement and announced, “Eighteen feet, six inches” and walked away. Ray shook his head and laughed. “Well, ain’t that just like a ‘Miss-know-it-all’ woman?” he said. “We need the height and she gives us the length!” Ray and Bob are still working for the Government, but now both are in Supervision. ************ Three psychiatrists were complaining about how they had to listen to everyone else’s problems without ever sharing their own. As a way to lessen their burden, they agreed to share their problems with each other. The first psychiatrist said, “I’m addicted to painkillers. I regularly write myself prescriptions.” The second psychiatrist admitted, “I’m a compulsive gambler. I overcharge my patients to pay for my gambling addiction.” The third psychiatrist took a deep breath and then shared, “I can’t keep a secret. Cycle of Addiction Confessions

By David Rusk

overrun.popandcrackle@gmail.com (I feel their eyes upon me.) Hello. (My chair squeals embarrassingly loud as I stand, awkward.) My name is David and I’m new here. I am an addict. (Traditional to such meetings, as a group.) Hello David, welcome. (The creak of wooden pews in the silence terrifies me as I white knuckle the lectern and begin my story.) It was back in ’73 when I first heard them, madmen on two wheels. From out there beyond my bedroom window they sent a spike full of howling exhaust straight into my pleasure circuit. (Soft murmurs of agreement and an uneasy rustling from the crowd, my death grip loosens.) Later, I found myself alone in the dark recesses of a corner store when I first opened a cover. My trembling hands revealed Eddie Lawson flying high on just one wheel and with four pipes puffing blue smoke he chased a shady character named Fast Freddie. Who were those carbon fired freaks so full of fury and discipline, those roaring speed junkies? I was holding my breath and before I could exhale a trellis exo-framed monkey clamored onto my back and sunk its radial mounted claws deep. First it was the glossy pictures but the words soon followed, promising knowledge of a world I knew little about and after that, well I was hooked. (Half heard sobs and words of encouragement from the crowd now, the momentum was building.) Addiction began with what seemed like a measured attempt, the common hook of 400 cc’s parallel in the frame. The experts say its a gateway but oh, the fun we had, Seca and I, laughing as we saw the world together. Gratitude as memories rushed in, their first time relived. The innocence was a ploy and as I spiralled down, Yamaha waited to push it’s exotic 500cc V4 into my veins. Like all addicts, I began to explore where Nirvana lurked, out beyond any reasonable level of skill or sane recourse for law and life. Oil injection drove me insane and I was tossed aside to watch my RZ die at the roadside. Whispers, accusing craziness, just out of reach. From there my life spiralled out of control. A second oiler from a dealer named Suzuki who pushed the ragged rush of rotary disc valves and, as promised, the RG was even more addictive. A vicious circle of blue smoke, used rubbers, wheelies, speed tickets, weeds and broken bones shot me straight into depravity. I was lost in an adrenaline-fueled race to the finish line. A death run, burning high grade uncut speed that was pumped straight into the mind of a frenzied youngster. Concealed looks of shame or maybe it’s rabid hedonism. Deep into it now, I don’t care. We all know how the cycle goes, that first rush and then a lifetime trying to reach that same high. All those blurred early mornings and straight on until evening runs, chasing a The Rider’s Mag - Page 30

dragon’s tail. How the sun was so bright we hid behind dark visors and cursed the shadows across our path. It was so hard for us to see the danger’s but we still cranked our right wrist and risked it all. (Cries of agreement barked as the currents of turmoil roiled, the crowd is ready.) Then it happened, at over 200 I crashed. It’s funny how addicts will spring to their feet and run full tilt back to the beast that almost killed them. Mindlessly and with no concern for broken bones or the dreaded rash, we try to pick up the pieces and will our dead machine back to life. (Silence! I try to find my lost voice in the void.) I’m sorry, I don’t think I can go on. (Frightened faces, begging me.) I ran to the smashed machine, so far into the forest. Ghastly, it stood propped against that birch tree surrounded with broken body parts. I can’t help her, I can’t pick the pieces up, my hand is broken. I can’t….. she’s dead. I am lost, returned to the scene. (Murmurs and undertones of encouragement pulse from the audience. I quickly wipe a tear away and smile.) When I zipper that leather and armor to my body and lower the dark visor against the sun, I am home. I was made for this! (Raucous shouts and applause. I look close in and the grizzly Harley rider in the front row has tears streaming down his cheeks.) Looking back, I am surprised to be alive. Such stupidity and with no regard for the law! I raced so far ahead of my abilities, faster and faster I ran through my supply. I freely poured the luck on the pavement with no concern for when the bag would run dry. (Squids, wannabes, racers, one percenters and iron butt long haulers, they were all crying now.) Hello, my name is David. I’m new here and I am an addict just like you! Hello I’ll do the awkward part right now, I ride a sport bike. Is that awkward anymore (?), my experience is yes but in a strange and mottled way. You and I are the same and when one of us bravely steps into the grey area between we realize this, but unfortunately sometimes our stubborn stupidity finds us snatching glimpses from opposite sides of the parking lot. Weird and uncomfortable, two rival teams. Not all the time, but it still happens to me, despite my bike being a big V-twin and what’s left of my hair now showing way more white then youthful black, when the helmet comes off. Squids and wannabes, now there are two words that are charged with angst. They both exist and they both ruin the opinions of the other side. I can’t explain wannabes because I don’t understand enough but squids I do know. They exploit the overkill offered by sport bikes and when they threaten innocent people through indignant actions well, you can throat punch them but after me, get in line! In my search for a new publication to host my words I skipped The Riders Mag because in honesty, I thought it just wasn’t my place. Li’l Red told me to approach Critter and see what he said, and as it turns out, my timing was perfect. Our road Captain is planning big changes for the magazine and after reading some of my stuff, Critter has welcomed me onboard to tell of the sportier side to our passion. I am excited to find out where this will lead and intrigued to discover the “other sides” secrets and to tell of sport bikes and the mature, precise riders that make up the majority of the Power Ranger squad. We will discover that we are the same. A little about me then. I’ll be 52 this fall and been riding since age 15, always sport bikes. I have done some really stupid things on two wheels (like you probably) and paid the price. I am an ex-racer and track day enthusiast and I know the physics and mechanics involved well enough to stay alive. How and why I ride will come through my words here and you will find out that I strive to help riders. You will read about psychology and mindset, about feelings and friendships, terror and loss. My sport bike is a bike, a machine. What interest’s me is the operator, the complexity of our passion. What I want to understand is you…and me. The Rider’s Mag - Page 31

Jessie Lee’s Open -Road Experience

Hello and happy hot summer! I’m not sure what the forecast has been in your world, the triple digits have been hanging out here south of the border! Not quite up to 666 but I’ll still say hotter t h a n hell. I’m currently riding a l o n g t h ro u g h Montana on my way to write next month’s adventure and it is 103 degrees here today. The western states are known for their desert-like temperatures and large uninhabitable land masses. Some of these places are rather impressive to travel through if you pick the right time of year, which would never be August! I’ve never been good at learning from others experiences or advice so I’ve traveled the west on 2 wheels in the dead of summer on more than one occasion. One of my favorite areas is southern Utah. There is a huge loop around the lower half of this state that includes 5 National Parks and a few other noteworthy stops. It is red rock desert land where the wind and weather has formed some of the most incredible structures. Now I’d suggest early spring or late fall to visit and avoid tourist

The Rider’s Mag - Page 32

season along with triple digit heat index’s. A few of the places that are on my “must see” list is great for hiking, dirt biking, 4x4-ing (that might not be an actual word?!), or just good old-fashioned road tripping and sightseeing. The 5 National Parks, if you care to Google them up or go old school and flip through your Encyclopedias, are; Arches NP, Bryce Canyon NP, Canyonlands NP, Capitol Reef NP, and in expected alphabetical order, Zion NP. Aside from the National Parks, this area of Utah is also littered with National Monuments. There is, in no particular alphabetical or geographical order; Glen Canyon, Natural Bridges, Grand Staircase Escalante, Cedar Breaks, and, just over the Colorado state line, Canyons of the Ancients. That’s a whole lot of names and things there but you can see and explore it all in 5-7 days depending on how ambitious you are and whether or not you like to sleep in. There are only a few well-travelled and maintained routes around

the areas. I highly recommend HWY 12, 24, 95 and 191. Then if you are feeling frisky you can venture south into Arizona on 89 or 163 and see the mighty Grand Canyon and Horseshoe bend. Be warned not to get your hopes up if you dip south of the Utah border, there is No ferry in Harpers Ferry, and no lake at Jacobs Lake. I’ve never come across much for wild life in these parts either except for the occasional tumble weed or dust cyclone. However, I have been warned to watch for scorpions, snakes, and certain arachnids that I personally would rather not meet. Despite all of that there are hidden gems throughout the desert such as waterfalls and raging rivers through the many canyons. The millions of years of nature forming the towering monuments out of the rock walls is nothing shy of unbelievable. The size of these arches and statues is incomprehensible even when you stand there in the middle of it all. The colors can be quite impressive on the right type of sunshiny day. If you’re up for some mild hiking you can reach a few destinations in Arches park where you will be in awe of how on earth these formations could be sculpted between massive walls of rock. If you are into a more challenging “hold my beer and watch this” type of hike you can stop in Zion NP and walk Angels Landing. It will test your fears of heights and your trust in just how surefooted you are. There are plenty of curves south of Moab to practice your riding skills while cruising around giant rocks right along a beautiful winding river surrounded by walls of carved out red rock. Somewhere out in the great wide open there are hundreds of miles of off roads trails all leading in and out of Moab. There is a lot of serious off-road equipment out in that area and many TV shows filmed about extreme 4x4. It is a good idea to plan ahead as far as accommodations go. Twice I was out that way and ready to pull off for a night after a long hot day in the sun on the bike aaaaaaand there were no rooms to be had. There are campgrounds around but in the summer in the desert I’m not in a big hurry to hit the dirt without a shower or flushing toilet. I’m not saying I haven’t done that but more just explaining that sometimes I can be a complete Sally and want girly things like indoor plumbing. So, after living and learning I’d advise you fine folks to plan things ahead if you can. Honestly you never have to leave your saddle or seat to enjoy a good chunk of what southern Utah has to offer. Many of the wonderful things out there can be observed from the roads as you roll by. Just remember August is not the time to vacation unless you prefer 100+ days and every other tourist in the states at all the major cities and attractions! I’m hoping to be telling you all about my Canadian adventures next month so stay tuned!!!

Don Dymond - Bacchus MC

November 1, 1946 – September 18, 2018 Don was a solid and proud member of the Red Devils Motorcycle Club in 1968 and remained so until the Club patched over to Bacchus MC and he remained such until he passed in September of this year! He was one of three remaining in the Club from those early, glory days of The Red Devils! He served as Sergeant at Arms and was well respected amongst his peers as a solid, stand up individual! Many of the new members called him legend! Don delighted in playing jokes on his Brothers and you could find him laughing away to himself once a good prank was accomplished! He will be missed by his family, friends, his Club Brothers and anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him! L&R – GBNF – RIP

Andrew “Teach” Simmons

December 22, 1946 – September 24, 2018 Andrew “Teach” Simmons was a lifelong and well-respected member of the London Chapter of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club. Andy passed away on September 24th at his home in Kingston, Ontario. Andy’s passing is mourned by his club brothers, family and friends. L&R – GBNF – RIP

Don Granger

Wild Ones MC - 1947-2018 Don AKA “Hollywood” was a well-respected member of the Wild Ones MC, dating back to the early years of the 60’s. He rode a blinged out purple decker that he kept in his kitchen at times! The bike actually got stolen once but it happened after a heavy snowfall and it was an easy crime to solve, as they just followed the fresh tracks in the snow to where the bike was stashed! Today it just makes for a story to remember those days gone by and a brother who has now departed the world! He will be missed by family, friends and club brothers. DANGEROUS DONNIE

FROM DURHAM

THE DIRT FROM DONNIE (DURHAM’S NON DANGEROUS)

Well as a wise man once said “if things don’t change they will probably remain the same” For those of us for more years than I can recall read the Riders Mag cover to cover every month may note that the last issue was available online only. I know there are many of the vintage scooter trash amongst us that have never read single word on a “puter” or desire to, but I would say they are the remaining maybe 2% of the people that have chosen to refrain. Critter (Publisher/Editor/Cartoonist/advert Sales mgr/Delivery man/Reporter and all round Saint (Righteous Rick Davis) has been beating his head against a stone wall to the point that he is used to it now and just rolls with the pain trying to get ink back on the pages and out to masses. I am somewhat behind scenes and I just feel awful to see the massive efforts he has put in over the years to take the RIDERS MAG from its humble beginnings (the JR days) to the quality FREE publication it is and to hit the proverbial wall of time/money/rising costs of doing business that he faces now. If there is Good Biker Karma , it’s time the it made a feckin’ appearance to grease bearings and get the train back on the track! Other than that, I have failed once again to go on the cross country trip that every year I say I will. I didn’t even hit NB to see my pal Ricky in Moncton which would have been an easy ride, compared to slogging my way out to the Pacific and back. I put on the usual seasonal miles on my 2011 Road Glide Ultra which I was not in love from the first day I rode it home, so I have been hard on it, not babying it like my last 6 HD’s, but that being said it runs great, with a sweet spot at 120kph and I think the next one will be RGlide as well. My summer; Been running often to north of Bancroft to Madawaska Valley, as they call it now with Great riding up that way! Staying at shack, rarely a day of rain all summer, was absent from many events that I shudda, cudda went to, but also lent my hand to playing live music with THE CREW, that consists of some of Canada’s very best players..(Guitarist Danny Weis for one, the original founder of IRON BUTTERFLY, went on to form RHINOCEROS in LA who moved up to Canada two years ago and I hooked up with him) I did visit some of our advertisers, AM Sales looked at some sweet deals on late model HD’s ask for Greg if you wander up there (Keele Street north of Rutherford in Concord) Last weekend was a Poker Run sponsored by Malicious Cycles on St Clair in Toronto and the ride organized by Phil and Dave M. of The Rangers MC. This ride is a fund raiser for their niece Scarlett Mcmann’s education (she lost her dad a few years back) I was there for the sign up and had to hightail it to another commitment. Of course, I had to say hello to Smilin’ Bryan who runs Malicious Cycles and Clothing plus a huge inland Marina service. So boats, bikes or clothing it’s there for ya. So now as I crunch these words on to my “puter” screen it’s halfway thru September and there are The Rider’s Mag - Page 40

There are 13 twisted spokes in creation of my wheel I use instead of the common 12. Since this wheel is created this way, this allows the reader to approach the wheel in 2 ways. As each sign represents a spoke in the wheel, you can read either what your own spoke has to say or read what all the spokes have to say to share a visual to the whole picture. See how all the spokes complete your wheel. The 13th spoke is what I call the “Dath Spoke” It is the spoke that binds all other spokes together, so you can see exactly what wheel(s) you’re using for your ride. Milwaukee-Eight Oil Pump Issues III of IV Harley describes a sometimes problem in Milwaukee Eight engines by the term sumping. H-D defines sumping as “when an excessive amount of oil is suspended in the crankcase and the flywheel must travel through the oil, resulting in a loss of power or a high degree of engine braking and potential engine component damage with extended use under these conditions.” I believe I have a variety of environmentally forbidden solutions. There is also a major redesign and thus untenable way out. Further, I have one acceptable and viable resolution to the engine braking and sumping issues. Engine braking and sumping can plague a MilwaukeeEight engine that is ridden at higher, consistent rpm in any gear and/or has had high performance work done to it. Specifically, The high performance work referred to by H-D is the Stage IV performance enhancements. However this problem can result from any performance modification that increases engine displacement (size) or encourages higher rpm riding. However, we should also understand that the 107 cubic inch engine is almost the same size as the previous biggest H-D engine, the CVO 110. The current 114 cubic inch engine is the largest production engine in Harley history. Harley’s 1929 to 2006 engines range from a mere 45 cubic inches to 61, 74, 80, and 88 cubic inches ... all from very small to not that big when compared to the new Milwaukee-Eight 107 and 114 cubic inch beasts. I mention this because larger engines have bigger swept volumes, which can easily contribute to engine braking/sumping. Swept volume refers the area the pistons travel in their bores from Bottom Dead Center (BDC) to Top Dead Center (TDC). Swept volumes equal the engine’s cubic inches or the metric equivalent in cubic centimeters (cc) when the engine is at rest. Once the pistons begin movement swept volume increases relative to the rpm (revolutions per minute). This is how the size of the engine relates to higher rpm in terms of swept volume. The increase in engine size as with the Milwaukee-8’s also increases the static (at rest) swept volume to aggravate the same conditions as riding in the higher rpm ranges. Interestingly, the causes of braking/sumping are the same as those for the previous Twin Cam and predecessor engine blowby boondoggle that allowed oil to escape the engine through the EFI’s (electronic fuel injection) air filter. So, what does this mean? As the pistons descend and ascend in tandem in their respective bores, inside engine air is displaced. The larger the swept volume combining with higher rpm, the more air that must constantly displace. If the air is not allowed to adequately vent to the outside atmosphere, then too much air contains inside the engine. This creates efficiency problems in because air restricts internal component movement relative to if there were a partial crankcase vacuum. In my opinion, the internal Milwaukee-8 breathers, one in each head are too restrictive to allow adequate venting.

Why? Emissions dictates, particularly the Euro Community’s Euro 4 regulations prohibit any oil from venting (blowby) outside the engine. They want only clean air exiting the engine. Therefore Harley is preventing this blowby but consequently also prevents adequate venting for engine efficiency. However, the larger issue is the churning air picking up oil molecules and forming a gaseous, oilified mixture that interferes with oil removal (sumping) from the engine. This mixture enters the oil pump along with liquid oil. The pump depends on oil’s inability to compress in order to work. The air compresses, reducing oil pump pressure and volume. H-D and the aftermarket are trying to solve this problem with larger oil pumps. Let’s go back to the Milwaukee Eight issue of transmission oil entering the primary chaincase compartment. Why does this not happen on Twin Cams? Well, it sometimes does occur but the cause is a blown seal. There is no pressure buildup in the Twin Cam because their internal engine breathers allow displaced air to vent into the outside atmosphere. However, in the Milwaukee-8, there can be an air pressure buildup in the transmission that forces oil laden air past an otherwise perfectly good seal. Why is this? The engine vents into the transmission area above the oil level. H-D is desperately trying to fight physics principles by containing venting gaseous oilified vapors from escaping the engine and polluting the atmosphere as well as marking its spot with condensing oil from the venting air. This is why the crankcase breathing is routed to the transmission “sump” cavity while some rising air and oil will manage to make it into the heads. So, there is a new generation of a new one-piece breather valve located in each head designed to separate oil molecules. The first generation breather introduced in the Evolution motorcycles in 1992. The subsequent Twin Cam breathers became more sophisticated with the M-8’s refined further… perhaps too much. Harley is hamstrung against some easy but bootleg cures that contravene EPA, CARB, and Euro 4 sanctions. The first is running a vent line to the open sump space above the oil tank reservoir oil level and then venting the oil cap. This could cure the engine braking/sumping problem. Too much potential crankcase pressure is why the the oil reservoir cap screws on in later engines, otherwise it could pop out with the increase in crankcase pressure. Another easy cure would be venting the transmission, much like was done in the pre-1977 4-speed transmissions. One of the transmission cover screws had a hole drilled through it to allow pressure buildup to dissipate into the atmosphere. We can also fool with the stock M-8 breathers to allow more air out of the engine but then possible oil will drip, drip, drip from the air box and air filter. Yes, returning to Twin Cam style breathers in each head would allow the engine to breathe (vent) but it would also allow oil to drip out of the breather with larger cubic inches and sustained high rpm riding. Of course, this is what causes the current M-8 sumping and engine braking with the current restrictive breathing. In my experience, Harley is really good at creating a new The Rider’s Mag - Page 45

difficulty(s) by resolving a current complication. However, if the engine were redesigned so that one piston ascended its cylinder while the other descended and vice versa, the forced air churning would cancel somewhat as venting demands would decrease dramatically. An aggravating but not causal problem for engine sumping and braking is loose M-8 piston cooling jets. Each locate at the bottom of their respective cylinders. They are screwed to the right side engine casing. It is common for the jets to come loose and dump oil into the bottom end. I always advise checking their attachment screws for correct torque after replacing the current gasket with a quality Cometic gasket. Their function is to squirt oil up underneath the piston domes to relieve around 500 F heat from the piston crowns that are exposed to searing combustion heat. If loose, the engine runs hotter. The reason they are not a cause to the problem at hand is that the squirted oil drips and splashes to the bottom end anyway via gravity when functioning correctly. However, parts will wear faster because oil is not cooling the pistons as much. This may also precipitate spontaneous combustion (detonation) in the combustion chambers with the temperature rise causing engine damage. And what if the 2-screws per cooling jet fall out with the oilers right behind them? It ain’t good. Armageddon comes to mind. A common, rider preventable cause of the engine braking and sumping will occur if unknowingly overfilling the oil tank. H-D riders and absent minded mechanics do this all the time. Following is some great advice from the very knowledgeable company, Feuling www.feulingparts.com that we all should follow regarding M-8 oil tank levels and idling an M-8 on the side stand. “OIL LEVEL NOTE - DO NOT OVERFILL OIL TANK It is important to get the correct hot oil level in your bike. Feuling recommends running the oil level 90%-99% full when hot The Milwaukee-Eight oil pick up port is on the right side of the engine. Letting the bike idle or warm up on the kickstand will naturally fill the engine case and skew the oil level in the tank. Feuling recommends steps to achieve proper oil level: 1. Check cold oil level. 2. Ride the bike until operating temperature is reached. 3. Shut the bike off while still in the upright position. (This insures an accurate reading) 4. Once the bike is on the kickstand check oil level. 5. Add or remove oil as needed.” Next month, I am going to go out on a long, skinny limb and propose an environmentally sensitive, EPA, CARB, and Euro 4 legal cure to solve the problem of too much air in the engine and thus the engine braking and sumping issues that can occur in some Milwaukee-8’s. And, we will get some extra performance while preventing possible premature component wear. What else could a Harley rider want?

Hello Fellow Riders! At the time of my last article, my husband Lloyd and I were anxiously awaiting what was supposed to be our last big ride of the season - from Mississauga, Ontario to Wildwood, NJ which was to include a southbound ride on route 97 from Hancock NY to Port Jervis NY. Just prior to departing for our trip on Friday, August 24, I had checked the weather forecast and it looked fantastic across the eastern seaboard. Hankster 2.0, my modified Honda Shadow Aero was ready to go as was my hubby’s Yamaha VStar 950 Tourer. We loaded up the bikes Thursday night and rolled out Friday at approximately 3:30 in the afternoon. Anxious to cross the border, we went along the 407 and eventually merged onto the QEW all the way to the Peace Bridge in Fort Erie, Ontario. No panic this time as I was now experienced at crossing the border having done so in late June when we rode to Ocean City, MD. We stayed in East Aurora, NY at the Hampton Inn where we found a few bikes parked for the night. East Aurora is a village in Erie County New York, just southeast of Buffalo. The Hampton Inn is located 1 block from Main Street where you will find boutique shops and several restaurants. The hotel is biker friendly and accommodation includes a hot breakfast. Saturday morning, we got going bright and early towards the Hampton Inn located in Matamoras PA, just a few minutes outside of Port Jervis, NY. The entire ride of 440km would take approximately 6 1/2 hours on back roads excluding stops, so we planned to take the entire day to reach our final destination. Hancock NY is where route 97 starts if going southbound, and is approximately 380km southeast of East Aurora so our plan was to reach this spot no later than 5pm so that we could enjoy what would be the last hour of our journey in daylight. We made it to Deposit which is a small town situated in Delaware County, New York, nestled in the Catskill Mountains in the valley of the West Branch of the Delaware River. We were only 30km from Hancock NY so a bit behind schedule however the sky was blue, the sun was shining, and nothing could be better. We stopped to take some pictures to capture the beautiful scenery. We were The Rider’s Mag - Page 47

so happy to be riding - the day could not have been better. As we pulled out onto Route 10, something didn’t feel right with Hankster 2.0. I started to get a bad feeling - the clutch was not responding properly. When we made a right turn onto Route 67, I knew that I was in trouble - I could not get the bike over 50mph and the engine was revving very high. I had experienced this issue approximately a year ago, shortly after the centrifugal force clutch was installed into the bike. I managed to get the bike into the town of Hancock NY where we stopped for gas. Why I found it necessary to do this, I don’t know. Perhaps I was hoping that once the bike cooled down that everything would return to normal but even as I filled the tank, I knew in my heart that I was doomed. As I pumped the gas, I saw a McDonald’s across the street and thought to myself that we should just park the bikes there and figure out what to do. Over the years, I have learned that you should usually listen to your gut, especially when it is screaming at you. We were just a few minutes from the start of Route 97 however it was later than we had planned and being in a mountainous area with a motorcycle that did not appear to be functioning properly, I feared that we would get stuck in the middle of nowhere as the sun set. Rather than listen to my screaming gut which was yelling “GO TO MCDONALD’S TO FIGURE THINGS OUT”, I chose to lead the way to Route 17. My logic was that it would take us less time to get to our hotel and if the bike died, we would be in an area where it would be easier to get help. Looking back, this was not the smartest thing to do. There was obviously an issue with the clutch that would not magically improve, so why go further away from home? It didn’t take long before I could not get Hankster 2.0 over 5mph. So, we pulled over on Route 17 just before exit 89. As I got off the bike, I was mad with myself, I was mad at the situation and I was mad at the mess that I had gotten ourselves into. I called AAA (thankfully I had purchased a package with my cell phone provider which allowed me to use my cell without having to worry about insane roaming and long-distance charges) and after what seemed like an eternity, I was told that the bike could be towed at no cost up to 100 miles. I do not consider myself to be a stupid person, but looking back, it’s amazing how circumstances can make one panic. All I could think about was getting the bike home. We also had a reservation in Wildwood NJ for the next evening, and if we did not turn up, we would lose our deposit. As I sit here safe and relaxed in my home typing away, it is easy to think of alternatives that I could have pursued. I could have had the bike towed to a nearby hotel which would have given us time to think things through logically. I could have rented a U-Haul to transport the bike home myself. Could have, should have. At the time, this did not even enter my head. I made arrangements to have the bike delivered to the Marriott in Amherst New York where a very special friend of mine agreed to pick it up Sunday morning. As this was much farther than 100 miles, it would cost approximately $800usd. I must admit that I was getting very worried - here we were, on the side of a road in the mountains at 6pm with the sun starting to set. In addition to this, a deer decided to investigate why we were so close to his territory. Once he felt that he had watched us enough and that we were no threat, he disappeared. Despite the traffic, not one car or motorcycle stopped. It was nearly 8pm by the time my bike was loaded onto a truck which made my eyes tear. It was agreed that we would meet at the Marriott the next morning at 9:30. I hopped on the back of Lloyd’s bike, and after all of the riding which we had done that day, we started the journey back. The Rider’s Mag - Page 48

It didn’t take very long before the sky turned black. Despite the clear night complete with what appeared to be a full moon and a sky full of stars, I did not find beauty in any of it. I was cold, we were tired and I was still mad. After riding for approximately an hour, we decided to stop for the night and found a hotel in Sayre, PA. We were a 3-hour highway ride away from Amherst NY at that point, and felt that it was best to try to get a good night’s sleep so that we could recharge our batteries. Sunday morning found us on the road bright and early. We pulled into the Marriott hotel parking lot shortly after 9am to find our good friend waiting for us with his trailer. He had come all the way from Sudbury, Ontario just to help me. Shortly after 9:30, the truck with Hankster 2.0 showed up and after offloading from one vehicle to another, the three of us went to eat breakfast. It was approximately 1pm when Hankster 2.0 was off loaded at Motorcycle Enhancements in Oakville. I had been in touch with John through this whole ordeal so he was expecting the bike to arrive. After we parted ways with our friend, Lloyd and I returned home for a short nap after which we loaded my car to return to the States. The Aloha Motel in Wildwood NJ agreed to move our arrival date from Sunday, August 26 to Monday, August 27 so we ended up back at the Hampton Inn in East Aurora New York Sunday night. While we had a very nice relaxing vacation, I could not help but cringe every time I heard or saw a motorcycle. I was pissed that we were not riding. The whole point of the trip was to be on two wheels, not in a cage. Well, at least we were away. If you ever think of going to Wildwood, NJ, know that the Aloha Motel is biker friendly, clean and has a several different types of rooms. It is approximately a 15 minute walk to the closest bar which is called the Number 1 Tavern (home of the world famous drink called the Super Tully Nut which despite its billing has never been heard of unless you have been to the bar) and an additional 5 minutes to get to the entertainment district which has several bars and restaurants. The hotel is also a 20-minute walk to the 3-mile boardwalk which has traditional beach stores, many restaurants, a few bars and an old-fashioned amusement park. There is even a bike rally at the beach called Roar to The Shore however it was scheduled to take place the weekend following Labour Day therefore we would miss it. This was just as well as I was not in the mood to do anything motorcycle related. I was in a funk. After a week in Wildwood, we headed home and passed many of the same places that we rolled by on Lloyd’s motorcycle a short time ago. On our way home, we stopped into Dewild Honda Powerhouse in Hamilton, Ontario as I wanted to speak with someone about Honda DCT motorcycles. This type of bike would allow me to ride without having to have a centrifugal force clutch, meaning that if there was ever an issue, any shop could fix it where now I am dependent on a specialized group of mechanics. As I had my clutch fry twice, I could not help but feel uncomfortable about ever taking my Shadow on a long-distance trip again. The Rider’s Mag - Page 49

DCT stands for Dual Clutch Transmission that automates the clutch and shift operation while retaining the essential structure and direct acceleration feel of a manual transmission. A DCT is an automated manual transmission which uses two separate clutches for odd and even gear sets. They can also function like an automatic transmission, shifting gears on their own, or can be manually controlled via paddle shifters located on the left handlebar near the grip. I was looking for a Honda CTX DCT and was quickly told that they were not available in Canada. However, the Africa, NC750x (both too high for me), and Gold Wing (too high and heavy) were available with DCTs. Argh!!!! I was frustrated! The following weekend was a bash in Port Severn held by our Southern Cruisers Riding club. As Hankster 2.0 was being repaired, I had no option but to ride my first bike, Hankster 1.0, my 2017 Honda Rebel 300. While this is certainly a much different ride that a Shadow Aero, I was still able to take myself where I wanted to go on my own motorcycle. The weekend turned into a great time and helped to lift my spirits as I was still in the dumps at not having my Shadow. It was great to sit around a campfire with old and new friends, swapping tales about everything from bikes, to rides and everything in between. It seemed like the weekend had just started when we were starting the ride home. It was very chilly that Sunday and there was a possibility of showers. Thankfully, we missed that, but the chill was a reminder that the riding season was about to enter the homestretch. Hankster 2.0 was still not ready and I was told that it would take a while so I started researching Honda CTX DCT models and where I might fine one. I found 2 at Bob Weaver Motorsports located in North Tonawanda, New York. How could I not investigate? So, on Saturday, September 22, Lloyd and I rode to the shop. My Honda Rebel 300 rocked the QEW and we enjoyed a great ride on an absolutely beautiful sunny warm day. I wasn’t planning on buying a bike - I just wanted to see the two which were available……. until I sat on one. Hankster 3.0……. a black 2014 Honda CTX DCT. I could imagine myself riding for long distances very far from home without a care in the world. I called John at Motorcycle Enhancements and sent a variety of pictures. As soon as he told me that he would be able to figure something out, I went to sign the deal. Modifications will be minor in comparison to my other two bikes. All I will need is to have a thumb throttle fabricated and mounted on the left side in addition to having the front brake lever relocated from the right. That’s it!! No modified clutch. Importing a bike into Canada is very new to me and I have learned a lot as a result of my purchase. Tomorrow is Monday, September 23 and I will be going to Bob Weaver to pay the balance owing. I can then start the process. My plan is to pick the bike up and import into Canada on Friday, October 5. Hopefully I can have it certified and have the safety completed the same day, after which it will be transported to Motorcycle Enhancements for the magic to be done. Next season, it will be my main ride. My next article will explain the process involved with importing a motorcycle from the United States which, if I was allowed to think about too much, I may not have even considered. Sometimes, you just have to do things and not let anything stop you. I have been living this my whole life, so why stop now? Thank-you for reading and until next time, why discourage when you can encourage! ang 647-226-2921 angsan@sympatico.ca ang@angproblemsolved.ca WEBSITE:

Police describe the suspect as ‘single.’ ************************************** This little old lady goes to the doctor and says, “Doctor I have this problem with passing gas, but it really doesn’t bother me too much. It never smells and it’s always silent. As a matter of fact I’ve passed gas at least 20 times since I’ve been here in your office. You didn’t know I was passing gas because it doesn’t smell and it’s silent.” The doctor says “I see. Take these pills and come back to see me next week.” The next week the lady goes back. “Doctor,” she says, “I don’t know what you gave me, but now my passing gas...although still silent, it stinks terribly.” “Good”, the doctor said, “now that we’ve cleared up your sinuses, we’ll start to work on your hearing.” **************************************** A small West Virginia Wild Animal Park had acquired a very rare species of gorilla. Within a few weeks, the female gorilla became very horny, and difficult to handle. Upon examination, the park veterinarian determined the problem: The gorilla was in heat. To make matters worse, there were no male gorillas of her species available. While reflecting on their problem, the park administrators noticed Ed, a part-time redneck intern, responsible for cleaning the animals’ cages. Ed, like most rednecks, had little sense, but possessed ample ability to satisfy a female of ANY species. The Rider’s Mag - Page 51

So, the park administrators thought they might have a solution. Ed was approached with a proposition. Would he be willing to have sex with the gorilla for $100? Ed showed some interest, but said he would have to think the matter over carefully. The following day, Ed announced that he would accept their offer, but only under three conditions. “First,” he said, “I don’t wanna have to kiss the gorilla.” “Second, you can’t never tell no one ‘bout this.” The park administration quickly agreed to these conditions, so they asked what was his third condition? Ed stated, “You gotta give me another week to come up with the hundred bucks.” ************ A college student could not take his seminar final exam because of a funeral. “No problem,” the teacher told him. “Make it up the following week.” That week came, and again he couldn’t take the test due to another funeral. “You’ll have to take the test early next week,” the professor insisted. “I can’t keep postponing it.” “I’ll take the test next week if no one dies,” the undergrad replied. By now I the instructor was suspicious. “How can you have so many people you know pass away in three weeks?” “I don’t know any of these people,” the student exclaimed. “But I’m the only gravedigger in town.”

************* A woman visited a psychic of some local repute. ************ I was in small-claims court when I listened in on the case of a woman who held a good job but still had trouble paying her bills on time. “Can’t you live within your income? “No, Your Honor,” she said. “It’s all I can do to live within my credit.” ************ Teacher: Give me a sentence about a community helper. As she moved through the aisles she saw bananas and apples and so many things that made her recall rather than forget her erotic mood. She ended up buying far more than she needed. When she arrived at the checkout there was a young man packing bags. As he packed her bags his muscles gleamed under the fluorescent lights and she could make out the contours of his fit body under his tight T-shirt and trousers. She could hardly control herself. After she paid she asked the young man if he could help her to her car with her many heavy bags of groceries. The young man willingly obliged. As they walked through the car park the lady finally lost control. She placed her hand on the young man’s butt and said “I have an itchy pussy”. To which the young man replied “You’ll have to show me where it is ‘cause all these Japanese cars look the same to me”. I nearly became a Doctor. continued on Page 59 The Rider’s Mag - Page 52

Well here we are in the September issue of the riders mag and I am finally back on the road and able to make it out to as many events that I am able to. Here is waht I have been up to since the last issue. Hawks MC Show and Shine It was a beautiful Sunday morning and I headed down to Touchdown Pub at 912 Barton Street East for the Hawks MC annual Show and Shine. I was finally back on the road after recooperating after my accident in May and finding a new bike so I left my place at 11:00 a.m and arrived at the Touchdown Pub at 11:15 a.m. I was greeted by Hank and a few of the other members before parking my bike in the designated area. I headed over to the registration table to register my bike in the show and I talked with Whitey, Charlie, and Grumpy on my way over to register. I registered my bike and talked with Dave and a few of the other members of the Hawks before wheeling around and looking at all the different bikes of every model and make that were showing up for th show and shine. I also stopped to talk with Billy Donald and Larry Bielak to catch up since I hadn’t seen them in a while ( thanks again for the talk Billy I really apprecaite it brother). While I wheeled around the parking lot I stopped to talk with this one and that one, contributing writer Maxx and his crew from the

The Rider’s Mag - Page 58

Predators MC showed up and I talked with them all for a bit ( it is always good to see you all). I checked out some of the vendors that were on site and I stopped to talk with Lissa Hill who owns Lissa Hill Leather if you are looking to get some leather work done look her up on Google she does awesome work. I ran into an old friend Thom (Dok) and we talked for a while and caught up on our lives ( Hey Critter Dok says hello). I was looking for some shade to get in as it was hot out and that’s when I saw the guys from the Genuine White Boys MC from Selkirk and my bro Al from the Ace’s and Eights MC ( it is always good to see you all). It was also good to see and talk to Helio Nunes and his wife Sandy, Tj Prue, Bill Mclaren and his lady Vera and Angie, Claudio and Dj (who I had just met that day through Angie) it is always good to see you all. It was time for the trophies to be handed out and the winners to be called unfortunately I didn’t get any pictures as I forgot to grab my camera before I left or a list of the winners but congratulations to the winners again and thanks to the Hawks MC for having me. Well that is all for the issue that I have been up to for this issue I hope everyone is having a good summer and riding season.

When I was young in the 1960’s, I decided I wanted to a be doctor, so I took the entrance exam to go to Medical School. One of the questions asked of us was to rearrange the letters PNEIS into the name of an important human body part which is most useful when erect. Those who answered ‘spine’ are doctors today. The rest of us are sending jokes via email ! ***************************************************** Hillary phoned the President’s office shortly after midnight . “I need to talk to President Trump, it’s an emergency!”, exclaimed Hillary. After some cajoling, the President’s assistant agreed to disturb his study time. “So, what is it that’s so important that it can’t wait until morning?”, grumbled Trump. “Supreme Court Judge Ginsburg just died, and I would like to take her place.”, begged Hillary. “Well, it’s alright with me, if it’s OK with the funeral home.”, replied President Trump. ****************************************************** Five Horses Is Her Name. This is mystical and deep. Truly beautiful... A man asked an American Indian what was his wife’s name. He replied, “She is called Five Horses”. The man said, “That’s an unusual name for your wife. What does it mean?” The Old Indian answered, “It old Indian Name. It means... NAG, NAG, NAG, NAG, NAG! *********************************** On the first day after his divorce, he sadly packed his belongings into boxes, crates and suitcases. On the second day, he had the movers come and collect his things. On the third day, he sat down for the last time at their beautiful dining-room table, by candle-light; he put on some soft background music, and feasted on a pound of shrimp, a jar of caviar, a bottle of spring-water, and 3 cans of sardines. When he’d finished, he went into each and every room and deposited a few half-eaten shrimp dipped in caviar, and some sardines into the hollow center of the curtain rods. He then cleaned up the kitchen and left. On the fourth day, the wife came back with her new boyfriend, and at first all was bliss. Then, slowly, the house began to smell. They tried everything; cleaning, mopping, and airing-out the place. Vents were checked for dead rodents, and carpets were steam cleaned. Air fresheners were hung everywhere. Exterminators were brought in to set off gas canisters, during which time the two had to move out for a few days, and in the end they even paid to replace the expensive wool carpeting. Nothing worked!...People stopped coming over to visit. Repairmen refused to work in the house...The maid quit. Finally, they couldn’t take the stench any longer, and decided they had to move, but a month later - even though they’d cut their price in half - they couldn’t find a buyer for such a stinky house. Word got out, and eventually even the local realtors refused to return their calls. Finally, unable to wait any longer for a purchaser, they had to borrow a huge sum of money from the bank to purchase a new place. Then the ex called the woman and asked how things were going. She told him the saga of the rotting house. He listened politely and said that he missed his old home terribly and would be willing to reduce his divorce settlement in exchange for having the house. Knowing he could have no idea how bad the smell really was, she agreed on a price that was only 1/10th of what the house had been worth ...but only if he would sign the papers that very day. He agreed, and within two hours her lawyers delivered the completed paperwork. A week later, the woman and her boyfriend stood smiling as they watched the moving company pack everything to take to their new home and, to spite the ex-husband, they even took the curtain rods! I LOVE A HAPPY ENDING, DON’T YOU? ***************************************** I was installing a new door and found that one of the hinges was missing. I asked my wife Mary if she would go to Lowes and pick up a hinge. Mary agreed to go. While she was waiting for the manager Charlie to finish serving a customer, her eye caught a beautiful bathroom faucet. When the manager was finished, Mary asked him, “How much is that faucet?” The manager replied, “That’s a gold plated faucet and the price is $500.00. Mary exclaimed, “My goodness, that’s an expensive faucet - certainly out of my price range..”She then proceeded to describe the hinge that I had sent her to buy. The manager said that he had them in stock and it was $3.49, then went into the storeroom to get one. From the storeroom the manager yelled. “Ma’am, you wanna screw for the hinge?”... On Friday August 31st Matrix and I traveled up the Ottawa Valley to show our support for our brothers in the Simple Men MC who were saying goodbye to one of their own, Adam “Murray” MacGregor who was killed while riding his motorcycle coming from their clubhouse a week earlier. Adam left behind his lovely wife Stefanie who is expecting a new baby in December and their two young daughters Lennon & Ruby. The ride up was a reminder that Matrix had been badly hurt just a couple of months before by some idiot who did the classic turn left without checking for motorcycles and he now has a leg filled with metal rods, plates and screws and walking with a cane. Murray was a member of the local volunteer fire department so it was appropriate

that the funeral procession was led by a fire truck with all it’s lights flashing and was driven by a childhood friend,

Roy Church and followed by the family and then an honor guard of his brothers on their motorcycles.

As it is with many funerals I have attended over the years, I still get that pride of brotherhood and community when I watch columns of riders in a procession pass and hear the roar of their Harleys as if to let Valhalla know a warrior is on his way. We were awed by the number of people who came and by the number of different clubs and independent riders that made the trip up because with it being the Labor Day Friday, a work day with overcast skies, I thought the turnout would be mostly local. This is one of those times that I was thrilled to have called it wrong. Now I know we all came to take part in a funeral followed by a Celebration of Life but to be honest, it became something much more than that, it became a Celebration of B ro t h e r h o o d ! There were many different patches too, like; The Celtic Brotherhood, the Old Bastards Vintage MC, Soldiers of Jesus MC, Burn Out Boys RC, Capital City Bikers Church MC, Veterans Canada MC, Canadian Veterans MC, Black Pistons MC, Outlaws MC, Falcons MC, Eyes of Odin MC and others along with countless independent riders and add to that The Rider’s Mag - Page 61

by a Celebration of Life but to be honest, it became something much more than that, it became a Celebration of Brotherhood! There were well over 500 people in attendance and to see bikers, firefighters and the public bond together you realized it was all about brotherhood, family and community. At one point in the funeral, Dean Batstone

a Canadian singer/songwriter and member of the SMMC tried to sing a song that he had composed for his brother Murray, but as much of a professional as Dean is, his voice kept breaking and finally he read the song aloud to the crowd. At the completion of the ceremony Roy Church asked me to take some pictures of all the members of the VFD who came which was over 40 and I realized that these

were also Murray’s sisters and brothers and I was glad that I had brought my camera to capture the moment for them as well. For the next hour everyone chatted among themselves and Duane Chevalier and other members of the SMMC did their best to thank everyone for coming. Finally, it was time for everyone to head out to Dunbarr’s Barn for the reception. Some of the SMMC led the procession of motorcycles out of the cemetery and some remained behind to guard the rear! Every time I am part of something like this, I am struck by how powerful an image it is to those watching. The gathering at Dunbarr’s Barn was just what was needed, because the club had provided platters of food for their guests and there was a bar! The facility has a lot of open areas outside where people could gather and begin the process of healing. It was surreal to see the mixture of men in suits and ladies with dresses talking and laughing with others who came in black leather and bandanas bringing home the reality that it isn’t what you wear that makes you a brother but if you

don’t have brotherhood you don’t have much. Matrix and I left a couple of hours later so he could get home and nurse his leg after being up on it all afternoon and I had things to get ready for the breakfast that The Celtic Brotherhood were donating and serving to all the riders out of Ottawa who were participating in the 1st Annual Simple Men MC Poker Run & Pig Roast! The ride would end up at their clubhouse in Forester Falls. The run was to be a ‘spider ride’ where groups were leaving from different areas of the Ottawa Valley and two of those groups were from Ottawa and the plan was that they were to meet up at Johnny Racine’s shop in Carleton Place called Canadian Gears! There, members of The Celtic Brotherhood provided their “Free Breakfasts for Brain Injury Awareness”! I would like to thank 70 plus riders who dropped by and also the rider who came by just to drop off donations but were not going on the ride itself including one rider with his son who now is with the Burn Out Boys RC, who, almost became a member of the TCB and we would have been proud to have him. Keith, “Bear” Robinson when he heard of the fundraiser for Murray, put 2 tickets, including an overnight stay at a hotel to see Ozzy perform in Syracuse New York, on a Facebook auction! Valued at over $400.00 U.S., he gladly donated it to help out the family. Much thanks to Bear and others who contributed to the fundraiser for their generosity and commitment to our motorcycle community.

After all the riders had departed, I helped the TCB pack up all the equipment and our own convoy headed up the valley to the clubhouse. I was already beat from the heat and lack of sleep, but as the motorcycles began to arrive and park on the main street and in the parking lot of the Fire Dept it revitalized me and it seemed like the weight of the last 24 hours had been lifted! For the next several hours until one of the very best pig roast dinners in the Ottawa Valley was to be served. The town of Forster Falls, generously allowed the club to provide rough camping at a sports field a few minutes down the road and the SMMC provided a shuttle bus that ran every 15 minutes The Rider’s Mag - Page 63

so that people who were camping didn’t have to keep riding back and forth to the party which included live music. The clubhouse, was once the Orange Lodge Hall so there are several floors to accommodate guests and as the weather was incredible a large number of people chose to hang outside and take advantage of it. Later in the evening Bette and I headed off to a motel we had booked and left some of the boys behind and we hear from some of our brothers in the SMMC that our brother Hark and Ron became somewhat legendary among those that partied nearly all night but I can gladly report that neither bled to death when they opened their eyes in the morning at the camping area. Peri & Tim Poirier, owners of B.A. Machine Performance Cycle held their Customer Appreciation Day called the “Grill & Chill” in order to thank all their friends and customers from over the years and because they are one of the oldest independent motorcycle repair shops in Ottawa for nearly 40 yrs, they have earned the respect and support of the Ottawa and area biker and motorcycle community. That respect is not only for their service and customer support but also for their participation in that same community by being the launching point for many of the clubs and their charity rides and a place where you can find out what events are coming up (unless you read The Riders Mag or follow me on Facebook or Twitter). Their bbq was a huge success and being that it was a great day to ride, well over several hundred riders showed up and because Peri is so well known for her management skills she had a large military bivouac tent with tables and chairs set up by the bbq pit area for those who wanted a break from the sun and heat. Brother Hark from TCB, Lovely Bette and myself joined a large number of friends and B.A.C.A. (Bikers Against Child Abuse) had staked out our area of the tent and

The Rider’s Mag - Page 64

caught up on all that was going on in our community! Actually, I suppose, because the reason for us all being there was the Poirier’s and the B.A. Machine staff create the atmosphere that was a lot like a family reunion. I was blown away by all riders who came by to greet us and with their well wishes and thanks for all the things that I try to do as the eastern Ontario representative for The Riders Mag since the very beginning 20 yrs. ago! They also wanted to thank Hark and I for all the efforts by The Celtic Brotherhood to promote not only brain injury awareness but also to promote Brotherhood. We also had a surprise visit by George Darouze, Ottawa City Councillor for ward 20 the area where not only B.A. Machine is located but also where the Poirier’s and myself live. George is the kind of politician that we need more of in the Ottawa area! He is always out among the people, listening to what they have to say! He also supports a lot of causes, including showing up at TCB events such as BEADONAR.CA for riders to help save others by registering to be an organ donor! I wish to express my gratitude for the double lung transplant that our close friend Shirley Koel received and just recently my cousin Ace back in California was also a double lung transplant. George also comes to our brain injury awareness functions and dog rescue fundraisers! On top of that rides a Harley and snowmobiles! Like I said, we need more city councillors like him and maybe then more things would get done! A very special thank you to not only Peri & Tim for a great bbq and an opportunity for everybody to get together but also to all the people who came out for it, showing all the folks at B.A. Machine Performance Cycle that they are appreciated for all they do. As always, I remind you all to support the rides and events that are created by the riders and clubs in your area because they are the same people that will come out to support your events and rides and also please remember to show your support for the businesses and organizations that advertise in our Mag and/or have proven they are truly Biker-Friendly because they have shown support for our lifestyle and deserve our support back. Also, if you have an event/ride or are a business that deals with either motorcycles or the people who ride them you might like to advertise in The Riders Mag and if so please contact me by the email address below and please remember we make our motorcycle and biker communities stronger by making them better!
