Well Happy New Year! You were in rare form at the party last night! I guess I'll just give you the basic rundown... you are no longer in the Club! I'm pretty sure that there are several who didn't beat on you then and there, just couldn't get close enough to get their licks in and they look like they may carry it over 'til they see you again! I'm also pretty sure the Cops will be around to talk to you about the incident in the Hospital and with the ambulance crew, and the cab driver! Then... The Rider’s Mag - Page 5 The Rider’s Mag - Page 5
December! Does that not send a chill down your spine? Didn’t we just get done with it? The year has been a blur and so much in the course of time has happened that it has my head spinning! For myself and The Riders Mag, as adventures go, 2019 has been a dandy! A struggle, with some hard life lessons learned, many bitter pills to swallow and plenty of tense moments along the way, for sure, but an adventure, none the less, and as I say; “Why just have a life, when you can have an adventure?” They also say; “What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger!” that remains to be seen, but I’m still on the right side of the grass and while I don’t feel much stronger, I do feel I’m still able to cope and hope to come out the other side in decent shape! The Riders Mag continues to roll along, thanks largely to my fine crew, who have become more like family than just people I work with or even just friends! They have taken up the slack and given me plenty of support, not just with the Mag, but emotional and moral support during some pretty trying times and tense moments! They have remained strong and true through the highs and lows and there seemed to be a lot more lows than highs! I honestly, couldn’t have gotten through it with out them! It has been said, and I honestly believe, if you truly analyze your life and those who have been involved in it, that if you can count your true friends on one hand you are extremely fortunate! I consider myself truly blessed as when I put the friendships, I have made from doing this Mag with true friendships I have cultivated over the past 72 years of living together, it makes my heart swell! Then, there are all of the readers out there who are sincere in their good wishes and prayers for myself and my wife and constantly inquire as to our well being! Thanks! It does mean a lot and gives me strength and resolve when times get tough! I have made my share of mistakes in my time at the helm of the Good Ship The Riders Mag! I struggled through some rough weather and angry seas and may have taken on a fair bit of water from time to time! Hell, I even scuffed her hull on some rocks, icebergs and other stuff along the way, and came really close to capsizing a time or two! We even had to put the print issue in dry dock for about 4 months last year, had the odd mutiny and lost a much-valued crewmember occasionally but we are still afloat and as 2019 comes to a close we have set a new course for 2020 and just hope for the best! “Break sail! Third star on the left and straight on ‘til morning! Heave to!” As for my lovely and much loved, bride of the past 50 or so years, Godzilla, she remains in Hospital and is making some progress but is still basically immobile as she can’t get out of bed unassisted. Her spirits are good, can converse well and has her full senses about her. She, like myself, is fighting hard and doing the best she can, with what she’s got and the people at the Rehab Hospital are truly amazing and I am confident that if anyone can bring The Rider’s Mag - Page 6
her back, they can! Anyhow, this next year holds much promise as we continue to move forward and look to the future! We will keep the print version of the Mag alive for the diehards who still have not embraced or are unable to access the digital version. It is an expense that we are willing to and will bear! We will, however, be concentrating less on physical distribution of the printed Mag which will be available at fewer outlets, other than key locations at the price of $2.00 per copy and through subscriptions. The cost of distribution to many far-flung locations has become impractical if we are to survive! We will be starting a classified section in upcoming issues in which we will be advertising motorcycle parts. I have acquired access to a large volume of vintage OEM HarleyDavidson and Indian Motorcycle parts. Big and small items that I’m sure will be of interest to the many looking to build, restore or keep on the road, vintage motorcycles. While there will be a sampling of these offerings in the printed Mag, the main focus of the classified section will be online as we can update it constantly. We have planned some other things for the near future that should be of interest to our readers as well and will inform you as they happen! With the new year, we will be thrust into the very busy Show season, Starting off with the Much anticipated and extremely popular SuperShow at The International Centre, in Mississauga Jan. 3,4,5, 2020. We will be there with our swag and our full crew or as many of us who can make it out! Donny Petersen will be there for the whole show selling and signing his books and will be featuring his new book! This event should be huge (Probably the biggest and best of the Year!) as the producers of the Show try to keep things fresh and vibrant while maintaining traditions and strive to find something of interest to everyone! Come on out and stop by our booth to say hi! I and our crew have been out and about as much as possible. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend many parties and events that I had been invited to like the ABATE Christmas Party in London and many others but they put too few hours in a day and I can only travel so many miles and have to stay within the speed limits as Rotund, Roving Reporters aren’t allowed special privileges and speed allowances! Such was the case with the recent “Riders Mag, Official, Off the Road Party!” that was held at Knuckleheads Bar in Niagara Falls due to my attending a funeral the same day in Toronto! The Beast and her entourage did attend and joined Dingo Dave in Hosting this event at a really amazing Bar! It was well attended and everybody had a ball! I will let Dingo fill you in on the details, but, from the babble I got from “The Beast” over a period of days as she gradually recovered, I was able to ascertain that the biker friendly bar and bands rocked until the wee hours, the owner of the establishment was amazing, the drinks flowed constantly
and the food and company was over-the top! She suffered and was sluggish for many days afterwards, (Which is a true testament as to the quality of any party worth attending) but it was a good pain and she is more than willing to do it again! What a Trooper! She will take one for the team and keep coming back for more!
Paul Scholes - RIP, GBNF, L&R – Sept. 22, 1947 – Oct. 30, 2019 Paul finally lost his battle with Cancer but he fought one Hell of a fight and his passing will leave a huge void in the hearts of all of us who knew him! Paul was a stand-up guy, who loved life, family and friends, motorcycles and that blue Mustang! I will miss him! Paul’s Sons sent along a picture of Paul with one of his motorcycles along with a copy of the original bill of sale for his 1st motorcycle back in 1968! A bunch of us went down to pay our respects to a man who meant so much, to so many, but they won’t be our final respects because his memory will live on in us for as long as we continue to draw breath! That is the privilege that knowing and loving him is left to us! Part of his legacy will be the smiles that he brings to our faces whenever he rides through our minds! See you on the other side, if there is another side!
Peterborough Fall Swap Meet - 2019
Kris and I along with our vicious security dog and constant travelling companion, “Rosebud” headed out before the break of dawn to the east for the 2019 version of the very popular and well attended, Peterborough Fall Swap Meet. It was a cold, damp, dreary drive across the browning landscape that was now highlighted in white due to the recent snowfall, to Peterborough! We did arrive early but the place was already abuzz with activity as vendors scrambled to set up their booths whilst visiting (Raiding) other booths to check out what they had to offer and maybe make a deal or two! We got the booth set up or rather, Kris did, as he has taken charge of the Swag and stuff and I know better than to fuck with someone who has things in order and knows where everything is! My job is to get us there and back safely, pay for meals, take pictures, talk to folks and keep the Rage of Rosebud in check! I had taken a chance this time and left her muzzle behind but they gave her a suspicious look and cautioned us at the entrance that they don’t want any trouble from her and the first blood would get her banished to the truck for the duration! She growled under her breath as we moved away and I tightened my grip on her as we quickly moved off! We are liquidating our old stock of shirts at really great prices and there were certainly lots of takers! Bud and myself wandered through the Hall shaking hands getting some pictures and socializing while keeping a keen eye peeled for bargains and stuff of interest! I stopped by to see my old friend Gord at Black Gold’s booth that was again occupying a good deal of space with all the fine stuff that he sells out of his store in Newmarket! I picked up a couple of much needed items and talked a while before moving off to explore! Morly from Recycled Gear in Lindsay had a great display of his merchandise laid out and I spotted a couple of items that I wanted and scooped them up! This could prove to be a costly little stroll! Good thing the prices were great! I continued on my travels that are more of a talkfest for me as I do know quite a few people and these events do tend to draw them out! The Hale Family (This time missing the lovely Amy, who was sunning herself in the sunny South!) came in from their fine store in beautiful downtown, Pefferlaw and were busy making deals but Bud and I stopped to chat a while as Ted was sourcing out some parts I needed (Wanted, as need really doesn’t play into the acquisition of motorcycle parts and accessories!) and gave me a price to ponder! It was great to see Tubes out and about as he has been experiencing some health issues in the past year or so and has the many friends that he has in the motorcycle community very concerned! We wish him well! Our own Swap Meet Sue (or Stitch as she is known to many), who has been going through her own devastating Health issue lately, along with her man George, had set up some of her wares and looked to The Rider’s Mag - Page 7
be doing a good business! I hope she can get a handle on that stuff! Also our own little firecracker, Dazzling Dawn also came out to check things out and brought her own entourage along with her! I was delighted to see the job that Edjo had done on a great looking Pie Wagon and had on display he had another great looking bike there as well and I intended on getting a shot of it as well but I was so taken with the Pie wagon I forgot! I’m sure we will be seeing them both at various shows in the future! I continued on my mission checking out stuff and visiting. These events really draw out a lot of folks! Vanessa and company from Pushrod Performance, Josh and his crew from Classy Chassis just up the road in Bridgenorth, Krazzy Doug from Bobcaygeon Bikefest Fame and so many all out to enjoy a day of bargain hunting selling their wares and socializing! It is as much about socializing as it is about parts and stuff! It is tradition and a genuine part of what the Biker lifestyle is all about! The face and persona of a lady whom I have come to adore, lit up the space from across the aisle from our booth. The alluring Gypsy Hugs, along with her friend and partner in crime Keely had a fantastic display of Bandanas and Bling and were attracting much attention! Gypsy has been designing and creating these bandanas for quite a while now! She has great flair and fashion sense for this kind of thing and can custom make and decorate these amazing unique items with crystals and beads and the like! She had designed some poppy themed ones and was donating a portion of the sale of them to The Royal Canadian Legion in Lindsay!
My good friend Kumar, along with his wife, had a great display of his leather goods and novelty items and he carries copies of the Mag to the various events that he attends! I heard a rumor of some new insurance surcharge that had been imposed on the vendors for this event and decided to go right to the organizer of these events Larry Pooler to get the low down! Sure enough, Larry was distributing flyers outlining the charges that are required by The City of Peterborough, implemented in September of this year requiring each individual vendor to show proof of insurance. They would accept a blanket policy that could be provided by the organizer that would cover all the vendors but it involved the outlay of approximately $2000.00 that at this late stage in the game, he could not in good consciousness, pass on to the vendors, so he ate the loss! Larry has tried to keep the cost per booth to $50.00 but can’t continue to eat the cost of insurance which amounts to around $25.00 per booth! So, unless the City has a change of heart, there will be an increase in the booth charge at future events to cover it! We will keep you posted! All in all, it was a fantastic day and we said our goodbyes, packed up and headed for home! The Rider’s Mag - Page 8
Yeah, We are going to bring him in now! Make sure the Press are all there! This is going to be huge! The guy is all dressed in Red and White, long beard, long hair, and we found his delivery list and it proves World Wide distribution! No we haven't found any drugs or guns yet but we are tearing his whole sleigh apart! The Rider’s Mag - Page 9
the wife asks. The doctor looks at her and says, "I am...I'm Dr. Pepper.". ***************************** My wife has these days when she wants "us to talk about things". We were discussing aspects of our future so when it was my turn I asked her "What will you do if I die before you do?” After some thought, she said that she'd probably look for a house-sharing situation with three other single or widowed women who might be a little younger than herself, since she is so active for her age. Then she asked me, "What will you do if I die first?” I replied, "Probably the same thing." ***************************** I have a strict policy. I will not and do not publicize unsubstantiated rumors about anyone unless they're really funny. ************ While doing a crossword puzzle, I asked for my husband's help. "The word is eight letters long and starts with 'm' and the clue is 'tiresome sameness.'" "Monogamy," he answered. ************ When Jane first met Tarzan in the jungle, she was immediately attracted to him. During her questions about his life, she asked him how he had sex? "Tarzan not know sex," he replied. Jane explained to him what sex was. Tarzan said, "Oh, Tarzan use knot hole in trunk of tree." Horrified, Jane said, "Tarzan you have it all wrong, but I will show you how to do it properly." She took off her clothing and got down on the ground. "Here," she said, pointing to her privates, "you must put it in here." Tarzan removed his loin cloth, showing Jane his considerable manhood, stepped closer to her, and kicked her in the crotch! Jane rolled around in agony for what seemed like an eternity. Eventually she managed to grasp for air and screamed, "What the hell did you do that for?" Tarzan replied, "Check for squirrel." ************

I heard that people in Hawaii are stealing cans of Spam and reselling them. So if you think you're having a rough day, imagine being the guy waiting on the corner for his Spam dealer. "Come on, where is this guy?" ************ According to a new study, children who are spanked are twice as likely as those that aren't spanked to get into fights and destroy things - which is probably why they get spanked in the first place. ************ A woman was talking to a co-worker, "I don't know what to do. My husband is such a mess maker that you can't imagine. He doesn't put anything away, I am always going around the house cleaning up after him." The friend says, "Take a tip from me. The first week after we were married I told my husband firmly, 'Every glass and plate that you take, wash when you are done and put back in its place.'" The first woman asked, "Did it help?" Her co-worker replied, "I don't know. I haven't seen him since." ************ A man and his wife are sitting in the living room and he says to her, "Just so you know, I never want to live in a vegetative state, dead to the world, dependent on some machine. If that ever happens, just pull the plug." "OK," says his wife as she gets up and unplugs the TV. ************ A 12-year-old girl comes home from her first day of sex education at school and immediately goes to find her mother. "Mom! Is it true that when you get pregnant the baby comes out the same hole the penis goes in?" she asks. "Yes, that's true Honey," mom answers. The daughter looks worried, "But won't it knock all my teeth out?" ************ A small West Virginia Wild Animal Park had acquired a very rare species of gorilla. Within a few weeks, the female gorilla became very horny, and difficult to handle. Upon examination, the park veterinarian determined the problem: The gorilla was in heat. To make matters worse, there were no male gorillas of her species available. While reflecting on their problem, the park administrators noticed Ed, a part-time redneck intern, responsible for cleaning the animals' cages. Ed, like most rednecks, had little sense, but possessed ample ability to satisfy a female of ANY species. So, the park administrators thought they might have a solution. Ed was approached with a proposition. Would he be willing to have sex with the gorilla for $100? Ed showed some interest, but said he would have to think the matter over carefully. The following day, Ed announced that he would accept their offer, but only under three conditions. "First," he said, "I don't wanna have to kiss the gorilla." "Second, you can't never tell no one 'bout this." The park administration quickly agreed to these conditions, so they asked what was his third condition. Ed stated... The Rider’s Mag - Page 11
It’s been awhile folks. Well, months actually. A lot has happened, and I did not want to bitch about my personal health issues, as it’s not why you read this Mag! Bike events, people, and pictures of rad rides I figure is what draws you in. And my sparkling personality of course! I will brief you and then move on, as I’ve had a number of folks ask me what’s up. (Thanks for your concern and thinking of me.) I’ve been having some health issues. Lung problems to be exact. Kept me from riding most of the summer. Thankfully, if we needed to get out, I could always ride bitch with Mike. And correct me if I am wrong ladies, but sometimes it allows for groping, and who can complain about that?? There’s no answers yet on the issues, with specialists, tests and hospitals in my near future. Enough said… On to the good stuff!
With winter being on our doorstep, (and I’ve seen some of you crazy bastards riding when there’s snow on the ground), this time of year gets me revved for the big bike show that’s coming!! From January 3rd to 5th, 2020, The North American International Motorcycle Supershow will be back at the International Centre in Mississauga! I know I’m looking forward to it. If not just for the bikes, but for the folks we run into that we’ve not seen in awhile. It’s awesome to hear, “Hey Red!!!” from across an isle or from the other end of the hall! One thing that I know I will miss though, is our bud and fellow writer David Rusk. He was at the show last year, won some well-deserved awards and met with some of his readers and he loved every minute of that part! The mans left us far too soon this past riding season. Miss ya buddy! I know that I mentioned winter, which means Christmas. I am so NOT ready. Not…even….close. I am one of THOSE people that do things the very last minute, the ‘online shopping, gift-card giving lazy ass so fight me’ kinda person! Lol Now those who have followed me over the last couple of years, know that I have picked fights with Mother Nature on various occasions. I’m 5’2” so my big girl panties were on and I usually think that I’m larger than I actually am! Well, I’m certain because of my mouth, we’ve had some tree troubles due to Mother Nature. Yes, I’ve called her out for some of her shitty weather, and she paid me back with a vengeance! Our big willow came down hard, with the first big piece landing in the river last year (literally right beside our dock), the second piece dropping this year in the river and taking out our little jet ski dock The Rider’s Mag - Page 12
(may it RIP), and the last piece graciously took out our fence, our canoe and our paddleboat. It was tragic and somewhat poetic. It was dark out, and we were in bed when the storm hit. A big crack and boom. Mike gets up, looks out the window and just laughs. Like a ‘well fuck’ kinda laugh. It was done. That big tree is no more and that breaks my heart. It was a big reason that I loved our place. I will say, Mother Nature’s anger saved us $6,000 in tree removal services. No chance for a rope swing over the water for me though, which if you know how graceful I am, could be a blessing. I’m sure it’s saved us on some big medical bills.
Halloween came and went. Unfortunately, because of health reasons, I chose to stay in. Don’t get me wrong, I still horded candy like a fat kid running free in a candy store, but I missed a great party that raised funds for Desiree Angels and Riders. Our friends Wayne & Marie from Riders was there, and I think Wayne’s costume was stellar! Donna (nice rack in that costume by the way doll!) and Martin were there also, as well as a great group of buddies that not only wanted to have a great time for Halloween, take the opportunity to give back and raise money for a great
skeletons of yours ya filthy bastards lol), and find any old biker shirts, bandanas etc, and put them aside. There’s a girl on Facebook that’s making quilts for our Vets and she uses these items to create them. She’s doing it to thank our Vets for the sacrifice that they and their families have made, and I wish more people appreciated our Vets as much as she does. Her FB page is Free Riders with No Borders, and I encourage you to look ‘em up! They have members from all over, not just Canada. You’ll see what she’s made as of late and if you can spare any of these items, it’ll make ya feel good! If you’d rather, hit me up with a message or email and I’ll make the arrangements to see that she gets them! cause. I’ve spoken in many articles of both Desiree and the ride in her honour, as well as of the Riders Group. The money raised by both is impressive and they don’t keep any of the raised funds for themselves, like some other riding groups do. If you haven’t already, please take the time to check them out on Facebook. Desiree’s Ride Riders I have always been a huge supporter of our women that ride. Women have become a larger part of the riding community than ever before. A lot of these beautiful ladies also plan and support events and charities and I go (and take ya all along with me!) because I know that the money is going to the people that need it. I have worked alongside a number of women’s riding groups and have been welcomed with open arms. They’ve shared with me details of what they support, and they truly do support each other without the undue drama of some other groups. I did find a special group of women riders and they call themselves Classy Sassy Riders. Donna, Marie and Sharon (women that I call friends) are admins for this group and I can’t think of a better, more supportive Women’s group (and I’ve done my research, TRUST ME!) These women really do care for their own. With my health issues, they’ve kept in touch, offering help, support, love, hugs and whatever else that I could use during this time. They plan events and raise money for charities that they support, and they have a great time doing it! Ladies, if you’re looking for a fun group of ladies, my suggestion is to check‘em out. You’ll be glad ya did. (They even plan trips away, like week-long or weekend trips and they do not disappoint!) Since it’s the gift giving season, I’m asking all you readers to look in your dressers and closets (you can keep those
Now onto the hot stuff! Our featured lady that rides this month is a sexy, sweet soul named Sue! I am proud to call her a buddy of mine. She’s independent, owns her own home, bike (and wonderfully sarcastic personality), and has been riding for over 15 years. This chick is funnier than hell, and did I mention fellas, that she’s single??? She loves to ride, whether close to home or to another town, Province or State should the time call for it, and she’s not into drama, which is one of the reasons I like her!
As always, catch me on Facebook at L’il Red’s Country’, or fire off an email at lilredscountry@gmail.com. Be safe, have a happy holiday and an amazing New Years Eve my friends. See you in January!!! The Rider’s Mag - Page 13
Yeah right! You're Santa Clause! I'm the Jolly Green Giant! My kids don't even believe in Santa Clause! License and registration fat man! I'm writing you up for speeding, no plates, no insurance and I'm pretty sure that you are under the influence of some kind of drug!

by Dawn McIimoyle I get asked to do some pretty amazing things and sometimes I forget that I am important and have an important knowledge set that can potentially help others. I was asked to Queen’s University by Servicewomen’s Salute to participate in their gendered dimensions workshops and presentations. These workshops are to gather information about the transitioning of Female Servicewomen after they leave their career to return to the Civilian world and to create a portal of resources for these individuals. My good friend and the creator of Servicewomen Salute, Rosemary, even gifted me with a room in Kingston and it was a good mini vacation. I also got to see a Woman I respect and completely admire as she is a fellow Warrior, Brittany. She is a former Infanteer and now she raises 2 Sons, goes to school full time and works at the gym her husband Arthur and her own “The Iron King Ltd” located in Kingston. On top of all of this she volunteers to help Military spouses and supports her Sister who is fighting breast cancer. Brittany is an amazing Woman and I am honoured to call her my friend. There were a lot of people and a ton of discussion however I made some valid points that I do not think will soon be forgotten. For Halloween this year I got to be my alter ego, or at least who I feel best represents me in an iconic character. Harley Quinn. I have half a dozen of her costumes and sometimes I just say fuck it and dress like her so I can remember who I really am inside and that is ok to not fit in the box that Society tries to put me in continually. The best part was knowing that in my hometown my granddaughter was trick or treating in the Harley Quinn costume I had bought her to wear. I tried to get up to go out with her and her stepmother, but I was not up to getting cold and wet. The little beauty called me though to say hello and that made my night. I really put myself to the test this month when it comes to facing my fears and challenging myself. Last year I had put my name into The Memory Project as a potential speaker. The Memory Project is a volunteer speakers bureau of Veterans and Canadian Forces members willing to share their stories of military service. I had been contacted and asked to several projects surrounding Remembrance Day this year and I was honoured to be involved and after agreeing to 3 speeches I was asked to do 4 more and one of those would include spending Remembrance Day at a grade school and participating in 2 different assemblies. I had someone try to discourage me and tell me that this would be too much for me however the majority of these speeches were with school-age children and I knew this would not be traumatic for me at all, I just needed to remember to not swear. Remembrance Day is hard for a lot of my friends and for a long time I would not even identify as a Veteran so going to the ceremony was a big NO-NO. I started to realize it was not about me though. Remembrance Day is about all the Souls that fought so we could have the freedom we do, and some didn’t come home, like my Great-Great Uncle Walter Victor McIlmoyle who is buried in Bourlon Wood Cemetery in France. He was conscripted in 1918 near the end of the War and was shot by a sniper on September 29, 1918 at 21 years old and never came home. The first speech I had was with Scouts and it went smoothly. It was only supposed to be about 20 minutes and I thoroughly enjoyed it. At the beginning the leader was introducing me and said I had something to do with the promise to the Queen. He asked if anyone could tell him about it and a boy put his arm up, then stood up and said “I know, I know” He proceeded to do a perfect Heil Hitler salute and say “All hail the Queen” I turned and faced the wall so no one could see me laugh. He was quickly corrected with “No, it’s long live the Queen” The next day I had 2 speeches then I had to get all the way to The Belleville Veteran Farmer for the social night because I knew my friend John was getting a quilt from The Freedom Riders who quilt there regularly on Thursdays. I never imagined in my wildest dreams that I would also receive a quilt, yet I did. I also got everything I wanted accomplished in my busy day done for the first time in forever. My second speech of that day was for about 75 Grade 7 and 8 students in Maple, ON and I found that I had to think quick to field some of the questions and I think I did a good job. One young boy asked me what was the worse thing that happened to me in the Military and I just said that I had to leave. The Friday morning speech

was in Scarborough and I forgot how curious kids can be and the complex questions they can ask. In a class of Grade 4’s and 5’s I was asked “Why does War start?” and “Why do some Countries think they are better than others?” The teacher asked all of the students to wear Red for RED Friday and I got to explain that it was a way to Remember Everyone Deployed once a week and not just on November 11th. In every presentation I did for the students I made sure they knew that it is not just men in the Canadian Armed Forces and I brought a picture I had made for Servicewomen’s Salute of the 4 beautiful Women that were tragically lost during the Afghanistan conflict and brought home down the Highway of Heroes. The teachers were quite impressed and thankful that I gave a different aspect with regards to Remembrance and I wasn’t the stereotypical Veteran. I also was trying to encourage the young girls that they can do and accomplish anything they want to. On the Sunday before Remembrance Day I took a drive to Peterborough with my boyfriend to check out the swap meet and see my Son. I got to see Critter and Rosebud and apologize because sometimes I take my frustration out on him when he doesn’t deserve it and he didn’t get mad because he knew I was venting. I saw Vanessa from Pushrod Performance and her better half and although she tells me his name all the time I forget. Marie from The Rider’s Group was there as well so I got a picture of the bunch of them. Then I ran into Morley from Recycled Gear in Lindsay and I always enjoy spending time with him. His Son was with him and I had met him at the store before. I love this picture of Morley; he looks like a way younger version of himself. Morley has been nothing but kind to me since I started delivering magazines to him and has never made me feel uncomfortable. He also gave me a pair of leather riding pants from his store and I appreciate the friendship I have developed there. I spent the morning at Robert Munsch Public School in Whitby for Remembrance Day and gave speech at 2 different assemblies (JK-3, 4-8). This was an amazing experience to see the children and their artwork as they brought the wreaths they had made and put them on the crosses on the stage. The primary choir sang O Canada in Ojibwe and English and then they did a beautiful rendition of “Heal the World” A group of young Women danced to Hang On, Hang On by Amos Lee depicting the ones lost and the ones remembered and this made me cry as it was very eloquently done. I felt appreciated and I even had a chair with my name on it as I was the guest of Honour. The next morning, I had to give a speech at the Bowmanville Rotary Club breakfast meeting, and I was a wee bit late as I was not expecting winter to be here yet and didn’t even have a snowbrush for my new car. I got there though, and I just missed the breakfast part, so I was actually on time. I spoke for 30 minutes about Remembrance and Women in the Military and was gifted with 4 tickets for their Concert to Feed the Need in Durham for my time. I was just honoured to be asked to participate and to be listened to. A man at the end asked my how I could not hate the Military and how I do what I do and I answered that I hold hope that one day it will change and I am grateful for my past as it made me and I keep going to show others they can as well. That Friday night my Comedian Friend Tyler Morrison gifted me with 2 tickets to his show at Yuk Yuk’s in Oshawa and I have never laughed so hard. I’m serious. I highly recommend you checking him out if you every get a chance. You will not be disappointed. I kept myself busy and didn’t let my thoughts dwell too much on negativity. I feel like I am getting somewhere and got asked to be a subject matter expert for a research study on Female Veterans and I am super thankful. I had to fight myself, submit myself, slam myself a few times before I realized, just letting the feelings and thoughts flow is so much easier and less harmful. It’s a big change but I think I deserve it. The Rider’s Mag - Page 19

December This astrology has been written in “Quin-trains” meaning there are five lines to the divination. The fifth line will reveal the answer to the other 4 lines. There are 13 twisted spokes in creation of my wheel I use instead of the common 12.
Virgo: The empress of abundance sits upon your chair Make sure what has been written is not just air Time for action and less of more thought Otherwise, what is it that you really brought Remember who you are and how did you get there
Since this wheel is created this way, this allows the reader to approach the wheel in 2 ways. As each sign represents a spoke in the wheel, you can read either what your own spoke has to say or read what all the spokes have to say to share a visual to the whole picture. See how all the spokes complete your wheel. The 13th spoke is what I call the “Dath Spoke” It is the spoke that binds all other spokes together, so you can see exactly what wheel(s) you’re using for your ride. Consider it having extra rubber for extra mileage.
Libra: Sitting in a cramped hole or your own cave Won't do you any good any day, so behave No need to be scolded for you know not Only you know what you have caught A new life will soon emerge, so learn to wave
Aries: There is much to discuss these days More or less it will depend on what one says A compromise of intellect and thought No more shall the voice be bought Now correctly, one can set one's ways Taurus: Where there are tears, there should be joy There should be an abundance, maybe a girl or boy At some point though, you'll have to stand This of course is all up to you, so demand Bring life to this new life, or is it just a toy
Sagittarius: Follow the yellow brick road for your path Do not fall aside, you'll only find wrath As all roads lead to Rome It looks like you're going home Add it all up and do the pleasant math
Gemini: You sit and ponder as to what you should do All you need to remember is to stay true There's not much you can do to change the truth By wisdom's choice, you'll avoid the sleuth It's time to leave the seat that has been attached by glue Cancer: What are you waiting for, annoyance or pain Standing by while in another day of rain Make yourself busy to occupy your mind There will be so we rest and peace of some kind After all, what you need to be is sane Leo: The old you is gone and now at rest Those different individuals around you are neither pest When you arise, you just might find another way This is so your words have weight to say Now is a chance for you to arise as best The Rider’s Mag - Page 26
Scorpio: Don't be so defensive or even ignorant of yourself You do not know what you are guarding by stealth If honour and pride are out of balance these days You'll find many other walls from these ways Look at the whole to see the actual wealth
Capricorn: The churning wheel means movement about It is finding the best way for its route The perpetual motion keeps it moving in gear Continuously, especially for a whole year If you like beer, this way makes the best stout Aquarius: Important words are conceived by due cause You are bound by the ancient laws Only six moons pass on your journey through Similar to Percevil, you must stay true At this point, no circumstances, no flaws Pisces: You've been accepted because you've earned it What to do now even if you have to sit Your accomplishment to ascend your being This also means, no more fleeing Keep on your toes, for this is just a bit Dath Spoke: When there is chaos in the field It is strength, skill and sword to wield Like a war, both sides lose to pain All in question of what was to gain And then afterwards, comes the over peeled.

Dangerous Donnie from Durham Only slightly dangerous now, but still a danger to himself. YOU PEOPLE....yah you people, the scooter trash, oops I better watch it, I don't want to lose my job here. Anyhow the Don Cherry thing is now old news by the time you read this in December, but it sure brought out the overly "sensitive" Nancy's. I am on facebook often pimping out my musical endeavors so I got into a few good word feuds with some of the keyboard warriors that live there. How can anyone living in this country of ours turn their backs on somebody who just wants everyone to honor our vets and those serving? Anyhow nuff said on that, fuk em. Well it's been long long time since I put the letters on the page and submitted them to the chief of all things Rick (Critter) of THE RIDERS MAG, I fear it's been some tough months for the Critter. with his bride in need of constant care and running the mag, paying the bills, distribution, sales, accounting, visiting events, reporting, funerals, weddings and robbing the odd 7-11 to pay the freight on every little thing! The man is a machine, and those that know him will concur. I thought I'd seen the last of Justina Trudope, thinking he will ride off to a million dlr a year bogus job with the United Nations or some bloody climate change cash grab, but he squeaked thru with the newbie's to the GTA who are terrified that Scheer would cut out some of the freebies they love. Our friends in QUEBEC said piss off to all three parties and elected the Block. Say what you will about our French cousins, they reject change to suit the whims of those that landed here yesterday and expect the rest to accommodate their cultural bullshit. Ok enough of my rambling onto things related to our community. The International SuperShow is the first week of January. Hope to see some familiar faces and quaff 10 dlr luke warm draft ale in beer garden as usual. I haven't been around too many club related events in the last many months, but you do miss the characters you meet over the years in the GTA. It's always changing, I note some long time clubbers retiring or taking a break. And sadly some that have put on their pine pajamas and gone on the last big ride. Critter mentioned in the last issue about those folks turned away at the US border for reasons unknown, but I'm pretty sure it's an issue of association. Perhaps going the party or charity event and your plate number is recorded. Certainly going thru a road block if you happen to be wearing MC or RC regalia. We know this data has always been collected, but it's passed around to who knows who, and now our rights are being trampled on again. More on this at a later date. Although it was months ago, I would like to compliment those that boycotted PD13, you can see the power of communication and the brother/sister/hood of sticking together for a cause. Big shout to the OCC crew (and Ms. Cookie) for their efforts to get the message out to everyone. The estimate is about a 50% drop in attendance, but we do feel for those decent vendors that suffered a shit kicking due to lack of folks spending the bucks. BTW Donny Petersen's book Biker 101 was a two day read (vol 1-2 ) for me, I just couldn't put it down. It's a well documented tutorial on the beginning of the culture of who, where, when and why. I noted so many familiar names and events from growing up in the GTA. Make sure you get your mitts on a copy. This week I will put the road glide into a winter hibernation, I figure I need a new battery, brakes and probably a rear tire $$$$ I doubt Santa is gonna lay those on me. Oh well I will just wait for the warm weather to come back and save up my nickels and dimes, and go see good ole Motor City Custom in the Schwa (Ron, Bill and Jamie always treat me great) But spring seems so faraway sitting here mid November. I need to go south or someplace warm, better do it soon as we sure ain't getting The Rider’s Mag - Page 28
any younger. Posting some pix of the guys in that TV series Gangland Undercover which I played small part in, my fellow background clubber Lee Baldwin has made it further into limelight, he now is a famous beard dude. Reps for several companies and people pay to take his picture, so the truth is that an ugly big biker looking dude has his good side. Check out the whiskers on this cat. We had a lot fun the show riding bikes ect. Love to do it again. A shout out to Fogger (Johnny B) for getting us in the show.
In the meantime I want to say GBNF to JANE SHARP who passed on Remembrance Day, so every November 11th we'll think of her. Hog chapters have 1000's Harley riders, I met Jane 21 years ago and she remained the one of the driving forces of the Durham Chapter raising 100's of 1000's of dlrs for charities that lady was a saint, walked the walk.
So amigo's and amiga's that's it for now Cya when I cya unless you C-me first DDD

with Dingo Here it is…almost December already. Where did the season go?? For starters, it was a late and wet spring, at least around here. When the summer like weather finally got here, time flew by, and here we are back into the doldrums of fall. More like late fall, with snow already on the ground. Personally, I haven’t got around to putting the bike up for winter, probably in hopes that a day will happen yet that I can get out and ride. But, I should get to it before some little critter decides that my saddlebags would make a great nesting area for the winter. So, what did you think of last month’s cover? I have been doing a survey of readers in my area to get an idea of what they thought. Contrary to popular belief, that is not me on the cover despite what Brenda, our graphics artist, tells you lol. Anyways, the survey has been favourable to the change, with also suggestions of “real riders” (after all it is the Rider's Mag) or a picture from one of the inside stories, featured on the cover. My thought is to make the Mag more appealing to all kinds of riders. Well, we had our first ever “End of the Season” party at Knuckleheads Bar and Grill in Niagara Falls. Many thanks to CJ and staff for all they did and thanks to the local clubs such as Motorcycle Country RC, BRO (PC) and NBS Riders for turning out in mass to this event. Some strange goings on when Pyper started playing with balloons of all shapes…. hmmm!! Balloon pool looks like an interesting game and as far as the “decorated elf”, well, you just have to stop in there and see for yourself. Wolf and Karen from Desiree’s Ride (Niagara) were there to present CJ with a plaque in recognition for all he does in support of Desiree’s Ride. Also, if you happen to stop in and CJ is there, challenge him
to the 5 Minute Chicken Wing Challenge. Sounds easy…but it’s not!! First time in my life that I have spent 7 hours at a bar…..not that I didn’t enjoy myself, it’s just a long haul for this guy. Thanks to Brenda, Linda, and what’s his name for showing up to represent the Mag.

I mentioned a raccoon last month and advice that one should keep pictures of their ride..front, back, and both sides especially if you have added aftermarket parts. Let’s face it, your insurance company has no idea what your particular ride looks like or it’s value other than by the book. Entering the Twilight Zone….imagine if you will, you are cruising down the road and one of Mother Nature’s furry friends decides to come out right in front of you. With nowhere to go, you hit the brakes, and down you go. There’s minimal damage to your bike, scraped pegs, handlebars etc. , the usual when a bike is dropped at a very slow speed. Headlight is broken and a few scratches on the paint on the left side. It’s rideable, so you get to the closest friends place or home. You contact your insurance company and they tell you to take the bike to a dealer to have the damage assessed. Imagine your surprise when the claims adjuster calls you and explains that the bike is a write off and makes you an offer, usually the book value, minus any deductable according to your policy. What is a write off? It’s a term commonly used in the insurance industry when they determine your vehicle to be a total loss. In other words, it’s when the cost to repair your vehicle after a collision is more than it’s value after deducting the recycle or salvage value. Confusing, but in layman’s terms, generally speaking, any cost to repair over 50% of the book value could be termed a write off. Now you are wondering why your bike is considered a write off when you are aware of the damages that were done. You go back and forth in telephone calls with the claims adjuster, and finally coming to an agreement that you will pay for the damages yourself and just want your bike back. So starts a series of surprises. First, you are told your bike can be picked up at the auction house! Second, when you go pick your bike up, it has other damage showing on it, some of it on the right side, and there are parts missing. Thirdly, the missing parts mysteriously show up some time later. Consider this as what can happen if you have an accident with your bike. As I mentioned before, recent pics of your bike are a must, as are, maybe more importantly, pictures of your bike after the accident, detailing the visible damage done. Keep in constant contact with the insurance company so that you know what is going on with your claim and with your bike. The Christmas Season has/ is started and there will be many Xmas parties going on. Remember to drive safe……we want to see you all out back on two wheels next spring!! And, don’t forget the Motorcycle SuperShow January 3 – 5 at the International Centre!! Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year to all!! Ride Safe, Dave The Rider’s Mag - Page 33

Cold Starting a Harley Carburetor Studies of the day, reported that 9 out of 10 Harley riders engaged in throttle blipping as a necessary and ritual act of domination. A cold engine needs a higher gas relative to air mixture for starting. There are two methods, which are choking or enriching the air-fuel-ratio (AFR) on a Harley-Davidson carburetor. All Harleys before the CV Keihin (1989-2006 Big Twin and Sportster) use a choking mechanism. These include the pre-1966 Linkert, early-1966 DC Linkert, late-1966 to 1970, 1971 to 1975 Zenith-Bendix known as the Bendix, and the 1976 to 1988 Keihin. The Tillotson was a complicated carburetor, universally hated by Harley riders of the day. We just did not understand its complexities including a low speed enrichment device (automatic economizer) to complement butterfly plate choking. If knowledgeable, the Tillotson was not a bad carb but Harley riders loved the simplicity of the Bendix carburetor. The 1989 to 2006 CV (Constant Velocity) Keihin as well as the popular aftermarket S&S Super E and G and predecessor B carburetors do not use a choke butterfly plate mechanism but instead, an enrichment (starter valve) device for cold engine starting. The butterfly choke plate is crude when compared to the CV Keihin starter valve enrichment system. The pre-1989 choke plate used on earlier Harley carburetors restricts air flowing down the carburetor throat into its venturi in order to provide a richer mixture (more gas relative to air). The butterfly plate sits inside the front of the carburetor body. It is a thin, flat plate that manually flips down, blocking most air from entering the system. Thus, less air is available to mix with the gasoline, which richens the air-to-fuel ratio. A richer AFR enables the engine to start easier but if the choke plate is left down the bike will run progressively rougher as it warms up. At this point there is a danger of the excess gas fouling the spark plugs. Gas fouling not to be confused with oil fouling coats the spark plug electrodes with a flat black, fluffy residue caused by incomplete burning (combustion) of the gas. This coating will prevent each spark plug from sparking across its electrodes causing the engine to stop. Like the operation of most butterfly choke plates, the CV Keihin enrichment circuit controls by a knob and linking cable that locates under the gas tank on the left hand side of a Harley while sitting on it. The carburetor enrichment (starter valve) device meters fuel upward through a valve chamber. The starter valve opens a passage into the carburetor venturi on the far vacuum side. Air also directs to the valve chamber to mix with the gas. Gas from the float bowl chamber will draw up into the carburetor venturi by the pressure differentials caused by the venturi effect and the descending pistons that create negative (low) pressure. Harley stopped using carburetors after 2006 because of their environmental inefficiencies when compared to EFI (electronic fuel injection). Carburetion did not permit Harley to meet ever-increasing EPA and CARB (California Air Resource Board) dictates. The more sophisticated EFI, which began use on some premium Big Twin models like the FLHTCUI Ultra Glide in 1995 and full use on all models including Sportster in 2007 does not need either enrichment nor choking systems. Instead, a computer microprocessor instructs a pressurized fuel pump to deliver gas to the internal EFI throat fuel injectors via information provided by sensors. Of course, the microprocessor knows when the engine is cold because of a head temperature sensor pickup information and instructs more gas relative to ingested air to be injected. Early CV Keihin technology did not involve a comprehensive tie-in sensor-feeding-microprocessor controlling engine-management-system. Later model carbureted Harleys until their demise in 2006 have engine management that is very sophisticated for the time on a Harley that I will talk about in a few issues from now. However, the CV with engine management still could not achieve the levels of fuel economy, emission control, and even performance that later Twin Cam Delphi EFI broaches. As a side note, the first 1995 to early-2001, depending on model, MM (MagnetiMarelli) EFI system was fraught with problems and inefficiencies. The CV Keihin was a better choice in these years. The introduction of the ever-increasingly efficient Delphi EFI, circa 2001 put the final nails in the CV Keihin and MM fuel delivery system coffins. The CV Keihin enrichment knob can incrementally pull out to a full position depending on temperature and altitude. Manuals instruct not to turn the throttle at all when utilizing a carbureted enrichment system. Nice try! Harley riders on previous carbureted bikes never seemed to learn not to touch the throttle. Studies of the day, reported within a margin of (+ or - 1) error of that 9 out of 10 Harley riders surveyed believed that throttle blipping was a necessary and ritual act of domination. Those riders that have EFI equipped Harleys quickly learn not to blip the throttle as they patiently watch for the fuel pump EFI indicator light to go out that usually locates on the speedometer face. Manuals instruct all kinds of rules for how long to leave a carburetor enrichment device on. They have instructions for hot engines, for cold engines, and instructions combining with distance rode and/or time to leave the device on. My suggestion is to use these instructions as a starting point if you are a novice H-D rider. However ‌ The Rider’s Mag - Page 36
These seemingly inanimate machines all have their own peculiar personality traits. Starting procedures will vary from bike to bike. Experiment and the bike will not be afraid to voice its displeasure until it contentedly purrs in a potatopotatoey sort of way. If the enrichment device knob is in the wrong position the bike will immediately react by idling poorly, either because of not enough gas or too much gas. The same goes with acceleration and cruising. Why is this so complicated when the system is so sophisticated? Lean (more air relative to gas) emission dictates are fooling with the laws of physics so they must compensate with more gas (enrichment) to combat too much air. These engines do not want to run initially because the air/fuel mix is way off (lean) for cold starting situations. Once the engine warms to operating temperature, it is easier to ignite these super lean AFR mixtures. The Factory finally found it necessary to issue a Service Bulletin (M-1005) in November, 1990 titled Cold Weather Motorcycle Operation to teach the vagaries of this best carburetor ever used on a Harley-Davidson. Of course … Some H-D rider blamed this foreign piece of crap for problematic starting instead of adapting to the new technology. It mattered not that much of the information in the Service Bulletin was also found in the Owner’s Manual issued with each new motorcycle under COOL ENGINE starting instructions. H-D defines cool weather as an outside temperature cooler than 500 F. The procedure delineated by H-D is to first ensure the throttle is closed, then to pull the enrichener knob full-out. Turn the ignition on and press the electric starter button. The bike should start. The rider must not touch the throttle. Herein lies the problem since throttle activation at anytime during the starting procedure will actuate the accelerator pump, which disables the enrichener system. The starting procedure as outlined in Service Bulletin M-1005 instructs a complicated 12-minute/8-mile warm-up procedure followed by more instructions if this does not work. On my own bikes, I pull the enrichment device knob full out, start her up, and begin to push the knob slowly back in. If the bike stutters, I pull it back out. If it is bogging down, I keep slowly pushing the knob in turning the enrichener progressively off. After awhile the process becomes second nature. Next issue, I will continue discuss the workings of the best Harley carburetor, the CV Keihin (1989 to 2006). Donny Petersen www.donnypetersen.com

Happy Holidays my friends! The riding season has officially ended in my world but I am happy to reminisce about my last ride with you. I think I had just crashed and burned on a mountain in Colorado when I left you all last month. To follow up, I made a visit to the local urgent care and discovered nothing was broken. My bruises are still not completely healed but I was fine to finish out my 19day expedition. After Colorado, came the deserts of Utah. I ventured down a few red dirt roads and enjoyed the magnificent rock formations towering above the canyons. I spent two nights camping my way across the state and enjoyed a local cafe breakfast before heading down the “loneliest road in America.” Highway 50 and Highway 6 across Nevada are nothing short of desolate and beautiful. The sign leaving town at the eastern state line says it all, “Next Gas 167 Miles.” Luckily, my scrambler gets about 150 before the fuel light and on a good day 180. The giant and ancient caldera these highways cross is filled with distant views of mountain ridges and massive lava flows. But, not a soul in sight, I did not pass another vehicle on the road between fuel stops. At the end of the lonely highway, I found California and the Benton hot springs. A marvelous old western town complete with a historical Inn and cemetery. My room was decorated from the late 1800s and some of the graves on the hillside were made from wood. Great food, long soaks, and a history lesson later, I was on my way to the famous Yosemite National Park. Yosemite is famous for its waterfalls and rock walls such as El Capitan and Half Dome. The park and it’s natural The Rider’s Mag - Page 38
wonders did not disappoint, I actually got to climb up into the iconic waterfall and captured a stellar view of my bike in front of El Capitan. At the end of my park tour, I found myself without a place to set camp for the night. I stopped into a general store to grab a beer and ask where I might find the nearest campground. The clerk informed me of a little secluded spot on top of Mt Raymond Rd. where camping is free. I found my way up Mt Raymond Rd and into a lovely pine forest for the night. The next morning brought an excellent sunrise and a long curvy scenic ride south into Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Park. Giant trees lined the road and I can’t say that I have ever been so humbled.
These parks are home to the world’s largest trees and all of their friends. The size of the ancient mammoths is indescribable but I did manage to capture a photo of a fullgrown deer inside of one of the trunks that can put some perspective on them. After a day wandering through the forests, I settled into a stream-side campsite for the night. I filtered some water and made some dinner over the jetboil stove before taking an icy plunge into the mountain stream to clean up a bit. The views were magnificent and the sound of the water rolling by was an excellent lullaby.
The next day began with a storm rolling through and some rather chilly temps for bike riding. I rolled along through the parks very happy to have heated grips. My destination from the parks was the coast and the Pacific Coast Highway, California 1. I made it to Pismo Beach just before sunset and found the Shared Spoon for an incredible pasta/wine dinner. The adventure north from here was the main purpose of this entire trip, the PCH had been on my bucket list for years along with the Golden Gate Bridge. I’m going to cut off here for now and leave room for a few extra photos! Stay tuned for the next leg of my adventure in January! The Rider’s Mag - Page 39
As we say goodbye to 2019 I thought I might revisit some of the highlights of the events and the people that were part of it. In spring, we went to the 4th Annual Motorcycle Swap meet in Montreal east end and had a good time but unlike swap meets we are used to in Ontario this one was a little unorthodox getting open, but it worked out fine eventually, even with vendors having only about one hour to get in and set up. The weather was the best we have experienced since last fall and because it was so nice, many riders came on their bikes and one thing is for sure, among the younger riders in Quebec, the Bobber-style look is alive and thriving! Out of all the motorcycles parked outside about 70% of them were Bobbers and many of them were very Old School in their build design. There were a number of people I know from eastern Ontario there looking for deals which included me taking pictures of swap to send by text message to friends back in Ottawa in case they wanted me to pick anything up. I had an opportunity to talk to two members of the Montreal BACA MC who I have met in the past when they came down to BACA MC Ottawa’s ride. A bit after 1:00 pm the meet started winding down so I took my last walk around to say thanks to the Montreal Swap Meet’s promoter Tony and his crew for their help and hopefully, The Riders Mag will come down to take part in next year’s meet as well. This past year also saw the beginning the Bondslaves MC Mega Swap Meet that was held the first Saturday in May which was the brain child of the club’s president Church aka Scott Towaiij who because he is a musician as well as a teacher added live music to the event which included two well known cover bands. The Mega Swap was successful with a number of vendors who came down from Toronto. Their 2nd Annual Mega Swap will be held on May 2nd at a new venue, the Earl Armstrong Arena on Ogilvie Rd because it is a larger facility and for a second year both bands Great Scott & Mothership to entertain

the crowd. In May the 8th Annual 2804 Dice Run took place in Casselman. In past I have mentioned the 2804 Dice Run was the brain child of two local bikers who decided they would like to support their local army cadet corps by raising money and their efforts paid off in a big way. Over time the 2804 Dice Run has gone from being a simple “register, ride & return for food” event to where there are lots of vendors, live music and a number of interactive events for riders to participate in. This year’s turnout numbered around 400! This was not including a number of clubs like the Knights of the Inferno MC, Veterans Canada MC, B.O.B Burnout Boys RC, Southern Cruisers RC, Last Disciples MC, Bondslaves MC, Old Bastards Vintage MC, Outlaws MC as well as the Simple Men MC & Eyes of Odin MC from up the Ottawa Valley in Petawawa and several different HOG groups. I am sure that I missed mentioning a few clubs but I apologize because it was a very hectic day so please forgive me and I will make it up to you next year. It’s too bad that so many communities have let their army cadet corps disappear across Ontario! When you see the energy these young men and women display when given the opportunity to learn new things it brings to mind the term we all use these days but see little of around us, “Old School”! Our young people need more organizations like this to belong to. Making its first appearance as an event was a Tug ‘O War with The Celtic Brotherhood suffering “defeat” at the hands of about a gazillion army cadets! I feared for our safety, being a bunch of old men but felt good that we were able to show these young people that not only do we support them but that the gap between them and adults doesn’t have to be an impossible one! A message that seems lost on many young people today. I want to give a special shout out to Hark, from TCB whose rendition of Maori War Cry just before the pull began had the crowd howling in laughter to the point of tears. The Spring Awareness Ride for Brain Injury was the victim of bad weather with the ride being cancelled last
minute! The invitation to come to the Greely Legion to hang out was extended to everyone and surprisingly many of the area motorcycle community did including most of the area clubs sending members to show support and respect to the members of TCB! They had lots food, so breakfast was served to all those who were hungry and there were even a few vendors who chose to brave the weather so they set up inside the Legion. This past summer several of the members of ARM MC (association of recovering motorcyclists) including Bonez & Blair Gardiner, club President recently went to an ARM MC European Picnic in Sweden and some of the pictures they sent back were evidence of the great time with their European brothers and Bonez even hooked up with cousins living there. They rented motorcycles and did some sightseeing and I am sure the trip will be the subject of many discussions over the winter and look forward to it. The Ride for Autism took place in June and Dave and Noella Kuhnle the founders would like to thank all the riders who participated. These included the members of clubs such as BACA Ottawa, the Eyes of Odin MC, Knights of the Inferno MC, Guardians of Children MC, Canadian Veterans MC, CCR, Chrome Divas, Templar Knights MC and the independent riders. This year’s ride raised over $13,000 dollars bringing the total to well over $110,000 since RFA began and all goes towards early identification, diagnosis which could mean a fuller and productive life for children born with autism. TCB, the host club saw to it that everyone was fed breakfast and lunch. The month of July saw the 2nd Annual Teen Challenge Ride & Rodeo! It started in Carleton Place and ended in Renfrew where the Addiction facility is! It was hosted by our good friend Steve Prendergast who is also a councillor and a member of the Bondslaves MC. Many of the areas MC’s came to show their support. Like in many cities and towns across North America there is a rising increase in opioid and alcohol addiction! It touches all families in society which made the participation of Arm MC Ottawa Chapter (Association of Recovering Motorcyclists) even more understandable! I salute this club for all their efforts in not only mentoring others with an addiction problem but in promoting understanding and garnering support from the community at large. Special thanks to TCB for breakfast and all the members of Capital City Bikers Church, who under the guidance of the lovely Nelia and her volunteers provided food for all the riders! And to her husband, Hillbilly and Pastor Rob for donating the use of their rodeo equipment with the events called out by Dave Smith. Talk about community involvement at its best. It was a tough July across the province of Ontario because of record breaking temperatures! Just about every event we attended was affected by the high heat and humidity! It was a true testimony to the respect that the members of BACA MC have earned over the years! On the day of their ride the temperature rose to somewhere near 40°Celcius and about 100 plus riders participated! Special thanks to the old men of TCB because it was either a true testimony to their toughness or their stupidity because those temperatures and hot griddles just don’t seem compatible. The members of the Cap-City Chapter of the Falcons MC held their first Annual Battlefield Run & BBQ! About 60 riders participated including members of the Last Disciples MC, Bondslaves MC, Black Pistons MC, Soldiers for Jesus MC and The Celtic Brotherhood provide a free breakfast to all the participants to show support for the Falcons MC This also was the first official breakfast that TCB has done since the passing of their brother, Bozz! While it went smoothly with brothers Chucky and Hark now taking over The Rider’s Mag - Page 41
the duties of “chef”, it did feel a little bit strange not to see Bozz standing behind the griddle with that giant spatula in his hand cooking breakfast! I thank once again all the Biker Community who came out to his Celebration of Life on the day before his 71st birthday with over 400 people attending! I hope he was looking down from Valhalla smiling at how many came to show support for his wife Adele and his brothers in the club. In early September the annual Fall Swap Meet hosted by Jim Poulin & the Last Disciples MC. It is always well attended because they work very hard at keeping this a true swap meet with lots of parts and accessories on the tables. The Riders Mag is always honored to have a couple of tables at this swap meet. The last event of the year, as far as rides, was the Annual Color Run hosted by the Capital City Bikers Church. It was a success with lots of riders, including a club who came from Montreal. There are a couple of new things to mention to all of you! The first one is condolences to the family and friends of Robert Campbell aka Tugboat, who until recently was a member of the Ottawa Chapter of BACA, (Bikers Against Child Abuse). His was a very familiar face behind the table of their info booth at many shows and events. Bob was a very community minded individual and loved to help others whenever he could! His smiling face and impressive stature will be missed by all those he helped, especially the children when he was an active member of BACA MC. On a more bittersweet occasion, one of the most loved and well known couples in the Ottawa and area motorcycle community, Thor aka Tom Allain and his lovely wife, Nathalie Lacasse decided to sell their home and move out to Vancouver Island where the weather is much more enjoyable in the winter. Tom was an early member of BACA MC when it first started and even after he had to step down because of the demands of his personal life he remained a strong supporter especially with anything that involved children. He hardly ever missed the Annual Ride for Autism Ottawa! In fact I remember him once telling me that he taught the son of one of his neighbors who was autistic how to swim in his outdoor pool and how proud he was to have been part of making that happen. Sadly about 2 years ago they lost their son, Matthias in a tragic accident which reverberated throughout the biker/motorcycle community not only because it was their son but because it reminds us all that our culture puts great store on family, respect and brotherhood! So Nathalie’s and Tom’s pain and loss was felt by all of us. I am happy to report that they are getting settled in to their new surroundings and posting pictures like crazy so that all of their “Biker” family back here can enjoy and stay connected to them. I want to mention that in case you didn’t know, Peri & Tim Poirier of B.A. Machine Performance Cycles are in the middle of making a major addition to their building! You can expect even more to look at when you are there next time. Congratulations on the expansion. Except for looking forward to seeing many of you in person on Dec 7th for the Annual Capital City Bikers Church Xmas Supper, which I hope you get The Rider’s Mag - Page 42
your tickets fast because this truly is a fantastic time and besides myself there are more of us who look like Santa but please remember, I am the Santa in charge of pretty ladies so I have a “Ladies Only” lap! Hope to see many of you at the North American International Motorcycle Supershow Jan 3rd – 5th in Toronto and please if you see me be sure to say hello! One other thing that I want to ask all of the readers and supporters of The Riders Mag, there are over half a million Brain Injury Survivors in the province of Ontario alone! Many of them are bikers but even if they weren’t, they are our family members, our friends, our neighbors and people we work with. They need your support for the “Invisible” Injury! Please contact your local Brain Injury Association and help out whether by donating or in some other way and if you are not sure who to contact then please email me at the address below and I will find out for you, th anks! If you would like more information about it or any of the other events I mention you can go on Facebook and go to “Motorcyco Beau’s Biker Events & Rides In Eastern Ontario” and you can also check out my Facebook group “Motorcyco Beau’s Biker Friendly Businesses in Eastern Ontario” as well. As Always I urge you to support the events and rides that are created by bikers and clubs in your area because unlike slick organizations that run events the local riders and clubs will be the same people that come to support your event. Also please remember to spend your money with businesses such as those that advertise in our Mag or who have proven they are truly Biker-Friendly and have shown their support for our lifestyle and in turn deserve our support and business back. If you have any issue that you think might be of interest to your fellow riders please reach out to me and let me know either by email or on Facebook. If you have an event or ride or you are a business that deals with either motorcycles or the people who ride them you might like to advertize or even perhaps become a distributor of “The Riders Mag” and if so please contact me by email or by phone. As always I want you to please remember that we make our Motorcycle Communities stronger by making them better! email: theridersmag.beau@gmail. com Twitter Riders Mag East @ motorcyco_beau You can also read us online : www. theridersmag.com/online
