Well, if you are reading this, we made it through another year, a little older for sure, wiser or none the worse for wear, time will tell! As for myself, personally, one thing I do know for certain, 2019 was an adventure, and it looks like it is to be continued on into 2020! While some things have been brought under control, (Or as close to being under control as I can get at this time!) others just continue to make my life interesting and a challenge! One thing is certain, there are not enough hours in a day, days in a week, months in a year or years in my lifetime to have a chance to do all the things that I have to do! We won’t even get into the money aspects! I just continue to do the best I can with what I’ve got Godzilla’s (My wife of over 50 years.), condition remains about the same since her stroke last May and is still in the Rehab Hospital, so I am trying to balance time required to look after her and her needs, and life in general, with the everpresent demands of doing the Mag! Thank God for my amazing crew as I would be lost without them! The Beast, in particular, has been phenomenal! We are now entering the very challenging Show season that kicks off with the Supershow, January 3 – 5 at The International Centre out near the Airport! This is always a great experience as there is so much to see and do and so many great people to see! We will once again be in Hall 5 so be sure to stop by our booth and pick up the newest copy of The Mag and say hi! Donny Petersen will be in there with us again this year selling and signing his books and we will have a selection of our own swag on display! I have been trying to get out and about as much as my timetable permits, but as I mentioned earlier my calendar is quite full! Scheduling and attending a seemingly, never-ending, number of funerals and celebrations of life occupies much of my time lately and I do try to get to as many of them as I can, but it is hard to keep up with it all! If you have a loved one who is part of the Motorcycle Community and would like to pay respect or final tribute to them, please let us know and send along a picture and pertinent information that we can run in the GBNF column.

Doctor John – Vagabonds Motorcycle Club I was unable to attend the funeral for Dr. John, due to other commitments but I understand it was well attended! He was a much loved and respected long-time member of the Club and will be missed and remembered by all who knew him. John was a solid, well respected, member of The Vagabonds MC since 1973. A West ender, he was a trusted and loyal friend who loved life, his wife Jue Lai, his family, his Club and his Club Brothers. He also loved getting away on fishing trips and had a passion for motorcycles and he The Rider’s Mag - Page 6

always had a sharp bike and one that he called “Panama Red”. He was a truck driver who worked for CP for a lot of years before switching up to driving a cement mixer and was only a couple of months away from retirement when he passed suddenly on November 15, 2019 at the age of 68. L&R., R.I.P., G.B.N.F.

I also got word that a man who was well known and respected by those in the Biker World simply by the name “Chuckie” lost his long battle with cancer recently! I am still waiting for word on what arrangements are being made for him and will inform you when I hear something. L&R., R.I.P., G.B.N.F.

Pete Edge – Black Diamond Riders M.C. I did get out to the Funeral and celebration of life for Pete Edge of The Black Diamond Riders M.C. and joined with friends, family and Club Brothers to mark the end of life of a man who lived the Motorcycle Lifestyle right up to his final breath! Pete was a well respected and much-loved individual in his own right! There was a huge display of

pictures and memorabilia that paid tribute to a man who lived his life on his terms and stayed true to his beliefs and high standards right to the end! However, Pete was also Right-Hand Man, loyal friend and ally to Johnny Sombrero, President and Supreme Commander of the Black Diamond Riders right up until John’s death some 3 years ago! For decades, together, they provided leadership to the Club and led by example! Fearless, and unbending in their beliefs, true to their code and credo, they cast a giant shadow, forged a solid reputation and a legacy that will live on for many years to come! If there is indeed, a life beyond this one, they are once again riding side by side, raising Hell and looking for the next adventure! Regardless, their names will be forever synonymous with each other and the Black Diamond Riders Motorcycle Club! The three are permanently etched in the memories of Bikers from near and far and in the History of the Ontario Biker Community! Tales of their exploits can be considered Folk Lore or war stories, to be told and retold when bikers gather as their influence back in those days, was significant! Some of these tales may seem a little tall or even be hard to believe for someone whom didn’t live through that life and those times! But the stories are part of the legend and being considered to be part of a legend, if not a legend in his own right is an accomplishment achieved by few! Pete remained in the Club and was considered to be the glue that held it together after John’s passing and remained steadfast in his commitment to the Black Diamond Riders until cancer took its toll and claimed him! His funeral was well attended, with representatives of many different Clubs and individuals joining with family and friends to pay final respects to a man truly deserving of respect! He will be missed! L&R., R.I.P., G.B.N.F.

A woman visited a psychic of some local repute. In a dark and gloomy room, gazing at the Tarot cards laid out before her, the Tarot reader delivered the bad news: "There is no easy way to say this so I'll just be blunt: Prepare yourself to be a widow. Your husband will die a violent death this year." Visibly shaken, the woman stared at the psychic's lined face, then at the single flickering candle, then down at her hands. She took a few deep breaths to compose herself. She simply had to know. But you’re naked!” “Jeff loves me and wants me to wear this dress. It excites him to no end. Every time he sees me in this dress, he instantly becomes romantic and can’t get enough of me!” The mother-in-law leaves, inspired by what she has learned. When the mother-in-law gets home, she undresses, showers, puts on her best perfume, dims the lights, puts on a romantic CD, and lays on the couch, expectantly awaiting her husband. The husband looks up from his whiskey, "Do you remember 20 years ago when we were dating, and you were only 16?" he asks solemnly. "Yes, I do," she replies. "Do you remember when your father caught us in the back seat of my car making love?" "Yes, I remember," says the wife, lowering herself into a chair beside him. The husband continues, "Do you remember when he shoved the shotgun in my faceand said 'Either you marry my daughter, or I'll send you to jail for 20 years?" by Dawn McIlmoyle Sometimes, something happens in life that knocks you down a bit and you need time to recuperate before you get back up and continue the fight. Never surrender, is the name of the game but you can always take your time and not feel bad about it. I have been stuck in a win-lose situation with very little room for compromise because of the issue represented. A victory that feels like a kick in the teeth. The sad fact is I represent many and know I am not the only one that feels the way I do. It is sad that we live in a Society that thinks in such a black and white way, when there are so many grey areas. I prefer to think of myself as a splash of colour in this dark, dull world but this month I didn't feel my usual shiny self. I felt defeated and unheard yet again. Yet I know as dark as it gets, the Dawn always comes, and I know how to pick up the broken pieces quickly and put it all back in place. I like being able to be the Dawn I want to be, whatever day it is. During my deliveries this month I found out that Eagle Eye Custom Cycles is moving, and their new location will be just around the corner at 1150 Champlain Crt. Unit #4, Whitby, Ontario. You can check their website for updates about their move and the upcoming open house and sale at Eagleeyecustoncycles.com I will be sure to attend this opening and get some pictures with the staff. My friend Morley up there in Lindsay at Recycled Gear is going under the knife in early January for I believe hip surgery and will be out of commission for a bit so I want to send him some positive energy to help in his healing process. He will be back to his old self just in time for the season, I know it. Because of the depression, I sort of crashed into I spent more time with loved ones and friends than I did going out to events. I have a feeling this year is going to be very busy for me and things are going to finally be going in my direction. I am optimistic, I just needed time to lie down and breathe figuratively. My youngest Son and his girlfriend brought their puppy to meet Dutchess Von Dee and I. At 14 weeks he was almost as big as her. My older Son and his girlfriend brought the Princess to see me at my house and I got to show her all the costumes I have. We all went out for dinner including my boyfriend who had already met Drake. I had to take a tour downtown Toronto and pick up my headshots and comp cards from the agency that represents me. I am attempting to overcome my fears by facing them head on. Since I was a young girl, I was afraid of public speaking and here I am doing it. and wanting to do more of it. I always thought my dreams were not possible and now after much needed rest and rejuvenation I realize I am finally out of the cocoon and ready to fly. The arm with neurogenic pain doesn't help, but hey, I will be my best version of me along the journey. I got some of my old tattoos fixed up at Inked Impressions and found out my friend Rick Kemp is celebrating his 30th Anniversary in the tattoo world. He is selling tickets for $100.00 for a chance to win a $5000.00 tattoo done by him. There will be many other fun prizes and giveaways. If you are interested you can stop in and see him at 1869 Scugog Street, Port Perry, ON or you can contact me on Facebook at Dawn V McIlmoyle that is a big i and a little l. You can find his work on Instagram at @thedevilsrighthanded. I am including some of the before and after creations Rick has done for me. The Rider’s Mag - Page 12

The one event that I did get out to was a book signing by Donnie Peterson at HarleyG’s. I got to meet the man himself and he signed the book I bought. He told me writing is great if you have something to write about. I already have my book written and about 1000 poems, I just haven’t had the guts to put it all out there. After the hell I have gone through this month I am getting my ass in gear and I am going to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. They say the pen is mightier than the sword and I am going to leave my mark by letting the collateral damage done by those in power be known.

I am really looking forward to spending time at the North American International Motorcycle Show on January 3,4, & 5 2020 at the International Centre in Mississauga. The Toronto Motorcycle Show is February 21-23rd, 2020 at the Enercare Centre in Toronto so be sure to circle that on your calendar. A new year is upon us and a decade has been completed. The last full moon of the decade occurred at 1212 hrs on December 12. That is a whole lot of 12’s and ends of cycles. 2020 will be the beginning of a decade of positive change and the year I finally start to achieve some of my dreams. I bought a dozen brand new custom red and white arrows and I hope to take my archery to a whole new level next Spring. I have long since done away with New Years Resolutions and I have been asleep before Midnight on New Years Eve for at least the last 6 years (I hope this year is different). I do believe in starting the year with goals and then you have the whole year, so you are not setting yourself up for failure right away. My number one goal is to just keep being me and to stop hiding and thinking there is something wrong with me. I am learning the advantage of not caring what others think and I will develop this further in the New Year. I finally have someone in my life that is showing me to stay present, stay in the moment and he loves me for me, not what I can give him like so many others have (even though they deny it). I know that 2020 will bring some downfalls but I have places to go, people to see, events to attend and I plan to make new friends all along the way. My calendar is already filling up with things I want to attend. Another goal I have for 2020 is to get my motorcycle licence again. I had my M2 before but in the chaos of life I let it expire. It will be good to have it. I will have to take the course again because it’s been forever since I was on a bike. In the summer I met a man in Hastings who caught me staring at his Harley and it turned out he was a paramedic. We started chatting and I gave him The Rider’s Mag and he put it in his saddlebag. He told me that if we lived in medieval times, he would have a horse and that his Harley Davidson was his “Iron Horse.” I saw how happy it made him and I hear my girlfriends talk about the freedom it gives and I just want to feel that. One of my all-time favourite songs has always been “Unknown Legend” by Neil Young. It always resonated as I had long blonde hair and I was raising 2 kids. 2020 will be even better than last year because I finally realize I belong, and I have a home even if it isn’t the way I always pictured it. Some words of wisdom for the new year. It is ok to not be ok. Take time to reflect on what really matters, and you are a force to be reckoned with, never ever give up. You may have wished upon the wrong star, but at least you had the courage to wish upon one. The Rider’s Mag - Page 13

What’s new and exciting at Smokies Garage? Lots, comes to mind but seems very inadequate when it comes to this bunch and their accomplishments! Suffice to say, it looks like January 2020 will be the kick-off for a very busy year for Smokie and his fine crew! You can get a taste of what is to come at the Supershow at The International Centre January 3 -5. They are bringing their whole tractor trailer rig that in itself is something to see, but combine that with eight of their custom motorcycles and all the great clothing and other items that they have created that will be sure to thrill those who come to the show! Smokie doesn’t do anything half heartedly so be sure to stop by and see them in Hall 5. They will be happy to discuss builds and other projects and products They will be announcing some of the great things that the motorcycle community can experience over the next 12 Months and provide some insight into what they have planned for the future! They are here to stay and intend to be at the forefront of new innovations and be trendsetters rather than following the pack! Expect the unexpected! I think when they coined the expression; “Lead, follow, or get out of the way.” They had Mike Clark in mind! He knows how to get things done and done right! That is evident in everything he does, be it, in his massive construction projects, or the custom motorcycles, trucks and cars that he and his crew design and build. They will also be promoting an event that they have planned for this summer in Orangeville that I’m sure will attract and delight riders from near and far. After the tremendous success of last year’s events, that were held at the Orangeville Fairgrounds they decided to do it again and in true “Smokies style”, kick it up a notch, or several! These events were extremely well attended and I doubt if anyone left disappointed! The bands were incredible! The food and the beer garden were fantastic! This was a free admission event and proceeds from the beer garden and such, all went to a charity that is near and dear to their hearts, Kidsport Orangeville and District. This is a charity that gets sports equipment into the hands of kids who can’t afford them and to encourage them to participate in organized sports. Mike and his crew are very civic minded and believe in giving back to the community! They have really ramped things up for the 2020 event as it will be run for two days, June 27 and 28. Again at the magnificent Orangeville Fairgrounds! It will be called The Smokeout which will be a Motorcycle and Car show! The motorcycles will be the attraction on Saturday and Sunday will be Custom, Vintage, Antique, cars, trucks and hotrods! Saturday morning, they will have a Show and Shine and if last years entries were an example of what to expect, those who like to see great looking bikes will be thrilled at what will be there this time around! The word is out that there are prizes given out to the best and hottest bikes around and these bikers are a competitive bunch and they don’t like someone else claiming that they have a better-looking bike not without a fight at least! Saturday afternoon there will be bike games that will challenge the riding abilities of those who compete and be The Rider’s Mag - Page 18

great entertainment for those who would rather just watch! There will be two bands playing throughout the day and there will be lots of vendors with a wide variety of items and biker gear for sale! The fine fare from a variety of Food Trucks and the cold beverages served by the delightful crew at the fabulous Beer Garden is sure to keep appetites satisfied and thirsts quenched during your entire stay! They will also have camping available on Saturday night and as well, a bonfire with acoustic entertainment to wind

things down and wrap up the night! More information will be available in the new year. Please visit their website www.smokiesgarage.com. Smokies is thrilled to announce the launch of their Online Store that is chock full of some great new merchandise and is available for purchase with shipping to anywhere in Canada and the United States. New items are being added all the time and there will be a display at the Supershow of all the items! Special focus and attention are being paid to their line of fabulous ladies’ apparel. These are items that can be purchased online after the Show. Because this crew has a such a wide field of interests and because building award winning motorcycles and running first class events isn’t enough to keep them from getting bored. They loaded up and headed down to Florida with the drag bike to see how it would do! Resident bike builder extraordinaire, Crank having past experience racing cars made a smooth transition to go fast motorcycles and did it very well! Expect to see them out at tracks like Grand Bend and others down in the United States with their friends at Shadetree Racing this Summer! They are all very excited about this new adventure! When asked about new builds, either under way or planned you see a look that in as much says “Where do I begin?”. That is because they never know when the next project will start or what it will be, as many of these builds are spontaneous with these guys! If an idea comes to mind that hits the right chord or someone comes in with an idea or a dream that they would like to have become a reality, that can be the start of the next adventure! Right now, bobbers seem to be what is trending and a knucklehead and a shovelhead bobber done Smokies Garage style are in the works! They also like to apply some of that special Smokies Treatment too at Classic old FLH Shovelheads. Be sure to stop by their display in hall 5 at The Supershow! It will be hard to miss! January This astrology has been written in “Quin-trains” meaning there are five lines to the divination. The fifth line will reveal the answer to the other 4 lines. There are 13 twisted spokes in creation of my wheel I use instead of the common 12.

Virgo: Communication always takes two sides and more If you were to last the waves until you reach the shore You’ve opened a can of worms for a reason Hopefully your plans go beyond the season It will take work, so this doesn’t go as before

Since this wheel is created this way, this allows the reader to approach the wheel in 2 ways. As each sign represents a spoke in the wheel, you can read either what your own spoke has to say or read what all the spokes have to say to share a visual to the whole picture. See how all the spokes complete your wheel. The 13th spoke is what I call the “Dath Spoke” It is the spoke that binds all other spokes together, so you can see exactly what wheel(s) you’re using for your ride. Consider it having extra rubber for extra mileage.

Libra: Do not be blind by your focus at hand You need more attention, this is by demand Follow your head or your mind to go ahead Follow your dreams, so get out of bed It’s time now to become your own band

Aries: The one that watches over you expects The advice here is a question of respects Do you owe, or do you cringe? You kind of seem to be on the fringe Take a good look at things as one detects Taurus: There is an old song about turning wheels For you, it’s about digging in your heels Hold on tight because things will stop Then you land, look in your hand, a mop? If you were a fisherman, you'd have reels

Sagittarius: A river of stone can bring great rewards It all depends on what you travel towards A sadness, a gladness and treasure and foe Remember your walk to avoid any woe In the center is what brings the forwards

Gemini: Raise your sword or axe for action now No need to wait anymore, don’t even bow The energy is there, so utilize it well You don’t want the swamp around you to swell Get on your way, hey you, don’t have a cow

Scorpio: Your shield is cracked but strong and worn It’s been this way since you were born Even your sword is still held high It’s good that you’ve always reached for the sky Time to repair what has been torn

Capricorn: It’s unusual to see who and what protects you There must be something important to do What you think may pose a threat May leave you blushing and all wet A surprise alliance that is true Aquarius: Your curiosity today won’t kill the cat You may actually see where things are at Be patient, there’s much more to see You may even count them, one, two, three The whole picture was seen from where you’re at

Cancer: This route may be slower than you’re used to It’s this way in order to get you through The path is not very long, but rather short It’s about leaving and landing in the port When you get across, you feel like new

Pisces: Got a prize, got an idea, got something cool Whatever you do, do not act as a fool Be amongst thy self in hand You are now in command As it shows, you may be the new tool

Chuckie

1944 - 2019 Olav Olsen, a good Viking name aka Chuckie… was a Toronto OG. He is pictured with his long time old lady Jennifer. Chuckie was recently forced into riding a trike, which shows his nature of never giving up. For those that remember Toronto’s rough and tough tenderloin, now replaced by genteel communities, Chuckie fought hard for his "corner”. He had street meat respect. He was good to his women; he ran them, he protected them and he helped them. Olav was a former member of the Executioners MC and later, the Chosen Few MC. Chuckie was solid, which is as good as compliment one gets on the streets. He was a good guy. L&R., R.I.P., G.B.N.F

John "Doc" Marciniak Vagabonds Motorcycle Club John, a well respected and loved member of The Vagabonds MC since 1973 passed away suddenly, at the age of 68. A truck driver, with an immense love of life and filled his spare time fishing and enjoying his passion for motorcycles, his Club and his Club Brothers! He loved his wife Jue Lai and his family and had a full and happy life! He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. L&R., R.I.P., G.B.N.F

Carburetor and Fuel Injection Physics: The Tomato Can Carburetor Harley lore has it that William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson made a prototype fuel delivery system from a Campbell’s soup can with a hole in it. Known as the Tomato Can Carburetor, this primitive first attempt was made in the fledgling firm’s primitive factory, a 10- by 15-foot wooden shed in the Davidsons’ backyard. Carburetor’s unlike EFI (electronic fuel injection) depend wholly on the laws of physics. A fuel tank must be above the carburetor for gravity feed of the gas. The EFI fuel tank stays above the fuel delivery system, probably out of tradition and building convenience but it could locate below the unit because gas is pumped. Thus EFI has the capacity to defy the principle of gravity. Moreover, gas is drawn into a carburetor throat and further into the combustion chambers by the principle of vacuum. Vacuum is caused by the descending pistons. Vacuum may be defined as less or negative pressure relative to surrounding atmospheric pressure. Vacuum may further result from a venturi design basing on Bernoulli’s Principle assisted by rapidly descending pistons or by higher rpm scavenging also known as the physics Principle of Momentum. The venturi is part of the carburetor throat. The throat is the opening through the centre of a carburetor. Bernoulli’s (Physics) Principle comes into play here. Mechanics may call Bernoulli’s Principle the Venturi Effect as a descriptive way to get away from the guy’s name that first recognized this universal physical law. A venturi is a restriction or more correctly, a narrowing formed in the carburetor throat that causes an increase in the velocity of air. Think of a wide lazy river as it narrows. The water must speed up in order to pass the same volume through the narrowing in the same amount of time. The weight of the water behind forces the increase in speed…ditto for air in a venturi. If I describe this in another way, the increase in air/fuel velocity through a venturi also causes a vacuum increase (decrease in pressure), as the air passes through. This pressure difference draws gas through small holes (jetting) from the connecting float reservoir and into the venturi air stream. If looking at the slow moving air (low vacuum), on out side of the carburetor throat, it speeds up as the same volume must get through the narrower venturi in the same period of time thus creating high vacuum or suction, which draws in the gas. The liquid gas droplets begin to atomize as it draws into the fast moving air flow. After passing through the venturi, the air enters the manifold and into the intake port to be drawn into the combustion chamber via another vacuum created by descending pistons. Engine valve overlap creates a different origin vacuum at higher rpms that forcefully draws the fuel mixture into the combustion chamber via the physics principle of Momentum also known by the mechanical term scavenging. This process can be defined as mass in motion. Mass is commonly measured by how much something weighs. All objects like gas and air have mass; so if air and gas are moving, then it has momentum or a strength of force. The amount of momentum that air and gas has is dependent upon two variables: how much air and gas is moving and how fast they are moving. In a simple world, an engine valve like the intake will close before the opposing exhaust valve opens and vice versa. In the real world, both valves are open together for a short period of time as one opens while the other is closing. This is called valve overlap. Now, when an engine is rotating at lower revolutions per minute, too much valve overlap will screw things up because fresh intake air will mix with the burned exhaust gases. However, at higher rpms, the momentum of fast moving, exiting exhaust gases out the exhaust valve will act like a Hoover vacuum and suck in the fresh charge of intake fuel for both carburetor and EFI. EFI does not need the vacuum for the purpose of introducing gas as it electronically times and measures the forced squirting (injection) of gas through strategically placed injectors into the combustion chambers. However, EFI uses vacuum to provide air so the gas can burn. Yet, both carburetor and EFI must obey the laws of venting. Air must replace gas leaving the fuel tank or else the created vacuum will stop gas flow into the carburetor in its tracks and thwart EFI function. Atmospheric pressure plays mightily into carburetor operation. This is the weight of all the air above creating pressure on the air at the earth’s surface. Atmospheric pressure varies by factors like temperature. The hotter the air, the less dense it becomes as the air expands and vice versa. This means there is less oxygen in warmer air by volume to burn the gas than in cooler air by the same volume. Back to 1902, William and Arthur had a huge problem, one of many problems in developing their iconic motorcycle. In the beginning, basic gasoline lacked necessary additives like Octane. Although discovered in 1859 with the drilling of the first oil well, Octane was not harnessed for use in gasoline until after 1921 with the utilization of a lead additive. Today, we use safer environmental Octanes rather than the harmful and very dirty lead. In the first years, Harley and Davidson or Ford for that matter could not control the burning of the gas. Igniting gas did not burn so much as it exploded. Sometimes, gas exploded in the combustion chambers at the correct time to inefficiently create power but other times, haphazard explosions worked against the engine. There are two major problems with this. Spontaneous The Rider’s Mag - Page 26

combustion (detonation, preignition, knock, pinging) or explosions are known mechanically as the great engine destroyers. These are unplanned combustion events. Combustion must be timed with piston position to create optimal engine power. Secondly, the gas needs to burn at a controlled rate to effectively time the power creating event. The key is controlled burn as opposed to explosion. The many Octanes now available stop or limit spontaneous combustion explosions. Octanes cause a measurable controlled burn that can be timed for engine power and efficiency. Once Octane was harnessed as an additive in gasoline, engineers could concentrate on the development of carburetors. Original production carburetors like the the Schebler (1924-1933), Beck (1930-1936) the famed Linkert (1930 to early-1966 Big Twin), the rare DC Linkert (1966 Big Twin; 1957-1965 XL), the much-maligned Tillotson (19671971), Bendix (1972-1975), and the Keihin (1976-1988) not to be confused with its successor and the last carburetor in use on a Harley-Davidson. Some aftermarket offerings today like the S&S Super carburetors operate with a butterfly valve in their throat to control vacuum, thus air and fuel intake. Fuel and air cannot be induced to enter the combustion chambers without vacuum and gas cannot burn to create energy without the right proportion of air. Too much gas relative to air (rich) will cause a loss of power and high fuel consumption. Too much air relative to gas will also cause power loss and extreme engine destroying heat. In the scheme of fuel delivery efficiency, butterfly type carburetors are well … inefficient, when compared to other types of carburetion as well as EFI. The second type of carburetor, which is not in use on a Harley except in the aftermarket, is a slide control. The throttle cable activates the slide. The older Mikuni’s are a good example of this. The third and best type is vacuum controlled carburetors like the circa-1989 to 2006 CV (constant velocity) Keihin that use both a slide and a butterfly to control air flow through the venturi. However, the throttle cable does not attach to the slide but to the butterfly. Our old pal, vacuum acting on a piston and diaphragm operates the slide on the CV Keihin. The difference with the CV carburetor is the vacuum piston controlling the opening size of the venturi. This is a precision air and gas delivery mechanism dictated by physics (vacuum). This is the reason that the CV Keihin is the best stock carburetor ever used on a Harley Davidson. In fact, it rivals the best of the aftermarket offerings, the Mikuni Smoothbore. Next issue, I will discuss the best Harley carburetor and how it works. Donny Petersen www.donnypetersen.com Learn the real deal… Wanna know what really happened from the one who was there? Good morning friends, or whatever time of the day it is in your world. I’m glad to see you all made it another year and another decade! Welcome to 2020 let’s make it one hell of a ride shall we?! Speaking of rides, I believe I was about to take one up the Pacific Coast Highway when I left you last month.

The PCH is 655 miles long running up the California coast from Interstate 5 south of San Juan Capistrano to U.S. 101 in Leggett. I managed over 400 miles of this splendid byway from Pismo Beach north. The coast is lined with giant rock bluff overlooks and more curves than you can fathom. I sat in more than one spot watching the waves crash into the shoreline and admiring the rock formations as they surfaced and submerged.

The Rider’s Mag - Page 28

Along this route, there are giant redwood trees and Douglas Fur forests as well as huge bridges and numerous rolling hills. Fast or slow, this is a spectacular road for two wheels. One of the iconic American bridges along the way is the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. I arrived at the bridge just before sunset and googled myself up a hotel for the night downtown.

I was up with the sun the next morning eager to explore the city and a few of its famous places. First stop, Lombard St. a one block long brick street snaking its way down a very vertical hill. Then, I rolled on to find the harbor and cable car junction where the Buena Vista Cafe is located. I was informed that San Francisco is the best place to find an Irish Coffee and a bread bowl of clam chowder. This cafe had both and I discovered it was actually the first place in the U.S. to serve an Irish Coffee and now sells 30% of the world’s Tullamore Dew whiskey. After making several friends and enjoying one too many coffees, I took a short tour of the town. There are several views of the infamous Alcatraz prison island and the bridge. What I was not expecting was the giant Pet Cemetery I stumbled upon on a side street. This place had hundreds of graves and was still used by locals for all of their pet burying needs. I must say, I did have an eerie feeling as I stood there reading the headstones thinking about that old Stephen King movie.

I made it up onto the Golden Gate Bridge and thoroughly enjoyed my long traffic-filled commute across the bay. Next, I found myself surrounded by construction and unable to make it to the viewpoint of the city I had picked out on the map. So, I detoured around and back out to the coast to enjoy another tank of gas worth of seaside scenery. The temperatures dropped rather quickly as the day rolled on and I was happy to find a room for the night in Fort Bragg. This town is home to the natural phenomenon, Glass Beach. Here, the tides turn just the right way and somehow all of the ocean glass washes ashore in one area. I discovered millions of fragments of weathered and rounded glass shards filling the shoreline in place of sand. Incredible! From Fort Bragg, it was a short winding ride through giant tree forests and a few small seaside communities. I soon reached Highway 101 and found the, “Never Don’t Stop” roadside cafe and gift shop. This was an interesting outdoor dining area/ The Rider’s Mag - Page 29

brewery/souvenir place that had a stage for live music. Excellent food and service. Before I knew it, I was crossing yet another state line into Oregon. Grants Pass would be home for the night and the next day would bring a visit to a long lost friend. I’ll tell you all how that day went next month! Happy trails kids talk soon!.... Oh and if you are at all interested, I published another Ebook on Amazon last month. “Sometimes I Ramble, Sometimes I Ride.” Stop by and check it out in paperback or kindle form, Thanks in advance!

Whether you’re reading this before or after January 1st 2020, I want to thank all of you who read and support the Mag and helping us to become one of the most popular Biker publications, both in print and online. While riding season has come to an end we now turn our attention to all the motorcycle shows and swap meets that take place all over Ontario helping bikers to survive until spring returns. I remember back over 40 yrs ago when Toronto got its first motorcycle show. People came from all over Ontario, some traveling hundreds of miles just to break up the winter blues and to be around other riders. In the years since then, things have changed considerably because bikers started to take things into their own hands and these days many motorcycle clubs are active in seasonal charities, helping groups like the homeless, children or animals. Over the month of December, we get invited to many Xmas parties, including the annual Capital City Bikers Church Christmas Banquet, which is an awesome time. Just imagine celebrating the true Spirit of the Season and sharing it not only with your friends, but over 300 plus members of the Ottawa and area motorcycle community. The banquet comes with roast turkey with all the fixings, including homemade blueberry or cherry cheesecake. On behalf of all the Clubs and independent riders, who had a wonderful time, I extend thanks to all the hard work and effort of Pastor Rob McKee, Hillbilly and his wife the lovely Nelia. They, along with the church volunteers, members and supporters of the CCBC saw to it we all had a great evening. The church graciously reserved tables for some of the clubs such as BACA MC (Bikers Against Child Abuse), ARM MC (Association of Recovering Motorcyclists), Ruffians MC, Last Disciples MC and The Celtic Brotherhood. There is something pretty powerful about looking out onto the floor and seeing so many different patches and bikers all together enjoying each other’s company laughing and going from table to table to wish each other Merry Xmas. Be sure and put the CCBC Annual Xmas Banquet on your calendar for next year and be reminded of the true spirit of Xmas and brotherhood.

This is a short article but I want to mention a couple things taking place in 2020. The 2nd Annual Mega Swap Meet, hosted by the Bondslaves MC will still be taking place on April 25th but it is moving to the Earl Armstrong Arena on Olgilvie Rd. It is a larger venue and will once again feature music by Great Scott, an AC/DC cover band as well as a Led Zeppelin cover band, and like last year, lots of vendors. Another event that I am sure will make a lot of people very happy is the return of the Capital City Bikers Church Swap Meet on May 2nd This event, which started back in 2003, took a break for a couple of years. They will be adding a few new items to the event with the addition of a used bikes for sale corral, their food court and three bands to entertain the crowd. I look forward to seeing all of you at both events so please be sure and stop by The Riders Mag booth and say Hi! Speaking of saying Hi, if you are attending the 44th Annual North American Motorcycle Supershow in Toronto January 3rd to the 5th, please be sure to stop by The Riders Mag booth and pick up a hard copy of the Mag! Not only will it be the best $2.00 you have spent but you are supporting the best biker mag in Canada and a few other places too. One other thing that I want all of my readers and supporters of The Riders Mag to know is, that there is over a half a million brain injury survivors in the province of Ontario alone and many of them are bikers but even if they weren’t, they are our family members, our friends, our neighbors and people we work with who need our support for they are dealing with the “Invisible Injury” so please contact your local brain injury association to see about helping them out whether by donating money or even better as a volunteer. If you are not sure who to contact then please email me at my address below and I will find out for you. If you would like any more information about events or rides that I mention in my column you can go on Facebook and go to “Motorcyco Beau’s Biker Events & Ride in Eastern Ontario and as always I urge you to support the events and rides that are created by bikers and clubs in your area because unlike slick organizations that run events, the local riders and clubs will be the same people that will come and support yours. Please remember to spend your money with businesses such as those who advertise in The Riders Mag because they have proven themselves to be Biker Friendly and shown their support for our lifestyle so in turn they deserve our support and business back. If you have any issues that you think might be of interest to your fellow readers please reach out to me and let me know either by email or Facebook. If you have an event or ride or you are a business that deals with either motorcycles or the people who ride them you might like to advertize or even perhaps become a distributor of The Riders Mag, please contact me by email or phone. As always I want you please remember that we make our Motorcycle Communities stronger by making them better. email: theridersmag.beau@gmail. com Twitter..
