Welcome to The Rider’s Mag You may have no ced some subtle changes to The Mag over the past year and a bit. We have tried to change things up a bit in an effort to get be er coverage of all areas of this Province. I’ve added new writers and contributors to give the Mag more depth and expanded to take in more of what our lifestyle is about and give our readers more content. Flat track Racing will be Aaron who will be doing a column on Flat track racing in Ontario. We will also have input from another of our writers who is a huge fan of the sport and is a regular a endee at many tracks. Drag Racing – I have been discussing the idea of including a column about Drag Racing with one of the Top Drag Racers in The Province. So that is in the works as well. We have tried to get local representa on for all areas of The Province so that business’s, events, and riders from that area coverage by someone who they can iden fy with and who in turn, iden fies with them and local issues that may escape someone from outside the area. To that effort we have added Steve Force to our crew to cover the London and surrounding areas. Steve is a well-known and well respected rider from that area and has been around the Biker Scene for decades. There are s ll some other parts of the Province that do not yet have that coverage, like Northern Ontario but I’m working on it. Things are shaping up to be a very busy month and an extremely busy riding season. We can only hope for decent weather as more and more events get added and more demands are made on me which is already in short supply.

Fighting for Your Back in March, the Ontario Confedera on of Clubs held its Third Annual Conference in London, Ontario. The event is held every year to gather delegates from all over the province to discuss rights issues relevant to the biker lifestyle. This year the conference was hosted by the Phantom Thunder M.C. who did an extremely first-rate job of organizing the event. The facility with complete full services, were professionally provided by the Best Western Stoneridge Inn & Conference Center in London, Ontario. The hotel promised comfort, an adequate space to conduct the seminars, a full service restaurant for breakfast and lunch, and a delicious banquet for all to enjoy. Everything was provided as promised so if you’re ever in London and require biker-friendly accommoda ons then you need to check them out. The weekend was enjoyed by over 70 delegates who spent all of Saturday listening to speakers who covered various topics regarding legal reali es, political reali es, and proposals to assist with changing those reali es to further the interests of the OCC and p a r t i c u l a r l y, the bikers of

Rights

Ontario. The seminars were opened by Steve (Lightning) Force, VP Phantom Thunder M.C. who introduced Chris Surowiak from CMS Legal Services who spoke at length about courtroom reali es and the jus ce??? machine and how it works. And you thought I was Scary, Eh Ollie? The next speaker was Mike Lepine from North Wall Riders who spoke briefly about the government’s decision to close several Veterans Affairs offices and force many vets to seek assistance at Service Canada offices where they would be forced to interact with non-veterans who will not have the experience to relate to the special services that our vets so richly deserve. Mmmmmm, it appears that Fan!no is now applying the same tac!cs to deal with veterans as he u!lized with the Downtown Hells Angels, Eh Ollie? Next up was Bob Purcell, the head of the OCC Poli cal Ac on Commi$ee who spoke about the OCC mandate and the strategies of successfully furthering the OCC agenda. Bob introduced three poli cians . . . first was his boss, the Mayor of Du$on/ Dunwich, Cameron McWilliam who was followed by the Warden of Elgin County, Dave Marr, both of whom underlined the fact that bikers are important to tourism in all regions and further extended their support for the bikers in Ontario. He was followed by the Conserva ve MPP for Elgin-Middlesex, Jeff Yurek , who spoke at length about issues vital to the OCC

Established in 1996 to Champion Biker’s Rights in Ontario Organized to provide a forum for communication amongst bikers and to offset discriminatory practices against bikers, particularly motorcycle clubs, by both media and law enforcement agencies which have conspired to inflate the truth regarding bikers and motorcycle clubs. The OCC focuses its attention on biker-related issues such as handlebar height as it pertains to safety, motorcycle insurance costs, and lobbying government representatives regarding issues that affect every biker and not just clubbers. Currently, the OCC represents over 40 independent members and over 70 clubs, which include both motorcycle clubs and riding clubs who collectively represent individual membership of over 4000 motorcycle riders. Interested parties should visit www.occ4u.org. Independent membership is affordable at $25.00 per year with every dollar utilized in preventing the erosion of bikers’ rights in Ontario. For the past five years, the Ontario Confederation of Clubs has been actively lobbying the current Liberal Government to allow single rider access to the 400 series highways High Occupancy Vehicle lanes. Interested parties are invited to sign our online petition via http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/OCC/?e .

THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 8

Fighting for Your such as the need for single-rider access to the 400 series highways High Occupancy Vehicle lanes. Also discussed was a commitment to make that happen should the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party form the next provincial government. Later in the a"ernoon was a how-to seminar presented by Ken MacDonald on advancing your bikerrelated concerns to the various government representa ves. Following that was a seminar/discussion by Larry Pooler, OCC Vice Chairman, who highlighted the voter numbers represented by the OCC membership and how this can be u lized as a lobbying tool in the upcoming government elec ons. The 2014 conference was also a social gathering of the clans. Delegates representing over 30 O n t a r i o clubs schmoozed for two days renewing old acquaintances and makin’ new contacts. Many thoughts and ideas were exchanged – which is how change eventually becomes policy and that is the core reason for holding this important annual event. A very special ‘slap on the patch’ to the Phantom Thunder M.C. for hos ng a very well organized and enjoyable 2014 OCC Conference. This month’s OCC feature club is the Outlaws M.C. which has been established in Ontario since 1977. The club is currently expanding with several chapters in Ontario and many more across Canada. Outlaw members proclaim that “Brotherhood and Motorcycles is the strength of our club”. The club also emphasizes that they are a brotherhood and not a criminal organiza on despite media claims that any club wearing a 1% patch is dedicated to the criminal life. The Outlaws M.C. states on its website that “the 1% defini on, as we see it, explains our commitment to biking and brotherhood”. Interested par es are invited to visit h&p://www.outlawsmc-canada.com/ I spent a quality two days at the Na onal Motorcycle Show where my observa ons morphed into understandings. It is apparent that the Internet and television is slowly altering our lifestyle. One observa on is that there are far less used parts sellers taking space. A"er talking to many old swap meet veterans, the consensus is that most of the used motorcycle parts business is being conducted via the various websites which are far from ideal as you are never sure that the photograph truly represents the actual part being offered - which is of paramount importance when you’re purchasing

used parts. My other observa on is that many par cipants in our lifestyle are not well informed about the issues facing bikers in the 21st century which has underlined one glaring conclusion – that the Ontario Confedera on of Clubs is all the more vital to the lifestyle. It will fall to organiza ons like the OCC to combat the ever-changing global a tudes towards bikers and our lifestyle. You, yea you . . . can lend a hand by joining the OCC as an independent member. The cost is affordable at $25.00 per year with every dollar going towards stopping the erosion of bikers’ rights in Ontario. Cruising With Critter Life can be wonderful and life can be a heartbreaker, but life is life and all that goes with it. It can be joyful and it can be sad and you never know what card you will turn up next, but when you do you deal with it. It is what it is: I need to start off with my shock and dismay upon hearing about the sudden an un mely death of Mario Lio ne AKA “Fat Mario” a er the Spring Motorcycle Show just past. Mario was an extremely well loved and respected member of not only the Biker Community but touched the lives and the hearts of many in all walks of life and will be sorely missed by all that knew him. He was an easy going guy who loved life and lived it well and it would be hard to find someone with anything bad to say about him. I was unable to make it down to the funeral I was told that there was an enormous turn out to pay respects and send him off in a style that he was worthy of and deserved. RIP Fat Mario……GBNF! I understand that anyone needing a tow truck that day would have been SOL as they were all at Mario’s funeral. I’m glad I had spo"ed him that a ernoon at the Show and went over and said Hi and shook his hand. Who knew it would be the last me. I offer my deepest condolences to Adriana, his wife of 17 years, Brothers, friends and family. RIP Fat Mario……GBNF! On another sad note; I got word that a long- me friend of mine and many others in the Motorcycle Community, especially in the London area, Rick Bigg AKA “Smiley” or “Mr. Bigg” has been diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus and has been given mere Months to live. Rick, now 57 years old, who has been dealing with Parkinson’s disease for the past eight years recently went to the Dr. complaining of chest pains and difficulty swallowing and was told he had a tumour the size of an orange in his throat. The cancer has now spread

to his spine and threatens to paralyze him before he dies. He is hoping to gather enough strength to get out for one last ride on his motorcycle before that happens. This happens while his wife Laurie is s ll recovering from a kidney transplant, while s ll working and taking care of Rick. As you can imagine this is a stressful me for the couple and the family as Laurie would like to spend as much me as she can with Rick in the me that he has le and would like to take a leave of absence from work to accomplish this but the financial impact of that would be overwhelming at this me. Rick’s Sister, Alison Futon, has set up a page on the website gofundme.com to raise money to make this possible. If you are interested in helping you can check out the fundraising campaign for Rick Bigg and his family. Hang in there Rick and Laurie! Sorry for your troubles! Well my knee is coming along nicely, as I go through the whole therapy program at Southlake Hospital here in Newmarket under the guidance and watchful eyes of Laurie and Mark who put me through the paces and various devices and exercises that they promise will have me doing be"er than I have for years. Advice that I received from absolutely everybody who has had this procedure done or knew someone who had it done was “Do what they tell you to do!!” So that is what I’m doing and it appears to be working. If you were at the Na onal Motorcycle and Ta"oo Show this past weekend you will know that the Riders Mag Trike is a reality, although not completely finished, we got her as close as possible and took her along to show her off a bit. We s ll have a bit more to do to her like exhaust, lights, wiring and the like and we haven’t yet taken her on a test run yet as we quite literally were s ll bol ng stuff on as we were loading her on the trailer and cleaned her up as best we could at the Show. I was quite proud of her and all the work that went into her by so many to date. She got a lot of a"en on from folks at the Show and I know that pictures of her have appeared on Twi"er and Facebook. I can hardly wait to get her on the road! At one point during the Show, Sherri O’Irish had asked me to pose with her and I climbed into the seat and long a er

Cruising With Critter the picture was taken I was having trouble finding a reason to get off. I could picture a warm summer day and ea ng up the miles on her. I will write more on her and that show next issue. It looks like it’s going to be a busy summer, whenever Mother Nature finally decides to quit fucking around and let’s Summer happen! I managed to luck out again and squeezed in another photo shoot for the Calendar feature when Winter gave us a brief reprieve (Or Mother Nature was just teasing us.) and released us from its icy grip for a couple of days. Again this Month I was scrambling to get this done in me. Trying to schedule things with Choppers Custom Works who agreed to do the feature but between shi y weather, followed by more shi y weather, physiotherapy sessions, Dr.’s appointments and seemingly, 3 million other things that I was trying to juggle it gets to be a challenge at mes. I am indeed lucky to have so many friends who have amazing looking daughters and don’t mind loaning them to me on occasions like this. Actually I have known this Month’s model Ashley, for many years now and knew that she has done modeling and we had even spoken of doing a shoot just recently but I s ll ran it past her Mom and Dad, Steve and Louise first. My problem was that once again I was going to have to get this shoot done during the week. Weekends are not usually a problem but weekdays………people do have jobs. Luckily Ashley was available so I was good to go. So I gathered up my cameras loaded them in “Black Bitch 2” picked up Ashley and headed to beau ful downtown Selkirk to where Choppers Custom Works has a fantas c Store right on Main St. It was s ll a tad cool but that didn’t even seem to faze the Amazing Ashley as she donned various ou its (None of which could be deemed as cold weather wear.) and proved herself to be a real trooper and of sturdy Canadian stock as she posed on the huge selec on of motorcycles that Tom and company had got out for us and managed to look as if it was a warm Summer day. Mother Nature must have been in a decent mood for a change as she actually allowed the sun to come out strong and it warmed things up a bit more for us. Tom along with his brother Mike and Son, Joe were really helpful moving bikes around and se ng things up for us. Then they brought out the “Choppers Custom Works Lawn Mower”, an absolutely amazing contrap on that was the brain child of Mike and his Son in Law Aaron and they really do cut the grass with it! It has been a definite hit with everyone that sees it and I just had to get Ashley to pose on it as well. I really love doing these shoots as I get to really get some insight into the shops and the personali es behind them and they become more than a voice on the phone or just an adver ser. All the shops that I’ve visited have been incredible and Tom and company were no excep on. They are warm, personable and a pleasure to deal with on the phone.

The friendly, informal nature of the shop prompts unscheduled visits from customer’s friends and neighbours who were just in the area and wanted to say hi and passersby from all seemed happy to say hi! It was great to talk to their customers and get a sense of how strong a rela onship has been developed. Guys like Wayne whose bike appears on the Calendar this month who speaks so highly of Tom, his Family and his crew and the painstaking efforts they put in to make his tribute to his Dad happen. I could easily have spent more me with them but they had work to do and I had to get back to the office, so we said our goodbyes and headed for home.

Cruising With Critter It was a great me and a great day! Jacox Harley Davidson – Ladies Garage Night I swung by Jacox H-D at their great store on Argen a Dr. in Mississauga as they have shown an interest in us lately and even ran some of their events in our What’s Shakin pages and I invaded their Ladies Garage Night as I was in the area and had no Ladies available to do the job. The parking lot was packed with cars and trucks and there were even several motorcycles out front their brave owners challenging the fickle quirks of Mother Nature. I grabbed my camera and wandered into the very busy showroom and was immediately approached by a very nice

THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 12

lady enquiring if I was looking for someone. This I took as code for; “It’s Ladies Night” dummy! What are you doing here?”. I wanted to avoid the embarrassment of being escorted off the property by a couple of large, muscular women who I were sure were lurking in the shadows to repel such male invasions into female territory should it occur and quickly explained who I was and was and what I was doing there and she smiled sweetly and I was then directed and introduced to Julie Mar n, a stunning young lady to whom I had spoken to many mes on the phone. It was nice to put a face to a name and voice. She in turn introduced me to Keely Jacox and then her father Pat who needed no introduc on as I had met him many mes before and even bought Petoonia from him back in 1995 when his store was down on Queensway Ave. in Toronto. I again, said I was just there to get a few pictures and declined their kind offers of refreshment and Julie con nued on with her tour through the store leading me to the back shop where they were doing demo’s and such and along the way we came across co-owner Klaus Zabel who Julie introduced me to as well. I had not met him before but he recognized my name and said that he reads the Mag and my columns. I’m not sure if that’s good or bad but he was smiling, so I’m going with good! We talked a bit before moving into the shop area where I ran into several familiar faces among the large gathering of ladies along the way. I spo ed an old friend, Keith Marshall, busy with customers and when he was freed up came over to say hello. Not wan ng to further intrude on a night dedicated to Lady Riders and having got many good pictures, I considered it to be a mission accomplished then stealth fully working my way out through the back door to my truck and headed for home. Thanks for the hospitality!

Spring Motorcycle Show 2014 Wow! This weather is anything but Spring- like, but it is The Official Spring Motorcycle Show so a er this Winter from Hell that just refuses to fuck off and die, I will take part in any, “Spring” ac vity, event, ritual or ceremony that represents, promises or even hints of warmth, sunshine that is usually associated with the word, and gets my mind off the abysmal weather. However, whatever the weather, be it, warm or cold, sleet, snow, shit, Hell or High water, we are going because it is “THE SPRING MOTORCYCLE SHOW” damn it! Spring! Spring! Hey Mother Nature you ornery old hag! I’m talking to you! I shouldn’t have to explain Spring to you! Did you not get my requests for nice warm weather? Do you not have a fucking calendar? Get with the program! I think just about everyone is sick to death of this crap and anxious to get on with warm weather and get the bikes on the road and a Show like this is well med and well needed if only to get together with others who share the same sen ments and collec vely bitch while you buy the stuff you will need for the rumoured 2014 Riding Season riding season that could start any me now. You hear that Mother Nature? Any me now!! It was a busy spot as people snapped up deals from the hundreds of vendors assembled in the massive halls of the show. There was a large selec on of used bikes for sale as well. I was doing the Show on crutches again this year having just go en my new knee installed

so was not moving really fast but I was moving and enjoying myself. Al and I along with our buddy and Eastern distribu on dude, Larry, had been here Friday and did the set-up for the booth so when Peppermint Pa y, Big Sco and I rolled in a er our tradi onal pre-show Breakfast at The Airport grill we could go right to work. We were joined later by crowd favourite, Senior and his bodyguard/wheelman Bad Bob (who has become an essen al member of the Riders Mag crew) and then later that a ernoon we were honoured with an invasion from the Far East (Ontario that is.) when Bombas c Beau and his crew resplendent in Cel c Green came on the scene. Beau who writes a fine column in the Mag each month and represents The Mag throughout eastern Ontario and reaches into Quebec, and this fine bunch of extremely enthusias c and energe c gentleman who have earned the nickname the “Paper Boyz” were an absolute hit at the recent and highly successful O!awa Motorcycle Show and were an absolute treat

Spring Motorcycle Show 2014 to have in the booth today. Their good natured charm and personali es is infec ous and creates a real nice vibe. I was able to wander around the show a lot which is great for me as there are so many people that I get to visit that when stuck in the booth I don’t get to see. I wandered over to talk to ever smiling; Daniel at ResurreXion Cycle’s great looking booth. They take a lot of pride in their display and have many great items for sale their everpresent li!le mascot or whatever he is always catches my a!en on and makes their booth instantly recognizable. They are a pleasure to deal with and have some great deals. Terez Leathers was set up with her usual great selec on of leather goods and other accessories and apparel and as usual, was doing the ever popular Leather fashion shows that are always a huge hit at the Shows. She is always super professional and never a disappointment and puts a lot of thought and effort into keeping the shows fresh with stunning new crea ons and a great selec on of models, male, female, and children to showcase her talent of crea ons that suit and fit the en re family and produces items that are not just a!rac ve but

func onal and last a life- me. I have items in my beer box that came from her store that have endured the test of me and the harsh treatment that I give my gear. I just wandered around taking my me (Traveling with crutches doesn’t allow for speed as I haven’t figured out how to shi$ them into high gear.) allowing for a couple well- med and well planned stops at the beer garden to visit my buddy the bar tender who has become a regular at these shows and his sense of humour and charming nature takes the s ng out of the prices of the drinks. I know that you are not confined to the actual beer garden at these shows anymore but I needed to plunk my red old ass down for a while and a stop at the beer garden usually results in running into people I know so a rest period can be converted to a gab fest in short order.

Spring Motorcycle Show 2014 I eventually got back on duty and found Tony from CJ Cycle in Bolton and his crew large and in charge at the corner spot that he has occupied at this show for years now and as usual he had some incredible deals on an amazing display of new and used parts and accessories. I made several a empts to talk to John Cosen!ni from Motorcycle Enhancements and his best friend Panda had a great looking display where he was promo!ng, not his fine shop, but his favourite charity Ride to Reach but every !me I passed by he was busy talking to customers so I pe ed Panda and kept on moving. I checked out Black Gold’s booth or should I say booths as Gord has taken up a great deal of real estate once again to display his fine lines or knives, leather goods, fashion accessories, t shirts and so much more. He would likely bring more stuff but it would take bigger trucks and take too long to pack and unpack. Do yourselves a favour and stop in at his store up in Newmarket. Oh yeah and he carries The Riders Mag shirts at his store as well. The Lovely Trish from Brass Pole was set up alongside Gord’s booth with her ever expanding line of clothing and

Tim from Triple K Upholstery was there along with the lovely Tina but his booth seemed to be a major a rac!on and always had a crowd in front of it so we had to se le for a wave instead of a handshake. There were so many different rides, clubs, chari!es represented at the show, all vying for a li le of the !me and support of Riders for who, that !me that is in very short supply being limited and determined largely by a far too short riding season making !me very valuable commodity. There are just so many hours in a day and just so many riding days and so many groups, all with very worthy causes and it is a tough sell. Sweet li le Jenn, all pre y in purple, who does

Spring Motorcycle Show 2014 ly on their own as event is also a$ended by a significant number of members from The Brothers of the Wheel, Motorcycle Club along with their friends, family and supporters who travel up from The United States to par!cipate and support in this annual event. There are approximately 200 people involved in making it happen. They then recognized the need for the same support in for what was, for many members, their own back yard, in Southern Ontario and in 2001 held the first Daybreak Barbecue using the same basic format as the Manitoulin Penny Run but condensed into a one day event, became an instant hit with not just the groups from Northern Ontario but an addi!onal eight group homes from Richmond Hill and two more group homes from London, Ont., with approximately 160 people a$ending. This will be the thirteenth year that these men and women along with their family friends and supporters have given their !me and efforts to bring a much needed relief and release from the challenges of their day to day lives and fill their hearts with joy. The Brothers of the Blade are currently looking at expanding their efforts to include a similar event in the Bracebridge area as well.

It doesn’t just stop at pu ng on these much adored and appreciated events but through the results of their fundraising efforts from approximately four events held each year have been able to donate approximately $350,000.00 dollars to fund various much needed projects in the community and lend their own individual knowledge, talents and exper!se to oversee many of the much needed projects that would not have been achievable through to comple!on. Without their efforts and dedica!on, love and respect, many who have slipped through the cracks of Government funding and support services have found more than just dollars but friendship, love and respect that knows no bounds in The Brothers of the Blade Motorcycle Club. I am proud to have had the honour and the opportunity to nominate them for this award. I have witnessed firsthand the work that these men and women have done over the years in the name of humanity and because it was right, it was needed and it felt good. I have seen the magic that they have created. I have seen the smiles! I have seen the absolute joy that they produce! I have seen the change that this club has made in the lives of so many! They have allowed me the

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 18

Spring Motorcycle Show 2014 privilege of sharing in the experience that is so overwhelming and all consuming! There was no doubt in my mind that I had made the right choice in my first presenta on of an award that was being given for the very first me to a Club and their families and supporters that I admire and respect if they would agree to accept it as they don’t normally go in for publicity of their event as it isn’t a “public event” or spectacle in order to keep it honest, pure and spontaneous. They don’t put on a show. They are a well-established Motorcycle Club that is not on a mission to change the public’s percep on of bikers or change the “image” as they are comfortable in their own skin and sa sfied with who and what they are and don’t need or seek any valida on. I explained the award and my dilemma to Club President, Bruce and saw that my dilemma was now shared by him and it would be further shared as I was told he would bring it to the room and would have to get back to me. When the answer came back that they would indeed accept I couldn’t have been happier and passed on my nomina on to Peter Derry and Company. I supplied a short write up of my reasons for the nomina on for “The Announcer” to read and was told that I would be announced as presenter and be present on stage to make the presenta on, pose for the photo-op then get back to doing what I do. Nobody said I was going to have to do any talking!!!!!! Not un l an hour before presenta on me at a pre presenta on mee ng in the Show Office where I was introduced to a tall, good looking, grey haired gentleman with an amazing voice by the name of Hugh Wilson who was the announcer, along with other presenters like Glen Roberts from Mojo (Who, along with his lovely wife Gwenn, I’ve known and liked for years.) John E Pepper from CVMG news and others whose names are just a blur now because I just got wind of the fact that I was expected to speak and do the introduc on myself. “Hold on!” I stammered, now going into near panic mode as I looked around the room no ng that all the other presenters had pulled out prepared speeches and stuff and were reviewing them and prac cing their gestures and tones and such. “No one said I was going to have to talk! Isn’t that the job of the tall good looking grey haired guy with the amazing voice? Isn’t that why he gets paid the big bucks?” I queried poin ng wildly at Hugh who was reviewing the pieces of paper that he had in his hands. Everybody had paper in their hands except me. I had only a single crutch in my hand that was supposed to help me get to and up those narrow li le steps onto the stage but which I was now thinking of using as a weapon to try and

I thankfully rethought the whole threatening the announcer thing, as on further inspec on, he was not only a lot younger and be er looking than me he also appeared to be in pre y good shape and would probably beat me to a pulp with my own crutch right there and then and that would be truly embarrassing to The Mag, my family and to the recipient of the award and probably wasn’t what Peter, Bar and company had in mind when they came up with the award idea. So I quietly followed along as we were led to the stage area where I was further informed that I would be the last presenter. I was trying to hide my terror, my mind was abuzz, scram-

Spring Motorcycle Show 2014 bling to think of what I would say, wishing I had a 50 or two or maybe three right now. I heard Hugh do my intro and now it was my turn to make my way up on the stage and to the mike, hoping that I would be hit by a stray lightning bolt or have a major heart a ack while ascending the stairs and die a tragic but noble death rather than humiliate myself when I actually opened my mouth and spoke. I saw lots of familiar smiling faces before me but it was all just a blur and while I was aware that I was talking, I really have no clear idea what I was saying other than thanking Peter and Bar for crea ng the awards and for giving me the honour of nomina ng and presen ng the award and introducing Bruce before hobbling off to stage le! or right (Away from the mike!!) and let Bruce and the Club accept the award hoping that I didn’t come off as a total doofus. Now for the “woulda, shoulda, coulda,” phase that I’ve been going through ever since; what I wanted to say was; I think this award is a very good idea and thank Peter and Bar and the organizers of The Spring Motorcycle Show for crea ng it. The awards themselves look absolutely fantas c! They are not some cheap looking plaque with some words inscribed on it. They are classy and classic and would look good on any wall! It is good to be able to recognize and give credit to those who put their hearts and souls, blood, sweat, tears, energy, me, money and whatever else it takes to do an event in an effort to make a difference for their par cular cause for whatever their mo va on or inspira on but who’s mo va on isn’t public recogni on or reward. I will have no problem being to be able to find a worthy recipient for future

awards the problem will be narrowing it down to a single choice as there are so many, that do so much, many without adver sing budgets, staff, crea ve departments, organizing commi ees, boards, limitless sponsors or government support , subsidies and write offs. My choice this year was based on years of witnessing them in ac on and seeing the good that they do and have done. If you would like to see an example of what I’m talking about, go to our website theridersmag.com and look up Brothers of the Blade Daybreak for a picture gallery. There

are write ups of the events each year in the archives that will give you a glimpse into this fantas c event. Sunday we were in early with Senior and Bad Bob not far behind and today Greg who along with his bride Jean do such

a great job of deliveries down in through Norfolk and vicinity was coming in as well and as we were star ng the day with limited numbers of Mags to distribute, I could concentrate on ge ng picture to go along with the ar cle. I worked my way around the show ge ng shots of all the amazing Show bikes, vintage bikes, an que bikes, racing bikes and just about every other kind of bike on display and of course taking me to talk to this one and that one along the way. Quinn and his crew were up from Welland with some of their amazing crea ons and Steve Schuler was out as usual in his typical posi on, bent over cloth and polish in hand forever polishing his fantas c, jaw dropping builds that also do quite well everywhere he goes and defy the bounds of what would have been thought, of not that long ago, as impossible to do to a motorcycle. There was once again a great representa on from Quebec with Speed trix and The Rat Shoppe and others compe ng for more honours and prize money from this Show. These guys always tend to win big down here as they have seemingly limitless imagina on and crea vity as they further stretch the bounds of what is possible to do with a motorcycle in terms of paint,

mechanics, engineering, and crea vity. I was not the least bit surprized to see Michael Walter as he has become a fixture at these shows was once again out with his great looking bike that is set in an ever expanding graveyard scene that

Now some of the statuary actually talks and I can hardly wait un l its next appearance to see what is going to be added next. It is always a hit with Show goers and the Judges alike as he piles up one trophy a"er another.

Canadian drag racing Queen Sandra Carter Beal had a huge display with her drag bike front and centre and it is always a pleasure to see and talk to her. There was certainly lots to see and do at the show and no shortage of vendors and good stuff to buy at great prices as my meandering through the other halls was about to show me. Fast Freddy Hale along with his deligh#ul daughter Amy, Son Ted and a

fine select crew were seen doing brisk business at their big booth displaying just some of the good stuff that they have at their great store up in the wilds of Pefferlaw! Take a ride up and see them some me. I made my way through the ever growing crowds and many vendors, friends and so on and finally sought refuge and relief at the beer garden where my friendly bartender saw me coming and had my drink poured and ready upon my arrival! Back to Hall 1 and I made my way to JD Cycles booth where I found him once again surrounded by a throng of people interested in the really great Mystery rear ends with the fully independent suspension that he is the Canadian distributor for and the fantas c trike conversions that come out of his shop. The interest was incredible and the lines of those wishing to speak to him grew longer instead of diminishing so I waited for a while but he remained busy so I wandered off in search of other stuff to do and ran into Shawn McCooey from the World renowned Fort Erie Motorcycle Swap meet that happens this year on May 1. I soon came upon some distrac on in the form of several scan ly clad, extremely pre y, very shapely ladies and we were in a large room filled with great looking motorcycles……What to do? I decided to try something totally unique and combine the two elements and take some pictures. It turned out well! Who knew pre y girls and good looking bikes would go together so well? The day was gone in a flash and it was me to take my bar stool from our booth and se le in in front of the stage for the awards presenta ons. By the me I got back to the booth Peppermint Pa y and Big Sco had the booth all dismantled and packed up and we made our way to the exits and to the truck. We were loaded up and on our way home in record me. Great show! See you all next year!

She tripped and fell - got up, and then n In obvious disgust, Ran to the car, stepped on the gas, And faded in the dust. A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his Father as to when they could discuss his use of the car. His father said he’d make a deal with his son: “You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible, and get your hair cut. Then we’ll talk about the car.” The boy thought about that for a moment, decided he’d settle for the offer, and they agreed on it. A er about six weeks, his father said “Son, you’ve brought your grades up and I’ve observed that you have been studying your Bible but I’m disappointed that you haven’t had your hair cut”.

Choppers Custom Works May 2014 Builder/ Shop of the Month Just about a year ago Tom O’Marra along with his adorable wife Audrey and his brother Mike decided to pool their individual and combined talents, passions and dreams and along their crew, made up of family and a team of very skilled mechanics opened this great little shop right in the middle of beau ful downtown Selkirk and don’t regret the decision for a minute. It has been an extremely busy but rewarding year as they have developed and maintained a very strong and loyal customer base by delivering top notch service at affordable prices and being honest with people and trea ng their customers the way they would like to be treated. They can do everything from regular service items like oil changes, tune ups, res, repairs and maintenance to custom fabrica on and complete custom builds. No job is too big or too small! The crew has been carefully put together combining family members, Son’s Joe and Marcus, Brother/Partner Mike, Mike’s Son in Law Aaron who, along with top notch mechanic Ryan Galloway and individuals, whose individual and pooled skills, knowledge and talent complement each other and makes for a great team capable of doing great things and the proof is in the work that comes out of the shop and the sa sfied customers riding down the road. A happy customer is a repeat customer and they have many of them. The store itself serves mainly as a showroom and is chock full of bikes, parts, accessories, clothing and motorcycle related collectables, and everything else you would expect and want to find in a motorcycle shop. This takes up one side and part of the other side of the building but Audrey has claimed her own space and created a truly amazing Art Gallery and gi shop in which she has an enormous and fascina ng display of Original Artworks. Many of the items are her original crea ons, but other local ar-

sans have their work on display as well. She has amassed a huge selec on of cra s, gi s, pain ngs, prints, jewelry, art cards, fabrics, clothing and lots of stuff that just looks and smells fantas c. You might think that that a Custom Motorcycle Shop and an Arts and Cra s Store is a strange marriage of ideas but it really does work well and the two blend to make this shop really unique with a dis nct charm and character all of its own. They maintain two other shops in town at which the real mechanical work is done. One shop contains the full machine shop, welding equipment and other gear and is where the fabrica on and messier jobs are done while the finesse work and finishing is done at the second shop so as to ensure that finished or near finished work is not accidentally contaminated. The sheer volume of work that has come through their doors has at mes, overwhelmed their present set-up and expansion to a larger work area may soon be considered, but the store is a definite keeper. They are quite involved in the community as well, suppor ng local chari es like the Lion’s Club and an animal rescue group called Paws for Cause as Tom and Audrey are animal lovers and really like the work that this group does and what they stand for. Tom’s love of motorcycles and passion for working on them started more than twenty five years ago when this former “Car Guy” with a immense fondness for bikes, built his first custom; a 1974 FX and just kept on wrenching and soon found himself in demand as he had earned a reputa on as a trustworthy and very capable wrench. He started doing it full me in 2007 and things just sort of evolved into what he has today. I discovered that it isn’t just motorcycles that are custom at this store. They have an amazing Custom Chopper Works Lawn Mower that is the talk of the town when they get out cu ng the grass

Choppers Custom Works May 2014 Builder/ Shop of the Month with this beast! It is the brainchild of Tom’s Brother Mike and Son in Law, Aaron who, when asked to put something in a local parade but had nothing, but immediately put their minds together and then went about the task of combining the frame and front end of a 1995 FLH with a Bolens Lawn tractor. It was a hit at the parade and has been borrowed for other parades by the Selkirk Lion’s Club and they even won a 1st place cash prize of $2500.00. The Lion’s Club is much apprecia ve of Custom Choppers Works as well and work with them in many fundraisers and promo ons that has raised them a good deal of money. There is one project and accomplishment that Tom is quite proud of; that being the complete rebuild and restora on of a 1983 FLH for friend Wayne Peconi. This was a special project with a special meaning and a very special purpose. This was a motorcycle that was originally owned, ridden and loved by Wayne’s father Nick, who had bought the bike new from Toronto Harley Davidson and cherished it un l one fateful Friday 13th in 2002, on the way to Port Dover at the age of 87, he had an alterca on with a car that le him in a coma for 2 months with many injuries that included two broken legs, broken collar bone, broken ribs with one It’s Kool To Drink Healthy of them puncRENT A FREEZER FULL OF ICE turing his lung FOR YOUR WEEKEND PARTY along with numerous bruises, tears, cuts and abrasions. The bike which suffered mainly cosmetic damage had landed on top of him a er the crash eventually became the property of Wayne who OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK completely Mon - Fri 10 to 7 ! down to the frame which he had powder coated, but the bike remained in that state of disassembly un l this past year when Wayne decided to put it back together in tribute to his Dad and in me for his Dad’s 100th Birthday celebra on. He turned to long- me trusted, friend Tom and his crew at Custom Chopper Works to make it happen. Just before Christmas, Tom and Company picked up the frame and numerous boxes of parts and went to town on it. The project took a couple of months and a bit to complete as they had so much to do to bring it back to original condi on, but they got it done much to the delight of Wayne and his en re family. But no

one was more delighted than father, Nick who was brought to tears by the reunion. The bike looks truly amazing and runs like a dream! This is the work that is typical of this shop who takes great pride in their work and their reputa on. They have built a nice business on Main St. in beau ful downtown Selkirk and they deserve the success that they have worked so hard to achieve. Their events such as the very well a ended Grand opening of the store last June 1st that will be repeated this May31st at their 1st Anniversary Celebra on and Open House are a highlight for the Town as there will be lots going on. Also on the agenda for this year is a “Riders Ride” on June 14th that starts and finishes at the Store. It isn’t for any charity or causes other than to get together with friends, fellow riders and Kindred Spirits and enjoy a day doing what they love; riding, camaraderie and friendship. There will be entertainment, refreshments and a pig roast at the end of the ride. Check out their ad for further details. It is a great Shop. Stop by and see them when you’re in the area.

Shenanigans Well, this seemingly never ending winter, finally let up for a few weeks in early April, just long enough for a few above freezing, double digit riding days. Within 2 weeks, the 4 # snowbanks slowly dwindled down to reveal the grass with its grungy a#ermath, the robins made their first appearances, and hope was in the air, that riding season would soon be here. Then, just like that, the feud between Ol’ Man Winter and Mother Nature reared its ugly head. One not willing to give up its strangle hold on us, the other trying to do her best to get us on 2 wheels, knees in the breeze. Just like an old married couple, the Ol’ Man had to get the last word in, before he let the Missus have her way. With the extremely low temperatures, bad road condi$ons, and quick thaw, our roads are a li%le worse for wear. Heaving, caving, potholes, puddles, salt and sand, now make it very treacherous for any vehicles on the road, especially motorcycles. I understand that the an$cipa$on and need for a ride can greatly outweigh sense and sensibility, but excitement and underes$ma$ng the condi$ons, can be costly and even deadly. Un$l there is a good hard rain, and street sweepers (in town) have made their rounds, the debris and chemical dust, can wreak havoc on the bikes themselves. Salt and brine are two corrosive nasty’s that love to chew on chrome, seals and wiring, and can hide in all sorts of nooks and crannies. Sand, is for the beach, not for being kicked up by other vehicles, to chip away at your nice paint job, and seems to have the opposite effect on bike $res than its intended purpose in the winter, which is trac$on. Keep your eyes open for animals as well, that may s$ll be a bit lethargic from hiberna$on, but are on the move. Other than the usual road hazards, that can occur any $me of the year, also be weary of the cagers. Just like some of them aren’t prepared for the first snowfall driving, so too are they not prepared to see motorcycles out early in the spring. A#er months of following snow plows

with Sherri O’Irish and sanders, white knuckle snow storms, and freezing rain, the mindset just isn’t there, to think about motorcycles being on the road, let alone watching for them. MAY IS MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS MONTH, and I urge everyone to spread the word to “Look twice, and save a life!”. Tell your friends and family, post on online, or anything else you can think of to get the word out there, not only now, but all riding season. REMEMBER: Common sense is a flower, that doesn’t grow in everyone’s garden, but you can plant the seed, and hope!

Ultimate Bar Burner

This months feature guy is Rusty from Windsor, we were looking around for a few bikes to shoot on our trip to Windsor for our Run to the North Wall in July of 2012 and Rusty came up. We had shot his sons beau ful panhead earlier in the year and that appeared in the mag a few years back and brother was that a sweet ride. Rusty has been riding his whole life and cares not to discuss his age or how many bikes he has owned but he did say that his very first bike that he ever bought was a 1958 Panhead and he paid $1000 for it, back in the day as they would say. He’s done a lot of riding over the years and had a lot of different jobs but he says that he has always come back to his love of wrenching on motorcycles as his main gig. Rusty has the good fortune of working for well known “c yc o l o g i st ” and all around nice guy Iggy from Power Cycle in Windsor who was a long

THE RIDERS MAG ---- PAGE 36

me supporter of the mag in the earlier years when he was the top seller for more than one brand of Metric bike. Rusty says he only ever took one really long ride and that was to Sturgis back in 1995 with another well known Ontario Character, Puppy, whom we lost to cancer a few years back. Rusty says that it was a memorable ride and that he was good with it and does not feel the urge to take along trip but he says that is one of the benefits of working for a great guy like Iggy, if you wanted to take off and go to a rally whether it be Sturgis, Myrtle Beach, or Laconia or just Friday the 13th he says Iggy was always easy and said hey if ya need the me take the me. He knows first hand saying that on more than one occasion he had to dig in and cover for other mechanics from

Ultimate Bar Burner bar burner, awesome looking bike but not worth a shit for anything beyond that and as long as you wanna stay within about an hour of home then you are probably good to go. If you wanna travel further or in more comfort, bringing some stuff with you and having some tunes then what you really need is a touring bike preferably something with either ultra, or classic in the name, incidentally Rusty does also own a 1991 Ultra which he says he loves dearly and has maintained mechanically but if he ever sold this bar burner the top of his buy list would include an a lot newer street glide. Rusty ended up picking the bike up from his brother trading his late 90’s fat boy to his brother and he says, ya he owed me some dough too so I told him you wanna get rid of the tan I’ll take off all the cash you owe me and we can call it even. the garage who wanted to take off and visit and event and it was up to the others in the shop to pick up the slack and get the customers bikes out the door. When they want to ride they can get a li le impa ent and let’s face it riding season is short around here. Speaking of riders Rusty speaks highly of this chopped, and raked 2006 Titan with the S & S Sidewinder engine in it saying that it’s the ul mate bar burner making a comfortable ride at 70 miles an hour with no vibra on at all in the bike. He says he sure wouldn’t want to ride it across the con nent or anything but you go a have at least one bar burner in the garage, and F.Y.I. this one’s for sale. Having said that we did do the shoot a few years back now and it is quite possible that Rusty has found a home for this ul mate bar burner and he did have a project bike on the bench that he was working on for himself that we might be able to feature at some future date but he says that when the Titan dealer in Toronto went under there were about 6 bikes up for grabs through an auc on and that par cular bike ended up in the showroom at Iggy’s Power Cycle in Windsor and Rusty’s brother snapped the brand new 2 year old bike up for a frac on of its original $64,000 asking price. He didn’t say outright but I assume that he found out exactly what Rusty has already pointed out, it’s a great

Rusty feels he made a pre y fair deal with his brother and got the bike and as I said back in 2012 he had another bar burner style bike on the bench. A 96” shovel stroker in a rigid frame that he had been nkering with for a while now saying that working for Iggy affords him a lot of down me in the winter to work on his bikes at home as there’s not a lot of work for the full staff of mechanics all winter long so they find themselves with some me on their hands to work on their own personal rides and Rusty has been working on this telling me that he was pu"ng a baker 6 speed into it which I have been told is a lot of transmission for a shovel style bike but he says it gives him op ons on star ng and also smoothes out the ride of the rigid bike overall. Rusty seemed really intent on upgrading his Decker from the 91 he currently rides to a newer model and it seemed to be all about the tunes. He wanted to be able to hook up his own tunes from an MP3 type device into the stereo and have the tunes he wanted to listen to, saying that they had some pre y fair sta ons in the Windsor Detroit area but that they got pre y lame as you headed east.

Asking God to reveal your sin; asking him to shine a light on all the gunk and garbage in your life. It’s a li le in mida ng. A li le frightening, even. That’s why facing our sin is something we usually try to avoid, rather than inten onally seek out. And that’s part of the problem. O en, when God sends messengers to speak to us about our sin, messengers in the form of a husband, or a wife, or a friend, or even an enemy, we clap our hands over our ears. We refuse to listen to the word of correc on. We change the subject, we a ack the messenger, we leave the room. If that doesn’t work, then we deny the sin; we redefine it, we ra onalize it. And finally, if all else fails, we rename the sin to make it seem less sinful, or if possible, even virtuous. We come up with a pleasant-sounding euphemism. So gossip becomes “just sharing my concerns”. Greed becomes “thri iness”. A glu on is someone with “a healthy appe te”. Pride is reframed as “high self-esteem”. Lying is “stretching the truth”. A harsh, cri cal a tude merely indicates that you have high standards. You get the idea. My point is that you have to be willing for God to show you your sin. You have to be sincere. Because if you’re not, I guarantee that you’ll find some way to avoid hearing what God is saying. I’d like to share some encouragement from the Scriptures; passages that can help us muster the courage to face our own sin. One thing that helps me is the knowledge that God is a gentle, and kind, and compassionate father. And because of that, he won’t give me more than I can bear. He won’t load me down with such convic on of sin that it crushes me; he won’t reveal so much ugliness in my heart that I’m just emo onally and spiritually overwhelmed. Instead, he will lovingly, and carefully, reveal enough to produce repentance, but not so much that I despair. How do I know that? Because that’s how Christ dealt with the disciples. Another thing that helps me is the knowledge that God is fully aware of my flaws, and faults, and failings. They come as no surprise to him, because he understands human weakness and frailty. And yet, in spite of everything, he s ll loves me, and accepts me, and cherishes me. The third thing that encourages me is that no ma er what I find in my heart, I know it’s forgiven. I’m covered. There is no possibility of discovering something that will cause God to withdraw his affec on from me, or revoke my salva on, or renege on his promises. Nothing I may learn about myself can in any way alter my rela onship with God, because all my sins – past, present, and future – have been paid for in the death of Christ. That means I don’t have to deny them or try to hide them, either from God or from myself. What an exhilara ng sense of freedom. Now, do we really need the Holy Spirit to reveal our sin to us? Yes. He can speak to us through various means, through a book, or a friend; and certainly through the The Life Manual. We can’t trust our hearts to tell us the truth when we ourselves are the subject of the inves ga on. In our own minds, we always put ourselves in the best possible light. We are not impar al judges of our own mo ves and conduct. Just as we can be surrounded by clu er in our own home and not even no ce it, so we need God’s help to see the clu er and debris in our own lives. The good news, or the bad news, depending on your perspec ve, is that by the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit we can see ourselves from God’s point of view. So what do you do when God answers your prayer, and begins to open your eyes to some area of your life that needs to change? It’s something like when you’re ge ng ready for a visit from your in-laws, and you suddenly realize just how dirty

Bikers Church and un dy your house has become. “Look at those windows! I can barely see out of them! And this rug! It’s covered with cat hairs! And how many mes have I asked you to clean out that garage! It’s supposed to be a two car garage, and we can’t even get one car in there, much less two!” The first reac on is to close our eyes, because we don’t like what we see. It was more pleasant and comfortable before, when we didn’t have to deal with the reality of grimy windows, and a filthy rug, and a garage piled floor to ceiling with junk. We liked being able to tell ourselves that everything was fine, so that we could go golfing or shopping, instead of spending the weekend scrubbing windows and vacuuming the rug. And so there’s a strong urge to just forget what we’ve seen. Now, it would be rather silly of me to decide that since I don’t en rely approve of what I’m seeing in the mirror, I’m just going to ignore it. I’m going to pretend I never saw my reflec on. If I did that, then I’d never know when my socks didn’t match, or when my shirt was stained. And yet, that’s what many people do when the Holy Spirit holds the mirror of God’s Word up to their life. It’s what many people do when they hear a sermon that touches on an area of their life that needs to change. They close their Bible, and they completely forget what God was saying to them. How foolish! Let’s decide that each one of us in our own heart, that we will seek to rid our lives of anything which hinders us from following Christ. And let’s remember that, just as it is God who reveals to us the need for change, so also it is God who provides us with the ability and power to change. Pastor Dave

The Zulus fought the English army to a stands ll with spears and animal hide shields! The Zulu warriors DUSTY DEREK didn’t understand guns. The Swaziland border has three stages of entry as vehicles are searched; documenta on taken, passports stamped, a road tax of 50 Rand ($8.00) is assessed and paid and passports re-stamped. more guards that Harleys are made in the USA and not Canada because of what reason I never did figure out. I finally admi ed my obvious mistake and acquiesced that indeed Harley is manufactured in Canada. We were finally allowed to pass through the offious rigamarole. We stopped close by for a cold quart of beer. Shi change at the border and two of the officers walked by. I jokingly offer them a beer if I can get my road tax money back. One of them scowled and angrily spewed; “if it wasn’t for freedom, you would be caged and poked with a sharp s ck!” Ahh, some racism to go with my rapidly warming drink. Contras ng this bit of animosity, the laughing and smiling na ve teenagers were crowding around the Harleys. Our other riding partner, Buddy then handed one of them a helmet and rode him up the road and back. Soon there was a parade with the local policeman looking on in disbelief and mock disapproval. When Buddy pulled up the officer mo oned us aside; “What did we think we were doing? This is not acceptable,” he pompously chas sed. It went back and forth with the end result of Buddy having to give a 100 Rand ($16.00) bribe to the cop’s girlfriend as he could not be seen publicly taking gra . I didn’t want Buddy to pay but Buddy didn’t want to be caged and poked with a s ck. Time to leave as one transgression and necessary bribe would lead to more of the same. We then con nued our trip through Swaziland slower than our usual speeds because of goats and ca le wandering onto the two lane paved highway along the main road past sugar cane fields to the next town. Before town, a “No Fencing” sign was posted and I started to look closely into the roadside rocky brush. Some fierce warthogs with their oversized tusks came into view tro"ng parallel to my bike. A proud but disinterested male lion lay amongst some rocks and grass close to the roadway. Then of course, the monkeys darted amongst the trees while more warthogs ran from the noise of our exhausts. We entered the only in-town hotel, a shabby affair. We looked for a restaurant. The only food we were comfortable ea ng was a well-done vegetarian pizza and some chocolate bars and bo led water from South Africa. We then went to a local pub run by a tough Vietnamese woman, very much in charge. The

Riding door was locked but we were let in. Whoa! ...backs against the wall boys. We were surrounded by Zulus, three white boys being picked clean by their steely eyes. Not a smile in the joint. We ordered a beer to save face, drank it calmly and exited before who knows what might happen...but it was gonna happen. I went to the only other bar within walking distance. I le feeling disconcerted. The television was blaring with gangsta rap preaching the “get rich or die trying” mantra in an impressionable country with an average daily wage of $1.00. We learned later that there were fine bed and breakfasts and even some luxury hotels just past the town hidden away in the mountainous foothills and the nature reserves. The roosters started crowing at 4am for the 6am sunrise giving us an early start on another beau ful winter’s day. We rode our FLHT’s north with the pleasant smell of nightfire burning wood in the air, for the 50 mile ride to Piggs Peak an old gold mining town near the Swazi-SA border. The rural Swazi Zulu na ves are very friendly, are taught English in school and everyone waves with a big smile as you ride by. Quite a change from the previous night. At Piggs Peak we ride east to Bulembu along a 15-mile treacherous dirt road called the Saddleback. It is along a mountainous peak that cambers down from the centre, drawing the bike down to so red earth flir ng with the deep unforgiving valley below on either side. I find it necessary to ride at 45 kph to stay at the top of the camber away from a treacherous fall into jungle hundreds of feet below. The vistas are spectacular but one must stop your bike to see them as riding takes all one’s concentra on and then some. Riding this road called the “Devils Knuckles” takes skill and confidence. Animal warning signs with a paw on them are frequent. I pull ahead going my speed but Buddy and Guy are nervous. I pull over to wait for them half an hour up the now jungle road. A Range Rover barrels up, stops and the driver asks if those two fools on bikes back aways are with me. “Fools?” “Yes, they are walking their bikes, engines running in gear. Go get them, make them ride their bikes or else predators will surely get them.” I ride back. I ask the boys if they

289-759-2002 boys realized riding at 45 kph on the hazardous road was much safer than walking it. We finally hit the Swazi border in the middle of nowhere where the guards were shocked to see the big bikes. We went through another officious ritual. This border closes at 4pm since there is only two hours daylight le and reopens at sunrise; the roadway is much too dangerous to transverse in the dark. There is a poster on the board to report border guard corrup on. We all laugh. Our raucous laughing prevents the shakedown for more bribes. Then there is another 20 miles of dirt road along a mountainous ridge, nicknamed “Nature’s Roller coaster” where riding mistakes are also not a good idea. Back safely (safe?) in South Africa we appreciate the fine paved roads be er than at home. I write this while at a BIG biker party in Buenos Aries Argen na. We have ridden through Uruguay and traveled to a biker party in southern Brazil. Next month, I will write about “Riding Uruguay”. donny

Flat When I was first asked if I could add content for “The Riders Mag”, I was perplexed on what to do with the opportunity, but then a#er pu$ng some thought in, I’ve decided to take this column on as a blog ,to give you an inside scoop on the racing world. But first, who am I? I’m Aaron Hesmer, the President of Flat Track Canada, a new racing organiza on that promotes flat track across the country. I come from a racing background, where my family was dedicated to the racing world and supported Canadian flat track since the early 60’s. My grandfather had a race team with Willy Goreman and Bill Holden and others riding for him. My father and Uncle built the Paris Speedway in 1991 with Dave Havill, and my brother and cousin rode MX and speedway. I myself started out at the age of five in MX, a#er a few years influenced from my family I started speedway at the age of twelve, on a 250cc JR speedway bike with a Triumph cub motor. A#er a couple of years I moved up to a 500cc and over

me started winning races. Over my career I’ve won three Canadian Championships and competed all over the United States. Over my racing career my main discipline has always been speedway but I’ve always dabbled in few different things like MX, flat track, trials, and trail riding. Since 2010 I’ve been organizing and promo ng races at Paris Speedway, the goal at the me was to keep the track from closing due to the lack of rider par cipa on. My team and I went from having 12 riders and no spectators on a weekly basis to 100 riders with 300 – 400 spectators on a weekly basis. At the beginning of 2013, a couple friends, Lawrence Hacking, Doug Lawrence, and Mike Mason, talked me into running larger race events and have a li le race series. Ever since then I’ve become the founder and president of Flat Track Canada. Just entering our second year and we’ve been building a lot of momentum and developing a great founda on for the future of the sport. We are crea ng exposure that the sport hasn’t seen in recent history and we’re star ng to introduce some corporate sponsors. The idea is to build a strong youth following and introductory programs for flat track and so far we’ve been successful. The sport has all the right fundamentals and a very passionate following. My goal is to look outside the box and introduce the missing elements of the sport to rebuild its former glory. I always refer myself as “we” when talking in context about Flat Track Canada. I may make a lot of the decisions but nothing is possible without my team behind me. Kim and Todd Vallee, Leanne Deadman, Mike Zelaska, my father Joe and my wife Katalin as well as a slew of volunteers that help out a great deal every week. Obviously none of this would be possible without them. Flat Track Canada has a talented and passionate team and I’m proud to work with them. I look forward to wri ng my next ar cle whatever it may be. Please come out and enjoy our races this summer! 2014 Championship Race Series Schedule May.17th – Paris Half Mile – Paris, On. Today, April 12, 2014 a perfect day for a ride. Where should I go? Ah yes, Jacox Harley-Davidson open house featuring “Project Rushmore”! Le the house, without listening to my be er judgement, and wore my winter coat. Oh, it kept me warm, but the hoodie drove me nuts on the 401! I will not make that mistake again. I arrived at Jacox in Mississauga, around noon and had to park in the furthest corner of the parking lot…the place was packed! It felt so good to see everyone, the bikes and the rumbles. Finally, riding me is back! A lot was going on at the dealership, which had something for everyone: touring LED ligh ng, fit shop, infotainment, triple vent system demos, jumpstart (simulator rides), seminars, tent sale, oil change special, hourly door prizes... and much more. And, let’s not forget the food by Pig Out Roasters! Ventured in the store and was amazed at the number of people mingling around and cha ng up with old friends. I certainly did my share of that with my friend John Hall and Yvonne Bowler, two wonderful and helpful employees of Jacox. This summer, why not make it a ride and go visit them? You can enjoy the numerous back roads or the 401 to get there…they are expec ng you! Thanks for having us and for the great day had by all. “People are like motorcycles: Each is customized a bit differently” (By Chopper Exchange) Manon

Ladies and their Harleys

This month’s feature lady is Kathy, and what a fine looking ride she has I got to tell ya the price that she picked up for was more than just a steal it was a crime in progress I think, her husband figures that what was spent on accessories and paint by the original owner probably exceeded the price they paid for the bike. It came out of the great state of Florida and Kathy bought it 3 years ago. Kathy had always liked bikes and said that she had always

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 46

dated guys who rode bikes and when she finally married that her guy had a bike and he sold that bike when their oldest child was about 2 years old. When their kids were young they lived on a farm and dad brought home a dirt bike for the oldest one day and Kathy says the younger boy mopped a lot that his brother got a bike and he didn’t get anything so they older boy let his brother take a ride. It didn’t go well and the boy ended up having an accident ending up underneath the bike and its hot exhaust pipe, it certainly wasn’t terminal and le not las ng physical injuries or scars but she says that he’s never been interested in bikes, boats or any of that sort of stuff since and she laughs when she told me that he thinks that bike is way too much for her and that she should sell it and just ride on the back of dads.

Ladies and their Harleys

So back to the story, one of her husband’s friends had a big metric cruiser and he wanted to upgrade to a newer Harley and convinced him to get back into riding with him and he would share his brand new Harley road king with him if he would take the big metric cruiser off his hands for a fair price. Well he agreed but unfortunately the road king never materialized and he was le riding around alone which was not at all what he had wanted when he returned to riding. Well with the kids all grown up, with kids of their own and hubby having a bike Kathy decided that it was her me to express her aspira ons to ride with a bike of her own, not only a bike of her own but a Harley. Unfortunately for her the Harley part did not materialize at first but she did get a bike of her own a big Yamaha and she rode that bike for 3 years and was very comfortable with it and hubby had sold off his metric and picked himself up an Ultra Classic by this me and had joined a local riding club in his area just to go out and ride with friends. About 3 years ago they were on the annual Highway of Hero’s ride and when they rolled into the end of the ride there was one of those vendors there that sells used bikes up from the good old U.S.A. and her husband walked around the end of their trailer and looked inside spo ng the black heritage with pink stripes and lots of extra goodies like the hard bags and tour pack along with lots of li le chrome pieces that had been added and called over to her saying hey Kathy you go a see this bike, li le did he know that she fell in love with it on the spot and stole it right then and there. Kathy sent me an email when she bought the bike asking if the mag was interested in a tech savvy grandma who loves riding her Harley and sent in a few pics of the bike. Well she was running her own independent m e d i c a l technology company which she had been doing for about 15 years at that point and had recently bought out a partner to have more

control over the business and celebrated by buying this gorgeous ride. Since she sent me that email she has sold her share of the business to her partner saying that the government had changed the rules and that had caused a decline in business and she was red of travelling all the way across Toronto every day to go to work, and it was me to focus on herself and family, good for her. As a ma er of fact Kathy waited so long for the shoot that she went from being a business owner to being re red to buying a re rement spot with her husband on Rice Lake and building a house on the property to re re to and her husband who runs a renova ons company was going to slow down a bit working 2 and 3 day weeks during the riding season, or at least that was the plan when I talked to her last fall. She had said that she was a fair weather rider, and that she loved to ride as long as she was comfortable. If she got wet or cold she was no longer comfortable and would no longer enjoy the ride so that was why they always focused on local rides and events. She says that back in 2012 they had gone

up to the Bobcaygeon Bikefest and had a wonderful me but it started to rain and she had to ride home in the rain, all the way from Bobcaygeon to Whitby. She had rode the en re distance and was only a few blocks from home when she hit a slick spot and the back end of the bike tried to pass the front in a classic motorcycle jack knife maneuver, hi ng the back wheel of her husband’s bike, laying hers down and hi ng the curb in the boulevard. She didn’t suffer any las ng physical damage from the accident, saying it was low speed but she did damage the windshield and lights when the bike hit the curb and had to have one of the saddlebags repainted, she had some mods done to the paint at the same me. I asked her if that might be the source of her dislike or riding in rain but she was definite that it was there long before the accident. The duo plan to take a ride to the east coast someday as many of their friends are heading that way but they may just throw the bikes in a trailer and tow them out there op ng to ride once they get there, sounds like a plan. I don’t think you need to look too hard to spot that cool paint job of Kathy’s out in the Peterborough area this summer.

(613) 392-8433 www.makeitroar.com Living in the eastern townships some mes can be stressful when it comes to climate issues and this winter has been a monster for just about everyone and if it wasn’t the longest winter on record it sure as hell seemed like it. My buddy Chuck & I jumped at the idea of heading down to Toronto to a end the 33rd Annual Na onal Motorcycle & Ta oo Show and help out at The Riders Mag booth because it was a welcome distrac on while we all waited for the last of the snow to disappear and the rains to wash away all the salt off the roads so riding season can begin. This was our third road trip so far this year to a end a motorcycle show but this one was truly a special because the closer we got to Toronto, the more rapidly the snow disappeared on the landscape and our road conversa on kept being do ed with “Look! Another Bike On The Road!” then followed by a long sigh of an cipa on. Considering it was a Friday, the ride down was actually pre y

uneven ul but as soon as we dropped down off the DVP, our pace dropped from road runner to snail and conversa on became a blend of our being blown away by all the construc on of skyscrapers happening along the lakefront like a wheat field & the number of idiots that were apparently licensed drivers con nually trying to play chicken with us for lane space. Thanks to the generosity of the Toronto drivers we were allowed to see more of their city than we planned because they would not let us ease our way off at the appropriate exit so we had to travel down to the next one in order to get off and then work our way back to the C.N.E grounds. Upon our arrival we chose to stretch our legs before we did any se ng up, so I took a stroll around to snoop and see who else was going to be set up at the show. While it is in a different building these days, I remember se ng up with my business at the very first show 33 years ago along with several of our friends who kindly came down to help us set up and man the booth over the weekend. Those were great mes and having good friends come down to help us out in the following years became a sort of “family” tradi on along which included bringing all our dogs as well. We used to book a bunch of rooms beside each other at this sleazy li le motel out on Kingston Rd and always looked forward to going out to eat Friday nights at this great li le tex-mex can na down on Queen St and then on Saturday nights, this li le eastern European restaurant which was set up like a school cafeteria and situated in what once were two li le stores and they simply punched a hole in the wall to join them and they became a restaurant. The food was incredible and the por ons were “Biker-

Motorcyco Beau Size” and each year we all looked forward to this wonderful Slavic lady who would take our picture with a Polaroid camera and post it on the wall just above the cash register. One me I remarked that she should be careful because the pictures of all of us might scare away the other customers but then her husband informed me that whenever they had “troublesome” customers in the restaurant, his wife, would go to the cash and take down the latest picture of all of us and point out to the “pain in the ass”, that the bikers in the picture were her friends and it would be best if the customer didn’t cause her any problems. Smart lady...even be er cook! The first thing that caught my eye when we found The Riders Mag booth was our noble leader, Cri er’s new trike that he had built with the wizardry of Josh from JD Cycles, so that Cri er can “deliver’ the Mag at various motorcycle events throughout the summer. It really is quite the crea on, complete with a polished wood box on the back with sandblasted signage & led lights giving it a pick-up truck sort of look or for those of us old enough, a kind of contemporary H-D servi-car and you can rest assured that Cri er will draw lots of a en on when he pulls in anywhere and opens up that trunk and begins to hand out the latest issue of the Mag. Just behind our booth was the was the display for Boot Hill Hearse and while I am certainly in no freaking hurry to have my “Last Ride” I certainly see that any self-respec ng biker would be very proud to take their final spin in a set-up like Boot Hill’s trike-drawn Victorian-style hearse. During my stroll around the hall it became pleasantly obvious that this year’s show was going to have many more custom bikes on display than there had been when we came down for the show last year and a number of these bikes were truly radical in their design reminding us of the days of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth with the imagina ve placement of motors, pipes and wild themes. Some of the first friendly faces from the O awa area that we came upon were our good friends & brothers from the SFJ (Soldiers For Jesus) Donnie B, Big G, Front Brake Nate and “Breezy” aka Yves Brisbois. They had all come down to par cipate in the show by having a booth and using the opportunity to inform the public about the SFJ and about all the great projects that they do in their community, some of which are providing street people with emergency survival kits during the winter and to their well appreciated support of various motorcycle events in O awa such as all the cruise nights for motorcycles that The Cel c Brotherhood put on. took advantage of the exhibit area for the motorcycles and enjoyed the wide variety of bikes that people had entered. In one display there were two pre-1910 Harley Davidsons and not far from them was an equally vintage

Across from the Mag booth were some of the Bikers for Christ from Trenton, another bunch of great guys who finally convinced me to make the effort and come down their way on May 10th and a end their blessing of the bikes and enjoy the BBQ they will be having as well and I really like the Trenton –Belleville area so I suspect I will be making a weekend out of it. Indian motorcycle and all three had been me culously restored and I found myself going back several mes to take pictures of them. One exhibitor had a trailer made to look like a 50’s Chevy Nomad hotrod all fixed up inside so that he could carry whatever he needed on a tour and during the me we cha ed he had several people come up and express their admira on for his concept & fabrica on and as an added a rac on he pulled this trailer with a big green Goldwing which had a drop down side on the saddlebag which hid a powerful compressor. Another well known individual from the O awa area at the show was Dave Smith aka Snake, who had brought down a number of items from his private collec on to sell including a 1947 Schwinn Whizzer, which just happens to be the very first two-wheeled bike with a motor that I drove when I was about nine years old and I truly keep thinking I would like to buy it from him and hang on my fireplace wall and just enjoy looking at it. He also brought his boa constrictor which he let one of the young ladies in the Motorcycle Enhancement booth pose with for pictures and I can’t really tell which drew more a en on, the lady or the snake but during that me I had an opportunity to have a chat with Tamre Winger, who was pu ng

Motorcyco Beau the finishing touches on polishing up a few of the bikes that were in their display. Later on in the show Tamre came by with a young man who was about five or six years old, who has Down’s Syndrome named Moe and she asked if it would be okay if he sat on Cri er’s trike and get his picture taken and upon ge ng Cri er’s permission, that li le Devil Moe was hi ng on all the ladies that were nearby, I don’t think Moe is going to have any issues with women when he gets older. There were a much larger number of ta oo booths at this year’s show as well and as I strolled through the aisles during the day almost all of them were doing a lot of work right there on site and there were always a number of people standing around as spectators watching as the ar sts did their thing. Every so o en when I needed to take a break from walking around I would return to the Mag booth and help hand out our latest issue to the public and also to have a chat with some of the folks who came to the show and I repeat what I have been saying for decades, there are lots of good people in the world, but the best are amongst those who have ride. There were a large number of clubs a ending the show as well, many more than we had seen at earlier shows we a ended this year, many of them well known and a few that are new to the motorcycle scene. Chuck and I hated to head back and even more so when we watched that as we came more east, the more snow do ed the landscape and the water levels got higher and faster and the temperature dropped quickly. Once we returned home it was me to start ge ng organized for the Month of May because as you may have read in my last month’s column, the Minister of Transport has officially proclaimed May as Motorcycle Awareness Month, something which The Riders Mag and The Cel c Brotherhood have been working hard on promo ng. It is important that riders across Ontario take the me and effort to help promote this ini a ve because it is becoming too o en that as riders we sit down somewhere and at least

On The Its riding me, its feature shoot me, thanks to all of you who responded to my call for bikes I have a lot of bikes on the list now. We are on the road doing our annual south western Ontario trip and planning several trips through the Niagara peninsula on both weekdays and weekends so heads up to all you folks on my list down that way your me is coming soon. If we are gonna do a trip east of Toronto this year in the fall we are gonna need some bikes out that way, I know I have a couple of Toronto bikes and one lady who we couldn’t schedule in on last year’s trip and one panhead that’s been on the list for a long me in the hands of our good friend Sissy and we are told when it’s done its gonna be awesome so we are looking forward to that. If there’s anyone out an hour or two east of Toronto who ever wanted to be on the mags feature bike or lady’s and their Harleys list send me your loca on contact info and a pic of your bike soon and we will get you set up, and for all of you in the tri city area we will plan a few trips up your way this summer to get you taken care of, we always have lots of bikes in that area as well. Ok now that the work is done, despite Bad Bobs opinion that my bikes aren’t ready to ride because they are not clean, hmmmmm..... Sorry Felix my bikes are riders but since you keep threatening to come over and clean both of them, they are both running, I have a bucket, so rags, mild soap and all that stuff so if you don’t have enough cleaning your bike come on over and give em a scrub. So all of you who ride with me on various events if Bad Bob comes through on his threat don’t have a freakin heart a ack when I show up at any of the upcoming events on a clean bike cause it’ll just be me riding a bike that was cleaned by Bob because I was embarrassing him with my filth, whatever happened to its a rider not a looker anyways? I have a couple of shout outs this month first to Lorrie at the Eagles Nest who underwent Cancer Surgery in March and Jim did call and tell me it went well. I called for a follow up and since he didn’t call me back I decided to stop into the shop on one of my frequent forays over the Rainbow Bridge and he says she’s doin good tolera ng the chemo and other stuff that goes along with it so I want her and Jim to know my family are pulling for her to kick cancer’s ass. Also a shout out to Josh from JD Cycles for that awesome Trike he hooked cri er up with, a trike has been his dream for a lot of years now as Cri er and I have been working together for many of the years of the mag and he has been talking about it for a lot of them. Josh gave me a p on charging the ba ery in my Road Glide as Marcel down at Niagara Choppers installed a bolt in the rear of the seat that I can’t seem to remove so ge ng the ba ery charged was a problem, but a heads up to Niagara Choppers, I am gonna stop by to have you loosen or remove that damn bolt. On a final note I finally made it out to Triple K’s new shop in Welland to drop off yet another of my collec on of vintage helmets to have the liner re-installed by expert upholsterer Tim, nice place ya got out there

Riding The Well the weather here sucks!!! As I write this April 15th there is an inch of snow on the ground from last night, very cold out and the dark clouds are just itchin’ to give us another blast of the white stuff....Why Mother Nature Why ??? At least there has been a few days in the last couple weeks that were worthy of a nice ride, I got to get out twice so far but each me I had to keep an eye on the weather, never knowing if the rain was going to fall, but the wind therapy was well worth it. Hopefully the days will be warm and sunny soon, I personally can’t wait. Well this month has been a li le more ac ve than past months, par es and events are again happening, and the summer weekend dates are quickly filling in, there are a ton of events going on this summer, and I know we can’t get to them all, but will try to a end as many as possible. I a ended the Chatham Boat R.V. and motorcycle and leisure show, to check out the bike displays, ge"ng there early, I found a good parking spot not far from the main entry, as I looked around I seen Precision Power Sports from Sarnia had a Kawasaki displayed along with some summer water toys, Tilbury Auto R.V. Yamaha also had a display, these guys have some very nice toy haulers and bike trailers are also avail, new and used. Then I saw Dukes Harley Davidsons display, very large and a great selec on of different model machines. The area was roomy, so you were not tripping over others and could get a good look at each bike; there were plenty of sales advisers on hand to answer any ques ons one might have. I spent some me cha"ng with Chris Hall, the general manager and he

was telling me about their upcoming V.O.N. ride, which is also supported by Biker TV....The event is Sunday June 8th, starts and finishes at Dukes, you need to register between 10 and 11 am, the ride will bring you thru Light House Cove, Tilbury and Wheatley, where we will stop at Robinsons Motorcycle then back to Dukes where there will be entertainment, food and drink so come on out and support a great cause, hope to see you there.

The Mags are now also available at the Montreal House in Chatham on Grand Avenue, where you can enjoy daily specials, home cooking, and nice cold beverages. There is a large outside deck to relax and soak up the sun, while being able to watch your motorcycle, The folks here are excited for summer and are willing to host a stop for poker runs, or events. Stop in and say hi. The Essex County Riders are in their 8th year of hos ng a bike night, last year the event had been moved over to Jakes Joint on Malden Rd, many fine folks come out to a end this Wednesday night social, beginning at 6pm star ng May 7th, outside on the very large pa o, there will be live entertainment, 50/50 draws and very generous door prizes, also avail is fine cooking , you can get a daily special they also have a homemade burger for $3 or you can have the chicken wing diner for $10 . This is always a fine night out. Go and enjoy!! Bob Williams Breakfast Ride, usually the first Sunday in April, but bad weather held it back a week to the 13th, Well I woke up, looked outside and was instantly disappointed in what the day was like, dark clouds, windy maybe I will just take my car. No, no! I can’t do that! There will be others there on their bikes! I have to ride. So out to the garage I go! Darn! My bike is behind a mess and a car in my way, Maybe take the car. No bike! So I move the car out of the way, clean up the mess of tools and equipment that I had le in front of the bike, finally rolling it out, giving her the once over to make sure things are good. No flats, everything good, then do the checklist; Wallet? Check. Keys? Check. Coat, vest, gloves? Triple check! , Ipod? Check (can’t forget the music)! I fire the bike up and off I go, taking the back roads I found myself going under the posted speed limit, just enjoying the ride and how nice it feels to be out again whoo hoo! We were to meet at the Husky restaurant and when I arrived there was already 30 or so bikes in the lot, I found myself a spot and parked the bike, right next to Bob Mundon’s 125 Honda that 2 yrs. a go with him on that bike and Charles Happy Fider on a BMW with over 400k on it rode from Key West to Prudhomme, Alaska and back , doing all 19000k in 21 days. By the way they also had to ride from Windsor to Key West

Verne was teeing off from the men’s tee. On his downswing, he realized that his wife, Joy, was teeing up on the woman’s tee directly in front of him. Unable to stop his swing, he nailed it, and hit her directly in the temple, killing her instantly. A few days later, Verne got a call from the coroner regarding her autopsy. Coroner: “Verne, your wife seemed to have died from blunt force-trauma to the head. You said you hit a golf ball and hit her in the temple, is that correct?” Verne: “Yes, sir, that’s correct.” Coroner: “Well, inexplicably I found a golf ball wedged up her ass.” Verne: “Was it a Titleist 3?” Coroner: “Yes, it was.” Verne: “That was my mulligan.” I was talking to a girl in the bar last night. She said, “If you lost a few pounds, got a shave, and got your hair cut, you’d look pre y good.” I thought about what she’d said for a moment and then replied, “If I did that, I’d be talking to your friends over there.” Sally was driving home from one of her business trips in Northern Arizona when she saw an elderly Navajo woman

The old woman just sat silently, looking intently at everything she saw, studying every li le detail, un l she no ced a brown bag on the seat next to Sally. “What’s in the bag?” asked the old woman. Sally looked down at the brown bag and said, “It’s a bo le of wine. I got it for my husband.” The Navajo woman was silent for another moment or two.
