UAE rainfall breaks 24-year record The UAE is breaking the record for the most amount of rainfall to hit the country since 1996. And it’s still accumulating. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) said that as of 7.23am on Sunday, the highest amount of rainfall from 9-12 January was reported in Al Shakla, Al Ain, with 190.4 mm. According to the NCM, the heaviest amount of rain that fell between Thursday and Sunday morning was recorded in the eastern region of the UAE, especially in Mazayd with 172.4 mm, Damtha with 172.2 mm, Al Foah with 156.8 mm, and Falaj Al Muallah with 152 mm. The last time the UAE witnessed such vast amounts of rain was 24 years ago in Khor Fakkan, which saw 144 mm of accumulated rainfall. Other areas that were also badly affected by the strong rainstorm were Sweihan and Al Shwaib with 126 mm of rain, Al Arad with 123.6 mm, and Al Raknah with 114.6 mm. In a statement, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development announced that it has allocated 20 task forces to monitor the situation of roads across the country, and is ready to respond to any developments may arise as a result of damages caused by the rains. “Various regions of the country have witnessed unusually heavy rains, which caused rain water to accumulate on the main roads and cause diversions on some intersections. The Ministry of Infrastructure Development, in coordination with local authorities, have deployed 20 teams to monitor the roads,” said the federal authority. “The teams have been assigned to deal with three main tasks, which include the drainage of waterlogged roads, removing mud and heavy debris, as well as repairing roads that may have been damaged by the rain,” it added.

Al Ain Zoo leads efforts to develop Dama gazelle Conservation Strategy Al Ain Zoo participated in developing and publishing the Dama Gazelle Conservation Strategy (20192028), after a conservation planning workshop hosted by Al Ain Zoo in 2018. Delegates from government agencies, NGO’s research institutes and representatives from ex situ community participated in this workshop for the first time. The workshop mainly aimed to review and update the objectives of the Dama gazelle conservation review published in 2014. In addition to identify and agree on actions to reduce the extinction risk of Dama Gazelle in situ and ex situ. The workshop introduced a series of recommendations, the most important of which was updating the latest information about the Dama gazelle’s numbers and location in its natural habitat and procedures from range countries to protect the species from extinction. It also discussed the opportunities for reintroduction, the potential locations identified for the release and the results of the latest genetic research studies. Additionally, the workshop looked into the training requirements and specialised technical courses required by participants in the areas of field research, animal relocation and veterinary research. Hessa Ahmed Al Qahtani, Unit Head Conservation Programs Development, said: “Following the steps and vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founder of Al Ain Zoo, we strive to protect one of the most endangered antelope species in the world by participating and leading in various strategies together with local, regional and global partners that will contribute to saving this species from extinction.” There are currently over 80 Dama gazelle in Al Ain Zoo, of two sub-species the Addra and Mhorr. The Dama Gazelle is critically endangered and less than 100 individuals remain in the wild.

UAE residents now have a safe and legal channel to directly support impacted wildlife and nature in Australia Emirates Nature-WWF has set up a fundraising channel, via YallaGive a local crowdfunding platform, through which the population of the UAE can support the nature and wildlife of Australia. Funds raised through this campaign will support an emergency appeal from WWF Australia who have established a $30 million Australian Wildlife and Nature Recovery Fund.

of VIVO Fitness, Thomas Kinsey said, “The team at VIVO Fitness here in Dubai and Australia have had family and friends directly affected by the fire. This is a cause that we feel compelled to support. Every little support counts.” General Manager of Bidi Bondi, Dal Jones said, “We are so grateful for the support and efforts given by both the teams at Emirates Nature-WWF and YallaGive to help make this happen. This catastrophe has impacted every Australian and we are proud to be associated with a fundraising campaign that allows UAE residents and companies to support, promote and donate to such an important cause.”

The Fund will deliver: immediate wildlife response and recovery at scale, nature restoration for the benefit of wildlife and people and, the future proofing of Australia, including climate change adaptation and mitigation projects. Emirates Nature-WWF is calling out to all UAE residents – people and businesses - to help support the appeal.

Australia is in dire need of our support. UAE residents wishing to support wildlife and nature impacted by the bushfires can donate by visiting Yalla Give.

Currently, more than 10 million hectares of Australian land has been affected, at least 25 people have lost their lives and over 2,000 homes have been lost. In addition to this, an estimated 1.25 billion native animals have been injured or killed including species such as kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, kookaburras, cockatoos and honeyeaters.

Emirates Red Crescent is running the ‘MATES HELP MATES’ campaign, supported by Expo 2020 Dubai, which focuses on humanitarian efforts – funds donated online at www.emiratesrc.ae/en/donate.aspx will help support those affected by the bushfires

Laila Mostafa Abdullatif, Director General of Emirates Nature-WWF said, “The Emirates Nature-WWF team and I are deeply saddened by the loss of life in the bushfire tragedy gripping Australia. Our hearts go out to the families who been affected. The fires have also been devastating for Australia’s wildlife and wild places, as massive areas of native bushland, forests and parks have been scorched. By supporting this appeal and contributing to the Australian Wildlife and Nature Recovery Fund , residents and businesses of the UAE can legally support the rescue and restoration efforts, required at scale in Australia, and we would like to thank those businesses and individuals who have already done so.” Businesses from around the UAE have already volunteered, in collaboration with Emirates Nature, to take part in this important initiative, including Dubai-based VIVO Fitness and Palm Jumeirah-based, Bidi Bondi. The Sixth Annual Women’s Heritage Walk Launches in Abu Dhabi First Ever Men’s Heritage Walk Announced Organizers of the annual Women’s Heritage Walk officially announced the sixth edition of the event and the first edition of the Men’s Heritage Walk in October 2019 in Abu Dhabi. The Walks are five-day cultural treks from Abu Dhabi to Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates. Both follow a 120 km route that recreates the seasonal journey made by Emirati tribes from the coast to the inland oasis, where families would traditionally join the date harvest and enjoy the cooler climate of Al Ain during the hottest months of the year. The upcoming Women’s Heritage Walk will take place from January 31 – February 4, 2020 and the Men’s Heritage Walk will take place from February 7-11, 2020. In only five years, the Women’s Heritage Walk established itself as a unique multi-faceted event focusing on four pillars of culture and heritage, health and wellness, strength and leadership, and community building. This event is known in both the UAE and around the world. Up to 70 women from diverse backgrounds complete the journey each year with the support of each other and a passionate team of organizers.

Over the years, the community asked about the possibility of offering this same life-affirming experience for men. This year, with the support of the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation, organizers have confirmed that men will have the opportunity to retrace this journey through history. They will be immersed in the culture and heritage of the United Arab Emirates and will connect more deeply with themselves and each other. In the lead-up to the Walks, male and female Walkers will receive specialized training from certified desert guides and access to a range of social events. The event package includes up to ten weeks of training, five days and four nights of unforgettable adventure in the desert, in addition to all meals and accommodation at authentic Bedouin campsites. A dedicated ambulance, support vehicles, and professional campsite management teams are also on hand each day to ensure the safety and comfort of participants. With the support of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, daily cultural events will be organized to help Walkers learn about the traditions of the United Arab Emirates. Is career fulfillment another uncertainty in your life? Frustration at work is bad enough. Frustration with all other aspects of life are doubly worse. So, should you find yourself at work feeling let down, dejected, dissatisfied, not credible, bored, not trusted, disconnected, pushed aside, stale, stagnant or any other negative emotions that deplete, please, please do stay in your corporate role, at least for the time being! Yes, you read that correctly! As work is one small slice of your life, reactionary work-based decisions can have far-reaching and unwanted ripple effects across your entire life

dreams were within reach for us all, career fulfillment would neither be appreciated nor valued. ‘Consequential curiosity’ encourages ongoing commitment to exploration, yet in the context of cause and effect. For example, some love both walking in the outdoors and pets, and curiosity allowed the service of ‘dog walkers’ to be created, as love for both only provided positive effects. Some are fascinated by the fusion of chemicals, and love to explore yet it would become fairly evident that as a career it could have unthinkable longterm effects if it was performed in a haphazard way.

There are two common reactions when people find their work unfulfilling. Firstly, some choose to ‘jump ship’ into entrepreneurship, with inadequate understanding about the commitment that takes. Secondly, others lose hope and believe unconditionally that there is no chance for change and boredom is ‘their lot’ forever. Is it any wonder these people lose hope, shut down and basically throw their future away?

So back to the words that likely caused you discomfort earlier in this article; when frustrated, we suggested you to ‘stay in the corporate world - at least for now’. The purpose for doing so is to become skilled and equipped with less reactivity and a lot more responsiveness. Responses are so much more constructive as they consider the ultimate effect. Responses allow us to consider the environment, the people, the cause and effect and importantly, the longer term impact.

The reason we do not recommend either of these strategies is the inevitable longterm consequences; both of these will most often end with the person feeling bitter, bent and broken. Once the thrill of having time to yourself wears off and bills mount up, or the ‘game’ of attending work and doing nothing is replaced by a soul-destroying lack of self-worth and contribution, there would really be little to be excited about. Our suggested alternative strategy of ‘staying in your corporate job – at least for now’ allows more-informed decisions that will support success over time.

Consider: should I stay or should I go? Reactions to that question might be a yes or a no yet either way, the answer will be cemented in ‘the now’. That will let you feel either freedom or ongoing frustration; nothing more, nothing less. Responses to that question might include:

This alternative strategy aims to convert this lack of excitement into a great opportunity for ‘consequential curiosity’. After all, keeping one eye on the future while working with the present should help eradicate longterm negative consequences. Being forever mindful that every choice and action will always have some type of impact should help steer decisions and priorities towards those that serve us best in the long run as things do take time to manifest. Human beings show up in their best form in the face of challenge and if instant career

if I choose to go, what will I do with the time I will have, how will I move forward and not find myself in the same situation or what levels of energy will I need to reposition myself, or what support do I have for the repositioning time, or what is the availability for the resources I will require

if I choose to stay, what coping mechanism will I need and how accessible are they to me currently, or what is the ultimate purpose for time ‘under sufferance’ or how can I redirect my efforts into better results to reduce longterm suffering or with whom should I surround myself, to name but a few.

Career fulfillment is the right of everyone who invests in it. Know where you are heading and acutely watch how your current actions either help or hinder your progress towards that. After all, with cause and effect being present at every moment, what could be the consequence of expecting career fulfilment in return for no investment? Debbie Nicol, managing director of ‘business en motion’, builds org systems, frameworks and cultures through the services of training, coaching and solutions, helping move businesses and leaders ahead through change. ‘learning en motion’, a niche brand of ‘business en motion’ is a contemporary response for those leaders who feel frustrated in the workplace, enabling them to be part of the solution.

Dakar Rally 2020 - Carlos Sainz wins the Dakar for the third time and presents MINI with its fifth overall victory Carlos Sainz (ESP) and his co-driver Lucas Cruz (ESP) have won the Rally Dakar for the third time, having previously triumphed in 2010 and 2018. In doing so, they presented MINI with its fifth overall victory at the iconic endurance rally. For MINI and MINI Motorsport partner X-raid, this was the first success since their winning run together, which lasted from 2012 to 2015. Munich. Carlos Sainz (ESP) and his co-driver Lucas Cruz (ESP) have won the Rally Dakar for the third time, having previously triumphed in 2010 and 2018. In doing so, they presented MINI with its fifth overall victory at the iconic endurance rally. For MINI and MINI Motorsport partner X-raid, this was the first success since their winning run together, which lasted from 2012 to 2015. The Spanish pair, in the MINI John Cooper Works Buggy, finished 6:21 minutes ahead of last year’s winner Nasser Al-Attiyah (QAT) after roughly 7,500 kilometres through Saudi Arabia, which was hosting the Dakar for the first time.

Seven of the nine MINI crews that started the rally reached the finish in Al-Quiddia (KSA), four of them in the top ten. Orlando Terranova (ARG) and Bernardo ‘Ronnie’ Graue (ARG) finished in the top three on three days on their way to sixth place overall in the four-wheel drive MINI JCW Rally. Local favourite Yasir Seaidan (KSA) and his co-driver Alexey Kuzmich (RUS) were ninth and finished an excellent second on the closing stage. Jakub ‘Kuba’ Przygonski (POL) and co-driver Timo Gottschalk (GER) had their hopes of a top result dashed on the opening day when a technical issue resulted in them losing six hours. They eventually finished in 19th place, 8:35.18 seconds off the lead.

Dakar record winner Stéphane Peterhansel (FRA) and his co-driver Paulo Fiuza (POR) finished third, 9:58 minutes behind Sainz and Cruz, to round off an impressive performance from the two MINI JCW Buggies. The two MINI JCW Buggy crews each won four stages, while MINI vehicles went fastest on a total of nine of the twelve days. Vaidotas Zala (LTU) / Saulius Jurgelenas (LTU), in a MINI JCW Rally, won the very first Dakar stage on Arabian soil on the opening day.

MINI vehicles topped the overall standings after every one of the twelve legs at the 40th staging of the Dakar Rally. Zala and Jurgelenas got the ball rolling with victory on the opening stage, after which Terranova and Graue took the overall lead on day two. Sainz and Cruz claimed their first stage win on the third leg. That victory took them to the top of the overall standings – a position they held right through to the finish. Quotes from the 2020 Dakar Rally: Carlos Sainz “I am very, very happy. So much hard work, physical training and test work with the team has gone into getting this result. The race was fantastic for us drivers, but you had to work very hard, right from day one. It is hard to imagine, but it was a full-throttle rally from the word go. Right now, I just want to enjoy the success.”

Stéphane Peterhansel “That was a bit of an odd Dakar for me. We decided at the last minute to change co-drivers, and then went straight into the race with Paulo Fiuza. I am happy with the result. We finished third, which was more than we would have expected at the start. The guys out in front were very quick and did not make any mistakes with the navigation. We did as well as we could have done.” Bernd Körber – Head of MINI “On behalf of the entire MINI family, I would like to congratulate Carlos Sainz, Lucas Cruz and the X-raid team on winning the 2020 Dakar Rally. At the same time, I also congratulate Stéphane Peterhansel and Paulo Fiuza on their podium finish. Unfortunately, this success is overshadowed by the tragic accidents involving Paulo Gonçalves and Edwin Straver, which have affected us all deeply. We wish the relatives every strength and Edwin Straver all the best for his recovery. Our drivers and the X-raid team performed superbly in Saudi Arabia, which was hosting the rally for the first time, and they were rewarded for the hard work they put in during preparations for the event. The MINI John Cooper Works Buggy proved to be fast and reliable on the very demanding and unfamiliar terrain. The fifth overall victory for MINI at the Dakar, and the first since 2015, is a very special moment for us all.” Sven Quandt – CEO X-raid “We are absolutely overwhelmed by this superb team result. We did not expect to finish first and third. It has been a fantastic race, with many battles for the lead. Carlos and Stéphane did an outstanding job. The performance of our MINI JCW fleet was absolutely top-notch. We are delighted to have finally won another Dakar with our MINIs after so many years of trying. To have four MINIs in the top ten and seven in the top 20 shows how reliable we are. Thank you to our staff and to everyone who has believed in us and supported us – particularly MINI and our partners.”

Medieval knights, charging horses and courtly tales from the Islamic East and Christian West displayed side by side at Louvre Abu Dhabi In a rare comparative study, Louvre Abu Dhabi’s upcoming exhibition Furusiyya: The Art of Chivalry between East and West (19 February – 30 May 2020) will display objects of medieval chivalric culture from the Islamic and Christian worlds. The immersive presentation will encompass over 130 artefacts, from medieval armours, objects related to riding and battle, as well as illuminated manuscripts depicting chivalric scenes. Particular attention was paid to the values of the medieval Knights. Courage, faith, loyalty or honor can thus be seen as the anchor of a common culture, present in both Islamic East and Christian West.

East and West is the perfect exhibition to take place at Louvre Abu Dhabi. Our home city has always been a gateway between East and West and is a natural stage for this exploration of a key moment in Arab history and its cross-cultural exchanges with the Western World. The many international partners for the show – be it lenders or scientific experts – highlight the importance of this subject within the academic community and we are incredibly grateful to Musée de Cluny, musée national du Moyen ge, and our partners from New York, Dublin, Paris and beyond, who came together to make this show a first-of-its-kind.” The curators of the exhibition, Dr. Elisabeth Taburet-Delahaye, Dr. Carine Juvin, and Michel Huynh commented: “The art of elite horsemen, called furūsiyya in the East and chivalry in the West, was born around the 8th-9th centuries, drawing from several common sources. The two cultures forged multiple links throughout the Middle Ages, many of which are still unknown today. Today, it is not only the objects related to battle, but also the values and ambitions, the substitutes and activities beyond the field of combat, the epics, novels and poems, combining stories of prowess and love, which are fascinating to compare. This show will not hide differences, but rather observe encounters between these two different cultures”.

Presented across three sections, artefacts on show originate from across the Middle East, including Iraq, Iran, Egypt and Syria, to the French and Germanic states in Europe, covering the period from the early 11th to the 16th century. The show will allow visitors to discover similarities of knightly traditions in these different parts of the medieval world and spotlight the extraordinary cultural exchanges originating from key meeting points such as Southern Spain, Sicily and Syria. In keeping with the theme of Louvre Abu Dhabi’s current cultural season Changing Societies, the exhibition highlights key artworks and artefacts across different times and cultures. The show aims to visualise how historic circumstances have contributed to their production or, in turn, how these works now act as a witness to historic changes in the cultures that produced them.

Dr. Souraya Noujaim, Scientific, Curatorial and Collections Management Director at Louvre Abu Dhabi added: “This is a unique and original exhibition, bringing together medieval chivalric cultures of East and West. It builds on Louvre Abu Dhabi’s seasonal programme of exhibitions, evoking important moments in the history of art and society and further develops the connection between the permanent galleries and our temporary exhibitions.”

Held in partnership with Musée de Cluny, musée national du Moyen ge in Paris, and Agence FranceMuséums, Furusiyya: The Art of Chivalry between East and West is curated by Chief Curator Dr. Elisabeth Taburet-Delahaye, former Director of Musée de Cluny, musée national du Moyen ge, alongside Co-Curators Dr. Carine Juvin, Curator of the Department of Islamic Art at Musée du Louvre and Michel Huynh, Head Curator at Musée de Cluny, musée national du Moyen ge.

Thanks to the generous loans of the Musée de Cluny, musée national du Moyen ge and ten other prestigious international institutions, the exhibition offers an innovative synthesis between two worlds that had never been compared. Objects and images which have been carefully chosen are taking up the challenge to tell a secular story, which is not only

one of confrontations but also of encounters and shared cultures.” Upon entering the exhibition, visitors will be presented with two monumental horse armours, Louvre Abu Dhabi’s spectacular Ottoman Horse Armour from the late 15th century, installed alongside a European Horse and Knight Armour from the first quarter of the 16th century, on loan from Musée de l’armée. Both aim to immerse the visitors into the key themes throughout this exhibition – knights and their horse as well as the art of battle and knightly culture. Visualising the emergence and development of furusiyya in the East and its early encounters with chivalric culture in the West, the first section of the exhibition traces the emergence of this cultural phenomenon back to antiquity. Artefacts such as the cameo from the collections of Bibliothèque Nationale de France depicting the Fight between Emperor Valerian and King Shapur from as early as 260 A.D. are symbolic for the theme of the exhibition in showcasing the encounter of an Eastern and a Western warrior. A Horseman’s bowl on loan from Musée du Louvre from ca. 10th or 11th century Iran – one of the earliest depictions of an Islamic horseman - highlight key motifs such as the armed man on horseback, employment by a king as well as ‘knightly’ values such as courage, strength and service. The second section of the exhibition will allow viewers to discover objects around knightly combats and the art of battle, such

as attack and defence armaments and equipment worn by the warrior’s horse. Educational manuscripts on war and fighting techniques were common in both cultures and the juxtaposition of an Arabic Kitāb al-makhzūn jāmiʿ al-funūn (The treasure that combines all arts) from Bibliothèque Nationale de France with a French Combat Treaty from Musée de Cluny, musée national du Moyen ge, allow visitors to understand similarities and differences of approaches to fighting and battle. A variety of battle helmets and knightly armour from the Ottoman Empire, Egypt and Europe, alongside several depictions of battling warriors in illuminated manuscripts and carved reliefs, will contribute to the visitor’s understanding of knightly fashion at war. The Turban Helmet of Sultan Bajazet II from Musée de l’Armée, shown alongside a Western Bascinet from Musée de Cluny, musée national du Moyen ge, give an idea of the different modes of defence, adapted to different arms and fighting techniques, across both cultures. The final section of the exhibition will trace the development of a knightly culture and their similarities in the Western and Islamic worlds. From pastimes such as falconry, jousting, horseback parades, to hippology (the study of horses) and chess, objects on show will highlight their cultural touchpoints between East and West. Beethoven continues to make his mark in the world of new age entertainment Ludwig van Beethoven’s music has been delighting audiences for hundreds of years, and will continue to captivate music fans when his famous 9th Symphony is performed live by the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra at the du Arena in Abu Dhabi on February 5 as part of the Abu Dhabi Classics 2020 series. Over 100 musicians and 70 vocalists will combine on the night to perform one of the world’s best-known pieces from the classical music canon. While some experts can immediately tell the difference between Beethoven and other great composers, we can all identify classical pieces that the German composer Beethoven wrote, feeling the nostalgia every time we hear these pieces as they evoke memories of blockbuster movies or pop songs we grew up listening to. Beethoven’s 9th Symphony has featured in no less than seven films, including Stanley Kubrick’s 1971 dystopian classic A Clockwork Orange and Dead Poets Society, the 1989 coming of age drama featuring Robin Williams, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, as well as Bruce Willis action flick Die Hard (1988) and even Jim Carrey’s goofball comedy Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994). The wide variation in movie genre that adapted Beethoven’s 9th Symphony highlights the timeless message and values the German composer covered when he released his last Symphony in 1824.

Away from the big screen, Beethoven’s works have featured in contemporary music, with hip hop artists Wu Tang Clan sampling Sonata No. 8 Pathétique in Impossible (1997) and rapper Nas using the Für Elise in I Can (2002), with British electronic dance duo The Chemical Brothers incorporating the Piano Sonata No. 26 in E-flat Major for The Salmon Dance (2007). Billy Joel’s This Night (1983) uses the same melody as Beethoven’s Sonata no.8 Pathétique while the late, great Beatles legend John Lennon also revealed that Abbey Road track Because was put together after listening to the Moonlight Sonata with Yoko Ono. Tickets for the below events are on sale exclusively from www.ticketmaster.ae and Virgin Megastores across the UAE. For further information please visit www.abudhabimusic.ae and www.dctabudhabi.ae.

Symphony No.9 is not the sole Beethoven piece to find its way into modern day cinemas. His symphony No3 featured on Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation, while Symphony No.5 accompanies John Hughes’ teen drama The Breakfast Club (1985), as well as Academy award-winning romantic drama Howards End (1992), comedy Goldmember (2002) and Charlie Brown and the gang in The Peanuts Movie (2015). Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No.8 has featured in The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) and Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) among others while Für Elise, which was published 40 years after his death in 1867, features in a wide variety of movies – from Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989), through to Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained (2012), Patch Adams (1998) and cult horror Rosemary’s Baby (1968). In addition, the cinema industry celebrated the life and talent of Beethoven in Immortal Beloved of 1994. Director Bernard Rose sampled some of the greatest pieces that Beethoven produced throughout his life to complement the plot of the biography film.

RACE PREPARATION Making the call •

Make the decision. Decide you are going to race, this is always the first and most important step. Set a goal, pick a race & register. • Set a goal on why you want to run and what you would like to accomplish from racing. It could be anything from the experience, challenging yourself, run a faster time, see how fast you can run or simply as an active social activity, just to run with family and friends. Whatever it is know your why... Once you have a goal, it's easier to decide on the distances, dates or type of races you would like to participate in, decide on your race and get registered. Practice & plan • Make sure you get some training in to prepare for your race, go out a couple of times in the week for some running training just to condition your body and mind for the upcoming race. Training duration and frequency will mostly depend of the type of race, as well as your daily routine, work, family, etc...so it is important to have a training plan that easily fits into your daily routine and you may have to be as adaptable as possible. We would recommend 20-45 mins of running 2-3 times a week for a 5km race. The Day Before • Rest well and eat well...you will need to get in more carbohydrates to boost up your energy reserves, get sufficient rest, and stay hydrated. • Get your race clothes ready, ideally this should be clothes you are comfortable running in and have used them in your practice runs...this is not the time to experiment on new shoes and attire, stick your tried and tested outfits and most importantly should be comfortable.

Race Day • Get to the venue nice early to sign in and collect your race pack if there are any provided. Do some warm and stretches in preparation for your run. Stay upbeat & positive!!! • •

Hydrate, before, during and after the race. Don’t eat anything heavy within two hours of the race. While different meals work for different runners, as a general rule of thumb, your meal should contain mostly carbs, a little protein, and a limited amount of fiber and fat. Here are a few tried-andtrue prerace meals: a toasted bagel with peanut butter and a banana; an energy bar with a cup of fruit; or oatmeal topped with berries and a handful of nuts.

TOP TIP • Stick to your plan...manage your pace and listen to your body. YOUR RACE, YOUR PACE. Relax and enjoy the run!!! Simba Chikona Performance Coach | Fitness Edge™

A DIGITAL DETOX CAN SAVE YOUR FAMILY ‘Let me play one more game before I sleep mum!’, your child says for the 13425th time that week. It’s getting really exhausting for you and your partner to continue to battle your child at every angle, with any kind of device that is available to him. You and your partner are constantly at your wits end on parenting through the digital age, as one of you feels like a child should have access to devices and phrases such as ‘technology is the future!’ and ‘our child will fall back if they don’t know how to use it’. While the other partner, believes wholeheartedly in the theory of learning through experiences and real life interactions, and phrases that begin with ‘when I was younger we never had this..’ or ‘my parents never let me have tv time because of…’ are also very commonly discussed.

determined as the average 2 year old needs 10-12 hours of sleep for important developmental functions. So we clearly have an issue. But what is the solution. The key word to survive this epidemic is BALANCE. With everything else in life, if not balanced well, we cannot survive it. Here are some tips (treatment) for curing your childs’ technology addiction. 1.

2.

With the fast growing rate of access to different types of technology devices for normal households, families are catapulted into a series of actions that we are yet to analyse the effects that it may have on their children. Some research conducted by Childwise in 2015 has shown that, children from the ages of 5-16 spend on average 6.5 hours screen time a day, with teenage boys spending the most time on screens – an average of 8 hours a day. This has been said to have significantly increased. So

3.

4.

In a recent article punished by ‘Aha Parenting’, Dr Laura Markham says; “The earlier we introduce screens, the more it affects the child’s brain development and the more likely they will have trouble managing their addiction to screens and technology later in life.” This is a clear indication that a young child’s integral development is at a high risk and could trouble them severely, later in life.

5.

What is even more surprising is the different areas of a child, that screen addiction affects. For example, a recent survey found that sleep deprivation increased with age, from 57% among 2-4-year-olds to 65% among 8-11-year olds. This is

Set a good example - It all starts with the parents. If you’d like your child to spend less time on devices, then you have to show them how to do just this. Children learn better from actions rather than speech. Create time limits and a routine for the usage of these devices. Just like all else, it’s an activity that has to have boundarie. The recommended amount of time spent on devices is no more than 1 hour a day by Pediatricians from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Have a strong focus on “real world” fun activities. Children cannot ask for what they know nothing about. Have a strong emphasis in your household on things such as; outdoor games or sports, quality time with friends, travelling and exploring the world, and meeting new people. No technology in bedrooms- This should be a staple rule in every household. In order for a child to completely switch off and get a good night’s sleep, they need not be disturbed and have access to screens as they are dozing off. Create an open and honest space for your children to discuss any questions they may have pertaining to the online world. If they are experiencing cyber bullying, or have seen something online which is scary for them, they need to feel comfortable to discuss this with you, and so try your best to make them feel that you are not their enemy and only want the best for them.

All in all, your kids will most likely protest your interference with their unhealthy love for technology, but remember this is a normal reaction. Try your best to be consistent in your rule setting, be patient, calm and endearing. And most importantly, always reassure your love for your child especially when they are not accustomed to the new changes. And, finally, remember the key word - balance. This will clarify whether or not you and your family are on the right track.

One year on: Abu Dhabi Birdathon’s Flamingos Return to Al Wathba Wetland Reserve The Abu Dhabi Birdathon, an initiative organised by the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) and Etihad Airways to celebrate Sheikh Zayed’s legacy of environmental sustainability, has seen positive results one year on. The initiative, which tagged 10 Greater Flamingos with satellite transmitters to track their movement and migration and were assigned to leading Abu Dhabi entities, aimed to raise awareness around wetland conservation and the importance of protected areas.

Asia and today, all of them are at Al Wathba Wetland Reserve.

Of the 10 birds tagged as part of the programme, five had migrated across the Arabian Gulf to spend the summer in parts of Central

The flamingos were tagged and released from Al Wathba Wetland Reserve and the Bul Syayeef Marine Protected Area in Abu Dhabi in November of last year. The flamingos migrated to different areas including Iran, Dubai’s Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, while some remained within Abu Dhabi Emirate. Below is an update, one year later, on each of the flamingos:

Reserve on November 2, 2019. The flamingo assigned to ADNOC, covered nearly 7800 km from the time of tagging to its return back to Al Wathba Wetland Reserve on November 2, 2019. The flamingo assigned to Abu Dhabi Police was one of the first birds to migrate across the Arabian Gulf and thus the winner of the Abu Dhabi Birdathon. It also migrated and spent the summer in Bakhtegan National Park in Central Iran before returning to Abu Dhabi on October 22, 2019 and covered a total of nearly 7000 km.

The flamingo assigned to First Abu Dhabi Bank, named Fabingo, left Al Wathba Wetland Reserve in April 2018 to reach Maharlu Lake in Iran where it spent the summer before starting its autumn migration on September 3, 2019. It reached Bul Syayeef Marine Protected Area on September 16, 2019 and covered over 3100 km, during the entire journey. The flamingo assigned to Etihad Airways, named Amelia, which travelled to Qeshm in Iran from Al Siniah island in Umm Al Qaiwain and covered nearly1700 km. The bird crossed the Gulf on 14th June, only to return back on 16th June and spent much of the summer in Ras Al Khor before returning to Al Wathba in late August. The remaining five birds didn’t migrate and spent the entire summer in Abu Dhabi, mostly in are-

as where they were tagged and showing some local movements. EAD has been tagging and tracking the movement of the Greater Flamingo through its globally-recognised satellite tracking programme since 2005. Each winter, thousands of flamingo return to the UAE, with nearly 4,000 spending the season at the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, which has become the only site in the Arabian Gulf where these birds breed regularly. The first Ramsar site in Abu Dhabi, Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is home to over 260 birds besides the flamingo, 320 invertebrates, 35 plants, 16 reptiles and 10 mammal species. In 2019, a record number of 714 flamingo chicks hatched at the reserve – the highest number ever recorded so far. The site, which is a

Ramsar site and also features on the Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), welcomes thousands of visitors every year to witness the unique concentration of the Greater Flamingo. Al Wathba Wetland Reserve has now re-opened to visitors for the winter season from Thursdays and Saturdays from 8 am – 4 pm (last entry at 2 pm). Yoga:the habit of a lifetime

by Wendy @ Love Yoga UAE

If you pay any attention to yoga on Instagram, you could easily be forgiven for believing that yoga these days is all about skinny, bendy, twenty-somethings cavorting in bikinis on sunny beaches. They can’t help being skinny, bendy and twenty-something and we wish them well with that but be assured that yoga is for EVERY BODY, regardless of age, size, gender or physical challenges. Right here in Al Ain, you can begin your yoga journey while you are still in diapers with classes for mums, dads and babes to practice together. In fact, some babies are yogis while still in mum’s tummy with antenatal yoga classes becoming increasingly popular in the city. Breathing techniques and strategies for relaxation and concentration are helping Al Ain mums have safe, happy, healthy deliveries. Dads sometimes need help taking a few good deep breaths as well! Study after study across the world continues to uncover just how beneficial the practice of yoga, meditation and mindfulness can be for children of all ages. It can be a fun way to move your body and get fitter but it also teaches children to find space and peace in their sometimes too-busy lives. Work towards sitting in silence with your child for the same length of time in minutes as their age in years. Yoga also promotes self-acceptance and kindness towards others, so when it is practiced in

schools, teachers report significant improvements in behavior and peer-to-peer relationships. Some schools are even replacing detention with yoga and meditation and seeing really positive results. And more and more teenagers are finding their way on to a yoga mat. There they find practical ways to cope with life’s stresses, such as exams, friendships and relationships, hormones or a body that sometimes feels like it’s out of control. Teen yoga sessions are always lots of fun with lots of laughter and a great way to make new friends and feel good about being in your own skin. Let’s not forget to mention the chaps! From the rugby pitch to the golf course to the weights room in the gym, the guys are getting on board with yoga now all the top athletes testify to how it helps your performance, focus and endurance, AND prevent and recover from injuries. ‘BROGA’ (yoga for the bros) tends to be a more stripped down stretch and breathe session. The bros are often surprised by just how challenging some yoga poses can be. Increasingly yoga is being prescribed by doctors to alleviate the symptoms of a wide range of conditions and illnesses. Most of us are familiar with yoga therapy for lower back pain but did you know it can significantly improve the quality of life for sufferers of MS and Parkinsons? Add to that studies by endocrinologists into the positive effects of yoga and controlled breathing on our mys36

terious hormones and nervous systems and encouraging results from research into yoga for depression and addiction. You can continue your journey with yoga right into your very old age. Hopefully it will keep you agile and light of heart but if you have to slow down (or sit down) you don’t have to stop practicing. ‘Chair yoga’ offers plenty of ways to move through a full range of motion while sitting in your chair (also a great option for those of us who spend too many hours sitting at a desk). And if you need some inspiration, check out Tao Porchon-Lynch on Youtube, at 101 years old, she’s the world’s oldest yoga teacher, still teaching and still practicing! So you are never too old and it is never too late. Right now, this moment, is exactly the perfect time to begin or come back to yoga. Here in Al Ain you will find a huge variety of styles and teachers and hopefully something to suit everybody. If you’d like to find out more about yoga in Al Ain check out Yoga Oasis on Facebook or drop me a line on whatsapp: 0567539778. And save the date for Yogafest Al Ain (March 6th 2020 in Al Jahilli Park), a whole day of entirely free, family-friendly yoga and other activities to bring our community together and help us all to live happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives.

Oasis Hospital renamed as KANAD Hospital Abu Dhabi: The Oasis Hospital in Al Ain has been renamed Kanad Hospital in appreciation of the efforts of Dr Pat and Marian Kennedy, the hospital’s founders, who started providing healthcare for infants in the city of Al Ain in the 1960s. The renaming done under the directives of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, coincides with the UAE’s values of tolerance and coexistence. The hospital’s new branding was launched by Shaikh Hazza Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Undersecretary in the Ruler’s Representative’s Office in Al Ain, as part of a ceremony organised in the presence of Dr Mugheer Khamis Al-Khaili, Chairman of Department of Community Development – Abu Dhabi, Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Hamed, Chairman of Department of Health, Abdullah Mohammed Al Nuaimi, Acting Executive Director of the National Tolerance Programme and the family of Dr Kennedy. The attendees toured the Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Majlis, which is a prominent landmark in the city of Al Ain, located directly near the hospital entrance. The Majlis includes an exhibition of rare photos that highlight the history of Al Ain and the stages of the development the city has undergone in various sectors, especially health care. Kanad Hospital has a special place within the Al Ain community as it was the first healthcare centre of The Source

its kind in Abu Dhabi. The hospital, which is preparing to celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2020, has witnessed six decades of the city, the birth of tens of thousands of its children and important stages of history and evolution of healthcare and wellbeing in the emirate. The hospital now offers world-class medical services in all areas of healthcare, thanks to the continuous support of the wise leadership. Since its establishment, the hospital has gone through several developmental stages with the support of the wise leadership, most notably in 2015 with the opening of the new building equipped with the latest medical equipment and facilities. In the hospital, pediatricians see approximately 9,000 children per month in the outpatient section. Dr Pat and Marian Kennedy worked in Al Ain until 1975. Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Hamed, Chairman of Department of Health, underscored that the UAE’s wise leadership is carrying forward the ethos that was espoused by the founding father the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his legacy. Since the birth of the union, the late Sheikh Zayed prioritised the provision of a robust healthcare system that would serve the UAE’s community and ensure their well-being. He pointed out that naming the hospital after Dr Pat and Marian Kennedy is in line with the leadership’s keenness to honour and appreciate such important people whose valuable efforts continue to serve the healthcare sector and contribute to its progress until this 38

day. Alex Jankulowski, CEO of Kanad Hospital, said the generation currently working in the hospital is fully aware of the achievements and sacrifices made by those who have served the Al Ain community over the past six decades. “Their accomplishments interest and motivate us daily to preserve their legacy and keep pace with the bright future of the Al Ain community, which is supported and cared for by the wise leadership, to whom we owe our gratitude, and we thank the Abu Dhabi government for choosing to honour the Kennedy family” he added. Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi was born here The story goes that in 1960, Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan invited the Kennedys to set up a facility to provide healthcare services for newborns and infants, given that the newborns at the time were susceptible to disease. This year, the hospital celebrated the birth of 120,000 children since its foundation. It has also witnessed the birth of many members of the royal family in Abu Dhabi during the years following its establishment, among them Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed. Tribute to Dr Marian Kennedy Dr Marian Kennedy, who together with her husband, Dr. Pat Kennedy, opened the Oasis Hospital in Al-Ain in the early 1960s, has passed away. According to her daughter, Nancy Kennedy, “Kennedy died peacefully” back home in Carmichael,

California, on Thursday, July 17 at the age of 84. The deceased is survived by four children. Dr Marian was one of the recipients of the inaugural Abu Dhabi Awards, presented by Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, H.H. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The Kennedys’ life and work in Abu Dhabi were easily the highlight of their lives, and all four of their children also have very warm memories of their years growing up in Al Ain. “My parents loved the desert and the people they grew to know in Al Ain, and were loved in return,” said her daughter, Nancy Kennedy, in a tribute to her late mother. Born in Orland, California to Ernest and Margaret Chace, Dr. Marian (Miriam) Kennedy, a mother of four with a great sense of adventure, love for God and commitment to medical mission work, graduated from Orland High School in 1941, then UC Berkeley with a B.A. in Biochemistry 1945 and an M.A. in Physiology in 1946. Her love of science, enthusiasm for learning, and passionate commitment to community service combined to motivate her to attend medical school in Philadelphia, where she met and married a fellow medical student, Pat Kennedy. Their work took them to Lebanon, Iraq and Jordan before they settled in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi (then part of the Trucial States of Oman) and established the first hospital in Al Ain. Their efforts at the Oasis Hospital significantly contributed to the reduction of mortality rates, particularly among infants, and raised the birth rates. At least 4,000 babies were born while the Kennedys worked at the Oasis Hospital. In 1975 Drs. Marian and Pat moved to a private practice in Ripon, California. Upon retirement they settled in Garden Valley, California. In 2005, Marian received one of the inaugural Abu Dhabi Awards, presented by Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, H.H. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who was born at the Oasis Hospital. - Gulf News with inputs from WAM

Al Ain reservoir construction passes 50% milestone ME Construction News Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada) and Al Ain City Municipality (ACM) has announced that works on the main and secondary irrigation lines and reservoir construction project for the eastern sector of Al Ain City is now 50% complete, indicating that work is progressing in line with the construction plan as per the agreed delivery schedule. According to a report by WAM, the project is envisaged to be completed by Q3 2020. Both parties have stated that the project will span 30km and will have a total cost of $15.90 million. 344 workers, engineers and consultants are working around the clock to complete all the works of the project, which is being delivered in collaboration with a number of entities and strategic partners, the report added. It also said that the project would be delivered in record time, inline with the highest international standards and specifications. The project serves Al Ain city and the residential and commercial areas adjacent to the international highway between the Sultanate of Oman and the UAE, which will help significantly increase economic benefits and returns as well as enhance tourist attraction to the region and Al Ain city. It aims to secure sufficient supplies of recycled water for irrigation of existing and future vegetation cover, ensuring availability of sufficient water supplies for future and landscaping developments, besides ensuring sustainable and effective use of water while minimising use of groundwater and full automation of water and control of irrigation system at the eastern sector. Musanada added that the project involves construction of main and secondary irrigation lines; construction of four treated water tanks, each of 900 cubic meter capacity together with the auxiliary pumping station across the eastern sector regions at Mezyad, Al Dhaher, Umm Ghafah and Al Khurair; besides construction of irrigation pipes to feed the tanks and landscaping works. The project includes landscaping works to meet the needs of the sector’s residents across the Mezyad, Al Dhaher and Umm Ghafah areas; construction of walkways, cycling paths and exercise areas fitted with physical fitness equipment in those areas; besides construction of other 7km-long walkways and cycling paths inside Mezyad Mashtal as well as from the Mezyad Mashtal roundabout to the Truck roundabout. The company said that it utilised the latest construction technologies and materials for the construction of the walkways and cycling paths, so as to help absorb the adverse effects on the spine for joggers and walkers.

41

It also affirmed that it will observe eco sustainability requirements, maintaining multiple energy resources and continuously seeking to achieve sustainable development, establish the values of sustainability and add distinctive features across all the projects delivered by the company. Mohammed Saeed Al Shamsi, Parks and Recreational Facilities Director, Regional Services, Eastern Sector, said: “The project aims to stop depletion of fresh groundwater at the eastern sector, covering the Mezyad, Umm Ghafah and Al Dhaher areas, besides meeting the needs of landscaping and walkways in line with the urban development witnessed in those areas, in addition to the preliminary findings of the study concerning the sector’s needs of irrigation treated water, recreational facilities and green spaces. “The project scope of work will involve construction of five 12,300-metre long walkways; 2 walkways in Mezyaed: 870m and 1,140m long, Al Dhaher: 1,840m long, Umm Ghafah: 1,450m long and a 7,000-metre long walkway from the Mezyad Mashtal roundabout to the Trucks roundabout. This will be in addition to irrigation works, landscaping, playgrounds, physical fitness equipment, fittings and lighting, ultimately creating a healthy outlet for the sector’s residents,” he explained. Al Shamsi added that the project also includes construction of 4 tanks to secure sufficient supplies of recycled water to irrigate existing and future vegetation cover, ensuring availability of sufficient water supplies for future and landscaping development, besides ensuring sustainable and effective use of water while minimising use of groundwater and full automation of water and control of irrigation system of the eastern sector. The project is also expected to contribute to absorbing and solving the issue of rising groundwater levels in Al Ain city by diverting excess water during winter to this area, enabling execution of further landscaping to meet the needs of the sector’s residents. Execution of this project forms part of the efforts made by Musanada and ACM to realise on the ground the UAE leadership’s vision towards providing high quality infrastructure aligned to highest international standards to meet the needs of individuals and the community at large, aiming to improve the standard of living and quality of offered services, establish sound infrastructure to support local economy, boost sustainable development and ensure the community’s wellbeing and happiness, as translated by the directives and orders of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

2020 - Preparing for the next 50 years Khaleej Times Two Cabinet committees have been formed to chart out the future development plan of the UAE. While one committee will build a comprehensive 50-year development plan, the other will oversee the grand celebrations for the country’s 50th anniversary in 2021. This came as His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai; and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, announced 2020 to be the year of preparations for the next 50 years. Called ‘2020: Towards the next 50’, next year will witness the biggest national strategy to prepare for the coming 50 years on the federal and local level as the country approaches its golden jubilee in 2021. The first committee, chaired by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, is tasked with building a comprehensive development plan for the next 50 years. Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and the Future, will act as his deputy. The second committee will be chaired by Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and his deputy will be Sheikha Mariam bint Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Strides to success Taking to Twitter, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid said preparations for the country’s new journey will start in 2020. “We shall develop our plans and projects and reinvent new ideas. Fifty years ago, the founding fathers shaped our life today, and next year, we will shape the coming five decades for the future generations. He said the country will work on making giants leaps in “our economy, education, infrastructure, health, and media” to share the UAE’s new story with the world”. “Together, we will build the Emirates of the future in 2020 with the winning spirit of the union, a spirit that strives for progress. Our development journey has no end.” Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed said the UAE is about to mark a major milestone in its “modern history” as it approaches the golden jubilee with “rising hopes and aspirations to strengthen its cultural position in the journey of humanity”. “With the willpower and unity of our people, we will work tirelessly to achieve our goal in making the UAE among the best countries in the world by the UAE centennial in 2071.” He said the country would coordinate efforts, deploy possible resources and strengths and deepen community partnerships to lay the foundations of a significant phase in the journey of development. “We will

draft a new chapter in our economic, social and rapid development race. “Citizens and residents who form our society are all active partners in building a developmental and cultural model of the Emirates of the future.” He stressed that the achievements “we witnessed over the past five decades that gained widespread admiration across the world were the outcome of massive efforts, determination and dedication”. “We need to double the effort over the next five decades to meet our rising ambitions in an era that poses tougher challenges, fiercer competitions and rapid global transformations.” He affirmed that “such mission places a huge responsibility on every individual in the UAE and entails hard work and perseverance over the coming decades”. Post-oil era Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed said the way towards making the UAE among the best countries in the world by 2071 requires special focus. This will entail preparing sectors across the country to the post-oil era and building a knowledge-based economy based on innovation, science and modern technologies. “Top priority of the national work within the next 50 years will be placed on investing in talents and capabilities, strengthening our system of values based on tolerance, openness and coexistence and preserving our national heritage, customs and traditions. We will also dedicate our efforts to remain at the forefront of the global competition and lay strong foundations for the sustainable development of the coming generations. “Given the significant role of 2020 in preparing for an unprecedented developmental leap, the UAE’s readiness for the next 50 years does not start today or next year. Rather, it goes back to the long-term developmental plans, visions and strategies established and implemented throughout different phases of the country’s history. Today, we continue preparing and foreseeing the future and building a strong foundation to meet our goals with full confidence and persistence in a rapidly-changing world.” What 2020 means for the country Declaring ‘2020: Towards the next 50’ comes at

a turning point of the UAE history as the country prepares to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its union in December 2021. The UAE’s golden jubilee marks a major milestone that calls for renewing the country’s development model.

Charting the next 50 years >Chairperson: Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs >Deputy: Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and the Future

Institutional efforts across the country will be coordinated and innovative expertise, talents and capabilities harnessed in designing new systems for the next 50 years. A social vision will be created to ensure the involvement of all society segments in shaping the country to be the most advanced land that embraces the highest quality of life across the world.

This committee will build a development plan for the next 50 years. It is tasked with preparing a comprehensive development plan across the UAE and developing the government administrative system to make the UAE the fastest and most flexible and adaptable government to future changes. Here are its responsibilities:

New theme a lesson in UAE history Preparing resources to achieve the goals of the UAE Centennial through ‘2020: Towards the next 50’ is reminiscent of the pre-announcement phase of the UAE’s union in 1971. In the run-up to the country’s first milestone, the founding fathers deployed the necessary measures to overcome numerous challenges.

>Involving all segments of society in shaping life in the UAE for the next 50 years >Drawing a new economic map for the UAE and developing exceptional projects and policies to make giant leaps in the national economy >Cementing the soft power of the UAE and establishing media systems to share the country’s new story with the world, bringing economic and social returns that protect its gains and enhance opportunities in the new economy >Developing vital sectors including health, education, housing, transport and food security across the country to increase future readiness >Developing a comprehensive vision of the UAE society in the next 50 years that adapts demographics, family life and cultural identity to a rapidly-changing world. >Fostering the values of productivity and passion for progress to prepare the new generation for challenges and aspirations of the country in the next 50 years.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, lived through and actively participated in the formation of the union. He attended the February 1968 meeting where both the then ruler of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the then ruler of Dubai Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum first announced their intention to form a union, leading up to the country’s federation in December 1971 after a series of meetings and negotiations. The union resulted in forming the UAE as a country of the future. The young country then embarked on an intensive journey of advancement and progress through implementing plans and strategies to meet people’s needs in the fields of education, health, economy, society and culture. In a few years, the region’s most comprehensive and advanced service sector, especially in education and health, was developed. The country also created the region’s most attractive and efficient business environment, formed an effective media system and provided incubators for innovation. The UAE also dedicated huge investments in technology to become a leading incubator for digital and smart technologies, exceeding expectations in its rapid speed of development.

Ushering in the 50th year Chairperson: Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan Deputy: Sheikha Mariam bint Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan This committee will be tasked with organising the Emirates’ golden jubilee celebrations in 2021, developing a comprehensive preparation plan and forming teams to organise events and activities. Here are its responsibilities:

Sheikh Mohammed said: “I lived through the formation of the union in 1970 and will oversee the formation of the next five decades in 2020. We want 2020, the year before our golden jubilee, to be reminiscent of 1970 when a new journey was being drafted for this nation.

>Involving all segments of society in the preparations for the golden jubilee celebrations >Developing plans to strengthen the global outreach and impact of the celebrations >Involving the private sector in the preparation and execution of the festivities >Compiling a record of the country’s achievements since the federation and preserving these records for future generations >Involving embassies across the country in the preparations and executions of the celebrations to promote the UAE’s global image >Setting comprehensive mechanisms to coordinate events

“We will work together as citizens and residents across all sectors towards the next 50. United, we can make significant changes and raise our aspirations. “We are united by team, united by spirit, united towards a promising future.”

SURVEY SHOWS HALF OF UAE PARENTS DON’T KNOW THE LEGAL REQUIREMENTS FOR CHILD SEAT BELT USE More than half (55%) of parents don’t know the legal requirements for child seat belt use in the UAE, according to new survey.

tions, reminding parents of their responsibility and how on-road behaviour affects – and is eventually mimicked by - children.”

Whilst 91% of parents said they require children to wear a seatbelt in the car, the research, conducted by INFINITI Middle East, showed conflicting opinions on the age when the safety practice should be introduced.

The ‘Eyes on You’ campaign is closely aligned with the Dubai traffic safety strategy to reduce road fatalities by 1.5 for 100,000 population by 2021. A comprehensive seat belt law came into place in the UAE in 2017, making seat belts for rear seat passengers and child safety seats mandatory.

One quarter (26%) of those surveyed said that seatbelts should be worn from the age of three, whilst one fifth (20%) said the age for strapping in was six and above.

“Correct use of seatbelts remains a key priority for RTA, as we work to improve the safety of parents and children on the UAE’s roads,” said Deema Hussein, Traffic Awareness Senior Manager, Traffic Department of Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). We are therefore very happy to support the ‘Eyes on You’ campaign which engages one of the most important groups on the road – the parents.”

According to UAE law, vehicle driver and all passengers have to wear a seat belt at all times regardless of age, and children up to four years must be provided with a child safety seat.

Haad.ae states that more than 260,000 children die in road traffic crashes each year and up to 10 million more are injured.

The survey is part of a major new road safety awareness campaign by INFINITI Middle East, promoting the safety of children in vehicles Called ‘Eyes on You’, the campaign sheds light on parent’s on-road behaviours and the impact these have on children.

Globally, the majority of the fatal injuries to children under the age of 18 years are the result of road traffic crashes.

“Correct seatbelt use is an ongoing topic of conversation in the UAE, and this new survey shows that there is still a lot of confusion amongst parents, when it comes to safety rules,” said Markus Leithe, Managing Director, Middle East, INFINITI. “This new survey, and the ‘Eyes on You’ campaign, aims to draw attention to these crucial safety considera-

Big Dreams Make the Best Recipes, Says Michelin-Starred Greg Malouf At Sharjah World Book Capital Discussion Michelin-starred chef Greg Malouf was in his element while discussing his culinary journey and his latest bestselling cookbook at the inaugural ‘Cooks & Books’ session held at Al Rawi Café as part of the ongoing year-long Sharjah World Book Capital (SWBC) 2019 celebrations.

a typical Lebanese household where there was a lot of food and discussions centered around the kitchen table. However, I was not allowed into the kitchen and had to sneak in to raid the fridge!” By the age of 12, Malouf had decided he wanted to be a chef against stiff opposition from his parents who did not see a future in it. “I quit school, ran away from home to go to Sydney, where I apprenticed at a Mexican kitchen to learn the ropes.”

The Cooks & Books initiative celebrates local and international chefs and their cookbooks. It aims to promote reading by giving food enthusiasts the opportunity to look at cookbooks through the eyes of their authors.

When he returned, ready to cook up a storm, Malouf realised that the kind of restaurants he was looking for didn’t exist. That set him off on a journey around the world, beginning with Paris, to learn and eventually create his own version of a new culinary experience.

Malouf began by narrating why and how he became a chef whose forte is traditional Middle Eastern cuisine with a twist. The author of seven bestselling cookbooks, written in association with his former wife Lucy, Malouf talked about starting his own restaurant and later his consultancy in the UAE.

New Feast: Modern Middle Eastern Vegetarian, his latest bestseller, was a new direction for Malouf. “Arabic food tends to revolve around meats and fish. I wanted to show how you could cook amazing dish-

es using vegetables. Eggplant is my favourite vegetable; I plan to write a book on 1,001 ways to use it in dishes.” Revealing what goes into the creation of a recipe, Malouf said: “A lot of dreams. I am a big dreamer, while Lucy is the academic. She gets into my head, interprets my dreams, and writes down the recipe beautifully! All my dishes are based on memories of my childhood, my travels, or of certain vegetables and other ingredients.” Malouf credited the success of his books to the intensive research he and Lucy undertake before compiling their recipes. He also advised aspiring chefs to exercise restraint, and more importantly, follow their heart while experimenting with dishes. “Don’t overload the dishes with ingredients, colours, and so on just to make the plate look glamourous,” he said. “Food is not merely for Instagram. People must be able to eat it and enjoy it.” Auction for Australian bushfire victims An auction to raise funds for Australian bushfire victims, to be donated through Emirates Red Crescent to the Australian Red Cross, concluded the event. Fathi Afaneh, CEO of FAST Construction, won the bid for an exclusive dinner for six persons cooked by Malouf, hosted at either Malouf’s or the winner’s residence. His offer of AED 10,100 topped the lively bidding session that began at AED 1,000. The winner will also receive the original manuscript of Malouf’s next book scheduled to be published shortly.

FIVE HEALTH BENEFITS O VEGANUAR

With Veganuary month in full swing (January), there’s no better time than to re-think our daily diet and switch from animal produce to a vegan based lifestyle.

minerals will significantly give your energy levels a good boost and lower your stress levels. Here are a few delicious plant-based foods to help increase your energy levels. • Bananas are one of the best foods for energy. They are an excellent source of carbohydrates and are full of potassium and vitamin B6- all of which can help boost energy levels in the body. • Brown rice is extremely nutritious. It is less processed than white rice and retains more nutritional value in the form of fibre, vitamins and minerals. Thanks to its fibre content, brown rice has a low glycaemic index, meaning it can help regulate blood sugar levels and maintain steady levels throughout the day • Apples are rich in natural sugars and fibre and provide a slow and sustained energy release. Rich in antioxidants, apples also help slow down the digestion of carbohydrates, and release energy over a more extended period of time • Edamame beans are relatively low in calories, but these satisfying pick-me-up snacks are full of proteins, carbs and fibre. Edamame beans also have huge amounts of vitamins and minerals that help increase energy in different ways. • Leafy green vegetables like spinach, kale, broccoli, lettuce and watercress are all excellent sources of Vitamin B and have an important part to play in energy production. Incorporating these nutritious foods into your daily diet will help fight fatigue.

There are lots of reasons why people decide to go vegan, such as environmental concern and animal welfare, but eating a plant-based diet also has some major health perks too. According to Fitness First Nutrition Manager, Banin Shahine, a vegan diet is richer in certain nutrients. Studies have shown that a vegan diet provides the body with more fibre, antioxidants and beneficial plant compounds. These nutrients help the digestive system, protect the body from chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and diabetes and help cleanse the liver. Here, Banin Shahine, Nutrition Manager at Fitness First Middle East, shares her six health benefits of going vegan. A VEGAN DIET WILL HELP YOU EAT MORE WHOLE FOODS Eliminating meat and dairy can help increase your whole food intake and will also encourage you to get more creative in the kitchen. When you lead a vegan lifestyle, naturally you will be consuming a lot more colour and variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, that provide the body with the vitamins and minerals you need for optimal health.

YOU’LL SLASH YOUR SATURATED FAT INTAKE Saturated fat is primarily found in animal products like meat and cheese and it is a key factor in increasing cholesterol which contributes to many heart diseases. Adopting a vegan diet will automatically decrease your saturated fat intake. Any transition to more plant-based eating is extremely heart healthy.

OF EATING VEGAN FOR RY MONTH

Not only can a plant-based diet help with your cholesterol levels but it can also decrease the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes. FEWER MIGRAINES Migraines are commonly linked to diet, and food can often be the trigger. Try and stay away from chocolate and cheese and opt for plant-based foods, especially organic product as the produce is much purer and less likely to trigger a migraine attack. REDUCE THE RISK OF KIDNEY FAILURE A meat diet isn’t always best for the body, especially in high consumption. Recent studies have shown that by following a vegan diet you can reduce the risk of kidneys not functioning properly. Plant proteins are healthier for your organs and help encourage production levels within the liver and kidney.
