Coronavirus: Health ministry updates guidelines to help people stay safe from Covid-19 during Ramadan The National The 11 updated guidelines are as follows:

People in Abu Dhabi can exercise outdoors for up to two hours a day throughout Ramadan, under new guidelines issued by UAE authorities.

• Relatives are permitted to make family visits, but should refrain from inviting those more susceptible to the virus, including the elderly and those suffering from underlying medical conditions. • Groups of more than five people are not allowed to gather. • The elderly, and people with chronic diseases that make them more vulnerable to the virus must stay at home. • Gatherings, in private or public places, are not allowed. • Tents and Ramadan majalis are banned. • Distributing food, unless under the supervision of charities and the relevant government agencies, is prohibited. • Up to two hours of exercise near home is allowed, with groups of up to three permitted so long as they wear masks and adhere to two metre spacing. • Food should not be exchanged between different households. • In the event that food is received from relatives or friends, appropriate hygiene measures must be taken including the use of disposable, sealed bowls. • Congregational prayers, including tarawih, are allowed at home as long as all the worshippers are members of the same family and live together. • Domestic helpers are prohibited from meeting anyone outside the home and should not receive food from unknown sources. They must be provided necessary protective equipment, should they need to interact with people from outside the home, and should be advised on precautions to take when receiving post.

On Friday, the Ministry of Health and Prevention and the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority clarified their earlier announcements that lifted measures against gatherings and business opening hours to help people stay safe throughout the holy month and amid the coronavirus pandemic. The 11 health and social guidelines were released in a joint circular and include clarification on outdoor exercise, family gatherings for iftar and food distribution, state news agency Wam reported. They apply to every emirate but Dubai, which has its own measures in place issued by the Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management. Authorities said the measures followed the traditions and social customs associated with the holy month and were intended to ensure public safety and health. They urged people to maintain good hygiene practices, including frequent hand washing and avoiding hand to face contact.

“We want live lessons!

candles being replaced by light bulbs, the concept remains the same. This is not flippancy, for whilst I acknowledge the curriculum has changed with the development of pedagogy too, we do not see a seismic shift in the fundamentals of how children are engaged with their learning: If it’s not broken, why fix it? It would be like trying to make your own homemade tomato ketchup when most of our favourite brands can be purchased and cannot be beaten after 151 years of production.

“I have 3 children and only 1 computer. Only 1 child can do live lessons at a time!” “Stop asking us to print out materials for our children!” “Please provide more materials for us to support our children!” “There is too much work!”

So overnight, we are asking children to sit in front of a computer and log on to a screen to engage in their lessons. This is a ground-breaking shift and suddenly, we require the children to be attentive and disciplined in a newfound way, and we need them to not only focus, but download, read and interact with materials without the beady eye or physical support of a teacher. For our children, computers in the main mean surfing, gaming and video streaming: fun, not learning and we must be careful that as educators we don’t fall into the trap of making our lessons solely “fun” with lessons that are purely ‘Edutainment’ or ‘Technotainment’ in value.

“There is not enough work!” These are some of the main points myself and my fellow Principals have heard from parents over the past few weeks. So, what is Distance Learning and how can we ensure the very best for our children during these unprecedented times? Not even during the Second World War did all schools shut down in the UK, so for this global closure of education establishments to be taking place, we have to accept the severity of the Covid-19 Pandemic we all face, and come together as one, supporting each other to maintain learning as best we can.

I have read how some teachers are being asked by students to upload lessons on ‘Tik Tok’ or their ‘Insta’ account; words and phrases that too many teachers of a certain generation are alien to. There is a clash of generations with students placing value in technology, which is informal and bitesize in nature, whereas teachers require them to use it formally and increase their attention span. Currently Tik Tok and Instagram are not being used by AAESS so that lessons are not trivialised.

Technology has been around for many years now, yet never in its entirety has it superseded the need for teachers. If you look at how children were taught in the 1800’s, you will find they sat in rows at desks, facing the teacher and a chalkboard. Today, we sit the children at their desks facing whiteboards. Whilst technology is now found in the classroom with The Source

enforced Spring Break as a trial period for live learning. After this initial period, we noticed quite quickly the following issues:

1. Parents with more than 1 child with only 1 computer, could not access live lessons simultaneously;

2. Many parents wanted to support each child during

their lessons;

3. Students were keen to chat to their classmates 4.

In a world where technology develops and changes so fast, research is limited to answer this fundamental question and certainly in the situation we find ourselves in right now. I was privileged to attend this year’s BETT (British Educational Training & Technology) conference in London and sit in a lecture by Dr Alison Clarke-Wilson from the UCL Institute of London who is an expert in educational technology. Her lecture was entitled, “The Billion Dollar Edtech Question: Can We Prove It Works?” and explored the value of technology in education. I was surprised that after an hour, her answer to the big question was a simple, “No!” Like most who attended that lecture, I guess I was looking for the Golden Goose and that one stop solution to enhancing learning through a computer chip.

5. 6. 7. 8.

As a result, we took the decision working with our Assistant Principal and e-Learning co-ordinator Mr Robert Rudling, to use Google Classrooms, so students could access the class at any time and anywhere. More importantly they could come back to the lesson again should they need or not understand, and the students could ask questions of any aspect and at any time about their learning and could receive personalised feedback on every piece of work.

With this in mind, it has now been left to Principals and their teams to create new pedagogy for a virtual classroom that inspires, enthuses and ignites learning from the bedroom, dining room table or living room at home. As educators we are presented with ‘shiny’ boxes and literature from a multitude of companies, all selling their wares and abilities to enhance learning, yet, few have the provenance of tried and tested research.

Did we get it right the first time? No, not entirely, and we are still evolving, but we listened to parents and staff (and continue to do so), and we moderated the learning ourselves. As a parent to a Year 1 and Year 10 child, I was immediately able to evaluate the work set for these students, alongside several of my senior team members who have children in the school. Dare I say this, but my wife has been my biggest critic as she became the home-school teacher to our 6-year-old boy. I have listened! However, I can see at first-hand how teachers have risen to the challenge, learned new techniques and worked even more hours than before. We have even produced interactive teaching tools to guide parents and develop their understanding too.

Microsoft Teams was immediately identified as the solution with the ability to provide live lessons. Likewise, Google Hangouts was suggested as an alternative. Zoom was a tool also promoted. These were the knee-jerk solutions to a problem presented by people with no or little experience in using these for educational purposes. For sure, they may have used them for business to hold meetings with other adults and professionals within their field, but now these platforms were being pushed with one key concept: they could simply re-create the classroom. But do they really provide key learning environments and opportunities to study for children? Quantitatively they have the logistical platform, but qualitatively, do they improve educational outcomes?

they missed over this medium and were disengaged; Students and parents could not revisit the teaching if needing reinforcement of key concepts; Could the bandwidth in Al Ain cope with all students in the city accessing video streaming? Could the video service servers keep up with the demand from around the globe? The timings of live learning didn’t always meet the needs of the working parent. Safety was also a priority using these platforms: could children be exposed to harmful material during a live lesson from hackers?

The key point that parents have requested, is that there is interactivity with the student. Parent-teacher consultations online have been developed within our school, but essentially, students and parents have valued hearing and seeing their teacher more than anything else; live or recorded.

I conclude this article as a parent, and not just as an educator, where I have first-hand experience of my two sons’ distance learning. The first week was frustrating; getting the boys into a routine, printing off materials for them to learn, uploading work for my younger son for his teacher to mark and understanding some of the key concepts to deliver. I am a secondary teacher, not a primary teacher! However, after my own initial anger at the situation, embarrassment as an educator, and shortcomings as a parent, I realised with my wife that following a routine, trusting the teachers’ instructions, and working closely with my sons, we actually can get through this and it is a wonderful time to bring the family together, despite the challenges that it creates. It is also a real honour to see the progress that your child makes too, something that is normally only reserved for the teacher.

to continue the learning to ensure the pupils do not fall behind, with some converting parts of their homes into a classroom that can be used as a backdrop for their videos; learning and researching new skills and techniques as well as planning and delivering the lessons and answering individual requests and questions that they receive. Please take this time to support your child’s teacher. It is easy to criticise, it is easy to get upset, it is also easy to become an educational expert. Many teachers are parents too and are now also full-time teachers for their own children as well as yours.

Distance Learning will never replace the need for our teachers, but what it does do is bring you closer as a family. It also should make you value your children’s teachers and their skills and the craft that they deliver on a daily basis.

Larry Tesler invented cut and paste, and coined the phrase “user-friendly”. Globally, we now send 188 million emails every minute of every day. 5G technology is expected to generate $3.6 trillion by 2035. His career in the technology sector spanned 50 years and was witness to many innovations that are now part of our daily lives.

The mouse revolutionized the way people interact with computers, getting away from the purely text-driven approach and ushering in the era of the graphical user interface that we are all familiar with today. 2. You’ve got mail Email was invented in the mid-1960s, too, and has become one of the most ubiquitous features of modern life. Some would say a little too ubiquitous.

In 1961, Larry Tesler went to study at Stanford University, which itself has been pivotal to the growth of Silicon Valley. It’s where Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard met before founding the company that bears their name; Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the founders of Google, studied there too, as did Elon Musk.

Every minute of every day, 188 million emails are sent and more than half of them are spam. In the early 1970s, when the @ symbol was first integrated into email addressing protocols, the only people with access to an email mailbox were users of The Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET). That was the first wide-area network and connected dozens of universities across the United States. 3. On the move

Tesler worked at some of the biggest names in Silicon Valley: Apple, Xerox, and Yahoo. He also worked briefly at Amazon. The pioneering computer scientist believed passionately that computers needed to be easy to use, and is credited by some as having coined the phrase “user-friendly”.

The chances are you’re reading this on something other than a desktop. Everyone takes for granted the ability to take their computer with them, whether it’s a laptop, a tablet or even their smartphone.

In the 1970s, he developed the cut/copy and paste function that is now so widely used that it’s hard to imagine not being able to Ctrl-X/Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V.

The very first vision for a mobile computer dates back to the 1970s, when Alan Kay, a researcher at Xerox PARC, had an idea for something he called the Dynabook. Apart from a cardboard mock-up, nothing came of it. But in 1981, the world was introduced to the Osborne 1 – the first portable computer. It had a 13cm screen that could only display 52 characters on each line of text. If you wanted one, it would have set you back $1,795. It was basic by any modern standards, but the Osborne 1 sounded the starting pistol for the race to

growth of smart cities and the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It could even assist progress toward some of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. And over the next five years, investments in 5G networks are likely to reach $1 trillion.

This was a period of innovation that saw the very first touchpad – it appeared on the Gavilan SC, launched in 1983 and the first computer to be referred to as a laptop.

The UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 12 calls for responsible consumption and production, to reduce waste and preserve resources. 5G is already helping cut waste in smart factories. Its role in managing smart cities, where sensors collect data on the daily hustle and bustle of city life will help reduce congestion and emissions by keeping traffic moving, too.

The 1990s was the boom-decade for laptops. The chip-maker Intel designed the first processor specifically for mobile devices and many big-name computer makers started to produce laptops based on mass-produced components, such as screens, processors and circuit boards.

It also has the potential to revolutionize the provision of multiple vital services such as education and healthcare by connecting people to one another, and to devices that can gather important information. Clinicians will be able to assess a person’s vital signs – heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and more – in real-time, no matter how far from the patient they happen to be.

And then, a little over 10 years ago, the world was introduced to the ultimate in mobile computing devices – the smartphone as we know it now. There are currently more than 3 billion smartphones around the world, their user-friendliness being one of the key factors in their tremendous success.

Sarcophagus of Princess Henuttawy: Coffins and mummy wrappings Egypt, 950–900 BCE, H. 180 cm; painted wood, stuccoed and painted cloth Louvre Abu Dhabi

The seemingly immutable system of Egyptian funerary practices and beliefs is actually an illusion, as they never ceased to evolve from the time of the Old Kingdom (2625−2130 BCE). At the beginning of the 1st millennium BCE, when Egypt underwent a period of serious political unrest, the pillaging of royal burial chambers in the necropolis of Thebes caused general anxiety and brought about a transformation of customs. One was an increase in the number of protective layers for the deceased and 16

recourse to the gods to ensure the survival of the deceased in the afterlife. This is why the princess Henuttawy, Pharaoh’s daughter, was buried in an exceptional set of nested sarcophagi and a cartonnage case that enveloped her like a veritable cocoon, on both of which her name and titles were repeated continually. Henuttawy, “Venerated Mistress of the House”, was the “Daughter of the king, Lord of the Two Lands, Sheshonq” and of “Shebet-Aset.” Although we are unable to identify which pharaoh is mentioned as several named Sheshonq ruled Egypt at the start of the millennium, the name of the king immediately links this princess with the royal families of the 22nd Dynasty (945–715 BCE). The body rested beneath richly decorated cartonnage representing the shroud of Osiris. The burial mask is made from gilded wood to imitate the imperishable flesh of the gods. The delicacy of the features and the large, elegantly underlined eyes attest to treatment reserved exclusively for the royal entourage. The numerous divinities depicted on the cartonnage include Maat, Osiris, Isis and Nephthys, as well as the four sons of Horus and the goddess Hathor, all of whom reinforce the physical and symbolic protection of the princess.

Three apparently modest wooden sarcophagi protected the princess’s mortal remains. In an approximate reproduction of the shape of the princess’s body, they gave no indication of the lavishness of the cartonnage inside. The use of cartonnage increased during the Third Intermediate Period. Hugging the body of the deceased, it was moulded around a core made of mud, straw and several layers of linen, then covered with stucco and painted. A long slit in the underside allowed the body to be inserted once the core had been removed.

The cartonnage of Henuttawy is remarkable for the vibrancy of the colours and the delicacy of its painted decoration. The princess’s face, carved from wood and gilded, the refinement of her features, and her eyes in glass paste emphasized with kohl together endow the figure with striking presence. Although Henuttawy has her fists closed on the outer sarcophagi, her fingers are long and tapering on the cartonnage case. Their slenderness and the detail given to the nails provide another instance of the skill of the craftsmen who worked for the royal family. Maat, who can be identified by the feather she wears on her headdress, is seen beneath Henuttawy’s large usekh collar. The goddess of justice was of primary importance in the Judgement of Osiris, when the soul of the deceased was weighed against the feather of Maat to see whether it would be allowed to enjoy eternal life in the afterworld. 17

Parenting Tips to Help Cope During COVID-19 by Aakanksha Tangri, Founder of Re:Set

The only topic on everyone’s mind is COVID-19 and the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic. It’s easy to find yourself in an echo chamber with information overload, which can lead to anxiety and panic. By now, most of us know that we must regularly wash our hands for at least 20 seconds,

It can be hard to be cooped up at home, but COVID-19 can have a devastating impact on older sections of the population and those who are immunocompromised. This is why it’s necessary we do our part in following government instructions and practise safe hygiene.

Take turns If you have a significant other or a neighbour in a similar situation, team up and take turns on how to manage household chores or essential grocery runs. Come up with a schedule on who will tackle certain chores such as laundry, making lunch, helping the kids with homework and who will be the more hands-on adult for the day. This will give everyone a breather and also allow you to focus on other things.

Me time Amidst all this, it’s crucial you put aside some time during the day to focus on your own well-being and mental health. Whether that’s before the kids get up or when they’re in the midst of their online classes, you need to find ways to Re:Set yourself. If exercise is your coping tool and with gyms shut, find a video online you can follow to do at home. If you’re craving a particular dish, try your hand at cooking that — cooking is known to be therapeutic.

Talk to your kids They’re bound to get antsy and restless. Have an age-appropriate conversation with them about why we’re indoors, practising social distancing and how we all need to come together during this time. Explain to them that their health and that of their friends and family is paramount and we all need to do our bit to get past this. Keep reminding them to wash their hands regularly, let you know if they have any symptoms and to keep their hands away from their faces. It’ll be hard, but practice makes perfect!

A toddler’s smile lights up the room after hearing for the first time SUCCESSFUL HEARING DEVICE IMPLANTATION SURGERY PERFORMED AT MEDICLINIC AL JOWHARA HOSPITAL IN AL AIN A 16 month-old boy, Mohammed, has heard for the first time since birth after recently undergoing a successful cochlear implant surgery at Mediclinic Al Jowhara Hospital in Al Ain. The young boy was diagnosed with hearing loss at birth due to a non-functioning sensory neural cell in the cochlear. From that point, and in their quest to find a suitable solution for their young child, his parents explored various options until they decided on cochlear implant surgery. Visiting surgeon Professor Abdulrahman Hagr, Professor and Consultant ENT and President of Arab Academy of Otology and Cochlear Implant, said, “Hearing loss adversely impacts the development of speech and language skills. My advice to all parents is to seek immediate medical attention as clinical outcomes are much higher in cases detected and treated promptly.” Professor Hagr added, “Advanced technologies are available to detect hearing problems and their severity, which in turn help guide physicians and families towards the right treatment modality. A tailored treatment plan will not only improve communication skills, but will also contribute immensely to an improved quality of life.”

A multidisciplinary team successfully performed the surgery in under two hours. Through a small incision behind the ear, the electrodes were carefully inserted in the cochlear avoiding any trauma to the inner ear or damage to the critical nerves that are responsible for facial movements. The cochlear implant consists of an external and internal part. The external part, which is placed behind the ear, is responsible for capturing sounds and transmitting them to the internal part of the implant. The electrodes then send electrical signals to the cochlear nerve, after which the information is sent to the brain to interpret those signals and process them as sounds and speech. Dr.Omnya Zain, Specialist Audiovestibular Medicine at Mediclinic Al Jowhara Hospital, said post-surgery, “On the same day as the surgery, we activated the cochlear implant and adjusted the frequency of the device. Mohammad was able to hear his mother’s voice for the first time and smiled as he began to listen to sounds.” Mohammad was able to detect even fine sounds and he can now detect direction of sounds.” Dr. Omniya added, “We will be adjusting the frequency of the implant gradually throughout his rehabilitation programme, which will eventually allow optimal hearing.”

Coronavirus: Tips on isolation from top Nasa astronaut What we share is much more powerful than what keeps us apart by Astronaut Scott Kelly - as published in Gulf News

because I knew I was in it for the long haul — just like we all are today. Take time for fun activities: I met up with crewmates for movie nights, complete with snacks, and binge watched all of “Game of Thrones” — twice.

Being stuck at home can be challenging. When I lived on the International Space Station for nearly a year, it wasn’t easy. When I went to sleep, I was at work. When I woke up, I was still at work. Flying in space is probably the only job you absolutely cannot quit.

And don’t forget to include in your schedule a consistent bedtime. Nasa scientists closely study astronauts’ sleep when we are in space, and they have found that quality of sleep relates to cognition, mood, and interpersonal relations — all essential to getting through a mission in space or a quarantine at home.

But I learned some things during my time up there that I’d like to share — because they are about to come in handy again, as we all confine ourselves at home to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. Here are a few tips on living in isolation, from someone who has been there.

Craving nature One of the things I missed most while living in space was being able to go outside and experience nature. After being confined to a small space for months, I actually started to crave nature — the colour green, the smell of fresh dirt, and the feel of warm sun on my face.

On the space station, my time was scheduled tightly, from the moment I woke up to when I went to sleep. Sometimes this involved a spacewalk that could last up to eight hours; other times, it involved a five minute task, like checking on the experimental flowers I was growing in space. I’ve seen people reading to children via videoconference, donating their time and dollars to charities online, and running errands for elderly or immuno-compromised neighbours You will find maintaining a plan will help you and your family adjust to a different work and home life environment. When I returned to Earth, I missed the structure it provided and found it hard to live without.

That flower experiment became more important to me than I could have ever imagined. My colleagues liked to play a recording of Earth sounds, like birds and rustling trees, and even mosquitoes, over and over. It brought me back to earth. (Although occasionally I found myself swatting my ears at the mosquitoes.) For an astronaut, going outside is a dangerous undertaking that requires days of preparation, so I appreciate that in our current predicament, I can step outside any time I want for a walk or a hike — no spacesuit needed. Research has shown that

spending time in nature is beneficial for our mental and physical health, as is exercise.

and absorption you can find in a physical book — one that doesn’t ping you with notifications or tempt you to open a new tab — is priceless.

You don’t need to work out two and a half hours a day, as astronauts on the space station do, but getting moving once a day should be part of your quarantine schedule (just stay at least six feet away from others).

Many small bookstores are currently offering kerbside pickup or home delivery service, which means you can support a local business while also cultivating some much-needed unplugged time.

Read a book When you are confined in a small space you need an outlet that isn’t work or maintaining your environment.

You can also practice an instrument (I just bought a digital guitar trainer online), try a craft, or make some art. Astronauts take time for all of these while in space. (Remember

Some people are surprised to learn I brought books with me to space. The quiet

Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield’s famous cover of David Bowie’s Space Oddity?) Nasa has been studying the effects of isolation on humans for decades, and one surprising finding they have made is the value of keeping a journal. Throughout my yearlong mission, I took the time to write about my experiences almost every day. Write about memories If you find yourself just chronicling the days’ events (which, under the circumstances, might get repetitive) instead try describing what you are experiencing through your five senses or write about memories. Even if you don’t wind up writing a book based on your journal like I did, writing about your days will help put your experiences in perspective and let you look back later on what this unique time in history has meant. Even with all the responsibilities of serving as commander of a space station, I never missed the chance to have a videoconference with family and friends. Scientists have found that isolation is damaging not only to our mental health, but to our physical health as well, especially our immune systems. Technology makes it easier than ever to keep in touch, so it’s worth making time to connect with someone every day — it might actually help you fight off viruses. I’ve found that most problems aren’t rocket science, but when they are rocket science, you should ask a rocket scientist. Living in space taught me a lot about the importance of trusting the advice of people who knew more than I did about their subjects, whether it was science, engineering, medicine, or the design of the incredibly complex space station that was keeping me alive. The Source

Especially in a challenging moment like the one we are living through now, we have to seek out knowledge from those who know the most about it and listen to them. Seek reputable sources Social media and other poorly vetted sources can be transmitters of misinformation just as handshakes transmit viruses, so we have to make a point of seeking out reputable sources of facts, like the World Health Organisation and the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Centre. Seen from space, the Earth has no borders. The spread of the coronavirus is showing us that what we share is much more powerful than what keeps us apart, for better or for worse. All people are inescapably interconnected, and the more we can come together to solve our problems, the better off we will all be. One of the side effects of seeing Earth from a the perspective of space, at least for me, is feeling more compassion for others. As helpless as we may feel stuck inside our homes, there are always things we can do — I’ve seen people reading to children via videoconference, donating their time and dollars to charities online, and running errands for elderly or immuno-compromised neighbours. The benefits for the volunteer are just as great as for those helped. I’ve seen humans work together to prevail over some of the toughest challenges imaginable, and I know we can prevail over this one if we all do our part and work together as a team. Oh, and wash your hands — often. — Scott Kelly is an American astronaut. A veteran of four space flights, Kelly commanded the International Space Station on Expeditions 26, 45, and 46 26

5 Simple Steps to Becoming Your Own Boss

Al Khaimah or Sharjah, are rewarding experiences, but they also come with their stressors and ups and downs. Leaving behind the 9-5 life to run a business on your own, where all responsibilities are yours alone and you answer to yourself takes resilience. Assess your strengths and weaknesses honestly so that you can predict how you’ll react and how you can motivate yourself over the course of your business launch. You also need to have an emotional support system and resources in place to get you through the bumpy patches.

If you’re ready to take the plunge to be your own boss, that probably means you’ve reached a stage in your career where you want your job to be something you love doing with greater independent creative and management control. If this describes you, follow these five steps to follow your dreams by starting your business.

4. Network Just because you’re going to be your own boss and run your own business doesn’t mean you have to do it alone. Connect with the startup community around you to learn about what challenges members face and their solutions for overcoming business setbacks. Visit nearby business setup consultants in Dubai and business setup consultants in UAE and check out their roster of courses, workshops and networking events. Organisations provide plenty of opportunities for new business owners to learn the ropes, and you’ll also meet others like yourself.

1. Plan Planning should ideally start whilst you’re still employed. This might feel like a challenge, but it’s also a good way to get a sense of the longer hours you’ll be spending to get your new business off the ground. Carve out some time each day to identify your business goals, how you want to introduce your new product or service to the market, and your revenue generation strategy. It’s also a good time to get familiar with business regulations so that you know what applications you need to launch your business on time. Business setup consultants in Dubai who manage business setup services in UAE can help you manage the planning process and create a solid foundation for your new company.

5. Budget Becoming your own boss means you need a solid financial plan, as you’re independently responsible for your company’s profitability. For one, you have to consider whether it makes sense to invest in your company on your own, or whether you want to take out a loan. Second, you need a realistic account of initial costs, as well as ongoing expenses. It’s a good idea to consult with a financial planner to come up with a revenue generation plan that allows you to feasibly meet expenses and plan for long term profitability.

2. Research You need to know your market in order to launch a successful company. Before you start a business in Dubai, you want to look into consumer behaviour for the product or service you want to introduce, and consider how your innovation answers a need and how it will be received. Good places to begin your research include customer reviews and media reporting on brand successes and failures. Thinking about and researching market dynamics in advance means you can strategise sales and marketing, and be better prepared for curveballs.

Thinking of your very own venture? Talk to Decisive Zone about how to pursue your passion and ensure professional success. FIVE EFFECTIVE WORKOUTS THAT YOU CAN DO AT HOME Whether you are a beginner wanting to start a fitness routine or someone who simply enjoys the liberty of at-home workouts, then this guide is for you! From convenience to privacy, there are many reasons why you might want to start incorporating home workouts into your routine. All you need is to adopt the right mindset about fitness, stay motivated, spend some time warming up and make it happen. With a little bit of effort, a home workout can be just as effective as a gym workout. Elite Master Trainer at Fitness First, Abhinav Malhotra shares his best home exercises that you can easily and safely incorporate into your fitness routine. With a couple of simple body weight workouts, you can build muscle and enhance your strength while improving balance and flexibility. WARM-UP Warming up is the most important step of any workout routine. No matter how tempting it is to directly dive in, try to invest a couple of minutes warming up to increase your heart rate and release any muscle tension. The most important reason to warm-up is to prevent any acute injuries. Begin with on-the-spot exercises such as jogging and jumping jacks, for 30-seconds each. PLANKS Now that you are all warmed up, it’s time to plank! Planking is one of the most effective ways to strengthen your entire body at once. Planking is a form of isometric exercise that works by holding one position until you can no longer keep your body in proper alignment, and you start to feel your muscles burn. Start by making sure that your shoulders are away from your ears and your heels are aligned over the balls of your feet. The right way to plank is by pushing up with your elbows under your shoulders, squeezing your abs while keeping a straight back and, contracting your glutes and quads. WALL SQUATS Wall squats are perfect when it comes to strengthening your glutes, quads and hamstrings. This exercise requires you to hold a seated position for up to 60 seconds against a vertical surface. If you like a little bit of a challenge, then try extending one leg alternatively and shift your body weight on the other leg. This exercise will increase your muscular endurance while burning a lot of calories. The Source

BURPEES Are your ready for a full body workout? Burpees may look simple and straight-forward from afar but try doing a burpee for 30-seconds and you will find out how powerful this exercise is. Burpees work a wide range of muscles which boosts your cardiovascular fitness while improving strength and mobility. TIP: There are two steps to a classic burpee - a pushup followed by a leap in the air, or if you are up for a challenge, try throwing in a couple more press-ups to ramp up the difficulty. WALKING LUNGES This is another great exercise to work your glutes, hamstrings, and quads. The secret to doing lunges correctly is control. Step one leg forward and bend your knee to a 90-degree angle by lowering your hip. Make sure your knees and ankles are aligned. Gently lower your back knee without touching the ground and then press the heels of your forward foot to the ground and walk forward stepping into a lunge. With three sets of 20, your thighs will feel the workout. MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS Mountain climbers work your upper and lower body. Not only does this exercise get your blood pumping and burn calories but it also improves hip joint mobility and core stability. Ideally, you should try to complete at least three sets of 15-20 reps on each side. Alternatively, you can swap between walking lunges and mountain climbers for three sets, a set of mountain climbers and then a set of lunges. How far are you willing to go? Is career fulfillment way overdue for you? If so, it’s likely that career frustration invades your every waking moment; sitting and waiting for change to arrive on your doorstep makes the pain worse. How far are you willing to go, to be an active player in helping career frustration dissipate?

pening to me’, fueling a blame attitude to grow bigger by the day. Her spirit is broken and feels heavier in every exchange. How can she possibly claw her way out of career frustration when in such a state of despair? The magic of dreams is that they transport you to another space, a positive fantasy that you can see, feel and embed yourself into. This invites positivity back, and does not have to only exist in our sleep. Challenge yourself to some doodling and sketching (ranging from stick figures up to elaborate masterpieces; anything goes when hope is lacking); this will provide pictures and stories to connect with and place yourself in, occupying your mind with how things can look and feel, and a story of the future. Is it a new boss you see in the picture, more collaboration, good use of time, exciting projects, time with family – after all, it is your story and not for anyone else. This is a lot healthier than shame, a lot more constructive than blame and a lot braver than covering your frustration with ‘busy-ness’, ensuring you simply don’t have time to deal with your disappointment and hopelessness.

Does career frustration only stem from inefficiency in your organization? We think the answer is ‘no’, and suggest that before you work on ‘all things career’, there’s an opportunity to work on ‘all things you’. By working on ‘all things you’, the source of power for change shifts from somebody else to you, in which case, you are in the driver’s seat and you call the shots. That allows you to take action to reposition, redesign or recreate your career. However, before action, there’s a need for a healthy disposition, mindset and state of ‘being’. Action will only gain desired results when executed with a healthy and hopeful mind, body and spirit. Dreams give hope My friend Barbara has lost any hope for a career that keeps her engaged and productive. Yesterday, her tears of hopelessness were so painful that they pulled at the depths of my gut. On one hand, I’m extremely happy that she is releasing her frustration about her job reality, yet on the other it’s worrying to me as she can only see doom and gloom.

Has your state of being become just a tiny bit healthier, with a glimmer of hope peaking through? Part of the dreaming process will also allow you to ‘bend’ time. Imagine yourself with that nasty boss, the toxic team, your boring tasks, current limited growth, reduced salary, high job pressure etc. Ask yourself: will I still be in this horrible situation thirty years from now. Not likely! So, bring

that length of time back towards yourself and ask: twenty or ten years? Again, not likely. So now move into months. Is there light at the end of a shorter tunnel now? This will bring perspective and add a new dimension to the sketch and story from before. In your imagination, this process will allow you to have influence over time, something previously considered to be impossible. Has your state of being become just a tiny bit healthier, with a glimmer of hope peaking through? If all else fails, surround yourself with something or someone positive you haven’t had in your environment for the past 48 hours. The conversation, the focus, the sound, the activity – whatever it is, change your everyday up. Drowning in isolation and frustration will simply shut your system down. Take a temperature check of how you feel with just a few hours surrounded with new-ness. I recently watched a video from a hidden camera in a nature reserve. The camera was placed next to a fallen log which lay over a bubbling stream. The recording showed a year’s worth of wildlife making use of the log to cross the stream. What’s this got to do with your career? If the video was no longer secretly recording wildlife but rather your ability to create hope in times of career frustration, what would it identify? Would it reveal you to be someone who constantly invests in strengthening your mind, body and spirit in the face of job adversity, ensuring that when you do take action to reposition, recreate or redesign your career, it will be done in a way that will have only positive influence and ultimately achieve the result you desire? The need for hope cannot be overstated when career fulfillment is non-existent. Converting job frustration to career fulfillment will depend on a consistent and clear focus in a productive manner with conviction and a strong sense of significance. How are you ensuring that your state of being has the capacity and courage to achieve this?

Debbie Nicol, managing director of ‘business en motion’, builds org systems, frameworks and cultures through the services of training, coaching and solutions, helping move businesses and leaders ahead through change. ‘learning en motion’, a niche brand of ‘business en motion’ is a contemporary response for those leaders who feel frustrated in the workplace, enabling them to be part of the solution. 33

Abu Dhabi to be free of single-use plastic bags by 2021 New policy launched by Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi targets reduction of single-use plastics in the emirate Abu Dhabi, UAE: 9 March 2020: The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) have today announced a new policy to reduce single-use plastic materials in Abu Dhabi, mitigating its harmful effects. The comprehensive policy, which is the firstof-its-kind in the region, aims to keep plastics out of the environment and eliminate the use of avoidable single-use plastic and non-plastic materials by 2021 through fostering a culture of recycling and re-use and encouraging more sustainable practices in the community. One of the key aspects of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD)’s policy is focused on making Abu Dhabi free of single-use plastic bags by 2021. The policy continues the legacy of the UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed, who had a deep passion for preserving the environ-

ment and achieving sustainability. Under the directive of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD), the policy is part of the Abu Dhabi Government’s efforts to increase sustainability and improve the environment through the ‘Ghadan 21’programme that is accelerating the development of the Abu Dhabi economy and investing in the community. Developed in line with international standards, the policy will be implemented over the next two years (2020-21) in co-ordination with government and private stakeholders and has been prepared with the support of Emirates Nature WWF and 12 other government entities, including the Department of Economic Development. Six major outlets and many private sector entities producing plastic materials in Abu Dhabi were also involved. The scope of the policy includes developing regulations to limit the use of targeted single use plastics in Abu Dhabi gradually with a phased approach with incentives to target consumption of single use plastic bags through fees and then banning them, introduce fees on single use plastics with available sustainable alternatives and prevent free distribution of such items to the end user. To realize Abu Dhabi’s vision for an environ-

mentally, socially and economically sustainable waste management system, the policy identifies the 16 most common single-use plastics that cause the largest amount of marine waste (according to global studies) and will be targeted to varying degrees during the new policy implementation.

habitats, endangering marine wildlife and impacting the food chain by releasing toxic chemical compounds. This issue is a grave concern for the preservation of our local species, posing a threat to our marine wildlife, sea turtles and seabirds, among others. Our policy responds to this global issue.”

These include plastic bags, beverage cups and lids, plastic cutlery, straws and stirrers that are going to be subject to fees. Plastic bottles will be targeted through the introduction of a plastic bottle return scheme supported with incentives.

Her Excellency added: “If we do not take bold steps to contain the use of single-use plastics through influencing behavior and effective waste management, there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans and seas by 2050 – creating lasting impacts on, not just ocean health, but ultimately human health and global food security.”

Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General, Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi, said: “The launch of the single-use plastics policy reflects our steadfast commitment towards transitioning to a more sustainable economy that seeks to minimise waste and protect vital ecosystems in our environment.

Studies show that 36% of the global production of single use plastics are not recycled and globally more than 400 million tonnes of different types of plastics are produced every year. As a result of high consumption rates and low recycling operations, by 2050 it is expected that for every three tonnes of fish in the ocean, there will be one tonne of plastic.

“By implementing this new policy, Abu Dhabi will be joining more than 127 countries around the world that have already taken measures to ban or limit the use of disposable plastic materials. Our policy is aligned with international standards in order to make Abu Dhabi a pioneer in reducing the use of avoidable single use plastic and non-plastic materials by 2021.

In the United Arab Emirates, 11 billion plastic bags are consumed annually (according to a report presented in The World Government Summit in February 2019), which is the equivalent of 1,184 plastic bags per person per year compared to a global average of 307 plastic bags per person per year.

“An estimated 13 million tonnes of plastic enter the world’s oceans annually, altering vital

Keeping “Appy” at home With the current limitations on getting outside and a “normal” life as we know it, the internet has become an all important vehicle to transport us from our current situation. We rounded up some great apps to add value during the days ahead.

Omvana - for meditation

Here are just a few reasons why Omvana is different from most meditation apps out there (and why it became the #1 app in its category in 30+ countries): • A library of 300+ tracks for all areas of life • Guided meditations by some of the world’s top teachers • Combine tracks for a fresh experience every time • Available on app store and Google Play

Playing solo: The Sims Mobile Badipsa froopy noo (that’s Simlish, for the uninitiated)! The Sims is still as fun as you remember, perhaps now more than ever -- you manipulate the life of a virtual person who can shop, date, throw parties, meet ghosts -everything we can’t do right now. Playing The Sims during a pandemic is an exercise in wishful thinking. Or you can trap your Sim in their home (just delete all the doors!) and drive them as stir-crazy as you feel.

EdX - for learning

Much has been made about Yale University’s “Happiness” course, available to non-Yale students now for free. Once you learn about the roots of joy, dig into the 2,000 classes available through the EdX app. Think of a topic, any topic -- they probably have a class for that, offered by one of more than 100 universities. You won’t earn a degree, but you will earn bragging rights for furthering your education while isolating.

For gaming

Playing with friends: Heads Up! on Houseparty You may be familiar with Heads Up! (the Ellen DeGeneres-backed game that’s kind of like a reverse charades), and you may be familiar with Houseparty (the video calling app that mashes all your friends together on one screen). Here’s how to combine the two since we can’t be with friends in person. First, download Houseparty. Click the die in the upper right corner. Heads Up! should appear in the drop-down column. Gather your friends, and voila!

Project Foodie: Guided Cooking - For cooking Amateur cooks of the world looking to broaden their culinary horizons, Project Foodie hears you, and it knows you’re capable of more. That’s why it breaks down recipes step-by-step in a video, led by pro chefs. And unlike their TV counterparts, these cooks won’t skip a moment of prep. By the end, you’ll be blanching and julienne-ing better than they can.

Runkeeper - For working out

The app tracks your runs and measures your progress -- and if you keep it up, you can earn rewards toward real-life training gear, too!

Aaptiv - For working out

Apple’s Covid-19 app - For staying healthy & in-the-know

Scrambled Egg Toast with Roasted Asparagus

INGREDIENTS:

INSTRUCTIONS:

• 1 pound thin asparagus spears — hard ends trimmed • 1/2 tablespoon olive oil • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt — divided • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper — divided • 4 slices eureka! Organic Bread • 8 large eggs • 1/4 cup nonfat milk • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter • 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan — plus additional for serving • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives — plus additional for serving

• Place one rack in the center of your oven and the other towards the top (I did the second from the topmost). Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Lay the asparagus in the center of a baking sheet, drizzle with the olive oil, and sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Toss to coat, then spread the spears into a single layer. Roast for 15 to 20 minutes on the center rack, until the asparagus is crisp-tender. Remove the baking sheet from the oven, then turn the oven to broil. • Arrange the bread slices on a second baking sheet. Broil on the upper rack for 30 seconds to a few minutes, until golden (watch carefully so the bread doesn’t burn—the time can vary greatly by broiler. Don’t walk away!), then flip the slices and toast the other side. Remove from the oven and set aside. • Meanwhile, in a medium mixing bowl, beat the eggs, milk, and remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper in a figure 8 pattern until completely blended. In a medium nonstick pan, melt the butter over medium-low. Once the butter has melted, reduce the heat to low and add the beaten eggs. Let cook, stirring very gently with a silicone spatula. Continuing cooking, stirring the eggs gently and often to keep them moving, until they are cooked but still soft, about 10 to 12 minutes. Stir in the Parmesan and chives. Taste and add additional salt and/or pepper as desired. To serve, top each slice of toast with a big scoop of scrambled eggs and a handful of asparagus spears. Sprinkle with additional Parmesan and/or chives as desired. Enjoy immediately.
