What Do I Do in September For My Kid’s Schooling? Andrew Thomas B.Ed (Hons) M.Phil NPQH Principal Al Ain English Speaking School
will send our kids back to you.” Now, I hear this not just from my own parents, but from parents wanting to cross from us from other schools here in Al Ain. However, let’s look at this in detail from my point of view as a Principal and a parent. Principals need to plan, staff and resource their schools according to the registered numbers of students well before the new term starts. By May, this is normally finalised. There is a false belief that parents can register with a cheaper school for distance learning, and will get the same quality, before switching back to their previous school, when the school is open in full. There simply will not be the required number of staff available and already, schools are closing registrations to parents who move schools for this period. It’s simple maths and your child will not be able to transfer back for the rest of the year, and will they really get the same quality? You could seriously be damaging your child’s education for a few dirhams, albeit important right now for the family household.
Parents, teachers and students all face the uncertainty of what will happen next, and what will occur in September of this year: The new academic school year. Whilst we all want clarity, we cannot blame governments, agencies or officials, as there is a simple answer to trying to answer the unknown: we don’t know! This is uncharted waters and we need to accept this. So, let’s try to second guess what is next and try and plan for that move to ensure our students and children get the best education they can. This is not an easy task as a Principal! Naturally we want our kids back to school full time, and as a father and a Principal I make this comment, but, assuming we might not be back to school as we all desire, I share with you the following observations and thoughts. Let’s start with the obvious, that many parents will have considered but maybe haven’t thought through it in its entirety: School fees.
Schooling will change in September, for sure, and it is important that we all accept this. Hygiene rules may see policies such as no school bags, or even no school uniform, where staff can monitor pupils changing clothes to reduce the risk of the virus spreading. This would also apply to staff.
I have been told by parents that they will seek a cheaper school for their children, if we are to return to school with distance learning. I hear, “We love the school, but we are not paying for online anymore, when we can get it cheaper elsewhere. When you return to normal, we The Source

home and such rules will prohibit teachers from taking them home to mark. Schools may look at a requirement of older students bringing in a laptop or Chromebook to school to allow for online marking and homework to exist safely, and what do we do about younger students sharing pencils and pens, where social distancing is something that only exists when they are tucked up in bed?
in all this, but please consider the most important investment you will make in your children’s education. Likewise, as a parent, you know your children and you will have to make those very difficult decisions, and when schools do open their doors again, some of you will welcome this with open arms, with some of you nervous and anxious about their health and safety. When that happens, turn off the What’s App school group; turn off your Face Book parent page; turn off all your social media feeds that will inevitably criticise your decision: you will not get it right according to the other ‘experts’. However, know that many teachers, and Principals, are parents too. We get it! Please don’t fall into the trap of berating others and judging other parents who make the decision opposite to yours. Please also don’t ‘beat up’ your school too, for doing what they have done. Principals will follow their heads and hearts as well as government guidelines and do whatever it takes to secure the education of our children.
Parents may be required to stay outside of the school grounds, and schools will look to see how children of the younger years can be dismissed safely without the usual line up of parents present: it’s a potential headache for us all, but we need to accept that we need to work together: Schools with parents, and parents’ with schools. No matter what school your child goes to, I would urge parents to stay loyal to your school. Your child knows their teacher, and more importantly, your child’s teacher knows your child; how they learn; how they think and how they feel. They care about them.
The current climate does not allow for normal education, and likewise, the current climate does not allow for distance learning to exist forever. There will be a new normal, even if temporarily, but we all must embrace and more importantly, accept the changes that will and have to occur to get us back to where we all want to be. Just don’t short-change your children’s education for a matter of a few quid! It might not be what you want, but it might just be the best overall for your child in the long run and ensure the very survival of the school which you and your children value.
More so, you will ensure your school’s future and your child’s education. The grass is not always greener on the other side and could cause problems now or in the future. This is not a simple case of cheaper shopping where you can buy a non-branded fruit over a Del Monte brand. This is not the same as having your car serviced by a local garage over a dealer. I’m sure like myself, you have tried the supermarket’s own Cornflakes over your favourite brand, as they are cheaper. Did they taste the same? No, and you only feel disgust, vowing never to repeat this mistake again. But this is about your child’s education. Please don’t play with it. They are more sensitive than they have ever been, requiring stability of known staff and friends right now. They need stability, just as much as our pockets do: I understand.

Andrew gained his Master of Philosophy degree through the study of technology in education and has delivered many conference speeches on technology in education, including BETT Middle East, and at the British Educational Research Association. I know some of you will say that it’s, “Easy,” for me to say this, and I know that some of you will need to balance the family books too 11

Nasa’s first human spaceflight launched from U.S. soil in nearly a decade Astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken have taken off on the historic first space flight of a commercial company crew using Nasa’s iconic base.
The launch comes as the US is suffering from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic and violent protests against the deaths of African Americans killed in police encounters.

Words by Dennie Wallace, Founder of Wallace & Co.
How fragrance can influence your state of mind
Aromatherapy is found in many cultures and is seen as a wonderful natural remedy to soothe the human psyche. Smell is one of the most powerful and sensitive senses, with the ability to transport you to a memory or time with the simplest of scents. During different states of mind, you can actually enhance or aid your mood simply by taking a whiff of certain natural and essential oils, whether it is found in a perfume, incense, oil burner, candle, kanikin or reed diffuser. And with the current situation, now is the perfect time to embrace scent in your every day. As the founder of aromatherapy brand, Wallace & Co., here are some of my go-to scents to aid or enhance different moods throughout the day:
For anger
As working from home can cause stress levels to rise, anger can easily seep into your day with one wrong message. Calm these negative feelings through citrus and lemon scents, which have clarifying properties. Ylang-ylang has also been seen as a natural sedative, perfect if you feel your temper start to rise.
For a pick me up
Rosemary and cinnamon are the perfect pick me up, especially at the start of the week when you might feel less than energized. The smell of rosemary can offer improvement in memory as well as can reduce headaches, battle exhaustion and aid with possible mental fatigue. Cinnamon on the other hand also has properties which can improve your focus.
For happiness
A lot of people love the smell of freshly cut grass as it reminds them of happy, summer days. This is why scents with grassy notes, such as cedar, vetiver and oakmoss, can have a positive impact on your mental state, increasing your feelings of happiness.
If you have a cold
Peppermint, eucalyptus and tea tree can be found in many cold and flu medicines as they have healing properties that can assist in clearing sinuses. Try deeply inhaling the steam from a bowl of warm water that has a few drops of any of these essential oils and you will be feeling better in no time.
To reduce stress and increase relaxation
Lavender and jasmine are most commonly used in aromatherapy for relaxation. The fragrance from the oils of the lavender and jasmine plants are believed to help promote calmness and wellness. Lavender is also said to help reduce stress, anxiety, and possibly even mild pain while jasmine has properties that promote optimism and has uplifting qualities.
Your emotions can be interconnected with scent so next time you have a certain feeling, why not try using different aromas that correspond with it. You might just reach a whole new level of bliss! For more information, visit www.wallaceand.co
A sensual feeling
Warm and woody, the scent of amber creeps up as the body warms up. As an oil, amber can enhance intimacy by upping blood circulation and revitalizing hormones. The scent is sultry and seductive without being too overpowering.
For romance
Vanilla is a scent we all recognize — it’s sweet, warm and soothing. It’s also a natural amative. Historically — from the Mayans to the French — the scent has been connected to romance and passion. Its sweetness can also reduce drowsiness and help ease tension and stress. 17

How to Help Your Children Thrive with Remote Schooling Tips from the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority TRY TO STICK TO A ROUTINE Before any routine, it is important to take a step back and consider how easy it will be to stick to. Keeping a normal consistent routine for young children can be a stress reliever. To ensure a sense of normality for children, plan a routine that mimics a normal day at school or nursery by incorporating playtime, arts and crafts, fun activities that involve other family members and reading. When planning a schedule, it is important to remember that things do not always go to plan, so try not to live by the clock and be flexible to adapt to changes when needed.
As a result of the current situation, families are facing extended periods of social distancing. To help families enjoy their time together, Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority offers parents guidance on how to help their children thrive at remote schooling and tips on how to engage children effectively. There is a huge difference between elective ‘homeschooling’ and adapting to it very unexpectedly, but there many ways families can balance multiple children’s workloads whilst considering each child’s individual needs and keeping on top of learning schedules. During this time, it is important to recognise that this is an abnormal situation to be in, so be kind to yourself and look at the positives in every situation.
WHAT IF MY CHILD FALLS BEHIND? Planning is a blessing for many parents, and setting and sticking to short term, realistic and achievable goals creates a calmer household. At the same time, it is important not to get overwhelmed by the thought that your child may fall behind. You can do some trials and ask an expert to find the right balance and the suitable environment that will improve you child’s skills.
TALK ABOUT IT Children easily pick up on conversations and uncertainty parents might be experiencing. As a result, this can lead to changes in a child’s behaviour, schooling and overall wellbeing. It is important to regulate the content that is seen on the news and discussed during phone conversations with friends and family.
If your child is not adapting to a set period of online learning, then adapt to spreading the work little and often across the day. It is important to recognise that this period is also a huge transition for children to adapt to as well. Children may also be facing anxieties, so it is important to not add to them by setting overly high expectations during this abnormal situation.
Try to take those conversations away from children to help reduce unnecessary worry. Talk to children about any fears or worries they might have and validate their feelings by addressing any questions that come up. During this time especially, it is important to create an honest and calm space for children to address concerns.

VEOLIA MIDDLE EAST ANNOUNCES TOP TIPS AND ART CONTEST TO HELP PRESERVE CLIMATE AND NATURE The first week of June brings the opportunity for people around the world to reflect on the importance of preserving the environment and oceans. With World Environment Day taking place on 5th June and World Oceans Day taking place on 8th June, there is no better time to show support for the beauty of the environment, the freshness of the oceans and the significance of the world’s nature.
A beach cleanup is a great step toward helping marine life. It is a volunteer activity for individuals and takes place regularly along coastlines around the world. There are several organisations across the region that run programmes in the cooler months, to help make beaches a cleaner and safer place for everyone. Taking part in beach clean ups helps to improve the coastal and ocean ecosystem by making sure that none of the waste kills marine life or is toxic enough to disrupt the marine cycle.
According to EarthDay, it is estimated that 40% of the world’s waste ends up in uncontrolled dump sites, causing excessive waste to overflow directly into oceans. This growing problem of mismanaged waste means that by 2025, dumpsites and landfills will contribute to 8-10% of global greenhouse emissions and by 2050, marine plastic will outweigh the number of fish in the sea. As awareness increases globally, the Middle East is taking important and impactful steps to help improve sustainable development across the region, such as increasing green areas, developing water resources, and improving marine environment and protecting it from pollution. Marine wildlife in the Middle East is particularly lush: green turtles, humpback dolphins, sea snakes and dugongs are all found in the Gulf waters, we have to protect them and their ecosystem.
Cut down on plastic
The mass production of plastic started decades ago and in recent years, it has accelerated so rapidly that it has created 8.3 billion metric tons and 91% of that is not recycled most of it ends up in landfills and oceans. This is a huge problem for the planet as plastic can take up to 1000 years to degrade, therefore, a lot of the world’s plastic still exists in some

which contributes to the global climate crisis. Commercial fishing uses a variety of methods to catch fish, including trawling, gillnets and longlines, which end up catching more than the targeted species, like sharks, whales, dolphins, turtles, and other endangered fish. The unwanted, injured catch is then discarded back into the sea, putting further strain on species.
form and only 12% has been incinerated. To help reduce the use of plastic, try adopting these simple lifestyle changes: ● Stop using plastic straws, even in restaurants. If a straw is a must, purchase a reusable stainless steel or glass straw. ● Always use a reusable bag when you go shopping, like a cloth tote shopper. Remember, a single plastic bag can take 1,000 years to degrade. ● Prepare lunches in reusable containers, like glass Tupperware, and always choose f r e s h fruits and veggies. Opting to buy bulk goods is a great way to cut back on unwanted cardboard, tin and plastic packages. ● Carry a reusable bottle or mug for beverages on the go and at work ● Switch to a bamboo toothbrush. Not only does a bamboo toothbrush eliminate unnecessary waste but it also ensures the same quality of cleaning that a plastic brush offers.
This high demand for seafood is driving some species towards extinction and causing the entire ecosystem to suffer. To help protect oceans and marine life, eliminate fish from diets or refrain from eating fish daily. The food system is also responsible for a third of global greenhouse gas emissions. Making simple changes to eating habits, like avoiding fish or meat, can have a huge impact on carbon footprint.
Conserve water
Although 71% of the Earth is covered in water, only 3% of the Earth’s water is freshwater and just 0.5% is suitable for drinking. With rapid growing population rates and such a small percentage of the Earth’s water suitable for drinking, it is fundamental to preserve and conserve water as much as possible. Preserving water minimises the effects of drought and water shortages, helps preserve the environment, ensures water is available for recreational purposes and builds safe communities. There are various simple tips that can be practiced at home to help preserve water, including taking shorter showers, installing water-saving shower heads or flow restrictors, turning off the water whilst brushing teeth, using dishwashers and washing machines for only full loads and checking pipes and faucet for leaks. Helping create a sustainable Earth is important to every person on the planet. By adopting green lifestyle changes to daily routines, a sustainable and safer planet will be created for future generations to come, ensuring a brighter and cleaner future for all.
Cut back on fish
Commercial fishing practices are overfishing to keep up with demands, resulting in populations too depleted to fully recover, 21

How to stay motivated while studying/working remotely
Aakanksha Tangri
We’re in the midst of an unprecedented situation — only a few months ago we were going to the mall, hanging out with friends, and going to school or the office. Normal life as we know it has changed and COVID-19 not only brings with it physical challenges but also is taking a toll on our mental well-being. While previously we would find excuses to cancel plans, it’s now not uncommon to promise ourselves “when all this ends, I’m never turning down an invite again.” We’re all adjusting to our new realities which include working and studying from home, and it can be hard to focus when your bed or comfy couch are right there as well as the whole family buzzing around. So how exactly are you meant to be productive during this time? Here, Aakanksha Tangri, founder of Re:Set, the online resource providing tools and stories around education, parenting, gender, inclusivity, mental health and well-being, provides some simple ways to stay motivated while you work or study from home. Routine, routine, routine! There will be days where you won’t feel like leaving your bed or being productive, and it’s important to allow yourself to have that time and space to recover. This is a situation we’re all adjusting to on a daily basis, so it’s only natural to feel low every once and awhile. However, the best thing to do at this time is to set a routine — if you used to wake up at 7 am before, do that now. Leave your bed, dress up for the day like you previously would (or at least change out of your pajamas into comfortable track pants), and carry out your routine like you used to. It’ll give you a sense of normalThe Source

dining table, your couch or even the balcony when weather permits. When you are at this designated spot, you’ll know it’s time for you to work and you’ll have a sense of consistency to keep you going even when everything around you has changed.
Make each other accountable Share with a family member, colleague or classmate the challenges you’re facing, your to-do list and deadlines and make them hold you accountable. This way if you’re feeling less than motivated, you have someone who can check in on you and keep you on track. If you’re in school, give online group study sessions a shot — it’ll make you feel connected to your friends while at the same time you can all be productive together and even take breaks at the same time like you did when you were on campus.
Think long-term and plan for the future With the lack of timelines around containing COVID-19, it can all feel like a blur and be demotivating. While that’s understandable, allow yourself space and permission to think longterm and get excited about making plans for the future. What do you want to achieve next year? What are the steps you can take in the present moment to reach your goals? Looking to the future and everything you still want to do can help motivate you on days you’re feeling low. It can be as simple as telling yourself you’ll go to your favourite restaurant when all this is over or apply for that internship. Setting long-term goals will give you something to work toward and take your mind off of the current situation.
Small tasks matter Even the small tasks matter and can help you feel productive and motivated. Something as simple as making your bed in the morning is “correlated with better productivity and a greater sense of well-being.” Try to tackle one small task at a time such as putting your clothes in the wash, finishing a chapter or even writing 500 words for that paper that’s due — this will not only help cross items off your to-do list, but you’ll also feel productive.
Find delight in the everyday In these uncertain times, it is important to find joy in the every day to stay motivated. We all need to take the time to feel good and break up the monotony, so find something you enjoy and make sure you carve time out of your day just for you. Try meditation, partaking in an at-home workout or just listen to your favourite music. When you are feeling low, turn to friends and family to talk about what you might be going through. Of course, there are also many online resources, such as Re:Set, that are there to support you and offer solutions, education and words of encouragement via community conversations when times get tough. Just try to remember we are all in this together.
Schedule Create a schedule and try sticking to it as much as possible. If you’re an early riser or you work best at night, factor that in. You can’t change your habits overnight. A schedule will also ensure you don’t get distracted and binge-watch a show or take naps in the middle of the workday just because you’re at home. That said, do make sure you factor in breaks and time for you to reset yourself mentally and physically as this is equally important for your mental health and well-being. Find a space This can be particularly hard with all family members at home, but designate a space where you will work from whether that’s the

Mars Hope Probe Due to Launch 15 July The Emirates Mars Mission, the first interplanetary exploration undertaken by an Arab nation, today announced the scheduled launch of its Mars Hope Probe in a 495,000,000km journey to reach and orbit the Red Planet. The countdown to the launch begins after the probe’s successful transfer from the UAE to Japan, in a journey that spanned more than 83 hours by land, air and sea. As planned, the world will see the Hope Probe launch into space on Wednesday, 15 July 2020 at 00:51:27 UAE time (05:51:27, Japan time) from Japan’s Tanegashima Space Centre, leveraging the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI H2A) platform. The scheduled launch date represents the opening of the launch window for the Emirates Mars Mission, which extends to the 13th August 2020. The Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ (MHI H2A) platform was chosen as a result of its proven expertise and reputation in space technology around the world, and its high success rates in launching spacecraft and satellites globally. The UAE, for its part, has previously collaborated with MHI to successfully launch the Khalifa Sat satellite.
Omar Al Shehhi will also be part of the core team overseeing the launch of the probe into space via the H-IIA H2A missile. Her Excellency Sarah Bint Youssef Al-Amiri, Minister of State for Advanced Sciences and Emirates Mars Mission Deputy Project Manager, said: “The challenges overcome by the Hope Probe team amidst the global pandemic confirm the UAE mission’s commitment to achieve the impossible. It is a mentality that has now been embedded within the current and future generations. This mission embodies the nation’s aspirations, sends a positive message to the world and demonstrates the importance of carrying on unabated despite barriers and challenges.”
Meticulous Processing Since its successful arrival at TNSC in Japan, the Hope Probe has undergone detailed processing operations for the launch. This process completed over 50 working days, entails filling the fuel tank with about 700 kilograms of hydrogen fuel and ensuring there are no leaks. The process also requires testing the communication and control devices, moving the probe to the launch pad, installing the probe on the rocket that will carry it to space, and ensuring the probe batteries are fully charged.

She continued: “Our team continues to work diligently to ensure the mission’s success, and we look forward to collectively celebrate the arrival of the probe on Mars in February 2021 – also coinciding with our 50-year anniversary”.
commitment to strengthening frameworks of international cooperation and finding solutions to global challenges for humanity’s benefit. The first Arab-Islamic project to explore other planets, the mission carries a message of hope to revive a history rich in Arab achievements in science. Embodying the aspiration of the UAE, and its leadership to overcome the impossible, the Hope Probe is the nation’s contribution to shaping and making a promising future for humanity.
83 hours from Dubai to Japan The journey of moving the Hope Probe from Dubai to the launch site on Tanegashima Island in Japan spanned more than 83 hours and underwent three major stages.
The Hope Probe is anticipated to enter Mars’ orbit in February 2021, coinciding with the UAE’s golden jubilee celebrations to mark the historic union of the emirates.
The first phase involved the preparation and transportation of the probe from the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Center to Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport, which spanned 16 hours. The second stage saw the probe’s 11-hour transfer from Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai to Nagoya Airport in Japan and included loading the probe and its supporting equipment into the giant ‘Antonov 12’ plane - the largest cargo plane in the world. In light of the challenges posed by COVID-19, internationally approved stringent health procedures were followed to safeguard the health and safety of the team in Dubai, as well as the team accompanying the probe on its flight to Japan. In addition, a third team traveled earlier and underwent the mandatory quarantine procedures in Japan prior to receiving the probe upon arrival and oversee its transportation to the launch station. The third stage was the probe’s transfer from Nagoya Airport to the launch site on Tanegashima Island. It included the probe’s safe landing and land transportation to Shimama Harbor, and its final transfer by sea to Tanegashima Island. The Hope Probe is a national project that translates the vision of the UAE’s leadership to build an Emirati space program that reflects the country’s

TOP TIPS TO KEEP YOUR FACE MASK CLEAN What fabric is suitable for a face mask? Cotton fabric is the perfect material for a face mask. With an ideal thread count of about 200 with up to three layers of fabric, this material is effective in filtering out the virus as well as blocking any pathogens from entering. With the strict protocol of wearing the face mask while on the move, it is essential to be comfortable with your face mask and the cotton fabric provides the right amount of breathability. It is also recommended to use white color masks that can be washed in higher temperatures.
With face masks becoming mandatory across the UAE, it is important to ensure you keep your mask clean, in order to maximize its effectiveness. Damodaran Sivakumar, Head of Production at 5àsec UAE, world leader in laundry operating in Dubai, says: “Since we need to wear face masks to slow the spread of COVID-19, residents have taken it as a normal part of life, but there are just a handful who know how to keep them clean. The dos and don’ts of maintaining hygiene, especially when it comes to face masks, is of utmost importance.
How should you handle your face mask after use? Upon returning home, we recommend that the first thing you do is take off your mask carefully and place it in the laundry bin until you can wash it. You may opt to leave it in the bin for 24 hours or more in quarantine, which is known to allow the virus to decay. Do not let the mask come into contact with any other family member.
“Using the same cloth mask daily without cleaning it will not shield you from the virus and may actually have the opposite effect.” Here, 5àsec, six key tips for maintaining the effectiveness of your face masks: How often do you need to wash your face mask? Your face mask should be washed regularly. We cannot stress on that enough. The virus may stay active on fabric for a long period of time, which makes it absolutely necessary to wash your face mask at least once a day. If you suspect that someone you have been in close contact with is infected, you should put the mask to wash immediately and use a fresh one. Apart from the virus, the masks also tend to collect any sweat, oil or makeup from skin, which may also affect your health.
The Source
How can you disinfect cloth masks? A machine wash at a high temperature with quality detergents is good enough to kill the virus. However, if you want to avoid running a machine load just for a single mask, you can also toss in your clothing items that you wore to step-out as well. If you prefer to hand-wash your mask, ensure that you get into every inch of the mask and 28
clean it using the correct amount of chemical. Additionally, soaking the mask in hot water for 10-minutes and then rinsing it thoroughly, will also help to remove all the pathogens. Avoid using bleach completely as the constant smell can cause nausea and headaches.
fective dryer. Sunlight is another excellent natural sanitizing agent. Since the starting temperature of an average household iron is 140 degrees Celsius, ironing the mask post-drying will provide an added measure to ensure that the virus is completely eliminated.
What is the appropriate temperature to wash a face mask? Viruses cannot withstand high temperatures, therefore, washing face masks at a temperature of more than 60 degrees help disinfect the mask. Since fabrics with dark colors fade after a couple of washed at high temperatures, it is advisable to make or buy the fabric mask in lighter shades.
For those who are super busy and need to focus on managing household chores and kids’ online education, 5àsec offers ‘contactless’ expert cleaning services at the touch of a button for your clothes, linens and cloths masks. The sustainable laundry app is renowned for a premium service and outlets can be found at multiple locations across Dubai and Abu Dhabi. For more information, download the 5àsec app or visit https://5asec.ae/
How should a face mask be dried? After washing your mask, it is best to dry it at a high temperature since heat also sanitizes the mask. For masks with a plastic filter and valve, you will need to be extra careful and air-dry or sun-dry them. A hairdryer can also be used as an easy and ef-

Bridge Over Troubled Waters How will you PIVOT in 2020?
When you’re weary, feeling small, when tears are in your eyes, I’ll dry them all. I’m on your side, when times get rough and friends just can’t be found. Like a bridge over troubled water, I will lay me down.
be, a space the future has been demanding of us for some time yet many feared to go. Picture yourself in a precarious situation, clinging to a cliff face that towers over a deep canyon; it’s here where only two choices exist: do or die. And once you’ve chosen ‘do’, any and all action will be powered by urgency, focus and precision. COVID-19 has dragged us all from the plateau of business comfort, that dangerous place with the luxury of time, multiple attempts and unlimited resources. 2020 is no longer a dress rehearsal.
The all-time classic song from Simon and Garfunkel, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, is likely to feel like a corporate ‘achilles heel’ snapping. Business consortia, owners and teams face unlimited challenges in the path of COVID-19 destruction: diminished demands for previously sought-after products, a lack of essential resources due to a challenged supply chain, a lack of market confidence in the future, essential restructuring and downsizing, restricted social contact to name but a few.
This space is a great place to ensure you separate the business issue from the cause of that issue; one is reality and the other generated or revealed the reality. Are you focusing on the issue of portfolio relevancy or the market’s restricted movement, the issue of antiquated systems or the downturn in business, the issue of market opportunity or lack of consumer confidence? This does not have to be a long, drawnout process yet clarity is vital to allow the result of your plan to serve your pivot point.
As a consequence, some businesses are simply shutting doors, all but given up hope. Then there’s a rare few which are flying high on the unintentional yet rather fortuitous business proposition COVID afforded to them; take for example those who refit hospitals back into an original hotel state, those who provide elearning infrastructures or those who create retail plastic shields. The bulk of business however is willing to make change, yet are perplexed as to where to start for adaptation in order to survive.
If an arrow shot from a bow knocks down the haystack, is it the fault of the arrow, or the inefficiency of the haystack’s design? What matters today, right here right now?
To ‘pivot’ is to twist, turn or even toss in a confined space to result in differing outcomes. Pivoting works with what exists in order to manipulate and maximize. COVID-19 has given business little room to squirm yet much opportunity to pivot. When doing so, the following are key to actions and decisions. COVID-19 has taken business to the edge, the exact space we all need to

What do the people who interact with your business need? What’s hidden deep within the capability of your business that might address that? What do you have that can be repurposed, repackaged and introduced to attract attention? What consequences will that attract? Ensure your pivot works with what exists, and the externaI environment is one not to be forgotten or marginalized. If your pivot does not increase demand, you likely repurposed out of alignment with the environment. If there’s no change of behavior within the organization, it’s likely you weren’t surrendering to the new norm. Both simply equate to footsteps on that cliff face creating loose rubble under your feet, a sobering thought indeed.
from the bulk of chicken feathers. Urgency, focus and precision carried Hans to success, a feat which millions of people around the world celebrate even til today. Crises such as COVID-19 have us all coming face to face with ourselves. We will never be immune to crises in business, and neither should we approach them with an air of invincibility. Rather, as Debbie Nicol, managing director of ‘business en motion’ demonstrates, when a structured thinking and development process is applied to an evolving set of non-negotiables for today’s changing world, struggling business will create a customized option for a pivoted business future. No longer shall the rough waters be troubled but rather rippled from essential adaptation.
Isolated, all-encompassing expertise was always an illusion in business. Partnerships are vital to enhance your surrounding environment with missing resources or capability. Yet, there’s no room for misaligned or unbalanced reactive partnerships; those will neither sustain nor serve. True business partnerships are so in sync they almost defy the reality of difference while transcending all barriers. The commitment to shared beliefs and goals is so strong that ‘we’ overrides the focus of ‘me’. The more that’s known about partners, the more relationships and business results can prosper. Yet is there time for that now?

Challenge is the crucible of true business leaders. Just as Hans Akerblom, creator of Healon®, the substance that is used even today in cataract surgery, hit his challenge many years ago when the one vital element for a global supply had only one source, that being the one last centimeter of a chicken quill which separates the chicken body’s flesh

How do you get back to work after the ease of lock-down? Claire Donnelly, Senior Consultant at Mike Hoff Consulting
It is a testament to the hard work of the UAE Government that restrictions are lifting enough to allow Employees to start returning to work, maintain new guidelines on physically distancing and wearing face masks. Slowly lifting restrictions indicate the Government are maintaining their keen observation of the infection rate whilst starting to bring business back to life. The past months have been hugely challenging to Business owners, many of whom are now in survival mode. Dealing with COVID has certainly impacted people, many of whom were complete resistant at first to being forced to isolate/ work from home, obtain a movement permits to go to the shops and nightly curfews all down to a bad case of the flu! tragedy in countries around the world, many UAE based expats were in total admiration of the UAE’s immediate reaction, regardless of the economic impact. Some of us have had to deal with tragedy within our own families back home, never have we felt more removed from our home countries. Even our ability to fly back at a moment notice was put on hold. A lot of sacrifices have had to be made, but all for the greater good, as the UAEs infections and tragic loss of life numbers show just what happens when a country takes action early. In order to survive and ride this crisis, many Companies have had reduced their workforce down to the bear minimum, asked their dedicated team members to work on reduced salaries or go immediately onto unpaid holiday without knowing when they will be able to get them back to work. Companies are now able to ask their employees to go back to work, and here we are beginning to see a strange reaction, a reluctance of go back into work! Surely everyone will be keen to get back to normal? But the old normal is long past and COVID is still present, why would we want to put ourselves and families at risk by attending the office when we are managing fine working from home, so why do we need to change?
34
This is a good question. Many Employees are even more productive working remotely, so just why does a Company need to have people physically sitting in an office, feeling uncertain and nervous about an infection that is still present?
what can you do if these Employees are still reluctant to come into the workplace? Managers need to reflect very deeply on why it is essential to be present in the workplace, preparing a business case to put discuss with a reluctant Employee. Communication is key here, exactly what are the Employees concerns, many of which will be genuine, consider everything said and take action based on this.
Of course, some roles require a physical presence in the workplace. Companies need to consider their Employees safety at all times and should ask their Employees what they would like to see in the workplace to make them feel safe and secure.
There is a fine balance between acting on an Employees concerns/reluctance and maintaining business operations. If you reach a stalemate and you are convinced that the role needs to be physically in the workplace and the Employee refuses to attend, the only option open is to let the Employee go, which has to be the last option.
Companies may need to start thinking about phasing Employees in the workplace to allow travel at non busy times, perhaps arrange to pay for their transportation. What changes do they need to make to the workplace to ensure physical distancing and maintained sanitisation?
Employers need to have compassion and understanding at all times, this is an unprecedented situation, the world is changing daily, the news reports nothing else, before taking the final decision to let an Employee go, all their concerns need to be listened to and responded to.
Companies also need to ask themselves if it is actually required for their Employees to physically come into the office daily. Taking a breath before requesting Employees presence in the workplace should be taken. A short period of reflection to see what worked well and what did not, now is a perfect time to revisit the Companies workplace policies and introduce flexibility. Those Employees that have been working from home are likely to have their own space set up and functioning well, if this has worked and as we are all pretty much experts at using Zoom for meetings, do we really all need to be sitting in the same space to function as a team?

HOW TO MASTER THE ART OF TIE-DYE WITH There are tons of fun activities out there—but only one that leaves you with something you’ll want to wear. Here’s how to master the art of tie-dye:
Try it on socks, T-shirts, oxford shirts, sweatpants, or hoodies for relaxing at home—and, of course, you can’t go wrong with a cotton mesh Polo shirt.
Step 1: Get Your Kit Together Most craft stores sell dye kits with everything you need to get going—including cotton shirts (check to see if your local one offers curbside pickup). Or, if you’re looking for a more natural alternative, the US Forest Service has great information about creating your own natural dyes from local plant life.
Step 3: The Setup Prepare your dyes (each brand will have its own instructions), then soak your garments in warm water (with soda ash, if using) and gently wring them out — tie-dye works best when the fabric is damp, but not soaking wet. Put on your gloves and find a good space to work, like a bathtub, a large sink, or somewhere outside, and you’re ready to go.
Either way, here’s what you’ll need: • Colored dyes • Squeeze bottles • Rubber bands • Rubber gloves • Soda ash and dye fixative, for better color saturation (optional) • Something to dye!
Tip: If you have one, setting down a wire rack is helpful — it allows excess dye to neatly drip off your garment rather than pooling together on your work surface. Step 4: Tie It Together Grab your rubber bands and get to work! Try the standard swirl pattern by inching the center of a T-shirt or Polo and spiraling it tight, then rubber-banding it together to form triangular cross-sections. Pinch small sections and wrap rubber bands tightly around them
Step 2: Choose Your Canvas Go with garments made entirely—or at least mostly—from natural fibers like cotton, linen, and wool. The Source

instructions. Then, if you’re using a fixative, soak according to its instructions.
Or, bunch your garment together and apply your bands randomly to create an abstract design. Grab a few old tees—maybe even a sheet—and try just about anything else that comes to mind, and try to guess what the resulting pattern will be. Creativity is encouraged!
Then remove the rubber bands, unfold, and voilà—your new tie-dye! Tip: Be sure to rinse each piece of tie-dye thoroughly, then machine wash individually at least once to wash out any excess dye and prevent it from spreading onto the rest of your laundry.
Step 5: Add the Dye With your gloves on, grab your dye bottles and have at it! Try mixing and matching different colors onto the different sections that your rubber-band pattern has created. Repeat on all sides of your garment. Tip: A little bit of color blending is encouraged, but be careful—too much can muddy the overall result. Step 6: All Set … Place your garments into individual plastic bags and let rest according to your d ye ’s

The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) acquires internationally approved standard for managing soil quality monitoring programmes
It is the first organisation in the Middle East and Africa to acquire this certification.
work standards in our pursuit for excellence. This is always reflected in the outcome and accuracy of the output of the environmental monitoring programmes that we implement.”
EAD obtained compliance to ISO 16133: 2018 standard from the British Standards Institution (BSI) in the Middle East and Africa, after a successful audit of the agency’s soil quality monitoring programme and its soil database of Abu Dhabi.
Eng. Shaikha Al Hosani, Executive Director of the Environmental Quality Sector at EAD said: “In 2016, we prioritised soil and land protection within our institutional strategy. We also aimed to provide sustainable and integrated solutions to conserve the valuable natural resources of Abu Dhabi.”
This achievement reflects the commitment of the EAD to maintaining international standards while serving the environmental sector in Abu Dhabi. It is also an example of the agency’s leading role in enhancing environmental protection and sustainability, preserving the well-being of all human beings and ensuring a better quality of life for all.
She added: “One of EAD’s significant strategic goals is the focus on strengthening policies and developing legislative frameworks for soil quality protection.” Al Hosani noted: “Soil quality monitoring programmes are the first step in Abu Dhabi to protecting land and soil from deterioration. They also serve to provide accurate data that sheds light on the changes in soil quality over time, determine the impact of human activities and measure the risk level of pollution. Without these programmes, we will not be able to provide a timely response to mitigate change and measure the effect on human health and the environment.”
Speaking about the certification, Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, EAD’s Secretary-General said: “We are very proud of this achievement and the ISO 16133: 2018 certification is an important addition to the list of ISO certifications that EAD has received in recent years. According to BSI, we are the first institution in the MEA region to receive this international certification, and be recognised for our specialisation in the field of implementing soil quality monitoring programmes.”
Eng. Bayan Athamneh, Manager of the Soil Quality Section of EAD said: “Since 2018, we began the implementation of a program to monitor and assess soil quality in Abu Dhabi. We especially measured

soil. Our work sets a precedent not only on a regional level, but also globally.”
We monitored more than 270 sites throughout the emirate, and more than 570 soil samples per year were collected and evaluated to identify potential pollutants that are caused by different types of land use.
“We recently launched a pilot project to monitor and control soil quality using drones and advanced remote sensing technologies (hyperspectral images). We also integrated artificial intelligence (AI) models for data analysis.”
“The programme monitors heavy metals, pesticides, and levels of petroleum hydrocarbons. The results of this programme are the basis for our future land management plans, and a prelude to the development of policies, regulations and legislation for soil protection and rehabilitation.”
She added: “The results of this project will pave the way for a wealth of specialised research to enhance soil quality monitoring methodologies and rehabilitation solutions. Moreover, the results will provide a basis for additional research and be a main resource for a database that can utilise the remote sensing data and artificial intelligence techniques.”
Athamneh added: “We are always pioneering various leading initiatives, which asserts our role in protecting land and

Al Ain Zoo intensifies its precautionary efforts to protect wildlife Al Ain Zoo recently implemented precautions for its animals according to international best practices, including activating an early epidemiological monitoring system and business continuity plans in the veterinary department for emergency cases. However, now that the region is passing through the situation of the COVID-19 emergency, the Zoo is beginning to lift biosecurity measures. The Zoo was keen to activate the preventive plans and procedures in line with government guidelines and the advice offered by scientific experts to prevent the virus. Procedures included special, around-theclock care for wildlife and animals while continuing to provide full feeding and working to enhance their behavior and continue training. Ensuring their safety while maintaining the usual high standard of care was critical during the COVID-19 situation.
49
Additionally, the Zoo’s veterinary team continues to provide comprehensive care for various types of animals around the clock by constantly examining them and providing sufficient quantities of viral antiseptics. A strategic stock of veterinary medical supplies for emergencies and equipment for Zoo personnel – along with providing them with continuing awareness, instructions and taking all necessary precautions – has avoided the transmission of the disease from human to animal or from animal to human. It is worth noting that the Zoo continues to implement major projects at the Elephant Safari, Elephant Exhibit, Gorilla Sanctuary, Reptile Park, Koala Land, Chimpanzee Forest, Al Ain Nature Reserve, Sand Cat Conservation Center, Rescue Center, Event Pavilion and Penguin Beach. In these unusual circumstances, Al Ain Zoo strives to protect and preserve wildlife by providing comprehensive care using the best international practices under the supervision of top doctors and specialists in natural wildlife care.

Al Ain Zoo celebrates World Turtle Day On May 20th, Al Ain Zoo celebrated the International Day of the Oldest Creatures on Earth, which is also known as “World Turtle Day,” to encourage international humanitarian action to conserve and protect turtles and draw attention to the vulnerability of certain species. World Turtle Day is an annual event that has been taking place since 2000 and was founded by American Tortoise Rescue. The purpose of World Turtle Day is to educate people about how to protect turtle and tortoise habitats. Despite the prevailing belief that turtles are slow, while they can indeed only crawl between 0.21 and 0.48 km per hour, they can swim in water at speeds of up to 35 km per hour. The Al Ain Zoo includes 10 types of turtles, including Aldabra Giant, African Stirred tortoise, Red Ear Slider and Indian Star tortoise. 35 of African Spurred tortoise (Centrochelys Sulcate) turtles that are the third-largest species of tortoise in the world and the largest species of mainland tortoise, were added to the Al Ain Safari, the largest man-made safari in the world. They live in an environment similar to their natural one, with more than 400 free African animals without restrictions or cages in an area of 217 hectares. The Al Ain Zoo seeks with many local and international strategic partners to develop effective programs for the conservation and preservation of nature by following international best practices for protecting wildlife, particularly endangered animals.
