Fasting heals the brain and body Dr Saliha Afridi, Clinical Psychologist and Managing Director of The Lighthouse Arabia
While many enjoy the reflective, spiritual, and community aspects that are part of this month, they struggle with moodiness and fatigue, which they attribute to lack of food or water during the day. The truth is that being ‘moody’ and ‘tired’ probably is the result of people experiencing withdrawals from addictive substances, dehydration, poor sleep, lack of exercise, and eating poorly at sunset. The research is conclusive: fasting, when done right, is healing and restorative for your physical health. Here are some benefits you should know about fasting and your physical health. Fasting turns on autophagy - Autophagy is fundamental to the body cleaning, healing, and rebuilding itself. The digestive system uses 40-50% of the body’s energy. When the body gets time off of digesting food, it kicks on its rest and recovery system and starts to clean and heal itself of bacteria and viruses, dead and deteriorated cells, and damaged proteins. A lack of autophagy is linked to most mental and physical health problems. Fasting reduces inflammation. Inflammation is the root cause of many mental and physical health diseases such as depression, anxiety, diabetes, auto-immune disease, multiple sclerosis, and IBS. Fasting reduces monocytes in the blood, which are the cells that cause inflammation in the blood. Fasting improves mood and stress levels. Fasting helps to stabilize the cortisol and reduce stress, tension, anger, confusion, and depression. Some might think that fasting makes them more tired and less focused, but scientifically speaking, abstaining from food and water for a certain peThe Source

riod of the day, cannot result in people feeling tired and less focused. What they are most likely describing is the first week of detoxing, or poor habits they adopt during the month of Ramadan, such as eating heavy late at night, staying up all night, and not focusing on their hydration. If done right and with consideration, you will find yourself with more energy and more clarity. Fasting improves learning and memory by increasing brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), related to improved learning capacity, and memory. Fasting reduces blood pressure. Hypertension or prehypertension lowers blood flow to the brain. Low blood flow to the brain has been seen with depression, bipolar disorder, ADD/ADHD, traumatic brain injury, substance abuse, and Alzheimer’s. Fasting regulates your blood pressure, improving overall health. The aforementioned benefits cannot be utilized if the person is not intentional with how they spend this month. Many of the bad habits (staying up all night, eating fried and heavy foods, drinking coffee late at night etc.) that are adopted during this month are culturally condoned and unhealthy, defeating the purpose of this month all together. If we fast with intention, and are mindful about what we are eating, staying hydrated, sleeping properly, and continuing on with our physical exercise, only then will we reap the benefits of this month.
Discover how the world was ‘mapped’ over the centuries at SBA’s ‘Tales from the East’ exhibition From maps produced for the kings of Spain and Portugal to a 12th century world map oriented with south at the top and a lifesize hand coloured photograph of a 15th century map of the world, the ‘Tales from the East’ exhibition organised by Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) at its headquarters in Sharjah, features a treasure trove of unique exhibits that shed light on the evolution of the science of cartography. When renowned Muslim scholar and traveller, Muhammad Al-Idrisi, was commissioned by King Roger II - the greatest of the Norman kings of Sicily, to create a map for him of the entire known world, it led to the creation of the magnum opus called the Tabula Rogeriana. Depicting the world from Iceland to China and Africa, and a host of countries in between. The strikingly detailed Tabula Rogeriana which remained among the world’s most accurate maps for nearly 300 years, featured mountains, lakes, rivers, and towns, as well as roads and distances. However, in the tradition of Islamic cartographers, Al-Idrisi drew it with south positioned at the top. ‘Tales from the East’ exhibition also features an equally fascinating example of the significant achievements of early modern cartography with Tunisian Hajji Ahmed’s ‘Fully Illustrated Exposition of the World in Its Entirety,’ created in an unknown workshop in Venice in 1559. A towering landmark of contemporary geographical
knowledge, this map is among the most extensive original Turkish-language geographical treatises to have survived from the 16Th century. This cordiform or heart-shaped world map features copious text, intricately and painstakingly inscribed along its outer margins. The text describes the four continents, the 12 great countries of the world paired with signs of the zodiac, as well as the seven greatest rulers in the world paired with planets. Three smaller maps at the bottom depict the celestial world. 13

A leader is drawn to challenge and change, because those conditions can bring meaning and purpose. With no paved pathway to a differing future, so many obstacles need to be navigated and so many risks are there for the taking. Yet a leader rarely, if ever stops, as the consequence of doing so is simply not worth bearing.
Yas Island Firework Extravaganza
Set to Light Up Eid al-Fitr
Struggle is the crucible of leaders; they prosper at the challenge it provides! Would a story of success (with a new technology, product or process) be worth telling if it was about an easy win? I hope Mama Turtle found herself a beautiful rock shelf under the sea for a well-earned rest this afternoon.
Trust those around you are ‘on your side’
Encounters of the leadership kind with Mama Turtle by Debbie Nicol Meandering through the shallows of the Persian Gulf waters, my lunchtime beach sojourn was rudely interrupted by a large, unexpected humped rock appearing on my path. And then it moved! For the next two hours, I was a frontrow VIP guest to a private matinee showing of Nature at her best! Mother Nature shares such poignant messages when those around are willing to listen. These are the lessons I’m taking away from this close-up and personal interlude with Mother Nature.
Know who you are and the place you best serve There was no urgency in Mama Turtle’s labored movement up the beach – only determined focus, one which was anchored in her innate intuition to find the safest place for eggs and hatchlings to have the best chance at life. She knew the eggs would need a quiet nest away from immediate danger, and thereafter for the hatchlings, direct access to the sea. She dug and dug and dug until the best possible nest existed. She knew who she was, she knew her role in Nature and she knew the benefits of being just that. There was no rush, just dogged determination. Great leaders are authentic. They serve through finding commonality with those around, creating conditions that will allow others to experience success. They know who they are, what they stand for and how the journey towards change will serve those around them well. They too are focused, and also driven to work through challenge in a way that serves all. Reputations are cemented in deliverables, and whatever is needed will be done to achieve success, regardless of the time and effort that takes.

Sense when the time and place is right Mama Turtle emerged from the sea at the moment I was passing that exact spot on the beach. There was nobody on the beach but me, the stiff breeze was not ideal for preying birds, the sunshine was not overly hot and the progress of humankind had conveniently left a 200-metre corridor from the furthest construction; these combined factors were synchronous for Mama Turtle. Leaders choose their time and space. They know their story, they know the hope their challenge brings, they know their resources – and they know they can choose to do what they wish with what they have. They create the ideal time and space for fortuitous results.
Be prepared to struggle for your best performance Mama Turtle deserves a gold medal for the struggle she faced today. From scaling a sandy, disintegrating cliff of sand to digging the deepest of nesting site with only four flippers, and a cracked shell covered in barnacles, all in the heat of a Middle Eastern day, shows the level of determination I witnessed today. Not often will a turtle nest by day, yet the reasons she did so today remain only known to her; clearly struggling during the midday sun was worthwhile for her.
Mama Turtle instinctively knew I posed no threat. I so wanted to help her up the bank, yet knew I had to hold back. I moved rocks out of her way and held back the thorny salt brush. She most likely didn’t need that help but I choose to think she appreciated it. Great leaders pay attention to the needs of those around them. This forges connectivity and instils trust, enabling trust to be contagious. Those who previously did not trust become ‘infected’, and transform into both trusting and trusted individuals. Trust is unspoken, and is an energy. Mama Turtle and I were ‘one’ today with an open forum for either party to be and do whatever they wished. Thankfully, the Mama had never seemingly encountered the ugly side of humanity previously. Surround yourself with Mother Nature often; ‘she’ has the propensity to provide you privileges many others may not seek nor accept. Just as leaders create conditions that are favorable for evolutionary progress in our organizations and lives, Mother Nature too invites us all to evolve and emerge bigger, brighter and better than we previously were. In the words of Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, co-authors of The Leadership Challenge, leadership is indeed everyone’s business and this Nature-based privilege I witnessed gave me enough evidence to realize that the deep sense of trust and co-operation true leadership provides is a currency that this world should adopt in the not-too-distant future. Let’s honor how Mother Nature is reminding us why we are here, and how we are all in ‘this’ together!

Changing the way the world eats one bite at a time Whether you are a plant-based eater, a vegetarian, a flexitarian, or are trying to reduce your weekly meat consumption, Future Farm is for you. Future Farm is a Brazilian FoodTech company that believes that innovation, taste, and sustainable development can coexist to make new opportunities for conscious consumption accessible and delicious in today’s day and age. The brand provides customers with sustainable, healthy, and environmentally friendly options when it comes to their daily food choices. Future Farm caters not only to plant-based eaters but also to those looking for alternative meal options with fewer calories, less fat while being gluten and GMO free. Future Farm products are made from 100% natural ingredients and are made from peas, soy, chickpeas and beetroot powder. Their products are available in four different varieties: burgers, mincemeat, meatballs, and sausages. The meaty and smoky flavors make them incomparable; such flavors can sometimes be missing in plant-based foods. Now available in Carrefour hypermarkets across the UAE, as well as Choithrams and online retailers such as Instashop, Spinneys, Waitrose, and ShopKitopi and Organic & Real. Find out more about their products below, and for more information, go to: https://www.futurefarm.io The Source
What does Future Farm have to say about the questions surrounding plant-based meat? The plant-based market is still very new in Brazil, and it’s common to come across a lot of competing and misguided opinions surrounding this movement. At Future Farm, we believe in developing new technologies capable of creating foods free from animal origins. Through our plant-based meat options that are similar in taste, texture and smell to that of meat, we want to prove how it’s truly possible to revolutionize the food industry without negatively impacting the environment. Most importantly, we want the consumer to understand that animal agriculture continues to expand, all while ignoring the associated problems of global warming, deforestation, and the effects on people’s lives. The fact remains that consuming meat generates an enormous negative impact on the planet. We want the world to become increasingly aware of this fact and opt for changes in their diet. Consuming more healthy products, such as the plant-based burger developed by Future Farm, are for these people. They want to have a more conscious life, without giving up what they like to eat. Does eating a plant-based diet mean being healthier? The short answer is yes! It means combining vegetables and other natural ingredients, then aligning it with a lot of research and technology. The end result, in the case of our plant-based burger for example, delivers the same attributes as an animal meat burger, but with much less environmental impact and more healthiness. Is the Future Farm’s plant-based burger a processed or ultra-processed product? First, we need to understand that any foods not taken directly from nature itself and consumed as-is are not natural. They’re considered to be processed because they go through industrialized processes, and this includes Future Farm’s plant-based meat products. Ultra-processed foods, on the other hand, are foods that combine a series of ingredients with added sugar and/or fat. Future Farm products are not considered to be ultra-processed because synthetic or chemical additives are never used in their formulation. All ingredients are from all-natural origins, allowing us to maintain the nutritional baggage of the ingredients. What is the Future Burger made of? Future Farm’s plant-based burger utilizes pea protein, soy protein isolate, chickpea protein isolate, and beets to mimic the color and blood of meat. It’s entirely gluten and GMO-free. Recently introduced, version 2.0 is even more similar to real meat but with reduced sugar, and it’s lower in sodium, fat, and calories.

As a vegetarian I am always looking for new healthy GMO free products to supplement my diet. I used to eat meat and still like the taste.
I was pleasantly surprised at how similar to real meat it was. My kids never even noticed the diifference. My husband enjoyed it but said he could definitely tell it was not “real meat”.
Future Farm is 1000% a winner for me as it is definitely the best “meatless” meat I have found so far.
There was a difference in the texture during preparation and the color was more red than brown as meat would be. Apart from that the mince was really tasty and my family has been asking for more.
The fact that it has a full range of products and is readilly available in store and online without going to a special store is fantastic.
I am not sure if it my imagination but it seemed to cook faster.
I have already stocked my freezer and look forward to more products in the range in the future.
I will definitely buy this again to help reduce our meat intake. 21

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi currently flies to Thessaloniki every Thursday and as of July will fly twice per week on Thursdays and Sundays, while to Athens every Friday and as of June twice per week on Mondays and Fridays. Fares start as low as AED 199*, with tickets on sale on wizzair.com (which also has an Arabic booking website) and the airline’s mobile app.

Athens and Thessaloniki provide incredible historic and cultural experiences and we look forward to enabling people to witness all that Greece has to offer.”
In the past year many of us have sought mental health support or some form of help. Face-to-face consultations however can be prohibitively expensive for some, and others are not comfortable with venturing outside quite yet. CAFU, Dubai Born On Demand Car Services Start-Up Announces New Partnership With RoadSafetyUAE to Launch Year Long Road Safety Campaign With an increase in road traffic accidents during the holy month of Ramadan, CAFU announces a new partnership with RoadSafetyUAE to launch a year-long campaign aimed at making the roads of the UAE safer, saving lives, and reducing injuries caused by accidents. The partnership brings together two champions of the road who are focused on the safety of the community by maintaining safer roads and travelling of the residents and citizens of the UAE. With over 1,400 minor accidents recorded during the first week of Ramadan alone, it is a stark reminder of the need to raise awareness of travelling safely on the country’s road network. With peak accident timings during Ramadan being around the pre-Iftar period of between 2pm to 5pm, as well as the morning rush period of between 8am and 10am, drivers need to take extra care when travelling on the roads. To coincide with this period, the first part of the new campaign, #RoadSafeTogether, will focus on the Ramadan period. CAFU’s focus is to make life better for the community. The 12-month long campaign will see the development of a series of awareness raising initiatives developed through the partnership with the aim to reduce both injuries and fatalities on the road. Deaths on the road are the number two reason for the cause of death in the UAE, second only to cardiovascular disease, and is sadly also the number one cause for death of children below the age of 15, making it a key priority for awareness. Safety is of paramount importance for CAFU across its operations with the company’s commitment demonstrated through the achievement

of ISO 39001, the ‘gold standard’ in global ‘Road Traffic Management System’. The global standard specifies requirements for a road traffic safety management system to enable an organization that interacts with the road traffic system to reduce death and serious injuries related to road traffic crashes which it can influence.
“With more and more cars returning to the roads, we need to be prepared to keep our residents safe on the roads – and that can only happen when the members of our community, from residents through to organizations such as CAFU, helping to bring about that change” added Edelmann.
This CAFU commitment to safety goes beyond just its operations, it goes further to keeping our communities safe whilst on the road.
Over the course of the #RoadSafeTogether campaign, CAFU will be working with RoadSafetyUAE to develop the following initiatives:
Commenting on the new partnership between CAFU and RoadSafetyUAE, Ryan Rogers, Head of Operations at CAFU said, “With our commitment to safety combined with our purpose of making life better for our community, the partnership between CAFU and RoadSafetyUAE is focused around our shared goal for maintaining safety on our roads. Through the power of this partnership, we are coming together to solve the problem of avoidable road traffic accidents, reducing both injuries and deaths in our community. By working together, we are helping to create better driver awareness, more informed around driving safely, and helping to create safer communities.”
•
“A lot of the accidents that take place on the roads, come down to poor and reckless behaviour such as rash driving or not following basic practices like proper mirror checks before changing lanes, or even a simple lack of awareness and action, such as not knowing when and how to check our tires and notice when it needs a change, particularly during the summer months. The good news is that this is preventable with the right action and attitude”, said Thomas Edelmann, Founder and CEO of RoadSafetyUAE.

Ramadan Scents: Why Bakhoor is among the UAE’s Most-Loved Gifts
Greeks and Romans are known to have used bakhoor in religious rituals; it would be transported over thousands of miles up to the Mediterranean before it could be traded in Europe. Bakhoor was also used in vast quantities by the ancient Egyptians. Moreover, it is associated with religious sites; for example, around 60 classic mabkharas are used daily in Saudi Arabia to perfume the Holy Kaaba and its surrounding areas, with the aim of promoting serenity and wellbeing. There are many kinds of bakhoor, with applications depending on the occasion and whether it is for a man or woman. The latter often like to make their own perfumes by mixing various ingredients and drying them in the form of small disc-like tablets: these are called dukhoon. Bakhoor may also be used on clothes, as the scent permeates fabric, too, giving it a pleasant smell. ing traditions during the holy month.
The sighting of the crescent moon marks the beginning of Ramadan, Islam’s holy month, and a time of reflection for Muslims across the world. In the UAE, Ramadan traditions range from family gatherings, to gifting – which embodies the giving spirit of this very special time.
Moreover, the fragrant tradition of burning bakhoor for various occasions became an essential part of Ramadan. As pieces of wood are placed on top of flaming coal, a relaxing, Arabian fragrance fills the air with a warm, rich scent. A beautifully decorated incense burner, with carvings and embellishments, namely the mabkhara, releases smoky hints of nostalgia and tradition.
Whether it is exchanging gifts between family, friends or colleagues, Ramadan gifting represents a token of appreciation, strengthening bonds and bringing people closer together. A tradition which has been passed down through generations in the UAE, gifting perfumes is the most cherished of all.
Inside a mabkhara, the sizzling bakhoor is made of agarwood chips which had been soaked in jasmine or sandalwood for softer and sweeter scents or amber and citrus for crisp, rougher notes. Compressed and shaped before being packaged into flat, square blocks of equal size, the chips are then burned to release plumes of smoke.
Perfumes and fragrances, especially that of bakhoor which is believed to have been used regularly by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions – and in even larger quantities on Fridays – have always held a pride of place among giftThe Source

everything from 5-star hotels to residences. Its history is as rich as its fragrance; used for thousands of years, bakhoor first originated within Arabia’s nomadic Levantine tribes who, upon setting up camp, would burn the chips for fragrance and to repel insects.
Many homes and spaces prefer burning bakhoor over lighting candles or using sprays. Moreover, house guests in a majlis (group gathering) tend to pass it around as a gesture of hospitality. During Ramadan, bakhoor reigns supreme, with many Gulf homes and commercial spaces opting for the mesmerising fragrances of this magical ingredient at the times of iftar, suhoor and beyond. Swiss Arabian, the leading fragrance house in the region, has curated a selection of bakhoors for the holy month. Boasting perfumes and essential oils of the best quality, the range evokes majestic, elegant vibes to suit every need. Some of these fragrances include Dukhoon Al Jazeera, Dukhoon Al Haram, Dukhoon Al Naseem, Oud Muattar Angham and Dukhoon Al Karam. Rescues a Humboldt Penguin
Al Ain Zoo continues its efforts in nurturing one of its most notable penguins. the famous Pingo is a Humboldt penguin which is listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species due to poaching and habitat loss. The story started in 2015, when Al Ain Zoo rescued two Humboldt eggs by putting them in the incubator after the parents rejected them, one of the new hatchlings was rather weak and couldn’t survive, the other fought on and was named Pingo, and in 2017 Ai Ain zoo began its efforts to train him by merging him with other penguins in a separate exhibit. Pingo’s public appearances did not stop there, and in 2019 Al Ain Zoo launched its Feeding the Penguins Experience, where guests can visit Pingo and his penguin friends behind the scenes and to feed them their favorite fish, in addition to that, Pingo was part of the Penguins Parade Experience, whereby guests got to interact closely with these charming animals as they walked about at birds exhibit area. More recently in April 2021, Pingo and his wife Jamila were the center of attention and source of much jubilation at Al Ain Zoo as they celebrated their first born. The new born penguin currently receives the necessary care and nurture to the highest veterinary and nutritional standards to ensure his health. Al Ain Zoo continues to educate the community about these amazing birds, and guests can learn about them through direct stories from their caretakers who would answer all guests’ queries about the Humboldt Penguins, and offer presentation covering all aspects of their life and behaviour, highlighting Al Ain Zoo’s mission in nature conservation and wildlife protection. 35

Abu Dhabi Media to Air Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi’s New Documentary: ‘Our Sea....Our Future’ The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has unveiled its new documentary: “Our Sea … Our Future,” as a part of its ongoing cooperation with Abu Dhabi Media, the UAE’s leading public service broadcaster and media company. The documentary highlights the fisheries sector, which is an integral part of Abu Dhabi’s heritage. The film illuminates the pressure that Abu Dhabi’s fisheries face, and the actions taken by EAD to contain the impacts of overfishing on the marine environment, with the aim of ensuring the recovery and renewal of the Emirate’s fish stocks. The documentary will premiere in Ramadan on Emarat Channel on Saturday May 1st, 2021 at 09:30 p.m., and will be repeated again at 3:30 a.m. It will also be shown again on Wednesday, May 5th, 2021, at 02:30 p.m, and again at 3:30 a.m. The documentary will be broadcast at the same time as the premiere on all accounts of the Abu Dhabi and Emarat Channels social media platforms. The documentary will be also shown on Abu Dhabi Channel on the first day of Eid Al Fitr at 08:30 p.m. after the Oloom Al Dar news bulletin, and it will be repeated at 05:30 p.m. the next day. The documentary, which runs for 35 minutes, was produced by EAD to highlight the roles of some of its employees as they undertake their daily work on shorelines, marine areas, ports, labs and landing sites. It showcases the challenges that employees face while conducting their various tasks and responsibilities. In addition, the documentary features interviews with EAD experts and specialists who emphasize the importance of fishing, the work undertaken by many Emiratis as a main source of income in the pre-oil era. Despite the ubiquitous development in all aspects of life in the UAE, and the wide diversity of income sources, fishing remains one of the main sources of income and a valued traditional craft. The documentary also showcases the perspectives of various fishermen, who are key partners of the agency. Fishermen play a major role in protecting marine life through their ongoing co-operation with EAD’s staff both in the field and at landing sites. Additionally, fisherman contribute to scientific research and traditional knowledge by providing information about the types of fish and endangered species, as well as landing catch data, to name a few. Moreover, fishermen play a vital role in compliance with resolutions and procedures,
which have a significant impact in curbing the impacts of overfishing in the marine environment. His Excellency Mohamed Ahmed Al Bowardi, Vice Chairman of EAD, said: “Abu Dhabi is one of the key stakeholders in fisheries in the UAE, and the improvement of the fish stock and the abundance of demersal species represent very good indicators of the general condition of the country’s territorial waters in the Arabian Gulf.” His Excellency pointed out that natural fisheries in the UAE, like others around the world, are subject to depletion due to several natural and human factors. Studies conducted by the agency show that the fishing sector in Abu Dhabi faced significant pressures, as the overutilization of fisheries and the sharp depletion of the fish stock led to more than 80% decline in the fish stock levels in the country. Moreover, several key commercial species declined to unsustainable levels. He added: “As part of our efforts to protect the fish stocks and encourage sustainable use of fisheries and marine resources, the agency set several controls to manage fisheries in the emirate in a manner that would increase feasibility to utilize and preserve natural resources.” His Excellency asserted. “In this regard, several standards have been implemented to manage fisheries in Abu Dhabi by banning unsustainable fishing methods to protect marine species. It is also to ensure the sustainability of fisheries as part of a comprehensive plan to ensure recovery and sustainability for the next generations and to remain a key pillar of the country’s food security ecosystem. This would also help enhance sustainable development of marine resources and increase fish stocks while improving revenues for fishermen at the same time.” Her Excellency Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Managing Director of EAD, said: “Fisheries are not only a source of revenues or income, as they also have a significant cultural and historical importance. Therefore, Abu Dhabi’s government considers their protection a key priority.” She added: “We cannot underestimate the importance of early response to protect the marine resources for the current and next generations. After fish catch in the UAE were sufficient to meet the population’s needs, we are now depending heavily on importing to bridge the widening gap between supply and demand. Therefore, we took strict actions and controls that would ease the pressure off fisheries in the commercial and recreational sectors.”
She stressed: “Implementing the controls set by Abu Dhabi government to manage fisheries in the emirate requires cooperation by all stakeholders. Efforts to protect and preserve the environment are not only the work of government agencies but the duty of everyone in the country.” Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, said: “This documentary enabled us to highlight some of the main threats facing fisheries in Abu Dhabi, and the internationally-recognized efforts taken by the agency, in cooperation with its partners to manage the fish stocks. Those efforts resulted in creating multiple marine reserves, in addition to deploying a system for licensing commercial and recreational fisheries, and regulating the use of fishing equipment, in addition to imposing a seasonal ban to protect fish during the breeding season. The agency also set a minimum size for fish to be caught for some of the key types and prohibited unsustainable fishing methods.” According to her Excellency, policies, procedures, and administrative controls taken by the agency led to significant improvement in the fish stocks of some of the main commercial species that were depleted. EAD hopes for further improvement as the compliance with current policies and measures continues in a manner that helps achieve the desired outcomes of an environmentally sustained fisheries. She concluded that the agency will continue its efforts in cooperation with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and other strategic partners to fulfil the set objectives and aid in the long-term recovery of the fish stocks, as part of the comprehensive efforts to protect the marine resources in the UAE within the National Framework for Sustainable Fisheries until 2030. Acting General Manager of Abu Dhabi Media Abdul Raheem Al Bateeh Alnuaimi, said: “With its contribution to the community, Abu Dhabi Media is keen to consolidate its leading position through raising the community’s awareness of various topics and initiatives, as well as reaching its target audience through its various media channels. Through airing this documentary, we aim to support environmental and cultural initiatives, highlighting the efforts made by the government to preserve the Abu Dhabi’s environment and biodiversity. ‘Our Sea....Our Future’ documentary highlights the efforts of the Environment Agency and the concerned authorities in addressing the environmental challenges resulting from overfishing.” The feature is the second documentary produced by EAD about marine resources in the UAE. EAD produced “Our Sea .. Our Heritage” in 2019 which highlighted the condition of fisheries in the UAE and the long-term protection and recovery plan for fisheries, which was developed by the agency in cooperation with its strategic partners to replenish the country’s fish stocks. 43

Following continuous efforts under the directives of Hamdan bin Zayed
Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi records a remarkable increase in the Sustainable Fishing Index the ratio of the adult stock size of 28 key species in comparison to the size of their untapped stock, providing a basis for evaluating the conditions of the spawning biomass. The SBR increased from 7.6% in 2018 to 8.1% in 2019 and reached 25.6% in 2020.
Following continued efforts under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in the Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD), the Agency which has been conducting research to assess the state of fish stocks since 2001, recorded a noticeable improvement in the state of fish stocks during 2020 for some of the major commercially fished species in Abu Dhabi waters.
Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, EAD’s Secretary General, said: “Like other countries in the world, fisheries in the UAE are being depleted as a result of a combination of natural and human factors. Pressures, such as the overexploitation of fisheries and the acute depletion of fish species has led to a decline in the stocks of many major commercial species to unsustainable levels, compared to global rates.”
The results revealed a remarkable increase in the Sustainable Exploitation Index (SEI) indicator, which provides a rapid insight into the level of sustainability of fisheries, through the calculation of percentage of volume of landings which came from fish stock assessed as sustainably exploited over the total assessed landings. The indicator increased continuously, raising from 5.7% in 2018 to 29.3% in 2019 and reaching 57.1% in 2020.
H.E. Dr. Al Dhaheri added: “In order to face this challenge, EAD has taken a series of decisive administrative measures and implemented procedures that will reduce the pressure on fisheries in the commercial and recreational sectors. This involves improving fish stocks, rehabilitating fisheries habitats and intensifying efforts to control and reduce this depletion. These measures taken by the agency aim to achieve sustainable fisher-

ies, including restoring balance and sustainability of fish stocks and developing the aquaculture sector.” H.E. Dr. Al Dhaheri indicated that EAD sought the assistance of an expert in the field of fish stock assessment accredited by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the European Union to assess landing data. The results of the evaluation conducted and the data collected by EAD during the last 15 years were consistent with the results of current indicators.
Al-Hashemi added that thanks to the combination of scientific information, continuous monitoring and firm and sound managerial decisions, significant progress has been made in improving the status of fish stocks in Abu Dhabi, with many indicators showing a steady increase in recent years. Moreover, for the Hamour, one of the most important species of the emirate, large specimens were observed throughout the year including the observation of a maximum length of 113 cm, which was the longest since the beginning of the surveys conducted over the past 20 years.
Ahmed Al-Hashemi, EAD’s Acting Executive Director of the Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity Sector, said: “The results of the study of the main species indicate a remarkable improvement in the SBR, which estimates the portion of the fish stocks that is old enough to spawn, thus allowing for the renewal of the stock. In particular, an improvement was observed in the average SBR indicator for some key species, including the Kingfish (Scomberomorus commerson) which registered an increase in the SBR from 17.3% in 2018 to 20.5%, and the Hamour (Epinephelus coioides), for which the SBR increased from 7.1% in 2019 to 15.8% in 2020. In addition, for the Dhil’e (Scomberoides commersonnianus), the SBR increased from 19.4% in 2013 to 36.8% in 2020, for the Jesh Um Al Hala (Carangoides bajad) it increased from 22.6% in 2014, to 32.7% in 2020, and for the Shaari (Lethrinus nebulosus) it increased from 11% in 2018 to 16.6% in 2020.
Al-Hashemi also explained that EAD registered an increase in landings for some species, including the Aifah (Chanos chanos), which increased by more than 200% rising from 25 tons in 2019 to 78 tons in 2020, and Safi Arabi (Siganus canaliculatus), which increased by 32%, rising from 35 tons in 2019 to 46 tons in 2020. It is also interesting to note that large specimens of Hamam (Seriola dumerili) have also been observed, some of them over 100 cm in length, which is considered a rare event according to EAD’s historical data. Furthermore, according to the recent trends in the results gathered and the managerial restrictions in place, in particular the banning of Gargoor and Ghazal nets which target species vulnerable to overexploitation, it is envisioned that fish populations will continue to increase in the future.
