THE EMIRATES LITFEST STUDENT EDITION NOW AVAILABLE TO SCHOOLS Full virtual programme and limited number of live on-site sessions available The Emirates Literature Foundation has unveiled its Education Programme for the upcoming Emirates LitFest Students Edition and opened ticket sales. Building on the success of the virtual programme in 2021, the programme for 2022 will feature a great line up of virtual sessions made available to schools for one month, 10 February – 10 March. There is a nominal fee per school, rather than per student, which makes the virtual programme more accessible to everyone, including those located too far away to make it to the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature in person. The sessions are accessible and captivating for a diverse range of interests and age groups. Designed to be engaging and interactive, students have been asked to submit their questions in advance for authors to answer. Ahlam Bolooki, Festival Director, said: “We are always looking at how we can make our Festival and our Education Programme more inclusive and more accessible. While it was the pandemic that made us pivot to a virtual programme, the feedback we received this year from schools was amazing. By removing the travel time and the need for individual tickets for each student, we have been able to reach an even greater number of students, including those distance learning. We are thrilled with the line-up of authors for this year’s Emirates LitFest Student Edition, and I am confident that they will inspire young people across the country.” Schools can choose between a group of five English sessions, a group of five Arabic sessions, or both languages. During the one-month period, the school can show each session as many times as they want, in different classes, at assemblies, or as a view at home task to be discussed in class. The Source

8

The English language sessions feature authors for all ages, including Polly Dunbar (age 4+), Layne Redman (age 6+), Erin Entrada Kelly (age 9+), Nayanika Mahtani (age 12+), and Carlos Andres Gomez (age 15+). Arabic language sessions feature Julnar Haju (age 4+), Nadia Al Najjar (age 6+), Ali Ashoor (age 9+), Sahar Naja Mahfouz (12+), and Hadil Ghoneim (age 15+). There will also be a small number of Education Programme sessions on site at the Festival in Habtoor City for school trips. Each school will be limited to a maximum of 30 tickets on a first come, first serve basis. The Festival is held 3-13 February 2022 across Hilton Dubai Al Habtoor City, Habtoor Palace Dubai, and V Hotel Dubai. School competitions, including the Emirates NBD Poetry For All, RGS Guildford Dubai Children’s Letter Writing, Chevron Readers’ Cup, and the Story Writing competitions will celebrate the winners at the Festival. Voices of Future Generations will celebrate the launch of the second anthology of winning stories at the Festival with a free-to-attend event Saturday morning, 5 February. The School Librarian of the Year for 2022 will also be crowned at a special awards ceremony. More information about the Emirates Literature Foundation can be found online and yearround news of #EmiratesLitFest on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. The Foundation also has two podcasts; the Best of the Emirates LitFest, and the Boundless Book Club.

pendent on and defined by worldly achievement and success, and so a lot of energy is aimed at maintaining their position and proving that they are worthy of acceptance, appreciation and admiration. Because there is so much pressure to achieve external success, they are less likely to focus on their internal life, which would include self-awareness and a realistic evaluation of one’s talents and abilities. The older they get, the further the less contact they have with their true self, and the less realistic they are about the expectations they set for themselves.

Dealing with Imposter Syndrome Dr Saliha Afridi, Clinical Psychologist and Managing Director of The LightHouse Arabia

The familial context and their perfectionistic tendencies are exacerbated by social comparison which is amplified in today’s world by social media. These individuals will compare themselves along with their very loud and present inner struggles with filtered and curated snapshots of people who appear to ‘have it all together.’ How one can relate to the imposter syndrome?

We all struggle with selfdoubt from time to time, however, there are those who live with a constant fear that their professional success is a house of cards that could come tumbling down at any moment. They believe that their success has just been a series of lucky draws because they are not inherently able or competent, and if and when people find out what they are really capable of, they will be exposed as a fraud. These people struggle with what is known as the imposter syndrome. The term was first used by psychologists Suzanna Imes and Pauline Rose Clance in the 1970s.1 When the concept was introduced, it was originally applied mostly to high-achieving women, but since then research has found that many men struggle with imposter syndrome as well. While imposter syndrome is not a formal mental illness or a diagnosis, people who struggle with this often also struggle with low self-esteem, low self-worth, as well as more serious difficulties such as depression and anxiety. Many believe that it is only those who newly enter the workforce or position that struggle with imposter syndrome, but that is in fact not the case. Imposter syndrome The Source

does not have to do with one inherent ability and is mostly related to how one feels about themselves. The more successful a person is, the more likely they will feel that they are posing or acting in their role. No matter how well they do at work, and how much praise or positive feedback they receive, the idea that they are capable and successful cannot be digested or internalized. What causes imposter syndrome? Individuals who struggle with imposter syndrome can come from households where there was a high value placed on achievement. This could be that the parents expected a lot from their children or the parents themselves were highly successful. Having success as an anchor within a family could result in a person feeling like they don’t measure up to the explicit or implicit standards set for them. The opposite is also true, where some with imposter syndrome come from families that did not have anyone in positions seen as traditionally successful, so who they are and where they come from, feels very different from the role or position they hold today Mainly a result of their family dynamics and societal messages about success and who is capable of it, most individuals with imposter syndrome have very high standards for themselves and anything less than perfect is considered not worthy. They have internalized messages from their upbringing that their self-worth and their self-esteem is de10

While I would love to suggest a 30-day program, unfortunately understanding and healing these parts of you takes a bit lot longer. You have to travel internally to those parts of you that developed in childhood which linked your value and worth with your achievement. On this journey, you will need to confront your fears of being rejected and abandoned and you will need to heal the parts of you that are laden with shame. So where does one start in doing the work and the healing associated with the imposter syndrome? Consider your inner world as consisting of many parts. We all have parts of us that are confident, heroic, and whole while having parts that feel vulnerable, victim-like, and fragmented. All parts exist in all of us, some louder than others. There are times you really feel you are fully in your power, and other times you feel you are struggling to find your footing. So, even if there is a part of you that feels like an imposter, know that it is only a part of you. It is not the totality of who you are. “The wound is where the light enters”—Don’t resist the imposter, welcome it and have a real dialogue with it. You weren’t born like this, you developed this part of you because you felt that your sense of self was determined by your accomplishments. This part of you was developed to protect you and make sure you always put your best foot forward. However, it is no longer serving you. And usually, the parts that help us in one phase of our life can hold us back in 11

another. Once you understand the origins of the imposter and realize that it’s pointing towards the parts of you that are unhealed, you can work on healing them, as well as learning the lessons and thanking this part of you that helped you get this far in life. The more you heal, the less power the imposter has and move more and more into your power. Develop a relationship with the imposter. We might never be able to totally rid of this part, however, we can learn to relate to it and keep it in check. Use the following questions to try to understand where it came from, and how it is telling you about what you need to heal. Ask yourself: • • • • • • •

What am I afraid of really? What is the worst that can happen? What are my gifts and talents? Where in my life do I not feel like an imposter? When you hear the voice telling you that you are an imposter—listen closely, whose voice is it? If your friend or a child came to you with similar concerns, what would you tell them? What would happen if you accepted that you are ‘acting’ a part until you can fully inhabit the part? Imposter syndrome is a part of you that is afraid that the authentic self will be rejected and abandoned.

When someone is struggling with this issue, they have so much of their focus and attention on keeping appearances they forget to check in with themselves about what is their truth. The lens with which they view the world becomes so corrupted that they cannot see their own talents and dismiss their own abilities. And while many of us want to quickly rid of this part of us, we may be missing the point. The imposter, if you relate to it as a part of you that is protective, is here to guide you to your wound that needs healing and eventually it is here to guide you to your truth. The Source

With this in mind, sometimes dieting is just not enough, hence why we nutritionists and doctors in UAE recommend people looking to lose weight use a multilayered approach and seek out the guidance of healthcare professionals. Having said all of this, it is also important to remember that no weight loss program is a magic bullet, this journey is as much mental, as it is health and fitness. And, once you take that first step with the proper support, there is no going back. To help kickstart your health journey, here are my five golden rules that have shown significant success for people wanting to lose weight over the years in my career as a nutritionist.

The truth behind resolutions: Losing weight Cynthia Bou Khalil, Nutritional Consultant, Allurion

As the New Year gets underway, it is time to bring out the age old tradition of making resolutions. According to a recent survey conducted by YouGov; 48% of the people made it their 2021 resolution to lose weight. The same study found that exercising more (59%) and eating healthier (54%) were the other two most popular resolutions. However, the research also shows that the majority of those making resolutions tend to see a loss of motivation by the second month, once busy schedules and old habits begin to creep back in. As a holistic nutritionist working in UAE, I have had the opportunity to work with many men, women, both Arabs and expats and be a part of their journey towards a healthier weight. Whether you are someone who has made a resolution to lose weight or have been at it for years, a crucial aspect to achieving your desired results is having a holistic approach and plan. Everyone needs to focus on total wellness and not just their body image. It has to be an approach that does not use quick-fix methThe Source

ods of shedding extra weight but ensures you stay on track all year round, as opposed to, just the start. Whilst most of us know and understand the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, it is not always easy to implement lasting and valuable changes. Did you know that a huge part of the weight loss journey comes down to portion control? Most of my clients at Allurion are active people who make healthy food choices, however, they are suffering from hunger and need a break from dieting and the feeling associated with never being full. With this said, ultimately, no matter how many diets or HIIT exercises you do, chances are the results will be less than desirable, unless all aspects are being focused on together. I worked with Allurion, and conducted a survey to gauge insights about the approach people have towards weight loss and saw 73% of people in the UAE were not satisfied with the outcome of their previous weight loss solutions. Most had gone through the tried methods of dieting, fitness and taking supplements, but with little to no success. The feeling of hunger and never feeling full are the two states of emotions people struggle with and thus, quit their diet. 12

To be the healthiest version of you, it is imperative to understand where you are and where you want (or sometimes need) to be - Are you looking to shake off just 10kg to 15kg or are you currently teetering on the edge of obesity? The reality is certain situations can carry with them medical risks, so it’s important to identify the current state of your body to properly map out an effective course of action. No weight loss programme will ever be a one-size-fits-all method. You need adequate planning and support, from healthcare professionals, as well as a trusted group to guide you along your weight loss journey. A holistic approach for long-lasting results - Through my years of working as a nutritionist, I have come to find that an effective weight loss programme is one that combines good healthcare and good science. Looking to promote overall well-being throughout the journey would not only lead you to your desired results but would also help you remain motivated to continue working towards and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, even after the heavy lifting is done. Thus, it is important to understand that for goals to be met, you must look to methods that don’t only focus on the physical journey but also your outlook towards health and nutrition as a whole. For me, educating yourself is essential to success. There are no shortcuts- The damage caused to your body by toxic habits developed over the years will not mend themselves overnight and anything that tells you otherwise is just offering you a quick fix to a bigger issue. Quick fix formulas may show you immediate results but are they sustainable? And more importantly, are they healthy? Those who see the best possible results are those who work to realistic timelines and goals for themselves and their bodies and put in the work. Think of this journey as investing your time for a long period to eventually live a happier and healthier life. 13

Professional support - Healthcare professionals play a crucial role in ensuring you take on your journey properly, stay on course and focused throughout. Although I have noticed hesitation to seek out professional help and according to a survey conducted by Allurion in 2018, it was seen that 15% have chosen not to consult a professional, this mostly happens as people often think they can manage the weight themselves. Doctors, nutritionists such myself, and even fitness experts offer advice and methods backed by scientific research and can help guide you unto the right path. For example, after The Allurion Elipse Balloon placement, which is the world’s first and only weight loss device that requires no surgery, endoscopy, or anaesthesia, patients are finally provided with that feeling of fullness. It gives patients the chance to take a break from dieting and the feeling of hunger associated. Furthermore, the Allurion Elipse Program includes professional follow-up over 6-months, along with a connected scale, health tracker watch and app to monitor weight loss. Whatever your mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve - When it comes to fitness, everyone has a different approach to starting their journey. Some start with a crash diet and others with regular exercise. But the key here is commitment. Remember that your habits will either make or break your body so stay determined and remain in control of what you do and consume. As you start or get on with your fitness journey, employing a holistic approach which takes into account all facets of your life is often essential. Solutions curated based on each individual’s needs, supplemented by health and wellness professionals are what get the results that last a lifetime. So kickstart your journey to becoming healthier throughout the year and not just for a month. Remember, this lies with developing good lifestyle habits that will remain with you, whether you choose to lose weight or just maintain your health. The Source

Jebel Hafit Desert Park At the foot of Jebel Hafit mountains in Al Ain, stretching across 9km you will find the Jabel Hafit Desert Park with archaeological remains dating back more than 5,000 years. This UNESCO World Heritage site managed by the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi is open to visitors, daily, between 8 am and 6 pm. If you’re looking for your one-of-a-kind outdoor experience this winter, plan to visit the Jabel Hafit Dessert Park. Here are a few things to know before you go. Jebel Hafit Desert Park is about a 20-minute drive from Al Ain Town Center. At the main gate to the park, you will need to show your AlHosn app and pay a small fee to enter the park (10 Dhs per person 5 Dhs per child under 12). Once you enter the park, you will drive for about 7 minutes on a firm but rocky, unpaved road to reach the main Activity Hub. Once you arrive at the Activity Hub, all visitors are expected to park their vehicles at the car park as private vehicles are not allowed beyond this point. If you have a reservation for camping, there is an exception. At the Activity Hub, you can find guides to assist you with your camping experience and organize various adventure activities for you. Park facilities include restroom facilities located near the Activity Hub and restored ancient tombs. Activities offered through the Activity Hub include mountain biking, buggy tours, guided hiking, and camel riding. While most of the activities are separately priced for adults and children below 12, a 60-minute guided hiking tour generally costs around 55Dhs per person. While at the park, you do have the option of hiking on your own without a guide. The two popular places to visit are the panoramic platform near the Activity Hub, followed by the restored ancient tombs site that is about 15 minutes away from the Activity Hub. Here you can find the 5,000 yearold Jebel Hafit Tombs excavated in 1959 at the request of the late The Source

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founding father of the United Arab Emirates. In addition to these two attractions, there are several other well-marked trails available to explore around the park. As you hike through these paths, you are sure to come across plants native to the UAE and fossilized rocks! Camping at the foot of Jabel Hafit mountain is also a popular option at the Jabel Hafit Desert park. For this, you are required to reserve one of the four camping experiences: public camping grounds, Bedouin-style tents to bubble glamping tents. Finally, before you leave home on this adventure, take a few minutes to call and clarify any questions you may have with the staff at the Activity Hub. Comfortable walking shoes, a sun hat, and plenty of water are a must. Since visitors to the park has no option to purchase food inside the park, a few snacks to go in your rucksack would be great too! This way you can take plenty of time to relax and enjoy discovering the rugged yet beautiful landscape. The UAE Residency Permit System Explained Madhav Dhar, Co-founder and COO, ZāZEN Property Development

The UAE is known for its strict visa policies. Before 2019, the country offered only two types of residency visa options. Based on the investment value, UAE offered a 6-month multiple entry visa and a 2-year residential visa. However, in an effort to further boost its economy and bring in the best and brightest minds, the UAE has revised the terms of its residency program. They are now allowing promising investors and skilled professionals to apply for a 5 or 10-year visa, encouraging them to be part of the next growth phase of the nation and making UAE their primary or secondary residence.

• •

2. Persons with Specialised Talents To apply for the 10-year residency visa under this category, all you need is a valid work contract that clearly states your role. The term “specialised talent” includes the following professions: • Doctors • Researchers • Scientists • Inventors An added benefit of applying under this category is that subject to the level of your accreditation (i.e., any private or public patents under your name, or publications authored by you and your degree in the relevant field) the permit granted can be extended to your spouse and children.

In 2019, 6,800 investors from over 70 countries with investments totaling AED 100 Billion (USD 27 Billion) were given permanent residency in the Emirates. Another interesting fact is that 90% of the UAE’s population, approximately 10 million inhabitants, are foreign nationals. That’s 10 million people who have migrated to the Emirates. These statistics clearly show that the UAE is not only a thriving economy with great potential but is also open to welcoming people; people who are looking to pursue their dreams and enhance their standard of living. If you fall into one of the categories above or want to learn how you can qualify for a UAE residence visa, read on to understand the new rules, eligibility criteria, and the impact of the new residency program in the UAE.

UAE Long-term Visa: Who’s Eligible for the 5-year Residency Visa Permit? 1. Real Estate Investors While most of the 5-year residency program conditions are similar to those of the 10-year general investor program, the minimum value of property investment, in the case of real estate investors, needs to be AED 5M (approximately USD 1.37M). The visas granted under this category are valid for 5 years for primary applicants, their dependents, executive directors, and advisors.

UAE Long-term Visa: Who’s Eligible for the 10-year Residency Visa Permit? Recently, the Ruler of Dubai, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, launched long-term residency programs, namely, a 5-year residency program and a 10-year residency visa program, also known as the Golden Card. As of May 1, 2019, six categories of people qualify for the long-term residency program in the UAE: 1. General Investors As a general investor, you are eligible for the 10-year visa if you: • Have made public investments in Dubai, through deposits or via a company, amounting to AED 10 Million or more (approximately USD 2.74M) and • 60% or more of those investments are in non-real estate assets and • You have 100% ownership of these assets (i.e., they are not under any loan or mortgage) and • You must ensure that the asset/s are not entangled in a dispute of any kind

2. Entrepreneurs If you aspire to set up a business, any business in the UAE, the new residency regulations have made it a lot easier and uncomplicated. A project worth AED 500K or more (approximately USD 137K) and accredited certifications from the government are all you need to apply for a 5-year residency visa under this category. Benefits associated with the residency visa for entrepreneurs: • 5-year visa for not just the primary applicant but also his/her dependents • The 5-year visa can be upgraded to an investors visa (if applicable) • 5-year visa for 3 executive directors in the company 3. Outstanding Students For several years, the UAE has been at the forefront of education. Students from all over the globe migrate to

valid for 10 years. If your primary asset is a business, you can have partnerships in the asset, provided that each partner too has invested AED 10 Million each. If you are striving to set up a team for your business, you can also get a 10-year visa for an executive director and one advisor.

the Emirates to leverage the state-of-the-art education system. Under the new visa residency program, students with a minimum of 95% in secondary school or with a distinction of 3.75 GPA or equivalent, can apply to be long-term residents of the country. 4. Retired Residents The UAE Cabinet approved the long-term residency law for retired residents. According to this law, retired residents over the age of 55 can be issued a 5-year longterm visa. For a retiree to be eligible for this 5-year long-term renewable visa, he/she must fulfill one of the following criteria: • Make an investment of AED 2M in a property in the UAE (approximately USD 548K) or • Have financial savings of AED 1M or more or • Have an active income source of AED 20,000 per month or more (approximately USD 5,480)

In a Nutshell By introducing the Long-term Residency Programs, the UAE has not only taken a huge leap towards greater investment opportunities but also opened doors to people striving to call the Emirates their home. The launch of the citizenship program from the UAE has also led to a series of foreigner-friendly reforms, like legalising cohabitation, allowing alcohol purchase without a license, and permitting 100% foreign business ownership, allowing the Emirates to become a major trading and business hub. If you are an investor, an entrepreneur, a professional, or a retiree, looking to settle down in the UAE – one of the world’s safest places to live in, you should consider a long-term residency investment.

Apart from the 5 and 10-year long term visa programs, the UAE government has also introduced two new visa reforms recently, namely; ● Remote Work Visa This is a one-year visa that allows remote working professionals worldwide to reside in the UAE. So, professionals can stay in the UAE under their own sponsorship and work for companies anywhere in the world. Talk about living your best life!

ZāZEN One offers investors and homebuyers a very promising investment option. With just 86 modern and spacious residential apartments, ZāZEN One brings you the best in Smart Community Living – with a world of possibilities right at your doorstep. Experience their project here and make sure you are investing right.

● Multiple-entry Tourist Visa This is a 5-year visa but unlike the residency program, the visa holder can stay in the country for up to 90 days upon each entry, which can be extended by another 90 days. What’s more is that this visa is open to all nationalities, does not need a guarantor, and the visa holder can enter and exit the Emirates as many times as needed.

What Does it Mean for Investors? The Entire Investment Dynamics is Expected to Shift. As mentioned above, UAE has already raised AED 100 Billion in investment since the introduction of the longterm residency programs. These residency programs are expected to further drive substantial traffic to the Emirates, whether in the form of entrepreneurs, investors, or skilled professionals. More incoming residents leads to an increase in investments which in turn leads to a flourishing UAE economy. Long-term careers, residency, and a perfect retirement

Uber sums up the top 10 list of things most commonly left behind As we venture into 2022 and Mercury prepares to go into Retrogade, Uber looks back at what riders left behind on their trips during 2021, in the fifth annual Lost & Found Index. The annual Uber Lost & Found Index recaps riders’ most common, as well as the most unique forgotten items in Ubers. Not to mention the most forgetful days, dates, and cities. Here’s what we know about the UAE! As expected, phones and cameras are kicking off the list as the most forgotten items in the UAE, closely followed by other usual suspects such as wallets, bags, and keys. New to the list this year however, books have taken over vapes as the eighth most commonly lost item. Good to see that people are occupying their time with better habits! Many riders reach out to Uber about the items they forget and topping the list of unusual forgotten items this year is jewelry, make-up, and watches. Extremely strange for the UAE, there’s an increase in people forgetting their umbrellas in the back of Ubers! ‘Cuz who needs them, right? Someone also left behind a vintage film camera! It seems like riders start to lose focus near the end of the year as December and January were the most forgetful months last year. Riders are also most forgetful between 8 and 9 AM and on Thursdays and Fridays. Wonder why!? Below is Uber’s full 2021 Lost & Found Index, along with easy instructions on how riders can retrieve lost items. 10 most commonly forgotten items in the UAE:

The Ayla Experience

Starting off with their first property - Ayla Civic – in 2011, the strong leadership of Mohamed Soussan has seen the group go from strength to strength. Currently there are 3 properties within the city, with another just opened in neighboring Oman.

Al Ain Hotelier makes the Power 50 list for 8th year in a row Mohamed Soussan – Group General Manager & Co-founder of Ayla Hotels and Resorts once again crowned one of the Top 50 Highly Influential Executives in the Middle East hospitality sector.

Using an evidence based approach the executives crowned as part of the Power 50, made the list on the strength of their achievements over the past 12 months rather than nomination volume.

Last year, Hotelier Middle East adopted a new strategy for its Power Lists. Instead of just focusing on those leaders who head up hotel groups in the region, Hotelier ME shone a light on different roles within the hotel eco-system to highlight the essential work that can often go unheralded. They looked at executive chefs, marketers, and general managers, as well as introducing a 30 Under 30 list for the first time.

Most recently, Mohamed also successfully launched the highly anticipated Ayla Ibri Hotel in Oman. A well known figure in Al Ain and the region, Mohamed is always on hand to represent the group in all domestic as well as international events.

However, to start 2022 with a bang, they reintroduced the original power list, the rebranded Hotelier Middle East Executive Power List. A tribute to the men and women at the very top of their hotel group’s organizational tree working in the MENA region.

“I am honored at once again being awarded this prestigious title. I am proud and humbled to be recognized for my contributions to the success of the Ayla group and the industry as a whole. I couldn’t do the work I do without the unwavering support and inspiring vision of our Group Management and of course my incredible team, that in spite of the recent challenges continue to go the extra mile in all of our properties.”

The list included people who are based in the UAE, don’t report to anyone else in the region, and whose responsibilities lie in the Middle East and North Africa. For the first time the list is presented in A to Z fashion, based on first name and has not been given a ranking as in previous years. The Source

Each property is tailored around the desired guest experience and ranges from the 4-star Ayla Civic to the 5-star Ayla Grand opposite Al Ain Mall. 5 minutes with Philip Tyler, Hospital Director Mediclinic Al Jowarrah Hospital - Al Ain 1. We last spoke just before the pandemic really took hold. How has Covid impacted your business at Mediclinic?

tients could contact doctors through zoom, teams and phonecalls. We set up a pharmacy home delivery service for patients enabling patients to remain at home for much of their healthcare journey. We dedicated ten beds at our Al Ain Hospital for Long Term Care patients that need care adjacent to a hospital setting. We also participated in a Chronic Disease Management programme visiting elderly patients with chronic diseases in their homes. This latter programme energised us to reach out into home care and we have recently acquired Ayadi Home Healthcare enabling us to reach out permanently for patients unable to attend hospitals.

The last eighteen months have been challenging across the world, and challenged Mediclinic. We are fortunate in being part of an international corporation that had the financial resilience to keep paying full salaries, and the supply chain to provide protective equipment. Even so, the challenge for all of my colleagues was immense both in caring for patients in Al Ain and coping with their own families. Many Mediclinic employees took on personal challenges such as ICU nursing and PCR clinics across Al Ain. The guidance of the Department of Health through this time and even now is crucial and the swift implementation of a vaccination plan

4. What would you like the Al Ain community to know about the new facilities? At Mediclinic we look every day at new possibilities. If I had to pick our top five I would say: our Al Jamaal clinic in Al Jowhara hospital providing an elegant boutique experience for our cosmetic, bariatric and lifestyle customers, the extension to our Urgent Care at Al Jowhara hospital with a fast track service for minor ailments, our new 12 bed ICU unit at Al Ain Hospital enabling us to provide world class complex care and our new paediatric clinic led by the widely regarded Dr Abdul Halim, and finally our Bourn Hall IVF services led by Dr Sajida.

2. What are some of the key strategies you used to navigate the last few years and come out stronger than before? Healthcare is almost entirely based on healthy colleagues and so throughout the epidemic we have tried to encourage our teams to stay healthy and make sure we were all quickly vaccinated and looked after ourselves. We also needed the mindset that, having put all the correct protective measures in place, we needed to focus on our patients’ day to day needs. So we ensured that across our network of hospitals and clinics we had the right mix of doctors. We have noticed an increase in dermatology, respiratory medicine, psychiatry and neurological symptoms since covid-19

5. Why is Mediclinic still the number 1 choice when it comes to top-notch care in Al Ain? We strongly believe that covid-19 led us all on a ‘flight to quality’. Across the world we now take a more active interest in our families healthcare and who provides it. We are fortunate to have many of Al Ain’s best physicians supported by skilled nurses and other professionals – but what makes us unique is that we now provide this acorss what we call the continuum of care. From birth to old age Mediclinic is there for the whole of Al Ain

3. What advancements has Mediclinic made during the pandemic? Many organisations were already moving towards digitalisation and bringing services to the customer. In Mediclinic we swiftly implemented a telemedicine service whereby pa-

What is the right age to take your child for an Orthodontic (dental braces) check up? “Oh, somebody told me braces can be started only after the milk teeth fall out and are replaced by permanent teeth, I was not aware that we should have come earlier!!”

Now please don’t get me wrong here, the AAO does not say that at age 7 we have to start treatment for every child, it rather recommends an evaluation by a specialist Orthodontist to check if the child’s jaws and teeth are developing well, to check if the child’s swallowing pattern is right, to check if the child is a mouth breather (which can really create lot of havoc in the developing dentition), to check if the child has a tongue tie, to check if the child has a lower lip trap which can accentuate the malocclusion beyond proportions, etc.

This is the common expression I get from many of my patients over the last 16 years that I have been practicing as a specialist Orthodontist. The American association of Orthodontists (AAO), which is a highly reputed body in the US (of which I am a member) clearly states that your child’s first Orthodontic check up should be at age 7. (Understanding Early Check-Ups | Parents Guide to Orthodontics (aaoinfo.org)).

To give you an analogy, a mason is trying to build a brick wall and he has already sourced his bricks, which contain a mixture of good bricks and bad quality bricks. We all would certainly agree that the overall quality of the wall largely depends on the quality of the in28

dividual bricks. The mason has two choices, option 1 is to remove all the bad bricks before he starts construction of the wall or option 2 is remove the bad bricks after the wall is fully erected and then replace the bad ones with good bricks. How does it sound? Which do you think is a better option? The option 1 of the mason is equivalent to evaluating a child at age 7, if he/she has some deviated development, intervene early to provide a natural environment for the balanced expression of the jaw and teeth development.

It’s very important that the child breathes through his/her nose, while awake and when asleep. The child may choose to breathe through the mouth due to an obstruction in the nasal air passage (which may be transient in case of common cold, or long standing due to various reasons) or it may be habitual. Proper development of the upper jaw in a child largely depends on two factors –

In most cases, the upper jaw of a child reaches adult dimensions around 9-10 yrs and the lower jaw reaches full development around 12-13 yrs. Of course, there are individual variations which can be neglected and let’s focus on the majority here. When a child is brought to me for treatment at age 15/16/17, both his upper and lower jaw development is usually complete, and his permanent teeth are fully erupted into their wrong positions, and I am left with very minimal options to correct. Here, we are allowing the developing malocclusion to express fully and then treating at age 15/16/17 yrs, doesn’t it sound like the option 2 of the mason - erecting the wall and then removing the bad bricks?

Once the upper jaw is well developed, we can expect it to be nice and broad with enough space to accommodate all the teeth. Once the upper jaw is well developed, we can expect the lower jaw also to develop well also, in most of the cases. Once the upper and lower jaws are well developed and they have enough space to accommodate all the teeth, what more does the child need? My goal is to start the work early on in a child’s life to try and create a favorable environment for the full develop of the jaws which will then be able to accommodate all the teeth, leading to an overall facial balance.

• •

Tongue always resting on the palate. Breathing through the nose.

If your child is already in her teens, do not worry, we can still correct her teeth and jaws, its just that the route will be harder. Braces can be started even at the age of 60, provided your gums are healthy.

In the fight between muscle, bone and the teeth, muscle always wins. If we don’t treat muscle abnormalities earlier on, the muscle will continue to influence the position of the child’s teeth and jaws. On the other hand, if we treat the muscle abnormalities earlier on, the child develops a beautiful set of jaws and teeth and a well-balanced profile, there is a good chance he/she will not need fixed braces at all later in life. Even if it’s needed, it would only be a mild correction as most of the work has already been done. This is also one of the main reasons why I can treat most of my cases nowadays, without removing permanent teeth as opposed to the older days, where lot of permanent teeth extraction was needed. I am very glad to deliver such good results to my patients without removing permanent teeth in most of the cases, the latest technology also helps me deliver such results.

I hope to welcome you soon and to give your child the winning smile they all deserve. About Dr Diwakar Dr Diwakar Raju, is a specialist Orthodontist with nearly 20 years experience. THOUGHT SERIES CAN LEADERSHIP BE COACHED? NIRANJAN GIDWANI CONSULTANT DIRECTOR | MEMBER UAE SUPERBRANDS COUNCIL | CHARTER MEMBER – TIE DUBAI

Strangely, very few build a culture that can help create leaders. In fact, many cultures restrict the natural tendency of leadership by being over cautious, regimented and averse to experimentation. They penalize mistakes. They allow unethical behavior. They prevent honest feedback.

Most importantly, a sign of good intellect and learning is the ability to change one’s mind in the face of new facts. This too, as we would realize, is a self-incubated characteristic. The joy of learning something new, correcting a wrong, exceeds the pain of unlearning or sticking to the old.

The words senior-management and leadership are used so interchangeably that the distinction between them is completely lost. While management and managers can ably run the company and deliver on most business metrics, only quality leadership can guide countries, families, enterprises to cope with change and shape the future.

A DESIRE AND ABILITY TO REFLECT Good leaders reflect often. Both on things that seem important to them, as well as on themselves as humans. To the extent that they can be honestly self-critical. Reflection is almost an extension of their quest for knowledge. Having spent almost four decades in the corporate world, and now taking a pause, a well-deserved break for some time, in my quiet moments, I have been thinking - How does one teach someone leadership? This question comes to my mind again and again. We can surely teach people skills, behaviors and processes that would make them better managers to head businesses, from divisions to companies, or even groups of companies. We can talk to people, mentor them about good, ethical existence. But leadership, which more often than not, is mistaken and confused with managerial excellence, is a completely different playing field altogether. Because leadership goes way beyond just the corporate existence. It is visible in every sphere of life. It is a known fact that across the world, huge sums of money are spent by corporates to teach and train leadership. Most of the times, effects on the incumbents going through the learning process are not very long lasting. For a majority of them. Over the decades of my own experience, I came to this self-realization - leadership is mainly self-incubated. It is an inner driven process. The Source

A close look at the lives of leaders across geographies, throws up few characteristics that are common to most, if not all. A VISIBLE DESIRE TO OPERATE WITH A HIGH LEVEL OF ETHICS Good leaders have this inherent desire to operate with a high level of ethics. Yes, it is a known fact that, in today’s world, it is difficult to operate at all times by being a hundred percent ethical. Yet, those with sound leadership qualities continue to remain at the higher end of the ethical band in almost all situations. Through a process which is self-incubated and self-disciplined. History also throws up names of leaders who have been infamously famous, or cruel. They too are remembered, but never for any good legacy they left behind. A DESIRE TO LEARN Good leaders are lifelong learners, and they have an insatiable desire to learn from a multitude of sources. They are voracious readers, and extremely willing to learn from the lives of other leaders. They observe with great inquisitiveness, matters of culture, society and environment, whether their own or that which others exist in. Their hunger for learning is so high that the lines between formal and informal education are often blurred. The two most salient features are their inextinguishable curiosity and humility. Even the most arrogant leaders, when they seek knowledge, are willing, and need to go down to grassroot levels to get it. 30

The journey of leadership self-incubation starts early. The right environment and exposure to different stimuli can help immensely. Interacting with people of different cultures, religion, ethnicity in an inclusive manner gives them invaluable insights. Enabling their curiosity and desire to try out and experience new things enhances their desire to know more.

It takes humility to consider information that contradicts their stated view. Their mark of wisdom is in accepting that they could be wrong, and open to correcting the wrongs. They are aware that they need to spend time with themselves, to help them connect the dots and evolve their own world view of things. Their conviction comes from the strength of this reflection. Seeking feedback is an integral part of this reflection and can be in groups or individual. Coaches and mentors often play an important role in guiding this process.

Here again, one of the best-case studies of building up and creating an incubation process of leadership is UAE and its rulers. For those who have spent decades living in this city, they would be testimony to the fact that Dubai and the UAE actually have become a role model incubator of incubating a new generation of quality leaders and women leaders. The new India is also headed the same way. Look around, and you will realize how many good Indian leaders head global entities these days.

A DESIRE AND ABILITY TO EXPERIMENT Good leaders are willing to experiment without fear of failure. If the experiment succeeds, they scale up. If the experiment fails, they take the learnings and move on. The desire to explore the unknown and the untested is a strong driving force. This is what helps them open up new thoughts, ideas and frontiers.

Leadership is like a seed of a plant. This seed probably lies dormant in most of us. If the elements support it, it can grow into the most wondrous of trees. Yet, only the seed of leadership can grow into a leader. The seed of a cactus, no matter how well it is watered and looked after, can only grow into a cactus. Justifying that a cactus is generating better returns on money investments does not necessarily convert into a good leader.

Managing people and resources, taking ideas through to execution can be taught and learnt. But not leadership. Yes, what is true is that more leaders can be created if we create the right environment to foster the characteristics of learning, reflection, and experimentation. Many organizations spend huge resources on trying to train employees for leadership. 31

CLYMB™ Abu Dhabi shares four common misconceptions about climbing Want to adopt climbing as a new hobby? Worried because of what you may have heard from others? Home to record-breaking experiences, including the region’s tallest climbing wall, CLYMB Abu Dhabi is setting the record straight when it comes to some common climbing misconceptions. This will hopefully encourage you to start your climbing journey, sooner rather than later.

YOU NEED INCREDIBLE UPPER-BODY STRENGTH

Contrary to popular belief, climbing is more focused on using your legs and body position rather than using your arms. Although you will need some upper-body strength, the more you practice climbing, the stronger your arms will become. Relying only on your arms could be dangerous to your tendons and ligaments. Instead, you will need to use your entire body strength while climbing.

CLIMBING IS DANGEROUS

Injuries are not very common with climbing, especially when you have the right gear. Our certified instructors at CLYMB Abu Dhabi will be with you through your entire climbing journey to ensure that you learn how to climb the right way and safely. With the appropriate equipment and the correct technique, climbing will be safe and enjoyable.

CLIMBING IS NOT A SPORT

Climbing is a fantastic cardiovascular and resistance workout – burning anywhere between 500-900 calories per hour. This exercise helps to build endurance, much like long-distance running. Once climbers start aiming for greater heights, their stamina and fortitude are put to the test. Additionally, climbing is officially an Olympic sport! In 2021, the Tokyo Olympic Games included the sport for the first time in a program broken into three disciplines: speed, bouldering and lead.

YOU HAVE TO BE A PROFESSIONAL CLIMBER

Did you know that guests aged 4 and above can try the climbing experience at CLYMB Abu Dhabi? Guests looking for the perfect introduction to climbing can learn and master new climbing techniques, take on challenging new routes and put their skills to the test by manoeuvring across dynamic walls and conquering new heights at CLYMB Abu Dhabi. In addition, CLYMB Abu Dhabi offers a variety of Bouldering, Auto-belaying and Top Roping courses suitable for all – even those without any prior climbing experience. For more information on the courses offered, please visit: www.clymbabudhabi.com Now that these common misconceptions have been debunked, are you ready to start your climbing journey?

Encouraging critical thinking, research, analysis, and exploration, it also introduces ideas, lessons, and experiences that contribute to refining and developing the student’s character by reinforcing positive values.

The book begins by providing relevant content about important World Heritage Sites in the Al Ain region, such as Jebel Hafit, Hili, Bida Bint Saud, the oases and the aflaj. It includes an introduction and a preface, followed by four chapters of classroom lessons, with specific objectives, explanations, questions, and suggested activities for students. These are complemented by interactive tutorials, illustrative photos and videos, relevant internet links, a list of concepts and definitions, and a list of resources and references for both teachers and students.

and the Iron Age, such as the Jebel Hafit tombs, the Hili settlements, the Bida Bint Saud tombs, the falaj irrigation systems, and the historical oases.”

The Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and the Ministry of Education have launched an educational resource entitled Al Ain Cultural Sites Inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List as part of the national educational curriculum. The publication falls within the framework of a new education strategy aimed at students and teachers at public and private schools across the United Arab Emirates.

His Excellency Al Hammadi added: «The content of this book is in line with the Ministry›s vision and philosophy and meets the criteria for subjects like social studies and national education by providing students with new knowledge, experiences, and skills. It also helps in enhancing their national identity and building their Emirati character by studying the past and drawing knowledge and lessons to help them in building the present and the future.”

The Educator Resource is a qualitative addition to the national education and social studies curricula for eleventh grade students that is now being used in all public schools that follow the curriculum of the UAE Ministry of Education. Al Ain Cultural Sites Inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List is published in both Arabic and English and promotes the Cultural Sites of Al Ain, particularly those that have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. It enhances students’ awareness of the importance of the Al Ain sites as part of a common global and human heritage, as well as the role these students, and all members of society, must play in preserving them for the future.

His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, said: “Educating future generations about our country’s rich cultural heritage and historic environment is one of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi’s core mandates and greatest responsibilities. Education is a vital pillar in preserving our history and heritage, inspiring students and embedding the values of good citizenship as they learn about safekeeping our past, which is the true wealth of the nation.”

The Educator Resource was put together by DCT Abu Dhabi under the supervision of leading experts and specialists in the fields of education, culture, and history. DCT Abu Dhabi’s education initiatives are based on an integrative approach with multidisciplinary interactive media and strategies for individual and group learning, to achieve educational goals in cognitive, practical, and behavioural fields related to cultural education.

His Excellency Al Mubarak added: “This resource employs a simplified teaching methodology at the highest standards of global education and development. This publication is another milestone in our significant efforts to integrate cultural heritage into the curriculum of government schools through innovative modern educational tools. A curriculum featuring the Educator Resource will ensure that students are not only aware of the Cultural Sites of Al Ain, but will fully realise their importance to our society and learn how they can play an active role in the safeguarding of these sites for future generations.”

His Excellency Hussain Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Minister of Education, said: “This publication, issued by the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi, constitutes an important educational and historical resource that sheds light on Al Ain Cultural Sites listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, some of which date back thousands of years. “I think the pessimism of the uncertainty that we’ve been facing has to give way to the opportunistic, and optimism of recovery that we’re going to follow, and the good thing is, we never really shut anything down. We put things into hibernation, but we maintained a full state of readiness in order to be able to springboard back into the real world when traffic starts to recover. And we’ve seen that, we’ve seen 40 percent growth over a six-week period just before the Christmas peak… On a point-to-point basis, visitors to Dubai through the airport at 111 percent of what they were pre-COVID.”

In an interview with CNN’s Richard Quest, the Chief Executive of Dubai Airports, Paul Griffiths, discussed the ongoing recovery of the aviation industry and how Dubai Airport is currently experiencing pre-Covid numbers. Speaking on Quest Means Business live from Expo 2020 Dubai, Griffiths also predicted that Covid testing at airports will end in the near future. Key Quotes: On the current testing policies and the failure to have a common policy by regulators:

On whether he expects those numbers to remain:

“I think the thing is, once the testing regime becomes history, which I think it will do shortly, what we believe is going to happen is there will be a very strong recovery. And we need governments to stop interfering with the common-sense health regulations that are now emerging in the wake of the response to the latest strains of the virus.”

“The good thing is you see, having built confidence in Dubai as a destination, the actual multiplier effects of the origin and destination traffic to the economy is hugely valuable, but now what’s happened because of that attractiveness, when the transfer markets come back, we will be in an incredibly strong position to resume our pre-eminence with the sixth freedom as well as this pointto-point market.”

THINGS YOU DID NOT KNOW ABOUT BARBADOS

Barbados aims to be 100% powered by renewable energy by 2030 Barbados has an ambitious plan to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels by 100% and increase its reliance on renewable energy to 100% by 2030. The country is already a leader in this respect in the Caribbean, with a successful solar water heating industry, a recently developed photovoltaic industry, and a growing electric vehicle market. These successes provide a base for future innovations, such as wind power and biofuels. The Barbados National Energy Policy, developed using a collaborative and inclusive effort, established the framework to move the country towards 100% renewable energy generation. Barbadians, as well as residents, are invited to challenge themselves and their current lifestyles to become Energy Champions, and the www.smartenergybarbados.com website offers several suggestions.

There’s more to the island than beaches! Barbados’ Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2011 Known for being one of the Caribbean’s most idyllic islands, there’s much more to Barbados than beautiful beaches, sugar cane-based beverages, turquoise seas, and a certain famous daughter known as Rihanna. With a highly educated and skilled population, advances in digital and information technology, and a regulatory environment that encourages innovation, Barbados is a great place for business and investment, too. Barbados is proud to be exhibiting at Expo 2020 Dubai in the Mobility District, and to introduce to the world – whether investor or visitor – nine things you might not know about the country, and why there’s much more to it than meets the eye.

The world’s first search engine was invented by a Barbadian

Barbados native Alan Emtage created Archie, a pre-Web internet search engine that was able to locate information within FTP archives, and is widely considered to be the world’s first Internet search engine. He paved the way for the many digital and technological advancements that the island has subsequently pioneered.

Barbados is a world leader in Blockchain

With its robust information and communications infrastructure combined with a highly educated and skilled workforce, and a government that supports and encourages innovation, Barbados has become a world leader in blockchain. It’s also home to Bitt, the first blockchain start-up in the Caribbean. And with the strong computer science programmes at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus helping to develop a new generation of savvy innovators, these advances are set to continue into the future.

The Source

A Barbadian company created the world’s first blockchain-based digital currency for a currency union Another Barbados tech innovation, DCash, a form of blockchain-based digital currency for the Eastern Caribbean created to help expedite transactions and serve people without bank accounts, was launched by Bitt earlier this year, in partnership with the Central Bank. Currently being used in Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Lucia, it is tied to the existing Eastern Caribbean Dollar, and is the first blockchain-based currency introduced by any of the world’s currency unions.

Barbados has the 6th fastest fixed broadband in the Americas As per Speedtest’s Global Index in September 2021, Barbados has the sixth fastest fixed broadband in the Americas, yet another reason for the nation to be considered a great place to do business.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison being awarded UNESCO World Heritage status, an outstanding recognition of its historic and cultural significance. The Garrison is also one of eight Cultural Heritage Conservation Areas on the island, with 115 listed buildings – a visit to the Barbados Museum and Historical Society provides an insight into the island’s history and heritage. Bridgetown today is also home to shopping, dining, and great walking where you can soak up its atmosphere and see its many landmarks.

Barbados became a Republic on November 30, 2021 Barbados transitioned to a Republic on November 30, 2021 with Dame Sandra Mason becoming the first Barbadian Head of State. Barbados continues to fly the same flag, celebrate the same Independence Day, use the same currency, and maintain the same name – Barbados – after changing its status. Join the Barbados Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai to learn more about the island. Located in the Mobility District, you’re guaranteed a warm welcome from the team who are excited to connect with visitors from the United Arab Emirates and around the world. With the theme “Innovation and Transformation… From Sugar Cane to Blockchain”, join us to discover who they are, where they came from and where they are going, as well as our innovative heritage, agricultural past, economic growth, and our vision and innovations in sustainable and digital technologies.

Away from the town, you can sail, surf, explore caves and gullies, go on a food safari, discover music, dance and art. For a small island, there’s an extraordinary number of activities to discover, although if you just want to relax on one of the island’s more than 80 white sand beaches, you can be our guest.

Barbados has one of the world’s highest literacy rates and free education up to tertiary level

Barbados was among the first countries in the world to introduce a 12-month Welcome Stamp to digital nomads wanting to work remotely

Barbados has a literacy rate of 99.6% for over 16s, one of the world’s highest rates. Education in Barbados is based on the British model, and 20% of the government’s annual budget is spent on education, with free primary, secondary and undergraduate university education for nationals. The population is also highly computer literate, with a number of tertiary and training institutions providing opportunities for continuous skills development. Additionally, there are a number of government-owned tertiary institutions offering programmes in academic, vocational and technical areas, as well as teacher training.

Barbados offers an exceptionally warm welcome to digital nomads looking to work from paradise with the Welcome Stamp, a special 12-month visa enabling non-nationals to reside in Barbados for a full year as remote workers. One of the first countries in the world to introduce such a programme, the idea was championed by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, Q.C, M.P., in order to offer an opportunity for people to work from one of the world’s most loved vacation destinations and to escape some of the stresses associated with Covid-19.

All of this translates into a workforce that is highly educated, motivated, skilled in key areas such as information technology, and ready to take a leading role to develop future innovations.

Barbados’ Atlantic Standard time zone means that it’s a convenient location for doing business with the Americas and Europe. Remote workers can make use of a wide va-

48

riety of coworking space options, or just live the real digital nomad dream and take your laptop to the beach. Friendly people, efficient business services, reliable high-speed internet, safety and security, and beautiful natural surroundings all combine to make this an ideal choice for those opting to work from home, or work from paradise, as we prefer to think of it.

Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi Translocate New Batch of Scimitar-Horned Oryx and Addax to Chad As part of the world’s largest mammal re-introduction programme, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has just completed a successful mission to translocate 25 Scimitar-horned Oryx (SHO) and 25 Addax to Chad, which will soon be released into the wild as the two species have overlapping home ranges. The Agency is also planning to translocate another 25 SHO to Chad in February 2022. The EAD team also successfully darted 18 wild SHO and fit them with satellite tracking collars enabling close monitoring including survival and reproduction. One herd observed was 87 animals, where over 100 calves will be born in the wild this year. The latest release follows the success of the re-introduction programmes that aims to create a self-sustaining herd of over 500 SHO in the 77,950 km2 Ouadi Rimé-Ouadi Achim Wildlife Reserve, decades after the species was declared ‘extinct in the wild’ by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2000. Launched in 2014, with the first shipment of animals released back into the wild in 2016, the herds have been observed making efficient movements to and from the pre-release pens from far away to assure they are adapting well to their new surroundings. In 2017, a herd of 75 SHOs arrived safely at the Ouadi Rimé-Ouadi Achim Wildlife Reserve in Chad as part of the programme, in collaboration with the Chad Ministry of Environment and Fisheries and the Sahara Conservation Fund (SCF). In 2018, the Sahelian plains of Chad welcomed 40 SHO new calves, increasing the total herd to 180 animals at the time. Currently, there are approximately 400 Scimitar-horned oryx in the wild, thanks to the birth of over 60 new calves so far this year. The second phase of the re-introduction includes the critically endangered Addax and began in 2019 with the translocation of the first pilot group of 15 animals in Nov 2019, followed by the second group of 25 Addax in March 2020, prior to Covid-19 travel restrictions. Currently, there are 65 Addax in the wild with 15 calves born so far this year. HE Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, EAD’s Secretary General, said: “We will always continue the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed who pioneered the SHO re-introduction programme, the first of its kind anywhere in the world. The project will serve as a benchmark for similar initiatives, and we are keen to serve as leaders and guides to other entities in the fields of The Source

captive breeding and conservation. It is saddening to see species becoming extinct and we at EAD will do everything in our capacity to reverse this.” She added: “Next month, we will be releasing both SHOs and Addax in Chad in collaboration with our partners, who are truly invested in ensuring the project’s success, and we are on track to establish a herd of 500 SHO in the wild. Our efforts will continue next year, and we are expecting the birth of more calves, which will help to increase herd sizes and curb the rapid decline of these species.” According to existing data, the last SHO disappeared from Chad in the late 1980s and the species was officially declared globally “Extinct in the Wild” by IUCN in 2000, with the only surviving animals persisting in ex-situ, or in captivity in breeding programmes in zoos and private collections across the world.

without drinking water. As a grazing animal, they derive most of their daily moisture intake from the plants they eat. Perfectly adapted to the hot, arid desert climate, SHO also have a unique circulation system in their skull, which cools the blood by up to -15 degrees celsius (5 degrees Fahrenheit) through capillaries in the nose before it reaches the brain. SHO can sense the slightest variations in air humidity over distances of more than 100 kilometres. This incredible skill for water divination meant that herds were often followed closely by tribes as they sought water.

About the Addax • •

The Addax is an arid-land antelope that is very well adapted to living in the harsh deserts of the Sahara, rarely needing to drink water to survive. Unfortunately, the Addax’s impressive spiraling horns, meat and hide have been attractive to humans and their population has plummeted during the last century due to the prevalence of poaching, which has been exacerbated by ubiquitous four-wheel drive vehicles and pressures from oil extraction activities.

The success of this project is characteristic of the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed who first noticed the rapid decline of SHO numbers in the wild during the 1960s. He immediately ordered the creation of a conservation initiative through a captive breeding programme piloted in the UAE. The animals were housed on Sir Bani Yas Island, where, over the years, their numbers expanded significantly, eventually reaching over 1,000 animals. The Scimitar-horned Oryx and Addax are flourishing in Chad due to the incessant support of several prominent global partners, which have passed on their invaluable proficiency to EAD. These partners include: the Ministry of Environment in the Government of Chad, the Sahara Conservation Fund (SCF), the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI), Marwell Wildlife, Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Institute, Fossil Rim Wildlife Center and the European Union. About Scimitar-Horned Oryx • SHO are named after their impressive bladelike horns, which are long and curved like a traditional Arabian sword. • It is difficult to predict how long the SHO can live in the wild, especially given that their native habitat has changed since the species was declared extinct. However, they typically live up to 20 years in captivity. • SHO can survive for months or even years 51
