UAE plastic ban:

More items to be banned in coming months

It’s time to say goodbye to your plastic straws and cups …

the UAE has rolled out a federal strategy to completely ban single-use materials or plastics over the next three years.

This is as per Ministerial Resolution No. 380 of 2022, which regulates the use of single-use products in the UAE’s markets. According to a report on Tuesday by the Emirates News Agency, WAM, the decision aims to protect the environment from pollution caused by the consumption of such products.

Here are the details of the products that will gradually be banned across the UAE.

From January 1, 2024

The use of single-use shopping bags of any material will be prohibited, including biodegradable plastic bags.

The use of plastic bags, in general, will be limited. The UAE will also regulate the production, distribution, and use of all single-use products at the federal level.

From January 1, 2026

A blanket ban will be imposed on the import, production, and trade of single-use plastic products, including:

1. Plastic cups and covers/lids

2. Plastic cutlery (spoons, forks, knives, and chopsticks)

3. Plastic plates

4. Straws and stirrers

5. Food containers

6. Styrofoam boxes

As per the report by official news agency, WAM, the decision also called on all concerned authorities and consumers to develop and adopt mechanisms and practices to reduce the production and consumption of single-use products, packages and packaging materials made partially

or completely of plastic materials. These include materials used in food packaging, plastic bottles, cotton sticks, crackers, bags, cigarette butts, wet wipes, balloons and balloon sticks.

Which products are exempted?

- Rolls of thin plastic bags

- Bags and products made from recycled materials in the UAE

The items listed above should, however, meet the guidelines issued by the UAE’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) in coordination with the concerned authorities.

Also, products that are intended for export and re-export that are clearly labelled for this purpose are exempt, but they are completely forbidden from being traded in the UAE’s markets.

The RE-NEW Our WORLD Student Water Innovation Challenge

is now open for registration

The 3rd edition of the RE-NEW Our WORLD Student Water Innovation Challenge, the biggest competition in the UAE inviting the youth to solve water related issues, will open registrations on January 12th under the patronage of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure.

It offers primary and secondary students across the country the opportunity to showcase their talent and be at the forefront of water innovation on the international scene. The RE-NEW Our WORLD Challenge is the gateway for students to enter their innovative water projects, have the chance to win the national challenge, and represent the UAE at the international final of the distinguished Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP) held in Sweden.

Organised in partnership by two renowned non-profit environmental organisations, Emirates Environmental Group and Water Alliance Association, the 2023 edition will run from January till June 2023.

The first phase of the challenge includes a series of online talks aimed at inspiring the participating students to use their creativity and problem-solving skills to ideate an innovative solution tackling a local or global water challenge of their choice. After submitting their innovative water solutions, selected finalists will be offered mentoring sessions by professionals from leading organisations in the water industry. Winners will be announced at an Award Ceremony held in Dubai, marking World Environment Day on June the 5th.

His Excellency Eng. Sharif Al-Olama, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure for the Energy and Petroleum Sector, said: “The ‘Renew Our World’ initiative is a challenge that embodies the wise leadership’s directions in empowering youth, especially students of all ages, and supporting their role in society and their contributions to continue the path of development and prosperity.

It also helps empower them and promote a culture of innovation, creativity, and excellence among this ambitious generation, and such qualitative initiatives are capable of creating a generation that is armed with responsibility and ambition.”

Launched by Water Alliance in 2021, the “RE-NEW Our WORLD” Challenge has grown year on year enabling students to explore science and innovation to address global sustainability challenges. The Challenge motivates the next generation of leaders and change makers in the UAE to place the spotlight on water, advance a sustainable mind-set and help ensure water conservation efforts take root locally.

School students can register individually, or as a two-member team, and based on their age; Junior (8-11), Middle (12-14) and Senior (15-18) categories. The Challenge invites Senior category students to submit the result of a school water research project in a field of their

choice: technology, social or applied sciences. The winner(s) will become the UAE finalist(s) at the Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition. The overall international winner receives US$15,000 and a crystal sculpture presented by HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden.

Junior and Middle category participants are invited to ideate and submit an innovative concept that could be a product, an improved process or a service. Concepts should solve a local or global water issue related to water access, water pollution, or water availability. First place winners in the Junior and Middle categories will receive a 3,000 AED cash prize for their school to invest in a water project benefiting the entire community.

The RE-NEW our World Challenge serves as a platform rallying different sectors of society working towards the national Water Security Strategy 2036 and the Global Goals by focusing on water innovation and the youth. The 2023 edition has received the support of corporate partners Xylem and Axis Communications at platinum level, Droople and No More Bottles at silver level and KPS at bronze level.

WHAT IS IT AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

When we are young, we think we are strong and can overcome any challenge with our own effort Then we take a job away from our home, in another country, and after some time away from family and our home culture we wake up one day and realize we are exhausted, physically and even emotionally We think, “ can I do this anymore?” or Do I need to quit my job?” Instead, what if we knew how to take good care of ourselves before we reach this point?

If you have felt this way, before you think your feelings are strange or unusual, realize you are normal At some point in life we all find out that God made our bodies and minds with limits He has no limits, but we do So, what do we do about that?

You may have heard the word “self-care ” What does that mean? As healthcare workers, we are used to taking care of others first but may ignore our own needs

Jesus said, “Love your neighbor as yourself He knows we need to take care of ourselves while we ’ re showing his love to others, because we are weaker than we realize How do we care for ourselves so that we can continue loving others well? Here are some practical suggestions:

GET ENOUGH SLEEP

For many people, getting 8 hours of sleep each night can help. If you have trouble getting enough sleep and are in the habit of looking at your phone in bed at night, instead, turn off your phone screen, turn on some quiet, calming music, and make sure the room is dark Try to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night.

EXERCISE REGULARLY

Why do this when you ’ re already tired? Studies show that regular exercise can actually give you more energy. Start with taking a walk outside each evening with a friend Another excellent option you can do anytime, even in your room is the 7-minute workout. Most of us have an extra 7 minutes in our day! Download the app on your phone and start doing it daily at a time that s convenient for you. No special equipment is needed, and after a few days, you ’ re likely to be surprised at how good you feel!

PRACTICE MINDFULNESS

If you often find yourself having “racing thoughts,” not able to let your mind rest, try the following Set a timer for 5 minutes, and practice looking out a window or focusing on an object nearby, thinking about the object, not all of the stresses in your mind Do this daily and you’ll find it is a good way to let your mind rest It can also help you be more present in the moment to those around you

WHAT IF WE ARE EMOTIONALLY TIRED?

This can be difficult to talk about, because we want to appear strong. We may feel sad, angry, irritable, or hopeless We may try to feel better by avoiding people, eating more sweet foods with sugar, or watching more videos on our phone

We all need some time alone, and sugar and phones aren’t evil, but when used too much, they can make us feel worse If you feel sad, angry, or hopeless often and don’t know how to overcome these feelings, reach out to one of our primary care doctors or chaplains soon, we want to help!

SPIRITUAL NEEDS

Some of us like to talk about this, and some of us avoid it No matter who we are, it’s important for all of us to know how we can know that 1) God is happy to be with us and 2) there are other people who are happy to be with us Without the confidence that God and others are smiling on us, we will struggle through life without the peace and joy that we need If you really want to know God is smiling on you and wants to be near to you, reach out to one of the chaplain staff, they care and are there to help And very important - find a group of people to meet with each week who love you and love God He made us to find joy in Him and in relationship to each other

This is so important, especially when you ’ re away from home and family. Talk to a chaplain if you don’t know where to find a group like this

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST - PRACTICE GRATITUDE

At least once daily, stop and think of 3 things or people you are thankful for, and thank God for them You’ll be amazed at how this changes your attitude over time

If you still feel physically or emotionally tired more than normal after trying these changes above, you may need to talk with one of our primary care doctors to ensure you don’t have a medical issue that needs to be addressed Don’t hesitate to make an appointment, we have several doctors ready to see you!

Self-care is important because God thinks you are valuable, and without his joy, you’ll find it difficult to show his love to others each day. Jesus said, “I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy.”

May God show you today what you need in order to know the joy he wants you to have!

THE IMPORTANCE OF PRESCHOOL FRIENDSHIPS

The Source FAMILY 28

In celebration of February’s International Friendship Month, Hummingbird Early Learning Centre, one of the leading centres for early years education and development in the UAE and accredited by the UK’s Pre-School Learning Alliance, shines a light on the importance of teaching friendship skills to pre-schoolers.

Friendships are one of the earliest and most important skills we learn in nurseries. It gives children valuable contexts in which to learn and practice skills related to social, cognitive, communicative, and emotional development.

At around three to four years old, children begin to gravitate towards each other, looking for play partners and acknowledgement from others their age. However, that doesn’t mean children always know how to be a good friend. That’s where teachers come in.

Below are some tips from Hummingbird on how to encourage friendships in early years:

1. Provide opportunities for children to play with other children

Children need to be able to play with other children to grow up and develop social skills. They need opportunities for free play. Children learn from each other during these interactions, so they must have the opportunity to engage in them often. Group

activities can be a great way for children to have fun together, while also teaching them how to work with others. Some group activities that children can do at school include telling stories, drawing pictures, singing songs, or making crafts.

2. Encourage interaction between adults and children

The importance of encouraging interactions between adults and children is that it helps the child develop social skills. This especially refers to shy children who have trouble making friends with other children their age. It also provides opportunities for the child to learn about new things, such as how they can make friends or how they can interact with other people in their surroundings.

3. Offer activities that allow children to work together in small groups

To make friends, children can participate in informal activities informal such as playing sports and games with others. These activities allow kids to interact with each other on a more personal level.

4. Create a safe environment where children come together and share their feelings

To encourage friendships in these early years, children require a safe space to talk

about their feelings. This is a place where they can feel free to express themselves without fear of being judged or criticised. It is also important that the people in the environment are supportive and understanding of what the child might be feeling.

5. Have an adult-lead conversation about friendship

One way an adult could lead a conversation with children about friendship is by asking them what they think makes someone a good friend, who their best friends are, or how they make new friends. This allow children to think and talk more about what friendship means to them.

Tanja Spasojevic, General Manager Al Tamimi Investments (ATI) Education – Hummingbird and Ora nurseries said: “Friendships contribute significantly to the development of social skills, such as being sensitive to another’s viewpoints, learning the rules of conversation, and age-appropriate behaviour. Seeing these early friendships formed between our youngest classmates first-hand are some of the centre’s most wonderful moments.”

Hummingbird Early Learning Centre opens its newest nursery branch in Dubai Airport Free Zone (DAFZA), on January 23. Catering to the working community in and around DAFZA – one of the quickest developing free zones in the Middle East and home to more than 3,100 companies – Hummingbird’s new branch is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. It offers a home-away-from-home environment whilst implementing a learning through play structure, with a personalised and hands-on approach to childcare, ensuring each child receives the best care and attention, all year round.

KITMEK Launches the World’s First Interactive Digital School at

1 Dollar per Month in MENA

KITMEK is revolutionizing and reinventing the Future of Education by changing the way kids learn on a whole new level at the World’s First Interactive Digital School with AI teachers.

The avatar based school is built on a gaming platform to keep the child engaged and motivated to learn more. With 3 years in the making and affordable at just $1 per month, it provides a World Class Global Curriculum from Kindergarten to Grade 5 along with Extra-Curricular Interactive classes learning Phonics, Life skills, Communication skills and Financial Literacy that help in the holistic mental development of a child.

KITMEK has a Multi-lingual and Multisensory mode of teaching that provides 3D models to enhance a child’s learning experience with over 800+ exams, 18000+ questions, and 144+ unique exams designed in-house by a team of professional teachers and curriculum specialists. KITMEK is available in the MENA region, it’s a click away and can be downloaded from the Android Play Store or Apple Store. It works on a basic smartphone and once downloaded children will not need the internet to play.

KITMEK provides a barrier free self-motivating educational platform that rewards coins to kids while learning and uses them in shopping and entertainment

zones. KITMEK provides a Shopping Mall to customize a child’s Avatar, a Gaming Plaza, Music Concert to enjoy and buy dance moves and a massive Amusement Park for fun rides. There are no ads or any external influence on kids. It’s 100% safe for all age groups.

Anand Kadian, CEO, KITMEK Group said, “AI has become part of our lives as it runs social media. It has a major role in stock markets, energy, aviation, and healthcare that are heavily dependent on it. It is time education adopts it too. Today we realize primary education must be personalized. With the cur-

The Source FAMILY 38

rent global infrastructure, we cannot give personalized focus as human intervention in the process is absolute. This is the reason conventional education has a one fit for all solution or in deprived cases literally no access to education is available to more than 263 million children. KITMEK aims to solve this by making a powerful ecosystem, a safe place where education is gamified and aids a child’s inquisitive mind. With global sponsorship by KITMEK, one can provide world class personalized education at a pocket friendly $1 and even track the child’s performance.”

“KITMEK is a 100% paradigm shift in the field of education. With the rising costs in the education industry, we foresee considerable downloads of KITMEK app from parents in the MENA region waiting to go live.”

In case a child’s parent cannot afford the $1, they can enroll for KITMEK’s free education programme service by getting listed on the website where anyone can sponsor their $1 and give the gift of education. KITMEK will give them a detailed report card of the child to ensure the money is making a difference in the child’s life. This opens immense possibilities where the platform directly connects underprivileged children to a sponsor.

“AI is the solution to teach every child in their own way, pace and at a price unimagined before this. This is a chance for the world to have children grow outside of a rigid system established more than a century ago.

Classrooms across the world look almost the same as they looked a century ago. We envision KITMEK to be that change in education by personalizing it and hope to solve the Global Educational Crisis.” said Anand.

The EdTech and smart classroom market size in the Middle East, Africa, and Europe is expected to grow from $44.623 billion in 2022 to $120.408 billion by 2027.

KITMEK has been tested among a series of children in real world scenarios. The observations turned out extremely positive and engaging especially among kids addicted to excessive screen time, as they benefitted by doing the same screen time but learning at a very advanced pace compared to what would normally happen in a school.

KITMEK is giving back the access of education by avoiding the inefficiencies, distractions or bottlenecks of the system that have plagued children over time. Parents who are stressed, busy, single, or struggling with low performing kids in school will breathe a sigh of relief knowing their children can have a cost-effective world class, personalized learning safely at home. Governments and NGO’s can collaborate to aid children who can’t afford education.

Today, KITMEK brings an opportunity to encourage children to learn better for a brighter tomorrow.

Should Red Meat be a part of our diet?

Silver Fern Farms Brings

Premium Red Meat Good for You and the Environment

Meat is a wonderful source of protein which can provide the human body with many health benefits and advantages. Are you aware of what to look for when it comes to the quality of the meat that is provided by local supermarkets and butcheries? In terms of quality, meat will differ from one country to another and the way the animal has been raised and been taken care of throughout its life.

Introducing Silver Fern Farms, who have become a much loved and respected brand that provides premium red meat across the UAE Silver Fern Farms, founded 1948, is New Zealand’s leading procurer, processor, marketer and exporter of premium quality beef and lamb to over 60 countries. It is a company of proud, passionate farmers and food people, creating goodness from the farms the world needs.

In New Zealand, the climate, clean air, and plentiful pure water fuels yearround growth of lush, green pastures. The animals are raised year-round, like nature intended, with the ability to wander and graze freely.

The animals eat and live as they would naturally which greatly reduces stress, promoting better animal welfare, and ultimately resulting in more tender and better-quality meat to eat. With the animals being fed a diet rich in grass,

rather than grain fed as so many are today, the animals grow strong and healthy.

As a result, the meat that is produced has a consistently delicious, distinctive flavour. The meat is leaner, more finely textured and nutritionally better for the human body. Compared to being grain-fed, grass-fed meat is lower in saturated fat, and higher in vitamins A and E, conjugated linoleic acid and omega-3 fatty acids.

Sustainability is embedded in all Silver Fern Farms do. Their commitment and follow-through are the key to making sure they do the right thing by their customers who increasingly want to know that their red meat is sustainably produced.

The brand has committed to a range of bold initiatives to drive their vision, helping it to become a reality and to position Silver Fern Farms as a leader in sustainable food production. Some examples of their sustainability efforts include radically reducing their water usage per kilo of product produced by 30% since 2016. In 2020, over 100 tonnes of plastic waste were permanently removed from their supply chain and since 2016, there has been an incredible 9.2% reduction in energy use per kilo of product produced.

Some of the benefits of grass-fed animals include:

• Leaner meat

• Lower in total fat, saturated fats and has fewer calories than grainfed meat.

• Higher in antioxidants including vitamin A and E

• Endorsed by Keto, Paleo, and clean eating diets as a more nutrient dense and natural protein source

• Animals are free to roam and graze as they like, all year round, as nature intended

• Farmers optimize livestock to match the natural grass growth curve

Silver Fern Farms meats are currently available at Carrefour, Lulu Hypermarket, Prime Gourmet and La Carne in Abu Dhabi.

912 of the world’s Rarest Manuscripts

on display at the Sharjah Public Library

Ancient manuscripts

and rare books can be an important resource for libraries as they provide valuable insight into the cultural and historical records made by those of the past. They also track the development of replicating knowledge and processes used over the years, becoming a primary source for researchers studying subjects such as literature, history, art, and science.

Sharjah Public Library has been a preferred archive of numerous important historical texts for many years and has dedicated a special section that houses 3102 rare books under 912 titles that are considered the rarest Arabic, English, French, Persian, and German books and manuscripts in the world, covering a broad range of topics such as language, grammar, shrines, medicine, interpretations, astronomy, and many other important subjects.

Uthman’s Copy of the Quran

Among the rarest texts in SPL’s collection are manuscripts referred to as ‘Uthman’s copy of the Quran’, identical to a copy kept in the Topkapı Palace Museum in Turkey. The copy has great significance to Muslims because it was put together, copied and distributed to regions and territories of the Islamic Caliphate State under the directive of the Third Caliph Uthman ibn Affan.

Priceless Content

What makes these works invaluable is not only the date they were published on or their edition but also in their subject matter. A great example of this priceless knowledge is the ‘Antidote’ book by an unknown Arab author. In the book, the author explains how to prepare an antitoxin consisting of plant compounds, which clearly indicates the early Arab contribution to the evolution of modern medicine.

Maqamat

Among the irreplaceable titles in the library is a copy of the famous manuscript known as Maqamat Al Hariri (also known as the ‘’Assemblies of Hariri’’), who’s author died in 1122 AD, and another manuscript titled Sharh Qasedat Ibn Abdoun, by author Abdul Malik bin Abdullah Ibn Bedurun from the sixth century Hijri (era).

Among the rare manuscripts in the field of Fiqh (Muslim jurisprudence) is a manuscript entitled Sharh Al Muntakhab Al Hussami, written by Muhammad bin Muhammad Umar Al Akhsikthi, who died in 1247. For those looking for rare books on grammar, SPL has a manuscript titled Ketab Kashf Al Neqab An Mukhadarat Malahat Al Araab by Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Fakihi, who died in 1565.

Rare Magazines and Periodicals

SPL is also showcasing rare Arabic magazines and periodicals released at the beginning of the last century, such as one published in 1921 by the Arabic Language Academy in Damascus and a copy of the Al Risala magazine published by writer Ahmed Hassan Al Zayyat from 1933, as well as copies of the Al Arabi magazine, which began publishing in 1958 in Kuwait.

Rare Editions

Among the thousands of publications and rare books on display, readers and researchers can access the 1894 print of Aja’eb Al Makhloqat Wa Ghra’eb Al Mawjodat and Al Alaq Al Nafisa, by Ahmed bin Omar Ibn Rustah, printed in 1891, in addition to Tareekh Al Shoara Al Hadrameyeen, by the author Abdullah bin Muhammad Al Saqqaf, printed in 1923, as well as many other rare books.

SPL provides full digital access to its visitors interested in reviewing and searching the invaluable titles found in the rare books section, which gives readers access to thousands of titles, manuscripts, magazines and periodicals that can’t be found anywhere else in the world.
