They say 40 is the new 30! As the years tick by it becomes much easier to invest in such an idea. Speaking from personal experience, I myself am a much fitter, leaner, healthi

Fitness over 40 Is it too late?

FITNESS GURU FRASER McLAUGHLAN WEIGHS IN ON WHY GETTING FIT OVER 40 IS EASIER THAN EVER

er, happier person in my 40s than I was in my 20s and 30s. Why is this? I can sum it up in 1 simple word; behaviour! I simply display better habits now than I did in any previous phase of my life. This is why I am enjoying the most fulfilling spell of my life so far at 43 years old. Over the last few years, I have had the privilege of helping hundreds of people in their 40s,50s and 60s make the same changes

I did. Have a look at the fol lowing simple rules and start changing your habits today!

You want to change your life, start by changing your hab

its!

1. Exercise….

Try and add some form of ex ercise into your daily routine, 5- 6 days per week. Start with something between 2060 minutes per day. Choose something that is enjoyable! Fat loss and cardiovascular health is all about getting your heart beating faster. The method in which you do this is not important right now. NEVER pick something you don’t enjoy. Walking is a fantastic start for beginners.

If I were to give an exception to this rule it would be to

The Source SPORT 10

post-menopausal women. I would strongly advise you in clude resistance/weight train ing into your startup plan if at all possible. There are lots of studies suggesting this kind of addition will improve fat burning capabilities, increase bone health alongside over whelming data suggesting a huge improvement in mental health. Get in that gym ladies! You don’t have to break world records, simply start on the lightest weight and nail the movement.

2. Food….

Try to eat 4-5 times a day. Have a protein source in every meal and try to keep your higher carbohydrate meals closest to your most active part of the day. If you are not exercising in the evening, try to avoid carbohydrates in your final meal. Look at carbohy drates as fuel. If you are not at a part of the day where you are overly active, theoretical ly you don’t really need fuel. Keep this in mind.

3. Treat meal….

If you have been good during the week, have a nice treat meal at the weekend plus a dessert. There is no such thing as bad food if eaten in moder ation. If you eat 27 junk food meals per week plus 1 salad, do you think the salad will have an impact on your body composition over the week?

The same goes the other way around. 1 cheat meal a week will satisfy cravings and have zero impact on fat gain over

the course of the week.

4. Have regular health checkups…

We are very fortunate to live in a time where most health conditions are controllable. These conditions are only controllable if we are aware they exist in the first place. A basic haemoglobin test will flag certain areas we could potentially improve by taking charge of our own nutrition and exercise. Things like HDL LDL, Thyroid, Blood Glucose levels and Blood Pressure can all be controlled without the use of medicine.

5. Weight Training….

As we approach our 40’s we start to lose a little muscle mass. Around 10% per dec ade is the general consensus. This can be addressed and re versed if we take action.

Assuming we consume an adequate amount of protein (around 2g per kg of body weight) we can grow muscle tissue through our 40s, 50s, 60s and even 70s depending on our training history. 45 minutes per day 3-5 days per week is more than enough to get this process started.

As exercises get easier we can add more repetitions or increase the weight or resist ance. As we get stronger our body creates a need for more food so we get to eat more and stay leaner. VERY FEW negatives here! Resistance training carries a plethora of additional benefits. Fat loss, increased bone density, im

proved insulin sensitivity and mental health to name but a few.

I have numerous customers approach me and ask if there is any point trying to start their fitness journey in their 40s or 50s. There is a stigma going around that we turn 40 and everything shuts down and it is impossible to get in shape all of a sudden. I am of the absolute opposite opin ion. I think it is miles easier to get in shape in your 40s than it was in your 20s.

As we get older we get smart er. We get more organized. Most of us are married with families so we have less social commitments. Some of us are lucky enough to have enough disposable income to help pay for higher quality food sources, trainers and coaches. Metabolism and hormones are always on the top of the excuse list for people in their 40s and 50s when it comes to fat loss.

Metabolism is said to reduce 1% a year after you hit 20. If you are eating 2000 calories per day that is 20 calories a day of a disadvantage. Your hormones are not slowing you down, it is your behav iour. Take this on board, start designing your plan and watch your health and fitness sore to levels you never believed pos sible.

“I love making a difference and really touching people’s lives. No matter who it is I meet during my day, I want to leave them feeling better af ter I leave. This is my passion. This is my goal, to spread hap piness and help people real ise their own value no matter what their job or income.”

a very big part of your life and philosophy for living.

“Sport for me is key as a cat alyst for change. As a trans formational coach, I work with people that are stuck in a particular area of their life. I find using sport in these sit uations helps break through that barrier. Of course, I am not suggesting that everyone starts competing at a profes sional level, but it is the phys ical movement that is key in moving forward in your lifeliterally.”

“That is why I started the Ticket to Happiness program, to help people who feel stuck in their life find some direc tion. And then give them a sys tem to move forward. I work with a small group of ladies in a luxury setting here in UAE at one of the coastal hotels. We spend a weekend away doing activities and introspective ex ploration to figure out exactly what the course participants want out of life and how to get it. How to understand them selves, and who they want to be in the world.”

“I have developed a system called PPS - the Personal Posi tioning System. I take partic ipants step by step through a process whereby they under stand who they are and how they interact with the world. This helps them to know why they act the way they do and what they need to change in order to achieve their “ticket to happiness”.

When is the next course?

The next course will be on the 15th October. To know more people can contact me on ins tagram @f.a.alshamsi.

LIFE AS A TEAM

How did you get together as a sporting group?

“We started as cousins and our other friends joined us”

Tell us about your experiences at the Gov Games. What was the highlight?

Gov games were one of our dream challenges. We nev er thought it would happen though as it was only for gov ernment employees. Under the vision of Sheikh Hamdan, there was a community cate gory added that we were eligi ble to compete in.

I can honestly say that we were not ready to compete at that level but we made it through the qualifiers and ended up finishing 14th overall at the actual games so it was an in credible achievement for us. Now that we know what to

The Source SPORT 17

expect we will train hard and we will be ready for next year.

Tell us about your experience at the recent Al Salam 109km Cycle Race through Dubai Desert.

Cycling was a challenge for me because I was new to the sport. To be ready in only a few months for a race that far was really tough. We prepared and trained very hard for it. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done. The wind was so strong in places we could not even see the track there was so much sand but we made it and I finished in the top 20 as an individual and came 4th in the race as a team which was a very proud achievement for all of us.

Do you feel that you are role models for other girls to join sports?

I can say yes we are, as we inspiring many girls to join different kinds of sports. Es pecially when we post our achievements on social me dia. It is a way to make people know more about how you can add sports into your life.

What would you say to people that have never done sports before or don’t feel that they are sporty people and believe they can’t do it?

You are missing out. It may be hard in the beginning, but the effort is worth it. Not having sport in your life means miss ing out on a lot of happiness, a feeling of freedom. Sport be comes a kind of meditation to recharge your energy for the rest of the day.

The support you get from your team, always there for you, shouting, wanting you to be your best. It is a special feeling, a special community. I hope that as many people as possible will join us.

For other Emirati girls that want to start doing more sports - what would be your advice?

Just start and do it - you will love it.

It is a challenge at the begin ning to continue, but you will be proud of yourself in the end. And you will find it is a kind of addiction that you can’t stop do ing it for the rest of your life.

What are the biggest challenges you have faced so far in sports?

Injuries. I injured my leg through over-training and had to stop doing what I loved for 6 months. That was my hardest challenge, to stop doing what I love to do every day.

But it made me seek out other kinds of sports so in hindsight it was a positive thing.

So my suggestion is always to listen to your body and give the

The Source SPORT 18

right rest and recovery. I was crazy to ignore the pain - I thought I would be fine but it only got worse. Love your body as much as you love the sports.

Do you think the Al Ain com munity is ready to have more Emirati women sporting he roes?

Sure we are all from Al Ain so if we can do it then anyone can do it.

What are your biggest achievements so far as an individual?

My 109km cycling at Al Salam champion

And my 21km RAK marathon

Have you always liked sports and been active?

Yes, when I was a kid I loved gymnastics and volleyball.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of sports?

To achieve anything in life you need determination and per severance. It is no different in sport and I have both of those qualities. Once my mind is made up there is nothing I cannot achieve.

What does your daily routine look like?

I get up at 6.00 am and run be tween 5 and 10km before work. Afternoon training is either cy cling or a gym workout. What time is left I devote to family and friends.

INDIVIDUAL QUESTIONS

What made you start out in sport?

I have always been a sporty person but started getting more serious about it through team encouragement.

My speaking career takes up the remainder of my time. In spiring others to achieve their goals.

strengths

Which sport is your favourite to play?

Running, cycling and volleyball will always be high on my list.

I also love cross fit as it has many movements and challenges that never end and does not have a fixed routine.

The benefits of working out with a gym partner

A lot of people talk about fitness journeys as something you take alone. But don’t overlook the sin gle best tool you have for getting healthier: other people. When you hit the gym or chart your fit ness goals, you don’t have to do it alone! In fact, having a workout buddy join you for exercise may end up being the single most im portant factor in your (and their) success.

So, why not combine the two: grab a workout buddy who also wants to have a great time, and sweat together to achieve the desired fit ness goals?

Having a workout buddy means that your training sessions can be more enjoyable, challenging and also consistent. It means hav

ing someone to rely on as well as someone relying on you, to push each other to get the best results possible. Fitness and body transfor mation expert, Yasir Khan, advises that while working out to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle, it is also crucial to do so with the company of a friend, this will help you keep on track with your fitness goals while also pushing you to work harder.

Follow a structure:

Weight training with a partner is ideal. You can alternate your exercises so that your friend completes their set during your rest period and vice versa. This should eliminate any distractions in between sets like scrolling through your phone on social media, something many of us are guilty of!

Regular routine:

It can be incredibly easy to make excuses not to visit the gym. This is especially true if you’re going on your own. You are, however, much more likely to keep going if you’ve got a workout buddy. This is because you may feel guilty about not turning up and letting them down. This could help you keep going with your regular workouts.

Stay motivated:

Sometimes, all we need is a little bit of encouragement to help us push out that last rep, run that bit faster, go the extra mile, or hang in there for another minute, all for the kudos that your workout partner’s “well done”, high-five or pat on the back brings with it. Having a workout partner can help inspire you to keep going and get even better.

Polestar 3 is the SUV for the electric age

• Polestar 3 is the company’s first SUV and its first car planned to be produced on two continents

• Unique design language inspired by Polestar Precept makes production debut

• Fully electric 5-seat SUV produces up to 380 kW and 910 Nm

• Very high level of standard equipment available at launch; priced from EUR 89,900[1]

With tPolestar (Nasdaq: PSNY) officially reveals the Polestar 3 electric performance SUV. Scandinavian minimalism and purity work to gether with the key ingredients of a sport utility vehicle, defining the SUV for the electric age. Polestar 3 makes the SUV not only more relevant and responsible, but also desirable for all the right reasons.

“Polestar 3 is a powerful electric SUV that appeals to the senses

with a distinct, Scandinavian design and excellent driving dy namics,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO. “It takes our man ufacturing footprint to the next level, bringing Polestar produc tion to the United States. We are proud and excited to expand our portfolio as we continue our rapid growth.”

Polestar 3 premieres a new aer odynamic profile where strong focus has been placed on re

taining the hallmarks of an SUV, including a powerful and wide stance. This has been led by sub tle yet effective aerodynamic optimisation – including a front aero wing integrated into the bonnet, an aero wing integrat ed into the rear spoiler, and rear aero blades.

“This car has been designed as a Polestar from the start and fea tures new defining characteris tics for us – like the dual blade

headlights, SmartZone and front aero wing,” continues Thomas In genlath.

Materials used inside Polestar 3 have been selected for their sustainability credentials, while raising premium aesthetics and luxury tactility. These include bio-attributed MicroTech, animal welfare-certified leather and ful ly traceable wool upholsteries. In line with Polestar’s commit ment to transparency, a complete life-cycle assessment (LCA) will be completed on Polestar 3 when production begins. Subsequent assessments will follow through its life cycle and work will continue to constantly find ways of reduc ing its carbon footprint.

Polestar 3 is the first car from Pole star to feature centralised com puting with the NVIDIA DRIVE core computer, running software from Volvo Cars. Serving as the AI brain, NVIDIA’s high-performance auto motive platform processes data from the car’s multiple sensors and cameras to enable advanced driver-assistance safety features and driver monitoring.

The infotainment system is pow ered by a next-generation Snap dragon Cockpit Platform from Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. As a central component of the Snap dragon Digital Chassis – a compre hensive set of open and scalable cloud-connected automotive plat forms – the Snapdragon Cockpit Platform will be utilised to provide immersive in-vehicle experiences with its high-performance capabil ities to deliver high-definition dis plays, premium quality surround sound and seamless connectivity throughout the vehicle.

With Volvo Cars embarking on a new era of safety, Polestar 3 car ries next-generation advanced ac tive and passive safety technology from Volvo Cars as part of its DNA. This includes the latest innovation – interior radar sensors that can detect sub-millimetre movements in the interior of the car, to help

protect against accidentally leaving children or pets inside. The system is also linked to the climate control system to avoid heat stroke or hypothermia.

Further collaborations with in dustry-leading safety technol ogy partners like Zenseact, Lu minar and Smart Eye, provide Polestar 3 with cutting-edge ADAS (Advanced Driver Assis tance System) technology that integrates seamlessly thanks to the centralised computing pow er.

As standard, Polestar 3 features a total of five radar modules, five external cameras and twelve ex ternal ultrasonic sensors to sup port numerous advanced safety features. The SmartZone below the front aero wing collects several of the forward-facing sensors, a heated radar module and camera, and now becomes a signature of Polestar design. Inside, two closed-loop driv er monitoring cameras bring leading eye tracking technology from Smart Eye to a Polestar for the first time, geared towards safer driving. The cameras monitor the driver’s eyes and can trigger warning messages, sounds and even an emergency stop function when detecting a distracted, drowsy or discon nected driver.

Android Automotive OS is the in-car operating system, co-de veloped with Google and front ed by a 14.5-inch centre display. It is an evolution of the technol ogy first launched in Polestar 2 – the first car in the world with Google built-in – and a revo lution of functionality and de sign for the large SUV segment. Over-the-air (OTA) updates are included to allow for continuous software improvement and the introduction of new features without the need to visit a ser vice point.

Polestar 3 launches with a du al-motor configuration and a

power bias towards the rear. The standard car produces a total of 360 kW and 840 Nm of torque. With the optional Performance Pack, total output is 380 kW and 910 Nm. Adjustable one-pedal drive is included, as well as an electric Torque Vectoring Dual Clutch function on the rear axle –an evolution of what was first de veloped for Polestar 1. A decou pling function is also available for the rear electric motor, allowing the car to run only on the front electric motor to save energy un der certain circumstances.

Advanced chassis control is pro vided by dual-chamber air sus pension as standard, allowing Polestar 3 to adapt between comfort and dynamic suspension characteristics, and the car can adjust its active damper veloci ty electronically once every two milliseconds (500 Hz).

“Our goal was to offer the perfor mance and precision that define all Polestar cars, without com promising the comfort of the dai ly drive,” says Joakim Rydholm, Polestar’s chief chassis engineer. “To do this, we used new com ponents like the adaptive air sus pension to engineer the ‘Polestar feeling’ for this type of car.”

A 111 kWh battery pack provides Polestar 3 with generous driving range of up to 610 km WLTP[2] (preliminary) . The lithium-ion battery features a prismatic cell design housed in a protective al uminium case with boron steel reinforcement and liquid cooling. A heat pump is included as stand ard, helping Polestar 3 utilise am bient heat for climate- and bat tery preconditioning. Polestar 3 is also equipped for bidirectional charging, enabling future poten tial for vehicle-to-grid and plugand-charge capabilities.

As with Polestar 2, the list of standard equipment in Polestar 3 is extensive, with few options for easy configuration and sim plified production logistics. All

versions include air suspension, a full-length panoramic glass roof, all-LED lighting inside and out, re tractable door handles with prox imity sensing, and 21-inch alloy wheels. The Plus Pack and Pilot Pack are fitted as standard for the first model year and include a raft of premium, luxury and conveni ence features like a 25-speaker au dio system from Bowers & Wilkins with 3D surround sound and Dol by Atmos capability, soft-closing doors, a head-up display and Pilot Assist.

Available to order from the second quarter of 2023, the optional Pi lot Pack with LiDAR from Luminar will add an additional control unit from NVIDIA, three cameras, four ultrasonic sensors and cleaning for the front- and rear-view cameras, providing accurate real-time data about the car’s surroundings es

pecially in the long-range field. This enables enhanced 3D scan ning of the car’s surroundings in greater detail and helps prepare the car for autonomous driving.

The optional Performance Pack sharpens driving dynamics even further and includes the maxi mum power and torque output (380 kW and 910 Nm), along with performance optimisation for the air suspension, unique 22-inch forged alloy wheels and additional signature ‘Swedish gold’ details.

Polestar 3 is the first car out on a new all-electric technology base developed by and shared with Volvo Cars. Production for initial launch markets[3] is planned to begin in Volvo Cars’ facility in Chengdu, China, in an incremental ramp-up phase[3]

from mid-2023, with first deliver ies expected in the fourth quar ter of 2023.

Additional manufacturing at Vol vo Cars’ Ridgeville, South Caro lina facility in the United States, is expected to follow towards the middle of 2024 – from which point supply to North American and other markets is planned to switch from China to the US. In itial deliveries from this factory are expected around the middle of 2024.

The Story of Obesity is Complex

The worrying unknowns of obesity

Obesity knows no bor ders” were the words ut tered by Dr. Hans Kluge, the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Eu rope. Although referring to the rate of obesity that’s reaching ep idemic proportions in the Europe an region, no sentiment rings tru er than this, especially with the UAE ranking among the top 40 countries in the world for a high prevalence of obesity.

Obesity and the relationship be tween having a healthy weight and the body’s proper function ality have long been studied by scholars, scientists, and health care practitioners all over the world. It’s no secret that this chronic condition affects the quality and quantity of a person’s life, impacting everything from respiratory and reproductive function to brain activities such as memory and mood. Most in terestingly, the complexity of the disease means that the causal factors cannot simply be limited to an unhealthy diet and physical inactivity.

I explain to my patients that obe sity is a chronic relapsing complex with multi-factorial intricacies. The disease of obesity arises as a result of an interaction between a genetic and epigenetic back ground with a person’s environ ment, stressors, and sociocultural

factors resulting in behavior of inadequate dietary intake leading to elevated weight. This has been widely documented. But often missed, and not considered, are metabolic health and hormonal influences. When it comes to weight management or weight loss, I have since discovered that success does not boil down to a lack of willpower, but instead, is a metabolic issue which requires a holistic approach. Metabolic health involves not only the food we eat but also our energy and stress levels, emotional health and sleeping patterns. All these aspects play an important role and need to be taken care of when a person is living with obesity and is looking to regain health.

Furthermore, fat tissue is not an inert depot. Its presence is impor tant as it supplies the body with energy, aids nutrient absorption, immune response, maintenance of body temperature and regu lating insulin sensitivity. However, its dysfunction, at any level, may have negative metabolic and car diovascular consequences such as decreased insulin sensitivity, hypertension, etc. Thus it is im portant to focus on maintaining healthy adipose tissue and aim at overall health improvement.

With all this in mind, and the cur rent approximate 35% obesity rate in the UAE, it’s time to look

into the holistic medical solutions that are needed to combat this epidemic effectively and for the long term. The crux of the issue is that obesity can affect multi ple parts of a person’s body and health. To combat such a complex disease, multidimensional solu tions such as the WEMA Health program, which I helped co-de velop with some of the top med ical experts in Europe, must be used in order to change people’s lives and their health. At the core of WEMA Health is a virtual-first, medicated, end-to-end obesity program that helps members lose up to 20% of their body weight, connecting them with endocrine specialists through its innovative, state-of-the-art app, with a focus on diet, exercise and psycho-so cial support.

With metabolic health playing a vital role in a person’s weight loss success, the program also makes available to users the modern and clinically documented weight loss medicine, GLP-1, which is pre scribed in tandem with profes sional and personalized cognitive behavioral coaching, empowering members to make lasting lifestyle changes.

ABU DHABI CRICKET & SPORTS HUB’S TOLERANCE OVAL

Awarded Day/Night ICC Accreditation

Abu Dhabi Cricket & Sports Hub’s (ADCSH) magnificent Tolerance Oval has been granted full International Cricket Council (ICC) accreditation as a day/ night venue, meaning the ven ue can host official T20 and One Day International cricket matches just two years after its opening.

The Tolerance Oval becomes the fourth of its kind in the country to gain this level of ICC accreditation, alongside Dubai International Stadium, Sharjah Cricket Stadium and its elder sibling Zayed Cricket Stadium.

As a result, ADCSH not only makes history as the first crick eting destination in the world to house two such day/night, fully ICC accredited ovals on the same facility, but the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) increases its group of facilities capable of hosting even more cricket of the highest level.

Abu Dhabi Cricket & Sports

Hub CEO, Matt Boucher said: “Our vision for Abu Dhabi Cricket & Sports Hub is two-pronged; we want our incredible venue to host the highest calibre of international events while simultaneously catering for the 760,000 community sport ath letes that use our facility annu ally.

The Tolerance Oval is a prime example of this vision, having already hosted the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup warm-up match es, teams from the 2021 Indian Premier League, 2021 Pakistan Super League, 2021 Abu Dhabi T10, as well as the inaugural T20 Abu Dhabi Community Cup final in the last 12 months.

We also wanted the Emirates Cricket Board to have a fourth international ground at their disposal to make Abu Dhabi even more capable of hosting major, multi-venue global com petitions and tournaments. By gaining ICC accreditation in such a short period of time, we have successfully managed to do just that, and we look forward to

more world-class cricket coming to the country, and Abu Dhabi, as a result.”

Emirates Cricket Board Gener al Secretary, Mubashir Usmani, added: “We applaud Abu Dhabi Cricket in adding yet another ICC accredited stadium to their ven ue and to the UAE’s world-class cricket offerings. It immediately bolsters the country’s cricketing product and further establishes the UAE as one of the best sporting destinations in the world, while increasing Emirates Cricket’s abili ty to host and deliver multi-venue ICC tournaments and the world’s best franchise competitions.”

The Tolerance Oval has a total of nine turf pitches and five broad cast-rigged grass wickets, with full LED floodlights and an array of training facilities that include 20 natural grass wickets in the near by international nets area.

The Source SPORT 42
ADCSH BECOMES THE FIRST AND ONLY VENUE IN THE WORLD TO HAVE TWO SUCH OVALS AT THE SAME FACILITY

These facilities were highly commended by the ECB’s inspectors, with the Tolerance Oval given the highest rating in 17 out of the 29 categories under the examination which was then ratified by the ICC. It ranked, among others, as very good for its pitch, outfield, practice areas, changing facilities, artificial lighting, and Anti-Cor ruption Unit requirements.

The England Men’s Test side will be one of the first major interna tional teams to utilise the facility after its accreditation. They arrive at Abu Dhabi Cricket & Sports Hub on Friday 18 November for a training-camp prior to this winter’s tour of Pakistan and will face their Lions counterparts in a three-day warm-up match at the Tol erance Oval from Wednesday 23 November 2022.
