A

few days ago marked the 19th day of Ramadan and the 11th anniversary of the passing of Sheikh Zayed, the founding father of this great nation. He was undeniably one of the most influential rulers of all time and unfortunately, I arrived in the UAE after his passing and was unable to ever experience firsthand the aura of this great man.

Sheikh Zayed represented generosity and instilled the love of giving in the hearts of his people and his legacy and spirit lives on. He truly loved this country and loved its citizens as only a father could, but his love of humanity had much broader boundaries than the mere borders of his nation. We can all learn a great deal from Sheikh Zayed’s profound and deep respect for humanity, regardless of race or religion. Our planet has indeed become a very small and fragile abode as we race into the future and we must all accept the importance of recognizing the earth’s citizens as a family connected by necessity more than ever before. Sheikh Zayed was the first to help any and everyone that required assistance, both physically and spiritually, and truly comprehended the wisdom of collective positive human potential. This world is a place of infinite beauty and yet riddled with potentially apocalyptic chaos and most of us bury our heads in the sand helplessly maintaining that the solutions to the problems are too big to handle – not so! The answer lies in the simplicity and abundance of familial love. Collectively, the human race can achieve all things if only every one of us would pledge a little. I have done a little by offering space in this magazine in hopes of creating the necessary awareness to start making that collective difference, and will continue to do so in our future issues. Please read our cover story and act today by coming to the aid of your brothers and sisters; after all; “what if this were your family.”

The Titan Arum was planted at Paignton Zoo Environmental Park in Devon in 2003 and has been cared for by gardeners ever since.

Giles Palmer, curator of plants and gardens at Paignton Zoo, said: “Imagine you have the smell of rotting meat in a tin can and you open that can on the hottest, most humid day of the year.

news Sudanese youth spend Ramadan giving back

Nicolai Schleifer

is Danat Al Ain Resort’s new Executive Chef

In keeping with Ramadan tradition, Sudan is seeing vibrant, innovative efforts to give back. Khartoum, Sudan - Only 15 minutes left before Iftar, the time to break the day's fast, and already Khartoum's quick-moving traffic is thinning. As the sun drops below the horizon, groups of energetic youth take their posts at major intersections, bus stations and hospitals, equipped with food baskets and water bottles. Preparing themselves for the call to Maghreb prayer, which during Ramadan marks the time to eat after a day of fasting, the highly organised youth form smaller groups to hand out their provisions to passersby. "This is not new. Maybe the form of conducting it is, but the concept is as old as Sudanese society itself," said Mohammed Akood, a member of Wosool, a youth organisation for charity and education. "Giving is cleansing for one's soul. Besides, even if it's just a handful of dates or a bottle of water, it still counts," he explained. "The joy we see in people's faces is enough." OCEAN CLEAN-UP

I

In 2016, "the longest floating structure in world history" will be placed in the ocean. Don't worry - it's not another super yacht or party barge or some other contraption that will further pollute the ocean. It's called The Ocean Cleanup, and it's a 1.2-mile-long system designed to collect and remove plastic from the ocean. For two years, it will hang out in the ocean, hopefully to begin undoing what we've done for decades: polluted the heck out of the water with plastic trash.

t's basically a stationary array of barriers that uses the ocean's natural currents to collect the plastic at a central location. When I first wrote about The Ocean Cleanup a year ago, I thought it was something that moved through the ocean, collecting trash as it went. But that's not how it works at all. Why move through the oceans, if the oceans can move through you? Instead of going after the plastic using boats and nets, The Ocean Cleanup will use long floating barriers, using the natural movement of the ocean currents to passively concentrate the plastic itself. Virtually all of the current flows underneath these booms, taking away all neutrally buoyant sea life and preventing by-catch, while the lighter-than-water plastic collects in front of the floating barrier. The scalable array of floating barriers, attached to the seabed, is designed for large-magnitude deployment, covering millions of square kilometers without moving a centimeter.

The plan is to deploy The Ocean Cleanup near Tsushima, an island between Japan and South Korea, and let it do its thing for two years. Then the next step is to use all the plastic junk it collects as an alternate energy source. Talk about killing two birds with one stone! A lot of that pollution is plastic trash - 8 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every single year. Right now, about 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic are floating around the ocean. And pollution, as we know, causes many environmental, economic, and health problems. For example, plastic kills over 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals every year. (That's awful.) The animals it doesn't kill are often left deformed. Plastic pollution is expensive! Plastic in the oceans costs companies across the world over $13 billion a year and the U.S. government hundreds of millions in coastal cleanup efforts. Wouldn't it be great if we could spend that $13 billion elsewhere?

So far, attempts to clear plastic waste from the ocean have involved ships and nets and just haven't worked. According to The Ocean Cleanup, solutions that move through the ocean to remove trash tend to be ineffective and also cause more damage: Using vessels and nets to collect the plastic from one garbage patch would take about 79,000 years and tens of billions of dollars. Besides, such an operation would cause significant harm to sea life and generate huge amounts of CO2 and other emissions. They are estimating that The Ocean Cleanup could remove half the plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in just 10 years, costing 33 times less money and happening 7,900 times faster than the old vessel and net method. This first deployment near Tsushima will give them an opportunity to test out exactly how much trash can be removed, and how quickly, in reality. Oh, and the guy who created this? He was a teenager when he got started on

environment it. Boyan Slat is the genius behind The Ocean Cleanup. He's 20 now, so he's getting pretttty old. (Next time someone complains about "kids these days," share this story with them.) He was on a diving trip in Greece in 2011 - you know, when he was around 16 - and was astounded by the amount of plastic he came across, wondering why nobody had cleaned it up. Instead of waiting for someone to fix it, Slat came up with an idea himself, which he presented in 2012. In 2013, he began leading an international team of 100 engineers and scientists, and in 2014, they raised $2.2 million in crowdfunding. And here we are today! During the second quarter of 2016 - less than one year away - we're going to learn exactly how quickly our oceans can be cleaned up. A year ago, it was still in development. In less than a year, it will be happening. Imagine if it all goes according to plan! We could have cleaner oceans, healthier wildlife, and save money!

Pre-Holiday Home To-Do List It’s holiday season again! Time to escape the heat to a breezy tropical island somewhere or stroll the cities of Europe for culture and fashion. The bags are packed with all holiday essentials from the tanning lotion to the evening attires. There is that one task that needs to be taken care of before the switch off begins, and that is preparing your house for the holiday. Since the home is more often than not a woman’s castle – who is he kidding anyway – it is our job to keep our men in line with the tasks at hand before we can resign ourselves to a worry-free vacation.

T

raveling means that a house will be deserted for a while. This usually entails a pre-holiday cleanup and prep. But there is more to a cleanup than just taking out the trash and doing the dishes. Helpling.ae, the global platform for booking cleaning services takes a look at the essential pre-holiday to-dos that may not cross your mind when preparing to leave: Unplug Electronics Televisions, laptops, microwaves and all other electronics should be unplugged before traveling. Electronics draw power even when not in use. And for safety reasons, pull the plugs in case a power surge happens while you are away. Keep the AC on but on a moderate temperature Living in hot countries means that AC is a necessity. Although you will be away, the house still needs to remain cool to avoid turning to an

14

The Source

oven. If heat builds up, it can affect all wooden furniture, cabinets and floorings. Excessive heat could cause wood to expand and doors to not close properly. Keep rooms at 25 - 26 degrees celsius to save energy yet keep the air flowing. Plug all the drains Summertime is also a time for creepy crawlers to come out of their hiding spots to avoid the heat in the ground. An empty house is a perfect time for pests to come out and play without anyone to squash them. Avoid pests coming out from the drains by plugging all the drains in sinks, showers and bathtubs. Water your plants If you do not have an in-ground sprinkler system (or a friendly neighbour) to help you water your plants, then consider using a soaker hose with a timer to keep your plants watered and healthy. For indoor plants, place the plants on wet towels and leave them in the bathtub or fill a tray with water and place the plant on the tray. Overall clean up The most obvious prep for the holidays is to cleanup your home properly before leaving. This includes cleaning out the trash from all the rooms in the house, washing all dishes, laundry and putting away everything. Nothing feels better than coming back to a clean and tidy home after a long holiday. Delegate to a convenient online platform for cleaning services such as www.helpling.ae so you can focus on the other to-dos in preparation for your holiday.

stuff for men

SUMMER FASHION

H

FAUX PAS LIST FOR MEN

ow can summer, the season with the least amount of clothing, leave the most room for fashion mistakes? Perhaps there’s something about the heat that makes us shamelessly abandon any sensibility we would normally exercise during the rest of the year - the notion of men's summer fashion becomes a foreign concept to many of us who are, frankly, to hot and tired to care. Maybe we feel like the slowness of the season gives us permission to take a vacation from discriminating taste. Either way, big, baggy board shorts and wraparound sunglasses make one thing clear: Summer has a set of style no-no’s all its own. These are five style sins of men’s summer fashion, and lucky for you, their seasonal solutions. Socks and Shoes Any other time of year, we seek to keep our feet bundled up in warm socks: argyle ones for work, a low-cut athletic pair for the gym and, on occasion, the heavy-duty wool variety in the cold months. But summer calls for no socks at all, especially with the footwear of the season — namely, men's sandals, drivers and boat shoes. Suffocating your feet in any of these with a bright white pair of socks should also require a camera bag and return ticket to Bratislava. Still insisting on coverage of some sort? Invest in knot socks, the no-show alternative to the tourist-favored tube. Cargo Shorts You remember cargo shorts - the circa '97 type that you could use to store everything from lunch leftovers to a small child. Yeah, well, those are so two decades ago, and this brings us to the next men’s summer outfit mistake. The huge pockets bow out at the sides and force the shorts to sag. It’s time to try a silhouette from this century. Cuts are slimmer (like your favorite pair of jeans), and patterns range from bold plaids to seersucker; even everyday khaki is a fine choice. The secret to a great pair of men's shorts is finding ones that don’t stray away from a straight line running from hip to hem. And speaking of hems, yours should always end an inch or two above the knee. Strong Fragrances Summer may be hot and heavy, but that heavy cologne from last winter is just too much musk for summer’s sweat-inducing temps. The combination of a weighty, woodsy scent and your natural eau can be nauseating this time of year. Summer is the signal to switch to something light and lean. Anything with citrus notes or hints of grass like vetiver is exactly what you want in a summer cologne when the sun kick-starts the water works. Flip-Flops Summer’s official footwear is undoubtedly the betweenthe-toe flip-flop, which leads us into our next men’s summer fashion mistake: It’s the barely there cover for your feet ideal for a backyard barbecue or a beachside jaunt. And that’s about as far as a flip-flop should go. Any other outing should get the sandal treatment - not the Kumbayah kind with fabric straps à la Teva or a thin-strapped European mandal. We’re talking about a simple leather criss-cross that hugs the foot while still allowing it to breathe. As the saying goes, X marks the spot. Tank Tops

16

The Source

The tank top is meant to be worn as an undershirt. And unless you’re a bronzed weightlifter or sick spousal-abuser of this shirt’s nickname, the tank top is one garment that should be left under wraps, or better yet, quarantined on the Jersey Shore. So, what’s a guy to do in the harsh heat of summer? Try a light-colored V-neck T-shirt or polo shirt instead. Both of those should provide at least some of the breeze you’re looking for without having to spend a lifetime at the gym.

WISHING ALAIN

O

Ramadan Kareem

nce again, Ramadan has embraced the good people of Al Ain, and along with the spiritual and physical cleansing has come a time of camaraderie, an embracing of existing family and friends, and the fostering of new relationships. As is the case every year, we at The Source have been blessed with the generosity and hospitality of so many of our dear supporters and friends and the photo collage we have compiled on these pages is our way of show casing the occasion’s joy as expressed on the faces of so many of our Garden City’s finest! As the Iftars throughout Al Ain come to a close, we begin preparations for a well deserved Eid. It is our hope that the sacrifices and charities extended throughout the year generate good health, happiness and prosperity to all in Al Ain and, indeed, beyond. city review

HILTON KAREEM It was the phone call that I had been dreading. “You’re up and out!” barked the landlord and, a full six days before we were contracted for the new villa, it was time to explain to She Who Must Be Obeyed that we were, to all extents and purposes, homeless. Except that’s not quite how I phrased it to Mrs. N.

“Honey, the time has come in our short lives to turn our backs on the 9-to-5!” I proclaimed. “Why simply exist like the morose masses, when we can live like Howard Hughes, experiencing the wonders of high-class hotel living!” Her response was brilliant, but brutal. “Only if you take me some place that I have never been before!” she demanded. “And the Iftars better be delicious or else it’ll be you on the skewer!” Having laid down the gauntlet, it slowly dawned of Her Indoors that she had unintentionally limited her options. For over the last four glorious years at the helm of The Source, I have treated my good lady wife to a veritable smorgasbord of 5* service in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and beyond. Where else was there? Suddenly, the penny dropped. Family 20

The Source

Nouisser had never, in spite of our best intentions, sampled the delights of the Hilton Hotel in Al Ain. It was like an unkempt and cruelly ignored jewel in the Arabian Desert. And it was time to claim it. And what a place! She Who Must Be Obeyed, the kids and I set foot in this unchartered territory, we were quickly redirected away from the two standard rooms that we had booked to a sumptuous chalet, replete with spacious surroundings, a sound system and a wonderful outside space for the kids to explore and, in the case of the parents, ignore. We had arrived right in the middle of Ramadan, which was observed respectfully but also meant acres of unpopulated space, both on the wonderful pool slide and around the gorgeous terrace, as we tucked into the most exquisite Iftar delights that one could wish for, all courtesy of Flavours

restaurant. And lest we forget the magic of the Makani Ramadan tent, hubbling and bubbling satiny clouds of shisha smoke to the enchanting melodies of Laih Haddad and his oud. The exciting daily raffle draws, courtesy of Eastern Motors, added to the exhausting list of reasons to quickly forget that I was supposed to be a destitute, guilt-ridden father of two who had earned his wife’s ire for a poorlytimed villa exchange. As Yours Truly pens these words, he overlooks a golden Arabian sun and a mercifully relaxed and regenerated wife, while the two children slide in delight down the snake-like shape of the Hilton pool waterslide.

Homeless?! Where did it all go so right?

AMILY VACATION F

PACKING LIGHT FOR A by Faith Janes

It is a personal goal of mine to pack as little as possible when we go on family vacations. I used to pride myself on taking anything and everything we could possibly need for a trip. But now I get excited with how small our bags are and how easily our luggage fits into the van or taxi when we leave.

I

n the past we’ve carried so much stuff with us, that everyone was cramped and loading the car took forever. This time, the van was so empty on the ride to the airport that the kids could actually lay the seats all the way down to go to sleep!

So what made the difference? I decided to handle all the packing myself. As a mom, the bulk of the packing typically falls on me anyway. It only takes one trip devoid of one kid's underwear to realize how important it is to personally scrutinize the clothes packing process.

22

The Source

Instead of looking at packing for the family as a chore, I now see it as a big advantage. Maybe doing all the packing seems a little control freakish, but here are some of the reasons why I enjoy it: Advantages to Packing for the Entire Family Vacation: 1. I pack fewer clothes. This year we are gone for a nine day trip but I only packed three outfits for everyone. As the minimalist of the family, I’m bound to pack the lightest for all of us. 2. I make sure all outfits are mix and match. I don’t like to do a lot of laundry on vacation but I’d rather do laundry than over pack. Making sure every shirt goes with every pair of shorts I pack for the kids, there is sure to be something clean they can wear on any given day. 3. I pack fun and educational activities. In the past, we’ve traveled

with video game systems and all kinds of toys to keep the kids busy. This year my husband and I decided to skip the games, but I made sure to bring some fun things along like books, movies, and card games that didn’t take up too much room. 4. If I don’t pack it, they’re less likely to miss it. When I used to turn my kids loose with the directive of “Go pack your bag for our trip,” the sheer volume of what they wanted to bring was overwhelming. Despite me gently trying to explain that six stuffed animals was a tad too much for one week long trip I was inevitably met with a sad face and an argument. By avoiding the situation of having to put back things the kids want to pack, I can skip the arguments altogether. Once you’ve been on vacation with just a handful of necessities, it really shows you how little you need to be quite comfortable on a daily basis. This little realization always helps to revive my minimalist mojo and gets me in the mood to think of new trips to plan.

MUST-HAVES WHEN

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN

O

Travel season is here again! To commensurate the season we are heading out this week to visit family in America.

ur suitcases are out but, naturally, nothing has been packed yet. This does not bother me in the least. Even if I pack the night before, I am quite confident knowing that we will have everything we need. I suppose that I am also relying on the fact that I can always purchase whatever I forget once we reach our destination. So again, it isn’t the packing for the trip that stresses me; packing for the plane though, yikes!

I made a list a few weeks ago detailing all I would need for the plane ride because, unlike once we land, if I forget something we are destined to do without that particular commodity for 14 hours plus. In the past, I over packed for the plane. I had a baby bag, my husband a book bag, and my two oldest children carried a book bag as well. Keep in mind that we are walking through the airport with two toddlers in a double stroller and a baby in a carrier. Trust me; it’s too much! So, I have narrowed down my list quite nicely for this trip. I believe that my list can be used for air and car travel alike and I hope it makes your traveling with children easier. Must-haves for Traveling with Children

1. Snacks: While airlines do provide food, I find that my children are always hungry between the scheduled meal times. I will be carrying whole-wheat crackers, frozen grapes (they stay colder longer), and mini oatmeal muffins. This way I know that I have healthy, semi-hearty, low-sodium snacks for the long haul. 2. Change of clothing: This is for children and parents alike. I pack a change of clothes for each of my children and at least a fresh shirt for my husband and me. Sitting somewhere for hours inevitably equates to spills and messes for whatever reason. For our winter holiday I didn’t take a change of clothes for myself and ended up smelling like spoiled milk for 9 hours. Learn from my mistakes! 3. Extra diapers, wipes, and underwear: Now, while I never end up using all of the diapers and wipes that I pack, I do find comfort in knowing that if something happens and we are delayed longer than scheduled, I have enough disposables to last us for an extra day. Extra underwear is just in case my potty-trained toddler has an accident - better safe than sorry. 4. Fever/daily medications: None of my children have ever been sick while traveling, but I always like to be prepared just in case. 5. Minimal entertainment pieces: I’m taking 2 books and a leap pad to entertain my children should they become bored with movies. Additional Tip Use take and toss cups if you are trying to save space. Just pre-mark them if your child only needs a certain amount of water/milk. Bon Voyage and have the best summer ever!

Help Provide a Lifeline for Jordan’s most vulnerable Syrian families

T

We are witnessing the worst humanitarian crisis of our era. About half of all Syrians are now uprooted, including 3.8 million refugees in neighbouring states. The Syrian conflict and its impact on the surrounding region has resulted in the largest displacement crisis of our time – what UNHCR’s High Commissioner, António Guterres, has called a mega-crisis. he impact on surrounding countries has been dramatic, overwhelming their capacity to absorb refugees without more international help. Overall needs remain enormous. Host Government services and local communal services are under strain due to the increased demand, impacting service quality for both refugees and nationals. While the response from both traditional and nontraditional donors has been extraordinary, the scale and protracted nature of the crisis is challenging the ability of the international community to meet the continuing need for essential life-saving humanitarian aid.

Jordan, which is now home to over 600,000 Syrian refugees, has the second highest refugee per capita rate in the world. 84% of Syrian refugees in Jordan live in noncamp accommodation, urban areas. An alarming two out of three Syrian non-camp refugee households in Jordan are below the absolute poverty line, and one out of six households are living under the abject poverty line. This means that they have less than the absolute minimum required resources available for survival. After 4 long years of self-funding, their resources are long depleted and Syrians are now struggling to pay for their basic needs. Families’ lifesavings are simply gone and many are resorting to alarming and exploitative measures to simply survive; including working illegally, child labour, forced marriage and begging for money. The situation is particularly worrying for the most vulnerable populations, such as women or single headed households and older refugees who are living alone. Over one-third (34.6%) of urban households in Jordan are headed by females. Almost one third of families with school-aged children reported withdrawing children from school in order to support the family. In general, living conditions for almost half of all refugees were assessed as being bad or uninhabitable. A quarter of households report having unreliable electricity supplies, 46% have no heating and 20% have no working toilet.

It is now, more than ever, imperative that humanitarian efforts are coupled with a flexible solution-driven approach to build the resilience of individuals, households, communities and institutions in affected countries. The difficulty in providing and delivering support for individuals dispersed across multiple cities exacerbates UNHCR’s ability to provide the quality of services it would like. This is why the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) launched the Lifeline Appeal - to provide urgent life-saving cash assistance to the most vulnerable Syrian families living in Jordan’s urban areas. The program identifies and protects the most vulnerable Syrian refugees living in Jordan, and provides them with a dignified means of support. There are currently 12,000 families on UNHCR’s cash assistance waiting list, a number that is hoped will reach zero before the end of 2015. The cash assistance program gives refugees dignity and the capacity to make choices to determine how to best fulfil their family’s needs. Refugees withdraw cash from ATMs using biometric iris scan technology, rather than stand in queues for distribution of aid, empowering them as members of society. The direct cash assistance provided through donations to the Lifeline Appeal enables refugees to make decisions for themselves and their families on their most urgent expenses. A humble donation of US$1500 covers the needs of a Syrian family for a whole year. Candidates go through a comprehensive

social & community forum eligibility and reassessment function that ensures that those refugees selected to receive cash assistance are indeed the neediest. Moreover, families’ situations are regularly reassessed to determine eligibility. So far, the generosity of individual donors has supported over 1600 families, who will receive cash assistance to cover their basic needs for a year. However, almost 10,400 families patiently await life-saving cash assistance to secure their most basic needs. You can make a difference in a refugee family’s life. The importance of individual contributions to salvage the lives of people experiencing unimaginable hardships, having endured the hellish experience of being forced to flee from their homes and separated from their loved ones cannot go unnoticed. The Lifeline Appeal’s website also provides options for smaller donations so that everyone can assist, no matter what their capacity.

Report claims Intel will delay 10nm Cannonlake CPUs, substitute new 14nm products

A new report is claiming that Intel will delay its 10nm Cannonlake introduction and substitute in new chips derived from Skylake instead. This new family, dubbed Kaby Lake, would essentially be refresh of Skylake. Details are scarce in the single-

page document but historical trends would suggest a handful of modest clock bumps and improved TDPs. There’s also mention of a new H-processor with up to 256MB of cache onboard, and more desktop chips with 64MB of L4 cache and a Skylake-derived GPU.

LICHTENSTEIN A land that time and the E.U. forgot…

With summer upon us and the mass vacation exodus looming, the most annoying things about being a tourist, are having to share our destinations of choice with throngs of other sightseers and not being able to navigate to all points of interest due to time constraints. Well this is certainly never going to be an issue for anyone wishing to venture to one of Europe’s most obscure and miniscule places.

I

t’s official: Europe’s least visited country is unloved little Liechtenstein. Last year, a mere 60,000 tourists travelled to this absurd Alpine principality. For discerning readers, this is great news. Liechtenstein is charming, its absurdities are enchanting, and it boasts one of the most stylish (and least crowded) modern art museums in Europe. Nothing spoils a sightseeing trip so much as lots of other sightseers. Spend a weekend in Liechtenstein – only two hours by train from Zurich – and you and your significant other should have the entire country (virtually) to yourselves. Liechtenstein is utterly ridiculous, but that’s a big part of its appeal. One of the smallest countries in Europe, it’s only 24km from end to end and barely 12km across. Squeezed into half a valley, between Austria and

34

my world Switzerland, its monarchy is Austrian and its currency is Swiss. It only granted women the vote in 1984, the last European country to do so. Its national football stadium, the Rheinpark Stadion, holds just 6,127 spectators – less than Torquay United. Its national anthem shares the same tune as ‘God Save The Queen’. A tax haven with more registered companies than people, its entire population is about the same as Milton Keynes. A railway runs through it, but it has no train station. It’s the world’s biggest manufacturer of false teeth. Its capital, Vaduz, has a mere 5000 inhabitants. Yet this sleepy town is home to Liechtenstein’s splendid Kunstmuseum, a striking avant-garde building with a superb

array of contemporary art. The permanent collection includes the Andre Thomkins Estate and a wealth of work by postwar American artists such as Richard Serra and Donald Judd. The current exhibition, Between Sex and Geometry, is the first major retrospective of the work of US postminimalist Gary Kuehn. The chic café doubles as a first-class sushi bar. If you fancy some fresh air, you can catch a bus up to Malbun, Liechtenstein’s unassuming ski-resort. It’s a cheerful, unpretentious place, with wonderful views over the mountains, into Austria. Liechtenstein has no army, but when Hitler marched into Austria, Liechtenstein’s Prince Franz Joseph II went to see the fuhrer in Berlin and somehow secured his country’s neutrality. At the end of the Second World War, when 500 White Russians sought sanctuary here, he heroically refused to hand them over to Stalin. The last time Liechtenstein saw military action was in 1866, during the Austro-Prussian War, when they sent 80 troops to guard the Tyrolean border. They returned home with 81 men, having suffered no casualties and gained a new recruit en route. Franz Joseph’s son, His Serene Highness Prince Hans Adam II, is Liechtenstein’s current ruler. He’s Europe’s richest monarch, worth about $5 billion. He has one of the world’s finest art collections, with the largest private haul of Rubens, and the only Leonardo da Vinci in private hands. Some of this priceless booty is now on public show, but you won’t find any of it here in Liechtenstein. Absurdly – and therefore fittingly – you’ll have to travel to Vienna to see it. Maybe when his amazing artworks return to Liechtenstein, this quiet backwater will attract a few more visitors. Until then, enjoy the elbow room. Truly, this is the land that time (and the EU) forgot.
