I
can laugh about the absurdities surrounding Donald Trump and his campaign for the presidency of the United States of America. I get a chuckle browsing facebook posts from the many friends who all claim to have busy lives but somehow seem to find plenty of time to help make our days that much more interesting. I grow just a little bit more spiritually and emotionally every time my children kiss me hello or good-bye while whispering the 3 most magical words in any vocabulary – I love you. But I cannot laugh, nor can I grow when confronted with the horrors being inflicted upon the many brothers and sisters we have around the globe, whose only crime leading up to unspeakable punishment was being born in the wrong place, at the wrong time and into the wrong families. Imagine, for one moment, how hopeless life must become to instigate climbing aboard a rickety unseaworthy craft with your children and taking your chances on the high seas with one thousand other souls – 500 of which are exceeding the boats capacity – in hopes of finding a better life. And chances have it that you may never arrive alive at that said destination. Watching or reading the news is undeniably a most disturbing practice these days and there are those who will tell you that to avoid the pain, they simply refrain from ever doing so. The only problem with this approach is that in reality, ignorance is not bliss, rather an inanimate state perpetuating the crime of complacency! We can make a difference and begin the global healing process but not if we continue to wait for the other person to lead the way! The solution and recipe calls for a pinch of every able bodied man, woman and child moving in the righteous direction of change. I still believe and look forward to a refreshed awakening in humanity's recovery room...

Wacky World Like Owner, Like Dog: I Capture Dog Owners Mimicking Their Best Friends My name is Ines Opifanti and I am a photographer from Hamburg, Germany. For this series, I photographed dog owners who mimic their dogs’ facial expressions. Almost 3 years ago I adopted a puppy out of the blue and quickly noticed her amazing ability to pull off almost humanlike facial expressions. But, what about the other way round? How easily can humans “read” our dogs’ facial expressions? I was very curious, so I posted a request for volunteers in a local, dog-centered Facebook group. I made appointments with over 30 mostly
total strangers and their dogs. I photographed the dogs first, letting them sit on a small podium. Owners had to interact with them, telling them phrases they know the dogs will react to. Of course they got lots and lots of praise and treats so they quickly stopped caring about the lights or the camera. It’s important that dogs are calm and relaxed, so they can show their natural behavior and are not frightened. After the dogs were photographed, the owners have to interpret and mimic. I noticed that dog people get really good at interpreting their own dogs. It’s really a fascinating thing because we’re two completely different species after all.

Al Ain's Ryan Babel 'sorry' for sexist tweets Former Liverpool striker says he just doesn’t like talking about football with women
Lightning kills camel herder in Al Ain Six camels he was herding also died in the unusual accident Abu Dhabi: A camel herder died after he was struck by lightning in Al Ain while talking on the phone, Abu Dhabi police reported late on Friday. The six camels accompanying the caretaker also died after they were also hit by the powerful lightning bolt, the police said. Colonel Mohammed Ibrahim Al Ameri, Director of Emergency and Public Safety Department at Abu Dhabi Police, said they received a call about an person hit by lighning during a thunderstorm. An ambulance was immediately dispatched to the location in Qashaba in Al Ain. Initial examination by paramedics revealed the victim, an Asian man, died immediately as a result of the lightning strike. Six camels he was accompanying were also killed. Al Ameri advised people to take the utmost precaution from lightning, and urged them to monitor weather reports in order to learn about any forthcoming storms.
Dubai: Al Ain striker Ryan Babel has apologised for sexist comments aimed at a female follower on social networking site Twitter. On Saturday the Dutch 28-year-old former Ajax and Liverpool forward posted a link to a story about his former Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez being accused of playing defensive tactics with his current club Real Madrid. The post was a attached to a status update which simply said "Hmm". @Shannxo said: “@Ryanbabel why you hate him so much, he’s manager of Real Madrid while you beg your Twitter followers to add you on Whatsapp.” To which Babel replied: “@Shannxo I think u should concentrate on growing some [expletives] instead of speaking about football… Ur a girl… Stay in ur lane [sic]. “At least let your brother or your boyfriend make the comment then we can argue… Not gonna argue with a lil girl, with all respect… C’mon now,” he added... Dubai Cares highlights the need for education in emergencies on World Humanitarian Day
A
On the occasion of World Humanitarian Day, Dubai Cares stressed the importance of education in emergencies as tens of millions of children are currently affected in conflict areas around the world. As of this year, 30 million children are now forcibly displaced from their homes – the largest number since the height of the Second World War. Over 37 million children and adolescents have been forced out of school by conflict and emergency and attacks on education have dramatically risen to levels higher than any point in the past 40 years.
ddressing the great need for education in emergencies, Tariq Al Gurg, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Cares said: “Depriving children of their right to education not only affects their future prospects, but also leads to a lost generation and deteriorating communities. Moreover, education in emergencies is key to the long term success and sustainability of other forms of interventions as it is an essential tool to build and maintain economic prosperity and stability.”

The Source
According to a recent report discussed at the Oslo Summit on Education for Development 2015, education in emergencies is often identified as a high priority by affected communities themselves. The transformative power of this long-term intervention is unparalleled. As we look towards the United Nations General Assembly Week in September 2015, Dubai Cares will continue to support efforts like the development of the new humanitarian fund for education in emergencies so that this power is amplified.
ABOUT DUBAI CARES: Dubai Cares, a global philanthropic organization launched in September 2007 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, aims to provide children in developing countries with access to quality primary education through the design and funding of integrated programs that are impactful, sustainable and scalable. 7 Habits That Keep You STRONG (Even When Things Go Wrong)
I
“I’m stronger because of the hard times, wiser because of my mistakes, and happier because I have known sadness.” ~Unknown
t’s happened to most of us. Despite our best intentions, something goes dreadfully wrong. You suffer a heartbreaking loss, make a terrible mistake, or get blindsided by an injury. In disbelief your mind cries, “Wait. What?” And then, “No, no, no, this can’t be happening.” After the initial shock, when the surge of stress hormones has subsided, you realize that yes, this is happening.
can still want to change things, but you have a calmer attitude, and any action you take to improve your situation is more effective.
And you can’t help thinking: “But how could this happen? It’s not fair. I can’t bear it. Why me? Why now? How will I ever get through this?”
4. Neutralize the negative.
1. Use your power of choice. No matter what your circumstances, you have the power to choose your direction and how to use your energy. You can choose to use your energy in positive, productive ways or in negative, destructive ways. Either way, the choices you make now determine your future. 2. Accept what is, no matter what. Practice not mentally labeling what happens as good or bad; just let it be. Accepting what is, instead of judging it, puts you in a state of inner non-resistance. You

3. Be grateful. Besides enhancing your everyday life, finding things to be grateful for can help you cope during hard times by giving you a wider perspective that helps you feel less overwhelmed by difficult circumstances. Sometimes our thinking is directed by our inner critic, who can say some harsh things. But when you pay attention, you can recognize unhealthy thoughts and change them to more positive statements. 5. Return to the present moment. As human beings, one of our favorite mental activities is to get lost in thinking about the past or the future. Remembering to bring your attention back to “now” sweeps the debris from your mind and returns you to a state of simplicity. 6. Trust yourself. It’s better to trust in your own feelings and intuition-even if you make mistakes along the way-than to look outside yourself for guidance.
7. Forgive. True forgiveness means that you accept the reality of what happened without an emotional charge. You recognize the healing and growth you have achieved from working through the upsetting experience, and you wish healing and growth for the other person. Life’s hard when things go wrong. Feeling shocked, anxious, and dejected is no fun. But practicing these habits when times are fairly good will enhance your life and help you stay strong during the hard times. Imagine being in the middle of a disappointment or a crisis and being able to move swiftly through the shock and stress rather than getting stuck there. Imagine feeling calm, clear, and confident during difficult circumstances instead of confused and overwhelmed. Imagine even reaching a state of inner peace as you take action to make things right again. Some of these concepts are easier to turn into habits than others, and they all take time to master. But if you pick even one and start practicing, you will become stronger, wiser, and more resilient no matter what life throws at you.

SUPER CARS?

stuff for men
When it comes to filling up with Blue or Green, I find a wealth of misconceptions regarding the differences between Super and Special fuel, and often the only deciding factor is the cost. ut in order to understand why you should be using one over the other, one must understand exactly what the difference is between the two.
I’ve often heard people saying that Super is cleaner than Special, that Super gives more power, etc. Whilst it may well be that Super is better refined than Special (I honestly do not know the answer to that question), the only characteristic that we are concerned about is the octane. Every fuel (and in fact any substance that can burn) has an auto-ignition point, which is the lowest temperature at which it will spontaneously ignite. So, in order for something to burn, it does not necessarily need a spark or any kind of focused heat; all it needs is heat. This is a very important concept to understand, especially when we are talking about what fuel to use in the hot climate of the UAE. The octane of a fuel is an indication of how “knock-resistant” It is. Engine knock (or detonation) is extremely dangerous, and
16
The Source
can destroy an engine within a matter of seconds. When the sparkplug fires, the mixture within the engine cylinder begins to burn. Many think of it as being an explosion, but it’s actually a relatively slow and controlled burning “wave”. And this is where the danger of knock comes into play. Knock is when there are actually two ignitions taking place within the cylinder that collide with one another. The first is caused by the sparkplug, and the 2nd is the spontaneous ignition due to excessive heat. So, think of this as two ocean waves that meet up and crash into each other. The resulting pressure is immense, and it is this excess of pressure that can destroy the engine by cracking the piston (or even the entire cylinder) like an egg. This is why temperature and octane are such important aspects to consider when we talk about engine longevity. A fuel with a higher octane requires a higher temperature to spontaneously ignite, and as a result is more knock-resistant (and is therefore deemed “safer” for the engine). In many cases you will see the exact same cars being sold here and in Europe, but the European version has more power. This is
specifically done by the engineers to ensure that the engine will survive the UAE’s harsh climate, but unfortunately that means that maximum power must be reduced. They do this within the computer software which controls how the engine operates (usually by retarding the ignition or lowering boost; sometimes a combination of both) The computer does, however, have some very sophisticated security measures in place to protect the engine. It constantly measures the temperature of the air entering the engine, the engine speed, if there is too much or too little fuel being burned, and it also has a knock sensor. If knock is detected, the computer will implement one or more of the safety protocols (such as retarding the ignition advance) in order to protect the engine. And this is why people sometimes report that Super gave them more power. The truth is, they got less power on Special because the computer detected knock and took the necessary steps to protect the engine. So, is the slightly higher cost of Super worth it? I definitely say so, especially in the summer months. In the same way that you might not need car or medical insurance…it does provide some peace of mind.

Oasis Hospital Birthplace of Leaders for the Nation
By Fiona Duerden
The 'birthplace' of al ain
On the evening of 9th August 2015, the emirate’s oldest hospital opened its doors on their beautiful new facility. Built with a grant from the royal family the new Oasis Hospital is an upgrade in every way – more space, better equipment, more specialist doctors and a brand new NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) for very sick or premature babies. But Oasis has not lost its community focus. Founded by Christian missionaries in 1960, and launched in a mud hut donated by Sheikh Zayed, Oasis has always been known as a hospital that cares for the community, both Emirati and expat.
T
oday, any visitor to the hospital can drop in to the Majlis to see the fascinating photographic history of the hospital, a trip well worth making, whether to see the incredible contrast between Al Ain then and now or to marvel at the commitment of the Kennedys and their team, who within a couple of months of arriving in Al Ain were seeing over 200 patients a day. Many of Sheikh Zayed’s children were born at the hospital, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Sheikh Hazza and Sheikh Saif and there are some wonderfully unique portraits of both father and children on display. Fifty-five years on, Oasis Hospital has become known as one of the best hospitals for birth in the UAE, with over 3000 babies born at the hospital each year. Royal babies are still born at the hospital and true to its founding ethos, when you visit the hospital any profit from your treatment goes straight to the treatment of someone less fortunate (often either labourers or refugees).
18

“Oasis is rooted in this community,” says Trey Hulsey, President. “You see that in the way that Oasis has operated here for the past 55 years but today we’re taking steps to meet not only the needs that the community has right now but those that we can see they will have in the years to come. Adding doctors who specialise in taking care of very sick babies and high risk pregnancies, is us making a deliberate choice to put ourselves in a position to meet the needs of this community”. Many Emirati families describe Oasis as their second home. For some families, three generations have been born at Oasis. “Oasis is very comfortable for me”, says Maitha Al Neyadi “I was born there, so when I go back to have my children there it feels like being a child again”. Rashid Al Kabani’s family agree, “Our family has chosen Oasis generation after generation because we heard that it was the best hospital for deliveries. In the seventies people were even coming from other emirates and Oman to deliver at Oasis. Since then, we have never gone anywhere else”. The whole management team take their family hospital status very seriously. “I’m excited that we’re finally delivering on a promise we made
cover story to the community”, says Alex Jankuloski, CEO. “And what’s even better is that we’re developing the new hospital in a way that meets the needs of the people of Al Ain. Our patients have told us they want an area just for women, and they’ve told us they don’t like transferring very sick babies to other hospitals. In the new hospital we’ve remodelled the whole of the first floor to be for women and their husbands only, and with the addition of maternal foetal medicine and a new NICU we’ll be able to keep a lot more babies here”. Alex has also listened to the needs of the Al Ain parents, “The majority of patients who come at night are children; they usually come for things that parents get bugged about at night, earache and suchlike, so we’ve decided to try opening a special UCC (urgent care walk in clinic) just for kids”. Something else that is unique to Oasis Hospital is the VIP birthing rooms with private entrances for families to park and come straight in to their new baby’s room. “Access to the outside was a special dispensation we asked for because we know its what our patients want”, says Trey. “We
were sitting with the person at HAAD who could approve the doors. She’s an Emirati and she asked ‘Why do you want doors to the outside, I’ve never heard of this before’. We laughed and said ‘You must be from Abu Dhabi’. It was our chance to say that the people of Al Ain love being able to park their car and make it home. At Oasis we try to listen, not generalise. Not all Emiratis are the same and we want to take care of the people of Al Ain”. Dr Christel Brabon, head of the women’s clinic, agrees that not all women are the same. She and her team offer mums the full range of birth experiences, whether fully natural with a doula or with pain management options. “We can also offer mums the option to have normal delivery after you’ve had a previous caesarean
section. We really encourage that and we have a good success rate”. Wherever possible they will also help you find a doctor that shares your first language, whether for birth or Gynaecology. “We know that is something that can make a big difference for women” she says. “From the beginning our goal was to help the mother and child and that remains our hope today as we provide maternal and foetal care. I’m excited that in the new hospital we can provide specialist care for high risk pregnancies, so we can help more mums and babies than ever before”. “I think people know that we care about them more than we care about making money or prestige” adds Trey. “When people know they are cared for they can feel the difference”.

AL NOOR HOSPITAL AND DR. KHALED ABDEL AAL INTRODUCE NEW VASCULAR SURGERY DEPARTMENT Over the past few months I have been fortunate enough to interview some exceptional doctors at Al Noor Hospital and my latest visit with Dr. Khaled Abdel Aal was in line with the extremely high standards I had become accustomed to.

D
r. Khaled, who is relatively new to Al Ain, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to a field of surgery that was previously out-sourced or made possible through visiting surgeons from other regions of the country. Of Egyptian origin, the doctor is a citizen of France where he studied and honed his profession before returning to Egypt to assist in spreading the necessary P.V.D. (peripheral vascular disease) awareness his people were in dire need of. Peripheral vascular diseases (PVDs) are circulation disorders that affect blood vessels outside of the heart and brain. PVD typically strikes the veins and arteries that supply the arms, legs, and organs located below your stomach. These are the blood vessels that are distant from the heart.
a vehicle personifying success in accordance with every international standard and compliance.
•
Early diagnosis is paramount to the prevention of severe complications.
Dr. Khaled spent 8 years in Cairo creating and bringing to fruition a pilot project vascular surgery department in conjunction with the National Institute of Diabetes, which has its largest Middle Eastern chapter in the Egyptian capital. Having an occurrence of diabetes that ranks in the top 5 countries worldwide, the N.I.D. in Cairo had its hands full treating the many complications associated with diabetes except those of a vascular nature. “Five years after inception of the department, we were running the largest sector of the entire organization, equipped with 62 beds, 3,000 out patients per month and in excess of 400 operations per year.” Dr. Khaled became not only an instrument of awareness but the founder of
•
Hypertension, smoking and hypercholesterolemia are considered risk factors for developing P.V.D.
Fortunately for us, the good doctor has recently made his home in Al Ain, opting for a cultural climate that better served the education requirements of his children, with a heavier focus on the religious and linguistic priorities essential to his family’s heritage. Now he is busying himself spreading that same PVD awareness right here in Al Ain and our people are no strangers to the complications associated with diabetes! Let’s look at some of the statistics associated with P.V.D.: •
We have an unusually high incidence of diabetes in this country and 60% of diabetics have a propensity to peripheral vascular disease!
•
Diabetes alone is more aggressive in the deterioration of overall health than all 3 of the previously mentioned disorders
•
Obesity is also a huge concern as it is a direct cause of P.V.D.
Progress made in the treatment of P.V.D. Prior to today’s innovative technology, damaged blood vessels were treated with open surgery methodology which was more invasive and as such, associated with a much higher degree of risk. Keep in mind
that the patients suffering from PVD’s, more often than not, already belong to a high risk social sector that includes smokers, diabetics and those battling hypertension. Now we operate via endovascular techniques that treat lesions from inside the vein or artery, resulting in a far less invasive procedure with an exponentially faster recovery period. “Al Noor Hospital now provides all types of venous and arterial disease related services, with far fewer complications and is in compliance with all international standards. Unlike in many other facilities, I provide my patients with A-Z services and am present during every step of the treatment, including diagnosis, surgery and recovery.” Before leaving Al Noor Hospital and Dr. Khalid, I asked him what he thought the essential qualities of a good Doctor were and this was the answer I received from a man I would, without question, trust in the event of a vascular medical emergency. “I believe the most important quality is a general love for people. As much as I welcome the opportunity to practice surgery – something that took years to perfect – I am a strong believer in awareness related, early detection which can often eliminate the need for surgery altogether. This, to me, is ultimate success! A physician must constantly move in the direction of self improvement and continuous learning to fulfill their responsibilities. You must be extremely qualified to be in a position to make decisions for others and these decisions must always be based on the “Me Test” – consider each decision made on behalf of a patient as a decision made for yourself!”
“Five years after inception of the department, we were running the largest sector of the entire organization, equipped with 62 beds, 3,000 out patients per month and in excess of 400 operations per year.”

Aviation is an industry that has defined progress & development over the last 100+ years. It has been the driving force in building a globalized world, breaking barriers between countries & cultures, connecting people & places, creating jobs and economic opportunities. From a handful of travelers using planes in the early days to the more than 3.3 billion that travelled in 2014, and to the forecasted 6 billion+ that will travel by 2030, there is unanimous agreement that growth and expansion will continue into the foreseeable future.
A
viation has always been a future focused industry when it comes to aircraft, infrastructure & technology, but there has been one key element that seems to have been left out and that is PEOPLE. There have been numerous articles on the impending shortages of skilled manpower that the industry will face, which is further complicated by the mis-match of current skills with required skills. The 2015 Boeing Pilot and Technical Outlook forecasts that between now and 2034, the aviation industry will need to supply more than one million new aviation personnel - 558,000 commercial airline pilots and 609,000 maintenance technicians. These forecasts cover only two of the hundreds of different job roles that are required by the industry! Growth in the aviation industry has always been defined by the growth in passengers and airline fleets. It is now time for us to redefine growth by the number of aviation professionals that we are able to groom and add to the industry. We need to build on this culture of sharing by constructive interaction, discussions and debates. We need to move to a training culture that is able to merge the best of face to face classroom sessions, online-on demand courses and on the job learning to deliver a training experience that is relevant to the ever changing needs of the industry. This dynamic training culture will benefit not just trainees but also companies and organisations – as it will give them access to a pool of knowledgeable and well trained aviation professionals.
Gulf Centre for Aviation Studies (GCAS), training arm of Abu Dhabi Airports and Edgewater Middle East Training Centre are proud to present to you The Airport Airline Management Program or AAMP, which will give trainees access to dynamic and ondemand training at a very reasonable cost. This program combines the best of all worlds – allowing trainees to learn no matter where they are with the instructor assisted online modules, but also providing a face to face classroom element allowing them to interact with experienced trainers and fellow trainees. In the first stage AAMP gives trainees a broad overview of the aviation industry and equips them with skills that are relevant no matter which job role they choose. The second stage then gives them the opportunity to choose and specialize in airport or airline relevant courses, equipping them with the skills necessary to effectively work in an airport or airline. A wealth of information at the fraction of the cost of a traditional program! Being a program offered in a blended learning (online & classroom) format, AAMP will continue to evolve with new courses and modules being added based on the latest trends or requirements of the industry. As the program expands, trainees will be able to interact with peers from all around the world, giving them valuable insights on how the industry is trending across the world. AAMP – a unique aviation training concept where the learning paradigms are reengineered to its best. If you wish to know more about the AAMP, please contact Edgewater Middle East at +9713 7610015 or by email training@edgewater.ae 26

Forget the apple teachers need support! As the husband of a teacher, I am appalled at the number of sensational articles published chronicling the latest sins of educators. People salivate over an opportunity to like, share and comment on any story that exposes even the slightest wrong-doing associated with a teacher.

ust imagine, for a moment, headlines such as these breaking the daily media platforms: “Teacher Gives Own Time and Money to Buy Supplies for Students” or “Teacher Spends Hours Each Evening Planning Lessons and Grading Papers” or perhaps “Teacher Voluntarily Supports Students at Sporting Events”. I don’t recall seeing much, if any, of this type of content dominating the news, yet these are the real life tales of so many unsung heroes that help form the building blocks of every nation’s future.
With so much negativity among the many armchair critics and another school year gathering momentum, there are a few things the public should know about my wife and those that share her passion. 1. Teachers believe in what they teach. They know their curriculums inside out, and in spite of the often reluctant audiences, are passionate about preparing their children for life beyond school. 2. They love their jobs! Certainly there are dark moments filled with uncertainty and an occasional overwhelming urge to escape to a warm and fuzzy comfort zone, but this can be said about any occupation. At the end of the day, why would any sane individual put up with being stabbed with pencils by toddlers, irate and unreasonable parents and a public school system that is often less than perfect, especially when dealing with the administration, unless they loved their work? I, for one, would not last a day dealing with the responsibilities that are part and parcel of my better half’s daily routine!

3. They love your children! That’s right, even yours. The one that spends more time chatting with friends than listening, rolls their eyes at every word uttered by the teacher and will try to convince even the wisest of educators that their brief personal life experiences far exceed those of any adult. Teachers spend many a night worrying about your children and because they see potential in all of them, insuring their success in life is a common goal. 4. They need your support. Let’s face it, the world needs awesome teachers and both educators and parents alike, share a common goal of crafting responsible, well adjusted adults that will one day offer their unique contributions to society. Parents know their children better than anyone and if the afore mentioned is to be the result, then please take this humble advice: Stop the coddling, hand-holding, blame transferring and making of excuses; I know you love them and the world is a cruel place, but in reality, inward focused teenagers grow into entitled adults; the kind of people to whom regular rules don’t apply, are never at fault and have difficulties getting along with others. The kind of people you dread having as coworkers and would simply never accept as friends! Even though it’s tempting to smooth their ruffled feathers, consider a different approach. Urge them to work even harder on those group projects in spite of their often mean team members. And that teacher they don’t seem to mesh with requires an even bigger effort towards understanding rather than an air of indifference. They may get angry and it may be difficult but you will be raising a child that possesses all the right qualities! And for goodness sake, don’t forget to thank a teacher this year!
