y mind is still on vacation mode, trying to cope with a body that’s dragging its exhausted spirit from meetings to school drop-offs and pick-ups, then back to meetings again where we discuss and plan more meetings; all to help conciliate the fear of not accomplishing much of anything!

I’m exhausted and September has barely crossed the halfway mark – how will I make it through the rest of the year? Getting back into a routine after an amazing vacation is never an easy thing and as reality brutally steamrolls its way back into our lives, the blissful days of happy-go-lucky relaxation become distant memories – at least that’s how it’s been for me, the “Drama King”! Enough of that self serving pity! The truth of the matter is that we are back in a town we have grown very fond of and although I am back at the old grind, I can’t complain. After all, how many gigs allow a man to explore his community to the extent I have been blessed with – Al Ain is my oyster and I’m piling on the hot sauce at every possible stop. And as is the case every year at this time, the oyster bar I call home has recruited a whole new line-up of service staff, all eager to make their mark in the sand. In this issue of The Source one of the topics of interest is the addiction associated with expat living. We also seize the opportunity to act as good ambassadors of our dessert home by welcoming the many newcomers to The Garden City. Welcome to Al Ain and as you settle in to your new home, be sure to invite us in every two weeks to help keep you company. Happy Reading!

Genius Idea To Stop People From Littering

UK organization Hubbub plans to clean up the streets of London through its #neatstreets campaign. One clever project sees smokers vote on various topics by placing their cigarette butts into clear divided containers in public areas; another uses devices that play music when a cigarette butt is inserted; and yet another encourages gum-chewers to connect the dots on specially designed boards. “Our public polling discovered that a staggering 86 per cent of people think littering is a disgusting habit yet only 15 per cent of us would actually confront someone and tell them that,” the organization writes on its webpage. “This is why from May to October we’re trialling a new approach to tackling littering on Villiers Street, Westminster, using the latest thinking on behaviour change and awareness raising from around the world.”

cover story

“THE FESTIVAL of SACRIFICE” What is Eid al-Adha? At the end of the Hajj (annual pilgrimage to Makkah), Muslims throughout the world celebrate the holiday of Eid al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice).

What does Eid al-Adha commemorate? During the Hajj, Muslims remember and commemorate the trials and triumphs of the Prophet Abraham. The Qur'an describes Abraham as follows:

Surely Abraham was an example, obedient to “Allah, by nature upright, and he was not of the

polytheists. He was grateful for our bounties. We chose him and guided him unto a right path. We gave him good in this world, and in the next he will most surely be among the righteous.

(Qur'an 16:120-121)

cover story "Surely Abraham was an example, obedient to Allah, by nature upright, and he was not of the polytheists. He was grateful for our bounties. We chose him and guided him unto a right path. We gave him good in this world, and in the next he will most surely be among the righteous." (Qur'an 16:120-121)

pronounce His name at the solemn act of taking life.

One of Abraham's main trials was to face the command of Allah to kill his only son. Upon hearing this command, he prepared to submit to Allah's will. When he was all prepared to do it, Allah revealed to him that his "sacrifice" had already been fulfilled. He had shown that his love for his Lord superceded all others, that he would lay down his own life or the lives of those dear to him in order to submit to God.

The meat from the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha is mostly given away to others. One-third is eaten by immediate family and relatives, one-third is given away to friends, and one-third is donated to the poor. The act symbolizes the willingness to give up things that are of benefit or close to our hearts, in order to follow Allah's commands. It also symbolizes the willingness to sacrifice our own bounties, in order to strengthen ties of friendship and help those who are in need. Muslims recognize that all blessings come from Allah, and should open their hearts and share with others.

Why do Muslims sacrifice an animal on this day? During the celebration of Eid al-Adha, Muslims commemorate and remember Abraham's trials, by themselves slaughtering an animal such as a sheep, camel, or goat. This action is very often misunderstood by those outside the faith. Allah gave us power over animals and allowed us to eat meat, but only if we

Muslims slaughter animals in the same way throughout the year. By saying the name of Allah at the time of slaughter, we are reminded that life is sacred.

It is very important to understand that the sacrifice itself, as practiced by Muslims, has nothing to do with atoning for our sins or using the blood to wash ourselves from sin. This is a misunderstanding by those of previous generations: "It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah; it is your

piety that reaches Him" (Qur'an 22:37). The symbolism is in the attitude - a willingness to make sacrifices in our lives in order to stay on the Straight Path. Each of us makes small sacrifices, giving up things that are fun or important to us. A true Muslim, one who submits his or herself completely to the Lord, is willing to follow Allah's commands completely and obediently. It is this strength of heart, purity in faith, and willing obedience that our Lord desires from us.

What else do Muslims do to celebrate the holiday? On the first morning of Eid al-Adha, Muslims around the world attend morning prayers at their local mosques. Prayers are followed by visits with family and friends, and the exchange of greetings and gifts. During the initial stages of celebration, arrangements are made for the slaughter of an animal. The meat is distributed during the days of the holiday or shortly thereafter. Be sure to take part in the festivities at the many venues in and around Al Ain this Eid, and enjoy the spirit of praise and giving throughout the Garden City and beyond.

a Play Partner for Learning Every child is a miracle - Little Pearls Nursery set to redefine childcare

Ms. Alison Muir Farrah

Every child is precious. When you leave your child in a child care setting, they need to feel comfortable and safe, and be able to turn to a caring teacher for reassurance. They want familiar, friendly faces that support, and as effective listening play partners, organize exciting activities and experiences. Little Pearls Nursery does this, exploring the world we live in, through the eyes of children.

Children need to see us listening to them, using language to explain thoughts, sharing a sense of humour and socializing. At LPN we look for opportunities to encourage children to speak and ask them for their thoughts and opinions during our educational activities. Talking and playing with children, promotes their language and social skills. What makes us different? Ms. ALISON MUIR FARRAH, the Head of Little Pearls Nursery, an accomplished childcare professional with varied experience in nurseries and schools in the UK and Middle East spoke at length to The SOURCE on the distinct features of Little Pearls Nursery. “International teachers including native English speaking teachers from the UK, US and Europe, an EYFS curriculum, exclusively prepared spacious classrooms with learning materials specially designed for children, a shaded play area with safety flooring and modern play equipment, sprawling lawns for outdoor activities, a secure and caring environment with CCTV surveillance with facility for parents to observe online and a well equipped clinic etc., make us different”. “It is not just a nursery, it is a home away from home for children where play is linked to learning, preparing them for a smooth transition to school.”

20

The Source

We greet our children in a special way! Greetings are important. “They are recognition of a child’s arrival at nursery and help children feel a part of the nursery setting. We find ways of individually greeting children which helps them feel wanted, valued and reassured, and each greeting is accompanied by a big smile” Alison added. Children are taught to treat each other with positivity and respect, creating a happy environment for effective learning and play. Children then develop self-awareness, academic, physical and creative abilities, allowing each child to reach their full potential in every way. The Importance of Play Children are naturally curious and like to explore and discover. They have their own idiosyncrasies that make them adventurous explorers eager to learn given the right support and encouragement from adults and their peers. We understand that play is paramount in a learning environment and spontaneous and structured play is linked in our EYFS curriculum. Role play at LPN is another vital part of the EYFS curriculum we follow. It forms the

basis of storytelling, writing, knowledge and understanding of their world. It provides opportunities for children to explore everyday life events that help develop math, language and communication skills as well as their creativity and most importantly, it’s fun! Parental Partnership Little Pearls Nursery fosters partnerships with parents, involving them in social gatherings, daily communications, concerts, festivals, and coffee mornings. They are your children and your ideas are important to us as we strive to provide the best environment for their development. Registration is open and we encourage parents to visit the nursery to experience our rich learning environment. For more details, visit www.littlepearlsnursery.com or contact us at 03-7673544

TIPS FOR MAKING EXERCISE A

FAMILY AFFAIR

Parents need to engage in regular physical activity, not only for their own health, but for their children’s benefit, as well. Children learn by example. Let your children know that you enjoy exercising because it's an important part of a healthy lifestyle, it helps you get stronger and gives you more energy, which helps make you look and feel better about yourself.

I

t can be difficult for parents to fit exercise into their family’s busy schedules. With a little planning and creativity, however, you can find ways to exercise with your children. Listed below are some simple ways you can exercise with your children:

Infant through Preschool Aged Children •

• •

22

Grab the stroller and go for a brisk walk with your children. You could also purchase a jogging stroller, which allows you to walk faster, jog, or run at a fast pace while pushing the stroller. Use a back carrier to transport young children. Carrying the added weight can help burn extra calories as you walk. If your child is walking, take a leisurely stroll around the block or at a nearby park. Remember to limit the distance; little legs can tire quickly.

Turn on some lively music and dance with your children.

Use an infant carrier or bike trailer to go on a bike ride with your children.

The Source

Grade School Aged Children •

Try in-line skating or skating. Be sure that everyone is equipped with helmets and protective gear.

Spend an afternoon at the park or playground. Bring along a flying disc or football so that you and your children can play together.

Play a game of catch or kickball in your backyard.

Go for a hike in the forest or bicycle ride on a nearby nature trail.

Let your children help you in the yard. They can help you dig holes, plant flowers, and rake leaves.

Teenage Children •

Go for a walk with your children after dinner each night.

Purchase a family membership at a local health club and work out together several days each week.

Play tennis, golf or basketball with your children.

Register your family for a run or walk event in your area. You can also train together before the event.

Join a community volleyball or softball team that is open to teens and adults.

5 THINGS I LEARNED WHEN I QUIT MY SIX-FIGURE LIFE AND MOVED TO

MEXICO

DUTTONGEDDIT… When I was a boy, my dad would sometimes take me sailing. He regularly crewed the boat of a friend, a man who will forever live large in my imagination for his custom of wearing a pair of underpants on his head as a hat.

A

A man like that deserves to live large in everyone’s imagination.

fter spending the afternoon hurling my lunch over the side, the adventure would conclude - as all maritime adventures must - in the pub. The men would order a beer each, a lemon squash and aspirin for me, and one of them would tear open a packet of chips in such a way that everyone could share. Then they’d yabber on about stuff that adult males yabber on about. An enduring subject of discussion was the owner of the establishment, a stout lady of hair-trigger temperament with masses of curly blond locks. Boy, how it tickled my fancy to hear her referred to (affectionately, to be sure) as Miss Piggy. Lacking the filter adults use to differentiate between things to blurt out and things best unblurted, I relayed my enthusiasm for the nickname to Pig-minor, a lad at my school, three years older and an order of magnitude bigger and meaner than I, the runt of my grade. Take it for granted that it stung when he poleaxed my jaw. Fair enough. I deserved it. And thus, just as Pig-little’s fist smashed into my gums, we smash into the subject of this article. Some things are better left unsaid, but should they be said, the speaker must accept responsibility. Australia’s freshly-culled Prime Minister, Tony Abbot, returned not-so-long ago from a meeting on climate

change in PNG where he doubtless floored the crowd with his conviction that “coal is good for humanity” and that the appropriate response to the climate crisis is to dig up everything burnable and convert it into CO2 ASAP. Low-lying Pacific island nations at the same meeting called for a global moratorium on new coal mines. How they must shake their heads at Australia in disbelief and despair… Abbot and his colleagues don’t care. In fact, they’re cracking jokes about it. In conversation with the Immigration Minister, Peter Dutton, Mr Abbot noted that the meeting for which they were waiting shared something in common with the meeting in New Guinea. It was slow. Dutton then remarked, “time doesn’t mean anything when you’re about to have water lapping at your door.” I heard a worse joke once, but that had Hitler in it. Unfortunately for the pair, the microphone dangling above their heads caught the lot. The sword metaphor is hard to resist.

New in the city? Looking for a strong sense of community connection? You may be bursting with questions about what to do, where to go in Al Ain? But there are organizations that make expats get connected with everyone else. few links and websites can make you feel not an alien to a seemingly foreign community. Flipping through the websites will lead you the answers that sometimes even the “too much information” and overload data available in the Internet cannot give you the specific answers. Relocating could be a challenge, if not daunting. But everything would be a breeze.

One remarkable website is The ExpatWoman.com which is teeming with a wealth of information-from all over the globe. While there is not much here in Al Ain, their Middle East forums have been active for 12 years. It is made up of women members only, membership for women is fast and free. Expats who come here who to anything under the sun “new fuel prices”, to what’s new in Abu Dhabi, to where to get a big discount on proper pampering for facials and massage.

28

The Source

social & community forum The website has a wealth of information for women, mothers or those starting a family, ranging from where to rent a room, to pointers on which centers to go to learn the Arabic language and the like. A good tip from the website is to learn the language. It is best to add the most useful words and phrases to your vocabulary. Words such as a greeting: Sabah al khair (good morning) to Shukran thank you) would get you a nod, or better yet, a smile from the locals. Learning the language could go a long way. There is another group that’s been holding its runs in Al Ain. The Harsh House Harriers—a friendly set up of walking and running enthusiasts belonging to every age and nationality. The group, according to reports, meets every week to run “chosen tracks” around Abu Dhabi. Often these runs are celebrated with barbecues and hash splashes. Explore and Discover the City’s Sights A nice way to start is to welcome change and embrace it. Begin with exploring the oasis city of Al Ain and learning its diverse history and rich culture. Historically, Al Ain’s rich history has made the Al Ain area the only site in the United Arab Emirates to be inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

Al Ain’s craggy mountain range of Jebel Hafeet is a must see. Those with the adventurous streak will enjoy driving up to Jebel Hafeet's summit which promises stunning views of the city and the neighboring country, Oman. It is easy to get around Al Ain. Al Ain is an excellent destination for travellers interested in local culture. The attractions at the Al Ain Zoo draw a lot of families and children to the place. It houses one of the largest animal enclosures where endemic mammals such as the Arabian antelope and Oryx can be seen, as well as African gazelles and eland can be found. It also has lions, tigers, pumas, black and spotted leopards, and jaguars. There is a monkey compound, aviary section and reptile house. The city’s many relaxing public parks and gardens offer a welcome respite and shade on long, summer days and great for playground facilities. With nice landscaping elements, impressive fountains and lighting displays at night. Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum is a favourite stopover. The palace of the late UAE President Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyana which was built in 1937, the original structure comprised a private residence for the ruler and his family within the complex of courtyards. Learn how a desert way of life has helped from the resilient and hospitable character of Abu Dhabi emirate.

Other must-see places include the interesting fortress called Al-Jahili Fort is a gloriously bulky building housing a wealth of information about Al Ain and Emirati history. There is the interesting Camel Market is an excellent opportunity to see camels up close. The Hili Archaeological Park is a popular spot for archaeology buffs. It is mostly because of the important discoveries that Al Ain has been inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The park is amid a protected area and surrounded by a palm tree oasis. Most of the finds from the site are on display at Al Ain National Museum, which does a good job of putting the site into context. Never to be missed is Mubazzarah Park is an isolated spot of green amid the rocky and dry landscape. This natural oasis has mineral hot springs to soak in and is a favourite spot with picnicking families on the weekends. Another one is Hili Fun City, one of the largest and most popular theme parks in the UAE. The park features over 40 rides including a rollercoaster and an elevated sky-flyer. An annual festival, celebrating the culture and history of the Emirates, attracts thousands of visitors from across the region. Stop being strangers to the city. It is waiting to be explored.

- CALAMARI “SAWITO” - PRAWNSMALOUF’S CROQUETTES ROAST - BITTERLAMB BALLEN

TRY THIS MALOUF’S ROAST LAMB RECIPE OVER EID Lamb really benefits from the roasting process as it brings out its rich, succulent flavour. And with lamb, the classic way of roasting is with garlic and rosemary. That is how it’s done in this recipe by Cle Dubai. Roasting also adds the advantage of filling your kitchen with delicious, mouth watering aromas. The most important thing while roasting lamb is to not overcook it- a little pink on the inside and you have a job well done!

INGREDIENTS: • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 teaspoon sea salt to taste - garlic- crushed with 1 teaspoon sea salt to taste - rosemary 3 table spoon - Baharat (spice mixture) 1piece - lemon 1 kg - leg of lamb 80ml - olive oil 6 pieces - whole shallots 12 pieces - small potatoes 12 pieces - baby carrots 3 pieces - parsnips, halved half piece - small butternut pumpkin, peeled and cut into wedges

METHOD: 1. Preheat the oven to 220°C. 2. Mix the garlic paste with the baharat. Cut the lemon in half and rub it all over the lamb.

3. Use your fingers to massage the spice paste all over the meat, making sure to reach all the cavities. 4. Put half of the olive oil into a baking dish, add the lamb and cook in the centre of the oven for 20 minutes. Turn the oven down to 180°C and cook the lamb for a further 20 minutes. 5. Now take the dish out of the oven and pour the rest of the oil into the base of the pan. 6. Add all the vegetables, garlic and rosemary and sprinkle with a little salt. Shake them around as well as you can to coat with the oil. 7. Put the pan back in the oven and cook for another 40 minutes. Check from time to time and turn the vegetables around in the pan to make sure they cook evenly. 8. The 80 minutes’ cooking time will give a medium–rare result. Allow the meat to stand for a good 10 minutes before carving and serving with the pan juices.

Getting Around

California in Green Style For decades California has burnished its image as the Golden State thanks to its historic Gold Rush days, seemingly endless strands of sun-drenched beaches and being home to a shiny fellow named Oscar who signifies the highest achievements in the film industry. But increasingly, the state is finding itself in the limelight as a prominent Green State as well, creating a sustainability buzz with everything from LEED-certified hotels to serving as headquarters for Tesla Motors, creators of the world’s first all-electric luxury sedan.

C

heck out the new initiatives designed to let you experience California in an ecofriendly style that’s certain to leave other destinations green with envy.

Sustainable Stays Everyone loves a chic and stylish place to lay your head after an eventful day, but it’s so much nicer when your environs are LEED certified or include some other environmentally sensitive elements that will leave both you and the planet happy. Napa Valley is famous for more than just its world-class wine, it’s also home to Bardessono, a 62-room LEED-platinum resort where luxury is paired with a very pronounced green streak. It also integrates elements like an underground geothermal system to heat and cool guestrooms and the spa, relies on more than 900 rooftop solar panels to provide a major portion of the resort’s power and uses wood acquired from salvaged trees to accent rooms and public areas. Nestled next to Yosemite National Park, the historic Evergreen Lodge lives up to its name bristling with progressive practices ranging from being certified as a founding B Corporation to implementing the first gray water system in the area. San Francisco hotels go for the gold in sustainability such as Hotel Carlton which is LEED Gold and San Francisco Green Business certified.

my world Green Style A trend-setter in every category it touches, California brings a certain sizzle to how things are done here. And that extends to green and sustainable travels as well. Why just rent a car on your next visit when you can hit the road in a Tesla Model S, the world’s first all-electric luxury sedan. With a coastline that’s nearly 900 miles long, most visits to California are bound to include some time spent near the ocean. Sailboat charters and tours, whether on a DIY bareboat excursion or a skippered experience, are a great way to get on the water and enjoy the coast from a see-worthy perspective. Along the Central Coast, Monterey Bay is not only the location of one of the world’s great aquariums, it’s also home to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary also known as the “Serengeti of the Sea,” because of its amazing bio-diversity. This rich ecosystem is where you have excellent opportunities to see whales, dolphins and other marine life. Sunny San Diego is also a postcard-perfect playground for the spinnaker set. Sailing tours here offer Instagram-worthy views of the Coronado Bay Bridge and downtown skyline as well as open ocean sails outside San Diego Bay. Step Ahead: California Biking, Hiking and Walking Filled with more than 120 national and state parks and a seemingly endless array of trails, bike paths and eclectic cities perfect for discovering by foot, California offers incredible opportunities for peoplepowered exploration. Case in point: San Francisco, with dozens of distinct neighborhoods, is perfect for city walks. You can explore on your own or go on a guided tour. And as long as you know which hills to avoid, biking the city is a great way to roll too, especially with the city’s new bikeshare program.

Who says no one walks in LA? The truth is there are great walking neighborhoods stretching from the Venice Beach Boardwalk to downtown’s Historic Core. All are carbon neutral but positively fun. LA is also home to CicLAvia, the nation’s largest open streets event that is a definitive LA mash-up of bikes, pedestrians and good times. Another bike ride not to miss in the Southland is the resort rides of Palm Springs, where you can cruise everywhere from posh, palm-lined neighborhoods to the popular boutiques, restaurants and cafes along Palm Canyon Drive. Self-guided tour maps are available for download. Ride On: California Public Transportation Andrew Smith Hallidie, the inventor of San Francisco’s iconic cable car system, most likely had no idea his beloved trolleys would not only become a National Historic Landmark, but also a signature way to experience the city while having a minimal impact on the environment. Three cable lines: Powell-Hyde, Powell-Mason and California Street, criss-cross the city taking you to many of San Francisco’s most notable sites. Down in LA, the car is still king, but the city’s Metro system continues to expand the reach of the integrated bus, subway and light rail system. One of the best ways locals and visitors alike can take advantage of LA’s Metro is to explore the city via themed, self-guided itineraries developed for the city’s Car Free LA initiative. One of the world’s most famous national parks, Yosemite features a dizzying array of hikes, treks and bike rides with over 750 miles of trails to explore ranging from wildflower walks to more difficult treks like Pohono Trail (Glacier Point). Bicycles are welcome on Yosemite Valley’s 12 miles of paved bike paths.
