We may not know much about the thousands of refugees currently treading in limbo’s waters, while similar mobs around the globe deliberate their ultimate fate, but we do know this: they are definitely drowning; they are frightened victims of horrific crimes against humanity that we only read about or watch on the news whilst lounging in our comfortable homes either before, during or after a plentiful and satiating meal; they are people that need our help and we cannot let personal fear prevent us from doing what is the right and above all, human thing to do! Imagine, for one moment, that the victims were you and your children – would you not be praying for an act of human kindness?

he other day I was walking along a beach when suddenly the screams of someone drowning 30 meters from shore disturbed the serenity of my stroll. Miraculously, a rope long enough to reach the person in peril was within my grasp and just as I was preparing to toss out the life line, a crowd of people appeared demanding to know if I knew anything at all about the person drowning. In fact, was the individual really drowning – good question? It certainly seemed as though they were but none the less, an apprehensive mob had managed to place doubt in the way of crucial action. And furthermore, a call for calm and calculated diplomacy, from what looked to be a politician of sorts amidst the crowd, set off an intense and impassioned debate; in fact, so frenzied was the argument, that by the time things calmed down, the drowning victim was nowhere to be seen. Problem solved! The rope didn’t get wet, the crowd dispersed and no one’s day suffered any further inconvenience – it was probably someone out for a bit of a swim any way and by now, back on shore safe and sound.

Loved Ones Lost The desert sun has fallen across the barren land, where the lone tree stood, arms outstretched where the wind whistled a haunting melody the names of Love ones Lost where the sand drifted aimlessly lookin, searching the far off horizon.... for even a glimpse ...of Love ones lost... Where the family wailed and the child played on lost in a world of his ow, oblivious of the cold, piercing truth As the sun buried itself into the warm, golden sand.. We lower the bodies of Loved ones lost... Where mums looked on and fathers bent over ... What a sacrifice .... A parent burying a child... For he fought a war not his ... and battled the stray bullet that pierced his heart .... The sun has now died and the night has become cold ... and all that remains is the haunting memories of Loved ones lost....... by: Feeyola Dawood

A Letter to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai Your Highness, I am writing today because SeaWorld, a corporation that is garnering international condemnation for its treatment of marine animals, is trying to export its dying business model to Dubai. I am asking you, a respected leader and businessperson who works to drive a robust economy in Dubai, for your help in keeping SeaWorld out. I was pleased to be approached to become SeaWorld Dubai's senior trainer-tasked with acclimating, training, and performing with the whales as well as managing and training the staff-before the project was put on hold in 2009. I was very much looking forward to making Dubai my home. I have a profound respect and appreciation for your country, its culture, and your family. During my 14-year career, I was promoted to the highest rank of orca trainer at SeaWorld, where I trained and swam with orcas at the SeaWorld parks in California and Texas, and I also acted as supervisor of orca training at Marineland in France. I eventually came to realize that marine theme parks like SeaWorld must be relegated to the history booksand I'm not alone in that belief. In Dubai and around the world, there is a growing backlash against keeping marine animals in captivity. Since the debut of the riveting documentary Blackfish, which has been viewed by more than 150 million people worldwide; and the releases of both my book, Beneath the Surface, and David Kirby's book, Death at SeaWorld; as well as PETA's intensified educational campaign, people have been staying away from SeaWorld in droves. Earnings are down a crushing 84 percent. Fortune referred to the company as a "sinkhole," and Standard & Poor's lowered its credit rating to "junk" status. Attendance is down, even with the parks slashing ticket prices and spending $10 million on a media blitz. Dozens of SeaWorld's former corporate partners have severed their ties. Nearly 236,000 people have already signed petitions asking the government of Dubai to reject SeaWorld's proposal. SeaWorld is also drowning in lawsuits. The most recent one, filed in a U.S. federal court, alleges that the corporation hid the mistreatment of its captive orcas by using deceptive and false advertising. Three similar lawsuits have been filed against SeaWorld this year alone. There was outrage throughout the United Arab Emirates a few years ago when a whale shark, Sammy, was captured near Jebel Ali. After a massive public response and a decree issued by Minister of Environment and Water His Excellency Dr. Rashid Ahmad bin Fahad to free her, Sammy was released back into the Arabian Gulf. The Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo faced the same public outrage when at least 40 sharks died prior to its grand opening in 2008. Letters to the editor throughout the Emirates denounced the conditions for animals kept in cages and tanks. Eight whales-valued at between US$15 million and $20 million each-died in SeaWorld's tanks in the last 10 years alone, and two orcas recently died at France's Marineland. Allowing SeaWorld to take its cruel business model to Dubai-where kind people do not want it-would be a public relations disaster. I hope you, as someone deeply invested in the future of Dubai, will stop SeaWorld from trying to use your city as a life raft for its antiquated water circus. Dubai would be throwing money down the drain if it invests one dirham in SeaWorld. Most respectfully yours, John Hargrove

WHY MEN ARE MORE LIKELY TO FALL IN LOVE HARDER AND FASTER THAN WOMEN

By: Lauren Martin

urban woman

There’s a common misconception women are crazy, running around looking for men to pour all our love into, dupe into a relationship and all but smother with possession and affection. And men? Men are empty.

A

ny woman who’s been in a relationship, however, knows this image of the woman is completely falsified. According to Marissa Harrison, a psychologist from Pennsylvania State University, women are much more cautious when it comes to love and men have a tendency to fall in - hard and fast. Participants in a study were asked how long it took them to say “I love you.” Not surprisingly, men were prone to say it much faster than women, declaring their love after just a few weeks compared to women, who took a few months. But the real question we have is: Why? Why are men falling in love faster than women? Why are the usually emotionless, stone-cold-repressed-feelings “macho men” of the world weeping like the star of a Nicholas Sparks novel? They’ve spent their lives suppressing emotions. Once a pipe bursts, it’s almost impossible to stop the flow. Men are the same way. For years, they’ve been bottling up their emotions, pushing away any type of maternal guidance and ignoring their urge for nurture. Once they get it, however, they can’t live without it anymore. They’ve let everything out, and they’ll be damned if they’re going to put it back in again. Men are much more territorial than women. Women may have a harder time with the chase, but men have a harder time with the hold. Men may be harder to catch, but once they’re caught, they’re impossible to shake. They become territorial over their partners the same way they once did their independence and their bachelor pads. They like to display ownership and power, while also relinquishing all their emotional control. They don’t question their emotions - and they don’t have their emotions questioned. Unlike women, who are taught to question every thought and feeling, men go with their gut and trust it instinctively. They weren’t raised to wonder if they’re being “too emotional” or acting “crazy.” They don’t have to explain their feelings or second-guess them because they’ve never been told those feelings are wrong. Thus, men don’t second-guess when they’re in love. They haven’t experienced this type of connection before. Women have close, emotional connections with one another all the time. Men don’t get deep, emotional or “gushy” with one another. They don’t tell each other their innermost secrets and desires, and they don’t share feelings and advice. When they finally experience the connection women expect from every relationship, they have a hard time letting it go. They want to be like their dad, but still need their mom. Men may want to act like the strong, proud fathers they grew up admiring, but they really just want to be the little boy who is taken care of again.

SUCCESS Meet Ahmed Al Nasseri; a most intriguing gentleman who helped turn an afternoon chat over coffee into an inspiring affair that led to a story of considerable interest and certainly worth sharing with our readers. At The Source, we are always on the lookout for interesting people and if the individuals happen to be indigenous, with noteworthy contributions to the community we live in, then let the presses roll!

D

r. Ahmed Al Nasseri was born right here in Al Ain and grew up in a family of 10 children, where a great deal of emphasis was placed on education and achievement. His parents were never advocates of spoiling their children, adopting a motto of “if you want something, work for it”, so after finishing high school and his Bachelor’s degree, Ahmed quickly realized that financial independence and entrepreneurism were irrefutably linked. He was also quick to discover that given a healthy amount of initiative and common sense, it was relatively easy to succeed in business in a country that was booming and hungry for growth! Despite being bitten by the entrepreneurial spirit, Ahmed secured a solid job at Tawam Hospital in home care administration. This provided security along with a comfortable salary and from here, the young man spring boarded into one of his first successful ventures in the booming mobile phone industry. The recipe was simple; eliminate any and every type of costly overhead by becoming a middleman and brokering mobile phone acquisitions between suppliers and retailers. After taking an initial risk on some smaller deals, he grew the business into a major concern and in the space of a couple of years, established offices throughout the GCC that provided a handsome stream of revenue. Now, if you think this is pretty impressive so far, it is important to keep in mind that through all of this, our young entrepreneur was still honouring his responsibilities at Tawam hospital as well as pursuing an MBA that he managed to finish in 2010. And just when you thought the roster should have been full for any mortal business man, Ahmed was dabbling in yet another opportune venture. This time, fortune struck closer to an industry he was both experienced and knowledgeable in – health care. A few years back, the face of medical insurance changed dramatically in the UAE, allowing UAE Nationals to seek treatment at an institution of their choosing, instead of being limited by the insurers to a select few locations.

By Farid Nouisser

A PORTRAIT OF

There was also an urgent need for insurance covered medical transportation and as it happened, market saturation and fierce monopolized competition, saw his mobile phone business decline. Ahmed wasted no time liquidating most of his amalgamated interests to finance a fleet of specialized vehicles serving the needs of patients throughout the Emirates. His search for a fleet brought him to Jebel Ali in Dubai where, along with a host of new business connections, a whole new entrepreneurial awakening awaited that would prove to be a life changing experience. This hub of movers and shakers was teeming with opportunity and Ahmed was both intrigued by and attracted to the buzz. He reveled in the boundless opportunities and let his “Midas Touch” carry him into a plethora of side ventures that fueled his passion for business. But as is the case with every super hero, there was bound to be an ‘Achilles Heel’. For Ahmed, it was one man trying to take on the affairs of an army that led to an inevitable burn out. Still holding on to the job at Tawam Hospital, running several businesses and pursuing his studies, brewed up a storm that was now exhausted and poised for the calm. Ahmed finally resigned from his position at Tawam, sold his medical transport business, got married and decided to complete a PHD in H.R. from North Texas University. He reorganized his affairs and strengthened his potential for future endeavours by establishing a team that would help him cope moving forward. The result was National Home Care; a thriving business that has become a standard in the industry and Dr. Ahmed blossomed into a highly sought after consultant in the structuring of various similar home care service providers. At the “ripe” age of 32, Dr. Ahmed dedicates his time to motivational lectures and believes firmly that “the universe is fully prepared to conspire in your favour if you want something bad enough and are prepared when opportunity strikes; however, if you sow seeds of fear and negativity, a fallow field will be your harvest.” Best of all, he has graciously agreed to become one of our esteemed contributing writers and we look forward to many more inspirational stories.

ports of ponder

What is 'thinking outside of the box? Everyone has a 'toolbox' of experience, ideas and possible solutions which they use to solve problems. When faced with a problem they go to their store of ideas, which they trust, and take out the 'tools' needed to solve the problem.

1. Firstly, forget the way that you usually solve problems

A way of illustrating this process is by likening this to an automatic bakery. The problem goes in one side, is processed, and comes out resolved on the other side. Thinking outside of the box requires the person to put their old box of ideas to one side and open their mind to find creative solutions.

4. Repeating processes often becomes habitual and inhibits creativity

How to think outside of the box When you want to find a solution that is different and maybe more effective, sometimes it is necessary to look, or think, away from the usual supply of 'tools' or ideas.

2. If it seems that there is no visible solution, look further 3. Remember, it is the quality of the process that counts, not how much you do or how long you do it for

5. Take inspiration from your environment 6. Try to change the time and the place where you usually plan and process your solutions. Go to a different room, drive out of the city, you may find inspirations from new surroundings 7. Learn from children; they are literal thinkers and often get straight to the point because they do not put obstacles in the way

Most important of all, you should look at the goal. What is it that you want to achive? To do this, instead of looking inside the box of ideas, create a new box and fill it with new concepts. Look around for new inspiration. For example, in the cinema, instead of focusing on the hero of the film and how he solves things, look at the villain; he too has his own set of problems to sort out. How does he do things? Failure will often be the force for change; if something goes wrong, the person will try a new way. It is part of human instinct to survive – eat or be eaten. A man can successfully do a task 99 times with no problem but the 100th time can fail. This shows that there will be another way to tackle the problem but the man must search for it. We should sometimes look beyond our beliefs and capabilities. Charles Holland Duell (1850 – 1920) was a commissioner of the USA Patent and Trademark office and is widely quoted to have said, in 1902, that humans had achieved all that could be achieved. In those days people were travelling by horse and cart. Duell is often misquoted; he actually said that the progress of invention [at that time] would appear insignificant when compared with new ideas yet to come. The steps for solving a problem a different way: 1. Pick up the paper 2. Write the problem 3. Write the solution 4. Put that solution aside 5. Write a new solution

Grand Opening Oasis Hospital Their Highnesses Sheikh Tahnoon bin Mohamed, Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed, Sheikh Saif bin Zayed and Sheikh Hazza bin Tahnoon attended the Grand Opening of Oasis Hospital’s new building in Al Ain. Sheikh Saif bin Zayed was born at Oasis and the new building was paid for by a grant from the ruling family. The new facilities will enable Oasis to care for many more complicated pregnancies and births on site. “Not only is the women’s clinic bigger” says CEO Alex Jankuloski, “but we’ve added a neonatologist, a maternal foetal medicine consultant and a paediatric surgeon is on the way”.

O

ther special guests included representatives from the Head Office of Cure International, who oversee the management of Oasis Hospital, and Kathleen and Nancy Kennedy, daughters of American Christians who founded Oasis Hospital, Dr Pat and Dr Mariam Kennedy. Kathleen Kennedy described how her mother was blood type O negative, a type that can give blood to anyone. “Often when a patient came in who was losing blood or needed an operation, they would lie down on one bed and my mother would lie on the one next to them and start giving them her blood”, she said. “And if we had a power cut, I would hold the lantern while my father did the operation”. Oasis Hospital was launched in 1960, before the oil wealth of the UAE was discovered so the staff offered much of the care for free – in clinics built from mud bricks and palm fronds. Oasis continue to be committed to showing love to people who are in need, and at the launch announced that this month a medical team of volunteers from Oasis Hospital will visit Yemen and Lebanon to provide medical aid to war refugees. The trips will take place in partnership with the UAE Government, through the Khalifa Humanitarian Foundation. Surgeons and Doctors from Oasis have volunteered to donate their time in order to provide care for people who we know are greatly in need and have no access to healthcare. Earlier this month Trey Hulsey, President of Oasis, visited both locations to assess ways in which hospital volunteers can meet the needs of these displaced people. He was joined in Yemen by Alex Jankuloski, CEO of Oasis, and in Lebanon by medical staff from the hospital. “It is important to us that we participate with the UAE in the work they are doing in the region in trying to bring peace, stability and tolerance to places that are less fortunate than

20

the UAE,” says Trey. In Lebanon, the team from Oasis will work with a local hospital so that our doctors can provide surgeries for Syrian refugees in the Al Zahla camp and other areas around Beirut. The aim is to return to Yemen and Lebanon approximately every 8 weeks, with surgeons of different medical specialties in

order to serve a variety of needs. “We recognise how important Yemen is to the people of the UAE and we know that healthcare is one of the ways we can help Yemen be a safe, secure and prosperous place”, Trey explains. Oasis would like to express particular thanks to the UAE Ambassador to Lebanon, Hamad Saeed Al Shamsi for his help with this work. The first trip will be to Lebanon and is expected to take place in early December. Oasis Hospital invites surgeons from any hospital that would like to donate their time to this cause to contact Trey Hulsey, President of Oasis Hospital. Any surgical specialities are welcomed that will help the team heal as many Syrian refugees and Yemeni children as possible.

HELP I

is Hopefully On the Way for New Mothers

I recently read an article in The National UAE Newspaper about a conference soliciting more support for new mothers in the UAE. The interviewees spoke of gaps in communication between mothers and healthcare providers as well as a lack of support groups for different postnatal needs. After reading the piece, I felt as though the women in the article had somehow infiltrated my thoughts or perhaps eavesdropped on some of my conversations. The reassuring fact of the matter is that their personal tales are not very different from my own.

am one week away from delivering via cesarean - my fourth child in the UAE. I can honestly say that while I feel a bit more prepared than I did with my first, I am still nervous about the surgery and anxious about both my physical and mental post delivery health. I’m not sure if a woman can ever, necessarily, get used to having babies; with each birth, our bodies age and are in some ways changed. Therefore, support is every bit as important with your third child as it was with your first. This is especially true for expat parents who are miles away from their traditional families and friends.

Having, personally, struggled a great deal with recreating and reliving postnatal normalcy, I am a witness to some of the shortcomings of the present support systems, not to mention, having to adjust to being a parent to an additional child whilst expected to return to work functioning normally after a mere 60 days of maternal leave! There is absolutely nothing routine or normal about having a newborn, and expecting a mother to rejoin society/routines after such a brief period of time, while everything around her has tilted and changed is both unrealistic and unhealthy. Imagine doing this alone or with very little support from societal systems. I battled, horribly, with post-partum depression after my third child. For seven months I went to routine doctor’s visits and kept up, best as I could, with work obligations while I continually fell apart. I reached out to more

22

The Source

than one doctor and no one was able to help me. While going for routine check-ups with this pregnancy, I mentioned my past struggles to a doctor and she dismissed my concerns for reoccurrences. I have since found a new doctor but the entire process has been both exhausting and lonely. Every mother’s story is different. What unifies us, is knowing that having a child is one of, if not the biggest change that we will ever succumb to physically, emotionally, and mentally. We, for sure, need all of the support that we can get. I applaud the UAE for initiatives that will assist new mothers more effectively and I hope that future mothers in the country feel more supported and educated in regards to adjustments, expectations, and simple day to day living. SEVEN JEWELS OF THE

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

2

ABU DHABI ABU DHABI Abu Dhabi means “Father of Dhabi”. Dhabi is a type of Gazelle so basically it’s the father of gazelle named by the early hunters of the Bani Yas tribe who discovered the island when tracking a gazelle and found a rare and precious freshwater spring. Al Hosn Fort is now built on the site of this spring. Abu Dhabi is the Federal capital and also the largest of the seven emirates covering more than 85 per cent of land that constitutes the UAE. Its long coastline extends for more than 400 kilo meters and was once the world's best waters for pearling and fishing. In 1958, oil was first discovered here in commercial quantities. It holds more than 80 per cent of the UAE’s oil reserves and 11 per cent of the world’s reserve. This makes it by far the richest and most politically important Emirate of the UAE's seven Emirates.

DUBAI DUBAI Who doesn't already know Dubai by now is probably not living on Earth!! Don't you agree? Dubai is the second largest Emirate in the United Arab Emirates. Under the guidance of Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, it has forged a reputation as one of the most important and vibrant cities in the Middle East. It is here, where the tallest, the biggest, the largest and the unknown future is all revealed in this great city.

SHARJAH SHARJAH The third largest of the seven Emirates, Sharjah is situated between Dubai and Ajman. Once part of a single emirate with Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah is ruled by the Al Qasimi family. The Emirate of Sharjah is known for its beautiful and impressive architectural buildings, mosques, museums and distinctive souqs. The lovely Corniche, beautiful gardens and rich cultural heritage, adds charm to the bustling city. Here you will get to see attractive landmarks such as the resplendent King Faisal Mosque and the Pearl Monument, a symbol of UAE federation. Dubai-Sharjah drive is just about fifteen minutes when traffic-free. Sharjah also renders easy access to Ajman, Fujairah and the other emirates. Under the guidance of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Sharjah has earned the title of the cultural capital of the UAE. The Emirate has some of the most interesting architecture in the country, an archeological museum, numerous examples of traditional watchtowers, and a natural history museum and souks that rival any in the region. It is a good place to purchase carpets from Iran, Pakistan and Afganistan.

The headquarters for the Authors' and Writers' Union in the UAE are located in this Emirate, which has over a hundred publications to its credit and home to one of the best book fairs in the UAE.

cover story

AJMAN AJMAN Ajman is the smallest Emirate of the UAE and lies between Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain. The central area of Ajman is agog with activity, while the outskirts has many farms. Ajman has a few good fast food restaurants, a City Centre (shopping mall), a cinema, and a traditional Islamic designed souq.

5 UMM AL QUWAIN UMM AL QUWAIN Umm Al Quwain is a happy destination for fun-lovers who wish to go sailing and bird watching. It is famous for its Multi-million dirham aqua park, which attracts thousands of visitors. History prevails as Umm Al Quwain’s archaeological site and ancient fortified settlement of 2,500 BC. The Emirate is also famous for the Falaj Al Mu'ala -natural oasis and important agricultural site.

RAS AL KHAIMAH RAS AL KHAIMAH Ras Al Khaimah, meaning 'head of the tent' is said to represent Bedouin shelter symbolizing traditional Arabian hospitality. The Emirate, enveloped by the sea, desert and mountains unveils the rugged as well as serene facets of natural beauty. It is known for its pleasant camping and trekking sites. Close to the foot of the mountains, are natural water springs with secluded bathing facilities. It is a beautiful place to laze around and enjoy a relaxed holiday. RAK was once, also the centre of the naval strength of the southern Gulf states. Clashes with the British Navy led to its downfall in 1820, along with the subsequent arrival of British presence upon the local scene.

6

Ras Al Khaimah officially became part of the UAE Federation on October 10, 1972, a year after the Federation was formed.

7 FUJAIRAH FUJAIRAH Fujairah is the land of calm and charm. It is the only emirate that lies on the eastern side of the UAE, along the Gulf of Oman, while the others are along the Arabian Gulf. The scenic mountains and winding roads make the trip enjoyable. Cascading waterfalls and pristine beaches are a major attraction to tourists as well as UAE residents, who often escape to spend a peaceful weekend there. Beach divers love to explore the marine wealth of the coastal areas. The Friday market offers a rustic shopping experience. Fujairah has a rich and lengthy history of settlement, stretching back thousands of years. It was known in the old ages as the land of the sea giants, and was the first home for immigrants known as the Phoenicians, who came from the southeast of the Arabian peninsula. 25

INAUGURAL STUDENTS’ KARTING CUP TO PROVIDE GRASSROOTS PLATFORM FOR UAE’S NEXT GENERATION OF KARTING HEROES Abu Dhabi Racing Supports Cup with Daman Speed Academy Trial for Top Emiratis Al Ain - Abu Dhabi, UAE. Tuesday 18h November: The inaugural Students’ Karting Cup - a new grassroots series targeted at boosting domestic interest in the sport of karting - will take place over four weekends in January and February next year. With registration now open to UAE-based students of all nationalities between the ages of 12 to 19-years-old, the multi-round Students’ Karting Cup will feature two competitions categories: Junior for 12 to 15-year-olds and Senior for 16 to 19-yearolds. The brainchild of PRODRIVE Sports Services, one of the UAE's leading independent organisers of individual and corporate sporting events, the Students Karting Cup will take place at Al Ain Raceway - the Middle East’s only International Karting Commission (CIK) accredited International Grade B circuit. “This first-of-its-kind karting competition will galvanise an already popular sport in the UAE and, we hope, contribute to propelling the evolution of regional motorsports,” said Sayed Harris Hassan, CEO, PRODRIVE. “The UAE is now home to an increasingly diverse calendar of world-class motorsport events and we want to see homegrown talents fighting it out on the international stage – both domestically and internationally. The Students’ Karting Cup has been conceived to introduce the UAE's next generation of sporting talent into competitive karting - the traditional entry-point for the majority of professional motorsport drivers.” In contrast to other regional karting programmes, the Students’ Karting Cup

aims to develop all aspects of young drivers’ capabilities - from punctuality and adherence to safety, to natural speed and attention to rules and regulations on the circuit. “Contrary to popular belief, racing is not just about speed,” added Sayed. “Drivers need more in their lockers than raw pace alone. The Students’ Karting Cup will assess young drivers, identify who has the rounded talents required for modern day racing and then nurture the best prospects.” Supported by Abu Dhabi Racing (ADR), the Abu Dhabi-based company that develops initiatives to boost the emirate’s presence in global motorsport, the Students’ Karting Cup will also offer a coveted trial with ADR’s prestigious Daman Speed Academy - which aims to groom young UAE nationals to become professional racing drivers – to the top-ranking Emirati drivers in the Junior and Senior categories. “Karting is the starting point for virtually every world-class racing driver competing today – it is the heartbeat of motorsport,” said Khaled Al Qubaisi, ADR’s Managing Director and the first Emirati to finish the famous 24 hours race at historic French circuit, Le Mans. “Karting is a breeding ground for talent. The sport hones young drivers’ skills and provides them with invaluable racing experience. It is also a crucial platform for physical and emotional development. Karting is where drivers develop and grow into their adult bodies and discover the competitive edge as they learn what it takes to be successful, victorious and how to be a team player.” Registration for the Students’ Karting Cup costs AED1,150 per individual driver and is open until Tuesday 15th December.

For their entry fees, students will receive a Starter Kit worth AED900 that includes branded Students’ Karting Cup clothing and 60-minutes of assured track time. The track time includes two 15-minute ‘Arrive and Drive’ sessions and an ‘Open Day’ pass for an unlimited number of sessions – available on a first-come, first-served basis – that can be redeemed at Al Ain Raceway any time between December 16 to January 14. On Friday 15 January, all drivers will convene at Al Ain Raceway for a 30-minute assessment where qualified instructors from the circuit and PRODRIVE will evaluate their abilities and responses to aspects such as safety, punctuality, speed and the attention paid to rules and regulations. Following the assessment day, the expected 200-250 driver field will be trimmed to a final lineup of 100-125, who will contest three race weekends on Friday 5, 19 and 26 February. To find out more about the Students’ Karting Cup visit www.skcae.com or follow the series on Facebook at Facebook.com/skcae

Sayed Harris Hassan and two entrants in the Students’ Karting Cup formally launch the series at Al Ain Raceway.

UNHCR launches winter campaign to protect refugees from harsh winter across the

making a difference

BEIRUT, Lebanon, 18 November 215 (UNHCR) –The UN Refugee Agency on 18 November2015 launched a regional winter campaign to protect the most vulnerable refugee families in Lebanon and other neighboring countries from a possible repeat of last year’s winter storms.

T

hrough its online donation platform - http://leben.unhcr.org UNHCR aims to team up with individuals in the region who are able to contribute to its winter programme and make a difference in refugees’ lives.

“Our goal is to bring the public in the region closer to the people affected, by offering individuals a simple way to reach out to and support persons in need and make sure that they stay warm this winter," said UNHCR’s Director of the Bureau for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Refugee Coordinator for the Syria and Iraq situations Amin Awad, “we count on the strong support of every person who is able to help to make this goal a reality.” UNHCR winter preparations are in full swing to help some 15 million displaced people survive the coming winter across the Middle East, in countries such as Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq and Syria where several villages and towns experience repeated waves of snowfall, heavy rain, and strong winds. Lebanon hosts over one million Syrian refugees; more than half of them live in garages, abandoned buildings, and makeshift tented settlements. Last winter hit early in November and continued until late March, with several villages experiencing waves of snowfall, strong winds and heavy rain making access difficult, especially in locations above 1,600 metres. At a time when the vulnerabilities of Syrian refugees in Lebanon have increased by 100 per cent in some areas, UNHCR and partners estimate that 195,000 Syrian families (975,000 people) will suffer from winter and will need assistance to keep warm and dry. Impoverished Lebanese communities are also suffering. UNHCR has doubled the number of people receiving support for winter in Lebanon this year because of this increased vulnerability among the refugee population. We are giving four consecutive months of winter grants to more than 161,000 families (800,000 people) starting in November. This will allow refugees to stagger purchases such as fuel for heating. UNHCR will also provide assistance during the four winter months to vulnerable Lebanese families identified by the Ministry of Social Affairs under the National Poverty Targeting Program. UNHCR and partners are distributing aid to 100,000 Lebanese and Syrian families (500,000 people), such as weather proofing kits, insulation kits, stoves, heavy blankets, winter clothes, and fuel for schools to help them survive winter. Remarking on UNHCR’s winter programmes, UNHCR’s Representative in Lebanon Mireille Girard said:

Our number one priority is to ensure that the “most vulnerable families across Lebanon are well

equipped to weather the heavy storms,” she added, “but as the crisis digs deeper into its fifth year, the reality is that there remains a widening gap between humanitarian needs and available funding. We need all the support we can get ”

entertainment Rebel Wilson Knows The Trailer For Her New Movie Is More Important Than One Direction The trailer for Rebel Wilson's new movie is here and she wants everyone, including One Direction, to know about it. Rise of the Tomb Raider is outstanding, but it’s hamstrung by the Xbox One

After the release of the well-regarded Tomb Raider reboot back in 2013, expectations were raised substantially for Crystal Dynamics’s next installment in this beloved actionadventure franchise. Fortunately, the game meets or exceeds those expectations in nearly every way. However, since the game is a timed exclusive for the Xbox One and Xbox 360, it’s no surprise that the performance is hampered by the limited hardware upon release. By Grant Brunner

Thank You Al Ain La Brioche would like to seize an opportunity to thank all of our valuable customers in Al Ain. We are truly humbled and grateful for the abundant support, along with the consistent and overwhelming confidence this city has had in our services over the years. It has always been an absolute pleasure to serve you and your families. In response to your loyalty, La Brioche would like to present Al Ain with a sweet token of our love and appreciation. We are delighted to bring, exclusively to The Garden City, our very own Sacher-Cake reinvented by the talented La Brioche French Chef, Franck Chocian. The Sacher Torte, a chocolate delicacy and a masterpiece of Austrian cuisine, is probably

the most famous cake of all time. In 1832, Prince Metternich asked his court kitchen to create a special dessert for a reception. Due to the chef’s illness, the task of creating a suitable “tour de force “fell upon the 16-yearold apprentice, Franz Sachert; and thus the Original Sacher-Torte, now famous the world over, was born. The result was a refined, elegant chocolate cake, thinly coated by hand with best-quality apricot jam and a crowning glory of delectable chocolate icing. The original recipe remains a well-kept secret and today, every coffee house in Vienna has its own Sacher-Torte with no two quite alike, but all exceptional and living up to the scrumptious legacy! Merci Al Ain et Bon Appetite!

RAS AL KHAIMAH

The perfect antidote to city life AT first sight, Ras al Khaimah in the UAE, is a rocky, earthy moonscape, parched and unforgiving. Scrape the surface and you’ll find fertile plains, natural springs and white beaches. You’ll find mangroves and rolling deserts. You’ll find one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on the planet. The name Ras al Khaimah means ‘top of the tent’ possibly referring to the shape of the emirate, the rocky mountains or the outline of the peninsula. The remains of 18 fortresses, castles and towers are scattered around the emirate, giving a historic nod to its turbulent history, a land that has held a strategic geographic position. The western boundary of the emirate reaches the Persian Gulf, and the eastern edge follows Fujairah’s border and a rocky spine – the Al Hajjar mountains. This impressive range runs for more than 500 kilometres from the Omani tip of Musandam, through the UAE to the most easterly point of Oman near the fishing village of Sur. This is an ancient land, and wandering through the wadis (Arabic for valleys) you almost feel as if every stone you turn could reveal more secrets of the past.

W

ith a sports utility vehicle, it is possible to explore the wadis and tracks, passing small villages and hamlets that cling to the valley sides, preserving traditional ways of life. However, even in the most remote areas, there are telegraph poles and electricity wires. The area is popular with walkers, mountain bikers and families looking for a night camping under the stars. The calm weather in the low-lying lands is not indicative of the changing weather on top of the mountains though. Flash floods are not unknown and weather reports and warnings need to be adhered to. Find a guide if you want to do any serious walking. The Stairway to Heaven is a great climb, but not for the faint hearted, with rickety steps and rocky shelves that wind up the mountain’s face. The views are wonderful, but some of the drops are more than 300 metres. The route was created by Bedouins to give access from Wadi Galilah, in Ras al Khaimah, to the mountain-top villages in Oman. If you’re not an adrenalin junky, the natural thermal waters at Khatt Springs, on the mountain edge of the Ras al Khaimah/Fujaiah border, might be more in order. The mineral water, rumoured to have therapeutic properties, can reach temperatures of about 40°C.

my world luxury hotel chains are starting to anchor themselves on the coastline. As well as having the modern facilities to attract tourists with deeper pockets, the location of Ras al Khaimah offers great day trips for people looking to explore the top edges of the Arabian Peninsula. The road follows the coast all the way to Khasab, a small town in the Musandam Omani enclave. If you look at a map, the fingers of land seem to reach out into the sea forming fjords, and it’s this geographical development that helped the region to harness its reputation as the ‘Norway of Arabia’. Tiny islands and rocky outcrops are home to an array of sea birds, while the warm blue waters attract colourful fish and dolphins. At Khasab you can hire a dhow to take you out for the day, stopping to watch the dolphins or take a swim. One pit stop is Telegraph Island. Just a mile off the mainland, this tiny rock in the Elphinstone Inlet, in the Straits of Hormuz, was home to a British telephonic repeater station in the nineteenth century, to relay messages along the submarine cable in the Persian Gulf. It formed part of the London to Karachi cable. This was a lonely posting for the British officer unlucky enough to be stationed here. Some think that the expression “going round the bend” refers to being posted here; a reference to the loneliness and heat that had to be endured on an isolated rock just around the bend in the coastline.

There couldn’t be a greater contrast when the rural There is a road, known as the Wadi Bih road that passes secrets of Ras al Khaimah are juxtaposed with the shiny over the top of the mountains into Oman, but there is skyscrapers and glass obelisks of Dubai. Ras al Khaimah only a security post without border facilities. The road is is not without its luxury resorts, malls and water parks, shut to foreigners and tourists. but without the high-rise intensity of its neighbour, it is The emirate is also blessed with beautiful beaches, and an antidote to hectic modern life.
