TOO MUCH TAKE So much waste But not enough to eat Plenty of oil but you’d better dig deep Too much take And not enough give Will anything ever change?

This is a little tune I wrote a few years back and as expected, nothing much from a global and political perspective has changed. I believe I can safely say that things have deteriorated and as such, the message applies as fiercely as ever.

Drink my water; fill your cup There’s more than you’ll ever need Grace my table; share this land No one has to bleed! Does anybody hear us when we scream really loud? Above the carnage, above the crowd Is anyone listening, anyone proud? When dreams befall a mushroom cloud Will we ever find a way to love without a gun? To carry each other, embrace one another Together under the sun Drink my water; fill your cup There’s more than you’ll ever need Grace my table; share this land No one has to bleed

Wars are still raging and to add insult to injury, we even have Donald Trump, who I believe is at worst, a bit of added comic relief. We really have to stop giving this incredibly sad and needy billionaire the attention he so desperately craves and shift our focus to the much bigger fish in need of frying - he is clearly unworthy! Regardless of race or religion and whether or not this particular Holiday Season is observed, Santa might be listening and just in case, we would all be well advised to add the following to our wish list: Peace on Earth and Good Will towards all Men - it’s as simple as that! Let’s face it, I’m a bit of a dreamer and in reality, inheriting Donald Trump’s fortune would be easier attained, but I will never give up hope for mankind – not as long as I belong to the species!

Dubai: More than 52,000 drivers were fined in Dubai between January and November 2015 for tailgating which was blamed for hundreds of accidents, Dubai Police said. Tailgating is among the two most common causes of serious accidents, claiming 37 lives in Dubai since early 2014. Between January and September, the police recorded 435 accidents caused by tailgating, leading to 25 fatalities in the first nine months of this year, the highest among all causes of accidents in that period. The practice is rampant on UAE highways, with aggressive motorists driving at high speed while flashing headlights to push cars out of the fast lane. In 2014, Dubai Traffic Police issued 69,964 fines to people for not leaving a safe distance between vehicles on Dubai roads. Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of Dubai Traffic Police, said that tailgating is one of the top three reasons for accidents on Dubai roads... Source: Gulf News

In the build up to COP21, religious leaders have come out in support of action on climate change. Of course, not every religion shares the faith. ne early autumn evening in Melbourne, when the chill was still novel enough to brave a backyard barbecue, my associates assembled for a bender. It was a troubled, not-altogether hygienic bunch who rallied their inner beasts for revelry that Saturday.

The partying progressed along productive lines until Toddy the dog-breeder took offence at something somebody said. A tad touchy was Toddy. Dog breeding is a crooked game and, knowing that, players tend to be wound tight. The offendee dealt out a hammer-blow that crumpled the offender like an aluminium can. Immediately, a roughhead firebrand leapt to the can’s defence, barbarian eyes burning wild and wasted. Toddy flipped the pretender head over tail, then drove knee into midriff with a sound like a puncturing tire. Then the men stepped in. One produced a length of two-byfour and swatted Toddy to the skull. It would have knocked me cold, but Toddy merely dipped a little and sprang back into place like a button. She turned on her assailant, tore the weapon from his hand and walloped him with it, sending him reeling, hands pinned to a broken nose. I can’t recall exactly what happened next, only that it lacked dignity, but we ended up bruised, bloodied and bunkered inside, cowering with cops on the way. As her boyfriend tried to calm her down, talking through the bleeding, Toddy prowled the backyard like a Doberman. Perhaps it sweetly illustrates the caliber of the people I was among that some wag, disgruntled at the turn his evening had taken, ripped open the door and bellowed into the wilderness, “Party pooper!” And thus, just as a length of two-be-four connected with

Toddy’s skull, we connect with the theme of this article: No matter how hot the party, some people just have to pour cold water on it. In September 2015 Pope Francis addressed the UN, cautioning against the “selfish and boundless thirst for power and material prosperity.” He warned that man “can only survive and develop if the ecological environment is favorable. Any harm done to the environment, therefore, is harm done to humanity.” Thank God for Pope Francis. He’s one of those stalwart optimists all good parties need - the charismatic chat-smith entrenched next the heater, radiating good cheer even while the barrels run dry. And thank God for the Dalai Lama, too. He and other Buddhist leaders have signed a statement urging the use of wisdom and compassion in reaching agreement at COP21. What an elevating presence he is, bringing to mind one of those impish pranksters who buzz about shoving firecrackers into peoples’ pockets. Sister Chan Khong, another eminent Buddhist, says, “We must take action, not out of a sense of duty but out of love for our planet and for each other.” Leaders of the evangelical movement, also, have made clear their views. John MacArthur of Grace Community Mega-Church in LA says, “The environmental movement is consumed with trying to preserve the planet forever. But we know that isn’t in God’s plan…I’ve told environmentalists that if they think humanity is wrecking the planet, wait until they see what Jesus does to it.” Don’t rely on him to bring the melon balls, then. On the bright side, if the nut-jobs are the only ones resisting action on climate change, clearly there is hope. As more and more leaders of wisdom and compassion come to the party, it seems more and more likely COP21 will succeed.

Parents of successful kids have these things in

common:

By: Drake Baer and Rachel Gillett

family

Good parents want their kids to stay out of trouble, do well in school, and go on to do awesome things as adults. And while there isn't a set recipe for raising successful children, psychology research has pointed to a handful of factors that predict success. Unsurprisingly, much of it comes down to the parents. Here's what parents of successful kids have in common: They make their kids do chores "If kids aren't doing the dishes, it means someone else is doing that for them," Julie Lythcott-Haims, former dean of freshmen at Stanford University and author of "How to Raise an Adult" said during a TED Talks Live event. They teach their kids social skills. Researchers from Pennsylvania State University and Duke University tracked more than 700 children from across the US between kindergarten and age 25 and found a significant correlation between their social skills as kindergartners and their success as adults two decades later. They have high expectations. Parents who see college in their child's future seem to manage their child toward that goal irrespective of their income and other assets; kids often live up to their parents expectations!

They have healthy relationships with each other. Children in high-conflict families, whether intact or divorced, tend to fare worse than children of parents that get along. They've attained higher educational levels. A2014 study lead by University of Michigan psychologist Sandra Tang found that parents who finished high school or college were more likely to raise kids that did the same. They teach their kids math early on. A 2007 meta-analysis of 35,000 preschoolers across the US, Canada, and England found that developing math skills early can turn into a huge advantage. They develop a relationship with their kids. A 2014 study of 243 people born into poverty found that children who received "sensitive care giving" in their first three years not only did better in academic tests in childhood but also had healthier relationships and greater academic attainment in their 30s.

8 9

They're less stressed. Research shows that if your friend is happy, that brightness will infect you; if she's sad, that gloominess will transfer as well. So if a parent is exhausted or frustrated, that emotional state could transfer to the kids. The moms work. According to research out of Harvard Business School, there are significant benefits for children growing up with mothers who work outside the home. The study found daughters of working mothers went to school longer were more likely to have a job in a supervisory role and earned more money - 23% more compared to peers raised by stay-at-home mothers. They have a higher socioeconomic status. Tragically, one-fifth of American children grow up in poverty, a situation that severely limits their potential.

10

As "Drive" author Dan Pink has noted, the higher the income for the parents, the higher the SAT scores for the kids.

happy about,” Brian explains. “The journey begins by discussing in detail the client’s vision. We then come back with a proposed solution. After the Design phase comes Acoustic Improvement, Integration, Wiring, Sound Processing, Installation and Tuning - all done with complete precision, allowing us to satisfy and even exceed the client’s expectations,” he adds. Part of this meticulous procedure is a whole series of testing and configuration, where microphones are placed in the car to measure the best sound quality possible, relative to the position of the driver and the passengers. The car is then tested in extreme temperature conditions to ensure the most optimal audio outputting all driving environments. Today, Brian’s Custom Audio extends its luxury services to the UAE. Among the company’s first clients in the country are members of the Ferrari Owners’ Club. Three Ferrari 458 Spiders and one FF have recently been shipped from here to the Netherlands to undergo the unique creative process that Brian and his team have to offer. NATIONAL DAY 2015 CELEBRATIONS AT

By: Urhum Habib

BRIGHTON COLLEGE, AL AIN Sensational, celebrate, culture, pride, achievement and success are just a few of the initial things that come to mind on National Day in the UAE. It is a time of celebration and festive transformation with cars wrapped in the colours of the flag and the twinkling of thousands of lights adorning the streets and buildings in a patriotic tribute to their nation. Anticipation and jubilation are big on the menu as locals and expats alike share a sense of community and camaraderie that annually embraces the “Spirit of The Union” theme.

B

righton College was no exception on the 26th of November and as the sun was returning from its long journey around the earth, perched just above Jebel Hafeet, a dedicated and skilled team of staff and students, led by the very capable Mr. J. Graham, began final preparations for what was to be another milestone National Day celebration at Brighton College, Al Ain.

ensuring that the day was chalked full of all things UAE and as one gazed out over a colourful sea of red, white, green and black, a reassuring sense of accomplishment screamed “a job well done”!

Students, friends and families arrived in droves and a once calm campus was magically transformed into a euphoric and colourful circus. Visitors were entertained throughout the day by both junior and senior school musical and dance performances. There was a police dog show, an array of classic cars on display, horseback riding and naturally, an impressive falconry exhibit that added a true Emirati flavour to the line-up of events. Local artists and exhibitors from the surrounding community flaunted their wares along with a scrumptious assortment of traditional dishes and pastries for all to enjoy.

made by states to attain success and excellence in the field of investment in human capital, including women. An educated human, man or woman, is the basis of civilisation and the axis of advancement and progress.”

The National Day Committee pulled out all the stops

An enormous THANK YOU goes out to all that helped make UAE National Day 2015 at BCAA another smashing success!

How do you prepare raw food? Soaking and Sprouting: Raw beans, legumes, nuts, and seeds contain enzyme inhibitors that are normally destroyed with cooking. The nutrients can be released by soaking them (germination) or sprouting them. This means soaking them for a certain amount of time. You can rinse beans, nuts, legumes, or seeds and place in a glass container. Add room temperature purified water to cover and soak at room temperature overnight. Rinse a couple of times prior to use. Sprouting: After germination, seeds, beans, and legumes can be sprouted. After they are drained during the final step of the germination process, place them in a container for sprouting. Leave them at room temperature for the correct amount of time. The seed, bean, or legume will open and a sprout will grow from it. Rinse the sprouted nuts or seeds and drain well. They can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Blending: Foods can be blended or chopped using a food processor or blender, to make recipes for smoothies, pesto, soup, hummus. Some benefits of the diet: •

Weight loss and better health: many raw foods are low in in calories, fat, and sodium, and high in fiber. People on this diet observe an increase in energy levels, clearer skin, and improved digestion.

Better nutritional value: Most of the diet’s staples are in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytochemicals. Cooking can decrease vitamins B and C. Also, eating lots of veggies and fruits is good for you.

This diet needs a lot of motivation and commitment. It can be hard to maintain and eating out can be tricky. However, cooking does have its advantages. It can boost nutrients such as betacarotene and lycopene. It also kills bacteria, which helps you avoid food poisoning. Due to the risk of food poisoning and toxicity, a raw foods diet isn't recommended for pregnant women, young children, seniors, people with weak immune systems, and those with chronic medical conditions like kidney disease. Always consult your healthcare provider before you start any new diet regimen and think it through.

BECAUSE SOMETIMES BEING THE MEANEST MOM MIGHT ALSO MAKE YOU MOTHER OF THE YEAR I love my kids and my kids love me. But they have tried to manipulate situations, move my resistance, maneuver their way around the truth and mistake my compassion for weakness. Motherhood is not for wimps! When my kids think I’m at my meanest, they are really seeing my fierce love for them. They just don’t recognize it for that. When I was 16 years old, I misjudged the time and realized I was going to miss my curfew. This was long before cell phones and so I did what any other new driver would do, I sped. Just as the policeman was pulling me over a few blocks from home, my parents showed up. I’ll never forget their words, “We will take it from here, Officer.” They didn’t think twice about marching my butt home and if there had been a TV camera, they probably would have waved. I was never late again. Life teaches hard lessons. And if we let our kids learn them, they might just learn from them. Sure, we can protect our kids from consequences, but should we? They might just miss the lesson if we rush to make everything okay. Maybe they will think twice before they make the same mistake again. I go toe-to-toe regularly with my kids. And it’s not because I like a good fight. It’s because of love. These are some of the non-negotiables in our house that earn me the Mean Mom title. They are of course, sandwiched in loved, bathed in grace and taught consistently (most of the time): 1. Lose it or break it and it’s lost or broken. (We might help you with it, but if you expect it, we definitely won’t). 2. Our family goes to church. You will go, too. 3. People who live in our house, do chores. 4. We apologize when we hurt people. 5. Your email, pictures and Internet history will be looked at by your parents. (Remember we agreed to this when you received access?) 6. If you don’t take care of your stuff, you can’t borrow mine. 7. If you want something, save your money. 8. Sometimes you have to fail at something to later succeed at it. (This is why I quit reminding my kids to do their homework, 22

The Source

check on that missing paper, turn in that extra credit, etc) 9. Eventually, you will run out of clean clothes if you don’t do your laundry. 10. If I go out of my way to help you and you’re rude, the next time you ask for my help, I will say no. 11. We will always forgive each other, no matter what. Love conquers all of the above. Does this list make me a mean mom? Probably. Life has a funny way of teaching the best lessons–if we let it. Sometimes the very best lessons are in the consequences. I hope one day my kids will look beyond the words and rules, and they will understand the deep, abiding love for them that sometimes makes me seem mean. I know I did. And who knows, they may even see a glimpse of Mother of the Year.

A

ZRAQ REFUGEE CAMP, Jordan, Nov 30 (UNHCR) – A planned solar farm is set to transform the lives of thousands of displaced Syrians living in Jordan's barren northern desert, thanks to donations from IKEA's Brighter Lives for Refugees campaign.

The campaign was launched in 2014, and in its first two phases has already raised 18.5 million euros for refugees in parts of Africa, Asia and the Middle East. In its third phase, for every LED lighting product sold in IKEA stores and online between November 29 and December 19, the IKEA Foundation will donate one euro to help UNHCR provide refugees around the world with renewable energy and lighting. In Jordan's remote Azraq refugee camp, proceeds from the campaign will fund the construction of a solar farm that will meet the energy needs of 27,000 Syrian refugees currently living there after fleeing the conflict in their homeland. Since Azraq first opened in April last year, residents have consistently cited the lack of electricity as one the biggest challenges they face in their daily lives. The absence of power and adequate lighting mean that everyday activities such as collecting water or going to the toilet can become fraught with danger after dark, especially for women and girls. Mayada, aged 40, came to the camp ten months ago with her husband and three children. Having lived a comfortable life before the conflict in a large house in the Ghouta suburb of Damascus, she said she never imagined having to live without something as basic as electricity. "Nowadays electricity is life, and without it even the most simple things become a struggle," Mayada told visitors from UNHCR. The family lives in a part of the camp with no street lighting, and at night her 12-year-old daughter Riham is too scared to go alone to the communal toilet at the end of the row of shelters where they live, so she regularly has to wake her parents up to accompany her.

During winter it becomes harder to charge the solar powered lanterns that residents rely on to light their shelters by night, plunging homes into darkness and putting an abrupt end to family life when they run out. "You can't visit friends, the kids can't do their homework. By 9 or 10 o'clock most of the camp is in bed," Mayada said. With construction work on the solar farm set to begin within weeks, the aim is to connect shelters to the new electricity grid by March or April next year. As well as transforming life in the camp, the project will bring additional benefits to some of the refugees as well as their Jordanian hosts. As part of the project, 20 refugees from the camp will be trained to operate and maintain the solar farm, providing them with employment and new skills. In addition, the initial 2 megawatt plant will produce US$1.4 million worth of electricity per year, with any excess unused by the camp being fed into the Jordanian national electricity grid free of charge. When the camp closes, the farm itself will be donated to the Jordanian government. "People tell us it will make a huge difference to them just to be able to switch a light on again, making them feel more at home," said UNHCR Energy Adviser Paul Quigley, who is helping to manage the project. "Without the funding provided by the Brighter Lives for Refugees campaign, we wouldn't have been able to put in place such a sustainable, longterm energy solution. With dramatically reduced electricity costs, it will also mean that money we would have spent on providing power to the camp can be used for humanitarian projects," he added. Mayada says that when electricity finally comes to the camp she will no longer have to put on a brave face for the sake of her kids. Asked what she would say to IKEA customers who contribute to the campaign effort, she uses an old Syrian expression of affection. "I wish I could give them all a big kiss between their eyes! It will mean everything to us."

- PRAWNS CROQUETTES - BITTER BALLEN

HOUSES

INGREDIENTS: 1. 1kg plain flour, plus a little extra for dusting 2. 300g cold butter, diced 3. 2 tbsp mixed spice 4. 2 tbsp ground ginger 5. 1 tbsp bicarbonate of soda 6. 450g light soft brown sugar 7. 3 large eggs 8. 225g golden syrup 9. 300g royal icing sugar 10. few ping-pong-size balls of regal icing, wrapped in cling film

the butter into all of the flour until it resembles fine crumbs. Then stir in the spices, bicarb and sugar.) Whisk the eggs with the golden syrup and stir into the flour mixture with a wooden spoon. Using your hands, knead together into a smooth dough. •

METHOD: Put about half the flour in a food processor with the butter and whizz until you can’t see any lumps of butter remaining. Mix the remaining flour, spices and bicarb together with a pinch of salt. Tip both the floury mixtures into your largest mixing bowl and stir in the sugar. (If you don’t have a food processor, rub

Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Roll a quarter of the dough out at a time on a sheet of baking parchment, to the thickness of 2 x £1 coins. Use a small, sharp knife to cut around the house templates - remember that each time you’ll need 2 x A, 2 x B and 2 x C for one house. Remove trimmings and lift the gingerbread, on its parchment, onto baking trays. Re-roll trimmings to cut out all the shapes you need. Bake the gingerbread one tray at a time on a high shelf in the oven for 8-10 mins, until a lovely, rich brown and firm to the touch. As soon as each tray is baked, carefully sit the templates back onto the relevant shapes and trim any edges to neaten (see step 1). Use a cutter to stamp out any windows or cut away any doors

with a small, sharp knife. Let all the biscuits cool completely. •

Sieve the royal icing sugar into a bowl and stir in dribbles of water until you have a stiff icing. Spoon some into a food bag (cover the rest), snip the tiniest bit off the corner and pipe any icing decorations you want onto the gingerbread. Leave to dry.

Arrange the wall biscuits as you are going to assemble them, then pipe icing along the side edges (see step 2) and stick the walls together. Pipe extra icing where the walls join each other on the inside of the house, and support the sides using your icing balls (see step 3). Leave for a few hrs until set.

Once dry, stick on the roofs, as above - you may need to hold the biscuits on firmly for a few mins until the icing starts to set - or shape your icing balls to support the edges of the roof. Set overnight, then use any remaining royal icing to help you decorate your houses with sweets and sprinkles.

How to Have the Perfect

Christmas Day In

LONDON From roaring fires to fresh morning strolls, champagne toasts to spa sessions, here's how to have your best holiday yet in the U.K.'s capital.

Christmas doesn't always mean turkey 'round the table with relatives, and if this year, you're doing it differently, this is a great time to visit London. It's more picturesque than ever with trees in every square, lights on every street, and spectacular shop windows, and there are fewer crowds, too. Many city dwellers hightail it out of town for the holiday, so you practically get it to yourself. Here's how to make the most of it.

Stroll Hampstead Heath Ask any North Londoner what to do on Christmas morning (they typically stay for the holidays), and they'll tell you they go for a brisk stroll across Hampstead Heath. The air is always crisp, there's often a coating of frost on the grass, and the views across the city are stunning. Join the rest of the neighborhood for a little light exercise before the rest of the day's indulgence, not forgetting to do the very British thing of wishing Merry Christmas to all passers-by. Go for Afternoon Tea For something quintessentially British, how about taking tea against the backdrop of Buckingham Palace? Indulge in the Snow Queen afternoon tea at Conrad London St. James, a festive treat inspired by the enchanting Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. Sweets include the Magic Mirror salted butter shortbread, glitter-dusted meringues, and blackcurrant and cardamom cakes, all accompanied by G.H.Mumm Champagne (the official champagne supplier to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II).

my world Toast with Champagne One of London's top spots for champagne, Bob Bob Ricard, is open on Christmas Day, and that's reason enough to pop a bottle. The sophisticated Soho club is open 365 days of the year, and on this day, you've got a sound chance of getting a reservation. Get comfy in a booth and 'Press for Champagne' (the on-call buzzer on the wall). If you're in the mood for food, but overdid the turkey at Thanksgiving, Bob Bob Ricard is defiantly serving its regular menu (no Christmas specials here), including chicken and champagne pie, lobster macaroni cheese, and its signature beef wellington. Eat a Non-Traditional Christmas Lunch Chances are you've spent most every holiday of your life eating turkey, so why not do this year's a little differently? Tテ君G, the oriental restaurant 35 floors up at Shangri-La, The Shard, will be serving a three-course Christmas Day lunch menu, with Eastern specials including slow-cooked iberico pork and Dover sole with miso. Those views and those flavors aren't cheap-it's $256 per person with wine pairings-but there's no doubt it will make for a special day. Pretend You're on the Slopes Everyone else going skiing? Worry not. What London lacks in slopes and snowfall, it makes up for with ski resort vibes, so at least you can relate to your friends The Goring, an impeccably British hotel in Belgravia, has transformed its outdoor terrace into the St. Moritz Ski Bar, an alpine joint that oozes with old school glamour. Inspired by vintage photographs of his great-grandfather on the slopes, Jeremy Goring has recreated St. Moritz in the heart of the city, with cozy sheepskins, wooden sled tables, cashmere rugs, lanterns, a perfumed scent of pine, and even waiters in vintage ski jumpers. Chef Shay Cooper has put a Michelin-star spin on Swiss-inspired canapes such as tartiflette, potato rosti, and mustard and Emmental macaroons. Bliss Out in the Spa If you can get a couple of hours away on this day, plan for a little 'you' time at Mandara Spa, which is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the holiday this year. Reap the benefits of a little festive TLC with its Comforting Retreat, a one hour and 20 minute anti-fatigue package that includes an aromatherapyreflexology foot treatment, and an invigorating full body massage. Complimentary mince pies and mulled wine will be served, too.

Go Truly British If you want to go all out, go to The Lanesborough, where Christmas is a classic, luxurious affair. The hotel is sumptuously dressed in festive decorations throughout, and is warm and inviting, thanks to the roaring real fires. Christmas lunch is quite the spectacle; guests can choose between five or seven courses from a menu designed by sister hotel Le Bristol's award-winning Chef Patron Eric Frechon, and executed by The Lanesborough's Florian Favario, all to be enjoyed under a glass sky dome and accompanied by a live pianist.
