A

I stopped making New Year’s resolutions a few years ago to avoid any unnecessary self disappointment and concessions of defeat. This year, my plan is to be completely selfish with my promises and I aim to focus solely on myself. That’s right; all of my effort will be dedicated first and foremost to yours truly, the one and only number 1! It sounds incredibly selfish but before you jump to critical conclusions, hear me out. My plan is to place a great deal of energy on self improvement and this, in and of itself, is an extremely tall order. By remedying any of the long list of shortcomings that deprive me of being the best I can be, I am really providing the greatest gift of all for the people that mean the most to me. Oh how my wife would love waking up to a man that exudes only positive energy, takes the time to go running with her in the wee hours of the morning (this will be a tough one!) and smiles at the daily barrage of white SUV’s that cut him off in traffic. Seriously folks, we are only truly of use to ourselves and those around us when we are whole and content. Emotions overwhelm me each time I stop to think about the disaster that is, has been and seemingly continues to be the epitome of mankind. Clad in shame and surrounded by grief, I continue this journey through life, constantly numbing reality in order to appreciate the bounty I am blessed with each and every waking day.

NABATI Means vegetarian

So if you want to say, I’m a vegetarian, you say: Ana nabati.

Glass Doll A glass doll, created with delicate hands, was sent to be nurtured. Pristine and flawless with gleaming eyes, they fell in love with her. She would sleep on rose petals, all thorns were immaculately removed. She was taught to take her first steps on the soft sands, holding their hands. “Don’t fall on rocks” they would say, “you will get scratched”. She was given books with glossy pages, and she would travel time with them. They adorned her with silk that enhanced her luster. She danced around like a fresh breeze... She had colors shimmering through her. Then it was time for her to be wrapped up in expensive packaging and to be delivered, decked with satin ribbon and bow. She was reminded “Come to us if you ever get scratched, we will mend you”. She asks “Will you be able to mend me if I get shattered father?” She saw her reflection in his eyes - he wouldn’t answer. He forgot to prepare her for the truth… ~Dr. Samira Ahmed

Grave Yard Bonsai Mountain Skulls are a unique take on “Memento mori” art. “Remember that you can die” in latin, this art aims to remind us of our own mortality, so it’s fitting that these handmade trophies are “cast in PVC plastic and…moulded off a real human skull.” Made by Australian company Jack Of The Dust, these 850 gram, 13x16x22cm skulls can be a part of your home for just $399 AUS.

“Jack of the Dust” is an obsolete United States Navy occupational designation. Despite sounding ominous, it was used for the ship’s steward, and “referr[ed] to the dusty atmosphere created by issuing quantities of flour and dried biscuit.” The term is still occasionally used today for a ship’s culinary specialist in charge of the canned goods storeroom.

UAE visit-visa extensions become easier

Visit visa holders not needed to exit the country after the expiry of the visa term, but can extend it by paying Dh570. The UAE has revoked the condition of a onemonth gap for renewing visit visas. People on such visas will no longer need to exit the country to get an extension of their stay here. They can now do it by paying Dh570 and stay for a month more without exiting the country, the authorities have said. Brigadier Dr Rashid Sultan, a spokesperson for the UAE Ministry of Interior, said the ministry was re-implementing the decision No 337 of the year 2004 to enable all those who have visit visas to get an extension. "All companies and visitors should submit applications and transactions before the expiry date of the visa period to avoid violations. The immigration services will be provided at all UAE port of entries and immigration offices," he added. The official said the new rule is applicable for all entry permits. These permits would include transit visas, short-term (one month) and longterm visit (90 days) visas, student visas, visas for medical treatment and residence visas. In the previous visa requirements, visit visa holders needed to exit the country after the expiry of the visa term and had to stay out of the country for at least a month before being able to re-enter on another visit visa. He said that amending of visa status will be done electronically and without complications as part of the new procedure. People do not

need to the leave the UAE, but they can amend their visa status and pay the required fees in order to facilitate the transactions for visitors and residents and to save money and time. Obaid bin Suroor, Deputy Director of General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners' Affairs in Dubai, said that all the decision issued by the Minstry of Interior will be implemented by all immigration departments. A cross section of residents expressed their happiness with the revised rule. Hoyam Kamal said that this decision would save time of many people as they had return to their home country for visa change. "It is good that this decision will give people the chance to change their visa status or extend it from here itself."

UlA Suliman said that she came on a visit visa and she found a job. "I was planning to return home for changing the visa. Now, I don't need to buy a ticket. This will help me save money. I will just pay this fee and change the visit visa into a residence visa." Savio said that the UAE is keen that every one abides by laws and at the same time updates and revises the laws to ensure comfort of the people here and facilitate procedures for visitors and residents. She said that some people used to go to neighbouring countries including Kish Island in Iran and some used to be stranded there if there was a delay in the visa. Those who got a job or want to extend their visa, now only need to pay the fees for changing the visas.

COP it Sweet

A

For a fortnight, COP21 dominated the news-cycle. While the outcome was positive, its ascendancy obscured news that bodes badly for chocolate lovers. s newly-weds we shared a granny flat at the bottom of someone's garden. Obviously, Granny had carked it many moons before. The building was derelict. Nothing worked. The water ran scalding hot and frigid but never in between, and a couple of times a week the fuse box would express its incompatibility with the twentieth century by plunging us into darkness. Before long we found a new place. We went out to celebrate. In our haste, I neglected to switch off a bedside light. Dust, damp and dinosaurian electrics combined to strike a spark that ignited some tissues, which ignited my pillow, which ignited the rest. Dinner was gorgeous. I had steak (well done) and she oysters. Soon signals promised that festivities would continue long into the night - or a couple of minutes of it, at least. As we strolled home hand in hand, the lights and screaming sirens of the fire engines hurtling by belonged to another world. ‘Some poor sucker’s in trouble,’ I said. And we smiled into each other’s eyes, luxuriating in the certainty that no matter how awful life was for others it could hardly get any better for us. At that instant we realized that the lights and the noise and the hellish orange glow were coming from our place. We sprinted home and observed from behind a tape barrier as the flames lay waste to everything we had, chastened. And so, just as fire fractured the illusion of our inviolability, we illuminate the theme of this article: joy in the positive can obscure the negative. Kudos to Paris With praise raining down like pieces of Russian planes, only

the Heartland Institute - whose conference (also held in Paris) coincided with COP21 - would have the gall to brand the landmark deal a bad thing. At long last there was recognition - even from that big stick-inthe-mud keeping the Atlantic and Pacific apart - that coal will die as soon as the economic drivers demand it. Once solar and wind are cheaper, businessmen will seize the opportunity and everyone will dance on its grave. It’s not far in the future. But we shouldn't get carried away. Before the world changes for the good, a lot of bad has to happen. In Ivory Coast, failing rainfall due to global warming is decimating the cocoa crop. Farmers are harvesting smaller beans of lower quality. Limiting the warming to 1.5 C isn’t going to stop it. Cocoa expert Christophe Douca says there is a risk that cocoa production will collapse. Understandably, he, the farmers and the country as a whole are worried. And we should be, too. If climate change has anything to teach us, it’s that we’re in this together. Producers in the $80 billion chocolate economy are already among the most vulnerable people on earth. Typically, cocoa is grown alongside food crops by subsistence farmers. It pays the bills. But that’s it. Many live below the poverty line of $1.25 per day. The pittance paid them is one of the reasons we could afford to decimate boxes of the stuff over Christmas. As we filled our faces, we might have pondered the consequences as 33 percent of the world’s cocoa is lost. The deal in Paris bodes well to recognize that economics will drive the world to sustainable practices, but we should nevertheless prepare ourselves for changes already in motion that might not be easy to swallow.

Not everyone is going to cop it sweet.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY QUALITY TIME

By Shalinimittal

FAMILY

Modern lifestyles have made it increasingly difficult for families to spend time together. There just seems to be so much to do and too many things to take care of, hence most families spend very little time together. However, no matter how busy you are, family time must not be neglected. Creating time for your family is very important because:

1 2

It strengthens the family bond When you have time to get into leisure activities with your family and spend more time together, the family bond is made even stronger. There is really no way you can expect to feel close to your spouse and children if you do not spend any time with them. The activities do not have to be expensive; it can be as simple as playing games at home or a family picnic in the park. Spending time together brings you together and strengthens emotional bonds. It helps members improve each other You will only know each other’s strengths and weaknesses when you spend time together. Parents get to know their children better and can better assist them in areas that need improvement. Family time makes it possible to understand each other better and hence relate better improving each other in the process.

14

The Source

3 4

It improves the academic performance of the children Children who feel loved by their parents have less emotional issues that can affect their academic performance. Their performance is also improved because they have their parents there to guide and offer them any necessary help they might need with their studies. Parents who have that time also end up motivating the children to work harder resulting in improvement. It keeps negative influences and behaviors at bay Communication is very important between parents and children and this is something you can only achieve when you spend time together. Family time brings children and parents closer, making it easier for them to open up about issues bothering them and parents can in turn offer guidance and instill good values. In short, when you have time

for your family, your children will not end up seeking answers from negative sources or spend time in bad company that can lead to drug abuse and other bad behavior. Children with good home back-grounding are less violent and have fewer behavioral problems. It molds children into better parents How you bring up your children can determine how they bring up their families in the future. By spending family time together, you get to teach them to be better parents in the future. They get to know the value of family and develop parenting skills through you. Family time offers the perfect platform to make better parents out of your children.

5

The importance of family time really cannot be overlooked in any family setting. Strengthen the bond and develop better people by spending a little more time together.

ELECTRIC RUN TO TREAT ABU DHABI RUNNERS TO AN

ENHANCED ROUTE ON 29 JANUARY Organisers to add a brand new themed land for Abu Dhabi participants at the iconic Yas Marina Circuit

Organisers of the highly anticipated Abu Dhabi night run of the season, Daman’s ActiveLife Electric Run, have unveiled the enhanced 5K route. The World’s Brightest 5K night run is set to take place in the UAE’s capital on 29 January at the iconic Yas Marina Circuit and will debut an additional themed land for Abu Dhabi’s Electric Runners.

T

he global phenomenon will feature eight brightly coloured fantasy lands designed to enhance the overall experience of Electric Runners on the night. The Abu Dhabi event will feature a new and improved course specially designed with music soundtracks created for each of the lands and an epic end of race concert. “Daman’s ActiveLife Electric Run is designed to ignite your imagination and give participants more than just a traditional 5K run experience. The goal is to create a unique performance on the night that transports Electric Runners to an ethereal wonderland featuring many watts of light and sound and enhancing their overall high-energy journey through all eight lands,” said David Sanderson, Race Director from event organisers Fast Track. The excitement and the spectacular layout of Yas Marina Circuit is a perfect match for Daman’s ActiveLife Electric Run’s unrivalled 5K course. Electric Runners will start their journey going off in waves and make their way through a tunnel to enter the first magical world of Electro Rainforest featuring over 300 vibrantly lit umbrellas hovering overhead whilst runners run, walk or dance their way amidst the soothing sounds of the forest. Participants then pass by the largest light spectacle on the course – Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi - before they enter Teddy Bear Lane. This is the unique land where runners will make their way through the biggest glow in the dark giant teddy bear inflatables featured on the course and get the chance to rehydrate at the 2km water station. Next up is crowd favourite – Under the Sea – where glow in the dark jellyfish and UV bubbles enthral runners as they move on to the next land - Rainbow Road. This is the land of lands where a total of 24 multi-coloured lit up arches line the course and help guide runners through the course and onto the next thrilling themed land.

After recovering from their Rainbow Road experience, the runners journey along the electrifying lights of the Colour Brick Road. The next stop is Electric Avenue, the brand new land at Daman’s ActiveLife Electric Run Abu Dhabi, which will feature an exciting light show dancing to the beats of the music which makes for a great selfie as runners continue to make their way to the finish line. Crowds are then invited into Neffmau5 Land where runners can dance to Deadmau5 tracks whilst making their way through a mesmerising land covered in 250 mutli-coloured lanterns. The final stop of the 5K experience sees all the participants go through The Powerhouse – an inflatable power station which marks the end of the journey and the second water station for runners – before they cross the finish line. This is where Electric Runners will be treated to the post-race party where DJs will be spinning the latest tunes to thousands of runners in the main festival area. Join thousands of Electric Runners at Yas Marina Circuit this January and buy your ticket to one of the world’s social fun runs today at www.ElectricRun.ae or at GO Sport store across the UAE. Prices will increase from 14 January so fans are encouraged to register themselves and their friends before they sell out at their current price.

STUFF FOR MAN

"Jiggle All The Way" - NOT! So this is the time of year when many of us might go that little bit too far with some (or all) of the finer things in life. And why not? It’s as good a time of year as any, right? Your internal monologue might go like this: ‘Wow that steak covered in cheese looks amazing. And the double chocolate fudge cake with triple ice cream could just about fit and would be the perfect end to a fabulous meal. But I really shouldn…Oh, what the heck, I’ll have a jog later.’ Jingle any bells? ook, I’m not trying to make you feel bad – perhaps just a little bit! But have you ever looked in the mirror in, say, January, and thought what was looking back had more resemblance to E.T. than the fine figure of a man that once stood before you? Maybe that adorable child in your life said something like, ‘Are you going to have the baby soon, Uncle Nick?’

L

Now here’s the serious bit… If you are guilty of looking like our said extra-terrestrial friend, or Mac from Mac and Me (some of you will have this terrible 80s film as a secret, guilty pleasure, too – I know you’re out there!), then you have some problems, my friend. Notice I’m not going down the usual route of, ‘If you’re just too heavy or have some serious weight to lose.’? Well that’s because everyone already knows about the problems associated with obesity. What many of us don’t know is that clear indicators of poor and potentially lethal health are spindly arms and legs coupled with a pot-belly. Leaving all the complicated science to one side, the reasons for this are simple: the spindly arms and legs are due to a lack of physical activity and exertion; the pot belly is due to much the same, along with an excess of fat being stored in the stomach (think steak covered in cheese and double chocolate fudge cake). The consequences: diabetes, heart disease, and on, and on. Cue the simple steps to a healthier year. That’s what you’re expecting, isn’t it? Let me set you a challenge instead. See if you can exercise in the most ridiculous way possible without being committed, or deported. For example, a friend of mine used to do squats with his baby son to try and get the mite to sleep. Sometimes, when I take my own son to the play park, I use the climbing frame to exercise. This guy who used to collect rubbish (I’m English) ran between every wheelie bin he collected and the rubbish truck. My sister used to post pictures of her and her friends ‘extreme planking’. I think atop the Merlion in Singapore was the best I saw. John Cleese invented ‘silly walks’ but he was actually doing lunges, just in a fancy hat and suit. Next time you’re in Jahli park, I dare you to do the monkey bars. Maybe you could be the first to ‘extreme plank’ at the top of Burj Khalifa? What about sprints in LuLu Hypermarket? Squats when you next go to watch your kids at the swimming gala at Brighton College? See if you can spot any fellow readers of this article. But seriously…just get out there. While E.T. and Mac and Me are great films (they are so), nobody wants their own film to end in a similar way.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Every Child has a Right to

Education

Renewed partnership between UNHCR and Educate A Child to give 710,000 refugee children access to primary education

E

ducate A Child (EAC), a global programme of the Education Above All Foundation, and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, are launching a new three-year partnership that will provide access to education for 710,000 children affected by conflict and forced displacement in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Building on a partnership that has given more than 260,000 vulnerable children access to primary school since 2012, the new EAC-funded programme will continue to support the education of these children and help enrol a further 450,000 in schools over the next three years. About half of the beneficiaries are expected to be children displaced by the Syria crisis, with the rest coming from Chad, Ethiopia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Kenya, Malaysia, Pakistan, Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda and Yemen. Wars, conflict and persecution in recent years have forced millions to flee their homes and seek refuge and safety elsewhere. The number of forcibly displaced people stood at almost 60 million at the end of 2014. Children make up half of the world’s refugees, and they face the greatest risks from conflict and displacement. The need to ensure an education for children in crisis settings has never been more urgent. Refugee children are often the most marginalized and hardest to reach and help. They face challenges to get a proper education, including extreme poverty, social exclusion, trauma and language barriers.

Marcio Barbosa, Chief Executive Officer of Education Above All, welcomed the new agreement. “Despite progress, the number of outof-school children is increasing, in part due to the refugee crisis driven by conflict and insecurity. It is therefore crucial to act now through initiatives such as this partnership to put measures in place for the hundred thousands of displaced children to continue their education wherever they may be,” he said. “After the successful completion of our previous project with UNHCR, which provided access to education for over 260,000 out-ofschool children, we are confident that this project will make an impactful, positive difference to the lives of children and families who need our help the most,” Barbosa added. UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres said: “Education helps protect refugee children, and investing in a child’s education is an investment in their future and in the generations to come. This important partnership will help UNHCR overcome some of the most pressing barriers to education for hundreds of thousands of refugee children, which will give them both a safer childhood and a better future.” The new US$ 57.9 million donation from EAC will focus on improving the quality of teaching and learning; ensuring safe learning environments for children; promoting awareness and advocacy on the importance of education for refugee children; and strengthening capacity and partnerships with ministries of education and other actors to enable more refugee children to access educational opportunities. Education projects will include innovative activities, tailored to address key gaps which limit access to quality education for out-of-school children. Examples of these activities are special support for girls through peer support groups and school clubs in Uganda; a savings and loans programme for parent teacher associations in Sudan; a summer camp with educational activities for forcibly displaced children in Syria; and the provision of tablets to enhance access to reading material in Sudan, Rwanda and Ethiopia.

Chris Brown Allegedly Punches Woman in Las Vegas Chris Brown has been accused of punching a woman in the face. According to TMZ, which broke this story, the controversial singer and the alleged victim were in attendance early Saturday morning at a party inside Brown’s suite at the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas. The woman, Liziane Gutierrez, has told authorities that she snuck her cellphone into the gathering and snapped a photo of Brown. But the singer caught Gutierrez doing so, screamed at her and reportedly hit her once in the right eye. Gutierrez says she left the party immediately and called the cops a few hours later. She was never taken to a hospital. Police are investigating the allegation, although a rep for the artist tells TMZ that the woman's claims are "undeniably untrue." Brown, of course, infamously beat up Rihanna back in 2009. He never faced jail time for the incident and he is known for having a short fuse. We're not saying he committed this act or anything. We're just saying that little about Brown would surprise us at this point.

'Pitch Perfect' Stars Skylar Astin and Anna Camp Are Engaged! However, Brown learned that he is the father of a little girl named Royalty last year and has vowed ever since to clean up his act, to set a good example for his child. By Hollywood Gossip

Talk about aca-awesome -- Skylar Astin and Anna Camp will be walking down the aisle together! Astin shared an adorable selfie on Saturday, announcing the engagement via Instagram with an even sweeter caption.

Jason Wingreen Dies; Voice of Boba Fett in Star Wars Was 95 Jason Wingreen - the Brooklynborn actor best known as the voice of Boba Fett in The Empire Strikes Back - has passed away at the age of 95. Though he appeared in over 40 films and television series during his nearly five decades in the industry, Wingreen's greatest legacy will always be his unforgettable role as one of the most iconic bad guys in the Star Wars universe. In addition to voicing the most badass bounty hunter in a galaxy far, far away, Wingreen played the recurring character Harry the Bartender on the classic sitcom All in the Family. He also appeared in such television classics as The Twilight Zone, Matlock, Star Trek and Seinfeld. Interestingly, Wingreen was chosen by producers to voice Boba Fett after he unsuccessfully auditioned for the role of Yoda. 30

Natalie Cole, Grammy Winning Singer, Has Died

It was not publicly known that Wingreen voiced Boba until 2000. Wingreen says he enjoyed a "quiet, peaceful, unencumbered life" in the decades before he was outed as one of the franchise's most beloved figures. After the news of his role became public knowledge, the veteran actor lived his final years as a sought-after cult figure. Wingreen says the response from fans was immediate and "the letters just never stopped.” Sources close to Wingreen say he passed away quietly at his home in Los Angeles on Christmas Day.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Singer Natalie Cole, the daughter of jazz legend Nat “King” Cole who carried on his musical legacy, has died. Publicist Maureen O'Connor says Cole died Thursday night. She was 65. O'Connor had no details about how or where Cole died. Cole had battled drug problems and hepatitis that forced her to undergo a kidney transplant in May 2009. Cole’s 1991 album, “Unforgettable … With Love,” sold some 14 million copies and won six Grammys. It featured reworked versions of some of her father’s best-known songs. On the title cut, “Unforgettable,” she sang along with her father’s taped version to create a memorable duet. Nat “King” Cole died of lung cancer in 1965.

TECH TALK

Twitter’s new rules finally explicitly ban hateful speech and keep users from self-harm iRobot Roomba 980

In the nine years since the Roomba debuted, iRobot has released a steady stream of them, with occasional, iterative upgrades to the robotic vacuum’s sensors and cleaning components. But the basic idea has been the same — unleash the bot in a living space, and let it randomly bounce off walls and furniture until it’s covered every square inch of reachable floor. With the new 980, the venerable Roomba gains a much-needed injection of smarts. The bot now maps its environment as it moves through it, recognizing large furniture as landmark reference points, instead of something to repeatedly slam into. That makes it the most efficient and high-tech Roomba yet. [$900; irobot.com]

Twitter has had something of a rocky history with dealing with abuse and harassment on its platform, but recently the company has been making some moves to mitigate that. Its latest action comes today in the form of an update to the official Twitter rules, laying out clearer language to emphasize the company “will not tolerate behavior intended to harass, intimidate, or use fear to silence another user’s voice.”

Comparing the new rules to a cached version from yesterday, Twitter has created a new section just for abusive behavior, whereas previously that was lumped into an ‘Abuse and Spam’ section. There’s also a shift in tone from a corporate ‘we-have-to-say-this’ style to friendlier language reflecting a clearer philosophy.

Rise of the Tomb Raider Coming to PC in January Fitbit Soared to the No. 1 Spot in Apple’s App Store on Christmas Fitbit reigned as the top wearable in Apple’s App Store on Christmas. The leader of the wearables market boasted the No. 1 free app in the App Store on December 25, which seems to indicate a bevy of device activations. The Fitbit app soared 20 spots to claim the No. 1 position in the Apple App Store’s top chart of free apps in the U.S. during Christmas afternoon, according to Quartz. Unsurprisingly, Fitbit has thrived in the fourth quarters of previous years. Last fourth quarter, the company sold about 5.3 million devices, more than the previous three quarters combined.

According to Steam, Rise of the Tomb Raider will be available on the PC sometime in January. Although this isn't an official release date, it does correspond with previous reports. Back in July, Square-Enix announced that the game would be released on PC in early 2016. Two weeks ago, a listing on Amazon France had the game set for release on January 29, 2016. The Baba Yaga DLC is also set to come out in January, which would coincide perfectly with a PC release date for that month. Given all of this information, it's safe to assume the game will indeed be released on PC in January, though we don't have an exact day for its release yet.

Rise of the Tomb Raider was announced during Microsoft's Gamescom briefing in 2014 as a "2015 holiday exclusive" for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, though some were confused as to whether or not the game would be coming to other platforms. Shortly afterwards, Microsoft head Phil Spencer clarified that the game was in fact a timed exclusive, which meant that it would eventually be released on other platforms in the future. In addition to revealing the PC launch window, Square-Enix also announced that the game would come to Sony's PlayStation 4 console sometime during the 2016 holiday season.

SINFÓNICA DE GALICIA WITH

DIMA SLOBODENIOUK AND JAVIER PERIANES “Some concerts are unforgettable. This is the case with all of Javier Perianes’ performances, whose genuine and flawless art always goes deep into one’s memory.” (El Mundo)

Dima Slobodeniouk combines his native Russian roots with his years of musical studies in Finland, now his home for over two decades. Drawing together the powerful musical strengths of these countries places Slobodeniouk as one of today’s younger generation of deeply informed and intelligent artistic leaders on the podium. In February 2013 Dima Slobodeniouk was appointed Music Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia.

Awarded the ‘National Music Prize’ in 2012 by the Ministry of Culture of Spain, Javier Perianes has been described as “a pianist of impeccable and refined tastes, blessed with a warmth of touch.” (The Telegraph) His international career already spans five continents – with concerts ranging from London’s Royal Festival Hall to New York’s Carnegie Hall; Paris’s Théâtre des Champs-Élysées to Berlin’s Philharmonie; Moscow Conservatory’s Great Hall to Suntory Hall Tokyo.

Wednesday 13th January: Sinfónica de Galicia with Dima Slobodeniouk and Javier Perianes: Mahler’s 6th Symphony Venue: Emirates Palace Auditorium, Abu Dhabi Time: 8pm For the beginning of the year 2016, the season will present with Sinfónica de Galicia not only today’s leading Spanish orchestra, but also a musical ensemble that has dedicated an important share of its Symphonic work to the compositions of Gustav Mahler. For its first appearance in the Arab world, Sinfónica de Galicia with the help of the Orquesta Joven de la Sinfónica de Galicia has therefore chosen the central piece of Mahler’s Symphonic Oeuvre, the 6th Symphony. Written between 1903 and 1904, revised in 1906, the 6th Symphony ranks today among the very few pieces of the Classical Repertoire that have kept, despite plethoric scientific publications, an aura of mystery. Is it the idea of ’reconciliation of failure’ or even the ’downfall of the downfall’as critics have called it? Mahler’s 6th symphony is both fantastic and frightening, a monumental vision into the depths of human existence, a well ordered artistic chaos that embraces the listener with all its vehemence and confronts him with a gigantic yet sublime world of sound. The symphony has received an incredible number of titles through the years: “Symphony with the Hammer”, “Earthquake-Symphony”, today we call it “Tragic”, following Bruno Walter’s testimony that Mahler called it that way. Yet, the true meaning of the 6th Symphony, whether it is autobiographical, philosophical or musical, remains wonderfully out of our reach. In fact, its complexity is at the scale of its grandeur and of the premonitions that are expressed in it. In a CD booklet, the 6th was once described as an “enthralling haunted house ride in a three dimensional magnificence of sound”… Let’s get ready…

Thursday 14th January: Sinfónica de Galicia with Dima Slobodeniouk and Javier Perianes: Nights in the Garden of Spain Venue: Al Jahili Fort, Al Ain Time: 8pm For its second concert in the UAE, the amazing Sinfónica de Galicia will be playing in the superb setting of Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain. Next to featuring works of the core German romantic repertoire (Richard Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod from the Music Drama Tristan and Isolde) and Johannes Brahms last symphonic masterpiece, the 4th Symphony, the evening is dedicated to the Nights in the Gardens of Spain written between 1909 and 1916 by Spanish Composer Manuel de Falla. The symphonic poem is divided into three parts, depicting each one a Garden in Al-Andalus, thereby already announcing the Hispano-Arabic theme of the work: En el Generalife (In the Generalife), Danza lejana (A Distant Dance), En los jardines de la Sierra de Córdoba (In the Gardens of the Sierra de Córdoba). Strongly influenced by French composer Claude Debussy, Falla’s symphonic works are trying to reconcile the musical impressionism he had discovered in France with traditional Spanish folklore music. Furthermore, Falla added numerous syncopated, melismatic musical themes, clear reminders of the musical influences brought by the Arabs into Spain. The impressionist tendencies of the score then paint a diffuse landscape of harmony where tradition and modernity, Europe and Arabia fuse with each other in a magnificent dream extracted both from time and space. Note: All timings are actual start timings. We recommend guests to come 30 min before the beginning of the concert to find their seats. Doors will close at the start time. No access will be granted after the doors have been shut.
