Germany, Austria and Italy are standing together in the middle of a pitch, when Serbia bumps into Austria and spills Austria's Gatorade. Austria demands Serbia buy it a complete new suit because there are splashes on its trouser leg. Germany expresses its support for Austria's point of view. Britain recommends that everyone calm down a bit. Serbia points out that it can't afford a whole suit, but offers to pay for the cleaning of Austria's trousers. Russia and Serbia look at Austria. Austria asks Serbia who it's looking at. Russia suggests that Austria should leave its little brother alone. Austria inquires as to whose army will assist Russia in compelling it to do so. Germany appeals to Britain that France has been looking at it, and that this is sufficiently out of order that Britain should not intervene. Britain replies that France can look at who it wants to, that Britain is looking at Germany too, and what is Germany going to do about it? Germany tells Russia to stop looking at Austria, or Germany will render Russia

incapable of such action. Britain and France ask Germany whether it's looking at Belgium. Turkey and Germany go off into a corner and whisper. When they come back, Turkey makes a show of not looking at anyone. Germany rolls up its sleeves, looks at France, and punches Belgium. France and Britain punch Germany. Austria punches Russia. Germany punches Britain and France with one hand and Russia with the other. Russia throws a punch at Germany, but misses and nearly falls over. Japan calls over from the other side of the room that it's on Britain's side, but stays there. Italy surprises everyone by punching Austria. Australia punches Turkey, and gets punched back. There are no hard feelings because Britain made Australia do it. France gets thrown into the stands, but gets back up and carries on fighting. Russia gets tossed as well and knocked out, suffers brain damage, and wakes up with a complete personality change. Italy throws a punch at Austria and misses, but Austria falls over anyway. Italy raises both fists in the air and runs round the room chanting. America waits till Germany is about to fall over from sustained punching from Britain and France, then walks over and smashes it with a post and pretends it won the fight all by itself. By now all the chairs are broken and the field is littered with bodies. Britain, France and America agree that Germany threw the first punch, so the whole thing is Germany's fault. While Germany is still unconscious, they go through its pockets, steal its wallet, and buy drinks for all their friends.

Conscience..

When you look on to a flower and it blooms; When you hold a mud mould and it transforms to a sculpture; When you shed tears upon mother earth and the grass grows ; When you hold a child in your arms and he embraces your core; When your passion makes the sun rise and illuminates the world around you; When you hear the gratified voice saying, “You have created your own world my child” That’s when your soul breathes; that’s when you are content, That’s when you know you have not failed your conscience… ~Dr. Samira Ahmed

Shaikh Mohammed's son Ahmed joins UAE military service Chairman of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation His Highness Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum today completed enrolment procedures to join the national military service, alongside the fifth batch of Emirati recruits who gathered at the national service training centre at Sieh Al Lahma military camp in Al Ain. On this occasion, Shaikh Ahmed affirmed that military service is an opportunity for Emirati nationals to prove their loyalty towards their country, people and leadership, adding that national service will instil a sense of unity and solidarity among UAE citizens. He also added that national service is an opportunity to give back to the country.

Answering the country's call is an honour rather than a duty: Shaikh Ahmed.

"It gives me great honour to stand with my fellow countrymen who have joined the national military service today. I want to salute them as well as all those who have rendered military service previously and those who will do so in the future in response to the call of the country to commit to safeguarding their homeland's security and ensuring its prosperity," he said.

Shaikh Ahmed further added: "The brave men of the UAE armed forces are a source of dignity, pride and strength for us, protecting our achievements so that we can maintain the UAE's position at the forefront of developed countries. Today my fellow countrymen of the fifth batch of recruits and I are honoured to take on this great responsibility; therefore, we ask Allah Almighty to help us fulfil the obligations that the leadership has entrusted to us." Shaikh Ahmed called on his fellow recruits to present an honourable image of young Emiratis as individuals capable of shouldering great responsibilities, setting an example of commitment and discipline and living up to the high aspirations of the leadership. Shaikh Ahmed's brother, Shaikh Mansoor, is also part of the national service and recently served a stint in Yemen. He was also part of the firefighting operation at The Address Hotel in Dubai. BRAZIL’S MINING DAM FAILURE:

a “Slow-Motion Environmental Catastrophe”

Nine people are dead, with an additional 19 unaccounted, following two iron ore mining dams bursting in Brazil’s Minas Gerais region. The town of Bento Rodrigues was completely destroyed by the 60 million cubic meters of toxic mud - the equivalent of 25,000 Olympic sized swimming pools - as it makes its journey to the Atlantic Ocean. The Guardian described the disaster as a “slow-motion environmental catastrophe”. he water supply for hundreds of thousands of residents has also been devastated. The national water agency has issued a warning that the Rio Doce, otherwise known as “Sweet River,” is now contaminated with arsenic, zinc, copper and mercury, rendering the water unfit for human use. The once thriving ecosystem is now a wasteland for much of the aquatic life along the 500km length of the river, due to lack of oxygen and high temperatures. Families are advised to wash thoroughly and discard any clothing that came in contact with the mud. “It is a tragedy of enormous proportions,” said Marilene Ramos, president of Ibama, the federal

environmental agency. “We have thousands of hectares of protected areas destroyed and the total extinction of all the biodiversity along this stretch of the river.” When the thick mud hardens, it will make farming arduous. And the entire watershed could change as the silt settles along the bottom of the river. Some of the elements found in the wastewater are not biodegradable and are exceptionally toxic to aquatic organisms. The compounds can raise pH levels as well, creating further environmental harm. This has raised many unanswered questions about the potential future impacts of the toxic wastewater not only on residents’ health, but also agriculture and the long-term ecology of the entire region. “Many regions will never be the same,” said Klemens Laschesfki, professor of geosciences at the Federal University of Minas Gerais. The city of Bento Rodrigues suffered the most damage - over 600 people lost their homes, eleven people perished and 15 remain missing. The muddy red sludge from the mine has effected 635 municipalities. President Dilma Rousseff compared the scale of damage to that of the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Meanwhile, two more dams at the same mine are also at risk of bursting and are undergoing emergency repairs. Mining operators should be subject to “exemplary punishment”: “We are determined to hold responsible those who are responsible for this”, said President Rousseff. “Who is responsible? A private business, Samarco – a big business that has Vale and BHP Billiton as partners.” Brazil’s environmental regulator has

imposed preliminary fines equivalent to US$94.4 million against the Samarco mining company, which is jointly owned by Vale and BHP Billiton, for violations including river pollution and damage to urban areas. Sandra Cureau, Brazil’s deputy attorneygeneral, said the companies should be subject to “exemplary punishment” due to their carelessness in preventing the tragedy or having a disaster action plan. An alarm system was also lacking. The state environment prosecutor asserted: “This is no accident. It is a mistake in operation and negligence in the monitoring… Vale and BHP were completely careless in terms of prevention. There has been a total lack of concern with the victims.” Moreover, the Brazilian organization Instituto Pristino expressed concerns back in 2013 about the integrity of the tailings dam and urged that renewal of the license be denied. Apparently, this appeal was disregarded. Brazilian federal and state prosecutors have now announced plans to investigate whether criminal actions on the part of the mining operator contributed to this disaster, in addition to violations already found by the state. A Billion Dollar Disaster: With preliminary analysis, Deutsche Bank estimates that it will cost more than $1-billion US to clean up the mine and the communities affected by the dam failure. If the mine reopens at all, it won’t happen until 2019. Additionally, the loss of trust by workers and communities is another pressing issue. As noted by The Conversation, rebuilding trust will require an ethical and empathetic approach, one that demonstrates genuine concern for vulnerable people and the ecosystem - far surpassing the notion of profit and risk management.

FAMILY

One minute your toddler is giggling with delight and in the next, he's having an uncontrollable meltdown. Overwhelmed with emotion, he won't listen to reason. As a caregiver, you feel embarrassed, helpless and upset. What do you do?

It's easy to become overwhelmed when dealing with tantrums," says Dr. Tom Reimers, child psychologist and author of "Help! There's a Toddler in the House." "Fortunately, this common behavioral problem can often be corrected if you avoid common mistakes and take positive action."

D

r. Reimers is a childhood expert for Boys Town. He contributes to the Boys Town Toddler email series that provides parents advice on how to handle different situations. It also serves as a teaching activity to help implement the advice and skills that parents and children can work on together. Visit www.boystown. org to sign up for free. Through his extensive experience, Dr. Reimers notes the top five, most common caregiver mistakes when kids have tantrums:

14

The Source

Mistake #1. Ignoring Tantrum Precursors Tantrums often feel like they come out of nowhere, and while some are unavoidable, others can be diverted by paying attention to your child's specific cues. You may notice your child acting bored, whining, fidgeting, teasing and ignoring you. These are common clues that a meltdown may be coming soon. Being a parent can feel overwhelming. Try to be thoughtful when watching your child's unique demeanor. If you see these cues, you can take action to avoid a tantrum such as taking a break from whatever you're doing or diverting your child's attention to a new activity. Mistake #2. Starting to Count Down A common way to handle tantrums is to count down; stating that if the behavior doesn't stop by the count of three, the child is going to be in trouble. The problem is that this threat doesn't correct the behavior in a manner that a small child can understand and it often leads to a power struggle, making the situation much worse. The best approach is to walk away or resist reacting to the tantrum. Remember, your child is acting out of frustration, and when she is small, it's a difficult emotion to master. You must model the behavior you expect of her in public and at home. Once the tantrum is over and emotions have leveled, you have a better opportunity for talking about expectations. Mistake #3. Rewarding Bad Behavior Tantrums can happen at the most inconvenient times. In order to get your child to act differently in the shortest time possible, you beg him to stop by offering a treat or a sticker. Unfortunately, this sends a message to your child that bad behavior is rewarded and can make dealing with future tantrums even more difficult. Rather than rewarding bad behavior, make sure to focus on good behavior. Praising the times when she listens, follows directions, uses her manners, etc. reinforces the good. You may opt for an occasional sticker or treat as a reward if you'd like, but a "good job" and high-five from Mom or Dad is often enough to make tots grin from ear to ear. Mistake #4. Being Unprepared With Activities Life is busy. A long trip to the grocery store or another errand is often unavoidable. Many parents just power through these trips and figure their young children just have to deal with it. By the end, your toddler is having a tantrum in the checkout lane. Remember, children have short attention spans. They need things to keep them occupied, so it's important to plan ahead and bring along activities. He'll be captivated by a new library book, a small toy car, a flashlight, stickers or coloring book long enough for you to complete your errand and keep your sanity. If he gets bored, play games while you're out such as spotting colors or counting items. Mistake #5. Forgetting the Tantrum After It's Over Tantrums are terrible for both child and caregiver. Once one has passed, it's tempting to move on and forget it ever happened. However, doing this means you don't get the opportunity to talk to your child about the situation when she is calm. A better strategy once things have settled is to talk with your child directly without distractions and state clearly that tantrum behavior is unacceptable. Then, help your child learn age-appropriate coping mechanisms, like taking a deep breath and counting to 10 or hugging herself tightly. Practice these methods daily and make them a habit. "Remember, the toddler phase is short," says Dr. Reimers. "This too shall pass. In the meantime, these strategies will help tremendously."

SINFÓNICA DE GALICIA LAUNCHES NEW YEAR OF ABU DHABI CLASSICS INTERNATIONAL CONCERT SEASON WITH TWO PERFORMANCES IN EMIRATE

T

The orchestra played in the stunning settings of Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi and Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain

he distinguished Spanish orchestra Sinfónica de Galicia made its debut appearance in the Middle East with two performances in Abu Dhabi as part of the emirate’s Abu Dhabi Classics international concert season.

Featuring works of Richard Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod, from Tristan and Isolde and Johannes Brahms’ last symphonic masterpiece, the 4th Symphony, the evening was dedicated to the Nights in the Gardens of Spain, written between 1909 and 1916 by Spanish Composer Manuel de Falla.

Accompanied by conductor Dima Slobodeniouk and piano soloist Javier Perianes, the orchestra made its first appearance on Wednesday, 13th January at Emirates Palace Auditorium in Abu Dhabi for an evening dedicated to Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 and Mahler’s 6th Symphony.

The ‘symphonic poem’ is dominated by Spanish/Arab themes and paints a landscape of harmony where tradition and modernity, Europe and Asia fuse together.

Mahler’s 6th Symphony, known under many titles including ‘Symphony with the Hammer’, ‘Earthquake Symphony’ and ‘Tragic’, has been described by critics and experts as ‘both fantastic and frightening, a monumental vision into the depths of human existence, a well ordered artistic chaos that embraces the listener with all its vehemence and confronts him with a gigantic yet sublime world of sound.’ The following evening, the orchestra performed in the idyllic setting of Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain for an outdoor concert under the night sky titled ‘Nights in the Gardens of Spain’.

Dr Ronald Perlwitz, Head of Music Programme, TCA Abu Dhabi said: “With Sinfónica de Galicia, Abu Dhabi Classics is welcoming an orchestra perfectly in line with the strategy to bring young, rising ensembles to the UAE and to encourage them to perform in their core repertoire. The orchestra is at the moment not only one of the most thrilling Spanish ensembles, but has also been noticed in recent years for its brilliant Mahler interpretations. Listening to them perform in Mahler’s central symphony, the 6th, and in Al Jahili Fort with Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain was truly a rare pleasure and a great way to start the musical year.”

Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi), began last October and has welcomed some of the world’s best orchestras to the emirate under a season-long theme of ‘Music and Poetry’. The Symphony Orchestra of India, poets Gulzar and Ajoy Chakrabarty, the Belgrade Philharmonic String Quartet, Jordi Savall and Hesperion XXl and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra have all performed in the emirate while the season continues until May with leading performers including Kremerata Baltica, Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra and Matthias Goerne all set to appear at venues across the emirate this year. Helping Kids Battle

the Cold Season

Dr. Nadia Hussain

MBBS, MSc Str.M.Bio (UK), PhD Bio.Sc. (UAEU) Dr. Nadia Hussain is a physician based in Al Ain with a PhD from UAE University. She is a faculty member of Al Ain University of Science and Technology. She is a writer of several books and publications for the last fifteen years. She is also an award winning poet.

Every parent with a child in school knows that winter is synonymous with colds. Here are some ways to help protect your child from germs and illness at school:

1

Know How and When to Wash Hands One of the most common ways children contract colds is by rubbing their noses or eyes with germ infested hands. And children don't wash their hands often enough or well enough at school. Make sure your child knows to use soap and warm water. They should scrub all over -- including the backs of their hands, between fingers, and around nails -- for about 20 seconds. Then rinse well with warm water, dry with a paper towel, and use the towel to turn off the water. The most important times to wash are after using the bathroom and before eating, drinking, or touching their mouths, eyes, or noses. Ask your child's teacher to include hand-washing time before lunch or snacks and teach your child not to touch their nose, eyes, or mouth with dirty hands. Give Hand Sanitizer Hand washing is the best defense against germs but if it is not convenient then hand sanitizers are a great option. Children under six should not use sanitizer without supervision in case of accidental consumption but older children can be given sanitizers if the school allows. To make it effective, your child should rub the product all over their hands and fingers until they are dry - about 30 seconds. Teach Your Child Germ Etiquette Teach your child to stay away from sick children as much as possible. You have to teach them to avoid a person who is sneezing

2 3 18

The Source

and coughing and in turn, teach them to cover up while sneezing or coughing themselves. Tissues are great for this but in their absence, they should cough or sneeze into the crook of their elbow – not hands.

4 5 6

Don't Share at School

Beyond sticking to their own food and drinks, sharing lipstick, lip balm, creams and lotions should be off limits. With younger children, it may be difficult to avoid sharing books and toys in the classroom. For them, constant hand washing reminders are a must. Beware of Top Germ Spots

School fountains and cafeteria trays are the worst culprits so provide them with personal water and teach them not to eat anything that falls off the food tray. If hand sanitizer is available, use it after carrying the tray to the table and before eating. Keep Backpacks Clean

Clean out the backpack regularly. Empty it out and use a wet cloth or sanitary wipe to remove dripped milk and stuck-on food or crumbs. Always make sure to pack lunches in a bag or lunchbox and not loose in a backpack. The best way to help protect your child is from the inside as well. Make sure they get enough sleep and exercise, avoid stress and eat a well-balanced diet. Pack a healthy lunch and snack and encourage plenty of water consumption at school to help keep the immune system strong.

THE ALWALEED PHILANTHROPIES AND UNHCR ARE PREPARING TO LAUNCH

“TWEET FOR HEAT”

CAMPAIGN IN SUPPORT OF SYRIAN REFUGEES

T

CAMPAIGN CALLS FOR GLOBAL ACTION TO HELP PROTECT REFUGEES AGAINST SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS he Alwaleed Philanthropies (AP), chaired by HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), announced the launch of the “Tweet for Heat” Campaign, a joint global initiative designed to galvanize widespread support for the plight of Syrian refugees facing harsh winter weather conditions. With more than 4.6 million refugees spread over three continents, the “Tweet for Heat” campaign is an urgent call to action to the global community to lend their support in this critical effort to protect refugees from the dangerously cold winter temperatures by providing them with winter supplies and safe shelter.

20

The Source

The Alwaleed Philanthropies and the UNHCR have also partnered with the World Scout Foundation, which will be the “Tweet for Heat” campaign’s on-the-ground distributor of the winter supplies to the refugees. As part of the campaign’s effort to put a human face on the Syrian refugee crisis, 50 refugee families will be tweeting their room temperature through a given heat-monitoring device which will automatically tweet the changing temperatures they will be enduring with the #TweetforHeat. “The reason behind our use of social media technology and specifically Twitter is because it is the fastest way to spread awareness of the plight of refugees, and encourage the global community to participate in support of refugees around the world,” says HRH Princess Lamia Bint Majed Al Saud, Executive Manager of Media & Communications of the Alwaleed Philanthropies. “We are very pleased to partner with Alwaleed Philanthropies on such an innovative and timely initiative. We are hoping for generous support from the global community to help protect the refugees from a harsh winter,”

points out Dr. Nabil Othman, UNHCR Acting Regional Representative for the GCC. “Refugees suffering does not wait”, Dr. Othman emphasizes. The Alwaleed Philanthropies have a long history of supporting refugees around the world in times of crisis. Alwaleed Philanthropies donated SR 1,500,000 for the relief of nearly 46,000 children and families both inside and outside the Syrian borders. This was done in cooperation with all of Nolabi Al-Nida, Regional Food Bank and Save the Children. This initiative came after snow waves hit in 2013 and damaged refugee camps in Lebanon and Jordan, thus providing competent authorities with the support of the newborn Foundation for humanitarian assistance in providing food, medicine and clothing for families residing in the camps. All the necessary medical services were provided in order to avoid the spread of diseases and epidemics. Since the beginning of the Syrian refugee exodus, the Syrian Refugee’s Support Initiative at the Alwaleed Philanthropies has donated over SR 5,625,000 through strategic partnerships with some of the world’s most trusted global aid organizations.

The Alwaleed Philanthropies support and initiate projects in 104 countries, regardless of gender, race or religion. We collaborate with a range of philanthropic, government and educational organizations to combat poverty, empower women and youth, develop communities, provide disaster relief and create cultural understanding through education. AUTO REVIEW

MERCEDES-AMG GLE 63 4MATIC COUPÉ THE PINNACLE OF STYLE AND PERFORMANCE I must have been a good boy this Christmas because Santa – with a little help from our friends at Eastern motors and the Al Fahim Group - delivered the most incredible four wheeled chariot imaginable and it was mine to command for the entire holiday week end! I should also mention that my 11 year old son basically slept in the vehicle to maximise the possible time spent with his latest infatuation and when that most unfortunate time to repatriate the vehicle to its rightful owner arrived, I had to pry Joshua out of the massaging front leather seat with a crowbar!

A

las, like so many of life’s magical moments, my rendezvous with Amanda Magdalena Grace – a name derived from AMG and yes, I had already named her – came to an end. But your potential romantic encounter with a mechanical, testosterone inducing Goddess is waiting for you right here in Al Ain, at Eastern Motors. Allow me to properly acquaint you with the beauty and aweinspiring features of a mobile dream come true: The ultimate embodiment of success, style and performance, the all-new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 4MATIC Coupé is an exciting interpretation of a four-door SUV coupé that has no equal. An expressive masculine vehicle, this commanding SUV meets the highest of standards in terms of performance, design and comfort to deliver a dynamic on-road driving experience, whatever the terrain.

The new GLE 63 4MATIC Coupé combines the sportiness of a coupé with the strengths of an SUV. Exceptional agility, distinctive engine sound and typical sports car acceleration are united with poise, assurance, tremendous pulling power and perfect traction. Its avant-garde exterior design and exclusive interior adds to its stand-out appeal - a unique creation for those looking for an all-round vehicle with high-performance technology and an emotional design. The all-new GLE 63 4MATIC Coupé comes with a powerful, hand-built AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine and a wealth of AMG-tuned enhancements that add unrivalled performance to its sleek coupé styling and commanding SUV strength. The one-of-a-kind engine is hand-built according to the traditional AMG philosophy of "one man, one engine". A characteristic feature of the "one man, one engine" production process is the AMG engine plate bearing the signature of the responsible engine fitter. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative production quality, the AMG engine plate also attests to the peerless DNA of MercedesBenz's high-performance brand. The AMG RIDE CONTROL sport suspension works with the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM and the AMG-specific Sports DirectSteer system to make handling tremendously responsive and cornering razor-sharp. And thanks to the AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive and 5 DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes, the agile and adaptive GLE 63 4MATIC Coupé is ready to match your driving mood, whatever it may be. The 5 DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes of Slippery, Individual, Comfort, Sport and Sport+, which the driver selects using a rotary control on the centre console, assign fundamentally different characteristics in terms of driving dynamics. Design: commanding, extrovert and powerful Visually, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 4MATIC Coupé skilfully embodies the firmly established principles of Mercedes-Benz design: sensuousness and clarity. The top-of-the-range V8

model from Affalterbach manages in an emotively appealing way to bring the fascination of motorsport to everyday life with a powerful dominance. A first glance reveals the new fourdoor coupé to be an extrovert, standing powerfully on its large wheels. High-grade interior: exclusive design elements and features Like the exterior design, the interior of the GLE 63 4MATIC Coupé also boasts many exclusive design elements and features. Highgrade materials, first-class precision and a luxurious quality feel are the hallmarks of the interior. Thanks to its distinctive upholstery with greater contouring and higher side bolsters at the front, the sports seats offer excellent lateral support. Perforated nappa leather, special seat upholstery layout with topstitching and AMG badges make for an exclusive look and feel. This is further complemented by the 3-spoke Performance steering wheel in black nappa leather. Attractive equipment packages The GLE 63 4MATIC Coupé has many extraordinary features. The Driving Assistance package Plus includes DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot, PRE-SAFE® Brake with pedestrian detection, BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and PRE-SAFE® PLUS. The Parking package with 360° camera and Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC guarantees an excellent overview and problem-free manoeuvring into and out of parking spaces. Night-time visibility is improved by the LED Intelligent Light System which is a standard feature on all models; adverse weather conditions resulting in impaired visibility are defused by MAGIC VISION CONTROL – the heated, adaptive windscreen wiper system. For the first time, projection of the Mercedes star onto the floor has been integrated into the ambient lighting and is activated on opening and closing the vehicle.

STUFF FOR MEN

H

MAY THE 'FORCE' GUIDE YOU!

ow would you judge the following?: it’s 1983, a three year old boy, obsessed with Star Wars due to the release of the latest instalment, Return of the Jedi, accompanies his father to collect his mother from the department store she works in. As he walks into the shop, his mother directs the little boy to ‘just walk around that corner.’ The boy dutifully sets off, humming the epic notes of the ‘good guy’ Star Wars theme as he goes – duh, duh, duh, duuur, duuur…! What the little boy isn’t bargaining on is Darth Vader walking right up to him, grabbing him by the scruff of the neck and hauling him up to eye level. Guessed who the little boy is? Now, looking back I can see how the folks meant the joke to go, but at the time… well, that’s a different matter. Safe to say, Darth had to prove that he was actually just Dave, the guy who worked in security, dressed up to entertain the kids. Cruel? Funny? Misguided? All of the above? No matter the impact at the time, that memory lives on, as vivid in my mind today as the day it happened. It somehow made the film even more special. The characters, for one brief moment, were real, holding me by the scruff of the neck. Oliver Bromley-Hall, along with wife, Lisa and son, Henry join the Al Ain community from Retford, North Nottinghamshire, via the beautiful (hu-hum) town of Doncaster.

For so many of us, Star Wars is a rite of passage, an experience that binds father to son, friend to friend. Die-hard fans are willing to right off the middle films and all of their Jah-Jah Binks nonsense. The force is just too strong with the originals. So when it became possible to initiate my own son’s Star Wars rite of passage, how could I resist? Don’t get me wrong, two and a half hours in a cinema with a three and a half year old boy is not particularly easy. Ever had the cinema experience where a child runs up and down the aisles, throws popcorn and climbs over chairs? We were that family. Sorry if you were there. But it was well worth it. You might be thinking, ‘what is this guy talking about?’ There is a point, honestly. After watching the new Star Wars, I got to thinking about rites of passage. A new arrival to the UAE, I was interested to find out about traditional rites of passage here. Bedouin boys, when they came of age, were expected to find their way to a distant oasis with no help or assistance. There’s something courageous, honourable, oldfashioned-manly about it. I was hooked on the weird world of rites of passage from across the globe. There are some seriously hair raising ones out there: lion hunting for Masaai boys in parts of Africa, with little more than a pointy stick as a weapon; Land Divers in Vanautu

(people literally jump off a wooden house type thing with branches wrapped around their legs) and ritual beatings for naughty youngsters by the elders of the Matis people in the Amazon. Now I’m not sure I fancy any of that (or if any of that would be legal, ethical or sane), but back in the UK and other Western countries, I struggle to think of anything that could stack up. Rites of passage back home have more in common with the film The Inbetweeners (teenage boys, Magaluf, nightclubs) than the Bedouin, honour and all that other good stuff. So what does stack up as a rite of passage? Some people do things like the Wadi Adventure Race; others watch nostalgic films, play music (I’m pretty sure David Bowie has been pivotal in many rites of passage, just as Star Wars has), or read books (On the Road, anyone?); maybe travelling to other countries? Perhaps all of these things are a way, an excuse even, in this most advanced of ages, for people to bond, face to face (not on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram) by experiencing and overcoming something together? It’s the Darth Vader-grabbing-you-by-the-scruff-ofthe-neck moment. I don’t have the answers, I’m afraid. All I do know is that you should go and see Star Wars, if you haven’t already.

FAZZA Championship for Falconry Telwah

C

Outright victors in Sheikhs and general public categories decided on action-packed finals day in Al Ruwayyah heers of ‘Namoos’ (‘Your deserved reward’) and mobile phone ringtones rang round the majlis as the outright winners of the Fazza Championship for Falconry Telwah were crowned to universal acclaim earlier this month.

Organised and supervised by the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center (HHC), the finals day saw Sheikhs and the general public compete in two sub-categories – ‘Farkh’ and ‘Jernaas’ – across 10 separate showdowns apiece, ranging from ‘Jeer Tibha’ and ‘Pure Jeer’ to ‘Shaheen Wahsh’ and ‘Qarmoosha.’ A distinct lull in the noise levels descended on the majlis while all of the falcons were in full flight, but that pensive silence was swiftly broken by calls and congratulations once a clear victor had emerged from the fray. Mohammed Abdullah bin Dalmook, Director of Corporate Support at HHC commented: “The attendance is high and I’m really happy that, when the falcon is flying through the air, everybody is quiet and waiting for the result. That means that it’s grasping the attention of all of the audience in the majlis. “This has been the best edition of this championship we’ve ever staged in terms of showcasing better falcons and better falconers, who have more experience. Very few of these falconers are first-timers and almost all of them are professionals now.”

28

The Source

Souad Ibrahim Darwish, Director of Championships at HHC, said: “We’ve reached a very high level with the championship this year in all aspects – the registration procedure, the falcons and falconers and the attendance figures, which were higher than in 2015. We’ve also managed to reinforce our national identity in the process. The most important thing about this whole event is to portray our intangible culture and heritage.” Hamad Buhelaiba, who prevailed in one of the two Qarmoosha Farkh classifications, explained: “It feels very good when you win. The most important thing for me is when people say to you: ‘Well done’ and it’s not about the car or the prizes in my eyes.’ My friends are phoning me up from their homes or workplaces right now and it’s a really nice feeling.” Hussain Lootah, 27, emerged triumphant from one of the dozen Jeer falcon categories. He stated: “It’s a very good feeling to have won a competition like this. This is the second tournament we’ve won this year with a Jeer falcon, so it’s all going well. These falcons are actually bred on my farm here in the UAE. We’ve seen them develop and grow from day one until now. I’ve been a falconer since I was a kid and probably from when I was about four years old. It runs in the family and they will, of course, be very proud of this achievement.” Renowned falconer Khalifa bin Mejren failed to join the likes of Buhelaiba and Lootah on the top step of the podium in the Telwah event, however, Bin Mejren did manage to steal the show during the airplane finale of The Fazza Championship. Pilot Khalifa bin Mejren locked out the podium positions for his NAS K team in the Sheikhs classification of the airplane tournament final. Bin Mejren had already secured the top three places in the final by the time his fifth – and final – contender set off in hot pursuit of the prey attached to a detachable parachute at the back of a remote-controlled plane. The renowned falconer need not have pushed too hard then with a dominant display and an outright victory already assured, yet he and his female flyer shot round the orange cone and crossed the line in the best time of the day overall: 1:13.976s. Bin Mejren had achieved the 1-2-3, as well as fourth, and even some late drama couldn’t detract from a supreme showing as it transpired his first challenger was to be disqualified after Bin Mejren cut a corner around the cone. Competition rules state that a 10-second time penalty is activated if a falcon takes a shortcut at the turn for home. However, a pilot’s transgression in that particular regard results in an automatic DQ. Still, even that unexpected setback couldn’t take the gloss off an otherwise pristine performance from Bin Mejren and his very own ‘Fab Four.’ Young Emirati falconers were also involved taking centre stage as the competition saw more than 400 local youngsters challenging across two sub-categories – ‘Tibah Wahash’ and ‘Jeer Tibha.’ An impressive turnout from the UAE falconers of tomorrow were warmly welcomed by the organisers of this popular and prominent event in the Fazza Championships, which aims to maintain historically significant pastimes and pursuits associated with the UAE’s heritage and its people.

Steve Harvey Finally Speaks About Miss Universe Gaffe, Interviews Winner

For the first time since incorrectly announcing the winner of the 2015 Miss Universe pageant last month, host Steve Harvey will speak about the incident and interview both the winner, Miss Philippines, and runner-up, Miss Colombia, in a two-day Steve Harvey show he’s calling “Miss Universe: The Truth.” In a preview clip, Harvey became emotional when addressing how he coped with the snafu, crediting his wife and her soothing words. The host also revealed the troubling consequences of going through this in the public eye, referencing things like “death threats against your family” and how

“difficult” it has been. Rumors have swirled about how Harvey could have butchered such a big moment, with some saying he didn’t bother to attend rehearsals for the gig - an allegation that Miss Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach, cleared right up. “I think I can vouch for this one,” she said. “Steve was there throughout all the rehearsals.” Harvey’s conversation with Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutiérrez, will air next week. But he did offer an apology in the meantime saying, “I’m truly sorry. I wish we all could have gotten it right that night.”

6 Fast Facts About Oscar-Nominated Actress Brie Larson At only 26 years old, Brie Larson is taking the world by storm. After starring in Amy Schumer's comedy Trainwreck and the drama Room, the actress has gained a lot of momentum in the entertainment industry, including a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar nomination for best actress. As she quickly becomes the new It girl of Hollywood, people are dying to know all they can about her.

Sandra Bullock Explains Why She’ll Never Take A Selfie Sandra Bullock is not about that selfie life. The Our Brand Is Crisis actress opened up about why she can’t stand the trendy up close and personal self-portraits that have taken the Internet by storm.

Chris Rock Calls Out

“I hate taking selfies,” the 51-yearold revealed in an interview with U.K.’s The Times. “I will not take a selfie that I can’t erase. I don’t post or do any of that stuff.”

The Oscars Lack Of Diversity In Perfect Tweet

Bullock says that the main reason behind her frustration is that the images are unrealistic. “We’re not representing our lives truthfully,” she explained. “Like when you’re yelling at your child, you’re not taking a selfie of you being a horrible parent.” “No, you’re waiting for the perfect selfie.” she continued. “'Do I look thinner now?’ 'Do I look great?’ It’s this false projection of one’s life. Hollywood has now gone global. Everyone’s Hollywood now.” 30

Seeing as she’s now a mother of two adopted children – she welcomed Laila, 3, to her family in December 2015 and Louis, 5, in 2010 – we understand why she chooses to opt out of social media.

Some call it The Oscars, others The Academy Awards, but host Chris Rock has an even better title. The 2016 Academy Award nominations, announced Thursday, revealed only white performers were nominated in the acting categories. Sadly, the lack of diversity has been a recurring theme with the show. And the new host couldn't resist calling it out with a perfect tweet: "The #Oscars. The White BET Awards," wrote Rock while sending out a new promo. Something tells us his jokes are going to have a theme this year. In the spot, Rock counts down the top three reasons to watch the Oscars, but really everyone's No. 1 is going to be watching the host rip apart his own show.

TECH TALK

Apple finally put together a full list of cars with CarPlay No, Apple isn’t working on a tool to make it easier to go from iOS to Android

Over the weekend, a rumor that Apple was at work on a tool that would allow users to switch from iOS to Android surfaced. Turns out, it’s nonsense. Speaking to Buzzfeed, Apples spokesperson Trudy Miller had the following to say: There is no truth to this rumor. We are entirely focused on switching users from Android to iPhone, and that is going great. The impetus for the creation of this tool was alleged to be several European telcos, which were reportedly unhappy with Apple’s one-way street for switching platforms. Apple currently has an Android app for switching to iOS. Whether those companies are or were unhappy is a moot point, it seems. Besides, Apple likes to brag about how many Android users switch to iOS - why would they give that up?

Apple's CarPlay made a splash at CES last week, with auto makers like Ford, Chrysler, and Volkswagen incorporating the sleek iOS-like infotainment interface into some of the show's biggest press conferences. With CarPlay expanding throughout the automotive industry, Apple has finally launched a dedicated website to track which car makes and models now support the standard.

CarPlay, unveiled at Apple's WWDC conference in June 2015, lets you plug your iPhone into your car and control entertainment and communication features through the vehicle's central display. It's now available in over 100 models from 21 brands, all of which Apple says either have a model supporting CarPlay available now or on the way this year. Older vehicles can also be retrofitted with audio systems supporting CarPlay.

Savour 'Flavours' Your favourite dining destination at Al Ain’s landmark Hilton Hotel is back and ready to impress after a complete and stunning makeover. Flavours has both a new look and feel so when the offer came to sample the culinary delights of the latest, greatest dining digs in town, I jumped at the chance to introduce the family to a brilliant new venue serving up their favourite chow of all time, Italian cuisine!

T

he new restaurant, along with their famous Friday brunches, boasts weekly decadent theme nights certain to satisfy every foodies fancy. These include: Italian Night on Tuesdays, Asian Night on Wednesdays, Arabic Night on Thursdays and Turkish Night on Fridays. I should also mention that as well as a new and improved “Flavours”, the Hilton Al Ain is very proud to welcome the gastronomic magic of their new Executive Chef, Inan Dogru who hails from the small town of Kesnan in the northwest of Turkey. If authentic Turkish dishes are on your list of all time favourites, you can rest assured that your cravings will be more than satisfied every Friday night with Chef Inan at the helm. Since my two boys are both pasta fanatics and this was to be a family event, Italian Night was an inevitable choice. We were greeted by the lovely Alona from the Hilton’s marketing team, and after a couple of prize photos alongside the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, we were comfortably nestled at a cozy table ready to indulge in a food fair of all things Italy. The soft tones of upholstery accented with marble floors, wooden panels and patterned glass converged at an

immaculate open concept kitchen and buffet area teeming with mouth watering creations. In fact, so drastic was the transformation of space, it was difficult to imagine this being the same place we had visited so many times in the past. The one thing that really impressed me about this particular buffet, besides the mouthwatering display was its simplicity in contrast to the usual more is better philosophy adopted by similar establishments. There was no shortage of excellent choices available but the focus was definitely on quality as opposed to quantity and each selection was fresh and immaculately presented. I tried my best to sample a taste of everything before complete and utter satiation threatened to burst me at the seams and although every taste was absolutely delightful, the short ribs were quick to instigate a lingering love connection that I would not soon forget – they were absolutely to die for! With Italian Night crossed off the list, we have 3 more euphoric nights of ambrosia to look forward to and if awesome food and gorgeous surroundings sound inviting to you, then we may just see one another very soon savouring an evening out at Flavours! S

uzhou, located in southeastern China, is that place. Located in the center of the Yangtze River Delta, approximately 60 miles west of Shanghai, Suzhou is one of the oldest cities in the region, dating back more than 2,500 years. Today, Suzhou is one of the hottest travel destinations in China, offering plenty to see and do in a dynamic and beautiful setting Nine of the world's most beautiful gardens Classical Chinese garden design flourishes in Suzhou where nine of the city's gardens have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Two of these gardens, Humble Administrator's Garden and Lingering Garden, are considered the most famous gardens in all of China. Humble Administrator's Garden is the nation's largest garden, defined by its pristine collections of small forests and the gentle patter of the water feature that is the garden's backdrop. Lingering Garden blends man-made construction and nature's beauty into one scenic experience. Domiciles and temples come together with native trees and flowers that intertwine along with intricate wood carvings and a collection of rocks deliberately arranged in the garden by its original creators. The world's longest canal makes Suzhou the Venice of China One of the best ways to enjoy the history and beauty of Suzhou's landmarks and waterside gardens is relaxing in a boat. Suzhou's narrow water passages are some of the oldest in the world and perfect for any traveler looking to take in the city's original charm. Reach out and touch the plants in the garden of Mudu as you float by with the gentle backdrop noise of the boat's soft paddle touching the water. Or, float beneath the famed bridges of the Wujiang District where newlyweds routinely cross in the hopes the tradition will bring them happiness, peace and fortune.

One of the world's richest historical sites Located adjacent to the Humble Administrator's Garden is the Suzhou Museum, designed by world-renowned architect I.M. Pei, where guests are treated to a collection of ancient ceramics, wood carvings and other cultural artifacts illustrating the past. The city is also home to The Suzhou Silk Museum, which showcases Suzhou's title as the silk capital of China and offers guests a historical look at the silk production of yesteryear that made the city famous. Visitors can experience the step-by-step silk-making process starting with the silk worm and moving on to thread and finished products. A festival for every occasion and food you won't forget No Suzhou travel experience is complete unless it includes attendance at one of the city's numerous festivals, which take place across the city throughout the year. The Hanshan Temple Bell Ringing Festival, for example, takes place every year on Dec. 31. Thousands of people flock to the 1,500-year-old temple to hear the monks strike the bell 108 times which is said to bring good luck in the New Year. Meanwhile, the Spring Festival marks the Chinese New Year and is notorious for its amazing fireworks display and unforgettable parade. Festivals are also a remarkable time to enjoy Suzhou's succulent cuisine. Watch the parade from a seat in a classic Suzhou Tea House or dine on Fengzhen noodles beneath the fireworks. The tastes and the memories are unforgettable. Plan your visit to Suzhou today With the gardens, the canal, the history and the culture - there's plenty to do in Suzhou and getting to the region has never been easier. It may just be the trip of a lifetime.
