These ladies – you know who you are – have, without conditions, welcomed me into their cozy morning, coffee stimulated chat club, without any of the nasty, backstabbing competiveness synonymous with the opposite sex. Which brings us to that age old conundrum of whether or not men and women can be good friends? Sexual tension will inevitably exist between any red-blooded, heterosexual man and woman. And then there’s the jealousy that plagues many rational people when a significant other befriends someone of the opposite sex. Boil it down to the inherent differences between the sexes. It just can't be done; right?

Some of my best friends have been and still belong to the female persuasion of our complicated species and I wouldn’t have it any other way. So, here is to the more beautiful, soft, squishy and sweet smelling members of Homo sapiens; I love and respect you!

He was also listed as the most 'liked' leader in the GCC, on Facebook. His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, climbed up two spots to rank as the fourth most popular global leader last year, according to a report released by the Washingtonbased Digital Policy Council (DPC). The Digital Policy Council (DPC) released its sixth annual ranking of world leaders on Twitter as a means of communication and diplomacy within the political landscape. Mirroring last year's trend, new sign-ups by heads of state remain almost negligible in 2015. Analyses as of December 2015 reveal that 83 per cent heads of state worldwide are active on Twitter. A total of 139 world leaders out of 167 countries had accounts on Twitter set up in their personal name or through an official government office, which reflects a mere 1 per cent increase over 2014. Shaikh Mohammed continued to make waves as his account grew by almost 2 million followers in 2015. He was also listed as the most 'liked' leader in the GCC, on Facebook. His Twitter feed is a testament of his vision for UAE as a pioneering state that believes in, using technology to fuel innovation in every walk of life. An avid poet, Shaikh Mohammed also shares candid moments from his personal life with his fans including tweeting a picture of himself cooking food for his friends during a forest trip. ENVIRONMENT

Trump’s pretensions to leadership are symptomatic of everything that ails the GOP. What’s dressed up as patriotism is, in fact, the failure to adapt to a fastchanging world. t High School, my mate Dan was an excellent student. I don’t mean that he swotted it up while others ran and jumped and fell in love. He did all that. I mean that when exam time rolled round, Dan would dig himself out of whatever hole he’d spent the semester digging himself into and climb to the top of the class. We called him Dan the Deliveryman. The pressure of other people’s expectations fired him up. We all told him he’d do great, and our teachers niggled him constantly about his natural abilities. His girlfriend, the hottest chick in school, pushed him like a locomotive. Dan needed it to count, and he needed others to tell him it counted. Then Dan went to university. There, invisible to teachers and anonymous among classmates, the pressure was off. The girlfriend moved on and then suddenly, like a pizza boy with a flat tire, Dan stopped delivering. It was as if a great big crevasse opened up and swallowed him. Last I heard, he was

A

drifting through nowhere jobs, struggling to climb out of bed. With the benefit of hindsight, it’s clear that Dan lost himself in the environment of independent learning at uni. In an everchanging world, the failure to adapt can bring disaster. Train-Wreck Trump Presidential candidate Donald Trump says he wants to get America back on track. But his attitude to alternative energy promises to keep it running off the rails. I am reminded of a story in Enid Blyton’s Famous Five series, Five Go Down to the Sea, which my kids love. It recounts the evil deeds of Wreckers--coastal people who guided ships onto rocks with false lights to pillage the contents and murder passengers and crews for their valuables. Such are Trump and the GOP. These people have made fortunes in the status quo, and they want to go on milking the coal cow as long as they can. They deny the reality of climate change, dressing up their failure to adapt as patriotism. Their stance demonstrates just how tight a grip vested interests have on conservative American politics. Fundamentally, they are afraid of change. And in a world in which change is constant,

they are being left behind. Coal is on the way out, and solar is on the way in. Even in an economic environment where coal is cheaper than dirt, during 2015 the US installed seven gigawatts of solar capacity. The solar sector added 35000 jobs, pushing the industry total up to 240,000 by the end of this year. Business is booming thanks to solar investment tax credits, positive developments for solar net metering in California and, now, the agreement at COP21. Gradually, policymakers are climbing aboard. On January 13, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced plans to eliminate all use of coal in the state by 2020. The day before that, President Obama’s State of the Union speech announced a push to “change the way we manage our oil and coal resources so that they better reflect the costs they impose on taxpayers and our planet.” With change underway both on the ground and at the top, Trump and the GOP will find themselves increasingly isolated. Of course, Donald might win the election, and then the farce will go on. And, just as Britain’s economic dominance did not survive the colonial era, the US’s economic dominance might not survive the Trainwreck.

FAMILY

There are few parents who don't occasionally worry about whether or not their child is being bullied at school. In recent years, the issue has gained national attention, and efforts to educate students, parents and teachers on how to stop bullying have made a big impact, but the problem is still prevalent. Seventy percent of kids report they have seen bullying in their schools, prompting the founding of initiatives such as Stop Bullying: Speak Up, whose mission is to encourage kids to tell parents, teachers or another adult about bullying when they see it.

A

t the heart of such efforts is the idea that bullying can be stopped through positive relationship building. Strong, interpersonal relationships between children can stop bullying before it starts. But how is this to be accomplished? The following five tips are simple steps families and educators can take to encourage meaningful relationships and help put an end to bullying. Take a pledge - Having kids take a pledge to stop bullying is a great way to lay out clear guidelines on what they should do if they see bullying, who to tell and how to comfort the kid who is bullied. The Speak Up Pledge provides clear guidelines for how to respond to bullying. Teach kids to be friendly to someone who's getting picked on - Kids who are bullied often need a friend, they're misunderstood and a little kindness can go a long way. Letting them know it's not their fault

14

The Source

is an important step to cultivating kindness and respect. Build trust - Establishing trust makes it more likely kids will report bullying to an adult when they see it. Adults can build trust as simply as saying hello, asking how a kid's day is going, and most importantly, by listening. Books - Assigning or reading a book with kids that addresses bullying is a great way to begin a dialogue and to build trust. Such books allow kids to identify with incidents they have experienced and give them strategies to deal with bullying in their own lives. There are many valuable resources available for teachers looking to design a syllabus and for parents looking for a selection of titles that deal with bullying. Build relationships through a diversity club - Victims of bullying are often singled out because they are different. Encouraging kids about the value of inclusion and to respect differences, whether it has to do with ethnicity, sexual orientation, disabilities or just behavioral differences, makes everyone happier and is an important way to stop bullying before it begins.

Al Noor Hospital

leads the charge for Cervical Cancer Awareness Al Noor Hospital, the leading health care provider in Abu Dhabi was once again at the forefront of community service on January 24th as it greeted Al Ain in style with a campaign for cervical health awareness. January is the month each year dedicated worldwide for cervical health. The Source was on hand to help spread the necessary awareness and to meet Dr. Maha Majeed Hameed, consultant OB-Gyne and the Al Noor team in what was to be a day of educating the public about the importance of screenings and vaccinations in the battle against a preventable killer.

18

The Source

E

ach year, 500,000 women worldwide develop cervical cancer. Around 300,000 women die from the disease. And yet, cervical cancer is preventable -; regular screening, along with vaccination, could prevent nearly every case. In the UAE, cervical cancer is the second most prevalent cancer among women and ranks in 7th place among illness related killers of females in the country. What is cervical cancer? Cancer can develop in any part of the body, including the cervix - the lower, narrow part of a woman's uterus. The human papillomavirus (HPV), a common, sexually transmitted virus, causes cervical cancer. Most HPV infections go away without symptoms or treatment, but certain high-risk types of HPV can cause the cervix to produce abnormal cells, which can eventually become cancerous. Why screening? Screening helps find abnormal cervical cells before they become cancerous. When caught early, these abnormal cells can be easily removed to prevent cancer from developing. Cervical cancer doesn't have symptoms until the disease reaches advanced stages, so women should be screened regularly all through their life, even if they feel healthy. The Pap test looks for abnormal cervical cells. The HPV test detects high-risk types of HPV, which can lead to abnormal cervical cells. In women 30 and older, the Pap and HPV tests together provide the best screening protection against cervical cancer. Girls and young women can be vaccinated against the two most common cancer-causing HPV types -; 16 and 18 -; which are responsible for about 70 percent of cervical cancers. Studies have shown that vaccination is highly effective at preventing cervical disease. However, vaccination does not protect against all high-risk HPV types. "Even women who have been vaccinated must be screened to protect against cervical cancer caused

by the HPV types not included in the vaccines," said Dr. Maha Majeed Hameed. Cervical Cancer: Common Risk Factors "Women who don't get screened are the ones who are at highest risk," says Dr. Maha. She adds that women who have weak immune systems (due to HIV infection, for example) and those who smoke – shisha included - are at higher risk of developing cervical cancer. Other risk factors to be aware of and talk to your doctor about: • You have chlamydia, a common sexually transmitted disease. • You eat few fruits and vegetables. • You are overweight. • You take oral contraceptives (birth control pills). • You have had multiple full-term pregnancies. • Your mother or sister had cervical cancer. Whether or not you have risk factors for cervical cancer, it is important for every woman to have regular Pap tests. A Pap test can detect precancerous changes in the cells of the cervix before they become cancer, and early detection means a much better chance of survival. Talk to your doctor about how frequently you should be tested. It's a fast and painless test that could save your life. This year and in all the years to come, help Al Noor Hospital battle a preventable disease that through education, vaccination and proper screening can be eradicated and no longer pose a threat to women around the world. Visit the state of the art facilities at Al Noor Hospital today and speak with their highly trained staff about FREE vaccinations available and proper preventative screenings. YOU ARE TRULY IN GOOD HANDS AT AL NOOR!

A TASTE OF DESERT THAT’LL LIVE LONG IN THE MEMORY

T

The saying that every day is an education and an opportunity to learn something new will undoubtedly have rung true for 16 hardy souls following their epic 500km desert adventure. his camel trek expedition, which was organized and supervised by the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center (HHC), showcased a more nomadic, Bedouin lifestyle to various nationalities over the course of a 10day period. The HHC organizes traditional events such as this one as part of their mission to preserve the national heritage of the UAE and promote it among people of different backgrounds and generations so that it is widely recognized both regionally and internationally. There would be no hotel stays or spa breaks whatsoever on this city getaway as the projected path took in little-known and remote outposts around Sharjah, Al Ain and Dubai. It did – at least – afford participants from France, India and Malaysia the opportunity to escape the everyday pressures and stresses of modern-day life and experience calmness, peace of mind and tranquility, all while traversing the sandy terrain of the great outdoors here in the UAE on camelback. That quaint description may well sound like an ideal, romanticised Utopia, but the trip was not without its challenges and tasks in what amounted to an elongated endurance test for all in attendance. Travelling for eight hours-plus a day on an unfamiliar animal with a thin rug for a cushioned saddle is a physically demanding exercise after all, especially while exposed to the elements amid a virtually barren landscape. Minor things can seem major. Mountains might be made out of molehills without the close-at-hand comforts of home and the technological devices and gadgets that we are all readily accustomed to nowadays. However, in the face of adversity, there came camaraderie and a unity of purpose. Indeed, if one camel trekker was experiencing difficulty at any specific stage, the cavalry rallied round in support to sort out the stumbling block. Such staunch togetherness is, in itself, an impressive achievement considering this multi-national cast didn’t even know each other pre-2016. A fair few of the intrepid explorers admitted teamwork was of paramount importance to ensure the trek stayed on track for the full week and a half. That wasn’t the only binding bond either that stayed the course, with the near-constant interaction with the camels also set to linger long in the memory. Charlotte Sarrazin, of France, for example had twigged some of her own camel’s character traits and dietary habits by the halfway stage. No apples, no bananas and no cuddles, yet KitKats aplenty were the way to curry favour. Mohammed Bin Taryam’s camel was the exact opposite, with an evidently adverse reaction to KitKats offset by an apparent adoration of apples, bananas and cuddles.

22

The Source

The camels weren’t the only ones to get the occasional treat though, with the trekkers themselves getting to experience sleeping under cloudless skies and moonlit nights after their rides had been safely settled down in the evenings. There, in silence, solitude and stillness, participants could unclutter their minds and gain a different perspective away from the skyscrapers and Sheikh Zayed Road. “It has been amazing and there are no words for the feelings that we’ve experienced,” Sarrazin said. “It was just fantastic to be disconnected completely and to be with the camels. “I learnt about Emirati culture – and the cultures of everyone around me – every day. It was 200 per cent fun – and challenging – and I’ve learnt so much. “We can consider ourselves lucky to have had a taste of such an experience, so you have to eat every single little piece. You cannot let it go. I’ll do it again.” Those same sentiments were shared by plenty of others of this trip, with Indian national Rasheenah Ahmad commenting: “It has probably been one of my best ‘holidays’ and a wonderful experience all in all. It was amazing and a great learning curve. “I’d love to experience this all again and I’d come back for sure. I think I’m going to come back here. It’s a really relaxed life and so very nice.” Ahmad Fursam Khalifa, a Yemeni national and Sharjah resident, added: “I feel so very happy after this experience. Our forefathers did this in the past, now, and I’ve done it. “Everybody is going to the coffee shop or the mall nowadays. I said I’d do this camel trek to get experience of what our forefathers did and where they lived. “Insha’Allah (God willing), I hope to do this again. That is the plan anyway. I have already told the organisers that, if they do it again next year, they must put my name down first on the list. I like it that much.” Ibrahim Abdul Rahim, Director of Events at the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center, stated: “This year’s camel trek was different to the inaugural event in 2015 in so much as we had a lot of different nationalities with us. It was a different experience for them, which is one of our strategies at the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center, and they all came away really happy for having done it. We’ve taught them what it was like for our forefathers to live in this country in the olden days. They – and we – have learnt from this experience.” With plans already afoot to make the third edition of this ‘In the Footsteps of the Ancestors’ event even better and bigger next year, it seems there will be no shortage of takers keen to sample a refresher course in this eye-opening exploration of Emirati culture and heritage.

URBAN WOMAN

GO AU NATURAL WITH YOUR

MAKE UP

Full on glamour with false lashes, bronzer and red lipstick might be perfect for some occasions, but it’s not really suitable for everyday wear. Most people tend to favour a natural look when it comes to their daily makeup regime, it’s quick and easy to apply, and can also look a lot more professional.

T

he aim is to make it look like you’re not wearing any makeup at all, so people think that you naturally have blemish free skin. It’s easy to achieve a natural look with your make up and here are some tips on how to get it right.

Skincare Regime The key thing to a natural look is ensuring your skin is in good condition and this is usually achieved by sticking to a daily skincare regime; exfoliate regularly (but not daily) to avoid spots and blemishes. Also keep your eyebrows tidy but not overly plucked and keep on top of them so you just tweeze as you need. Natural Skin It’s best to go for a light foundation for everyday wear, while one with sun protection will also help to prevent sun damage to your skin. Make sure you use a colour as close to your natural skin tone as possible to avoid makeup lines and apply with a makeup sponge or your fingers. You could also go for a tinted moisturiser that is perfect for a natural look or you could even add moisturiser to your current foundation to create your own. Simple Cheeks You won’t usually need blusher if you’re using a light base, but if you like a little extra colour on your cheeks then avoid shades that are too dark. Use some bronzer if you are olive skinned or peachy pink if you are paler. Apply using a large brush in sweeping motions to prevent the buildup of colour and focus along the cheekbone. Bright Eyes If you want the minimalist look then clear mascara will separate and define your lashes perfectly, while a dark brown for fair skinned and black mascara for dark skinned

24

The Source

will also work. If you want to emphasise your eyes a little more add some soft eye pencil along the lashes at the outer corners of your eyes. Basic Lips A lip balm or a tinted lip-gloss is perfect for everyday use and will also help to moisturise them. For a little touch of colour, blend a dab of colour with your lip balm, as lipstick is a bit too much for day-to-day wear.

PROFESSIONAL SPORT FOR LOVE OR MONEY?

Two weeks ago another scandal rocked the world of international sport. ust in case you have been living under a rock or on the moon (Does Tim Peake read The Source?), here are some of the more recent cheating controversies. Firstly, the seemingly endless FIFA escapades in which United States and Swiss prosecutors continue to investigate large scale corruption at the very top of the game. In athletics, there is the ongoing investigation into Russian athletes who face a very real threat of expulsion from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games due to alleged doping infringements and potential cover-ups by the IAAF. Cricket is back in the news following the inclusion of Mohammed Amir, a convicted spot-fixer (bowling no-balls at pre-defined moments during games), in the Pakistan national side. This caused outrage and offers of resignation from Pakistani players. We even still have the after-effects of the Lance Armstrong Erythropoietin (EPO) confession affecting the 2015 Tour de France with accusations labeled at Chris Froome, the eventual winner.

At the 1904 Olympic Games, the gold medal for the marathon was stripped from Fred Lorz as he was found to have covered 11 miles by car!

In the same year (not a great year for sports cheats), Tour de France cyclist Hippolyte Acouturier was found to have attached fishing line to a car bumper at one end and a piece of cork at the other. He would then bite on the cork and be pulled along by the car with minimal effort. If anyone became suspicious, he would merely spit the cork out!

Sticking with the Tour de France, Michel Pollentier, in the 1978 event, was caught with a complex pump system underneath his shirt. This system stored a urine sample from his friend. The reason? When asked to produce a urine sample he could pump his right arm and fill a sample with his friend’s urine. Officials became suspicious when they noticed he appeared to be playing the bagpipes whilst urinating!

However, cheating in sport is nothing new and below are some of the more inventive and outlandish examples of cheating:

In the 1976 Olympics, a fencer by the name of Boris Onischenko rigged

the scoring system by attaching it to a trigger hidden on his sword. He would go for a shot and, even though he was nowhere near his opponent, he would press the trigger and it would give him a point. As Director of Sport at Brighton College, my colleagues and I work with young people who have a clear love of learning and an unparalleled enthusiasm for playing sport. I have yet to be asked the question: ‘So how much money will I get for being on the school team?’. So at what point do these professional athletes’ moral compasses switch from enjoyment to greed and how can we combat this when the stakes are so high in modern day, professional sport? Should we give statutory life-bans? Or perhaps hand out hefty fines? My personal opinion is that, whatever the punishment, there will always be those willing to cheat in order to win because their ability will never match their ambition. Our only hope is that future athletes are educated well enough to realise what it means to be a role model to so many around the globe and act as ambassadors for their sports.

Finally, when you are caught, never exclaim that it was a ‘mistake.’ Cheating is not a mistake: it is a choice. The choice is yours.

ROTANA Al Ain Goes

COVER STORY

Molto Italiano! I have been fortunate enough to have traveled to a great many places during the course of my life and one of my favourite countries of all time is without a doubt Italy. Beyond amazing beaches and picturesque landscapes that include every type of topography imaginable, Italy is the home of 70% of the planets historical art. And if this impressive list hasn’t yet piqued your interest, then I would suggest an encounter with the warm and most hospitable inhabitants of this European nation during meal time; there is really no better way imaginable to guarantee a sure-fire, lifetime love affair with Italy.

A

aaahhhh, the food is to die for so when I heard that the Al Ain Rotana was celebrating Italy by hosting an Italian Food Festival, I was over the moon with excitement. After all, what better way to showcase Italian cuisine than with an authentic Italian chef and that is just who is at the helm of one of our cities most impressive kitchens. Hailing from the small town of Bevagna, in the central part of the Italian province of Perugia, Chef Mirco Nocchetti brings not only a wealth of international culinary experience, he is the personification of the fresh simplicity that is the essence of flavours that have left their mark on discerning palates the world over. On the 27th of January, 2016 the first ‘Italian Food Festival’ came to Al Ain: a weeklong event that helped create a new generation of Italian food, sport and fashion lovers through food tastings, automotive test drives and unique cultural experiences. In the sumptuous surroundings of the Rotana,Al Ain, The Italian Food Festival featured the most authentic Italian blends, offering the hotel guests and citizens of the Garden City a true cultural experience. A star line-up of luxury Maserati cars, a variety of Duseja motorcycles like Aprilia, Vespa and Moto Guzzi and the glamour of Italian Fashion showcasing brands like Armani, Just Cavalli and Love Moschino, gave festival goers their best ensuring the passion for Italian culture came through. The restaurants invited all to a celebration of Italy’s culinary treasures with a delicious Italian Food Festival Buffet featuring pastas, seafood, lamb chops, and more. All the signature dishes from one of the most celebrated cuisines pampered appetites and left palates in a complete state of bliss. Diners at the Italian Food Festival were also given a chance to enter a lucky draw to win a flight to Italy courtesy of Etihad Airways. Choosing from more than 100 premium Italian wines, guests on opening night bathed in the true spirit of all things Italian that included music and among other delectable delights, an offering of exquisite risotto large enough to dive into! Day two ushered in an action packed test drive with one of the fastest luxury cars in the region, Maserati. And for the fashionistas, an extravagant display of top range Italian fashion brands adorned the Lobby. Thrilled participants also had an opportunity to ride along with a motorcycle of their choice courtesy of Duseja Motors. Since the Festival had a huge focus on food, there was no better way to end things than with a cooking demo led by the very talented Executive Chef, Mirco. Carlos Malliaroudakis, General Manager at Al Ain Rotana said: “The idea behind the Italian Food Festival was to offer our guests a unique and true Italian experience in the heart of the city.” The Festival excelled and very much succeeded in showcasing the strong relationship between Al Ain Rotana and Italy. A delegation from the Italian Embassy, Abu Dhabi inaugurated the event along with other VIP’s from across the city. 28

Screen Actors Guild Awards: 'Spotlight,' Leonardo DiCaprio Get Top Honors Kissing Emma Watson: The Adorable Struggle Of Actor Rupert Grint

Best actor went to Leonardo DiCaprio for "The Revenant," adding to the drum beat expected to culminate with the 41-year-old star's first Oscar. Other favorites cemented their front-runner status, as well. Brie Larson, the star of the captive motherson daughter drama "Room," won best actress. Alicia Vikander took best supporting actress for "The Danish Girl."

But supporting actor went to Idris Elba for "Beasts of No Nation." Elba was one of the most notable black actors overlooked by the Academy Awards, which instead fielded allwhite acting nominees. The SAG Awards, conversely, crowded its Shrine Auditorium stage in Los Angeles with a diverse group of winners including Queen Latifah and Viola Davis. By The Huffington Post

Surreal moments: they happen to all of us! Most of them, however, do not involve kissing famous and beautiful actor Emma Watson, who captured every millennial boy's heart as Hermione Granger in the "Harry Potter" films. But for Rupert Grint, that is, in fact, the case. While at an event at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Grint opened up about the particular strangeness of kissing his co-star. "I've known Emma since she was literally 9 years old and we had this very brothersister relationship," Grint said. "And it just felt very surreal. I have a memory of her face getting closer and closer. Like, 'Oh my God.' I can't really remember anything apart from that." Ah, onscreen romance. If only actors and characters weren't, like, different things, you know? Jim and Pam and Josh and Donna and Joey and Pacey would just be out there living happily somewhere, and the rest of us could restore our faith in love.

Sean Penn and Robin Wright’s Kids Team Up for First Fashion Campaign Together

Dylan Penn, 24, and Hopper Penn, 22, clearly inherited some good genes. The daughter and son of Sean Penn and Robin Wright star together in a style campaign for Fay’s upcoming Spring/Summer 2016 collection. The desert-themed shoot featuring the siblings was photographed in Palm Springs, California, by Michaelangelo di Battista and shows the brother-sister duo 30

sporting structured coats, patterned pants, and button-up shirts. Hopper even strikes a sultry pose atop a motorcycle that’s positioned in front of what appears to be an abandoned rest stop. Though this is the first time Dylan and Hopper have appeared together in a fashion spread, it’s certainly not the first time either one of them has been in front of the camera.

Oculus VR Brings A New Reality To The Gaming Industry

GoPro

Integrates With

Periscope Action camera maker GoPro is integrating with Periscope, the livestreaming app from Twitter. Owners of the GoPro HERO4 cameras will be able to broadcast their adventures directly to Periscope. As soon as the GoPro is paired to an iPhone, it will recognize the Periscope app and let users record and share their surroundings with a live audience. (The GoPro will still be able to record the videos for later viewings).

After walking the floor of the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, many gaming industry participants saw the virtual reality (VR) writing on the wall for the first time — and in a very realistic way. Immersive Virtual Reality (VR) gaming has arrived, or gotten extremely close, with the official ship date for the Oculus Rift VR viewer set for March 28 and current preorder acceptance now taking place. Some issues remain in the technology and user experience, not to mention the price

point. However, barring a major misstep by the Oculus unit of Facebook, none of these remain permanent obstacles to prevent a long-term VR trend from taking effect in 2016 (according to a January 2016 report from SUPERDATA forecasting an install base of about 38 million VR gaming consumers by the end of the year and a July 2015 Business Insider estimate of VR headset shipments growing at a 99 percent CAGR between 2015 and 2020, reaching $30 billion by that end date).

Suggestion Glitch Crashes Safari Browser

The cameras, which are popular with surfers and skiers, also enabled broadcasting on Periscope-competitor Meerkat last year. And GoPro has a product called the HEROCast, a wireless transmitter geared towards professional broadcasters. Twitter recently announced that it is integrating Periscope into user’s Twitter feeds. It’s unclear how many of Periscope’s 10 million accounts are active, but the company claims that more than 40 years of video is watched on Periscope each day. Livestreaming has become a hit with teens, as apps like YouNow continue to gain traction. YouTube and Facebook have also introduced livestreaming, in an effort to capture this growing audience. Both Twitter and GoPro are at a crossroads and the companies are hoping that capitalizing on the livestreaming space will attract some new fans. Slowed user growth meant that Twitter stock posted a record low of $17.02 on Monday, following the departures of several top executives. GoPro stock also hit a rough spot this month when the company announced layoffs.

Apple's Safari browser has been crashing on Macs and iOS devices when users launch a search through its address bar, according to reports that surfaced Wednesday. OS X and iOS users worldwide have been affected, according to The Verge, which confirmed the problem on several iOS devices and at least one OS X machine. One of the first mentions of the glitch was a tweet by app developer Phillip Caudell, who asked if anyone else's Safari browser on the

Mac mysteriously stopped working. Disabling the "include search engine suggestions" fixed the problem, Caudell later tweeted. The problem affected English, French and German language versions of Safari but not the Dutch version, according to developer Steve Troughton-Smith. Further, iOS 7 and earlier versions weren't affected. Apple reportedly has fixed the problem. The Source

MY WORLD

ECUADOR through artists' eyes Mention South America, and most travelers envision the mysterious Amazon, the majestic Andes, the unmatched Galapagos Islands and the magnificent Pacific beaches. What many don't know is you can enjoy these experiences and more, conveniently packaged in a country roughly the size of Colorado - Ecuador.

artists from the USA, Canada, UK and Germany discovered just that as part of the Feel Again Project, led by the Ministry of Tourism of Ecuador. The project invited international teams of artists to find inspiration in the diverse landscapes of Ecuador's four main climatic regions - the Amazon, the Andes, the Galapagos Islands and the Pacific Coast. "The amount of different landscapes and microclimates in such a small area really surprised me; the variation is quite staggering," says Team UK artist, Conor MacNeill. "There's so much to do across a manageable amount of landmass." THE AMAZON Ecuador is one of the most biodiverse countries on the planet, as reflected in the famed Amazon basin. The lush landscape offers visitors a chance to encounter an exotic range of land, water and arboreal life, including pigmy marmosets, two-toed sloths, scarlett macaws, pink river dolphins, piranha and jaguars. For Team UK artists Jason and Keiko Hindley, the greatest inspiration came from the people working to preserve that biodiversity - particularly the indigenous Kichwa A単angu community, which runs the Napo Wildlife Centre. The Centre is a great destination for families, they say, with so much to see and do, and guides that adjust treks accordingly for different ages and fitness levels. THE ANDES Ecuador's Andes region offers awe-inspiring highlands, dramatic valleys, colonial towns and breathtaking views. Team Germany members Steve Hanisch, Rocket & Wink, and Michelle Phillips and Johannes Conrad of Studio Yukiko recommend visitors immerse themselves in the colors of the region. Their picks for the region's most inspirational experiences are riding the luxurious Tren Crucero, a bright red, four-coach train that winds its way through the mountains, and taking a moment to just breathe while overlooking the still blue waters in the Quilotoa volcanic crater, more than 12,800 feet above sea level. THE GALAPAGOS The Galapagos Islands are a living museum of evolution. The region includes 13 major islands, each with unique offerings. For Team USA artist Scott Pommier, uninhabited Espa単ola Island was the true stand out. "We saw such incredible animals at such proximity," he says. "You're greeted by sea lions, brightly colored crabs and lava lizards all over the shore. You have to step over marine iguanas to make your way down the trail to one of the only places you can see the mating dance of the waved albatross. On the way there, you pass hooded and blue-footed boobies." THE PACIFIC COAST Forest, mangroves and beaches line Ecuador's picturesque Pacific Coast. Here, travelers can catch a wave at more than 50 beaches, try the region's Africaninfluenced, seafood-based cuisine or sample chocolate made from locally grown cocoa, considered the world's best. Team Canada artists Rick Leong, Jesse Louttit and Jeff Bartlett each came away with unforgettable experiences to inspire their art. Louttit and Bartlett's must-do lists include boating with dolphins, exploring the coastal town of Monta単ita, visiting a cocoa plantation and, of course, trying the chocolate. "I think that the coast can offer different things to different kinds of travelers," Leong says. "The luxury traveler will find places to relax and try amazing cuisine, and the budget traveler can head to Monta単ita to surf and hang out. I think it's ideal for adventurers, who want to explore and discover." SEASONS EXHIBITION FEB 04 - MAR 02, 2016 N2N GALLERY AT NATION TOWERS GALLERIA, ABU DHABI Igor Shipilin, the acclaimed artist whose works are on display in the most prestigious museum of Russia – the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, is back to Abu Dhabi. One year later, after his first successful solo exhibition ‘Life by the Sea’ brought to Abu Dhabi by N2N Gallery, Igor Shipilin is back in town with a new show: “Seasons”. Showing a collection of 27 oil paintings, ‘Seasons’ is a story of incommensurable love towards Igor Shipilin’s beloved Crimea. A story that seems to have no end and that takes inexhaustible shapes and shades on the artist’s canvas. ‘Seasons’ is like a journey that carries the viewer through the soft light of the Crimean spring, through the fragrant and bright summer followed by the rich and colorful autumn, ending with the mild melancholic Crimean winter. Igor Shipilin’s art parades natural and historical attractions as traditionally portrayed by artists from different eras, but at a first glimpse inconspicuous areas with a leisurely pace of life in small towns. These are the places where the artist spent his childhood and youth, those places where you always want to go back to reflect and stop the running of time, to draw strength and inspiration in healing the soul with the simplicity of the usual life and environment - that's the world of the works of Shipilin.
