A mother is irreplaceable and each and every one of our stories begins with hers. It is on this note that I will share a tale sure to remind you of how important it is to embrace our author as often as we can, while we are able. A man stopped at a flower shop to order some flowers to be wired to his mother who lived two hundred miles away. As he got out of his car he noticed a young girl

sitting on the curb sobbing. He asked her what was wrong and she replied, "I wanted to buy a red rose for my mother. But I only have seventy-five cents, and a rose costs two dollars." The man smiled and said, "Come on in with me. I'll buy you a rose." He bought the little girl her rose and ordered his own mother's flowers. As they were leaving he offered the girl a ride home. She said, "Yes, please! You can take me to my mother." She directed him to a cemetery, where she placed the rose on a freshly dug grave. The man returned to the flower shop, canceled the wire order, picked up a bouquet and drove the two hundred miles to his mother's house. If you are among the truly blessed and still have your mother, be like the gentleman in the story. Seize every opportunity to spend with your mother and continue adding chapters to a book that will be read over and over again, ensuring that even in her absence, there will never be an unfulfilled void. Happy Mother’s Day!

We’ve seen a lot of unlikely animals friendships here at Bored Panda. Dogs and elephants. Cats and foxes. Even giraffes and ostriches. However, nothing comes close to seeing an American black bear, an African lion and a Bengal tiger living together in harmony. That one really takes some beating. Baloo the bear, Leo the lion and Shere Khan the tiger have spent the last 15 years peacefully coexisting at Noah’s Ark Animal

Shelter in Georgia. Known as the BLT, they were rescued in 2001 from the basement of a house in Atlanta during a police drug raid. They were kept in the basement in terrible conditions, and Baloo had to have surgery to remove an ingrowing harness that hadn’t been adjusted as he’d grown. That was the only time the trio have ever been separated however, and they’ve spent every happy day together since.

RAK fishermen told to 'fix' fish prices

A flyer with the fish prices is put up at the fish market on a daily basis to enlighten customers and curb illegal practices, according to a senior official. Residents now do not have to worry about sudden and unreasonable hikes in fish prices anymore. The Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) Fishermen Cooperative Society has been asked now to fix the rates. A flyer with the fish prices is put up at the fish market on a daily basis to enlighten customers and curb illegal practices, according to a senior official. Khalifa Saif Al Muhairi, chairman of the RAK Fishermen Cooperative Society, over 10 tonnes of different types of fish are brought to the market daily. "Weekends see bigger amounts, however." In general, prices have stabilised by 75 per cent in the fish market here, he added. "A kilogramme of Hamoor fish costs Dh40 to Dh50 while a big Kakab fish was sold against Dh140 to Dh150 per piece." A small Kabkab fish costs Dh125 whereas a Khabbat fish stands at Dh80 per piece, he elaborated. "A kilogramme of Kanaad fish costs Dh40 to Dh45, Al Muhairi stated." "It is a timely decision to put an end to malpractices of greedy fish traders who unreasonably increase prices," said Mohammed Hazem, an Egyptian customer at the Dahan area, RAK. The same was reiterated

by Mohammed Qassim, a Sudanese. "Fish traders are out of control and quote whatever price they wish for." However, fish trader Mohammed Ansar disagreed with the decision. "Fish transactions are based on supply and demand and cannot be fixed by anyone other than the traders themselves." "How is it possible to fix the price of different quality and size of fish of the same type?" asked fish trader Nasser Afzal. Source: Al Jazeera

Uae Residents In The Dark About Credit Card Interest Rates, Survey Finds

“Innovation”

Study by UAE-based comparison group compareit4me.com reveals credit card interest rates in the UAE are misunderstood Nearly two thirds of credit card holders in the UAE are unaware of the interest rate attached to their credit card, according to a survey by the Middle East’s leading finance comparison group, compareit4me.com. The survey, which questioned participants across the UAE on a selection of personal financial products, found that 63 per cent of credit card holders do not know the interest rate attached to their plastic. “Credit cards are big business in the UAE, with about 5.9 million debit and credit cards in circulation and spending on plastic rising year-onyear,” says Jon Richards, CEO of the compareit4me Group. “However, like any form of debt, credit cards need to be managed responsibly. To discover that nearly two thirds of credit card holders do not know the interest rate attached to them is alarming.” compareit4me, which allows consumers to compare cards and products from the leading banks in the UAE, makes searching for credit cards easier by aggregating the newest, most competitive credit cards in a few simple clicks. “By listing the credit cards in this way, our visitors can scan the options easily without being overwhelmed by numbers,” explains Richards. “The interest rates are clearly highlighted, however, if individual cardholders are unsure of the rates, contact the respective bank and request more information. Understanding the terms and conditions is vital to your financial health.” The survey also found that 28 per cent of credit cardholders do not know how missing a credit card payment would impact their chances of getting a loan in the future. “With the launch of Al Etihad Credit Bureau, every aspect of your financial history is tracked and can be analysed by banks,” says Richards. “Missing monthly payments or bouncing cheques are some of the things logged on your credit report and can affect your future ability to access finance such as a loan, another credit card or even a mortgage. Again, I urge credit card users to swipe them responsibly – the alternative is excessive monthly payments that can quickly become unmanageable.”

ABZ (Abdullah Bin Al Zubair) Private School, a British Curriculum School, held a workshop at the Rotana Hotel in Al Ain. The workshop was entitled “How to Improve Innovation in Students’ Personality and Intellect”. This workshop was partnered by Al Khwarzmi College and Madar Medical Center (MMC). Many parents, teachers, and other sectors of the UAE community (around 150 attendees) participated in the workshop through hands-on activities and interactive discussions with Mrs. Suha Emam, Al Kwarzmi representative, who conducted the session. Mrs. Suha shared ideas in line with innovative thinking and creativity as well as daily life problem solving. These skills need to be adapted to a 21st century lifestyle at school, work and at home. During the workshop, Mrs. Suha said, “Our skills and mode of thinking must evolve and move away from our traditionally familiar comfort zone. We must employ innovation better suited and adapted to the creative and ever changing world we live in and thereby better prepare our children for their exciting future!” In his speech, Mr. H. Fatih Adak, ABZ Pvt. School principal, welcomed the attendees and assured them that the Journey of Discovery and Innovation, inspired by the UAE leaders, is paramount for both educators and students at ABZ Pvt. School. He also shared his vision, as a principal, with the audience. “Our vision involves planting the UAE moral and cultural heritage in students’ personalities to enrich their UAE identity while adapting to 21st century learning, problem solving and critical and innovative thinking. In this way they can achieve the progress, competence and excellence necessary to succeed at school, university and in the community. “ The work shop was a huge success enjoyed by all and ABZ was proud to extend their appreciation to the attendees, partners and sponsors for their support.

THE TIMES, THEY ARE

A-BLOWIN’ IN THE WIND

T

he breeze ain’t good merely because it dries my washing. It has played a pivotal (though generally unacknowledged) role in human history, and will do so again.

In 1492 Columbus sailed smack-bang into the Bahamas. The historical significance of the moment was much greater than the deed itself. As far as sailing went, traveling five weeks across an open sea wasn’t much chop. And the great man’s geography was off. The doofus thought he’d landed in Japan! Even an averagely observant parrot would have noticed that the natives didn’t slurp when they ate their noodles. Perhaps that’s why he killed them all off. They knew his shame. Was Columbus so vain he committed genocide to save himself from public embarrassment? I think we all know the answer to that . . .. He was certainly an ego-maniac, claiming for himself the prize for being first to sight land when, in fact, a sailor named Rodrigo de Triana had hooked that lucrative fish. History remembers Rodrigo as the only man to have been shafted worse than Pete Best. Columbus wasn’t even the first European

12

The Source

to reach to the New World. In addition to the Vikings, the fisherman of Bristol knew the American coast well, having harvested the cod of the Grand Banks for donkey’s. Unlike Columbus, they kept the precious resource quiet, hoarding it for themselves. So Columbus gets the credit because of what followed in his wake-and I’m not talking about yer usual icons of Americanic trumpeting such as the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights or gun deaths. No, the most significant consequences of Columbus’s voyage sprung from his discovery of the trade winds. These bands of prevailing breeze circle the earth from East to West astride the equator. This was the power Columbus harnessed to whisk the Santa Maria from Africa across the Atlantic. He also learned that at higher latitudes the winds blow the opposite way, and so could whisk him home again. Thus the Portugese established a triangular commercial route: Europeans to Africa, misery to America and riches to Europe. It was all about cash. Good for some, disaster for many, but in either case the harnessing of the trade winds tipped the balance of economic power in favor of Europe. And (as always) with economic power came political power.

By AJ_Gray

As it was, so it is, and now the world is on the cusp of wind-driven revolution once more. In Europe, wind now generates more power than hydro, and the gap to coal and gas is closing fast. In Denmark, wind supplies 42 percent of all electricity, the highest percentage of any country. They’ll reach 50 percent by 2020 and 84 percent by 2035. The Scots are racing them neck and neck. This January, wind provided almost half of all electricity on the Scottish national grid. For twenty-two days in the month, wind alone generated enough electricity to supply every home in the country. Over in Norway, they’re building Europe’s largest onshore wind farm, a 1GW network to deliver 3.4TWh of power each year. And in Sweden, the government has announced plans to become fully reliant on renewable energy within thirty years. The idea is to cut domestic emissions by 85 percent and offset the remainder by investing in energy projects abroad. The technology to be free of fossil fuels is out there. At the moment, the economy needed to achieve that does not exist. But history has shown that the harnessing of wind has driven great economic change before, and may do the same again.

FAMILY

WHY MOTHERS ARE THE MOST PRODUCTIVE MEMBERS OF SOCIETY Even with the best of intentions, we sometimes view the importance of mothers in very narrow terms. We know they love us, provide us with unconditional support, and are always there when we need them. However, we also occasionally forget just how meaningful they are to society. What Mothers Mean To Society In terms of how mothers impact the world, there are two levels you are going to want to consider. The first is on the emotional level. The second would be on the rational level, which involves social and economic impacts. With all of those things, keep in mind the following: •

14

They have inspired modern feminism: While the battle for inclusionary feminism continues, there is no question that the current concept of feminism owes a massive debt to our mothers. After all, these were the women who worked within and served to define the Women’s Movement of the 1960’s and 1970’s. They are contributing to greater and greater portions of the workplace: On a social/economic level, there is no question that mothers are bringing a lot to the table, even if the wage gap continues to be problematic. From 1975 to 2013, the number of mothers in the workplace rose from 47.4% to 70.3%.

The Source

Perhaps even more extraordinary, more than half of the working mothers in the United States are doing so while raising a child under the age of one. •

Mothers are in all aspects of our lives: While there is still a great deal of work that needs to be done, in terms of true equality, there is no question that mothers exist in more aspects of society than ever before. Mothers now work within high levels of government, within high levels of the judicial system, and within high levels of the corporate world.

Mothers shape individuals: Even in this day and age, mothers continue to develop stronger and deeper bonds with their children than with anyone else. This means that mothers continue to be the ones who largely shape the perceptions and behaviors of their children.

The numbers are getting better: The number of mothers in such roles as university presidents and female CEOs is increasing all the time.

These are just a few of the ways in which mothers positively impact our lives and society. Think about your own mother, and then consider everything she has ever taught you. You can then apply that to the decisions you’ve made throughout the course of your life.

While Mother’s Day in the UAE has arrived, it may be celebrated on a different day depending on your particular origin and we encourage you to take advantage of the current celebration and as many others as possible to do something special for your mother; after all, there can never be too many occasions to honour the woman who helped make your world a better place!

"TRAIL HAWK"

BLAZING THE AT Desert Hawk The other day I met Terry, one of those oldfashioned English photographers with a ponytail, a paunch and an East-London accent, a journalistic sage brimming with tips on things like how to make the most out of a buffet by starting with the desserts. ‘Uvverwise, there’s never any left by the time ya get to ‘em, ay?’ Indeed. He was a gear-head (as am I), keeping his cameras in military-grade waterproof cases made by Pelican. They’d endured three days submerged in the northern floods without admitting a drop. That made him and me, both, very happy. Terry’s advice on life was simple. Do your job, earn a few bob and use military-grade equipment.

FUNATIC 2016

Which brings us to Jeep. We are all familiar with the WWII American utility vehicle of functional design and legendary off-road ability. The modern-day version of the company believes that every one of its current models retains a little bit of that original. You could say it’s the Jeep DNA. But I’m not sure DNA is the best metaphor here. DNA gets eaten. DNA goes extinct. I don’t want Jeep DNA in my car. I want Jeep engineering-designed in the studio, tested in the lab and indisputably proven in the offroad arena. And that ain’t all I want. I’m a family man, and the vehicle for me needs to handle a highway as well as it handles a hill. Yeah, I want rugged and powerful, but I don’t want it so that it scares the wife and kids. It’s gotta be sensible. And I’m not alone. A lot of people want something similar, particularly in the UAE with its mix of freeway-smooth streets and accessible four-by-four fun.

A week or so back, my family trooped off to the annual Jeep FUNatic event. After 2 successful previous years, the 3rd annual installment promised to be the mother of all dune bashing revelry, with more than 110 vehicles participating in an action packed day that included activities beyond the obvious for the entire family. Our priority was to find out whether the off-road company makes a vehicle that successfully combines familyfriendliness with engineering chops. In short, the answer was ‘Yes.’ As we chowed down on Tim Horton’s coffee and croissants, Kasia and Jameel of Eastern Motors fixed us up with a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk 3.2L V6 with a true 4x4 transmission (that means low-gearing). Then we hit the highway. The V6 whisked us up to cruising speed with a pleasing exhaust note that hinted at sportiness while dodging dangerous. It felt good. At 125km/h it was all buttery richness. Smooth. On the run to Zaman Lawal Heritage

Village the family checked out the cabin. Our Trailhawk had leather, plenty of places to stash things, media options galore, an electronic tailgate and an unexpectedly high rear seat which meant the kids could’ve seen out the windows even if they hadn’t been in their boosters. Smart. And then it was time to party. We hooked up with the team from Abu Dhabi 4x4 and took off into the desert. Now was the Trailhawk’s chance to show if it indeed possessed any of that Jeep off-road flair. In short, the answer was “Yeeehah!” We motored up hill and down dune over a mix of hard sand, soft sand and gravel, and I did not experience even one moment’s trouble. Sweet. Now, admittedly, we weren't tackling the toughest terrain in the country. But Jeep aren't claiming that the Trailhawk is built for that. No, if you want to go the whole off-road hog, the Wrangler is your beast. The Trailhawk is a family vehicle with betterthan-capable off-road ability. If you’re a family man with an adventurous spirit but you’re not into risk-taking, then Jeep has engineered the car for you.

AL MAJLIS

A VIRTUAL VIRTUOSO MEET OUR VERY OWN

HANNAH HALL I may well be an enthused individual, heavily favouring my creative side but when it comes to organizational skills and proper time management, I have been known to fall apart at the seams. Needless to say, after discovering the talents of a certain dynamic woman who makes her home right here in the Garden City, I was excited to introduce and share the invaluable services on offer courtesy of an entrepreneur certain to benefit and ultimately make a huge difference in your organizations efficiency. Originating from England, Hannah has lived and worked in a variety of countries including Australia and Qatar, since becoming a Virtual Assistant in 2010. Hannah now runs My PA For A Day, a niche company providing off-site, secretarial and marketing support, to start-up businesses right here in Al Ain!

What is a Virtual Assistant? A VA provides off-site, business support services such as: executive/administrative assistance, social media management, bookkeeping, event management, website administration and content writing, to name but a few! What did you do for a living before you became a Virtual Assistant? I was the marketing manager at a prominent publishing house in Sydney. Later, I relocated to Cardiff to head the marketing department for a global organisation that investigated business information for leading law firms. Did you just leave your job or start VA-ing gradually? The transition was gradual and lasted a year. After this I jumped in feet first! The thrill of finally being able to control my own day and work with businesses that I was 22

The Source

passionate about was incentive enough to take the plunge.

doing the work that inspires them and keeps them moving forward.

Who was your first client? My first client was Louis Parsons, Artist in Residence at The Four Seasons Kuda Huraa in The Maldives. He came to me via a website referral and I’m delighted to still have him as a client after 6 years.

What’s the hardest thing about being a VA? Switching off! I am so grateful for being able to live this lifestyle that I’m constantly on the look out for other networking opportunities and marketing topics. Al Ain is full of exceptionally creative individuals who are doing amazing things and dreaming big.

Do you have a niche? Yes, I now personally specialise in working with creative individuals in the UAE, who are running small businesses and require online marketing and personal assistant support. What’s the best thing about being a VA? I love meeting and helping other entrepreneurs focus on their core business strategies, instead of the work they find time consuming and tedious. I am passionate about enabling clients to spend more time

How virtual are you? 90% of my time is spent working from a remote location (I confess to loving the coffee and quiet of La Brioche at Souk Extra). I do prefer meeting new clients face to face if possible, in order to establish a connection with them. I also offer on-site support to those clients who need it. How do you find your clients? The majority of clients are either word of

mouth referrals or people I have met through networking. A percentage of enquiries are a result of social media marketing. How do you manage your personal/work life balance? My work/life balance can be a challenge. Freelance work is not consistent and I have a natural tendency to take on more than a working day permits. Then there is the marketing side of my business, which is so important, and an area that I often focus on in my own private time. Digital detox is very important to me as it’s far too easy to become consumed with social media 24 hours a day. My phone and laptop are switched off at a specific time every evening to ensure down time to recharge my batteries. How do you manage your clients and their expectations? Before taking on a new client, I schedule an initial welcome call in which I discuss requirements, needs and expectations. Then, if possible, arrange a meeting to discuss in detail the outcome and timeframes before commencing the work. What technology, websites, or apps are invaluable to your working life?

I’m a social media addict and have a habit of installing more apps than I need. For bookkeeping I’m a huge fan of Wave. Dropbox and Google Docs make file transfers and sharing super easy and Evernote is my go to on-line notebook. My content marketing favourites are Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, with Skype and LinkedIn being my ‘go to’ sites for business connections. Why should businesses consider hiring a Virtual Assistant? Hiring a Virtual Assistant is first and foremost cost-effective. Clients only pay for the work they need, when they need it, and have no additional office space or equipment to provide. I meet overworked business owners all the time and I’m amazed at how few have tried using a virtual assistant to reduce their workload. Without a doubt using a VA is the best way to actually get your life back without your business grinding to a halt. Running a family is hard work -- holding down a job, paying bills, taking care of household needs, preparing meals and chauffeuring children to their various activities can be energysapping. Although you already know your kids love you, you can boost your cool factor by getting to know more about their genuine interests. The coolest dads are self-confident, though, so don’t get overly caught up in establishing your hipster credentials. Be confident, have fun and know that fatherly coolness will follow. •

Make time for your kids. There’s nothing less cool than always being too busy for your children. When your children want to share a funny story, set your smartphone aside and actively listen. They’ll be thrilled if you genuinely laugh. If you see the kids practicing headstands or cartwheels in the backyard, turn the TV off and go try a few gymnastics moves yourself. When you spontaneously participate in their lives on their terms, rather than dictating formal activities, you get to be the cool dad.

Take turns making choices with your kids. Let them pick a movie, however silly or mind-numbingly angsty, and watch it with them. Be interested in watching the YouTube clips they find online or listening to their favorite playlist in the car. Then share your preferences, too. Regardless of how they feel about your music or favorite movies, you’ll gain credibility and coolness by demonstrating that you respect their sense of style and artistic choices and have some of your own.

Embrace your uncoolness. It sends a powerful message to your kids about self-confidence, self-acceptance and the real meaning of “cool” when they see that you can laugh at your idiosyncrasies. If you can’t stay up past 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve or have been known to wear tropical-print board shorts to the beach, make a joke about being a dork so that your kids learn not to be embarrassed for being themselves.

Communicate with your partner about sharing cool activities. If your partner is usually the parent to take the kids to the water park in the summer, ask if you can share these tasks. Both parents can share taking your children on hikes, stopping for ice cream, checking out a car show, or granting permission for play dates and slumber parties so that kids associate fun, spontaneity and coolness with dad, too.

Live your life. Constantly trying to impress your kids can be counterproductive. Don’t try too hard; instead, maintain positive relationships with your friends and your partner. When your kids see you playing the guitar, learning how to surf, grilling fresh-caught fish or goofing around in the pool, they see that you enjoy your life and have interests outside their own. Although you always want to emphasize that they are your priority, letting them see other aspects of your personality will reinforce that you’re an individual with some pretty cool experiences under your belt.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

UNHCR SPECIAL ENVOY, ANGELINA JOLIE PITT

SPEAKS TO PRESS IN REFUGEE SETTLEMENT, FAYDA LEBANON

Good morning, I am pleased to be back in Lebanon today. I want to thank the Lebanese people for helping to save the lives of over 1 million Syrians. It is not easy for a country to take in the equivalent of a quarter of its own population in refugees. But for as much as it is a responsibility, I hope you are aware of the message it sends about the values and character and spirit of the Lebanese people. You are setting an example to the world of generosity, humanity, resilience and solidarity. On behalf of UNHCR, and on my own behalf, shukran, thank you. We should never forget that for all the focus on the refugee situation in Europe at this time, the greatest pressure is still being felt in the Middle East and North Africa, as it has for

each of the last five years. There are 4.8 million Syrian refugees in this region, and 6.5 million people displaced inside Syria. On this day, the 5th anniversary of the Syria conflict, that is where I had hoped I would be: in Syria, helping UNHCR with returns, and watching families I have come to know be able to go home. It is tragic and shameful that we seem to be so far from that point. Every Syrian refugee I have spoken to on this visit, without exception, talked of their desire to return home when the war is over and it is safe for them to do so – not with resignation, but with the light in their eyes of people dreaming of being reunited with the country that they love. I have seen on this visit just how desperate the struggle to survive now is for these families. After five years of exile, any savings they had, have been exhausted. Many who started out living in apartments now cluster in abandoned shopping centres, or informal tented settlements, sinking deeper into debt. The number of refugees in Lebanon living below the minimum threshold for survival– unable to afford the food and shelter they need to stay alive - has doubled in the last two years, in a country where 79% of all Syrian

refugees are women and children. We have to understand the fundamental realities that are driving the global refugee crisis - which is the product not just of the Syria war, but of decades of open-ended conflicts or persecution: in Myanmar, Mali, the Central African Republic, the DRC, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Iraq, Syria. I could go on. The number of refugees is now higher than the last time we had a World War. We are at an exceptionally difficult moment internationally, when the consequences of the refugee crisis seem to be outstripping our will and capacity and even our courage to respond to it. In conventional times of war, people who are displaced go to more stable areas, or to neighboring countries for sanctuary, or are provided for in refugee camps until it is safe to go home. In exceptional circumstances some are sent abroad for resettlement or asylum. But with 60 million people displaced, as there are today, there is no way that the governments of the world – no matter how rich or willing they are - can prop up the UN enough to care for all these people permanently and expect that to address the problem. We cannot manage the world through aid relief in the place of diplomacy and political

solutions. We cannot discuss this as if it were a problem confined to the situation of tens of thousands of refugees in Europe. We cannot improve this reality by partial responses, by responding to some crises and not others, or by helping some refugees and not others – for instance, by excluding Afghan refugees, among other groups - or by making a distinction between refugees on grounds of religion. The result would be more chaos, more injustice and insecurity, and ultimately more conflict, and more refugees. We have to focus on the absolute root causes, and that takes a certain amount of courage and leadership. And in my view, leadership in this situation is about doing more than simply protecting your borders or simply putting forward more aid, it means taking decisions to ensure we are not heading towards an even greater refugee crisis in the future. That is why, as heartbreaking and angering it is to hear the individual stories of the refugees, it is not a time for emotion. It is a time for reason and calm and foresight. I want to be clear that I understand that people in many different countries have fears about the refugee situation. They are worried about the impact on their communities, livelihoods and security if they accept refugees into their countries. It is not wrong to feel unsettled faced by a crisis of such complexity and such magnitude. But we must not let fears get the better of us. We must not let fear stand in the way of an

effective response that is in our long-term interests. My plea today is that we need governments around the world to show leadership: to analyse the situation and understand exactly what their country can do, how many refugees they can assist and how, in which particular communities and to what timeframe; to explain this to their citizens and address fears - based not on emotion but on a measured assessment of what can and must be done to share the responsibility and get on top of this situation. That starts with having a very robust asylum procedure to be able to hear the needs of the desperate families to identify who is most vulnerable and who has a genuine refugee claim – processes that UNHCR has been supporting governments to carry out for decades. I appeal to all governments to uphold the UN Convention on Refugees and basic human rights law, because it is both necessary and possible to protect people fleeing persecution and death and protect citizens at home. It should not be reduced to a choice between one or the other. The reason we have laws and binding international agreements is precisely because of the temptation to deviate from them in times of pressure. We know from recent history that when we depart from fundamental laws and principles we only create worse problems for the future.

I spent time this morning with a mother who was paralysed after being shot by a sniper's rifle in a besieged area of Syria. She lies in one room, where she lives with her whole family, in a small, cold, makeshift settlement here in the Bekaa Valley. Never once during our discussion did she ask for anything, did she stop smiling, or talk of anything other than her desire for her children to have the chance to go to school and have a better life. When I saw her beautiful smile, and her dedicated husband and children looking after her, I was in awe of them. They are heroes to me. And I ask myself, what have we come to when such survivors are made to feel like beggars? We can do the right thing by refugees and build a more secure international environment. We can build order out of chaos. In my view it comes down to understanding the law, choosing not to be afraid, and showing political will. For the sake of the people of Syria, and for all the refugees around the world looking desperately to the international community to provide solutions, I hope we will do this. And I also hope that the 15th of March next year will finally herald a Syria at peace, and will be the beginning of a time of returns so that these refugees are able to fulfil their desire to go home. Thank you very much

SHEIKH HAMDAN BIN MOHAMMED AL MAKTOUM ATTENDS THE NINTH SALUKI CHAMPIONSHIP CROWN PRINCE OF DUBAI ATTENDS THE SALUKI CHAMPIONSHIP oldest-known breeds of domesticated dog in the entire world – and their owners from all across the GCC and beyond over the years, with everyone only too keen to display their greyhounds’ hunting skills.

T

he ninth edition of the prestigious Saluki Championship took place on Sunday here in the Al Marmoum area of Dubai, where His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, watched on as an interested observer. This event, which is organized and supervised by the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center (HHC), has regularly attracted Arabian Salukis – one of the

28

The Source

There were four races in total – two for female Salukis (amateur/general public and professional) and two for males (amateur/ general public and professional) with a total of 190 participations. The professional category was run over one kilometre, whereas the amateur classification was held over 2.5km. Saluki hunting is widely regarded as the most lucrative and prestigious pastime among all of the traditional culture and heritage pursuits and such a standing has drawn multinational representation from international destinations as far afield as Australia, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa and Uruguay in recent times.

Finland’s Laura Rodriguez owns four Salukis and she was in attendance purely to photograph her friends’ dogs running in the respective races. “I love that Salukis run fast and that they’re an old breed,” she explained. “They’re quite independent and naughty, but very loving at the same time. I just really like them; they’re my breed of dog. Salukis are not a terribly fashionable breed in Europe, but there are still quite a lot of them all the same. Most Saluki owners there are very active at dog shows and the like.” Fellow Scandinavian Johan Forsman, of Sweden, released a dog at the start line of the very first run and clearly thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the day overall. “I was here for the Saluki Championship last year and it’s always great fun seeing the dogs racing and what the tradition is all about here,” admitted the veterinarian, who works with falcons here in the emirate. “I like

to soak up the atmosphere here and it’s just exciting, so I usually come down here with some friends and have a good time. “I’ve learnt a lot about Emirati culture and heritage in my two and a half years here. I love the many different aspects of international culture, so experiences like this one definitely enhances my personal experience here in Dubai. A lot of people come to Dubai and experience just the city side of things. I think it’s really important to experience the traditional side and being out in the desert as well,” he added. Sunday’s event was attended by His Excellency Abdullah Hamdan bin Dalmook, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center (HHC). He and other senior members from HHC will have come away from it understandably buoyed by the participation

numbers on the day itself to boot. Ahmed Saif Al Zafin, the Head of the Committee for the Saluki Championship, commented: “We’ve noticed that the interest in Salukis in on the increase and – consequently – the number of participants at this championship is growing year on year. We’re looking for quality rather than quantity though, so we keep close tabs on the overall attendance figures.” Souad Ibrahim Darwish, the Director of Championships at the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center, said: “Owners are becoming more and more educated about Salukis and the very latest methods to train them. The speeds are getting progressively higher as a result and that doesn’t just simply happen overnight. It’s a long process that takes a lot of effort and research into the best breeds of dog.

The size of the dog plays a big part as that’s the game changer.” Sheikh Almur bin Maktoum Al Maktoum said: “the Saluki Championship has evolved over the years in the UAE thanks to its growing popularity and I believe it will witness more developments in the future. Hunting with salukis was one of the main sources of living in this region and in addition to horses and camels, the saluki is one of the historical symbols of this part of the world. With the aim of sustaining this heritage, it’s important that such events are held, to maintain the popularity of this tradition. We thank the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Centre for organising such a huge championship that has become an attraction for young people who play a major role in spreading and sustaining our heritage." Adolf Hitler (Or Sarah Silverman) Stops By 'Conan' To Talk About Donald Trump

Blake Shelton Rules the Nickelodeon's 2016 Kids' Choice Awards It was a blast from the not so pleasant past when Sarah Silverman stopped by Conan as Adolf Hitler. The comedian weighed in on the comparisons between the Nazi leader and current Republican Presidential frontrunner Donald Trump. Trump has received criticism for his vicious dialogue and the “loyalty pledge” at rallies which bears a striking resemblance to Hitler’s Nazi salute. “Don’t get me wrong Conan, I agree with a lot of what he says,” said Silverman, as Hitler, “Like 90% of what he says. I’m like this guy

gets it. But it’s just – I don’t like the way he says it. It’s crass.” Silverman, aka Hitler, also commented on some of the smaller elements of Donald’s campaign. “What kind of person talks about his penis size on national television?,” she asked, “Oh yeah, I’m so sure Donald Trump has a big penis. I famously have a micropenis. That’s what makes a tyrant.” Seeing all of Trump’s hateful rhetoric actual got Hitler to be introspective. Introspection that lasted for about 15 seconds.

he 2016 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards rolled out the orange carpet at The Forum in Los Angeles, California, on Saturday night, and from the first orange blimp awarded to the final sliming, the fun didn’t stop! Highlights from the show included host Blake Shelton’s Star Wars-inspired intro, Fuller House star John Stamos getting inducted into the prestigious (and messy!) Celebrity Slime Club (see above), Captain America: Civil War stars Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans staging an adorable thumb wrestling match, and Joe Jonas performing a high-energy rendition of “Cake By the Ocean,” with his band, DNCE.

were filmed near the Cenotaph in central London. Host Matt LeBlanc was seen driving around Westminster as shooting took place for the new series of the BBC Two show, which is due to air in May.

50 Cent made quite a statement when he arrived to bankruptcy court on Wednesday – the 40-year-old artist had wads of dollar bills stuffed in his pants! According to TMZ, the court hearing in Hartford, Connecticut, was called because of 50 Cent's penchant for showing off what may be examples of his ummmmm taxable income on Instagram, which is of concern to his creditors in his ongoing bankruptcy case. Court documents reveal that 50 Cent claims he only uses prop money in his snaps, TMZ reports.

Beautiful Places in

Hisham’s Palace Hisham’s Palace was built between the years 720 and 750 AD. It is also known as Hirbet al-Mafjar, which roughly translates to “flower water ruins.” This enticing palace lies nestled in the desert and, though it takes its name from Hisham bin Abdel Malek, many have argued that its decor and structure are more suited to Hisham’s nephew and successor, AlWalid bin Yazid. Walid led quite the playboy lifestyle, and his palace suited it, being used predominantly for luxury. For lovers of beauty, the mosaics in the palace are truly stunning Khan al-Umdan The Khan is an 18th-century construction settled in the port of Acre. When built by Ahmed Al-Jazzar, it was separated into two floors. The first floor was used for the unloading of goods by merchants fresh from the sea, while the top floor housed the merchants overnight. Despite being built for practical purposes, the architectural beauty of the structure is undeniable. With cave-like sections lining the two floors, resting on rows of granite pillars, the Khan of Acre is quite a remarkable sight. Abraham Mosque One of the oldest holy sites in the world The Abraham mosque, or the Ibrahimi mosque, is one of the most influential holy sites in the world. It is believed to be the burial site of Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Rebecca, and Leah. As such, its influence reaches all three of the major religions, being

sacred to Christians, Jews, and Muslims alike. However, its religious influence isn’t its only asset; the intimidatingly large mosque has an overwhelming intensity that is truly unforgettable. The interior is grand, ornate, and an impressive sight to say the least. Aram al-Sharif The Haram al-Sharif is revered by Jews and Muslims alike. For the Jews, the compound is believed to have been built over the ancient temple of Herod. For the Muslims, the site is home to the golden dome, called The Dome of the Rock, one of their most valued mosques. It is believed to be the place at which the prophet Muhammed ascended to heaven. The dome’s beauty is profound. It is banked by the Wailing Wall, where crowds gather daily, and stands out as a lone golden dome in the hustle and bustle of Jerusalem. Herodyon Burial site of Herod the Great Atop a truncated, cone-shaped hill, Herod the Great left his mark. In the Judaean Desert, a palace, fortress, and small town can be found, built between 15 and 23 AD. Excavations of the artificial hill, which is the peak of the Judaean Desert, revealed some remarkable discoveries. The ruins of Herodyon still remain and, like the fictitious city of Atlantis, have an unearthly quality to them. Imagining the construction of this incredible site is amazing enough, but witnessing it is almost overwhelming. Visitors will surely find

themselves aghast at the fascinating ruins of this unique fortress. Church of the Holy Sepulchre Site of the crucifixion The site of the crucifixion, and the burial site of Jesus of Nazareth, this is one of the holiest sites in the world for Christianity. Despite its religious significance, the beauty of this church surpasses all else, including its history. The interior is colorful, ornate, and compelling. The atmosphere of the church alone is well worth experiencing. Many people come to the church to weep and to caress the stone of Golgotha, where the cross is believed to have been placed. With high-domed ceilings and an ancient structure, the building is a sight that shouldn’t be missed by anyone with a keen eye for architecture. Monastery of the Temptation Monastery in the mountains The Mount of Temptation is where Jesus is said to have been tempted by the devil during his 40 days of fasting. On the sheer face of this mountain, a monastery has been built. The monastery blends into the stone of the mountain, and has visitors astounded when they finally catch a glimpse of what lies in wait for them across the desert. With spectacular views from the monastery and equally spectacular views of the monastery from below, this was bound to make the list of the most beautiful places in Palestine. Being built into a cliff, the monastery has a fantastical, otherworldly quality to it.

SourcelingS Hello Al Ain, my name is Bella and this is my big brother Harry. I am 5 years old and Harry is 8. We both attend school at Brighton College where we enjoy fun filled days with our friends and teachers. I am especially fond of crafts, baking, singing and dancing while my brother enjoys swimming, reading and drama. As much as we love our home in the Garden City, we are excited about moving to Thailand at the end of March and beginning a brand new adventure. We will miss our many friends and want to thank everyone for making our stay over the past 3 years a pleasant and most memorable one.
