Juravinski hospital in Ontario, Canada allows pets to visit their seriously ill humans. The hospital adopted a program called Zachary’s Paws for Healing, launched by Donna Jenkins. She was inspired by her 25-year-old nephew, Zachary, who benefited greatly from having his dogs around him while he was battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma. “While Zachary was in the hospital for many weeks and very sick after having a stem cell transplant, he begged to see his dog, Chase,” Jenkins told Bored Panda. “We sneaked Chase into ICU to see him and the effect it had on Zachary was remarkable.

When Zachary realized he was not going to survive his cancer, he made me promise to start the organization. We had our official first patient visit September 15, 2015. “We know that when patients get to see their pet, it can improve vital signs, improve depression and the feeling of isolation, it opens communication back up and it is a reminder for a reason for the patient to get well and return home.” The visits are weekly and they usually take 1 hour. The pets are thoroughly cleaned before entering the hospital and they are kept away from other patients.

A new recommendation made by the Federal Traffic Council has added new articles to the law governing dangerous driving, a top Dubai Police official has said. According to Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin, Assistant Commander-inChief of the Dubai Police for Operations, the recommendation gives the traffic police the authority to determine what constitutes dangerous driving. The recommendation makes 10 actions - such as eating, drinking, applying make up, adjusting head scarves, taking a selfie, reading, watching televisions in cars, smoking, etc - while driving traffic violations. When the recommendation is implemented, the violations will result in a Dh1,000 fine, 12 black points and the seizure of vehicle for a month. Applying makeup or combing hair while driving is more dangerous than using mobile phones, said Maj-Gen Al Zafin. He stressed that the police have the

authority to determine if a particular action by a motorist constitutes dangerous driving. He clarified that motorists are banned from using mobile phones while driving even when they are waiting at traffic signals. The fine for using mobile phones at traffic signals and roundabouts would be Dh200. The police will also impose four black points on errant motorists.

Dh206m infrastructure built for Emirati housing in Al Ain

Second phase of Neima Residential Project in Al Ain will cater to 616 plots and villas and community facilities Abu Dhabi: A Dh206 million project to lay down additional infrastructure for the Neima Emirati housing project in Al Ain has been completed by the facilities developer, the Abu Dhabi General Services Company – Musanada. The project, which consists of 177 kilometres of electricity, road, storm water and drainage networks, will serve 616 residential plots and villas, along with community facilities such as mosques, a mall, five schools and power stations. These are spread out over more than 728,000 square metres. The facilities, which are the second phase of development for Neima, have now been handed over to Al Ain Municipality, Musanada announced in a statement sent today (April 9). The Neima project is being developed for Emirati families under the directions of the emirate of Abu Dhabi’s citizen housing overseer, the Abu Dhabi Housing Authority. It is located 20 kilometres south from the Ain Ain city centre, on the way to Jebel Hafeet. Infrastructure development for its first phase was finished by Musanada between 2009 and 2012 to serve about 490 residential villas, along with four mosques and four schools.

In the second phase of the project, which began in 2013, a total of 85 kilometres of power lines have been laid, along with 18 kilometres of road, 16.5 kilometres of storm water network, 31 kilometres of water network and 26 kilometres for

ATHENS DNA LAB HELPS TRACE THOSE LOST AT SEA ON AEGEAN CROSSING 12

The phone call comes from New York, seven hours behind Athens. A Syrian woman in the United States is trying to trace her cousin and uncle. She believes both died trying to cross the Aegean from Turkey to Greece. She wants to know for sure and, if so, to be able to make appropriate arrangements and repatriate their bodies.

enelope Miniati, the new head of Greece's criminology service, takes the call. She sees no bodies but her job is to make sure that families know the fate of their beloved ones.

She has, almost singlehandedly, supervised the country's DNA service from its inception. It is now a crucial link for thousands trying to trace children, mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters missing on the dangerous crossing from Turkey to Greece in the past year. "It is an obligation of our state and a mark of civilisation," said Miniati, who was promoted last month from head of the DNA service to oversee the entire criminology service. "If someone is not found and buried, the process of mourning cannot begin. It's as though the souls continue to hover."

drowning on the crossing from Turkey to Greece have grown proportionately. During the height of the crisis, an average of two children a day drowned, according to UNHCR figures. Miniati's staff do not see the bodies but they deal with personal belongings, such as teddy bears and toothbrushes, brought in by relatives to help establish DNA matches. Besides the sheer volume, there are more specific aspects to the refugee crisis that have made the work of the Greek DNA lab crucial. Many of the dead are identified immediately, but DNA is often used to identify bodies found at sea after decomposition has set in, making it difficult to use fingerprints or dental, surgical or medical records from the refugee's home countries, such as Syria.

About 4,400 people have died in the Mediterranean since 2015. The refugee crisis has meant that the DNA lab, located in an Athens suburb, has gone from dealing with about 30 cases a year on average to as many as 70 in two days, as happened last summer after two major shipwrecks in as many days.

The Syrian woman is sure her uncle and cousin were in a shipwreck at the end of October last year, when a total of 221 people died, the deadliest month on record in 2015 for the crossing to Greece. Aristea Methenitis, the biologist who took the call said some sleuthing was required. The date of the shipwreck did not tally with the dates they had in Greece, but there was one two days later, she said.

From last year up to March 20 this year, Greek authorities reported 571 people dead or missing on the route from Turkey to Greece.

The use of DNA will remain an important tool now and in the future in proving kinship when supporting documents are unavailable.

Miniati, a graduate of the universities of Toledo in the United States and Crete, Greece, set up the country's first DNA lab in 1994 with two other women. The team now numbers about 55 scientists and she is the only original member left.

Citing a recent example in Greece of a 14-year-old unaccompanied minor, Miniati said it was extremely important to establish that there was a biological link between the youngster and the man who said he was his uncle. More than 90,000 unaccompanied or separated children registered and applied for asylum, or were in care in Europe last year, mostly in Germany and Sweden

She says that, as a result of her US education, she insisted that the lab, formally called the Greek Police's Subdivision of Biological and Biochemical Examination and Analyses-DNA, was the central repository for all genetic material. This will enable the efficient exchange of information with other states and services in the future. Greece's worst aviation accident, the crash in 2005 of a Helios Airways plane that killed all 121 people on board, was instrumental in teaching her and her staff about the identification of disaster victims, particularly of small children and families, who are more difficult to identify because they are genetically similar. She has already filed a missing persons report with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in New York and will send a DNA sample from her aunt, the sister of the missing uncle, to Athens via the Greek diplomatic mission to be matched against what is in the Greek missing persons database. "Sometimes the identification of a body is as simple as the cross someone is wearing, or the glasses their father always wore," Miniati said. "But when it's not, the easiest way we have settled on is DNA." 13

NEW RESEARCH SAYS THINGS ARE LOOKING SUPER-BAD FOR THE FUTURE OF THE CLIMATE. BUT THE DOOM-N’-GLOOMERS WON’T GET US DOWN.

utwardly, at least, I am a pessimist. Even while growing up in what could justifiably be described as a seaside idyll, I feasted on novels like Brave New World and 1984 in which the rules that underpin civil society had broken down or been usurped. I saw their themes reflected in my relations with schoolmates. These days, I relish the apocalyptic fantasies emanating from the publishing empire of Bill Bonner, an American billionaire constantly on the move between renovation projects in Baltimore, Switzerland and somewhere wine-and-cheesy in France. Bill’s particular brand of apocalypse is financial, and he’s onto a winner. Even the most superficial study of financial history reveals that sooner or later markets crash. Well, Bill knows this better than superficially, yet he peddles the looming disaster as proof of his prescience. It’s a bit like predicting that people are going to die. You can’t really go wrong. One writer in Bill’s Australian stable, Vern Gowdie, is particularly doomy. Nary a day passes without Vern claiming the latest drop in BHP’s share price is the dawning of The End of Australia, the title of his latest book.

The pessimist in me wants him to be right. The optimist bought BHP at $29. I relish doom-n’-gloom movies, too. The genre really took off in the 70s with the Airport movies (no, not Airplane), The Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake and the best of the bunch, The Towering Inferno, in which a group of A-grade actors fought to put out a fire in a B-grade tower block. Enviro-themed apocalypse movies entered the genre when Kevin Costner produced a fantasy set in a world of water, the eminently forgettable . . . something-something. It saved its most dramatic disaster for the box office. More recently, there was The Day After Tomorrow, a blockbuster cornfest I witnessed with my wife in a theatre somewhere in deepest, sweatiest Asia. Someone had turned the air-con down to ten degrees— deliberately, perhaps. Clad in but t-shirts and shorts, we shivered through it very much in sympathy with the characters. It didn’t make for a pleasant viewing experience, however, and we emerged from the theatre as grateful for high-thirties humidity as we were for having escaped Dennis Quaid’s acting. Interestingly, new research suggests that the film’s far-fetched vision of environmental apocalypse may not be that far-fetched

after all. Ricarda Winkelmann of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research concludes that the burning of all available fossil-fuel reserves threatens dozens of coastal cities— New York, Tokyo and Shanghai included. We can expect the seas to rise ten feet every century for a thousand years, then continue to rise for thousands more beyond that to a top of 200 feet. In short, we’re in for disruption, devastation and dystopia. But Hal Wanless and Michael Mann argue that Winkelmann’s model underestimates the speed of the rise. And James Hansen, the scientist who first testified to Congress of the dangers of global warming back in 1988, agrees that multi-meter sea rise could happen within decades, not centuries. And that ain’t the half of it. Hansen says the intrusion of the cold freshwater into the planet's oceans is shutting down ocean circulation. We can look forward to “superstorms,” or “all hell” breaking loose. So, to summarise, Winkelmann says the future will bring floods, devastation, disruption and dystopia. And the others? Well, that’s where it gets really exciting for us pessimists . . .

“I believe there is a growing trend of parents seeking help for their teenagers due to their own increase in awareness of the difficulties that teenagers are experiencing. I believe that trend began when parents began to acknowledge and accept that their teenagers are having difficulties, mild or severe, that they have not been able to work through. This is a phenomenon that both expatriates and nationals are experiencing. However, the tendency seems to be that more expatriates are seeking help,” said Dr. Kanafani who is also adjunct professor of psychology at the Middlesex University in Dubai. Dr. Kanafani, who is a licensed clinical psychologist in Canada and the UAE, was speaking ahead of a one-day, learning resource seminar planned for Dubai which will assist parents, teachers, health professionals and carers in ensuring the mental health and emotional wellbeing of their teenage charges.

The seminar – Ensuring Our Youth Live Life Fully – is being organised by Dubai’s specialist training and capacity building consultancy Ebdaah and will take place on Saturday, April 16 at the Media Rotana Hotel. It will be addressed by three prominent experts including Dr. Kanafani. The other experts are Dr. Jim Boylan, a UK consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist and Director of Medical Education at Tess, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, one of the UK’s largest and most successful mental health providers and Dr. Madeleine Portwood, the British Psychological Society’s spokesperson on child development, neurodevelopment disorders and teenage dilemmas. It comes in the wake of a 2013 Dubai Health Authority study which revealed that about one in five teenage students in the emirate showed symptoms of depression. “There seems to be a rise in stress, anxiety, and depressive feelings in teenagers. This is exacerbated by the lack of effective coping strategies as well as lack of proper avenues of emotional release,” explained Dr. Kanafani. “Parents should consider seeking help when they feel that their adolescent has difficulty opening up to them or when they feel unsure of what to do or how to help their child. It’s important parents recognise their limitations during this developmental stage and seek help when necessary.” During the four-module Ebdaah seminar delegates will get a better understanding of mental health conditions and which diagnoses are needed; learn which trigger signs to look for and when to seek interventional help and leave with short-term screening tools and training and insights into long term school-based psychiatry. Dr. Kanafani says there are some key telltale signs parents should watch out for. They include:

persistent sadness, empty or irritable moods; diminished interest or pleasure in almost all activities and a loss of energy; appetite and sleeping pattern changes; inability to concentrate, over thinking, feelings of panic, fear and uneasiness. “Teachers should watch for similar symptoms as well as notice changes in behaviour at school or academic performance,” she suggests. Dr. Kanafani says there are many realistic strategies that can help teenagers, depending on what they are experiencing and what is contributing to their difficulty. Some blanket techniques include: managing expectations; physical exercise; developing healthy appetites and sleeping patterns. “It is important for people to remember that teenagers are human and it is counterproductive to hold them to impossibly high standards which leads to beating themselves up when they fail to meet them. Research shows that exercise can be as effective at treating depression as anti-depressants in certain cases. Physical activity boosts blood flow to the brain which moderates chemical balance and increases serotonin, dopamine, and endorphin levels as well as reduces stress hormone levels. Equally food plays an essential role in maintaining an overall sense of wellbeing. Nutritional strategies are used to help improve mood and healthy brain functioning while sleep is essential for minimising stress, boosting mood, and improving performance. Parents need to help children organise their schedules.”

You must set limits as well as consequences to what is acceptable and unacceptable at home, school, and elsewhere. However, avoid ultimatums and make sure to explain your decisions in a clear and concise manner. The Ebdaah seminar comes as recent international reports confirm that adolescence is a time of high mental health and associated illness risk. Nine out of 10 teenagers admitted to experiencing stress in the past year with two thirds of cases leading to symptoms of stress-related illnesses, according to a new study by the UK’s National Citizen Service. In two thirds of cases the stress led to symptoms of stressrelated illnesses, including insomnia, eating disorders and depression. Dr. Kanafani says if help is not sought during this critical life stage, the symptoms will continue and increase in intensity and frequency. “Ultimately, this may cause dysfunction in different areas of an adolescent's life such as academically, socially, and cognitively. Seeking professional help will teach the adolescent self-advocacy skills, resiliency, and effective coping strategies needed to work through life stressors.”

Key to all strategies though, says Dr. Kanafani is patience. “Be patient and consistent during their developmental phase - they are changing and trying to make sense of their place in the world. DO NOT MINIMIZE their feelings in hopes of

WHEN YOU REALIZE THAT The head of the preschool my kids attended once said, “Parenting is really just one long good-bye.” At the time, she was trying to alleviate the anxiety of us over-anxious, first-time mommies, who were leaving our children for a few hours at their first school experience. Her words have always stuck with me, because she is right. Parenting is a never-ending journey of constantly saying good-bye and gradually letting go.

y kids were “promoted” this week. One finished elementary school and one finished middle school. I assume they don’t call it graduation because they are not receiving a degree, and by calling it “promotion,” it still allows us to mark this rite of passage. I took the obligatory promotion portraits of my kids in their outfits that will most likely only be worn once. I snagged one shot of Cal as he walked out with the 450 other middle-schoolers, most of whom I’ve never seen before. I missed one of Eli because, unbeknownst to us, we were sitting on the wrong side of the auditorium. I posted them on Facebook with a glib reference to them growing up. But honestly, I find myself wanting to cry uncontrollably at the whole thing. They are getting bigger, older and wiser to the world. They have lives we are not always privy to anymore.

They have friends I don’t always know and emotions they don’t always want to share, and they spend lots of time away from us—even when we are all in the same house. They are pulling away, like they are supposed to, like we are supposed to let them. In four years, my oldest will leave for college. Four years is not a long time. I find myself saying things like, “Let me show you how to do this because it might come in handy when you are at college.” They think I’ve totally lost it, roll their eyes, and sometimes indulge me. They don’t yet know that the time they have left living in our home will flash by in an instant. This is part of the long good-bye. This is the part of the journey that you know is coming—the rites of passage that signify growth—but are never really prepared for. We have to slowly let them go and fly on their own. It is our job as their parents. As much as I intellectually understand this is a part of the job, my heart will never let go.

When I begin to work with a company, my favorite task is discovering how their current office processes work, or don’t in some cases. My goal at that point is to enhance the business by implementing systems that help take control of their environment, time, paper, and habits.

When I first started in the working world, someone once told me, “time is money, find the most efficient way of doing something and don’t waste the company’s money.” My motivation from then on was to learn to work as quickly and accurately as possible. The following are five methods that can help businesses streamline their office systems. These ideas have a cross-functional purpose that I use at home too; I am a mother first and foremost and even the most organized people can feel over whelmed from time to time.

1. Create a visual to-do list. This is my favorite method taken from Toyota’s Kanban board, a visual tool for communication. Using a white board and multicoloured Post-It notes, colour coordinate goals, write tasks and prioritize. This method works in team environments too, where each person writes their name on a note and a task that they intend to complete. 2. Reduce paper clutter. Unsubscribe from hard copy i.e. magazines, get your bills online, and don’t print anything out you don’t have to. Of course, certain documents (e.g., tax statements) may need to be kept in hard copy form, but do as much as you can to streamline the rest. 3. Take documents online. Google Documents (http://docs.google.com) is perfect for online document storage, distribution, and collaboration. You can easily collaborate with others online, instead of in person and design task lists, hour logs, etc. Documents can be time-stamped and verified by usernames.

4. Use the snipping tool. The Snipping Tool on your computer can make a huge difference when you are trying to explain something to someone else. Send a “snip” of an article, website or budget transactions or create excellent graphic directions for training. 5. Get Scheduling. Online scheduling software saves my time daily. I use Doodle (www.doodle.com), which offers a selection of online solutions that simplify the process of scheduling appointments. This includes a group event “poll” to schedule meetings at a time everyone can attend. There are many ways in which you can effect change and create efficiency at home or in the workplace. The most important thing to remember is that people have to be on board with the ideas of streamlining in order for it to be truly effective. I always encourage clients to try something on a small scale first, and if they have success in that endeavor, then they can roll it out to the entire organization. WORLD LEADERS TO SIGN PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT ON EARTH DAY

his month, over one billion people in 192 countries will take action to protect our shared environment. All across the globe, in big cities to small villages and everything in-between, people are organizing, demanding climate action, cleaning up their local communities, meeting with their elected officials, planting trees, and teaching their children to protect our planet.

This year, in a rare and special event, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has invited every world leader to the United Nations to officially sign the Paris Climate Agreement reached this past December. he Al Qattara Arts Centre, in the redeveloped fort in Al Ain run by Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi), hosts an array of distinctive musical and art initiatives and activities along with a number of art exhibitions all year

HAS THE MIDAS TOUCH

veryone loves a good “rags to riches” story and although I am inflating the rags part in regards to this tale, sitting with the Midas touch, Sona Salih and listening to her inspiring success story was as good a time you will ever have whilst in the company of a true local champion. Like the old saying, “you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink”, not everyone has the mettle to succeed and in the case of this young, talented and hard working woman, luck materialized, as it often does, at the cross roads of hard work and opportunity. One of Sona’s many successful ventures to date is the spectacular History Restaurant located behind Al Jimi Mall and it is here that I met with the star of this issue for a taste of entrepreneurial history, a heaping helping of hospitality and a most inspiring tale of achievement. The story begins in 1997 with a young lady, who after having completed her secondary school education, meets the man of her dreams. Today, with 5 children and nearly 2 decades of married life behind her, Sona still refers to Salem as her boy friend – Al Hamdulillah! After a mere two months of marriage, Sona recounts being bored and wasted no time procuring a Government job. A while back, her father had given her an old clunker of a car that she used for the daily commute but after being teased by a colleague about the state of her ride, her husband Salem came to the rescue with a new vehicle. Little did Salem know that this gesture of kindness would prove to be the turning point and means with which this dynamo of a woman would catapult their lives into a fairy tale, happy ever after ending. Keeping in mind that Sona has trouble sitting still, it comes as no surprise that merely working for the government was not going to satisfy her longing for achievement and so before you could say entrepreneur, Sona asked her husband if she could sell that beautiful new car to help fund the opening of her first business. And so it was that in 1999 the first Sona Salon was born in Muroor, Abu Dhabi with the AED 45,000 from the car sale and a little saved cash. With virtually no prior business experience, she applied a formula of 10% inspiration with 90% perspiration, mastered the affair and set a course for success.

In 2002 Sona and Salem decided to move to Al Ain where they built a home on a piece of land Salem owned. Instead of keeping the land all to themselves, they applied that good old entrepreneurial spirit, divided the property, retaining a modest home and built two additional rental units to profit from. This, in turn, would lead to a series of successful real estate ventures and since the salon in Abu Dhabi was now doing very well under the watchful eye of her mother, Sona saw no reason not to repeat the story in Al Ain. And then there were two with the second one appearing in Al Yahar where she rented an inexpensive yet suitable space for the bargain price of AED 15,000 per year. I should also mention that along with now running two salons and frequent commutes between the two cities, Sona did not give up her government job. Instead, she transferred to an open position in Al Ain and managed to juggle her many responsibilities into the wee hours of each night. And she still has that very same job to this day! Exhaustion was certainly not a deterrent, nor was slowing down a part of her vocabulary. After several more years of hard work and determination, we fast forward to the present to discover that the sale of an AED 45,000 automobile led to an empire of 35 established businesses including the Sona Salon brand, restaurants, recruitment and maintenance agencies along with an array of real estate investments that are scattered throughout the UAE and Oman. Remember that Salon in Al Yahar that was rented in 2002 for AED 15,000 per year? Sona purchased the building for AED 15,000,000 in 2013! Needless to say, this woman, alongside a devoted and supportive husband has managed to turn a small investment into millions over the years and through it all, remained humble, kind and absolutely real! Today, Sona offers free business advice to anyone seeking their fortune and tells us that it is her duty to give back to her country and its people as a gesture of appreciation for the bounty she has been so privileged to draw from in the past.

Google Has a Room Full of Robot Arms Learning Hand-Eye Coordination Even though Google is selling Boston Dynamics, that doesn’t mean it’s getting out of the robot business. Just ask its room full of robotic arms. It’s about more than just making a good robot arm, though. It’s also about teaching a robotic arm tactile learning skills. Essentially, Google outfitted the arms with basic optical sensors and a neural network, or artificial brain capable of learning. The robot was then tasked with finding specific objects in a pile, and learning how best to grasp them in order to move the object. This is easier said than done, given that it’s a skill even humans gradually acquire. The researchers said it’s essentially hand-eye coordination. The goal is a robot that could automate sorting tasks. This could be a bot designed for warehouse work, or one that could sort through single stream recycling to pick out glass bottles and aluminum cans from other items in the bin. Regardless, granting machines spatial reasoning and the ability to learn and adapt to objects could be a big boon going forward, with bots able to adjust its grasp for as hard or as light as the job necessitates. Combine cornstarch, flour, baking powder, 2 teaspoons kosher salt, sesame seeds, and coconut in a large bowl and whisk until homogenous. Add water and vodka and whisk until a smooth batter is formed, adding up to 2 tablespoons additional water if batter is too thick. It should have the consistency of thin paint and fall off of the whisk in thin ribbons that instantly disappear as they hit the surface of the batter in the bowl.

Add cauliflower to batter. Working one at a time, lift one piece and allow excess batter to drip off. Carefully lower into hot oil. Repeat with remaining cauliflower until wok or fryer is full. Do not crowd pan. (You'll be able to fit about half of the cauliflower in each batch). n the northeastern portion of Germany, about thirty-six miles southeast of Berlin, a passenger train and shuttle service delivers men, women, and children to the door of one of the most voluminous structures on the planet. They arrive throughout the day and night, every day of the year. The enormous dome stands 350 feet tall, and encloses 194 million cubic feet of space. It was originally commissioned by CargoLifter AG as a hangar for their heavy-lift airship concept, but their dirigible was never developed, and the company went bankrupt in 2002. The following year, Malaysian Tanjong Company purchased the gigantic building and filled it with something never before seen in northeast Germany: tropical paradise. Tropical Islands Resort is an artificial exotic island environment which includes a rain forest, beaches, artificial sunlight, palm trees, orchids, and ambient birdsong. A large portion of the south side is is made up of transparent panels, allowing natural sunlight to help brighten the interior during the day. The internal temperature is always kept at a comfortable 77-82 degrees

Fahrenheit with 50-60% air humidity yearround, regardless of the weather outdoors. The resort’s builders have engineered what amounts to a miniature ecosystem. About 80% of the resort’s 66,000 square meters of floor space is used for “green space,” which includes more than 500 species of plants, including palm trees, orchids, and other tropical vegetation. Water from the pools is reclaimed to water the plant life, which grows in a rich, custom-made soil made up of sand, organic waste, clay, and tree bark. The dome’s transparent panels are also UV permeable, exposing the plants to natural sunlight and allowing the building to operate as a giant greenhouse. Some have said that the interior’s high humidity causes water condensation on the inside of the dome, which collects for some time before finally falling. This produces light, spontaneous rain showers on occasion, adding to the ambiance of the place. The resort includes a “Balinese lagoon” with whirlpools and a waterfall, a “south sea” with an 8,000 square meter sand beach, a tropical village, and a rainforest section with winding walkways. It offers all of the benefits of a Caribbean cruise without ever

leaving port, including the tourist-tailored, stereotyped culture. You can’t beat that with a palm frond. If you happen to be in Europe already, the price of a train ticket and admission is probably considerably less money than flying to a real tropical island… of course a genuine island offers blue skies and full sunlight in place of gray girders and perpetual overcast, but this place seems to make for a decent substitute. Even if artificial tropical paradise isn’t your cup of tea, it may be worth seeing just to marvel at the magnitude of the structure and the engineering. The dome can host up to 7,000 visitors at once, and it has a staff of about 500. The resort offers restaurants, shopping, tanning, stage entertainment, and overnight camping on Paradise beach. Admission is 18.50 Euro (about $23) on weekdays, and 23.50 Euro (about $29) on weekends, which includes an unlimited stay including all shows. Much like a real tropical island, Tropical Islands Resort is open around the clock, every day of the year. They also offer two other services which make for a brilliant combination: a day care center, and seven fully stocked bars. Sign me up. The Source
