have absolutely no control over, no matter how well prepared we believe we may be for that big ‘ole cruel world. But what we do have absolute control over is the way we react to the events that often catch us by surprise. We can freak and stress out to the point of cardiac arrest or accept the unavoidable in a calm and pragmatic fashion – the latter will lead to a much longer and happier existence.
or those of you who may have noticed my absence and perhaps even missed these bi-weekly rants, I have been on a bit of a sabbatical to recharge the old battery and surface refreshed – it didn’t work!
I woke up this morning with a sore throat that required a fire extinguisher, two boys in need of a platoon of peacekeepers, a wife at the end of her emotional tether, a butter licking feline that promptly exited the kitchen off the end of my sneaker clad foot whilst skidding to a near deadly fall in the puddle of water left behind by a leaky dishwasher. Welcome to a brief snapshot of my morning in paradise!
Life can often be difficult and I would like to be known as the guy who consistently perfected the art of making lemonade from lemons. And having said that, I will be on my way to pick the kids up from school, hug them like there is no tomorrow and rehearse the tender greeting reserved for my better half upon arriving at home – oh, and the cat will receive an apologetic cuddle as well.
And what did I learn from all of this? I learned that there are a great many things in life that we

Al Ain Safari Set to Open with Lions, Zebras and Giraffes World's largest man-made safari park offers a unique opportunity to get closer to animals exclusively from the African continent .
The world's largest man-made safari park is now open to the public. Part of the Al Ain Zoo, the Al Ain Safari spreads across 217 hectares of land, at the foothills of Al Hajar Mountains. "Almost every day we've had people coming to the zoo's gates to ask when we are opening the safari," said Mark Craig, director of Life Science at the Al Ain Zoo. On Wednesday 20th of April, the first of several wildlife tours experiences opened at the African Safari. "In the future we will also have an Elephant Safari, and Asian and an Arabian Safari," he added. The African Safari includes, at the moment, 12 different species of mammals, all indigenous to the African continent. They are mostly antelopes, but there are also lions, zebras and giraffes. "At the moment we have 200 animals in the park, but by next year we are planning to add eight more species, including big birds such as ostriches, and increase the number of animals to 500," Craig told Khaleej Times. The park tour lasts for about one hour and can be done either in a large Nissan Patrol SUV or in a specially modified truck, which holds up to 22 people. The truck is fully enclosed with glass windows (can't be opened), but it has a
small platform at the back, where people can go out to take photos at designated stops. Truck seats sell at Dh200 per person. The SUV is considered the VIP option and the tour price is Dh1,000 per car. The driver, always an Emirati man or woman, will double up as a tour guide. More importantly, it goes on a different route, to get closer to animals, particularly the lions' den. Though the centre was inaugurated in 2001, it has only been used as a research facility.
Visitors to the centre will have access to five different exhibition areas focused on Abu Dhabi emirate's desert environment, traditions, conservation efforts and emerging sustainability agendas. Tour options • Specially modified truck which can hold up to 22 people; Dh200 per person • VIP option in SUV priced at Dh1,000 per car • For more information visit: http://www.alainzoo.ae/home/planyour-visit/tickets.aspx

Pets Having Better Birthday Parties Than You
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Nelson Mandela
It isn't just humans that celebrate their birthdays. Pets do it too. And as you can see from these pictures compiled by Bored Panda, sometimes they do it even better than you do. Some of them prefer the more traditionalstyle birthday, complete with cake and party-hats. Others however prefer something a little bit more unconventional, like a bouquet of fish for example, or a room filled with tennis balls. But if there's one thing that all of these pets have in common it's that they all know how to throw a party!

ASK THE DOCTOR
Dr. Joel: My child has been vomiting and had diarrhea for the last 24 hours. At what point do I need to worry about dehydration and bring them into the Urgent Care? Well, thankfully most vomiting and diarrhea is self limited, it is just the way God made our bodies to get the bad stuff out. However there are some times that you need to come sooner rather than later. If the vomit or diarrhea has any blood in it, then you must come immediately. If you have a baby and the vomit is green in color, not just milk color or white, then you must come immediately. Except for these few exceptions, the only real reason to come is for dehydration (too dry) and the best test (the one that we rely on in the clinic, and which you can do at home) is called the capillary refill test. Normally our fingernails are reddish in color. When we push on our nails, the part below turns white, and then when we let go, it turns red again. If, when we do this to our children the nail turns red very fast, then probably, they are not dehydrated and just giving them small frequent sips of whatever they will drink is ok. We should give small, frequent sips, because then the fluid is absorbed better. However, if the turning red part is a little slow, then please bring them in, so that we can evaluate their degree of dehydration and follow the best rehydration plan usually still consisting of oral rehydration, but sometimes IV rehydration. Again the body is trying to get "the bad out" so we do not have medicines nor do we want to "stop" the vomiting or diarrhea, as then "the bad gets worse". But we can rehydrate as we wait for the vomiting and diarrhea to stop on their own, usually when the virus is gone. I hope this has answered the question, and please come to visit us and we can teach you in person how to perform the Capillary refill test, then you can share with your friends and family, and all of your children will be safer as a result.

THE BRITISH ARE COMING!
I
may be Canadian and merely a product of the colonies but I must admit that I did feel a certain pride and even some Brit envy when the Beefeater led extravaganza cut loose in LuLu last week. On Wednesday the 13th of April, LuLu Hypermarkets inauguration ceremony for the British Food Festival 2016 was held at the Kuwaitat location and all things British were the focus of the event.
British expat and Al Ain resident Mrs. Kate Simpson along with Mr. Shaji Jamaludheen (Regional Director), Mr. Noushad Ali (Regional Manager) and Mr. Robert Preston (Retail Operations manager) were on hand for the ceremonial ribbon and cake cutting. A plethora of Union Jacks blanketed the entrance and adorned the massive store for as far as the eye could see, while smiling staff members at numerous stations throughout the various departments offered tasty British delights to the many fascinated shoppers. “This is one of many Festivals that we organize, throughout the year, to showcase the range of products which we import for our customers and this one is close to my heart being from the U.K., said Mr. Robert.” Celebrating Queen Elizabeth II 90th Birthday this year really added to the extra special feeling”, he added. With a larger selection of top brands and specialty food products from the U.K. than ever before, this year’s shopper’s were also able to enter a lucky draw for a brand new Land Rover Discovery! The festival was a huge success to say the least and since I am fortunate enough to live within a stone’s throw of the Kuwaitat location, I visited as often as possible to get in on the British invasion. What can I say other than “they came; they saw and it tasted extraordinary!”

MORE PLASTIC THAN FISH IN THE OCEANS BY
2050
I
n three decades, the world’s oceans will contain more discarded plastic than fish when measured by weight, researchers say. The shocking finding was revealed in a newly released Ellen MacArthur Foundation report that investigates the inefficiency of the world’s plastic economy.
While researchers acknowledge that plastic is integral to everyday life, they underscore the urgent need to reduce plastic waste. Most plastic packaging products are used only once before they are thrown away, resulting in annual economic losses of up to $120 billion. How Does Your Plastic Bag Get Into the Ocean? Furthermore, plastic production is notoriously resourceintensive, and could consume 20 percent of all oil produced by 2050. The plastic economy currently employs a largely linear flow, with disposable plastics having a definitive lifecycle that oftentimes ends in the world’s oceans and landfills, where they degrade slowly and harm wildlife. According to nonprofit conservation organization Keep America Beautiful, Americans produced 30 million tons of plastic products in 2009, only 2 million tons of which was recovered. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation has long supported the notion of circular economy, an economic system that produces no waste, instead reducing resource consumption and finding innovative ways to reuse and recycle materials such as plastic. This report demonstrates the importance of triggering a revolution in the plastics industrial ecosystem and is a first step to showing how to transform the way plastics move through our economy,” Dominic Waughray, of the World Economic Forum, says in a news release. “To move from insight to large scale action, it is clear that no one actor can work on this alone; the public, private sector and civil society all need to mobilize in order to capture the opportunity of the new circular plastics economy.”

Delivering a premature baby? All you need to know... What is premature birth?
•
Depending on the number of weeks of pregnancy (Gestation), prematurity can be further classified into late preterm (34 to 37 weeks), preterm (28 to 34 weeks) and extreme preterm (23 to 28 weeks). Currently, a gestation of 23 weeks and above is considered conducive with survival although there are rare cases of 22 week babies surviving.
Feeding problems and growth: The digestive systems are also immature and these babies struggle to tolerate feeds. They may need specialized artificial feeding directly into their veins (Total Parenteral Nutrition) and tube feeding before they become stronger and ready to consume the feeds by themselves. Their weight gain depends on the adequacy of feeding provided and growth is the single most important factor which improves all the organ functions – the bigger the baby the lesser the problems!
•
Infections. They›re prone to catching infections easily and have limited ability to fight them. This can pose a great challenge to their care.
Why is a premature infant so fragile?
•
Organ injury: As the immature organs are made to work while they are still not ready, some of them can be damaged. One of the important areas of concern with preterm babies is bleeding into the fluid spaces of the brain (IVH or Intra Ventricular Hemorrhage) and damage to the actual brain matter due to a lack of oxygen or blood flow. The incidence of these problems increases with increasing degree of prematurity; i.e. smaller and more immature babies are more likely to experience complications. This could later in life lead to problems with walking, talking, sight, hearing and intelligence. With our modern care, these complications are greatly reduced with brighter prospects for these babies.
What kinds of health problems can a premature infant have?
•
Premature babies can face problems with any of their organs as they are immature. However, the major issues that they face are:
Other organs like kidneys and liver can also suffer complications but these are less common than the ones mentioned above.
•
When these babies are discharged they need close outpatient follow up to look for any evidence of premature complications. We have specialist teams who only care for such babies and support them as intensely as we did during their stay in NICU.
•
The first day and first week of life are crucial. Babies who have an uneventful first week of life in general, have less long term problems, although this is not an absolute rule.
Premature birth is any baby being born before the expected due date. Though the due date is given at 40 completed weeks of pregnancy, from 37 weeks onwards, the baby is considered mature and hence prematurity is any time prior to 37 weeks.
There are many reasons why a premature baby is fragile: •
They are small. Typically, a baby born at 28 weeks will weigh around 1 kg; at 23 weeks 0.5 kg and at 34 weeks around 2 kg.
•
Their organs are immature. As soon as they are born these organs will have to start functioning as if they were born at full term.
•
Their ability to fight infections is limited and hence they can easily contract infections which could pose challenges to their care.
•
Breathing problems. The lungs have to function right from the time of birth to support oxygen supply to all the organs. If the lungs do not work it leads to all other organs failing. The lungs in preterm babies have reduced activity and quantity of a substance called surfactant. This leads to difficulty in breathing and the need to support breathing or provide artificial breathing support.
•
These babies are seen on a regular basis in our neonatal neurodevelopmental follow up clinic, where their growth, development and other health parameters are closely watched.
•
Brain damage leading on to delayed development is one the areas that is closely monitored. If these are identified, appropriate steps are taken to deal with the complications and to maximize the developmental potential of these babies.
•
Some preterm infants also have difficulty putting on weight and need supplemental nutrition, vitamins and iron, all of which is closely monitored to optimize their nutritional needs.
•
Dealing with preterm babies after discharge from NICU can be challenging and the family’s needs are closely monitored during outpatient visits and addressed as and when needed.
•
My baby was born at 25 weeks of gestation. How long will she remain in the newborn ICU?
•
A rough guide to this question is “Babies are usually ready to go home closer to the time they should have been born”. 37 – 40 weeks is when a baby is born fully mature. So a 25-week baby will stay in NICU for around 11 weeks. This is just a rule of thumb and some babies take slightly longer or less depending on the progress made during the NICU stay.
What can I expect in the NICU? / Why is the neonatal care unit significant? •
• Any newborn babies needing more than just the normal postnatal care are admitted to the NICU to support them.
•
These could include babies needing oxygen, tube feeding etc.
•
All babies less than 1.8 kg or less than 35 weeks of gestation are admitted to the NICU.
•
You will receive family oriented care where joint decision making is practiced.
•
We understand that you are separated from your baby and hence, we encourage parents to spend as much time as possible with the baby. Even babies in need of various intensive care support can receive skin to skin care (Kangaroo Mother Care) with the parents.
•
Prior to discharge for the babies who have stayed for many weeks in NICU, we also provide rooming in facilities (Home at hospital), where the family stays with the baby getting used to caring for the baby prior to going home, knowing that the experts are still only a shout away.
How much do premature babies weigh?
How will the doctor decide my baby is ready to go home from the newborn ICU?
•
There are four basic questions to be asked. If the answer is YES to all four, then the baby is ready for home.
What short term health risks do premature babies face?
1. Is the baby breathing normally and comfortably without any support?
•
The short term risks the babies face are due to the fact that their organs are immature and also due to the interventions babies need.
•
Some babies have to be sedated and placed on artificial breathing support. They need special tubes that go into their veins through which feeds and medicines can be administered directly into the blood stream. Some of these interventions are prone to complications but with the excellence in care that we provide, these are minimized.
•
All interventions put the baby at high risk of infections as their ability to fight these is weak. Our infection control measures are to the highest level and these help to minimize the risk. Parents and family are also supported in learning and practicing infection control measures during the NICU stay and after discharge.
2. Is the baby taking feeds normally without any extra support? 3. Is the weight gain satisfactory? 4. Are the parents confident and well oriented to care for the baby at home? Who can visit my baby in the NICU? •
Parents are welcome to visit the baby any time. Grandparents are allowed at certain times of the day.
•
The visiting restrictions are kept in place to protect your baby as they are less able to fight off infections that visitors can bring into the NICU. Infections in small babies can be very dangerous.
•
Prior to discharge the extended family are welcome to join in during the hand over process.
They are small. Typically, a baby born at 28 weeks will weigh around 1 kg; at 23 weeks 0.5 kg and at 34 weeks, around 2 kg.
What long term health risks can premature babies potentially face? •
The long term problems faced by the preterm infants are related to the degree of prematurity and their birth weight. The earlier and smaller babies are prone to more long term issues.
How can I cope with my feelings about my fragile baby? •
Dealing with a preterm baby in the NICU is difficult even for the strong hearted. However, these challenges can be effectively dealt with by having a close relationship with the carers of your baby (Doctors and Nurses). Walking into intensive care to find your baby attached to tubes and monitors in a fully alien environment can be very scary for the family. We encourage would be parents to visit the NICU during their antenatal visits. With antenatal education programs like Mama Care, the families are given enough information to help them following delivery.
•
We have trained staff who will counsel the family and address any doubts about the care process.
•
A notable practice is the joint ward rounds every day; parents are invited to join the combined rounds in the morning where an open and transparent discussion takes place. We›re available any time during the day if the family wishes to discuss the care of their baby.
•
We have gatherings and get-togethers of our ex Preterm families and this network helps the families share their experiences and come to terms with the difficulties the baby is facing.

LIMB DIFFERENCE AWARENESS MONTH
April is limb difference awareness month, a time to celebrate all of those affected by limb loss or abnormalities. There are many causes of limb difference from amputation, congenital amputation, chromosomal syndromes and bone deformation.
O
ur journey with a limb different child began in 2013 at our 12 week anatomy ultrasound when we found out our unborn child hadn't formed his left forearm. While our initial reaction was one of shock and even grief over all the things our child would struggle with and the hardship of being different, we found amazing support through online groups like theluckyfinproject.com and livingonehanded.com. We checked them out on facebook, and soon realised our son would be just as capable and happy as any other child. Lincoln has amniotic band syndrome. The banding restricted the blood flow to his left forearm as it was forming in utero causing the limb to stop growing. He has a small nubbin of soft tissue which looks like a

thumb but is not functioning. Lincoln is now 2 and his " lucky fin " has not slowed him down at all! He does everything any other 2 year old does and if he finds something he can't do yet, he simply adapts until he masters it. Lincoln was born in New Zealand but calls Al Ain home now. Lincoln loves to ride bikes, climb, paint, swim, dig, go camping and on adventures with his mum and dad. He also loves books and his cat Alfie. Lincoln is very friendly and is usually happy to show off his lucky fin so if you see him around, come and say hi and ask questions; there is nothing to be afraid of; it is not weird or wrong, just different and different is awesome!

IS FACEBOOK FAILING YOUR BUSINESS?
“Hannah Hall is a Virtual PA in Al Ain, supporting businesses with administration, online marketing and event management.”
What has 1.59 Billion users and 40 million active small businesses? Yes, you’ve guessed it, Facebook; that constantly evolving and very distracting marketing tool we are all told to use to attract new customers. But can small businesses really benefit from being on Facebook?
F
acebook heavily promotes its business pages as a way for small companies to engage their customers. But despite the success of Facebook in general, small business owners like myself, find it their top challenge when trying to convert connections into customers.
When Facebook recently announced that small business pages only organically* reached 16% of their audiences, business owners were left confused as to whether they should actually focus any marketing efforts on Facebook now at all. So what can a small business do if Facebook is failing them? 1. Explore other platforms that make your business visible. Create a Google+ page for your business, as people will probably type a search there before Facebook. Look at your company and decide where you can communicate best. If you’re a restaurant, join Instagram, where you can promote offers and photos of your food. If you’re a startup consultancy with things to say, join Twitter.
2. Ask for Tags, not Likes. Facebook is still a good place to build a free online presence. By asking fans and people who use your business to “Tag” you in their posts rather than “Like”, you will raise your chances of being seen on someone else’s feed. 22
The Source
3. Emails are delivered 90% of the time; Facebook posts are delivered 2% of the time. Consider building an email newsletter list. A newsletter is typically opened 20% of the time. 4. Pay to reach. To make a real impact on Facebook, small businesses need to pay for targeted advertising. If you choose to advertise, have a look at the guide on Facebook on how to make the most from your ads. 5. Reward. Build a customer database through a good rewards program and keep customers engaged after they leave the shop. Reach out to them afterwards via email or SMS, with the right message at the right time. Finally, measure everything; from where your enquiries come from, to how many “Tags” you obtain. Measure how each platform performs against your own marketing objectives and stick with it - all marketing practices take time and effort in order to see results. If you use Facebook for business, or have another strategy that works for you, I would love to hear from you. Feel free to email me on hannahhall@ mypaforaday.com. * Organically - people come across content through feeds, posts and pages of their contacts, rather than paid for/targeted advertising.

modern living for a moment, to rest, redefine your inner balance and of course, enhance your outer radiance. With no plans for my Saturday except some much needed “me time”, I was ushered into the spacious and sun-soaked mani/pedi area by very friendly faces. My watch and jewellery were placed in a little wooden box for safe keeping, as I leaned back in an easy chair, given strict instructions that “today is your day to relax”. I allowed my thoughts to drift whilst two lovely ladies (with military precision) buffed, scrubbed and polished my nails and toenails to shiny perfection. I was then escorted up a beautiful red staircase by Miss Lee – my very skillful and chatty therapist – to a serene massage room. The full body scrub and decadent Cleopatra bath were absolute bliss and I felt myself slip into deep comfort and relaxation. I then enjoyed a full body Amber Stone massage. As the spa’s name suggests, amber stones are renowned for their purifying effect on the body and soul, protecting it from stress and negative energy. Miss Lee guided me through each pressure point on my body,

relieving my sore muscles and joints while providing lifestyle, diet and skincare advice. She was very warm and knowledgeable. To top it all off, I headed to the hair salon for a wash and stimulating head massage. My hair was then efficiently coiffed into gorgeous curls by another attentive stylist and I left feeling happy and above all, glamorous. Amber Spa’s sleek yet inviting aesthetic, and the convenience of a variety of specialized treatments available under one roof is fantastic. I was highly impressed by the attention to detail and the exceptional customer service, friendliness and courtesy of the staff. I felt at ease, pampered and genuinely cared for during every moment of my spa experience. A very memorable and rejuvenating spa day indeed – I will certainly return to indulge again! From 10 - 17 April 2016, Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development, the Hili Rayhaan by Rotana, Al Ain welcomed the UAE’s first Art Biennale - "Earth dream".
40
artists from 32 countries took part in the event, organized by the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development.
Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development inaugurated the event, which exhibited more than 90 pieces of art. The Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra performed under conductor Riad Qudsi at a concert held in collaboration with the European orchestra. They expressed their delight to be participating in an event filled with music and art. "I am honored to participate in the Biennale by presenting local and international music." On a related note, maestro Riad Kudsi said that he and all the members of the orchestra, as well as the European orchestra are honored to participate in the First UAE Biennale of arts. He thanked the ministry of culture and community development for inviting the orchestra to participate in the Biennale and to present a message of peace to confirm that music and art are in service of humanity. Under the theme, Earth’s Dream, 20 of the artists also painted a 4x2 metre mural about the history of the UAE and the features of its development, which will be presented to the Abu Dhabi National Theatre. The event welcomed all art lovers to interact with the artists and participate in the entertaining artistic activities, such as drawing competitions and traditional fashion shows. Renowned Emirati artist, Mohammad Mandi wrote the names of several people of the public in Arabic Calligraphy on cards for them to keep as a souvenirs. artists who were astonished by the abilities of the Arabic Calligraphy. In addition to shedding light on the city of Al Ain as an important center for artistic exhibits and other cultural activities, the Biennale also allowed the Emirati artists to learn about the different schools of art around the world, participating in artistic discussions with their peers. Moreover, the Biennale contained several workshops dedicated to everyone, allowing the visitors to learn about major archeological, historic and cultural sites in the UAE. Inspired by its name “Earth Dream”, the event was a testament to the power of humanity in a melting pot of talent congregated in the beautiful Garden City and demonstrating the majestic power and beauty of peace and harmony through creative expression. Shaikh Nahyan praised the event as a huge success and hailed it as a symbol of connection among different generations. He added that holding the event in Al Ain was due to its growing importance as a centre of culture, art and knowledge, and for its rich history and heritage. He marvelled at the many UAE talented artists with great potential capable of producing astounding works of art and finally, he attributed the UAE’s foremost position in arts and culture as a result of the seeds planted by the country’s founder Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. A very special thanks goes out to the sponsors whose generosity and unwavering support helped make the event an enormous success: Hili Rayhaan by Rotana, Clacket Media, Eastern Motors LLC, UAEU, Emirates Autism Society

- and Not Just Because She Channeled Her Inner Beyoncé
It’s no secret that Jennifer Hudson can hit that high note like a pro, so when she does karaoke, you can expect a show. That’s just what happened on Monday night when the Oscar winner stopped by Planet Rose in N.Y.C. with her castmates from the Broadway musical The Color Purple. They worked the stage to “Crazy in Love,” channeling their inner Beyoncé, and the 34-year-old songstress even sang her own track, “Where You At.” But it wasn’t all smooth sailing and hitting the high notes. “Then I had to do my fav song to sing at karaoke, ‘Never Loved a Man’ by Aretha Franklin! Well my first try didn’t go too well,” she captioned a video in which she missed her cue.
with cast members Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Mark Hamill, and got a private tour of the set. No word yet on whether or not they learned who Rey’s parents are, but Hamill did tweet that he had a question of his own to ask: “Finally, a chance to get an informed answer on whether being Leia’s brother makes me a prince.” By: Kerrie Mitchell
Zareen Khan takes on body shamers! A few days back, Bollywood actor Zareen Khan posted pictures on Instagram from her teenage days when she was overweight. She also spoke about body shaming, because she feels that it is an issue that almost everyone has to deal with, especially during their adolescent years. Soon enough, as a result of her post, the actor's inbox was filled with messages congratulating her on her "incredible weightloss journey". Out of all the messages, a long letter written by an anonymous fan impressed her a lot. "The fan is overweight, and has been dealing with this issue for a long time. It has led her to maintain a low-key lifestyle. However, Zareen's post filled her with positivity. The fan also praised the actor for posting the images on a social-networking site," says an insider. She felt that not many actresses today would have liked to reveal how they looked before they entered Bollywood. But, Zareen is an exception. "She is confident, and doesn't get affected by people commenting

on her weight. The actor is training under Abbas Ali (Shahid Kapoor's trainer), and works out every day for two hours without fail. She has also recently taken up a 100-day workout challenge during which she plans to tone her body within the set time frame," adds the insider. We tried reaching the actor, but she remained unavailable for a comment.

GoPro launching new virtual reality camera, online platform The race to create both the hardware and the software that will drive the emerging virtual reality market is heating up, and now GoPro has unveiled its latest plans to support VR filmmakers and fans. At this week's NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) event in Las Vegas, the company will unveil a new VR camera and launch a new VR platform for sharing immersive videos. GoPro Odyssey VR camera will cost $15,000 and arrive
in November First, GoPro will show off its new Omni VR camera, which features six synchronized cameras in what the company calls a spherical array, but the housing itself looks more like a rounded square. The six Hero4 cameras, plus the aluminum rig, which is lightweight and made for action shots, will be offered for $4,999 and will allow users to capture 8K video.
Hands-on with Sony’s PlayStation VR: The virtual reality dark horse It’s official, 2016 is the year of virtual reality. But you probably can’t afford it. Systems like Oculus Rift (from Facebook) and HTC Vive (from HTC and Valve) are too pricey for many of us. That’s because in addition to the Rift and Vive’s already hefty price tags — they sell for $600 and $800 respectively — they also require you to have a high-end PC, which will cost you at minimum another $1,000. But there’s a dark horse in the virtual reality wars: Sony’s PlayStation VR. Formally announced back in March, the PSVR is both less expensive than
its rivals — bundles run $500 — and doesn’t require a hardcore PC to operate; instead, it runs off your standard PlayStation 4. (The standard PSVR pack will cost $400, but it won’t include the Camera or Move controllers. To get those you’ll have to get the special pre-order bundle for $500 — or else you could presumably purchase everything separately.) I spent some time with the PSVR during a recent press event in New York, and believe that, while the system could be the first VR headset for the masses, it still has a few drawbacks. Tesla owners can now try Autopilot for free for one month The first time any driver sits behind the wheel of a car and removes their hands, letting the vehicle drive itself, is an experience that’s not easily forgotten. While self-driving cars aren’t for everyone, Tesla is letting owners of its Model S and Model X cars decide for themselves. The company has started allowing owners of those models that they are free to try the company’s Autopilot feature at no additional cost for one month. After that, the manufacturer will tell them how to make the feature permanent in their vehicles via a software update. Tesla’s Autopilot has undergone a long testing phase and uses an array of sensors and programs to navigate the
curves on the road, follow the flow of traffic and detect the cars around you. It also lets you change lanes in one tap and will park the car for you at the end of your journey. So how much does the luxury cost? All Tesla cars that were produced after 2014 have the hardware compatibility to use Autopilot but owners were required to choose whether they wanted it or not. Anyone who chose to pay the $2,500 fee when they purchased the car was automatically granted access when Tesla started rolling out the feature last year. However, anyone who didn’t choose it initially has to now pay $3,000 for the software. The Source

lavours, the main restaurant of Hilton Al Ain, has been officially certified by the Food Control Authority with the Weqaya program, as the first restaurant in Al Ain where diners can experience authentic healthy food.
The topic of healthy lifestyle has become an increasing concern in the United Arab Emirates. People pay more attention to what they eat, not only in terms of quality but also with regards to the influence of the products and how healthy the food is. From the industry point of view, it all comes down to the healthy food items available at the restaurants, thus providing food producers with an opportunity to get officially certified by the Weqaya program. The Weqaya Nutrition program contributes to the reduction of risk factors associated with major noncommunicable diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer, through public awareness on healthy food options available in restaurants and food outlets. In collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA), the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi is adding the Weqaya logo to the healthy food items on restaurants’ menus if all requested criteria of the

Weqaya program has been met by the food producer. The healthy concept of Flavours restaurant’s menu at Hilton Al Ain has been created by executive chef Inan Dogru. Originally from Turkey, Inan brought with him a wealth of culinary experience to delight every diner’s taste buds. The importance of healthy food at the restaurants has been explained by Inan: “What are the guest’s preferences and how to achieve their expectations are always top priorities for us at Hilton Al Ain. I think the concept of healthy and at the same time tasty food is really important nowadays for each of us, therefore I decided to take it even more seriously and to prove that at Flavours restaurant we serve officially certified healthy food - low in fat, low in salt and rich in fibre.” Besides the buffet, guests can enjoy the a la carte menu, which has been launched recently, with healthy food options easily recognizable by the Weqaya logo. Flavours restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week. As well, the guests can enjoy Friday brunch every Friday from 1:00pm until 4:00pm. little bloodless coup isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Look at Qatar. In 1995, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani ousted his father and took the country’s reins. He has transformed this former pearl-fishing outpost, already one of the richest countries in the world thanks to oil and natural gas. Set on a peninsula jutting into the Persian Gulf, bordered on the south by Saudi Arabia, tiny Qatar-the size of Connecticut-is transforming itself into the Gulf’s “next” destination. Hoping to build on the success of Abu Dhabi and learn from the mistakes of Dubai, the capital city of Doha is pitching itself as a player on the world stage. I. M. Pei was called in to design the Museum of Islamic Art. The skyline, with its perfume bottle–shaped towers, is being rewritten every day. Cranes litter the air. Satellite branches of American universities have taken root. After a massive PR campaign, the country won its bid to host the 2022 World Cup. Doha is looking to the future. But all this rapid progress comes with a price. “Everyone is a little crazy here,” Kevin, a recent immigrant from Kenya, informs me. “How could they not be? Just a few years ago they were riding camels, and now you give them a V-8 engine.” Out here, where a gallon of gasoline is half the price of a bottle of water, the trappings of Western culture are being imported nearly as
fast as the Filipino and Indian immigrants who are charged with maintaining them. Foreigners outnumber Qatari nationals six to one. “And I don’t know why they need to reclaim land when there’s all this empty desert just sitting here,” Kevin points out. But things in Doha have their own logic. The Pearl-Qatar, the 988-acre man-made island Kevin is specifically lamenting, has condos, hotels, three marinas with mooring for 1,002 boats, and more than 2 million square feet of retail space - much of it still sitting empty. Over near the Rolls-Royce showroom, the French Institution Les Deux Magots has a satellite café at the water’s edge. The rack of lamb is tasty, but a signature dessert of mille-feuille is conspicuously absent from the menu. The maître d’ shrugs. “The chef is French, but everyone else is from Indonesia,” he says. “No one can make it to the standard we need, so…” His lips purse. “We are part restaurant, part school.” Over at Souk Waqif, Doha’s recently rebuilt main marketplace, camels loiter in a pen
beside a parking lot peppered with Ferraris. Inside the ramparts, the lanes are crooked. The walls sag. The stalls overflow with fabrics and appliances, birdcages and the smell of spices. The intent here was to create a souk in the old style, and while I can’t help but feel a bit like I’m on a Hollywood back lot, it’s a relief to see a gesture toward Arab culture in an Arab land. The place swarms with local life on a Friday night. Across town, in the heart of the Aspire Zone, I enter Villaggio, a sprawling shopping outlet. A canal - with gondolas-snakes its way under a ceiling painted full of puffy Venetian clouds. It’s the place to see and be seen for the younger Qatari set. Teenage girls wander past Marks & Spencer and Café Lenôtre, texting in their black abayas and giggling behind their niqabs. Missi, a professional soccer player from Cameroon, stands in line beside the Western Union stall with two dozen other immigrants, waiting to wire money home. “It’s a strange life here,” he says.
sky, and I walk through the park that lines the Corniche, Doha’s busiest street, along the crescent-shaped bay. Sitting on the terrace at Al Mourjan restaurant on the edge of the Persian Gulf, I feel a slight breeze moving the hot night air. I lean back, puffing on a water pipe filled with rose-scented tobacco, and watch a dhow drift by, its white sail reflecting the light of the waning moon. The neon of the crazyquilt skyline is over my shoulder. I sip my mango juice and watch a henna tattoo artist beside me draw an intricate pattern across the fingers of a young Lebanese girl. The singer on the nearby stage launches into an Arabic translation of “My Way.” The limestone walls of I. M. Pei’s museum are glowing a radiant orange across the bay. I take the small tongs and gently rotate the charcoal atop my shisha and puff away; a smile spreads across my face. It might all be an arbitrary invention out here in the middle of a barren desert, but there’s something about this place that has crept under my skin - I’m glad I was here near the start.
