Mom still kept a smile on her face With a cool and calm head, she would send me to bed Without tucking me in all curled But deep down I know that she loves me so And I wouldn’t trade her for the world I was just a kid when I wrote this poem for my mother and never have these words rung truer than almost half a century later. And never has the appreciation for what it is to be a mother become more meaningful than after having become a parent and being blessed with the joy of witnessing, first hand, my loving wife go through the motions of giving everything she has and then some, to our two boys. It is relatively easy for most women to conceive and become a mother but to be crowned with the official title “Mommy” is another achievement altogether. This requires an unwavering dedication to a 24/7 job that does not include, pay, vacations, sick leave or even the luxury of sleep during most of the early years. “Whatever you give a woman, she will make greater. If you give her sperm, she'll give you a baby. If you give her a house, she'll give you a home. If you give her groceries, she'll give you a meal. If you give her a smile, she'll give you her heart.” When it comes to our mothers, give them our best; it’s what they did for us over the years without asking for anything other than respect and kindness in return. If you still have a mother, take the time to call; get in your car or hop on a plane or train and make the journey to visit the one woman in your life that made life itself possible. Enjoy each others company during the course of the relatively short time we are granted to do so. Our lives are, indeed, short, so live to the fullest as many precious moments as possible with that special woman we call Mom.

They are loads of fun, people-oriented, obedient yet curious and have a sharp intelligence that still shines through beneath their hilariously goofy nature. Originating in Newfoundland, where they were first bred to help fishermen and hunters to retrieve their nets and catch, Labradors are now commonly used as guide-dogs and comfort animals for the disabled. Golden Retrievers are very similar to Labs, with slight differences between British, American and Canadian types. They are all highenergy dogs, so they need plenty of exercise! MINISTRY OF CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENVIRONMENT BANS IMPORTS OF LIVE BIRDS FROM BULGARIA Move follows reports of outbreak of H5 bird flu virus Keeping abreast of trade partners’ health status through their published reports on the website of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), the Department of Animal Development & Health at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has issued a temporary ban on live birds from Bulgaria. The move follows reports of an outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5 bird flu virus in Bulgaria. MOCCAE announced that it has taken the following precautionary measures: 1. Temporarily banned the import of all species of domestic and wild life birds, ornamental birds, chicks, hatching eggs and their non-heattreated by-products from Bulgaria. 2. Banned the import of poultry meat and non-heat-treated products and table eggs from the region of Dobric, Bulgaria. His Excellency Sheikh Dr Majid bin Sultan Al Qassimi, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Food Diversity Sector and Director of Animal Development & Health Department at MOCCAE, said: “These measures reiterate the Ministry's keenness in achieving its strategic objectives including enhancing biosecurity levels and eliminating pathogens before they enter the country. In doing so, the Ministry prevents bird flu and related risks and their impacts on the country’s poultry health and safety, in addition to protecting public health and well-being.” MOCCAE is carefully scrutinizing documentation accompanying consignments (certificates of origin, health certificates and halal certificates, among others) of food products shipped into the country. The Ministry is also conducting sensory detection to ensure that the quality of the products complies with the UAE’s stringent standards. Samples of food products from shipments are transferred to laboratories for the necessary tests to ensure they are safe and fit to enter the country. 8

Fifth Annual Women’s Heritage Walk Honours the Strength and Courage of the Women of the UAE

54 PARTICIPANTS WILL EMBARK ON THE MONUMENTAL 120 KILOMETRE JOURNEY FROM AL AIN TO ABU DHABI, FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THEIR ANCESTORS

he Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) welcomed 54 women to Al Ain as they prepared to embark upon an historical journey, tracing the footsteps of generations of Emirati women along the 120 kilometre trek from Al Ain to Abu Dhabi through the desert. Honouring the traditions and customs of the UAE by following an ancient path that was travelled twice a year, the fifth annual Women’s Heritage Walk brings together women of all nationalities and backgrounds to take part in this unique experience. This annual initiative is supported by DCT Abu Dhabi as part of its mission to preserve and 10

promote the unique cultural heritage of the UAE. The participants were welcomed by DCT Abu Dhabi employees upon their arrival at Al Ain National Museum and walked through Al Ain’s historic Oasis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where they met with guides that shed light on traditional Bedouin life in the desert. They were then greeted by traditional Ayala dancers in celebration of the monumental journey they are undertaking. Participants then walked out beyond the city and into the desert where they will take part in traditional handicraft workshops in their desert camps and will learn more about Emirati customs and traditions at different stages along the journey.

This year, as in the past years, the ladies will spend one final pampered evening dining and bonding in the comfortable surroundings of Al Ain’s Al Bada Hotel & Resort. The Al Bada, an icon of Emirati heritage and hospitality has, since day 1, been an integral part of the WHW and remains committed to hosting the “Sand Sisters” prior to embarking on their annual journey from a starting point near the hotel. They will arrive in Abu Dhabi on 13th March where they will be welcomed with a celebration at Manarat Al Saadiyat. fter almost 7 years of living the expat life in the UAE, I am still amazed at the places and events I continue to discover tucked away in some of the most awe-inspiring corners of this tiny desert nation. It always amazes me that so many expats participate in mass exoduses come vacation time when, truly, there is so much to discover in a land I like to lovingly think of as kissed by the sand, sun and sea. And discover we did, on a weekend get-away mission with the family at our favourite desert island hosting an annual epic event that evokes creativity, a healthy competitive spirit and best of all, conjures soaring childhood memories for the adults while creating unforgettable experiences for the little members of a bonding family.

family. Guests were invited to visit Sir Bani Yas Island for the day to enjoy kite building and flying over the islandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s northern beach. While beach and water activities, such as kayaking and banana boat rides helped to cool down in between the ambitious kite flying competition, a complimentary sausage sizzle and soft drinks marathon catered to the physical well-being of the high-flying spirits. The kite competition started at noon and awarded participants for their kite creations in three different categories: the most creative kite, the largest kite and the most outstanding animal-shaped kite. Participants were provided with a kite kit to build their kites on the beach during the day. Only self-made kites were allowed to participate in the competition. The award for the most creative kite went to an Eating Dragon Kite, whose creator not only managed to build an extremely creative kite, but also sent little treats into the sky to feed the dragon during the competition. A stingray kite, which measured a total size of almost 4 square metres was awarded as the largest kite of the event. The most outstanding animal-shaped kite award

went to a colourful Rainbow Fish Kite. Kite Fest 2018 proved to be a famously successful event on Sir Bani Yas Island and it was awesome to see so many visitors enjoy the fabulous day. The creativity and detailed effort that went into so many of the hand-crafted kites was truly astounding and every team deserved an award for simply participating in the fun. We may not have won any of the awards but our kite did fly, which was more than we could have hoped for and simply being a part of the event and revelling in all the excitement was the high point of a day that ended being pampered by the outstanding service of a hotel staff that takes hospitality to an entirely new level. Exhausted from a day teeming with excitement, we lay in our comfy hotel beds listening to the waves caress the beach and, naturally, dreaming up the winning kite design for next year's adventureâ&#x20AC;Ś Kite Fest 2018 was made possible by the generous support of sponsors and media partners including: Yalla Abu Dhabi, M.H Enterprises, Al Ahlia, Al Ain Water and Barakat Fruits and Vegetables.

Struggling for Gender Equality International Women’s Day has been observed around the world since 1911. The movement started with a desire for women to be able to participate equally in society with men. Celebrated every year on March 8, International Women’s Day provides us all with the opportunity to take stock of the progress towards gender equality, and to honour the many ways women contribute and have contributed to our global society. But, wait a minute. Doesn’t gender equality already exist in many parts of the world? While in many nations, charters of rights and freedoms do guarantee gender equality, women are still facing significant challenges. Women continue to be under-represented in politics and still earn less than men in the workforce. They are still responsible for the majority of family responsibilities, and they experience gender-based violence at higher rates than men. Despite the many great improvements that have been achieved for women since the first International Women’s Day in 1911, there is still a significant amount of work to be done before gender equity is achieved around the globe. In fact, there is evidence that, globally, the gap in gender equality is widening. The 2017 World Economic Forum Global Gender Gap Report measures gender equality benchmarks in four areas within 144 countries. Those areas include economic

participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment. The data predicts that global gender parity won’t be achieved for more than 200 years. We need to see more progress. On the positive side, this past year, we have witnessed a strong global movement for gender equality gaining momentum. People around the world are experiencing significant shifts in their thinking about patriarchy and its ingrained, negative effects on gender equality. In response to this shift, the theme for International Women’s Day 2018 is Push for Progress. We need to remain motivated and united in our struggle for gender equality in order to change long-standing inequitable policies, practices, beliefs and traditions. Collectively, we can all play a part. International Women’s Day belongs to all of us. As feminist Gloria Steinem said, “The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization, but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights.” Together, we can use our voices to push for progress and help make gender equality a reality everywhere-we can use our voices at our workplaces, at community gatherings, in our classrooms and at our dinner tables. Do what you can to make a positive difference for women in their struggle for gender equality, on International Women’s Day and every day.

Nisha, one of the delightful ushers explained, “people are really impressed with our friendly meet and greet service and have even asked to take photos with us. We also offer a stroller service for the little guests that come to visit. It’s a real pleasure to be able to help people and experience the difference our service makes in the overall visitor satisfaction.” We are all familiar with the headaches associated with parking, especially when planning a visit to the hospital. NMC has provided a cure for that headache via their quick and efficient valet parking service for VIP’s, ladies, families or the elderly. And, if you are an able-bodied guest but are having trouble finding a parking spot, simply speak to the friendly valet team and they will arrange a golf cart service to taxi you back and forth from the added parking available at the rear of the building – it’s now that easy! We caught up with Pawan, the golf cart driver who told us how much easier he was making the experience for the many patients he assisted each day. Sudhesh, from valet parking told us that his busy post was responsible for parking between 70 – 80 vehicles per day. He went on to explain, “the families and ladies are especially happy about our service.” Along with the sumptuous newly renovated and elegantly appointed VIP rooms, the hospital has gone beyond expectations by offering an exclusive butler and P.A./coordinator service as well as VIP spa facilities. Sheikh Zayed as the ‘Personality of the Year’ for the 28th Abu Dhabi International Book Fair

IN RECOGNITION OF HIS INTELLECTUAL AND CULTURAL CONTRIBUTIONS IN BUILDING AN INNOVATIVE SOCIETY n celebration of the Year of Zayed, and in appreciation of his numerous intellectual and cultural contributions to shape a society centered on knowledge and innovation, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) announced today the selection of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan as the ‘Personality of the Year’ for the 28th edition of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF). The event, to be held from 25 April to 1 May 2018 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, will witness the participation of a number of Arab and foreign publishing houses. Choosing Sheikh Zayed as this edition’s ‘Personality of the Year’ celebrates his profoundly effective role in shaping today’s UAE society. Founded on the premise that the educated individual is what makes a nation wealthy, rather than money, Sheikh Zayed endeavored throughout his life to sustain a balanced community by preserving traditions and heritage, while also adopting a culture of innovation, and acceptance. The book fair will encompass a wide-ranging professional and cultural programme featuring word-class activities and symbols of thought and literature. For its 28th edition, ADIBF will place special focus on e-publishing, digital content, e-applications, and the latest technologies in the publishing world, providing the ideal space for content developers and service providers to showcase their products and services to the publishing community. Smoking Rates Around the World “Tobacco is the only legal drug that kills many of its users when used exactly as intended by manufacturers.” That is the first sentence of the World Health Organization’s 2015 global report on smoking trends around the world. Smoking around the world On its website, the World Health Organization says that in 2015, over 1.1 billion people smoked tobacco. The organization also states that while tobacco use is decreasing in many countries, it “appears to be increasing in WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region and the African Region.”

The WHO lists on its websites these three important facts about tobacco use: • Tobacco kills up to half of its users. • Tobacco kills more than 7 million people each year. More than 6 million of those deaths are from direct tobacco use. Around 890, 000 non-smokers die from second-hand smoke. • Nearly 80% of the world's more than 1 billion smokers live in low- and middle-income countries. In 2016, the World Bank report “The global state of smoking in 5 charts,” said that from 2000 to 2015 smoking rates went up in 27 countries. The report said most of them were low and middle-income countries. The report added that in Indonesia, the rate went up by almost 30 percent. It said more than 70 million people smoke in Indonesia. The WHO says there is a “tobacco crisis.” Experts say that if we do nothing to change this trend, the number of people who die from tobacco each year worldwide will rise to 8 million by 2030. The article also states that in every country, the smoking rates for men are much higher than those for women. U.S. smoking rates at historic low The American Lung Association (ALA) says fewer Americans smoke cigarettes now than before tobacco control policies were established.

In its yearly report, the ALA says smoking rates among adults and teens are at historic lows. It says a little more than 15.5 percent of American adults, and eight percent of high school students, smoke cigarettes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the U.S. also researches smoking rates. It says the rates in the U.S. decreased from 20.9 percent in 2005 to 15.5 percent in 2016. Connie Graffunder is director of the CDC's Office on Smoking and Health. She says "more people are quitting, and those who continue to smoke are smoking less." However, CDC research also shows that almost 38 million American adults still smoke. And the American Lung Association says tobacco use and exposure to second-hand smoke affects some groups and areas of the United States more than others. Thomas Carr is the Director of National Policy for the American Lung Association and writer of its 2018 report, The State of Tobacco Control. Carr says smoking rates are close to 30 percent or higher among poor people, less educated people, Native Americans and some other ethnic groups. Carr says that "the tobacco industry advertises more to some of these groups." He adds that often there are more tobacco products available in stores in lowincome areas. Teenagers are more likely to smoke if their friends or parents smoke. Studies show that most people who smoke start before they are 18. Some start as young as age 11, according to The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. Carr calls it a childhood disease. "It starts in your teens and then once you're hooked, you can't get off of it." What can countries do to stop people from smoking? The American Lung Association advocates for the U.S. government to make buying tobacco products for those under age 21 illegal. The group says this would lead to a drop in the number of young smokers. The ALA says if middle and high school students cannot get cigarettes, they are less likely to start smoking. To date, five states in the U.S. -- California, Oregon, Maine, Hawaii and New Jersey -- have raised the age to 21. The WHO says that there are other things countries can do to limit tobacco use. Experts at the WHO experts say studies show that anti-tobacco advertisements can reduce the number of children who smoke. This is especially true if the advertising uses picture warnings on the packaging. The WHO adds that bans on tobacco advertising can reduce the use of tobacco products. Higher taxes can also lower the number of people who use tobacco. This is especially true with young and poor people. The CDC says smokers die, on average, 10 years earlier than non-smokers.

Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi Employees Remove Over 800 Kgs of Waste from Area Outside

Al Wathba Wetland Reserve

As part of the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD)’s intensive campaign launched earlier this year under the theme ‘Together We Make the Difference’, more than 100 of EAD’s employees cleaned the area outside the boundaries of Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, the only site in the UAE that the Greater Flamingo breeds regularly. The reserve is also an internationally recognised wetland around the world and a popular tourism destination locally. The campaign is the third in a series launched by EAD in January to mark The Year of Zayed with an aim to engage the community in environmental conservation across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The four-hour clean-up resulted in the removal of 864 Kgs of waste, mainly construction waste and plastic and glass from the nearby labour camp. H.E. Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, EAD’s Secretary General and one of the volunteers in this campaign, said: "The commitment of our employees to this campaign reflects the passion and vision the late Sheikh Zayed had for the environment. He valued the importance of positive action to protect and conserve the environment and always stressed that the environment should not be seen as a matter only for Government, but something that should concern us all”.

Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Executive Director, Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity at EAD said, "Al Wathba Wetland Reserve was designated as a reserve in 1998 by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan”. "Since then EAD has been managing the reserve, and keeping the area inside and outside the boundaries of the reserve clean. This will positively reflect on preserving the environment of this important nature reserve, which supports a rich variety of wildlife, including 320 species of invertebrates, 10 mammals, 16 reptiles, 260 species of birds, and 35 species of plants,” Dr. Shaikha added. She also said, “The reserve, which consists of several different habitats, including a fresh water lake, saline lakes, tall reed marshes, gravel plains, sand dunes and Sabkha, was designated in 2013 as the first Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in Abu Dhabi Emirate, gaining international recognition and protection”. Al Dhaheri added that EAD plans to organise more clean-up campaigns throughout the year to give more members of the community the opportunity to participate. The UAE’s Approach to Solar Energy: An Act of its own Volition or to Meet a Necessity

APPROACH AIMS TO ACHIEVE HIGHER GOALS OF SAVING MILLIONS OF LIVES AND ENSURING A BETTER FUTURE FOR GENERATIONS TO COME The United Arab Emirates has been relentless in its pursuit of a greener future, locally developing solar technologies and deploying them globally since 2006. UAE-led solar projects have significantly contributed to reducing the cost of opting for solar energy around the world. Keeping that in mind and given the fact that the UAE - one of the 10 largest oil producing countries in the world - has committed to clean energy resource development at a time when oil prices recorded over US$80 per barrel and peaked two years later at US$130 a barrel, I would like to raise a very important question: Was the UAE acting of its own volition or to meet a necessity? The inclination of our wise leadership to reaffirm the UAE’s position at the forefront of global efforts to address common challenges shows that the drive to increase the local dependence on renewable energy, particularly solar power, and boost its demand globally was indeed an act of its own volition that targeted creating a better future for generations to come. The approach taken by the UAE leadership was underscored by the exacerbated level of these challenges, such as the impact of climate change on millions of people around the world. It aimed to meet the growing demand for energy of at least 25% over the next decade, driven by the growth of the global economy, which was difficult to achieve through a single source of energy. Therefore, it was essential for the world to strive to provide the required

energy supplies through safe, sustainable and environmentally friendly sources that contribute to reducing the impacts of climate change. Since 2006, the UAE launched several projects and initiatives in this regard. A testimony of the UAE’s leading global position as the capital of clean energy is that Abu Dhabi was unanimously approved as the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in 2009. A major turning point in the efforts exerted by the UAE to bolster clean energy use is the establishment of Masdar, the regional leader and a major international player in renewable energy development. Masdar helps the UAE go the extra mile, by scrutinizing top-notch global technologies and customizing them to suit the country’s specific needs to optimize their returns. The volume of investments so far made by Masdar is around US$1.7 billion in global renewable energy projects, which have a capacity of about 2.7 GW. In the past decade, the UAE has intensified its efforts towards deploying solar energy solutions. The country has secured a prominent place in the international solar energy industry through developing worldclass solar energy projects, including the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Complex in Dubai, which is the world’s largest Concentrated Solar Power project in the world, using the Independent Power Producer model and generating 5000 megawatts when completed in 2030.

The Zayed Renewable Energy Complex in Abu Dhabi is another major solar energy project in the UAE. Furthermore, the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 targets increasing the contribution of clean energy in the overall national energy mix to 50% by 2050, saving US$190 billion of the overall energy costs until 2050. As for its global efforts in this field, the UAE, driven by its commitment to climate change mitigation and improving the lives of hundreds of millions of people living in communities most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, has officially announced last February that it will join the International Solar Alliance, which aims to help developing countries harness 1,000 GW of solar by 2030. The UAE has also launched many initiatives to provide the necessary funding to carry out and develop renewable energy generation projects, such as the initiatives taken by Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and Masdar. The UAE, thanks to its wise leadership, remains steadfast in its efforts to support and deploy renewable energy solutions, particularly solar energy, both locally and internationally. These efforts have more profound goals to achieve than a mere diversification of the energy sources and preparing for the post-oil era. These goals ultimately aim to save millions of lives that are at risk due to climate change around the world and ensure a better, more sustainable future for generations to come. The Source

Her Turn: UNHCR Report Reveals Critical

Gap in Education for Refugee Girls “Her Turn”, a new report from UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, reveals that refugee girls at secondary level are only half as likely to enrol in school as their male peers, even though girls make up half of the school-age refugee population. Access to education is a fundamental human right. Yet, for millions of women and girls among the world's growing refugee population, education remains an aspiration, not a reality. For all refugee children around the world, the school gates are a great deal harder to prise open than they are for their non-refugee peers. For refugee girls, it is even tougher to find – and keep – a place in the classroom. As they get older, refugee girls face more marginalization and the gender gap in secondary schools grows wider. “It is time for the international community to recognize the injustice of denying refugee girls and women an education,” said Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees. “These findings are a global wake-up call, and I urge all to join us in demanding: ‘It’s her turn’.” UNHCR’s report reveals that social and cultural conventions often result in boys being prioritized over girls to attend school. lack of appropriate toilet facilities and menstrual supplies can block refugee girls’ access to schools. Adding to the challenge, the cost of books, uniforms and the journey to school can be prohibitive for refugee families. “Finding solutions to the challenges refugee girls face as they strive to go to school requires action right across the board – from national education ministries to teacher training institutions, in communities and classrooms,” added Grandi. “There are formidable barriers to overcome. We are calling for an international effort to turn the tide.” To help more refugee girls get a quality education, UNHCR’s report highlights a number of actions and policies that are both effective and deliverable. If refugee adults are able to work and support their families, they are more likely to let their children stay in school. No girl should miss school because the journey to school is too far or too dangerous. Refugee girls need better protection from harassment, sexual assault and kidnap on the way to school. There is also an urgent need to recruit and train more female teachers from within both host and refugee communities to ensure they promote best practice and guard against behaviour that will deter girls from setting foot in the classroom. The report notes that for refugee girls, a quality education is protective. It reduces vulnerability to exploitation, sexual and gender-based violence, teenage pregnancy and child marriage. Additionally, if all women received a primary level education, child deaths from diarrhoea, malaria and pneumonia would fall. Education is also empowering. The further girls progress with their schooling, the more they develop leadership skills, entrepreneurship, selfreliance and resilience. These advantages are clearly illustrated by the individuals featured in the report – from the Burundian and Rwandan teenagers in Paysannat L School just outside Mahama refugee camp, who study alongside one another and who have become great friends, to the Rohingya teacher who devotes her evenings to teaching the many new arrivals from that community fleeing the violence in Myanmar. “If we continue to neglect refugee girls’ education, it is evident that the consequences will be felt for generations,” said Grandi. “It is time to make refugee girls’ education a priority.” Only 61 per cent of refugee children have access to primary education, compared to an international average of 91 per cent. At secondary level, 23 per cent of refugee adolescents go to school, compared to 84 per cent globally.

It is time to make education a priority for refugee girls and women. These findings are a global wake-up call, and I urge all to join us in demanding: ‘It’s her turn’.

There are many types of reptiles like small geckos, lizards, turtles, tortoises, small snakes, big snakes and many more. Deciding what type and size of reptile depends on the amount of space, environment, cost and time available; there is usually a reptile to suit everyone. The good thing about reptiles is that they often require less feeding, cleaning and time than pets like cats, dogs, birds and rodents. This is not to say that they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need proper care and attention. Reptiles can be very interesting and come in beautiful shapes, colours and habits. They often live longer than some other species, which makes them a long term commitment. Most reptiles can live content in a suitable enclosure, tank or vivarium. CRISPY HONEY GARLIC CHICKEN WINGS Crispy Honey Garlic Chicken Wings - Crispy fried wings get tossed in a very easy to make honey garlic sauce just before serving. This method ensures the wings stay super crispy in the sweet sticky, finger licking good glaze. INGREDIENTS: • 2 tbsp olive oil • 4 cloves minced garlic • 1 cup honey • 1/4 cup soy sauce • 1 tsp black pepper • 2 cups flour • 3 tbsp powdered ginger to taste • 1 tsp cayenne pepper more or less to taste • 1 1/2 tbsp salt • 2 tsp black pepper • 3 lbs chicken wings • 2 eggs • 3 tbsp cold water

DIRECTIONS 1. In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat the olive oil and garlic. Saute to soften the garlic but do not let it brown. 2. Add the honey, soy sauce, and 1 tsp black pepper. 3. Simmer together for 5-10 minutes, remove from heat and allow to cool thoroughly. Watch this carefully as it simmers because it can foam up over the pot very easily. 4. Mix together the flour, ginger, cayenne pepper, salt and 1 tbsp black pepper. 5. Whisk together the eggs and water to make an egg wash. 6. Wash the wings, pat dry, trim the tips and cut them into sections. 7. Dip the wing pieces into the egg wash and then toss in the flour mixture. Drop the coated wings into a preheated 350 degree F deep fryer, filled with canola, peanut, or soy oil. 8. Fry until golden brown, about 15-20 min depending on the size of the wing pieces. While still hot out of the oil toss the wing pieces in a large bowl with some of the honey garlic sauce. Serve immediately.

Geography Norway is bordered by Russia and Finland to the northeast, Sweden to the east, the Skagerrak Sea to the south and the Norwegian Sea to the west. Norway is roughly the size of New Mexico, and covers around 324,000 sq. kilometers of land. The terrain of Norway is glaciated, with nearly one-third of the country lying north of the Arctic Circle. The other two-thirds is mountains, broken by fertile valleys and small, scattered plains. Long fjords, numerous islands and minor indentations characterize the coastline. In fact, Norway’s coastline is one of the most rugged and longest of the world. Oslo, both the capital and largest city in Norway, has a population of 538,500, about 22% of which are immigrants. Oslo is a popular tour destination within the country. As of 2006, it is the most expensive city in the world.

‫البح ريات‪ ،‬أي نهاية إحداهن وبداية األخرى‪.‬‬ ‫وينطبق نفس اليشء عىل ساحل فنلندا‪ ،‬والذي يتسم‬ ‫بوجود حوايل ‪ 95،000‬جزيرة‪ ،‬معظمها جزر صخرية‬ ‫صغرية‪ .‬يقول البحارة إن مياه األرخبيل الجنو ّيب الغر ّيب‪،‬‬ ‫التي تبدو كاملتاهة‪ ،‬ميثل اإلبحار فيها تحديً ا كب ًريا‪.‬‬ ‫هذا‪ ،‬ويبلغ إجام ّيل طول الساحل ‪ 40،000‬كيلوم رت‪ ،‬مبا‬ ‫فيه شواطئ الجزر‪ .‬غري أن شواطئ البح ريات أطول‪ ،‬إذ‬ ‫تبلغ يف مجملها حوايل ‪ 130،000‬كيلوم رت‪ .‬يعني هذا‬ ‫أن فنلندا لديها ‪ 32‬م رتًا من الشواطئ لكل مواطن! وقد‬ ‫اعتاد الفنلنديون أن يجدوا املياه املفتوحة بالقرب منهم‬ ‫أينام كانوا‪.‬‬ ‫كام يُ ع ّد وجود املياه الكثرية مفي دًا للطيور أيضً ا‪ .‬ففي‬ ‫فصل الصيف‪ ،‬حيث األرايض الرطبة‪ ،‬تعيش الطيور‬ ‫املائية والعديد من أنواع البط والطيور املخوضة وطائر‬ ‫الكريك‪.‬‬ ‫وبالطبع‪ ،‬أينام وجدت املياه توجد األسامك‪ ،‬إذ يوجد يف‬ ‫فنلندا ‪ 61‬نو ًع ا من األسامك املحلية‪ ،‬تعيش معظمها يف‬ ‫املياه العذبة‪ .‬ومن العجيب أن كث ًريا من أسامك البح ريات‬ ‫تستطيع أن تعيش يف مياه بحر البلطيق‪ ،‬حيث تقل‬ ‫نسبة ملوحة املياه‪.‬‬ ‫ب راري البالند القطبية‬ ‫ت ُع ّد البالند‪ ،‬التي تقع يف أقىص شامل فنلندا‪ ،‬طب ًق ا‬ ‫للمعايري الفنلندية‪ ،‬غري مستقرة بدرجة كبرية‪ .‬وتشغل‬ ‫البالند حوايل ‪ % 28‬من مساحة فنلندا الكلية‪ ،‬غري أنه ال‬ ‫يقطنها سوى ‪ % 4‬من إجاميل عدد السكان‪.‬‬ ‫وتشمل السامت الطبيعية يف البالند مساحات شاسعة‬ ‫من الغابات الربية‪ ،‬والجبال املفتوحة‪ ،‬والنباتات‬

‫والحيوانات املتكيفة مع الظروف القطبية القاسية‪،‬‬ ‫باإلضافة إىل تنوع يف التضاريس ال يضاهيه أي مكان‬ ‫آخر يف فنلندا‪ .‬كام تتجىل االختالفات بني الفصول هنا‬ ‫أكرث من أي مكان آخ ر‪ ،‬حيث يتباين الثلج السميك‬ ‫والظالم اللذان ميي زان فصل الشتاء تباي ًن ا عجي ًب ا مع‬ ‫الصيف اللطيف يف أرض شمس منتصف الليل‪.‬‬ ‫توجد يف البالند التالل التي تكسوها الغابات‪ ،‬والجبال‬ ‫املفتوحة‪ .‬وال تتجاوز أعىل قمة للتالل ‪ 1300‬م رت‪ ،‬فوق‬ ‫مستوى سطح البح ر‪ ،‬غري أنه يف أقىص الشامل يصبح‬ ‫خط األشجار منخفضً ا للغاية حتى إن كث ًريا من قمم‬ ‫الجبال ال توجد بها أشجار‪.‬‬ ‫وأول ما ت راه عندما تتجه إىل أسفل التالل هو أشجار‬ ‫البتوال الجبلية املنخفضة‪ ،‬تتخللها بعض أشجار‬ ‫الصنوب ر‪ .‬غري أنه ال توجد الغابات الحقيقية إال يف‬ ‫املناطق الشجرية القليلة‪ ،‬والتي تكرث فيها أشجار‬ ‫الصنوبر أو التنوب‪ .‬كام قد توجد مستنقعات‬ ‫مفتوحة بني الغابات‪ ،‬منها مستنقعات كبرية للغاية‬ ‫يف املناطق املنخفضة‪.‬‬ ‫وت ُعد ‪ % 30‬تقري ًب ا من مساحة البالند محمية‪ ،‬مبا‬ ‫فيها أكرب حدائق فنلندا‪ ،‬والتي متتد مساحة ثالث منها‬ ‫ألكرث من ‪ 1000‬كيلومرت مربع‪ .‬باإلضافة إىل ذلك‪ ،‬ميكن‬ ‫مامرسة رعي الرنة وهي الحرفة املحلية التقليدية‬ ‫التي يعيش عليها البعض‪ ،‬يف معظم املناطق املحمية‬ ‫يف البالند‪.‬‬ ‫كام توجد بعض الحرف املهمة يف البالند مثل صيد‬ ‫الحيوانات وصيد األسامك‪ ،‬إىل جانب مجال السياحة‬ ‫املستحدث‪.‬‬

‫الجليدي األخ ري‪ ،‬مغطاة‬ ‫كانت فنلندا‪ ،‬خالل العرص‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫قاري سميك‪ .‬وقد سارت‬ ‫جليدي‬ ‫بالكامل بغطاء‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫تلك الكتلة بطيئة الحركة من الجليد تحت الصخور‬ ‫واملنحدرات لتحفر مسا ًرا للبح ريات‪ .‬وقد رسبت أنهار‬ ‫املياه الذائبة تحت الجليد تالالً من الرمال والحىص‪ ،‬التي‬ ‫تقف اآلن فوق املناطق املحيطة بها عىل شكل كثبان‬ ‫جليدية‪ ،‬قد ميتد طولها إىل ع رشات الكيلوم رتات‪.‬‬ ‫غري أن تلك الكثبان الجليدية ليست مرتفعة للغاية‪،‬‬ ‫إذ يندر أن يبلغ ارتفاعها أكرث من مائة م رت‪ .‬هذا‪ ،‬وال‬ ‫توجد يف فنلندا بصفة عامة عنارص ضخمة مثل الجبال‬ ‫العالية‪ ،‬أو املنحدرات البحرية الحادة‪ ،‬أو األنهار الواسعة‪.‬‬ ‫بل تبدو الطبيعة لطيفة وتتشكل من عنارص صغرية‬ ‫متنوع ة‪.‬‬ ‫وترتفع التضاريس كلام اتجهت رشقًا وشامالً‪ .‬وتظهر‬ ‫أكرب االختالفات يف االرتفاع يف البالند‪ ،‬التي ترتفع فيها‬ ‫كثري من قمم الجبال فوق خط األشجار‪.‬‬ ‫الغاباتواملستنقعات‬ ‫تُع ّد فنلندا الدولة األوروبية األوىل من حيث مساحة‬ ‫الغابات فيها‪ ،‬إذ تغطي األشجار حوايل ‪ % 70‬من‬ ‫مساحتها‪ .‬باإلضافة إىل ذلك‪ ،‬معظم غابات فنلندا‬ ‫صنوبرية‪ ،‬إذ تقع فنلندا عىل الحافة الغربية ملنطقة‬ ‫غابات التايغا الصنوبرية‪ ،‬التي متتد رشقًا يف روسيا‬ ‫وسيبرييا‪.‬‬ ‫هذا‪ ،‬وال ت زال الغابات طبيعية‪ ،‬أي ميكن القول بأنه مل‬ ‫تزرع فيها أي أشجار من مناطق أخرى‪ .‬أما أكرث األشجار‬ ‫الربي‪ ،‬والتنوب‬ ‫انتشا ًرا فيها‪ ،‬فهي أشجار الصنوبر‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫والبتوال الرنويجية‪ ،‬بالرغم من أن الغابات تتخللها أيضً ا‬ ‫أشجار الحور وجار املاء والغب رياء‪.‬‬ ‫الرغم من أن الغابات تضم أنوا ًع ا قليلة من األشجار‪،‬‬ ‫فهي تختلف كث ًريا عن بعضها البعض‪ .‬وقد تتجاور‬

‫خطوطوخيوط‬ ‫يعرفالرسمالتوضيحيبأنهعمليةرسمتتمباستخداموسائطمختلفةلتصوير‬ ‫حالة معينة سواء أكانت توضيحاً ملواقف محددة أو وسيلة تعبريية لتوصيل‬ ‫األفكار أو مجرد شكل من أشكال اإلبداع الفني‪ .‬وقد استخدمت الرسوم‬ ‫التوضيحية خالل تاريخ تصميم األزياء لتجسيد رؤية املصمم حول شكل‬ ‫صيحات األزياء الجديدة‪ ،‬كام كانت وسيلة لتجربة مزج األلوان واختيار نوع‬ ‫القامش واإلكسسوارات ورؤيتها قبل متابعة عملية تصميم املالبس‪.‬‬

‫ال يقترص استخدام رسوم األزياء التوضيحية حالياً عىل تقديم نوع محدد أو‬ ‫ابتكار منط معني من املالبس‪ ،‬بل امتد استخدامها لتصبح شكالً من أشكال الفن‪.‬‬ ‫كام أن الرسوم التوضيحية‪ ،‬سواء أكانت ال تزال عىل الورق أو تم تحويلها إىل‬ ‫صورة رقمية‪ ،‬أصبحت تعكس رؤية الرسامني أنفسهم عوضاًعن تقييدها بفكرة‬ ‫املصممني فقط‪ ،‬حيث تعمل عىل توصيل األفكار إىل املتلقي باعتبارها نتيجة‬ ‫ألمر معني‪ ،‬وليست مجرد مرحلة من املراحل التي مير بها التصميم‪.‬‬

‫اعتاد الرسامون التوضيحيون يف البداية استخدام النامذج السائدة كالرسم‬ ‫التخطيطي (االسكيتش) والرسم التصويري والحفر عىل األلواح املعدنية التي‬ ‫كانت متاحة للجمهور عىل نطاق أوسع‪ .‬وتطورت تلك الرسومات بعد ذلك‬ ‫وإدخال تحسينات عليها لتقديم التصميم النهايئ وتحديد خط األزياء‪ .‬إال أنه‬ ‫مع ظهور التصوير الفوتوغرايف لألزياء‪ ،‬أصبحت الرسومات التوضيحية مجرد‬ ‫دراساتأولية‪،‬واستبدلالرسمالتوضيحيللتصميمبالتصويرالفوتوغرايف‪.‬‬

‫ويف دولة اإلمارات العربية املتحدة‪ ،‬اتبع العديد من الفنانني هذا التحول‪،‬‬ ‫واستخدموا هذه الرسومات كطريقة لحجب الصورة عن تصنيف ما يجب‬ ‫اعتباره فناً‪ ،‬وما يجب تصنيفه يف إطار تصميم األزياء‪ .‬واستطاع الفنانون تحويل‬ ‫إبداعاتهم الفنية إىل تصميامت وظيفية لألزياء تجمع بني األشكال التقليدية‬ ‫واالتجاه املعارص‪ .‬ويأيت تنظيم دائرة الثقافة والسياحة – أبوظبي معرض‬ ‫"خطوط وخيوط" نتيجة لدعوة مفتوحة وجهتها للفنانني والرسامني واملصممني‬ ‫عىل حد سواء‪ .‬يهدف هذا املعرض إىل تعريف الزوار عىل املرحلة االنتقالية التي‬ ‫مير بها الفنان قبل أن يصبح مصمم أزياء أو العكس‪ .‬كام يُعترب هذا املعرض‬ ‫مبثابة مساحة لعرض رسوم تصميم األزياء باعتبارها جزءا ً ال يتجزأ من الفن‬ ‫بالنسبة للمجتمع‪ ،‬وسجالً آخر ملصمم األزياء باعتباره فناناً‪ ،‬وللرسم التوضيحي‬ ‫باعتبارهعمالًفنياً‪.‬‬

‫أما فيام يتعلق باألزياء نفسها‪ ،‬فقد مرت مبراحل تطور بطيئة يف البداية‪ ،‬ثم‬ ‫تسارعت وترية تقدمها خالل القرن الخامس عرش حتى أصبح لها دور كبري‬ ‫يف التوضيح والرد عىل التغريات االجتامعية والسياسية واالقتصادية السائدة‬ ‫آنذاك‪ .‬وبفضل صيحات املوضة املوضحة يف الرسومات والصور الفوتوغرافية‪،‬‬ ‫متكن املؤرخون من تحديد تاريخ األعامل الفنية وعالقتها بفرتات زمنية محددة؛‬ ‫األمر الذي ساعد عىل تحويل الرسوم التوضيحية إىل وثائق تسجل اللحظات‬ ‫التاريخية‪.‬‬ ‫‪10‬‬

‫عرث شخصان يف أسرتاليا‪ ،‬عىل أقدم قنينة حاملة لرسالة يف‬ ‫العامل‪ ،‬وفكرا يف البداية أن يتخذاها مبثابة ديكور فقط‪،‬‬ ‫قبل أن يكتشفا قيمتها التاريخية‪.‬‬ ‫وبحسب ما نقلت صحيفة "غارديان" الربيطانية‪ ،‬فإن تونيا‬ ‫إيلامن‪ ،‬عرثت عىل القنينة التي يصل عمرها إىل ‪ 132‬عاما‪،‬‬ ‫عىل الرمال‪ ،‬يف جزيرة ويدج‪ ،‬غريب أسرتاليا‪ ،‬يف يناير املايض‬ ‫وقال كيم إيلامن‪ ،‬إن زوجته رجحت يف البداية أن تكون‬ ‫القنينة مجرد قاممة جرى إلقاؤها يف املكان‪ ،‬لكنها قررت‬ ‫يف نهاية املطاف أن تضعها يف مكتبة البيت‪.‬‬ ‫وعرث الزوجان عىل ورقة ملفوفة داخل القنينة‪ ،‬اكتشفا‬

‫أنها مكتوبة باللغة األملانية ويعود تاريخها إىل الثاين عرش من‬ ‫يونيو ‪ ،1886‬وأكد متحف أسرتاليا الغريب صحة الوثيقة‪.‬‬ ‫وجرى إلقاء القنينة يف البحر من عىل منت السفينة األملانية‬ ‫"باوال" سنة ‪ ،1886‬أثناء عبورها املحيط الهندي‪ ،‬وكان إلقاء‬ ‫القنينات أمرا مألوفا‪ ،‬وقتئذ‪ ،‬ألجل مساعدة حركة املالحة عىل‬ ‫تحديد تيارات املحيطات‪.‬‬ ‫وأصبحت القنينة التي اكتشفت صدفة األقدم يف العامل‪ ،‬حاليا‪،‬‬ ‫ذلك أن أقدم قنينة حتى وقت قريب مل يكن عمرها يتجاوز‬ ‫‪ 108‬سنوات‪.‬‬

‫بسبب تسجيل بؤر مرض إنفلونزا الطيور‬ ‫حظر استيراد الطيور الحية من جمهورية بلغاريا‬ ‫ديب‪ ،‬اإلمارات العربية املتحدة‪ 12 ،‬مارس ‪ 2018-‬استنادا للمتابعة الدورية التي تقوم بها ادارة التنمية‬ ‫والصحة الحيوانية لالطالع عىل آخر مستجدات الوضع الصحي للرشكاء التجاريني من خالل التقارير‬ ‫املنشورة لهذه الدول عىل موقع املنظمة العاملية للصحة الحيوانية فقد تبني تسجيل بؤرة جديدة مبرض‬ ‫انفلونزا الطيور يف جمهورية بلغاريا وعليه قررت وزارة التغري املناخي والبيئة التايل‪:‬‬ ‫‪1.1‬حظر استرياد كافة انواع الطيور الحية الداجنة والربية وطيور الزينة والصيصان وبيض التفقيس‬ ‫ومخلفاتها غري املعاملة حرارياً مؤقتاً من جمهورية بلغاريا‪.‬‬ ‫‪2.2‬حظر استرياد لحوم الدواجن ومنتجاتها غري املعاملة حرارياً وبيض املائدة مؤقتاً من املقاطعة املصابة‬ ‫(‪ )DOBRIC‬يف جمهورية بلغاريا‪.‬‬ ‫وقال سعادة الشيخ الدكتور ماجد بن سلطان القاسمي وكيل الوزارة املساعد لقطاع التنوع الغذايئ بالوكالة‬ ‫ومدير إدارة التنمية والصحة الحيوانية بالوزارة إن تلك اإلجراءات تأيت يف إطار حرص الوزارة عىل تحقيق‬ ‫أهدافها االسرتاتيجية املتمثلة برفع معدالت األمن الحيوي واستبعاد املسببات املرضية قبل دخولها للدولة‬ ‫للحيلولة دون دخول فريوس إنفلونزا الطيور ومنع مخاطرة وتأثرياته عىل صحة وسالمة الدواجن واملحافظة‬ ‫عليها وكذلك عىل الصحة العامة باعتباره من األمراض املشرتكة"‪.‬‬ ‫وتجدر االشارة إىل أن الوزارة تقوم بالتدقيق عىل الوثائق املرافقة لإلرساليات (شهادة املنشأ والشهادة‬ ‫الصحية وغريها من الشهادات املطلوبة من مثل شهادة الحالل) يف حال ورود شحنة منتجات غذائية‬ ‫للدولة‪ ،‬باإلضافة إىل إجراء الكشف الحيس ومطابقة البطاقة التعريفية عىل املنتجات مع املواصفة اإلماراتية‬ ‫القياسية‪ ،‬ومن ثم أخذ عينات من املنتجات الغذائية الخاصة بالشحنة وتحويلها للمخترب إلجراء الفحوصات‬ ‫املخربية الالزمة والتأكد من عدم احتوائها عىل أي مواد ُينع دخولها للدولة وتداولها بحسب القوانني‬ ‫واللوائح امل ُتبعة بهذا الخصوص‪.‬‬ ‫‪8‬‬
