irst off, please accept my apology for being absent in the last issue of The Source, but being a capitalist at heart, the only choice I had, when confronted with the submission of a last minute paid ad, was to accommodate the client and in this case, the only space available happened to be my bi-weekly rant.

I want to focus my attention on the Arabic side of our magazine and share with our English readers just how important the bilingual aspect is to an Al Ain publication. We are unique in what we do and owe a great deal of our success to an amazing woman that works diligently, issue after issue, bringing our Arabic audience a quality publication that we are very proud of. You have to appreciate just how helpless I feel when it comes to the Arabic content and indeed, although I have an Arabic name, I would not survive a second if my life depended on my written and verbal Arabic abilities! That’s where our amazing Diana Joudieh comes to the rescue, with an impeccable work ethic and a vocabulary that boasts, time after time, two of my favourite words; NO PROBLEM! I had the pleasure of accompanying Diana at a Dubai event the other night and as we drove, we discussed a multitude of subjects including the importance of trust. I know that despite my lack of competency with the Arabic language, I can always trust our Arabic editor, writer extraordinaire and amazing human being to represent us in the best way possible in every issue of The Source! The below little story best describes my profound respect and trust for Diana and as you read, keep in mind that I represent the passenger and Diana the competent pilot. A plane was flying through the clouds when it suddenly lost control. Everyone started shouting in fear but a single passenger kept reading his magazine. After an hour, the flight landed safely and someone asked the passenger how he could continue reading while everyone was so afraid? He answered “my friend and colleague is the pilot and I trusted and knew she would bring us down safely!

Al Ain: UAE leaders expressed condolences on the death of four UAE soldiers killed in the Arab Coalition’s Operation Restoring Hope in Yemen and visited the families of the martyrs. His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces conveyed his condolences to the grieving families through a tweet on his @MBZNews Twitter account. Shaikh Mohammad offered his “condolences to the family & relatives of martyr Ali Khamis Bin Ayid Al Ketbi at Al Dhaher area, Al Ain”. Shaikh Mohammad expressed his deepest sympathy to the family of the martyr during his visit to Al Ain yesterday. Shaikh Mohammad asserted that the martyrdom of the brave sons of the UAE only reinforced the UAE’s determination and resolve to defeat those plotting to target the region and its people. Three of the martyrs - Mohammad Khalfan Abdullah Saleem Al Siyabi from Abu Dhabi, Ali Khamis Saleem Bin Ayed Al Ketbi from Al Ain and Ahmad Khamis Al Hammadi from the Western Region - were laid to rest

on Thursday. They died on Tuesday when a hotel and other buildings in the southern Yemeni city of Aden were targeted in multiple terrorist attacks. His Highness Shaikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, offered condolences to the martyrs families while visiting mourning tents. In al Ain, Lieutenant General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, and Dr. Shaikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Adviser to the President of the UAE, said their thoughts were with the family of martyr Ali Khamis Bin Ayid Al Ketbi, who died in the line of duty in Yemen. Both leaders extended their deep condolences and sympathies during a visit to the family of the martyr in Al Ain. Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture, Youth, and Community Development, accompanied by Shaikh Shakhbout Bin Nahyan Al Nahyan and Shaikh Mubarak Bin Nahyan Al Nahyan offered their condolences to the family of martyr Ali Khamis Bin Ayid Al Ketbi in Al Ain. Al Wahda-Al Ain fixture ends in goalless draw Both sides were depleted with a number of players on international duty and though they had a number of chances, more so Al Wahda, the Group B fixture ended in a stalemate. Al Ain goalkeeper Mahmoud Al Mas, standing in for Khalid Eisa, was the star of the night, pulling off a flurry of saves. Al Wahda and Al Ain played out a goalless draw in the Arabian Gulf Cup at the Al Nahyan Stadium on Friday night. This was Al Wahda's third draw and they are at three points, while Al Ain have two points from three games. Al Wahda began well and were awarded a freekick before the clock hit 10 minutes but former Arsenal midfielder Denilson's curling effort sailed over the cross bar. They had another opportunity at 24 minutes when Sebastian Tagliabue came close but Al Ain defender Salem Al Azizi did well to deny the Argentine. Al Ain had a freekick just before the half-hour mark after Ryan Babel was brought down on the edge of the box. But Fellipe Bastos, couldn't make it count. Al Wahda then had a flurry of chances later on and in the 40th minute, the impressive youngster Amer Omar saw his attempt deflected for a corner.

Sultan Al Ghafri was spot on with the corner but his effort was pushed away by goalkeeper Mahmoud Al Mas. Amer Omar, who was lurking around, pounced on it and shot but his attempt from close range was saved. Al Ain had a chance later but captain Ibrahim Diaky's attempt was palmed away by goalkeeper Ali Al Hosani. Al Ain had a chance again two minutes after the break but Ali Al Hosani denied Bastos. Al Wahda had the best opportunity at 55 minutes as they went on the counter through substitute Khalid Bawazir. He fed Amer Omar, who set it up well for Tagliabue. But the Argentine's strike was well saved by Mahmoud Al Mas. Bawazir then missed one later on as his effort brushed the cross bar and went over. Mahmoud Al Mas then thwarted Sultan Saif's long ranger. Source: Khaleej Times

Waste-side story of bustling Dubai Creek Dubai: The stream of rubbish along Dubai Creek has become an eyesore yet again due to persistent litterbugs, despite the civic body’s efforts in beefing up its management of waste. According to residents, the unsightly litter pops up regularly on Friday and Saturday nights near the abra stations after scores of people visit the area on the weekend. However, commuters on their way to work the next day have no other choice but to see the scenic view littered with plastic bags, soda cans and empty water bottles strewn across the embankment. “It has become a common occurrence to see lines of litter near the abra station every morning on my way to work, and it is ruining the view that we would otherwise have had. It would help a lot if more rubbish bins were placed along the street, and I think that would help people stop tossing their litter on the floor,” said Satyam Chibber, a resident for 12 years. “This is not new, and this problem has been around for years. Maybe more awareness campaigns should be done, to educate people and stop their habits, because it’s a shame that such a popular location is always dirty,” said another resident, who declined to be named. Abdul Majeed Saifaie, director of waste management department at Dubai Municipality, explained that an ongoing 10

awareness campaign to tackle littering, particularly along the Creek and other popular sites such as Al Karama, has been running throughout the year. To put an end to such unhygienic habits, including spitting, municipal inspectors may slap a Dh500 on offenders. The litter is not limited to the Creek’s embankment, as the municipality has also beefed up its measures on removing rubbish from the water. “The rubbish thrown on the pavements ends up being blown into the Creek and spreads

further, and we are constantly carrying out awareness campaigns so that people will stop this dreadful habit, which continues to persist,” said Saifaie. “We carry out routine cleaning on a daily basis, which consists of two shifts, and have also recently raised the number of skimmers from four to eight to clean the rubbish from the water. We have skimmers of different sizes to tackle the different sizes of rubbish, as they are not limited to plastic bags and rubbish, and we have to constantly educate people on this issue.” Source: Gulf News

Geir Lundestad was Director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute from 1990 to 2014. Now he has a book to spruik, and he’s been doing the rounds of the media, serving up the publishing business’s equivalent of supermarket tastings. For me, it’s been a bit like shopping at Costco, which - American readers will be happily aware - is the canny route to a free lunch.

I

n 1994 the Nobel Peace Prize went to Yasser Arafat, Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin. The situation could easily have deteriorated into farce, but, fortunately, the three men got along. The team on the award committee didn’t gel nearly so well, with one member taking his bat and ball and storming off in protest.

On the evening of the award banquet, Lundestad trooped over to the Arafats’ suite to escort the couple to the do. They weren’t quite ready, and Yasser’s wife, Suha, asked Geir to wait a few minutes as he’d caught them smack bang in the midst of their favorite activity. So Geir went into the living room to bide his time, only to find Yasser chilling on the couch, watching an episode of Tom and Jerry, his favorite cartoon. “It was made very clear that they intended to watch until the end,” Lundestad says. And so, just as Tom met the sharp edge of Jerry’s ingenuity, no doubt much to Yasser and Suha’s delight, we meet the theme of this article. People do the most surprising things. I was certainly surprised to learn that Bryony Worthington, professional climate and energy analyst, formerly of Friends of the Earth and current UK shadow energy minister, supports the development of a fracking industry. “We have to be realistic. We are going to be using gas for a long time because of the huge role it plays for heating homes and for industry,” she says. To be sure, she insists development should go ahead only if emissions are captured and stored. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is the system

12

of bagging-up carbon and forcing it into rocks underground. It’s the environmental equivalent of sweeping the dirt under the carpet, allowing the captains of carbon to go on trashing the house until they’ve wrung every last dollar from fossil fuels. The way people talk about CCS, you’d think it a. works, b. is economically viable and c. cheaper than renewables, each of which d. ain’t true. Friends of the Earth’s director, Craig Bennett, says, “Betting everything on carbon capture and storage is highly risky… It’s increasingly looking like a pipe dream.” I’m sure he’s right - but why should we believe him? Friends of the Earth have a serious credibility problem thanks to Bryony Worthington. Here’s a prominent environmentalist advocating massive public investment in a high-carbon future when the science is clear that most of the world’s fossil fuels must remain unburned if we are to avoid catastrophic climate change. If anyone should be aware of the facts, it is the Baroness. Is it coincidence that this is happening just as the UK government is cutting investment in renewable projects? I don’t know, but I suspect that the serious coal and gas dollars invested of late in lobbying US governments are being matched across the pond. Perhaps the captains of carbon are playing the shadow minister for a fool, working the levers of power, discrediting the environmental movement in the process and laughing all the way to the Bahamas. Is that paranoid? Maybe. But if Yasser Arafat would rather watch Tom and Jerry than attend the Nobel Prize banquet, I’d say pretty much anything is possible.

Children Are 800% Worse When Their Mothers Are In The Room I don’t know about the situation in your homes but in our castle, there has always been that mama papa rivalry surrounding the offspring’s behavioural tendencies in relation to the parental role model’s gender. More often than not I would tell my wife, much to her dismay, that she is welcome at anytime to join us during our frequent “daddy time” outings to witness and above all, learn the secrets of “Child whispering”. As you can well imagine she failed to acknowledge my victories and as such, it is with joy and delight that I share the following study with my wife and the many other mothers struggling to tame their little bundles of joy – it’s apparently not your fault and you are definitely not alone!

A

study out of the University Of Washington Department Of Psychology has revealed that children are 800% worse when their mothers are in the room. If the children are under ten, the percentage doubles to 1,600%.

The study followed 500 families and measured Neediness, Whine Crying, Shriek Screaming, Attempted Slapping, Forgetting How to Walk/Use Words, and Acting the Fool. Professor of Marriage and Family Psychology, Dr. K.P Leibowitz gave us insight into the study. “What we found was that children as young as eight months-old could be playing happily but upon seeing their mother enter a room was 99.9% more likely to begin crying, release their bowels, and need her immediate attention. The .1% was a vision-impaired child but once he heard his mother’s voice he began throwing things and asked for a snack despite having just eaten - truly fascinating!” Paul Olsen, a father of three and study participant, was shocked by the study’s outcome. “I always wondered why she couldn’t get anything done. She’s literally their kryptonite and magnet at the same time. They’re pretty good for me, though.” The research found that despite using the same disciplinary methods, 100% of the children were more responsive to instructions spoken at a normal voice level if they came from someone other than their mother. To receive similar behavioral results, the mothers in the group had to raise their voices to that of someone being attacked by several large animals. “I didn’t need a study to tell me this,” said study participant and mother of four Lisa Powell in a sit-down home interview.

“My kids act half their age the second they catch my scent. It’s why I’m now a high functioning alcoholic,” she joked while pinning sensory tables and first day of school picture ideas. Dr. Leibowitz is working on a spray that masks a mother’s natural pheromones to offer some relief but in the meantime recommends families invest in a bathroom with a working lock.

stuff for men

MEN

& BREAST CANCER

I

Breast cancer in men is a rare disease. Less than 1% of all breast cancers occur in men. In 2015, about 2,350 men are expected to be diagnosed with the disease. For men, the lifetime risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000. n keeping with this month’s breast cancer awareness campaign, The Source researched some of the male breast cancer survivor stories and is sharing one of the many we found while browsing the Male Breast Cancer Coalition site. This is Cecil Herrin’s story; one of the many that needs to be told to inspire the necessary awareness for men in regards to a menace that selects its victims at random, regardless of race, age or gender. Imagine celebrating a birthday on January 1st, being diagnosed with male breast cancer on January 3rd and having your breast removed on January 17th. I don’t have to imagine, because it happened to me in 2012.

Initially, my doctor told me the lump next to my right breast was nothing to worry about. If you have a lump and your doctor tells you not to worry, that’s when you worry. That’s also when you go see another doctor. We men go to the same doctors for years and we take for granted they know everything. They don’t. After surviving two heart attacks, I knew something was wrong with my body. You know your body better than anyone. My persistence led to a breast cancer diagnosis. It was Stage 1. I had a mastectomy, but thankfully didn’t need chemo or radiation. I’m on tamoxifen now and the doctors have told me there’s a 15% chance my breast cancer could come back. The doctors hardly ever, ever check us men from the waste up. Now my doctors are checking up under my arms, back and chest. I want other men to learn from my experience and I’ve made it my mission to raise male breast cancer awareness. Too many men feel alone, but I feel like I am making some progress with my efforts. Patients are starting to become aware. We need to let it be known that men can have breast cancer just like women. All the images out there about breast cancer shouldn’t just be of women. Have a man standing side by side with a woman in the pictures. We need the exposure. We need to grab hold of those skirt tails. Breast cancer in men has been a disease known for years, but nobody’s ever talked about it. I’m very passionate about getting the word out there and I won’t let anyone discourage me. I’ve walked in fashion shows and speak often about the importance of early detection and breast self examinations. Last month I organized a charity basketball game that was so successful, it will now be an annual fundraiser. The governor of Georgia is about to sign a bill I proposed declaring June to be Men’s Breast/Prostate Awareness month. My destiny wasn’t for me to make millions; it’s for me to save millions. I hope my legacy will be that I have saved millions of men’s lives.

cover story The chance of a woman developing breast cancer up to the age of 85 is 1 in 8. It is a major public health concern with incidences of the disease steadily increasing every year. Therefore, performing regular breast self-exams and knowing the risks can help in reducing the number of breast cancer cases.

D

r. Ebtehaj Alanizi , Specialist Obstetrics and Gynecology at Abu Dhabi’s healthcare institution Burjeel Hospital, said, “When breast cancer is detected early, women have a much greater chance of being treated successfully and, for most women, the cancer will not return after treatment.” Dr. Alanizi believes that women of all ages should become familiar with the normal look and feel of their breasts and be proactive about their health by performing regular self-breast examinations and scheduling regular mammograms, depending on age and health condition. “Self-breast exams allow a woman to notice any changes in texture, thickness or the presence of a lump,” said Dr. Alanizi. “These exams help report any observed changes to the doctor. But it is important to note that self-breast checks are not designed for you to diagnose anything. They are prescribed to help you know what is normal for you. “When you begin to recognize what is normal, you will detect changes easily.” These exams should be done by all women over the age of 20 and carried out monthly, five days after the menstrual cycle. For those who have reached menopause, do the exams on the same day every month. Breast exams can be done in front of the mirror, in the shower, or even lying down – just make sure you are in a comfortable position. Breast tissue feels slightly firm, while the inner and lower parts of the breast feel soft. If you feel squishy or soft lumps, these are more likely to be cysts or a fibro adenoma. Cancerous lumps are irregularly shaped with a gritty surface like a golf ball. Malignant tumours will also be difficult to move.

“The biggest risk factor for

developing breast cancer is age. Therefore, women over the age of 40 should go for at least one mammogram every two years. Moreover, women who have a family history or who are considered high-risk may be asked by their doctor to get themselves checked more regularly,” Dr. Alanizi

Dr. Alanizi outlines five steps to follow for selfexamination: •

Step 1: Stand in front of a mirror, shoulders straight and arms on your hips. Look out for changes in breast shape, size and colour, visible distortion, swelling, dimpled skin, bulges in the skin, a change in the nipple position, redness, soreness or rashes.

Step 2: Raise your arms over your head and look out for the same changes mentioned above.

Step 3: Gently squeeze your nipple with your index finger and thumb to check for discharges like milky or yellow fluid or blood.

Step 4: Lie down on a flat surface and holding out your fingers flat and together, use your right hand to feel your left breast and vice versa. Cover the entire breast to check for lumps.

Step 5: Feel your breasts while you are standing or sitting – cover your whole breast with your hand and check for lumps sideways and vertically.

If you feel a lump, schedule an appointment with your doctor, who might suggest an ultrasound or mammogram. “Although self-breast exams are important, they should not take the place of routine clinical breast exams and mammograms by your doctor, “Dr. Alanizi warned. “The biggest risk factor for developing breast cancer is age. Therefore, women over the age of 40 should go for at least one mammogram every two years. Moreover, women who have a family history or who are considered high-risk may be asked by their doctor to get themselves checked more regularly,” Dr. Alanizi advises. There are a number of things a woman can do to reduce their risk of developing cancer such as quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy body weight, being physically active on most, preferably all days, eating plenty of fruit, vegetables, poultry, fish, and low-fat dairy products and limiting alcohol intake.

10 FOODS BREAST CANCER THAT FIGHT

Mounting research shows that healthy eating habits can put a significant dent in new cases of breast cancer each year. Here are ten of the most powerful breast cancer–fighting foods: MUSHROOMS A study published in Nutrition and Cancer in 2010 found that higher mushroom intake is associated with a lower risk of breast cancer among women who are premenopausal. Cremini, oyster and shiitake mushrooms, among others, contain antioxidants such as L-ergothioneine that may confer cancer protection. BROCCOLI SPROUTS These peppery sprouts are high in sulforaphane, an antioxidant that University of Michigan scientists found may target and destroy cells that fuel tumour growth. POMEGRANATES The crunchy seeds of a pomegranate (also referred to as arils) are well endowed with ellagic acid, a potent antioxidant that may inhibit an enzyme that plays a role in breast cancer development, according to U.S. scientists from the City of Hope’s Beckman Research Institute. Pomegranates, a rich source of antioxidants, have also been linked to improved heart health. LENTILS A study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2009 analyzed the dietary patterns of more than 3,500 Asian-American women and found that a higher intake of legumes, which include lentils and beans, was associated with lower breast cancer risk. Though often overlooked, budget-friendly lentils are brimming with folate, fibre and a host of other nutrients that may help keep breast cancer at bay. WALNUTS Preliminary data suggests that snacking on up to two ounces (60 g) of walnuts a day could halt the development of breast cancer tumours. Researchers from West Virginia’s Marshall University School of Medicine surmise that walnuts’ omega-3s, antioxidants and phytosterols may help slow the growth of cancerous cells. BLUEBERRIES Research suggests that pterostilbene, a phytonutrient in blueberries, can halt the growth of breast cancer tumours by causing cancerous cells to self-destruct, a process called apoptosis. SPINACH Premenopausal women with the highest average intakes of dietary folate (a good source is spinach) had a 40 percent lower risk of breast cancer, according to a study in the American Journal of Epidemiology in 2011. The B vitamin is necessary for proper cell division, and stymies changes to DNA that may lead to breast cancer. EGGS Choline, an essential nutrient abundant in eggs, is associated with a 24 percent reduced risk of breast cancer, according to a U.S. study involving more than 3,000 women. This essential nutrient, found in the yolk, is necessary to ensure proper cell functioning. SALMON Salmon is one of the few foods to contain vitamin D in significant amounts. Researchers at Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital determined that increased intakes of the “sunshine vitamin” were associated with a 24 percent reduction in the risk of developing breast cancer. Vitamin D may prevent cells from becoming cancerous. RYE BREAD After reviewing the published research, Finnish scientists determined that consuming wholegrain rye can help slash breast cancer risk. A synergy between fibre, lignans, vitamins, minerals and the phytonutrient phytic acid make rye bread a breast cancer fighter.

16 October 2015 is World Food Day. The day is about recognising the worldwide problem of hunger. And this year, the theme for the day is “Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition. The theme has been chosen to highlight and raise awareness for the problems worldwide and the solutions to food security and ridding the world of hunger. The day is also about raising awareness and calling for changes to our agriculture and food supply systems.

H

owever, it is not just about donating food to the world's hungry and undernourished peoples. It is about doing something to help them help themselves. If I were hungry and someone gave me a plough to farm my land, I would be far more grateful than if they gave me a sack of potatoes. If I had a plough I could be self-sufficient and produce my own food. That is what the day is trying to encourage. The Food and Agriculture Organisation is a division of the United Nations, and is responsible for World Food Day. Along with raising awareness of hunger and poverty, the day aims to encourage economic and technological cooperation between different governments and non-governmental organisations. With an estimated 1.02 billion malnourished people across the globe, it is a pretty serious matter and worth the public and private investment that is being sought out. So that's why it is important to raise awareness via World Food Day.

making a difference Have you heard of stomach binding? Ziporra Mbungo is well acquainted with it. She ties a rope tight around her stomach so that she can stave off hunger pangs – food is scarce and she gives what little food she does have to her grandchildren. What’s even worse is that often when a person using this method does receive food, they’ll remove the rope too quickly and die. What kind of world are we living in when a human being needs to do this? I’m willing to bet this method is in common use right now in Somalia. After one of the worst droughts experienced in more than fifty years, the current famine has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people and more are dying. There are a number of factors that decide whether famine will be declared. Some of these factors include whether 20% of the population is living on less than 2,100 calories, the presence of civil war and when people have access to less than four litres of water per day. They need aid right now and that means sending food and water. World Food Day may have arrived but the war on hunger should be fought all year round! WORLD FOOD DAY AT EXPO MILANO 2015 The official celebration of World Food Day this year at Expo Milano 2015 is promising to be one of the World Exposition’s biggest events. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Director-General of FAO will be joined by the President of the Republic of Italy and the Italian Ministers for Agriculture and Foreign Affairs for the opening ceremony. Falling in an opportune moment, just after the Summit in September 2015 and before the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COPI), World Food Day will be a unique opportunity to send a strong message to young people – the Zero Hunger Generation – on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and to engage them in the challenge of sustainably eradicating hunger and poverty over the next 15 years. The official ceremony will commemorate FAO’s 70th Anniversary and address the theme for World Food Day 2015, “Social Protection and Agriculture: Breaking the Cycle of Rural Poverty”, and how this links with the UN theme for Expo 2015, “The Zero Hunger Challenge · United for a sustainable world”. Representatives of FAO member countries, Expo country commissioners, representatives of the Italian Government and other partners have been invited to this high-level event. Highlights of the ceremony will include the official presentation of the Milan Charter to the UN Secretary-General, a manifesto that engages all citizens in the fight against undernourishment, malnutrition and waste, while promoting equal access to natural resources and sustainability. FOOD WASTE IN THE UAE 5 SIMPLE TIPS TO STOP THE WASTE

I

Food waste is a growing problem in the UAE. So World Food Day (16th October) provides the perfect opportunity to start reducing the amount of food we throw away. Helpling (helpling.ae), the leading onlineplatform for home cleaners brings you some tips on reducing food wastage in the home. n the UAE we love food, but for a nation of food lovers, the amount we waste each year is quite staggering at 3,270,000 tonnes (or 350kg each). It is the equivalent of each one of us throwing five bowls of rice in the bin, every day.

AED 13 billion worth of food is wasted; the same as AED 1400 per person. It’s also very harmful to the environment. The carbon footprint of wasted food in the UAE is equivalent to that of around 1,000,000 cars - over a third of the number of cars in the entire country.

In Abu Dhabi, food makes up 39% of all waste, which adds up to some 400,000 tonnes. And things only get worse during Ramadan - in Dubai, 38% of food is wasted, but this rises to a whopping 55%.

The National Environment Agency has estimated that approximately half of all wasted food is produced by households, which fortunately means that we can all do our own small part to make a difference. Here is a list of some useful tips to cut down food waste in the home, which will save money in the long run.

Food waste is costing us a lot of money. Each year,

5 WAYS YOU CAN REDUCE FOOD WASTE AT HOME:

1

Shop smart

Buy less food. Seems simple, but really, this is one of the most important things you can do. More often than not, some of the food we buy in the supermarket will spoil before it’s eaten and get thrown away. Even if it’s only a small amount each time, it all adds up. Buy a little less food each time you visit the supermarket, even if this means making more trips. Making a meal plan for the week can help. Then write a shopping list containing only the items you know you will use for those meals. And the number one classic piece of advice: never go grocery shopping when you’re hungry!

4

2

Work with what you’ve got

Regularly check use-by dates and make meals using items that are reaching their expiry date. This will help reduce the amount of food you throw out, and the different combinations of ingredients can make for some exciting meals. Check out a site like foodgawker for some inspiration. And remember, if stored correctly, some foods can be safe for a few days after their expiry date.

3

Staple foods like bread often make up a big portion of wasted food. But bread is such a versatile food: it can be used in soups, cakes, crumbles, meatballs and, of course, bread crumbs for coating meat. It’s also one of the best foods to freeze. You can take one slice out at a time and defrost it in the toaster or oven. Think twice before throwing bread out. When you make a big meal, save any excess food; it can be your lunch for the following day or simply a snack for when you get peckish. You can also freeze most food in individual portions in freezer bags.

Serve sensible portions

Avoid over-serving food when cooking for friends and family by serving smaller portions at first, then dishing out any more to those who are still hungry. You might also try serving food on smaller plates the same amount of food on a smaller plate seems like more food, as it seems to be taking up more space on the plate.

Store food properly

Proper storage of certain foods can drastically impact their longevity. You should have a cool and dry cupboard or storage area for any dry, long-life products. Sealable plastic containers, jars with lids, and resealable bags are all ideal for these foods. Choose a container that has adequate space for your produce without allowing too much air inside. Keep your fridge clean and hygienic, and at the right temperature (ideally around 4 degrees Celsius) and your food will stay fresh for longer. Get into the habit of rotating your foods in the fridge each time you shop. Bring items from the back towards the front, this prevents anything from being left at the back and spreading bacteria if it goes off.

5

Reuse, recycle

Many items that you might just toss in the trash once you’ve used them still have life left in them. Take coffee grounds, for example - there are plenty of inventive ways you can use them before they go in the trash. You can also use old lemons to disinfect surfaces, or even clean the inside of your fridge. You could try composting. It’s nature’s way of recycling food waste. Much of what you would have otherwise put in the trash can go on a compost heap.

13 Affordable Countries That Are Perfect For Budget Travelers

34

The Source

my world Your dollar will get you pretty far in these 13 countries - which means they are pretty much the best places to go when you’re watching your wallet.

1. INDONESIA Eat Pray Love is just the tip of the iceberg: There is so much more to this beautiful country, including the fact that it is majorly budget-friendly. A full dinner costs about 13,500 Indonesian rupiah, or $1! 2. CAMBODIA Cambodia is a staple go-to for budget travelers. You can see the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat (above), go diving on the cheap, and hit up any of the country’s beautiful, sparkly pristine beaches - and it’s all so affordable. A restaurant meal is rarely over $5, and beer starts at - wait for it - just 25 cents! 3. VIETNAM In a sentence, Vietnam is just stunning. You can get your favorite Vietnamese dish, which you WILL learn to pronounce correctly, for about $1, or 22,000 Vietnamese dong. 4. LAOS Laos is a Southeast Asian country known very much for its beautiful mountains, Buddhist monasteries, and “tubing parties,” where you basically float down a river and stop at tons of bars and “happy” restaurants along the way. So, of course, be responsible! You can get a room for about $10 to $30 a night (depending on how fancy you go), and you can get street food (like plates of sticky rice) for about $1.

cheap meal costs around 150 Nepalese rupees (about $1), and a more expensive, three-course dining affair costs about $8. 8. CHINA The cool part about China is that it’s a huge country, yes, but it’s also pretty easy to get from one place to another, so it isn’t ever too overwhelming in that way. And, on top of that, the transit itself is especially cheap - taxis start at around $1. 9. BULGARIA (or, really, anywhere in Eastern Europe) You may think that Europe is generally more expensive than, say, Southeast Asia and Central America. And, generally speaking, you’d be right - except that Eastern Europe is actually much cheaper than its western cousins. In Bulgaria, for example, you can get an entire liter of beer (32 ounces) for $1.50. 10. NICARAGUA Many people say Nicaragua is the new Costa Rica, which basically means that it’s getting to be an increasingly popular Central American destination. So get there while it’s still on the rise! Bonus: You won’t have to pay much once you arrive. The country is known for all of its highadventure outdoor activities, particularly surfing - so do it up on the cheap. And you can get a dorm bed for as little as $5.

5. THAILAND Even though Thailand has gotten pretty touristy and it’s not AS cheap as the other Southeast Asian countries, it’s still a super affordable place to max out your dollars. We should probably mention: Rooms (known as guesthouses) in the countryside will set you back, oh, you know, only about $4 (135 Thai bhat).

11. GUATEMALA This country is known for its gorgeous outdoor landscapes, as well as its cool arts-and-crafts handiwork. You can find tons of cool wooden sculptures and knickknacks in the weekend markets. It’s all affordable, too: A good meal, for instance, is roughly $3, and everything else is similarly budget-friendly.

6. INDIA It’s a beautiful, majestic country. And, if you know how to navigate your way around, you will be able to stretch your dollar to the max. A plate of hot dhal and rice, for example, can cost around 40 Indian rupees - that’s about 60 cents! And you can also get on a train and travel around for a few days at a time for just a couple bucks.

12. HONDURAS Most people think of Costa Rica and even Nicaragua when they think of Central America. But Honduras is quickly becoming one of the rising hot spots for budget travelers looking to backpack on their own path. Fortunately, it’s very affordable. Our favorite: A good local meal costs about 65 Honduran lempira which is $3 - sold!

7. NEPAL Yes, there was a big earthquake in Nepal back in April 2015. But the country is still very much open to tourism - in fact, much of their economy depends on tourism, so they would be very happy to have you. (Wait until September to go, though - it’s monsoon season until then. Nepal is practically heaven for budget travelers, too. A

13. PERU Whatever you do, please, please put Machu Picchu on your travel bucket list. It is one of the coolest and most magical structures in the world. And the other parts of Peru are equally stunning - not to mention affordable. A taxi all around Lima, for instance, is about $7 (25 Peruvian nuevo).
