usually have a great deal to ramble on about in my bi-weekly note – except for that one issue when I wrote 350 words of nothing at all! As for this extremely special edition of The Source, there is one and only one thing that I would like to emphasize above all else and that is THANK YOU! We are officially 100 issues old and in celebration of this century mark, have tried our best to keep a common theme of 100 alive throughout most of the magazine. It has been what I like to refer to as “a four year over-night success story”, chocked full of every heartbreaking and congratulatory event imaginable, leading up to this milestone achievement. I have been blessed with the remarkable opportunity of reaching out to the people of Al Ain and been rewarded with so many wonderful relationships during my tenure with The Source. In many ways, it feels like I have just begun the journey.

I wish to thank our dedicated team, the many advertisers and sponsors who have given their support over the years – without you none of this would have ever been possible – and naturally, the many readers who have made us a welcome part of their lives on a fortnightly basis. A very special thank you is extended to the owner of The Source, who we like to refer to as “Abu Source”. It has not always been an easy journey and through good times and bad, he has lived up to his name, loved us unconditionally as only a father could, believed in us and supported our needs in the best way possible since our inception. We thank you all 100 times and many more for making us Al Ain’s favourite community magazine and we look forward to the next 100 issues of The Source!

They took him to the hospital, but doctors couldn’t find anything. For decades, he’s suffered from sniffles and headaches he thought were a result of allergies. Now, more than four decades later, it turns out his childhood doctors were wrong, the Guardian reports. In what must have been a powerful sneeze-accompanied by what he calls “a very uncomfortable sensation”the suction cup emerged from a 51-yearold’s nose.

“I started a sneezing fit and it came out of my left nostril,” the British man says. “I thought, ‘What’s this? Where the hell has this come from?’ and pulled out this rubber sucker.” Easton called his mom, who told him about the hospital visit—which he had apparently forgotten. “I knew it wasn’t [a mistake] and it’s always worried me, and now it has suddenly shot out. We are all shocked.” Easton’s current doctor doesn’t think the dart caused any problems. Easton even carried it around for a while before he threw it away, the BBC reports. As for his nose, “it doesn’t feel any different” now, he notes.

uman beings are currently causing the greatest mass extinction of species since the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. If present trends continue one half of all species of life on earth will be extinct in less than 100 years, as a result of habitat destruction, pollution, invasive species, and climate change.

ozone layer, according to the survey of 400 scientists commissioned by New York’s American Museum of Natural History. The poll’s release comes on the heels of a groundbreaking study of plant diversity concluding that at least one in eight known plant species is threatened with extinction. Although scientists are divided over the specific numbers, many believe that the rate of loss is greater now than at any time in history.

A vast majority of biologists are convinced that a “mass extinction” of plants and animals is underway that poses a major threat to humans in the next century, yet, the masses are only dimly aware of the problem, a poll says.

“The speed at which species are being lost is much faster than any we’ve seen in the past -- including those [extinctions] related to meteor collisions,” said Daniel Simberloff, a University of Tennessee ecologist and prominent expert in biological diversity who participated in the museum’s survey. [Note: the last mass extinction caused by a meteor collision was that of the dinosaurs, 65 million years ago.]

The rapid disappearance of species was ranked as one of the planet’s gravest environmental worries, surpassing pollution, global warming and the thinning of the

that up to one-fifth of all living species could disappear within 30 years. Nearly all attributed the losses to human activity, especially the destruction of plant and animal habitats. Among the dissenters, some argue that there is not yet enough data to support the view that a mass extinction is occurring. Many of the estimates of species loss are extrapolations based on the global destruction of rain forests and other rich habitats. Among non-scientists, meanwhile, the subject appears to have made relatively little impression. Sixty percent of the laymen polled professed little or no familiarity with the concept of biological diversity, and barely half ranked species loss as a “major threat.” The scientists interviewed in the Louis Harris poll were members of the Washingtonbased American Institute of Biological Sciences, a professional society of more than 5,000 scientists.

Sheikha In the Top 100! SHEIKHA LUBNA RANKED 42nd AMONG THE 100 MOST POWERFUL WOMEN IN THE WORLD BY FORBES MAGAZINE

I

have been a huge fan of this incredible woman since first reading about her achievements. It comes as no surprise to hear that the Minister of International Cooperation and Development of the UAE, Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, has been ranked 42nd among the 100 most powerful women in the world by Forbes Magazine and better still, she has managed to capture first place among the most powerful women in the Arab countries in 2015. She ranked 55th in 2014 and 67th in the year 2013 - congratulations Sheikha Lubna!

The magazine writes that as Minister of International Cooperation and Development, Sheikha Lubna has led the United Arab Emirates into an unprecedented amount of philanthropy. The oil-rich country contributed $5.4 billion to foreign nations in 2013, a steep climb from the US$1.6 billion donated in 2012, giving more than any other nation at a rate of 1.3 percent of the country’s income. Sheikha Lubna has also contributed to charities in her own time, volunteering with Friends of Cancer Patients Society and serving on the Board of Directors for the Dubai Autism Center. In 2004, she became the first woman in the country’s history to assume a cabinet position when she was appointed as Minister of Foreign Trade. Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi is the UAE’s first female minister. Prior to her current ministerial role, she served as Minister of Foreign Trade. The Emirati national’s background lies in IT; she won plaudits for developing a system that slashed cargo turnaround times at Dubai airport, and in 2000 founded Tejari, the Middle East’s first business-to-business online marketplace. The firm, which is now one of Dubai World’s most successful units, has franchises across the Middle East and was initially funded by HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai, and prime minister of the UAE. Sheikha Lubna was appointed to her first ministerial post in November of 2004 - becoming Minister of Economy and Planning, before taking over the office of Minister of Foreign Trade briefly afterwards. She also sits on the board of directors at the Dubai Chamber. Her smile, energy and brilliant accomplishments are a huge inspiration for both the men and women shooting for the stars in this country. The UAE is a mere 43 years old and to have accolades such as this bestowed on citizens of such a young nation is truly something to be very proud of indeed! Here at The Source, we will keep working hard at what we do and you never know, perhaps one day we will be fortunate enough to have this amazing woman grace the cover of one of our humble issues. 14

SHOOTS FOR 100 CHILDREN IN 2015!

W

ell gentlemen, I can only say that the mere thought of fathering 100 children is completely inconceivable, not to mention both emotionally and physically draining – no puns intended there! And then there are men like Mohammed Daad Murad Al Balushi, better known as Abu Faisal or ‘Bid Daad’. As of May 2013, this Emirate man registered 93 children from a host of multinational wives and was at that time scheduled to remarry and continue his push for 100 kids by the end of 2015. His wives and ex-wives are Bedouin women from the UAE but also women from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iran and Oman. The Islamic Shariah law (and that of the UAE) permits only four wives at a time but to keep in line with his faith he has happily embraced serial divorce and remarriage, with 18 or more wives and exes in his amassed collection. And just to show that he’s a nice guy, each divorced wife is cared for financially and has her own family home. His mass production of children began when he was only 24 and now, at the age of 68, this one legged man may have reached his century target. I say may have, as we

were unable to reach Daad for an exclusive interview but are keeping our fingers crossed in hopes that he has reached his desired goal. He can then spend his retirement from baby making focusing on being a father or better still, committing the names of his offspring to memory! We struggle to pay the cost of living and fund the education for one or two kids (when it comes to the third, we already have an odd case) and look what a 60 year old daddy with only one leg was able to do. How does he manage to keep multiple households and feed so many mouths? Daad has become somewhat of a folk hero here in the UAE and receives government support for housing and cash, plus a very generous military pension. “Even though my family is big, I don’t have any problem managing the budget. I take care of their requirements - and pay pocket money to each and every child,” said Daad. “If I buy fish for the entire family, I have to spend a minimum of AED 500 ($ 136) per day. If the menu includes mutton, at least AED 1,000 ($ 272) per day is required, and that’s just for the meat.” There is an Arabic proverb that my father once recited while having a discussion revolving around the hardships that many people face in their struggle to keep food on the table. It is believed that children are gifts from God and each child a parent is blessed with, will come with its own bread. Daad has certainly received his fair share of blessings and we can’t wait to tally up the grandchildren!

RAMADAN FOR NON-MUSLIMS

D

o non-Muslims have to fast? No. While Muslims don’t expect non-Muslims to fast as well, it remains important to show respect. As such there are certain things to know. Read below:

What do you need to know? Most of the following points apply to the rest of the year too, but are even more important to adhere to during Ramadan.

Do not eat, drink, or smoke in public during the fasting hours. This includes chewing gum.

Do not engage in public displays of affection, like hugging.

Do not engage in any aggressive behaviour.

Do not dance or play music in public. You may listen to music quietly with headphones.

Do not wear inappropriate clothing in public. Dress respectfully. Men should avoid wearing sleeveless vests, while women should cover their shoulders and knees.

18

The Source

Do not swear. Blasphemy is considered extra offensive during Ramadan.

Do not refuse a gift, from a simple date to something more exotic, you should accept it. Further, you should not refuse an invitation to join someone at Iftar.

The penalty for not following the above etiquette can vary, with community service normally being favoured. Where can you eat, drink, or smoke? If you are not fasting, then you are free to eat and drink in the privacy of your own home, as well as in designated areas. Ask your employer where you can eat your lunch. The same goes with smoking. Some restaurants and cafes will be open during the day. You are free to frequent these. Food can be taken away and consumed in private. Other things you need to know: Work hours: The standard work-day is reduced by two hours for all employees across all sectors, regardless of whether you are observing Ramadan or not. Grocery shopping: Supermarkets and groceries are open as usual, and you are free to do your weekly shop as normal. Driving: There’s no denying the fact that

driving during the day, particularly between 5pm and Iftar, is hazardous. Some fasting taxi drivers may have been working longer than they should have been and as a result they may be dehydrated and lacking the ability to concentrate properly. Only drive in the afternoons if you absolutely have to. Booking a taxi: If you are heading out around the Iftar time, then be advised that booking a taxi may not be so easy. A lot of drivers will be breaking the fast, so availability may be difficult. Going out for dinner: If you are planning on going out for Iftar then you should book a table in advance. Restaurants are understandably busy during Ramadan evenings. Going to the mall: While a lot of businesses change their hours for Ramadan, malls remain generally open during the day – with the exception of food courts and restaurants. Some restaurants may remain open, but this will seldom be advertised. Going to a bar: Bars generally open from around 7pm, and close earlier than usual. There will be no live music, but live sport on TV will still generally be shown. Give to charity: Ramadan is a charitable time, and giving to those less fortunate will be greatly appreciated. It doesn’t have to be money, but perhaps food for Iftar.

Al Ain’s Excel Education Students Win Big! THE UAE’S YOUNGEST WHIZ KIDS VIE FOR VICTORY IN ABACUS AND MENTAL ARITHMETIC CHAMPIONSHIP Over a thousand school children with exceptional mathematical skills from across the UAE gathered recently to challenge their arithmetic capabilities in the 12th National Abacus & Mental Arithmetic Competition, hosted by the Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic System (UCMAS), UAE. Aged 5 to 14, the children were challenged to calculate complex mathematical sums using only their mental, visual and auditory skills. The talented children worked hard competing against each other in 22 categories, relying on their mental prowess and keen listening abilities to calculate multi-digit numbers in three seconds or less. The National Competition, held every year, has hosted thousands of young competitors since 2003. The UCMAS system, developed in Malaysia in 1993, is designed to help children improve their powers of calculation, thereby developing and enhancing their brain power.

Ms. Preety Dhanjal, Director, UCMAS Al Ain is bursting with pride and appreciation for the 7 winners and all 17 participants from Al Ain. She said “UCMAS provides a big boost to student’s confidence by enhancing the overall brain performance, memory power, speed and accuracy in arithmetic calculations, concentration, creativity, and social development.” The programme is carried out using abacuses during the early

stages and with that, students learn to see numbers in a totally different way.” UCMAS Al Ain is hosting their summer classes for UCMAS mental Math and DINO Art (Arts & Craft program) from 29th June, 2015. WORLD DEATH RATE

HOLDING STEADY AT 100 PERCENT

D

eath has long been considered humanity’s number one health concern. Responsible for 100 percent of all recorded fatalities worldwide, the condition has no cure. World Health Organization officials expressed disappointment Monday at the group’s finding that, despite the enormous efforts of doctors, rescue workers and other medical professionals worldwide, the global death rate remains constant at 100 percent. Death, a metabolic affliction causing total shutdown of all life functions, has long been considered humanity’s number one health concern. Responsible for 100 percent of all recorded fatalities worldwide, the condition has no cure. What with all those new radiology treatments, rescue helicopters, aerobics TV shows and what have you, one would think that we might have made a difference, however, it would appear that the death rate remains constant and total, as it has inviolably since the dawn of time. Many are suggesting that the high mortality rate represents a massive failure on the part of the planet’s health care workers and an apparent inability of doctors and scientists to adequately address the issue of death. A full case of death is not a pretty sight and in prolonged cases, total decomposition of the corpse is the result. And what about the children; it is beginning to seem possible that birth—as well as the subsequent life cycle that follows it—may be a serious safety risk for all those involved. Those who suffer from death can be highly traumatized by it, often so severely that it kills them! But it can also be very traumatic for the still-living who are left behind. The

sudden cessation of metabolic activity characteristic of terminal cases of death often leaves the dead person in a position where they are unable to adequately provide for the emotional needs of their loved ones. In the most serious cases of death, the trauma inflicted upon these still-living victims of death may continue throughout their entire lives, until their own deaths. Thus, the ‘vicious cycle’ of death trauma continues indefinitely. Everybody talks about death but nobody seems to actually be doing anything about it. I propose we stop molly-coddling death, not to mention the multi-billion-dollar hospital, mortuary, funeral and burial industries that reap huge profits from it. Consumer rights advocates and staunch anti-death activists agree with this. Why should we continue to spend billions of dollars a year on a health care industry whose sole purpose is to prevent death, only to find, perpetually, that death awaits us all? That’s called a zero percent return on our investment, and that’s not fair. It’s time the paying customer stood up to the HMOs and to the so-called ‘medical health professionals’ and said: ‘Enough is enough! I’m paying through the nose here, and I don’t want to die!’”

PICKING THE RIGHT SCHOOL

A

s the school year comes to an end, most of us parents are celebrating another end of success for our children. Be it their development in a formal or a nonformal environment that enables us to proudly say that our children are moving to some sort of next level come August. For some of us, nonetheless, this next level comes with certain pressures in regards to choosing the right school for our children. The process here is very different than in our home countries. We are faced with financial responsibilities, transportation concerns and, of course, the quality of education and school environment.

Financial Responsibilities

My husband and I are sending our first child to school this year. It was quite a daunting and stressful task as we had to take these things, along with quite a few others, into consideration.

Transportation Concerns

Unless employed by a company that provides educational fees, parents are required to pay for their children’s education out of their pockets. I believe that I speak for a great deal of us when I say, “Schools can be super expensive!” Some of the highly ranked schools in Al Ain can cost anywhere from AED 40,000 to AED 60,000 per year. These prices have forced some parents to home school their children. I spoke with one parent that said, “Yes, I could afford to send my son to another school but I don’t trust the educational practices that are in place. I’ll get a nanny and homeschool after work.” Another parent informed me that this is her last year in the country because one of her daughters will be moving up a price bracket at school and her son is now of school age. It’s just not a viable option for her to stay here and pay such high costs for school tuition.

Since every school does not provide a bussing option, some of us are faced with the obstacle of getting our children to and

from school on a daily basis. This can be extremely problematic since school hours often conflict with work schedules. Quality of Education/School Environment All schools are not created equally. After school and classroom visits as well as recommendations from other parents, we must choose the environment that will allow our child to grow and develop healthily. We look for the “burnt out” signs of teachers and try to get an authentic feel of the school itself. Does it feel safe and warm? Is the curriculum of the school comparable to the curriculum used in our home country? After considering all of these things, we were able to select a school that we were comfortable with and excited about for our child. One of my remaining concerns, however, is the curriculum, as I am not certain it will allow for easy reintegration with our school system back home when the time to repatriate arrives. Best of luck to each of you and yours in the upcoming school year!

city review GRADUATING KG STUDENTS REJOICE AT GLOBAL ENGLISH SCHOOL for the large expatriate community living in this country. The incredible performance of Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ was the highlight of the day. The impressive cast, settings, dialogues and presentation transformed the theater into a vivid living jungle.

174 children completing their two year Early Years learning programme graduated at a glittering ceremony held at the Al Ain Municipality auditorium on Saturday, 6th June 2015. H. E. GRACE RELUCIO PRINCESA, Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to the United Arab Emirates, the guest of honour, applauded the students’ achievements and advised the parent community to emphasize the four P’s; Purpose, Problems, Perseverance and Prudence. She added, “There is no shortcut to success. Recognise your children’s passion and allow that passion to evolve into their career paths. She lauded the school’s commitment to community development. She was full of praise for the great leaders of this progressive nation and their support

Speaking at the occasion, the school Principal, Mr. Terry Hopkins said “KG has been an established section in our school and the recent addition of inquiry based learning and free zoning activities adds value to the already successful child centered approach. The near 400 children participating in our early years learning programme are a testimony of our success”. “We are committed to involving parents in

the development of the young generation, thereby contributing to the success of this great nation”, he added. Global English School has always taken the lead in bringing innovations in education. At the grass root level, GES introduced the Montessori Method way back in 2008 for the first time in Al Ain and developed a unique system of integrating the Early Years Foundation Stage practices in Montessori settings. It is now the child centered approach anchored by inquiry based learning. The principal aims, Quality, Consistency, Secure Foundation, Partnership and Equality of Opportunity are firmly embedded, ensuring a smooth transition from early years practices to more serious learning.

taying slim, keeping away from cigarettes and owning a home by the age of 50 could be the secret to living to 100 years old, scientists have found. In a landmark 50-year study investigating the link between lifestyle and life span, researchers in Sweden have discovered some intriguing similarities in the habits of centenarians.

All men involved in the study were born before the outbreak of the First Word War in 1913, and they’re progress has been followed since 1963. Just 10 of the original 855 strong cohort survived until their hundredth birthday. But all were non-smokers, who had kept themselves slim and fit and who had good posture and low cholesterol and low blood pressure. They all had still been in active work until at least the age of 54; had drank no more than four cups of coffee a day and had owned their own home by the age of 50, or rented an expensive property. Having mothers who lived into their 80s or 90s was also important although paternal age of death did not seem to matter. Most of the men had also not developed dementia and were still bright and active. “The unique design has enabled us to identify the factors that influence survival after the age of 50,” says Dr Lars Wilhelmsen, of the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of

Gothenburg, who has been involved in the study for the past 50 years. “Our recommendation for people who aspire to centernarianism is to refrain from smoking, maintain healthy cholesterol levels and confine themselves to four cups of coffee a day. “The relationship between mothers age at death indicates that genetic factors play a role for longevity.” Interestingly all the 100-year-olds were still living at home and enjoying life, which backs up research by University College London that found pensioners with a sense of purpose lived two years longer. “Normally we conducted the surveys at hospitals, but we visited the seven centenarians at home,” said Dr Wilhelmsen. “All of them were clinically healthy, satisfied with their circumstances and pleased to be living where they were.” A total of 27 per cent of the original group lived to the age of 80 and 13 per cent to 90. Just 1 per cent made it to their 100th birthday. This week a study by Imperial College Suggested that Britons will live much longer than previously thought because current forecasts had underestimated advances in nutrition and medicine. They predict that life expectancy nationally will increase for men from 79.5 years for those today to 85.7 for those in 2030, and for women from 83.3 to 87.6. But many health experts believe that if people embraced all the known anti-ageing interventions that are now documented,

most could live far longer. Simple lifestyle changes such as walking regularly, cutting down on sugar, salt and fat, and taking advantage of drugs that already exist, like statins, could all extend life. A report by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine published on Friday suggested that simply sticking to World Health Organisation nutritional guidelines could add eight months to life. However trying to persuade people to do what is good for them has proved tricky, as Cardiff University found. In 1979, 2,500 men were asked to follow five simple rules – eat well, work out, drink less, keep their weight down and never smoke. Four decades on, just 25 pensioners managed to stick to the plan. But they are all far fitter and healthier than those who gave up. Dr Peter Ellwood, who carried out the study said: “We found that we could make read reductions in areas like cancer and dementia. People weren’t just living longer, they were healthier. How to live to 100 • • • • • • • •

Step Up Your Selfie Game With ‘Lily’

Called the world’s first ‘throw-and-shoot’ camera, the Lily Camera was born in University of California, Berkeley’s robotics lab. When you toss the device into the air, its four propellers send it flying up to speeds of 25 miles per hour as it takes high-quality photos and videos. Unlike other drones, the Lily Camera requires no controller as it follows the wearer’s bracelet. The camera follows the user via GPS, which can be worn on a bracelet or placed in your pocket, which communicates distance, position and speed back to the camera.

“It is a camera, which is the real difference,” said CEO and co-founder Antoine Balaresque. “Other products are really just drones that carry a camera. Lily is a camera that happens to be flying.” Equipped with an accelerometer, barometer, GPS and a front, bottom-facing camera, the camera gives users several vantage points. The company hopes that it will eventually be able to sense weather as well as terrain. On top of that, the camera is also completely waterproof! Source: cnbc.com

Pinterest Announces the Possible Launch of A “Buy” Button The online website ‘Pinterest’ recently announced that they are currently working on adding a ‘Buy’ button to allow users to make purchases directly on-site. This could launch as soon as in three to six months according to multiple sources. Currently, Pinterest’s partners like big brands pass pieces of data such as price that are shown on their Pins which they hope users will ‘repin’. Every Pin links to a website. While many product Pins have information like pricing and availability, you still need to click through to the website the Pin originated from to buy. This would allow Pinterest users to order products they without having to click over to the company’s website or app.

Right now, Pinterest already controls a whole 23% of referral traffic to e-commerce websites. On top of that, Pinterest users are 10% more likely to make a purchase than people who arrive from other social networks and they spend twice as much as users who come from Facebook, according to data from Shopify. Those numbers indicate that a ‘Buy’ button on the social network makes sense, and would benefit both Pinterest and its partners. Who knew a simple button could help a company earn a fortune? While there are only mockups to rely on. sources claim that Pinterest will likely partner with the payments company Stripe to power its new ‘Buy’ button. The Source

ars One narrows down 100 applicants for one-way mission to Mars

The Dutchb a s e d Mars One foundation, which plans to send four people to Mars, announced it has narrowed down a pool of more than 200,000 applicants to just 100 candidates. The shortlist includes candidates from 35 countries. If you had a one way ticket to Mars, would you take it? These 100 aspiring astronauts would. The Dutch foundation that’s planning to colonize Mars-and make the process a reality TV show-said it’s narrowed down a pool of more than 200,000 applicants to a shortlist of 100 potentially spacebound candidates. 34

The Source

The Mars One group is now considering 50 men and 50 women for four spots on its anticipated Red Planet mission, where winners get a one-way ticket to Mars and are expected to start colonizing it. The space start up will film the entire selection process, training and the colonization for earthling viewers. A list of candidates and their bios is published on the Mars One website. The soon to be astronauts will go to Mars in 2025 to establish a settlement. If all goes well, Mars One will keep sending groups of four people every two years to grow the colony and sustain life. The trip to Mars would be anywhere between 34,8 million miles and 250 million miles, all depending on how distant apart the planets are. It would take the astronauts about 39 days (closest approach) to 289 days (farthest approach). The could-be Mars stars hail from nearly 35 countries, and the U.S., with 38 candidates (33 U.S. born), has the most amateur astronauts in the running. The American candidates include middle-aged engineers, Ph.D. candidates in their 30s and several

contenders in their 20s. The ages of all the candidates range from 19 to 60. The candidates from other parts of the world include: 31 from Europe, 16 from Asia, seven from Africa and seven from Oceania. The final 100 were chosen after a round of online interviews and medical tests with 660 first round hopefuls, according to Dr. Norbert Kraft, chief medical officer for Mars One. Kraft said the next selection rounds will focus on composing teams of four that can endure all the hardships-physical and psychological-of permanent settlement on Mars. The final candidates are supposed to endure 10 years of training and a sevenmonth flight to Mars. Those who didn’t make the cut can get another shot at life on Mars with a new application round later this year. Mars One has said it will need approximately $6 billion to pull off its ambition of populating Mars by 2025 for its interstellar mission and TV show, but researchers have questioned the financial and physical logistics of the planetary plan since it was announced in 2012.

THE GREAT GATSBY

by F. Scott Fitzgerald A portrait of the Jazz Age in all of its decadence and excess, The Great Gatsby captured the spirit of the author’s generation and earned itself a permanent place in American mythology. Self-made, self-invented millionaire Jay Gatsby embodies some of Fitzgerald’s--and his country’s-most abiding obsessions: money, ambition, greed, and the promise of new beginnings. “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter-tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther.... And one fine morning--”Gatsby’s rise to glory and eventual fall from grace becomes a kind of cautionary tale about the American Dream.
