A huge part of Ramadan for every Muslim is observing charity, and in honour of this second pillar of Islam, I will share a verse from “The Prophet” by Khalil Gibran. This is one of my favourite literary works and the divine inspiration in this man’s creation moves and touches my soul every time I read it. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.
It is well to give when asked, but it is better to give unasked, through understanding;
For what are your possessions but things you keep and guard for fear you may need them tomorrow?
And to the open-handed the search for one who shall receive is joy greater than giving
And tomorrow, what shall tomorrow bring to the over prudent dog burying bones in the trackless sand as he follows the pilgrims to the holy city?
And is there aught you would withhold?
And what is fear of need but need itself?
Therefore give now, that the season of giving may be yours and not your inheritors'.
You give but little when you give of your possessions.
Is not dread of thirst when your well is full, thirst that is unquenchable? There are those who give little of the much which they have - and they give it for recognition and their hidden desire makes their gifts unwholesome. And there are those who have little and give it all. These are the believers in life and the bounty of life, and their coffer is never empty. There are those who give with joy, and that joy is their reward. And there are those who give with pain, and that pain is their baptism. And there are those who give and know not pain in giving, nor do they seek joy, nor give with mindfulness of virtue; They give as in yonder valley the myrtle breathes its fragrance into space. Through the hands of such as these God speaks, and from behind their eyes He smiles upon the earth.
All you have shall some day be given;
You often say, "I would give, but only to the deserving." The trees in your orchard say not so, nor the flocks in your pasture. They give that they may live, for to withhold is to perish. Surely he who is worthy to receive his days and his nights is worthy of all else from you. And he who has deserved to drink from the ocean of life deserves to fill his cup from your little stream. And what desert greater shall there be than that which lies in the courage and the confidence, nay the charity, of receiving? And who are you that men should rend their bosom and unveil their pride, that you may see their worth naked and their pride unabashed? See first that you yourself deserve to be a giver, and an instrument of giving. For in truth it is life that gives unto life - while you, who deem yourself a giver, are but a witness. And you receivers - and you are all receivers assume no weight of gratitude, lest you lay a yoke upon yourself and upon him who gives. Rather rise together with the giver on his gifts as on wings;

It’s Not Personal…
N
When I was a little fella, summer meant beach, barbecues, sport and sunburn. Each morn, shortly after sun-up, my mother would turn me outdoors stipulating that I was not to be seen again until dinner - although brief interludes for intakes of sandwiches and milk were permitted.
ary a thought was given to sunscreen, and my northern skin peeled off in freckled flakes the size of crisps. The damage was permanent. Last week, at a complimentary spa treatment, Francis the Facialist tut-tutted in dismay before diving desperately for his cabinet of corrective chemicals. It was hopeless. I left the poor man stretched out exhausted, muttering incoherently, self-medicating with herbal infusions via intravenous drip. Even in the seventies, climate change was an issue. I learned in grade four that CO2 trapped heat. But what was an eight-yearold to do about it? The lights I used to thwart the night-monsters lurking in our hallways had to draw power from somewhere, and in Australia they drew it from coal. But I wondered why, when the sun was capable of withering an entire nation prune-like, it couldn’t come from there. Of all renewable energy sources, solar has the greatest potential. To quote a beardyweirdy from the US DOE, “The theoretical potential of solar power is the integral of
12
The Source
the average flux (342.5 W/m2 · (1-0.49) = 174.7 W/m2) over the earth’s surface area = 89,300 TW.” Exactly what that means, I do not know. Clearly it’s code comprehensible only to beardies. But I’m told it represents more energy in one and a half hours than the total consumed globally per year from all sources combined. In practice it means the world’s power needs could be met from a carpet of solar panels the size of Venezuela. I know some Venezuelans, and they’d be pretty happy to carpet the country over at the moment. The US’s power needs require only an area the size of either of the Dakotas, and no-one’s going to miss one of those. In other words, it’s doable. And, believe it or not, it’s happening. More capacity for renewable power is being added each year than coal, natural gas and oil combined. And that’s great news, but for one glaring problem. If my children went to thwart the monsters in our hallway tonight, solar power couldn’t be of any help, as the sun don’t shine after dark. Seems obvious. To be practical, solar requires storage, and the power industry has never found a costeffective way to store large volumes of energy for later distribution.
By JJ Dubblejay
Fortunately, Tesla has. In early May, the electric-car company released a product called Powerwall. Billed merely as a storage solution for the home, in fact the technology heralds a sea-change in the economics of utility-scale power. Just as the cost of solar is plummeting, so too is the cost of lithium-ion batteries. Tesla is gambling that their battery “gigafactory”, now under construction, will drive the price through the floor, bringing into being costeffective storage solutions on the scale of utilities. It works like this: by storing energy during the day and releasing it at night, peak demand is shifted and reduced, bringing down energy bills for industrial consumers. The math is simple. If the cost of installing, maintaining and using Tesla’s solar-based systems comes to less than the cost of power from traditional hydrocarbon-fired systems, Walmart goes for it and we all win. Awesome. The key to averting the climate catastrophe is turning in the lock. Sooner rather than later, the captains of carbon will be shown the door. It’s not personal. Just good business.

Tell Your Kids this as Often as Possible and Change Their Lives for The Better! Kids grow up so fast, and before we know it they are out in the real world, and we are left wondering if we’ve done enough to prepare them for what’s out there! Here are a few simple things you can add to your daily conversations with your kids that can change the way they think about themselves, and others. 1. Try It! Encourage your little one to experience new things, and learn to enjoy getting outside of their comfort zone. You may have to hold their hand at first, but don’t be afraid to let go, and see how they do on their own. It’s a big, beautiful world out there, and your child should grasp every opportunity to delight in it! 2. It’s Your Choice Giving your child choices to make even early on in life will instill self confidence. Knowing that they have choices, the freedom to choose, and your support all along the way is priceless. 3. You Are Safe and Loved This may seem an odd or clunky thing to say, but letting your kid know that they are safe when they are with you is pretty important. While ensuring their safety and happiness is always the goal as a parent, verbalizing it every once in a while shows how much they are valued, and reassures them of their security. 4. You Make Me Happy While it is true that our kids bring us endless joy, they sometimes cause a few headaches. We tend to only vocalize the times that they need to be quiet, or sit down, or go to bed. Instead, make a point to let your child know how happy they make you, and how you couldn’t imagine a life without them.
5. I Trust And Believe In You Your kids never grow out of needing your approval. So start early, and don’t stop! This doesn’t mean letting them do whatever they want, but rather boosting their confidence when they make good choices, and being open to discussing options with them. Your words can build them up or tear them down, and either way, eventually your kids will grow up and find their place in the world. Don’t you want to be the one who gave them their wings? 6. Have A Great Day, Don’t Forget Who You Are Your kid is struggling to find their identity every day, and it’s happening sooner than you think. In this fast paced world we live in, it seems the angsty teenage years start at 10! It’s never too early to help build your child’s identity, and help them figure out what values to hold on to. Reminding them of who they are and how special and important they are before they leave the house – well, that’s just icing on the cake! 7. Mistakes Happen When I was a kid, I swear I spilled a glass of milk at least once a day. I cried every time. That’s right, I literally cried over spilt milk. I’m sure it got annoying, and I’m sure when my parents started poking fun at me it was all in good humor. But I became so very self-conscience about my clumsy hands and my bumbling feet that I didn’t want to move for fear of knocking something over! Instead of getting upset over spilt milk, it is far more productive to teach your kids that mistakes happen, and it’s how we deal with them that matters. You may even have an opportunity to show them how to handle a mistake in your own life! 8. I Love You Because you knew it had to be on this list somewhere, right?

PORTRAIT OF AN AMAZING
FATHER
M
ore than two decades ago, I met a woman that changed my life. She believed in me even when my own doubts cast shadows and above all else, she loved me so much that it often made me feel guilty of receiving what I may not have deserved. That same woman is still by my side today and the love I feel for her has gathered momentum with the help of two little men that have completed a beautiful relationship and transformed me into more than just a man – I am now a father!
Before getting married, I will admit that I was scared stiff and if that commitment was of any concern, then the thought of fatherhood was frightening beyond belief. That was before the miracle of meeting my little men and with them in mind, I must impress upon every father that the most important thing any man can do for his children is respect and love their mother!
IN HONOUR OF FATHER’S DAY, I HAVE COMPILED SOME OF MY FAVOURITE QUOTES: “When a father gives to his son, both laugh; when a son gives to his father, both cry.”William Shakespeare
“Fatherhood is pretending the present you love most is soap-on-a-rope.”- Bill Cosby “The greatest gift I ever had came from God; I call him Dad!” - Anonymous “When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.” - Mark Twain “My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me.” - Jim Valvano “I would want my legacy to be that I was a great son, father and friend.” - Dante Hall “My father always told me, ‘Find a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.’ ” - Jim Fox “Any man can be a Father but it takes someone special to be a dad.” - Anne Geddes “Small boy’s definition of Father’s Day: It’s just like Mother’s Day only you don’t spend so much.” - Unknown “By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he’s wrong.” - Charles Wadsworth “I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father’s protection.” - Sigmund Freud
“It is easier for a father
to have children than for children to have a real father.”- Pope John XXIII 16

MOTHERING HOPE AND RAISING SUCCESS!
I
Once again, the Holy Month of Ramadan is upon us and whether or not we are fasting, there is no reason why every human being should not be embracing some of the essential teachings that go hand in hand with this Islamic spiritual time of the year. Charity is definitely one important observance that should be a part of all of our lives and it is for this reason that I wish to feature a remarkable woman whose selfless efforts and perseverance in the face of adversity has brought more than just hope to a community. Maria Conceicao has transformed misery into meaning and turned what once seemed to be hopeless dreams into a reality that has brought dignity to the lives of so many of the children and adults in the slums of Dhaka, Bangladesh.
was not able to meet personally with Maria for this story but I assure you that I will be making every effort to meet with her in the near future and continue spreading the awareness necessary for the success of her campaign to eliminate poverty related suffering.
Maria Conceicao is the founder of The Maria Cristina Foundation, working to alleviate the difficulties faced by slum dwellers and enable the children to receive a good education while adults learn the skills needed to seek gainful employment. Maria was born in Portugal to a mother who became sick when Maria was 2 years old. An African immigrant, Maria Cristina Matos, who worked as a cleaner, agreed to look after Maria until her mother got better, but she never did get better. Maria Cristina raised Maria as one of her own alongside her 6 other children. While working for Emirates Airlines in 2005, on a trip to Dhaka, Bangladesh, Maria was able to visit a slum area and a hospital. The desperate day to day human struggle she witnessed changed Maria’s life. She cancelled her next holiday plans and instead, spent 2 weeks in the slums starting what grew to become the Maria Cristina Foundation. The Maria Cristina foundation has been in operation now for 10 years and provided education to around 600 children in total. It has always been a struggle to fund the foundation; Maria says, “In the early days there seemed to be an abundance of money in Dubai, but when the recession came donations and funding disappeared almost overnight”. Maria then had to take desperate measures to get attention, raise awareness and make public appeals for help. In 2010 Maria climbed Mount Kilimanjaro but this didn’t attract enough attention. In 2011 she made a successful trek to the North Pole and walked a marathon in each of the 7 Emirates in 7 days. In 2013 she became the first Portuguese woman to summit Mount Everest and since then has run 7 ultra marathons on 7 continents in 6 weeks, 7 ultra marathons in 7 days and 7 marathons on 7 continents in 11 days. She is a holder of 3 Guinness World Records.

Several of the foundation’s children are soon heading to top universities and careers thanks to the opportunities they’ve received. As a community magazine, The Source is reaching out to our readers during the Holy Month of Ramadan to help Maria deliver hope to her children. Please see the flyer on the opposing page to see what a little can do to change the lives of these children. God Bless You and Ramadan Kareem.

IT’S COOLER AT THE TOP!
Family Fun Day at The Mercure Grand Hotel On June 12th The Source teamed up with the majestic Mercure Grand Hotel to kick off the first “Family Fun Day” and with a group of eager parents and youngsters on board, the mood was quickly set for fun and excitement. It all began with a delicious sea food themed brunch, courtesy of the hospitable culinary and service team of the hotel restaurant. After a belly-filling feast, the party shifted poolside for some waterslide and swimming activities. With 3 fabulous waterslides to choose from, a splash pool for the toddlers and a pristine swimming pool, there was something for every aquatic desire and the families took full advantage of an absolutely glorious day. For those of you battling the summer heat in the city of Al Ain, it is important to note that it really is much more bearable at the top of Jebel Hafeet ; like the title says, “it’s cooler at the top.” At 1,240m/4,080 ft, the temperatures are always a few degrees cooler and this coupled with the ever present mountain breeze, turns a summer day not only into the most scenic one you’ll experience in the region, it also makes for a much more comfortable outdoor adventure. As the afternoon continued so did the fun and the Mercure team pulled out all the stops, engaging both kids and adults in a series of awesome games and prizes that included sack races, musical chairs, pass the balloon baby and tugs of war, just to name a few. The day expired washed in a magnificent sunset as new and old friends bid each other farewell. It was an absolutely magical day, thanks to the outstanding effort of our friends at the Mercure and we look forward to another exciting “Family Fun Day” in the near future! Remember, if the heat is getting you down this summer, head up the mountain because it’s always “cooler at the top” in more ways than just the temperature! 20

ADDING TO YOUR
FAMILY IN AL AIN
I
LaAisha Lorick is a full time mom and wife, from South Carolina, USA. She is also a teacher and best of all, sharing her parenting expertise with The Source readers.
I moved to Al Ain in 2010 and within 6 months was pregnant with our first child. Seventeen months later, I gave birth to our son and only 16 months after his birth, we were blessed with another son. In November of this year I will give birth to our fourth child born in the UAE.
can attest to some of the fears of birthing a child outside of one’s home country - finding a doctor, questioning and researching medical practices, and just being comfortable with pregnancy away from family. I have, however, experienced firsthand the competence of medical care here in Al Ain. My husband and I have also been blessed with an immense amount of support from the friends that we have made over the last five years in the UAE. My feelings and conversations about having a baby overseas have drastically changed since having our first child here. I remember, after having my daughter, women would tell me how brave I was and that they couldn’t imagine having a baby without the support of family. After having such positive experiences, I am able to easily swap stories with other mothers that

have also birthed their children here. We are able to stand in camaraderie as we have all been able to let go of our past fears of birthing and parenting in a foreign country. If you are considering starting a family here in Al Ain, but are nervous about what to expect, don’t be. There is a multitude of support to be found in our city – such as doulas, midwives and many knowledgeable and warm Obstetricians and Gynecologists. I also, recently, created a Facebook page called ‘Pregnant in Al Ain’ that seeks to support mothers pre, during, and post pregnancy. Find comfort in knowing that birthing children here is done every day, and is an incredible experience. Believe in yourself and the strength of your immediate family – this experience will only bring you closer together. Lastly, know that there is help and support whenever you need it. Happy family planning!

Accentuating Human Potential with Dignity
If you are like me, then visiting a hospital is more often than not a discouraging experience. That sterile, bright yet dull atmosphere, bathed in an antiseptic aroma with an accompanying chorus of pain and suffering, is often more than I need to be scrambling for the door. But this stereotypical description of a healthcare facility does not apply in any shape or form at Al Ain’s ProVita International Medical Center.
A
mere stone’s throw away from Al Foah Mall, stand a group of pristine villas that house a team of unsung heroes, whose selfless labour of love brings dignity and joy to some of the bravest inhabitants of our Garden City. Once inside this comfy home-like residence, a sense of family becomes very apparent.
ProVita created the long-term care market in the UAE and is marked as a ground breaking concept of providing patient centric, longterm care for ventilated patients in a personalized, nonhospital setting. Their facilities in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain provide exceptional care and rehabilitative services to ventilator-dependent residents who have been treated within ICU units of hospitals or even had to go abroad to get the quality care they needed and deserved. Although local, they provide medical and rehabilitative care at the best international level, enabling residents to enjoy their accustomed cultural and spiritual environment and most important of all, remain in close proximity to their families. As ProVita, Al Ain celebrates its 2nd anniversary of operation, we would like to share another of their many human success stories, characteristic of the team of highly qualified professionals that transform this facility into a loving and caring home for its residents. Last February, two teams from ProVita travelled to Khorfakkan to bring Mohammed Mubarak Al Alawi and Mazen Mubarak Al Alawi back to join the family at the Al Ain

social & community forum facility. The two brothers both have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weaknesses. 21 year old Mohammed had spent 4 years at Khorfakkan Hospital after suffering cardiac arrest while his 17 year old brother, Mazen, remained at home in the care of their mother and other siblings. This was to be their first reunion since Mohammed’s admittance to Khorfakkan Hospital and indeed, the beginning of a new and happier chapter in the brothers' lives. When Mohammed first arrived at Provita, he spoke very little with “yes, no and thank you” comprising the extent of his vocabulary. But sharing a room with his brother Mazen, along with the cheerful disposition of the staff at ProVita, quickly brought about a remarkable change in the boy's demeanor. It wasn’t long before Mohammed shared stories of his childhood and his experiences at Khorfakkan Hospital, especially the time his ventilator caught fire during his morning bath! Other than having a handicap, Mazen is a typical little brother and with the help of
his very patient therapist, Mabose, Mazen is now mastering the use of his new wheel chair where he spends his time playing PSP, surfing the internet, watching TV or spending quality time in the garden and Al Majlis with their new friend, Bader, who has the same condition. Since their arrival at ProVita, the brothers' level of improvement and enhanced quality of life has been incredible and along with their friend, Bader, the trio is now enjoying excursions to the mall, cinema and even football matches at the stadium. Not long ago they visited Bader’s home for a much appreciated feast of their favourite dish, biryani. My visits here are always highly inspirational and when I asked Michael Davis, CEO of ProVita, what he believed to be the key to their ongoing success, he replied with this comment: “I am very proud to be a part of the ProVita family in the UAE and the responsibility of caring for these precious Emirati lives is one we do not take lightly. Stories like those of Bader, Mohammed, and Mazen
(featured on the cover) are the reason we exist within the community and the reason we come to work every day. His Highness, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nayhan (Peace be up Him) once said, “Every individual has to perform his duty. Man is mortal, but his work is not. Therefore, work is greater than wealth”; Sheikh Zayed’s words ring as true today as they did years ago, and all of us at ProVita feel honored and privileged to perform our duty caring for the lives of our wonderful residents and their families. We will continue to work hard providing our residents with a place where they can rest assured that their dignity and well-being will always take precedence over the desire for material wealth. On the occasion of our 2nd anniversary in Al Ain and as we approach our 5th year of operation within the UAE, from myself, our founder Christina Shawky-Boehm, our residents, their families and our staff, we wish everyone a blessed Ramadan Kareem.” We at The Source would like to thank our friends at ProVita for all they do in bringing both dignity and joy to the many lives they touch – God Bless You!

RESPONSIBLE WHY ELEPHANT RIDING SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR BUCKET LIST There is an air of romance to riding an elephant. Sitting atop its back as the giant animals slowly meander down white sand beaches lapping with azure waters, or along rushing streams in the thick of the jungle; it’s the stuff stories, and bucket lists, are made of. Who doesn’t want to say: “I went to Thailand and rode an elephant” and then whip out their Facebook and scroll through the images from the adventure to all of their friends? But, the truth is, riding elephants shouldn’t be on anyone’s bucket list.
I
n America, organisations such as the Humane Society of the US and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums have come out against riding elephants because of abuse the elephants undergo to learn how to accept riders, and safety concerns. So, why are people still riding them? For most, it is simply lack of awareness. If people saw the videos (which can be found all over the internet) of elephants being beaten with bullhooks or electric prods, or worse, would they be so keen to hop aboard these animals for the sake of saying “I rode an elephant?” - Probably not.
Electric prods and bullhooks aside, there are a variety of reasons people should skip riding an elephant and opt for more humane ways to get up-close to these creatures. Still debating whether or not you should ride an elephant? Here are more reasons you should skip the trek and head to a sanctuary that doesn’t have rides or circuses. THE TRAINING A long-time tradition in the Thai culture, the Phajaan or crush, is the training method elephants undergo to become a part of the tourism industry. As young elephants, they are torn from their mothers and entrapped in a small confine, then ritualistically abused with bullhooks and bamboo

my world sticks spiked with nails, as well as starved, deprived of sleep and worse, to crush their spirits and become submissive to humans. This is the general and accepted practice in Thailand, and the ones every elephant has undergone that is at a trekking camp or circus. If the fact the in order to be trained to be a part of tourism isn’t enough to convince you skip riding an elephant, there’s more. Elephant Health Their spines cannot support the weight of people. Carrying people on their backs all day can lead to permanent spinal injuries. Imagine carrying a 50 pound backpack for nine hours a day, every day on your back. Even after an hour or so, you can feel the weight of the backpack. Imagine what it would feel like to have it on your back nearly all of your waking hours, not to mention the long-term damage that can result. It’s the same with elephants. Not only is there the issue of their spines not being made to carry people, but the actual implications from having the chair or Howdah attached to their backs. The contraption rubs on the back, causing blisters that can get infected. In addition, there’s the wear and tear on the elephant’s feet. Long-term trekking can cause foot infections and injuries.
SOCIAL INTERACTION Elephants are a lot like humans. They socialize, have families and friends, feel pain, sorrow, happiness and more. When they are at trekking camps, they are often times not with other elephants. They live their lives essentially in solitary confinement at some camps. LIVING CONDITIONS Babies are chained to mothers during treks, which can cause the little ones harm. When they are chained to their moms on a trek, they must keep pace with the mom as she walks, which is often times difficult. In addition, they cannot stop and rest or nurse. They must continue trekking. Often times to continue trekking, the guide (or mahout) will prod them with a bullhook to keep them moving. The bullhook, which elephants remember from their torture during the phajaan, can immediately strike fear in them. For the small few, this fear can trigger a reaction that can not only hurt the
elephants, but also the riders on them. Aside from the actual trek, the camps chain these elephants when they are not working. They don’t feed them enough, or give them enough water. Many people report visiting trekking camps and seeing elephants swaying, pacing and bobbing their heads, all of which are signs of serious psychological stress. DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR... A good rule to remember is that if a tourist outfit offers anything other than getting to spend time with elephants; it is not friendly to them. Any outfit that offers riding, circuses or paintings means they have undergone horrific abuse in order to get them to where they are. Remember, all of these elephants have suffered through the abusive and torturous crush. And while some are more friendly than others, and don’t employ the use of bullhooks, the sheer fact that the elephants are trekking means they are being harmed. What can you do if you don’t want to ride elephants? Depending on where in the world you are, there are plenty of true conservation projects that allow you to feed them, bathe them and spend time with them without causing them further harm. Parks like the Elephant Nature Park or Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary in Northern Thailand are two that are reputable and allow humanelephant interaction without compromising the elephant’s safety.

by Willie Nelson "Unvarnished. Funny. Leaving no stone unturned."
What I say is that this is the story of my life, told as clear as a Texas sky and in the same rhythm that I lived it. It's a story of restlessness and the purity of the moment and living right. Of my childhood in Abbott, Texas, to the Pacific Northwest, from Nashville to Hawaii and all the way back again. Of selling vacuum cleaners and encyclopedias while hosting radio shows and writing song after song, hoping to strike gold. It's a story of true love, wild times, best friends, and barrooms, with a musical sound track ripping right through it.
