from the Editor

It’s been another busy week here at The Source as we all try to settle back into a normal routine now that the school holidays are over. We hope you enjoyed our special back to school issue last week and that the kids are all busy coloring pictures of their favorite superheroes as part of Babyshop’s back to school contest. Don’t worry if they didn’t get a chance yet, the contest has another two weeks to go. This week, we decided to take a look at Pinterest, the fastest growing social networking site ever! If you haven’t heard of it before, don’t worry. It’s really simple and a lot of fun but, I am warning you now, it is highly addictive! Talking of obsessions, we took a trip to Miyabi Sushi in Dubai to meet Shaima and Amna Al Shirawi, Emirati sisters who come from a family of sushi-holics! The women chatted about realizing their dream of owning a Japanese restaurant, the hard work that went into making it a success and their hopes for the future. Having sampled some of their most popular dishes, and with very reasonable prices to boot, I’d definitely recommend a visit the next time you’re in Dubai! We also have a roundup of this week’s news and sports, the lowdown on what’s going on across the city, recipes, beauty tips and lots more to keep you entertained. Looking forward to hearing from you. Happy reading!

The summit held under the theme “International collaboration: An enabler for prevention” will center on cross-country cooperation to combat online child abuse.

The conference will see experts fly in from Australia, the UK, the USA, New Zealand and the Virtual Global Taskforce’s four other members including its only Arab member, the UAE.

Speaking to Gulf News, VGT chairman, Neil Gaughan explained “No single agency can deal with this crime in isolation. This international conference provides an opportunity for all of us to learn, understand

The Virtual Global Taskforce seeks to build an effective, international partnership of law enforcement agencies, non-government organizations and industry to help protect children from online child abuse.

The UAE balloonists surpassed their European competitors, including those from France and Norway. Captain Abdul Azia Al Mansouri, Pilot of the UAE Balloon team, paid tribute to Lt General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior for his continued support in the venture. KHALIFA PORT OPENS IN ABU DHABI It was full steam ahead for the UAE’s Khalifa Port this week as it opened for business on Saturday. The project has taken six years and AED 26bn but opened on budget and as scheduled, marking a good start to the venture. The port is the gateway to Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (Kizad), a project that aims to substantially boost Abu Dhabi’s economy over the next 20 years. The port will be seen as competition for the region’s shipping traffic with neighboring emirate Dubai and their Jebel Ali Port. Once completed, Kizad will cover approximately 365sq km, covering an area larger than the entire country of Malta. With a current annual capacity of 2.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) the port will increase this to 5 million TEU over the next few years. The long term goal is to increase to 15 million TEU by the year 2030. Khalifa Port will also begin to gradually take over all container traffic from the existing Mina Zayed port in the Capital, which has already surpassed its capacity of 1 million TEUs.

DOCTOR RECRUITMENT TOO SLOW

Abu Dhabi is falling behind when it comes to meeting the health demands of its citizens across various hospitals in the city. The Health Authority of Abu Dhabi (HAAD) issued new figures showing the employment of a total of 4900 doctors from 2010-2011, a figure which does not effectively match the growth of population in the city, which rose from 2321003 to 2422400 during the same period. Should the population increase at the same rate, it is estimated that by 2021, more than 3200 doctors will need to be recruited to meet soaring demands and

cope with staff turnover. This recruitment process is currently hindered by the time span required to issue licenses to newly recruited medical staff. The Chief Strategy Officer at Al Noor Hospital, Dr. Sami Alom advised that this lengthy process licensee is something that needs to be solved immediately. A shortage of doctors means that quality of care is impacted, the amount of waiting time for patients is increased and there are added financial costs for the health authority. Dr. Alom hopes to find a solution that can be found to issue license to new doctors more quickly and efficiently.

Following a new merit-based qualification, which allows only the top 16 teams to compete, the UAE have graciously accepted their instruction and hope that the decision helps rugby sevens’ progression as a whole.

With the UAE team being formed only two short years ago, after the breakup of the Arabian Gulf Rugby Football Union, they were given a pass to last year’s Dubai event as a celebratory gesture. The team went onto suffer some major losses and finished 9th on the HSBC Asian Sevens circuit, which wasn’t impressive enough to guarantee them a recall to this year’s event.

Head of Development and Performance at the International Rugby Board, Mark Egan, told Gulf News, “While UAE will not be competing in the HSBC Sevens World Series event at this year’s 2012 Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens, the future for rugby in the UAE is bright. From a rugby sevens perspective, the UAE RA is putting in place some very exciting plans with a view towards qualification for the Asian Games in 2014 and future Olympic Games. Are You Pinning Yet? By Hayley Skirka

“It’s like fantasy football for girls” The wisely spoken words of some poor man who has now become secondary in his wife’s eyes thanks to the revolution that is Pinterest. And he has a point; Pinterest is pretty addictive, once you get into it. I have to disagree with the gender statement though, considering Pinterest users are more than 50 per cent male in the UK. So what exactly is Pinterest? Well, in a nutshell, it’s a virtual pinboard that lets you post images of anything you want to while browsing through others’ boards to see what they’ve posted. Really, that’s essentially all Pinterest is but, in reality, it’s a whole lot more. People use Pinterest to plan their wedding, decide on their next holiday destination or put together a menu for a dinner party. Scrolling through boards, you can ‘like’ or ‘re-pin’ anything you like the look of, meaning that this post will now appear on your own pinboard. You can have as many boards as you like, with different themes or categories and you can ‘follow’ other users who have similar interests to you. You can also install a ‘pin-it’ button to your

12

thesourceuae.com

bookmarks, which allows you to pin any image, on any website, to one of your own pinboards. Getting back to the gender issue, originally Pinterest was solely dominated by females. It started as a kind of virtual scrapbooking and, since it’s mostly housewives who are into this, the female userwship was startlingly higher than the male. In the US, the ratio of female to male users is still much higher, but in the UK things are a lot more even. With loads of car, motorcycle, sport, food, technology and DIY boards popping up all over the place, the Pinterest world is definitely shifting to more masculine territory. Refreshingly, Pinterest is pretty sparse on advertisements, banners, rules and regulations. There is a list of ‘Pin-etiquette’, that you have to follow, but it’s not overly forceful with the number one rule simply stating that you should ‘Be Respectful’. When you were a kid, did you ever sit down with a catalogue and circle all the things that you wanted? Well, Pinterest is kind of the adult equivalent of that, except now you can show those circled items to the whole world and you have a much bigger catalogue to browse through!

FEATURE

This week, I spent quite a bit of time on the site, all in the name of research of course, and it’s amazing how quickly the hours get away from you when you start browsing through boards! Here are a couple of the more interesting accounts I came across…

Lunchbox ideas

Interior

‘Ideas to steal’ is an interior design site that has thousands of pins focused on ideas that you can take and make your own. There’s the typical bathroom, bedroom, living room and kitchen boards as well as some funky home products, a board based solely on staircases and loads of other unique ideas to help liven up your home.

Kristin Houston has a board called ‘Fun Foods for Little Ones’ and it’s definitely worth a follow. From monkey-faced sandwiches to jellyfilled rainbow oranges, there’s some great lunchbox ideas perfect now that the kids are heading back to school.

Travel

For all you travel enthusiasts out there, the Travel Channel pinboards are a must follow. Packed with images from all over the globe, you can watch whales in Sou thern California, check out thatched cottages in Belize or see the view from a stunning man sion on the Italian Amalfi Coast. Perfect for planning your next getaway or even just for a daily dose of escapism.

Technology

‘The Future is Here’ is a board created by Daniel Bear Hunley, one of the most followed people on Pinterest that follows cutting edge developments in the world of technology. With over a million followers, you’ll be in good company and be among the first to know about new gadgets and gizmos as they hit the market through the sites detailed posts, videos and photographs.

Celebrities

One of the great things about Pinterest is that, just like us, the celebs have become a little obsessed with the concept of pinning, meaning there’s loads of celebrity accounts for you to follow. You can opt to follow Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Hollywood’s Ryan Seacrest, First lady Michelle Obama , John Lennon’s wife Yoko Ono or celebrity chef Paula Deen amongst hundreds of others. And of course, don’t forget to check out and get pinning on our boards at TheSourceUAE. thesourceuae.com

STUFF for men

A Genuine Fake? By Alex Hennawi

Copy or Fake? That’s what you’ll hear if you’re one of the lucky ones. I say lucky as, all too often, many of us never get to know that we’ve just parted with our hard earned cash for a counterfeit electrical item. We simply buy it, and walk away thinking we got a great deal on what, turns out to be, some dodgy product that only manages to last a few short months. The problem is a rising one. On August 5th, The National printed a story telling how 4 million dirham worth of counterfeit electrical products, bearing the instantly recognizable logos and names of some of the most trusted manufacturers in the world, was seized by Dubai Police. I’ll admit that, on many occasions I’ve been greedy enough to pay what I thought was too little for too much, my Western mindset of blindly trusting a retailer my chaperone. Although the Government does their best to protect consumers, all too often the small or

mid-sized stores who are struggling to survive will sell you a copy. And, like I said, if you’re lucky they’ll ask you first. The other side of the coin is the retailers who don’t ask, and in fact, say nothing. These unscrupulous crooks sell non Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) but fully banded electronics and pass them off as originals. Most of these items can’t be verified for quality nor are they guaranteed. Durability and safety issues like electrical faults and fire hazards should be enough to scare you off. Saving a few dirhams is always a motivating factor but is rarely worth it in the end. Whether you’re after the latest games console, Smart TV or the newest tablet, trust your instinct and keep your guard up. I’m not for a minute suggesting that all of the city’s smaller stores are dubious, far from it, many are staffed with some of the friendliest, honest people in the city. But, it’s never a bad idea to insist on a written invoice, shop around and beware of prices that seem too good to be true. Very often, that’s exactly what they are!

By the end of the summer holidays we all tend to suffer from the ‘post-holiday blues’. The Sushi-holic Sisters By Hayley Skirka

I

n the heart of Dubai, nestled among the glistening skyscrapers and towering office blocks, lies Miyabi Sushi & Bento; the brainchild of Shaima and Amna Al Shirawi, Emirati sisters and successful entrepreneurs. Glowing Japanese lanterns and a bamboo fronted outdoor area subtly entice passersby into the restaurant, where they can experience a unique fusion of Japanese cuisine, Californian customer service and Emirati hospitality. It was four years ago, on a family trip to San Francisco, that 24-year-old Shaima and 21-year-old Amna first discovered Miyabi Sushi, a company that dates all the way back to 1987. “We were walking on Fisherman’s Wharf, and we went into the restaurant and just loved it so much”, explains Shaima. Having always dreamt that, one day, they would have their own Japanese restaurant, the women approached the company about bringing the brand to the UAE. However, things were not plain sailing, “They are a chain of eight restaurants, only in San Francisco, and they were not really interested to come to Dubai. But then we invited them to come and see Dubai, and they were amazed by what they saw and eventually agreed to come.” The huge range of existing Japanese restaurants already in Dubai isn’t something which fazed the sisters. “In Dubai a lot of people are like ‘sushi addicts”, says Shaima. “They are so into the Japanese culture and they really love Japanese food, most of the Japanese restaurants are full. We wanted to have a restaurant with high-end food, quality and taste but with affordable prices.” The delicious sampler platters that arrived on our table soon after certainly suggest that this is a goal Miyabi has accomplished.

Amna is quick to add that the restaurant aims to offer patrons “a lot more variety. We have California rolls, but in many different ways like the Jumping California [deep fried] and the Muni Roll [named after the Californian metro system and drenched in cheese and tangy sauce].” Regional manager Mr. Chad Yang, interjects, “Quality, if you taste our food and if you see the presentation then you will notice a difference.” Presentation is certainly something the Japanese-born chefs have a lot of fun with. The popular Golden Gate Roll is a sushi dish created in such a way that it somewhat accurately depicts the Golden Gate Bridge in California while the Cali-Flower Roll is shaped like an intricate flower. With menus displayed on iPads, customers can take their time scrolling through each of these beautiful masterpieces, before selecting which handcrafted meal they’d like to try for themselves. Successfully launching a business is not something that comes without a lot of hard work, something that Amna and Shaima discovered via their business studies at The American University of Sharjah and The American University of Dubai respectively. Luckily for them, their father, Mohamed, is an experienced businessman and was on hand to help out. Amna explains, “Our father was always there for us, if there was anything, he was there to help us. He also told us every business has difficulties but if a person gives up then you are never going to get anywhere.” As they speak of their father, a noticeable glow appears on both the women’s faces and it’s obvious that he has been a true source of inspiration for them. One such obstacle, that the women faced when they launched Miyabi, was the problem of parking, in such a central location in Dubai. They have since successfully overcome this by introducing their own valet system, a definite plus point when you’re located in one of Dubai’s busiest districts!

a unique fusion of Japanese cuisine, Californian customer service & Emirati hospitality.

16

thesourceuae.com

When they do get some downtime, they have their own favorite eateries, other than Miyabi of course. Amna enjoys “Scoozi, as my husband likes Italian and I like Japanese” and Shaima loves “Nobu, Zuma and Le Petit Maison.” With their hard work looking like it has paid off, I asked the ladies what life lessons they might wish to share with others.

LIFELESSONS Never give up Always have faith in yourself and believe that you can do it Family owned businesses are often hugely successful but that’s not to say they don’t come with a minefield of potential problems. Balancing work and home life and coping with family feuding are challenges faced by many and yet, somehow, the sisters seem to have escaped this. Looking at her sister and laughing, Shaima says, “We haven’t faced any of this and hopefully we won’t face it in the future.” Perhaps this is down to their differences; Shaima being the organized one, able to work full time at the Central Bank and organize proceedings in Miyabi, and Amna being more creative, juggling bringing up her young daughter with the day to day running of the business. Miyabi truly is a family affair with the ladies’ younger sister, Alia, heading off to San Francisco next week to visit the California based restaurants and the whole family being practically in love with sushi. Shaima laughs, “I have a 4-year-old sister that, when she wakes up in the morning, she asks “will you take me for sushi?”. Having travelled to Japan in the summer and thoroughly loved the country, Shaima has many ideas for the company’s future. At present they are concentrating on social media campaigns and, “really focusing on word of mouth; we won’t let anyone leave the restaurant unsatisfied.” With plans to open another Miyabi in Dubai Media City in the near future, a whole new range of Korean food about to be launched and a five year plan of having six or seven restaurants, it’s a busy time for both sisters.

EDUCATION

Homeschooling: The Pros & Cons As parents, the education of our children is one of our most important responsibilities. Over the years, there has been increased debate over whether homeschooling is a better alternative to the current public school system. This method of teaching has become increasingly popular over the years; however often gets somewhat of a bad rap. We thought we’d take a look at the subject, advantages and disadvantages to help you decide whether or not homeschooling is for you. By Khudayja Saloojee

Advantages SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING

It’s a well known fact that everybody learns differently. What suits one person may not necessarily work for another. Traditional schooling methods tend to set everyone on the same level, according to age rather than ability. A homeschooled child has more room to explore and the freedom to discover their individual strengths and weaknesses. This approach to learning helps to develop self-confidence, fosters creativity and has been known to help mould children into responsible adults. FLEXIBILITY

When you home school kids, you’re not bound by school hours or holidays. Parents have the freedom to structure school schedules to their own liking, plan off-season holidays and visit parks and museums during the week. BUILDS CLOSER FAMILY TIES

Children attending traditional schools spend most of their day away from home. By the time they finish extracurricular activities, eat dinner and do their homework, there is very little quality time left to spend with parents and family. Homeschooling, on the other hand, encourages closer bonds.

Disadvantages TIME & EFFORT

In order for homeschooling to be effective, it requires a whole lot of time and effort. From choosing the right curriculum and designing interactive lesson plans to recording your child’s progress and ensuring that they meet their academic goals, parents must be sure that they are fully equipped to make a serious commitment to their child’s schooling. SACRIFICE

Homeschooling often requires one parent or member of the family to give up their career. This can be a huge sacrifice for the family as a whole, who can often struggle to survive on one income. SOCIAL SKILLS

Homeschooled kids miss out on the opportunity to mix with their peers. Important social skills, such as sharing and working in a group, are often slower to develop in kids who are homeschooled than in those who attend mainstream schools. There are, however a number of organizations in the UAE, who try to combat this downside by arranging field trips between groups of homeschooled children. Sports clubs, music lessons or dance classes are other ways that can help build the social skills of homeschooled children.

EDUCATION

CCTV IN ADEC SCHOOLS By Sue Fulton

What’s it really like to home school your kids?

Home schooling was a choice I made the day our first son was born when I decided that I didn’t want to miss a single day of his childhood. Three children later, I have been lucky enough to be able to stick to that decision. Home schooling is my job, but so is tending the house and raising our children. It can be very challenging at times but is always rewarding. It is a job I love to wake up to and I get to go to bed satisfied. The most challenging aspect at the moment is trying to balance school with the constant demands of my toddlers. Luckily, my son is now six and very motivated to work on his own while I tend to my younger two daughters. Home schooling means my son has the benefit of one-on-one teaching. Being his mother, I want the very best education for him so, when I see his weak areas, I push him to work harder. For example, he is not very fond of math so I sit with him and try different methods of helping him. We have counted bottle caps, shells and marbles, anything really that we can find around the house or outside. I am right beside him making sure he fully understands each concept. When I see his strengths, I try to make it fun for him. He is a very imaginative little boy and we have had a lot of fun with arts and crafts, building things from boxes, cardboard tubes, socks, papier-mâché and countless other materials. The rewards for me come when he finally understands a concept. We have been working on reading a lot and, every day, we work with flash cards and sounding out letters. In the beginning it was very difficult for him but, as each the weeks went by, I began to see him understand his sight words. He would get excited and point out some of these words when we went out. As a teacher, this is very rewarding and as a parent it is doubly so. My days are full, busy and a joy for me. I wake up with my three children and teach them important values and concepts. I not only educate them but, I prepare them for the outside world and life as a whole. We get to share memories that will forever be etched in our minds.

With the advent of the new academic year, the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) will complete its project of installing surveillance cameras in 25 modern secondary schools around the emirate of Abu Dhabi. The project has already been implemented in 18 schools across the country and assists teachers and guidance staff in monitoring students’ behavior, guarding their safety and keeping them secure, in addition to ensuring the commitment of teachers towards their work. The Director of Information and Computing Technology at ADEC, Mr. Mohammed Younis, explained that the idea behind the plan is to develop a better learning environment for students. After completion of phase one, 87 schools will have cameras installed. This will then be extended throughout the Emirate. The project will be followed up by the installation of surveillance cameras in school buses to follow students on their way to and from school in order to further protect children’s safety at all times.

ADEC hosts Bedaya Forum Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) held its 3rd annual Bedaya Forum at the Abu Dhabi Exhibition Centre last week. The two-day forum was addressed by HE Dr. Khamis Al Khaili, Director General of ADEC in the presence of HE Mohammed Salem Al Dhaheri, Executive Director, School Operations, HE Maihad Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Ministry of Education, ADEC staff and administrative members across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The aim of the forum was to encourage communication, develop a clear work vision, discuss the New School Model (NSM) and ADEC’s plan for a smooth transition from traditional rote learning to a more modern interactive approach as part of the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030. The NSM was first introduced to Kindergarten classes in 2010 and, starting next week, will be rolled out across all ADEC classes up to Grade 5. The next phase of the reform will be the introduction of the NSM for secondary pupils next year. The priority was to get the NSM into place as soon as possible. Dr Khaili urged “We must change and do so quickly, cycle two and three.” Education represents 16 per cent of Abu Dhabi Government’s 2012 key performance indicators highlighting the importance given to education as a basic priority. HE Dr. Khaili emphasized the roles of schools in future skill building using the latest NSM method for all cycles in a gradual manner, indicating that the next stage requires cognitive and knowledge based skills that are consistent with 21st century requirements. thesourceuae.com

URBAN Woman

Beauty Tips & Tricks By Etdal Abougouche

Here are some useful, easy and pretty simple tips and tricks to help you maintain and boost your natural beauty. From lashes to lips, we’ve got it covered!

Hair

How often should you trim it? Ideally, you should trim your hair every six to eight weeks although if you constantly use styling products (straighteners/curling tongs/blow dryer) then you should be aiming more for 4 to 6 weeks. When it comes to bangs (or fringes for our UK readers) you should trim these every two weeks.

Buying Shampoo It’s not really necessary to buy the ultra-expensive shampoos on sale at the salon, you simply have to take time to pick the right shampoo for your hair type. Follow these tips: • • •

Color treated hair: Opt for a shampoo specifically designed for colored hair which will be gentler and help preserve the color. Dull, dry or damaged hair: Try an intense damage therapy or an ultra-hydrating shampoo. Also, use a hot oil treatment once a month to restore moisture. Curly hair: Choose a shampoo that will moisturize your hair and give protection against humidity. It should contain silicon and glycerin ingredients to help with deep hydration.

Hands and Nails

File your nails regularly to keep them in perfect shape and a nice length. Apply cuticle cream daily to moisturize and soften the layer of skin surrounding the nail. Use a strengthening basecoat polish to strengthen and protect nails. Try the following hand and nail soak: • 2 tbsp of honey • 1 tbsp of liquid hand soap • 1 tbsp of olive oil Add the ingredients to ¼ cup of warm water and soak hands for 5-10 minutes. Rinse off, pat dry and follow-up with a hand cream, then sit back and enjoy your baby soft hands!

Skin Care in the Sun

Sunscreen is essential to protect your skin from the sun’s dangerous UV rays which cause aging and increase your risk of skin cancer. Here, in the UAE, a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more is essential to protect your skin. If you have sensitive or very pale skin, then you need to opt for an SPF of 50. Make sure you reapply thoroughly after swimming or a workout. Stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm as this is when it’s at its strongest and always wear a hat if you plan on venturing out in the sun.

Time & Money Saving Tips ● ● ●

● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Sleep with your hair in a braid to reveal loose waves in the morning. Rather than spending a fortune at the salon, buy a color from the store and ask a friend to help you color it at home. Bad hair day? Simply tie your hair into a ponytail, wrap your hair around the base of it and secure with a bobby pin. Use hairspray to tame any frizz. Or, try a cute, loose braid worn to the side. If you run out of eye makeup remover, simply put some olive oil on a cotton ball and dab around the eye area. It’s true! Putting cucumber slices on your eyes really does reduce swelling and dark, under eye circles. Line the lower rims of your eyelids with white to instantly brighten eyes. Want to skip the mascara? Rub Vaseline onto your eyelashes instead. Put toothpaste on pimples before bed to dry them out. An added plus is that your skin will smell minty fresh! Exfoliate your lips by scrubbing them gently with a damp toothbrush. Can’t find your blusher? Use your lipstick! Simply dab a little on the apples of your cheeks and blend in with your fingertip.

BUSINESS

Everybody just calm down!

Conflict in the workplace can be incredibly destructive to good teamwork. Managed in the wrong way, real and legitimate differences between people can quickly spiral out of control, resulting in situations where co-operation breaks down and the team’s mission is threatened. This is particularly the case when the wrong approaches to conflict resolution are used.

W

hen a group begins to work as a team, productivity and efficiency are increased. Teams not only improve their work output, they also develop the ability to police themselves and resolve internal team conflicts. A team leader who understands the various elements of teamwork that assist in conflict resolution can better prepare the team to take care of issues as they arise and maintain group productivity.

By following the tips below, you can help keep contentious discussions positive and constructive. This helps to prevent antagonism and dislike which are so often the causes of conflict spinning out of control. •

Make sure that good relationships are the first priority: As far as possible, make sure that you treat the other person calmly and that you try to build mutual respect. Do your best to be courteous to one another and remain constructive under pressure.

Keep people and problems separate: Recognize that, in many cases, the other person is not just ‘being difficult’; real and valid differences lie behind conflictive positions. By separating the problem from the person, real issues can be debated without damaging working relationships.

Pay attention to the interests that are being presented: By listening carefully you’ll most likely understand why the person is adopting his or her position.

The good news is that by resolving conflict successfully, you can solve many of the problems that it brings to the surface, as well as gaining some unexpected benefits.

Listen first; talk second: To solve a problem effectively you have to understand where the other person is coming from, before defending your own position.

Set out the ‘facts’: Agree and establish the objective, observable elements that will have an impact on the decision.

Explore options together: Be open to the idea that a third position may exist, and that you can get to this idea jointly.

In many cases, conflict in the workplace just seems to be a fact of life. We’ve all seen situations where different people with different goals and needs have come into conflict. And we’ve all seen the often-intense personal animosity that can result. The fact that conflict exists, however, is not necessarily a bad thing: As long as it is resolved effectively, it can lead to personal and professional growth. In most cases, effective conflict resolution is what makes the difference between positive and negative outcomes.

Increased understanding: The discussion needed to resolve conflict expands people’s awareness of the situation, giving them an insight into how they can achieve their own goals without undermining those of other people.

Increased group cohesion: When conflict is resolved effectively, team members can develop stronger mutual respect and a renewed faith in their ability to work together.

Improved self-knowledge: Conflict pushes individuals to examine their goals in close detail, helping them understand what is most important to them, sharpening their focus, and enhancing their effectiveness.

This being said, if conflict is not handled effectively, the results can be truly damaging. Conflicting goals can quickly turn into personal dislike, teamwork can break down and talent is wasted as people disengage from their work. It’s all too easy to end up in a vicious downward spiral of negativity and recrimination.

It helps to take a positive approach to conflict resolution, where discussion is courteous and non-confrontational and the focus is on issues rather than individuals. This, combined with people being willing to listen carefully and explore facts, issues and possible solutions are effective methods for resolving conflict in the workplace and to ultimately calm everybody down. thesourceuae.com

By Khudayja Saloojee

KINDNESS

indness isn’t an act to gain from but should be done because it’s the right thing to do. The act of kindness can be expressed in many ways; a warm greeting to a colleague, spending some free time doing charity work or simply giving a friend a ride home. People who witness your generosity can be truly touched by what they see you do. The ripple effect of kindness is far-reaching and can bring a sense of richness and fulfillment to our lives with the added bonus of promoting good health. Kind acts have the following side effects: Kindness makes us happier When you do something kind, you feel a sense of exhilaration. Maybe you’ve just made someone’s day or helped ease a colleague’s loneliness. The reaction to this act of kindness may lead to a stronger bond. Helping someone else with a random act of kindness will also give you a sense of satisfaction, so much so that giving to others is often referred to as a “helper’s high”. When we’re kind to one another, we feel a connection and new relationships are forged, or existing ones strengthened. Kindness keeps us healthy There have been a number of studies undertaken which demonstrate the positive effects of kindness on health. These effects include lowering of stress levels which leads to a greater sense of calm and relaxation, healthier hearts, reduced blood pressure and an increase in energy levels. Kindness slows down aging Aging is a combination of many things but, the two main processes that speed it up are free radicals and inflammation, both of which result from an unhealthy lifestyle. Acts of kindness produce oxytocin (a hormone released during hugging, touching or bonding) which is 24

thesourceuae.com

said to be cardio-protective. Studies indicate that oxytocin reduces the levels of free radicals and inflammation in the cardiovascular system, thus slowing down the aging process. Kindness is infectious Our acts of kindness can inspire others to be kind, which can create a knock-on effect that spreads outwards to our friends and our friend’s friends. On Nelson Mandela’s birthday, to help celebrate this special day, South African citizens are encouraged to set aside 67 minutes of their day for some selfless service. This service could include assisting in rebuilding and painting houses, helping out in soup kitchens or simply cleaning up the neighborhood. The 67 minutes represent the 67 years Nelson Mandela spent making South Africa a better place. Just as a stone creates waves when it’s dropped in a pond, so do acts of kindness, rippling outwards, touching other’s lives and inspiring kindness wherever the wave goes. How can you show kindness? It’s impossible to list every way that kindness can be shown or given. You simply need to attune yourself to situations where kindness could help. Once you get in the habit of it, it becomes almost a state of mind or an attitude by which you live by. ● Why not start by making a list of places where you could help? Maybe the local homeless shelter, hospital or charity organization is looking for volunteers? ● Further afield, with the drought in Somalia or the troubles in Syria, you may want to donate financially. ● Even simpler acts of kindness include making eye contact with the cashier at your local supermarket and wishing them a great day, complimenting a work colleague or flashing a huge smile at the receptionist. Showing kindness, even on a small level, is a great for both you and everyone around you! Giving without expecting anything in return has its own rewards.

The Secrets of The Souk By Khudayja Saloojee

I always find a visit to the souk is a journey of discovery. The word souk is Arabic for marketplace and dhows from the Far East and India have historically offloaded cargo in these delightful Arabian markets. As the years have passed by, the types of good have diversified, and you can now find everything from spices, silk and perfume to electronic goods, souvenirs and reliable household appliances. Located in the Al Markaziyah District of Abu Dhabi, the historic Central Market was the hub of business and trading when Abu Dhabi first started its rapid growth as a city in the early 1970s. The souk was host to about 1000 traders and the heart of the city for over 30 years. Recently, the souk has been thoroughly revamped and the extraordinary architecture reinterprets a traditional marketplace to create a 21st century tourist destination. Intimate passageways lead onto vaulted open spaces and, around every corner, there is something enticing to explore. It’s now the pivot for local food, chic boutiques and traditional stalls, all of which are housed under one roof.

MY WORLD

SICILY: Through The Lens By Lisa Treffry-Goatley

Although only about 3km of sea separates Sicily from the mainland of Italy, most Sicilians regard themselves as having a distinct identity. To the tourist, Sicilia is certainly Italia, but there is also something particular about this remarkable island that is unparalleled elsewhere in Italy. Perhaps its intriguing eclecticism can be attributed to the centuries of diverse people and cultures that have inhabited the place: Phoenicians, Greeks, Arabs, Romans, Normans and Spaniards. The result is a rich accumulation of architecture, cuisine, aesthetic and agricultural endeavors that are surprising, pleasing and truly unforgettable. A trip around the southeast corner of Sicily will reward you with pristine Mediterranean scenes complete with long, white beaches, charming villages, ancient buildings and an abundant choice of delicious food.

Crossing from mainland Italy to Sicily with Calabria in the distance

One of the most scenic routes to the island is to take the train from Rome or Naples, travelling along the beautiful Calabrian coastline before crossing the strip of sea to Messina. The entire train is shunted into the ferry, and the ferry ride itself (around 25 minutes) provides splendid views of Calabria and of Sicily’s north east coast. Several airlines offer quick flights from the Italian mainland to the major cities of Palermo and Catania.

Siracusa –

Market in Or tiga The morning market (closes around 2pm) in the old part of Siracusa, Ortiga, is a marvel of food stalls: boasting all types of enticing fruit, vegetables, cheese, bread, herbs, spices, sweets, and other local food delights. Even if you aren’t tempted to buy anything, the sights, sounds and smells that will surround you make it worth a visit. 26

MY WORLD Siracusa –

Statue of Simon Peter (St Peter) in the Piazza del Duomo For more than 500 years, Siracusa was Sicily’s most important city and this is reflected in the range of monuments and architecture in the city. The traces of diverse inhabitants and migrants, and an ancient history, are visible all around with clear influences from Hellenic (Greek), Arabic, early Christian, European Renaissance and Baroque cultures.

Marzamemi –

View across the Harbor This picturesque village, far along the southeast coast of Sicily, is clustered around a captivating square and harbor, with the disused tonnara warehouse an atmospheric reminder of Marzamemi’s history (tonnara was the traditional tuna fishing industry). In summer, the village and its wonderful beaches are packed with tourists, so if you prefer a less crowded experience avoid visiting in late June to August.

Noto Completely rebuilt after an earthquake in 1693, Noto is a generous source of delightful southern Baroque and a listed UNESCO world heritage site. Much of this town is constructed from limestone, which has been restored from the ravages of pollution, and now most buildings are a lovely yellow-white in color. Noto deserves a visit just to wonder at the architectural details but, there are also some excellent eateries here, offering traditional Sicilian delights.

Modica –

Baroque Town dotted along two sides of a narrow valley It’s well worth climbing to the top of the nearly 200 steps as they wind their way through the upper town (Módica Alta), zigzagging along narrow cobbled streets, past closely-built houses and bold bougainvillea, under Baroque balconies and through little hidden squares. The walk also rewards tourists with vistas of the lower town and houses on the opposite side of the valley.
