Letter from the Editor

ow! It feels like it’s been a while since I wrote an Editor’s letter! Almost two weeks in fact. I hope everyone had a fantastic time celebrating Eid. I headed off to Oman for a spot of camping in the wadi and I have to say it was truly amazing. Sometimes, I get so caught up in the daily grind that I forget the natural beauty this region has to offer. So it was great to get back to nature and do a spot of star gazing in an amazing location, and all of this less than an hour from Al Ain; the perfect way to relax after a busy week! And what a busy bunch we’ve been at The Source towers these past few weeks. Having listened to what our readers have to tell us, we’ve decided to turn the spotlight of the magazine even stronger on our garden city. Often, there are so many events, sporting activities, parties and get-togethers going on in Al Ain that we just don’t have time to get to everything in the span of a week. So, after a lot of thought, we’ve decided to start publishing The Source every second week, giving us time to get out there and find out a lot more about things going on in Al Ain!

QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE!
An English housewife spent 5 years of her childhood living with a colony of capuchin monkeys in Columbia after being abandoned by captors! Her Tarzan-like story saw her learn to catch rabbits and birds with only her bare hands and will be told for the first time in a book and TV documentary!
A month has passed but nothing has she Instead of the obdurate people that she can see Every eve she spends with nature her time Waiting for them cause she hasn’t done any crime What’s her mistake if she was born such? Why did they leave her in this people’s bunch? She is waiting with a hope of them to come To give her love and affection some But when will the day come Tell me when will the day come!!!

HCT Open First Charity Shop The Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) Al Ain Women’s Campus opened their first charity shop last week. The idea behind the initiative came from Ms. Zainub Al Hussaini, a teacher on the Community Service Learning Program, who aims to promote the concept of recycling items among students, to encourage community service among students and to support local and international charities. Ms. Al Hussaini commented “I’ve always been interested in doing charitable work and a couple of years ago we did a charity bazaar and the money we raised went to the children’s waiting areas at Al Jimi Hospital and the year after to the disabled center. I approached the director Mr. Tim Smith with the idea of opening a charity shop that’s going to be here forever.”
Community Service Learning Program students collected a variety of items from students and staff to be sold at the shop. Aysha Mohamed Obaid Al Baloushi enthusiastically told us “We’ve learnt from the course how to help laborers and people in need; to collect the objects that people don’t use, sell them for a low price and collect the money earned to distribute to the needy people.” All proceeds from the charity shop will go towards local and international charities including Al Ain Private Center for Care and Rehabilitation, cancer patients abroad, Tawam Breast Cancer Appeal, the UAE Camp for Syrian Refugees in Jordan and the HCT Sri Lanka Appeal. At present, the charity shop is open to staff and students from HCT but there are plans in the future to open to the general public.
Al Ain Student takes Top Award The Zayed Future Energy Prize, a distinguished award for innovation in renewable energy and sustainability, has selected the creation of Omar Al Nafea, a 14-year-old-student from Al Dhafra Private School in Al Ain to represent the new Global High School Prize Category.
Students get in the pink The Pink Polo Campus Tour visited the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) Al Ain Women’s Campus as part of their Breast Cancer Awareness Week activities. Students and faculty members got in the spirit by donning pink and posing beside a bright pink Mercedes-Benz! Pink Polo founder, Carrie McNeill, said the event was “founded as a new and fun way of spreading breast awareness in the UAE. We came up with the idea of touring 10 campuses around the UAE and including students in different activities that can help us in reaching out to a large group of people over a short period of time.” Besides the Pink Polo campus tour, the college conducted many other activities including photography sessions, henna and tattoo art work and the selling of pink ribbons and hand-made hair accessories. Oasis Hospital also visited the campus to speak with the students about breast cancer examinations, the importance of a healthy diet and exercise that is vital in fighting the disease. 10

sports Al Ain Shine in Cross Country Challenge Almost 350 athletes from 16 clubs across the UAE participated in the opening round of the UAE Cross Country Run in Dubai last week. Athletes from Al Ain Sports Club dominated the rankings in various races.
Al Ain Victory Spells Disaster for Dibba Al Ain stormed to victory with a 5-1 thrashing of Dibba Al Fujairah in a result that saw them climb to second place in the Etisalat Pro-League table. The game also saw Dibba’s Brazilian coach, Marcelo Cabo, become the second pro-league coach to be fired this season. The Ainawi’s were out to impress and striker Kembo Ekoko grabbed the first goal after only 5 minutes of play. The pressure was constant with Ekoko narrowly missing a second and Alex Brosque firing very close to the target from the 10 yard line. Striker Asamoah Gyan doubled the score line, picking up a Mohammed Salem cross and sending it past the keeper with an impressive header in the 38th minute and, a few minutes later, Brosque finally found
the target before Gyan got back in on the action with a second goal just 4 minutes before halftime. The second half began in the same vein with Brosque etching his name on the score sheet again after an impressive one-two between himself and Gyan. Dibba Al Fujairah were not as dejected as they might have been as Al Ain’s Salem handed them a consolation goal after fouling Alexander, picking up a red card and allowing him the chance to grab a goal with the awarded penalty kick. Coach Cosmin Olaroiu was happy with the three points. Meanwhile, Dibba are now in the hands of Emirati Abdullah Misfir, the former UAE national coach.
Al Ain FC held to a draw
Al Ain were stopped in their tracks to the top of the Etisalat Pro-League table this week after Al Jazira fought back to hold the Ainawi’s to a 2-all draw.
Al Ain got off to a great start with Asamoah Gyan scoring the first just before half time. The second half saw Jires Kembo Ekoko make it 2 for the visitors. Al Jazira weren’t
about to give up and Abdulla Mousa pulled a goal back giving the homeside hope. Ricardo Oliveira scored in 73rd minute to equalize and see the points split between the teams. The next match will see Al Ain take on Al Wasl at the Tahnoun bin Mohammed Stadium on Saturday November 3 at 8pm.
Starting in the Group A seniors 8km race, Saif Hamad came in first followed by teammates Khalifa Hareb and Obaid Mohammad. In the youth 6km category, it was Yousuf Obaid who took first place while teammate Mansour Khalfan Shekali finished in third. In the junior 4km race, Hamdan Mohammed Ali, also from Al Ain, finished ahead of the pack. “The idea behind such cross country running races is to increase the endurance of the athletes,” stated Ahmed Al Kamali, President of the UAE Athletics Federation and IAAF member. “It has been a great start to the season and hopefully these runners will keep the momentum going as the season progresses,” he concluded.
Amblers off to a Great Start The Al Ain Amblers are off to a great start after grabbing a win over the Dubai Hurricanes II last week in the Garden City. It was a close game with only 7 points separating the two teams at the final whistle and the Amblers taking the win with a score of 2922. This result sees the Amblers move to fourth place in the league with a game in hand over the Dubai Hurricanes who currently top the table. The next match will take place on Friday November 2nd when Al Ain will take on the Jebel Ali Dragons II. If you’re interested in joining the team, training takes place every Monday and Wednesday, 7pm at AESGC.

The Abstract of Time By Hayley Skirka

hen it comes to watches, pretty much everything has been seen before. Whether it’s a timepiece that’s waterproof to 100m, one that glows in ten different colors, a watch for tracking your pulse rate or one that has your name lazered on it, you name it you can probably find it. With this in mind, the people at Suck.co.uk decided to make things simple. They took the basic watch concept and constructed it out of plain paper. Their reasoning? Why try to design something for you when you could design exactly what you want yourself! The end result is pretty swanky! The Paper Watch is a digital watch made out of tear-resistant paper style material that you can design whatever way you like. Draw on it with markers, colored pencils or felt-tip pens or get your brushes out and start painting. Paint it your favorite footy team colors, draw your dream car on it or cover it in doodles and give it to a mate! You could even cover it in ‘thoughtful’ memories or sayings and give it to your other half, women love things that have ‘thought’ written all over them and this is one present where you can literally do just that! Granted, it’s not designer, doesn’t have laser beams coming out of it and you can’t wear it while clowning around in the pool. But, it does have a long-life battery, an adjustable strap and is a blank canvas just waiting for your mastery! On top of that, once you’re done doodling it’s a definite one-of-a-kind!

orget pulling rabbits out of a hat, or captivating the audience by slicing a beautiful assistant in half. The UAE has a dynamic Emirati illusionist, Moein Al Bastaki who performs mindboggling tricks and mesmerizes audiences with bedazzling feats of magic. This is a story of an illusionist whose tricks are so fresh they turn world wrestling champions into giggling children. He has made the Burj Khalifa miraculously disappear, attempted a death-defying trick and been known to make people vanish. His shows are outrageous; he swallows needles and a piece of thread and pulls out the needles hanging on the thread from his mouth and, to celebrate the 41st UAE National Day, he will carry the UAE flag while levitating in front of spectators in Dubai and on the Abu Dhabi Corniche. We had the privilege of speaking to the charming Moein Al Bastaki whose performances have gained immense popularity both in the UAE and internationally over a considerably short period of time. Moein’s passion for magic and illusion dates back all the way to when he was the tender age of 6. His grandfather caught his imagination with a simple coin trick, “he took a coin and started biting on it and when he took it out from his mouth it was half bitten. In my mind that was wow! I thought his teeth were really strong. So what he did is he took the half bitten coin, shook it for a few seconds and then it came back to the full coin.” This experience stuck with him and Moein’s interest in magic grew. Aside from his grandfather, he became intrigued with David Copperfield who turned out to be a huge influence on the young Moein. When Moein graduated from high school he told his dad that 16

he would like to continue on the path of magic. His dad wasn’t overly supportive, slapping him and telling him to “go continue your studying.” Moein decided he should obey and began to work while continuing his studies at Dubai University. After graduating he went to Australia to complete his MA in Business Administration.
While on the subject of glitches, Moein spoke about two performances that didn’t quite go as planned. The first concerned his prediction of a card choice which turned out to be way off and the second was a bit scarier, he put his assistant under hypnosis to levitate him but something went wrong and the poor man fell to the floor. Moein explained that, no matter how unsettling these incidences can be, they shouldn’t be something to knock a performer’s confidence. Instead, people should learn from them and “have the confidence to do something stronger and give importance to what went wrong.” Moein’s skills seem to go beyond his magical abilities as the young man tells us how he’s been nominated for Mr. Dubai 2012, a contest that recognizes personality, talent and wit. With his elegant charm, exceptional talent and sophisticated sense of humor I can see exactly why Moein has been selected.
Education is an important tenet for Moein who believes his father was correct. Speaking to parents with kids who have magical ambitions he advises, “You should help them be a good magician and also make them do their studies because studying is the basis to what they are going to achieve in life.”
Moein now has the best of both worlds. He’s a banker by day and an illusionist by night but his path to success was not without obstacles. In Islam, magic is considered taboo and Moein was initially unsure as to how his family and friends would react to him appearing in public and performing magic. He was strangely surprised by their encouragement and with the reaction from the public, who loved his unique performances. His aim now is to change people’s perceptions about magic and let them know that his illusions are merely tricks, a lot of fun and have nothing to do with black magic. Moein’s skills are self-taught. Extensive reading, practice and numerous live and television performances have enhanced his skill, creativity and self-confidence. Most of the ideas he comes up with alone but he also works with people who are experts in magic from all across Europe. Laughing, he tells me, “currently I work with different people from different parts of the world to create something new but I also come up with my own tricks while I’m driving; I think of an idea and work on it.” Although fame and glory is something many illusionists receive, for Moein that’s not what it’s all about. His performances are about magical moments and they require hours of practice and the consistent endeavors of a good team. His team, comprised of eight members, work hard to ensure that each performance goes without a hitch or a glitch.
As our discussion came to an end, I asked Moein for a few life lessons to share with our readers...
LIFELESSONS • Education is very important. • If you can stand in public and mesmerize unknown people then you can master anything in the world. • Never forget your family and friends because they will always be there to help you grow. The Source

Healthy Eating At School By Barbara Cremer
bars, or home-made muffins (which could of course be shared with the teacher!. Ok, so your child had a healthy breakfast of cereal and you sent him or her off to school with a granola bar, that should last him for the day, right? Wrong! Children use much more energy in a shorter period of time than adults, a fact I’m sure you’re aware of if you’ve ever watched children playing. So the breakfast and granola bar should contain enough energy to keep your child going to about midday, by which time they’ll start to lose focus and energy, hence why kids who are in school all day have a lunch break around this time. As a parent I know that my children absolutely love getting things like crisps, chocolate bars, cupcakes and other yummy treats in their lunchbox. However, these things do not contain any nutritional value and will not fuel their energy tank to sustain them for the rest of the day. Lunch boxes should definitely contain fruit and vegetables since most children do not eat the recommended five servings a day. Avoid sandwich fillings like peanut butter and Nutella, instead opt for something more nutritional such as chicken mayo, cheese and lettuce, or tuna. Popcorn is something enjoyable and healthy to pop inside lunchboxes instead of crisps.
“B
reakfast is the most important meal of the day!” How many times have I heard this statement from nutritionists, dieticians and other health professionals, and yet as I teacher I am shocked to say that many children are still sent to school without an adequate breakfast, nor with a nutritious packed snack or lunch. Food is not an educational issue, you may say, so why has healthy eating become such a huge campaign in schools worldwide? Well, there is a direct link between the food your children eat and how they perform academically. Children who come to school without having had a nutritious breakfast are starting the day without the necessary energy resources to focus and engage in their early morning learning. I would compare this to trying to get to work in your car when your petrol tank is very close to empty; your car will be sluggish, not able to go at any reasonable speed, and eventually stop completely when there is nothing left in the tank. Many schools realize that some children have to get up very early in the morning to get to school on time and as such often do not have the time to eat a substantial breakfast; as such an early morning snack break is intended to allow children to “fill up their tanks” so to speak. This early morning snack should consist of something which will give the children an instant energy boost while still being healthy and nutritious – good examples are yoghurt, fruit, granola and cereal 18

Living in the UAE, we are all aware of the importance of drinking enough water during the day, and this should be your child’s main drink at school as it satisfies thirst without containing sugar. Should you wish to send fruit juice just make sure it’s 100 per cent fruit juice, as many of these are actually nothing more than sugar water with a few tablespoons of fruit juice thrown in for flavor. While little research has been done to scientifically prove the relationship between healthy eating habits and academic achievement, a study conducted in Nova Scotia, Canada, looked at over 5000 year 5 students and their parents and concluded that children with decreased overall diet quality were significantly more likely to perform poorly in school, than those with improved diet quality. As a parent who takes her children’s academic progress seriously, this is enough proof for me to get started on packing more nutritious snacks for my kids when I send them off to school.

ometimes things can get a bit monotonous in a classroom. Students sit in the same places, and the teacher uses the same old teaching method, day after day. BORING RIGHT? Well, with a little bit of courage and spunk, any teacher can shake things up! All it takes is doing something a little bit out of the ordinary. Here are a few fun ideas that can spark some excitement, and brighten any school day. l BRING IN AN UNUSUAL PLANT: A healthy green plant can make any classroom a warmer learning environment. The more unusual the plant, the more entertaining it can be. l PLAY SOME MUSIC DURING CLASS: Try playing soft symphony music during a writing assignment or a silent reading period. You may be quite surprised with the reaction you get from your students. l USE A HAND PUPPET AS A TEACHER’S ASSISTANT: Have some fun and teach an entire lesson with your new puppetassistant. Be sure to give it some personality, like a name, some hair and maybe a high pitched voice. Tell the students that questions that day must be directed to your new assistant. You can even give your new assistant a desk and some paperwork to do. The more you act it out, the more the kids will play along. l CHANGE YOUR ROUTINE: Do something different. ANYTHING different. Change the side of the room in which you teach. Wear some mirrored-sunglasses during the lesson. Change your name and make the students use that name. The possibilities are endless. l SURPRISE THEM WITH SOME TREATS: l
FRUIT-IN-THE-BOTTOM YOGURT CUPS - Put some fruit in the bottom of a small cup. Put a healthy topping of yogurt mixed with low-sugar jam on it. Kids will love them.
l
ORANGES AND DATES – Slice some oranges or clementines and serve with pieces of cut-up dates. They have some sugar, but it is completely natural!
l
PLATES OF SEASONAL UNUSUAL FRUITS - Bring in trays of some unusual fruits like lychees, rambutans, or finger bananas. You will need to give the students a bit of instructions on how to open them, but it will fun. Keep
news New Homes For Displaced Teachers The 194 Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) teachers and their families who were recently displaced after a section of Abu Dhabi’s Khalifa City, Al Rayyana residential complex collapsed will be relocated to alternative accommodation over the next two weeks. ADEC, in collaboration with real estate developer Sorouh, are securing suitable accommodation for all affected staff and their dependents. Mr. Salem Al Sayeri, Executive Director of Support Services Sector at ADEC commented “ADEC realizes the inconvenience caused since the unfortunate incident at the Al Rayyana and for that reason ADEC has helped secure refined and suitable housing in a timely manner for all its teachers and their dependence who are all pleased with the selection of their new residence.” To avoid unnecessary delays, ADEC has sent concise guidelines regarding the moving process to help teachers prepare for each stage.
Teachers To Become More Effective
Over 50 middle leaders and senior teachers across private schools in the Abu Dhabi emirate attended a two day “Teacher Effectiveness Enhancement Program” (TEEP) which was delivered by Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT) in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Education Council’s (ADEC) School Improvement Division. This was the first time the program had been delivered to private school leaders and senior teachers who were briefed on how the teacher can influence the quality of teaching and learning in a classroom through four TEEP frameworks: classroom climate, interactive teaching, classroom management and a variety of teaching and learning styles. Engineer Hamad Al Dhaheri, ADEC’s Private School and Quality Assurance Executive Director, commented “If we are trying to improve the quality of teaching and learning in our schools, we have to provide a certain amount of foundational requirements, that is why we provided middle and senior leaders with additional support and training in areas that can help improve the schools overall performance level.” Participants are expected to provide fours hours of training to a minimum of 20 of their colleagues. Two trained middle leaders are also expected to collaborate and train another school’s middle leader or group of leaders. Participants on the TEEP program are also required to compile a report outlining key skills acquired during the course, strategies for applying new knowledge in their own schools and suggestions of ways to measuring the impact of work in the classroom.

business
T
he Business Dictionary defines business etiquette as “expected behaviors and expectations for individual actions within society, group, or class.” In a place of business, it involves treating coworkers and employer with respect and courtesy in a way that creates a pleasant work environment for everyone.
MANNERS
When it comes to business, proper etiquette is pertinent because a single mistake can cost you money or destroy potential business relationships. Here are few tips for basic business etiquettes you are likely to encounter during your work day. The basics The very basics of business etiquette are good posture, a firm handshake, strong eye contact, a friendly smile and the ability to make small talk. Repeating a person’s name when you are introduced shows the other person you’re interested and listening. Always introduce a lower-ranking person to a higher-ranking person. In most professional circles, avoid using first names; instead use Mr. or Ms. unless instructed otherwise. Watch and learn If you are new to the business world, observe the interactions of your managers or supervisors with colleagues and clients. While these models may not always be perfect, observation will allow you to understand the business climate and culture and learn from those around you. At meetings, sit or stand when the group or individual does, maintain good posture and pay attention to the speaker. If
MOM NEVER TAUGHT YOU! you’re actively involved in the meeting, arrive on time and come prepared. Punctuality Always be on time for work, meetings and after breaks. If you are late or will be absent, call with as much advance notice. Don’t leave messages on the answering machine. If your job situation accepts, ask a colleague to cover your shift or duties if you’ve planned a leave of absence and let your manager know of the arrangement. Dress for success Taking the time to groom yourself shows that you take yourself and your job seriously. Dress to the level of your colleagues and clients or slightly above. Coming to work with uncombed hair or wrinkled clothing shows that you don’t take pride in yourself and people may think this will be reflected in your work. If you’re attending a workrelated social event, take the time to find out the correct dress code and avoid gaudy jewelry and strong perfumes. Proper etiquette It’s also important that you’re clued up on the proper business etiquette for the country of your potential client; this can be key to closing a successful deal. By following respected business etiquette traditions, you will effectively demonstrate your own intellect and class, proving to your employers and colleagues that you’re worthy and deserving of their attention and respect.

The Secret to Happy Relationships By Khudayja Saloojee
A
s a little girl my mum always read classic fairytales to me which promised the idyllic happy ever after. Today, we’re constantly bombarded with romantic films echoing similar sentiments and yet, in reality, love isn’t about being whisked away by a knight in shining armor. Instead, it’s about finding someone who loves you unconditionally, without agenda or intention.
LEARN FROM ARGUMENTS It’s normal and expected that arguments will happen. The trick is to resolve them with respect. The strongest predictor of divorce is contempt. As humans, during arguments we often become irrational and have a tendency to say things we ‘don’t really mean’. This can harm relationships so try to stay calm during disagreements or, if that’s not possible, take a time out to calm down.
A good relationship generally involves two people who respect and communicate with one another, share equal rights, opportunities and responsibilities. All couples want to have a rewarding and successful relationship but we have to realize that, as a couple, it’s normal to have ups and downs. The challenge lies in finding ways to experience the ups much more than the downs. So, how do you keep your relationship healthy and happy?
HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY Be responsible for your actions. If you make a mistake, own up to it sooner rather than later and always do it completely. It allows easier healing because neither of you have given the problem time to fester and grow.
COMMUNICATE Men and women are programmed differently so its important to communicate your needs to one another. If you have something to bring up, do it gently. Going on an attack rarely gets results. It’s also pertinent to listen to each other and let your partner know that you’ve heard what they said before you give them a response. MAKE YOUR RELATIONSHIP MEANINGFUL Work as a couple to create something rewarding that will add depth to and give your relationship a sense of higher purpose. SPEND TIME TOGETHER Give priority to spending quality time with each other. Reserve at least half an hour a night, one evening a week and an entire day per month when the two of you spend time exclusively together. Without quality time, you can’t have a quality relationship. CREATE A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT Relationships cannot thrive in negative environments. If both of you develop a negative outlook on then you’ll both struggle to find emotional or physical comfort. DON’T LEAVE ISSUES UNSETTLED If you talk don’t talk about things that happen, chances are the problem will be exacerbated further and this can be damaging to your relationship. Bring things up as they happen or soon after and talk about the little things that bother you before they turn into big things! 24

BE SUPPORTIVE Try not to blame, judge or criticize each other. Remind yourself that you’re a team, and in order for the team to be successful, you have to be supportive of each other. COMPROMISE A good relationship is built on compromise and a great deal of give and take on both sides. Remember everyone is different. We have to accept and value differences in each other and often, we choose people who have qualities and abilities that we would like more of. This is one of the reasons why our relationships offer us significant opportunities to grow and develop. BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR YOUR COMMITMENTS When you make a promise, keep it. Not remaining faithful to your word destroys trust necessary for relationships to thrive. PAY ATTENTION Demonstrate your commitment to the relationship. Recognizing one another and letting someone know you love them and they have added to your life is one of the greatest compliments you can give. ENJOY YOURSELF It’s important to try new things as a couple. Let your relationship grow and adapt as you both change. Remember to have fun and celebrate life together.

Kayaking in the Mangroves
I
By Mel Craven
magine floating away from the hot pavements and crowded city streets to another world, where time sits still. Where the only things you hear are the splish-splashing of oars skimming across the cool blue water, and birdcalls filtering through the warm breeze. Believe it or not, you can experience this amazing back to nature experience in the very heart of Abu Dhabi! The Nokhada Adventure Company are an eco-tour group offering low impact mangrove tours to visitors and residents alike. Their trips have a gentle pace and the guides are educational, good fun and entirely down to earth. No experience is necessary and all equipment is provided. All you have to do is bring a hat, some sunscreen and a camera! We began our tour in an unlikely spot, close to the Grand Mosque underneath a huge highway! However, it wasn’t long before we found ourselves in the middle of a ‘Lord of the Rings’ style enchanted mangrove forest. Low grey twisted branches tied in knots, little red tree crabs scuttling up trunks, darting silvery fish glinting in the sunlight and, in the distance, elegant pink flamingos enticed us to continue our exploratory adventure. As the forest is tidal, at certain points we had to disembark and pull our kayaks along sandy banks, or duck and weave through leafy tunnels, however, this only added to the mystique and the feeling of having escaped the desert and endless cement structures of the city. I felt a little sad as the guide explained how fragile the mangrove ecosystem is and the devastating effect that drenching and development is having upon the existence of some species. Mangroves grow where salt water meets the land and provide vital ecosystem functions. The forests serve as nurseries for a variety of fish and other marine species and act as buffers against erosion while having the ability to store large amounts of carbon from the atmosphere. As the sun began to set on the horizon we turned back towards the distant bank and our parked cars. It was only as I climbed out of the water that I began to notice the tiredness creep in to my limbs. While paddling I had felt so alive, happy and free. Who knew that kayaking could be so refreshing and good for the soul? If you have more time you can opt to go on an overnight kayaking camping trip or partake in some kayaking followed by moonlight yoga, a combination known as Kayoga! Now that is something I would definitely like to try! To arrange your own kayaking escape contact the Noukhada Adventure Company on 02 650 3600 or www.noukhada.ae Al Wagan Road, P.O. THE ITALIAN JOB By Farid Nouisser
I
n this issue we have some very exciting news to share with our readers. The Source has expanded its horizons to Italy and in the months to come we will be sharing the details with our loyal fans in Al Ain and the UAE. You may be asking yourselves “How is this possible for a local magazine?” Yes, we are local but it would be foolish in this day and age not to think globally. The world with its exploding technology and sophisticated media has become a very small place and I am sure you are all familiar with the expression “act locally but think globally”. The Source is taking a bold step and not only thinking globally but initiating action.
the enthusiasm and warm welcome we received, that we decided to establish a field office in the city of Bologna to better coordinate our Italian campaign. Our first campaign stop was Rimini where we were honored to sponsor and be a media partner with AIRED (Air Excellence Design). The show was named ‘Forma E Architettura Del Volo – Shape and Architecture of Flight’. A very special thanks to Luigi Sani and Sandra A. Arizabalo for conceiving AIRED and its matching show AIRET (Air Excellence Technologies).
Our starting point of choice is Bella Italia. Why Italy? Well, Italy is the closest European country to the Arab world and shares many common interests and values with its second largest Middle Eastern trade partner. In fact the UAE and Italy have enjoyed a 27per-cent trade growth in the first six months of 2012 alone and things are still on a steady climb. There is, of course, another reason of great importance that brought us to Italy and that is our dear friend Arturo Ansaloni and his cousin Fabrizio. The Ansaloni Group boasts generations of solid business sense and diplomacy in the Bologna region of Italy and Arturo has done an incredible job of connecting The Source with a fantastic network of Italian companies. Like The Ansaloni Group, these enterprises find the UAE to be a refreshing new marketplace away from the gloomy European economic climate. In mid-September we were invited to Italy to meet with Italian companies eager to venture into the UAE We were so intrigued by 26

Over 100 companies and more than 200 design professionals were on hand to wow the aeronautical industry with examples of some of the best production items, new materials, innovative projects and product reviews. There was a large focus on the future of airports and their overall design and functionality. The Source was there to interact with the many exhibitors like Arturo Vittori and Andreas Vogler of Architecture and Vision. This international and multidisciplinary architectural and design team is deeply engaged with the development of innovative solutions and technology transfer between various platforms of aerospace and terrestrial applications. The company Architecture and Vision reflects the belief that architecture needs a vision of the future to produce long lasting and impactful cultural contributions. We were so impressed by their green technology vision and pursuit of positive global change that we plan on featuring more of these designs in the issues to come. I am certain our readers will agree that, not only do these concepts make a lot of sense, but that change has become a necessity if we wish to sustain our planet. To cap off this wonderful event the exhibitors and the general public were treated to an extraordinary air show featuring the Italian aeronautical acrobatic team. The weather was perfect, the air show spectacular and we bid farewell to one of Italy’s most vibrant touristic cities and continued our journey. We shared The Source with many more interested candidates throughout various regions of Italy and, in the months to come, will be bringing our stories and friends to the UAE to enjoy the hospitality and warmth that the country has to offer.
We’re excited to be chosen as the effective media connection to boost trade cooperation between Al Ain and Italy and look forward to being ‘the source’ of some fantastic success stories. Benvenuti and Marhaba! The Source

HOROSOPE
review
NOVEMBER By Manish Subramanniya Warrier
ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 20) Even though it will be hard, think twice before splashing out on anything new. Make a list of priorities and budget accordingly. If you’re feeling like something isn’t right, then take action. TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21) Work’s going to be stressful and you may find yourself putting in extra time or effort to survive but it will all be worth it as there is a promotion or a sign of recognition in the works. You have loads of energy this month and, for singletons, there is a chance of love towards the end of the month.
ALEX
CROSS is an action-thriller about Detective Cross and his investigation of a series of gruesome murders, carried out by psycho-path serial killer Picasso who insists on inflicting horrendous pain and torture on his victims. Cross gets close to catching ‘Picasso’ who takes it personally and begins to target the detective’s family, pushing Cross to the brink of his moral and physical limits.
GEMINI (May 22-June 21) Things look good at the start of the month and you may even find yourself getting an unexpected pay rise or bonus at work. Any Gemini’s looking to move abroad should send their applications off now. Relationships will need a bit of attention as your partner’s mood goes through a series of highs and lows. Be patient. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 23) Money has been tight the past few months but thankfully things look set to improve from November onwards. A chance meeting, with an old friend or colleague, may be the key to something wonderful. LEO (Jul 24-Aug 23) Opportunity knocks, but keep your goals realistic as it’s what takes place on the sidelines that throws the most interesting light on your aims and objectives. Soon, you’ll have every opportunity to develop your career and reap the fruits of your hard work. A new chapter is about to open, so do your best to get everything in place. VIRGO (Aug 24-Sept 23) November is a good month for studies and exams so if you’ve been thinking of taking that driving test or have another exam to sit now would be a good time. Be careful when it comes to your friends as a lack of communication may lead to a misunderstanding. Don’t rush into any big decisions.
SUDOKU
HARD 3
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) You may face some minor health problems this month but nothing to worry too much about. A career move or transfer looks likely and, when it comes to relationships, you’re through the worst of a stormy time and things look plain sailing for the next month.
7
PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) Wow, you are busy this month! With work taking up a lot of your time, try hard not to let family or friends feel neglected. If you have kids, they may give you a bit of cause for concern this month but just use your sharp mind and perseverance to get to the root of the problem.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22- Jan 20) You’re in demand when it comes to socializing so choose who you want to hang out with and keep your company varied. When it comes to careers, you’re in a stronger position than you think, so don’t be over-modest about your abilities and talents. AQUARIUS ( Jan 21-Feb 19) This month sees great career developments however, be cautious about making any big decisions mid-month. Try to work with others or in a team to see the best results. You’re feeling a little biased towards certain friends at the moment, remember to step back and see the big picture.
7 5
LIBRA (Sept 24-Oct 23) This month you have luck on your side. You’re also starting to realize that money isn’t everything and that bigger isn’t always better. Don’t be surprised if you get an offer you can’t refuse but think carefully on it before making any decisions. Be wary of your health, you could have a few problems if you continue to over exert yourself. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22) You may find you’re a bit down in the dumps and don’t have your usual self confidence this month. The best solution is to adopt a healthier lifestyle, hit the gym, go walking and be mindful of what you eat. Ups and downs will be frequent in your relationship and you should try to keep a good balance between work and family.
