id-ul-Fitr is upon us once again, marking the end of the Holy month of Ramadan. The heightened festivities are the welcome and well deserved fruit that reward and nourish the spirits of Muslims around the globe after a month of sacrifice and humility designed to remind the fortunate of what is most often taken for granted. We fast, to remember the people who cannot eat and drink daily. We fast to feel their suffering and to remind ourselves how blessed we are to have daily food and water.

We fast to feel the same hunger pangs that our less fortunate brothers and sisters feel daily around the globe. We fast to encourage generosity, to practice self discipline and ultimately become better Muslims and human beings. At The Source, we would like to express our gratitude for the many readers and sponsors that have helped make us Al Ain’s premiere community magazine.

O Ramadan…! A time for our hearts to become unsealed, Reflecting on the divine words revealed. The month which we hope to never end, Unable to count the infinite blessings it sends!

Wacky World

LIVING SHAH JAHAN

Asked by our Lord to give up our worldly pleasures, So that we may receive His divine treasures. It’s a time that comes but once a year, Yet the moments which we hold most dear! The nights spent in prayer and reflection, Prepares the soul for redemption. Praying to our Creator for mercy and wisdom, Pleading to be admitted into His kingdom. We welcome you, O Ramadan, with joy as our guest, Having to subdue our egos as a test. You mend our hearts and give us tranquility, As we engage in battling our iniquity! Solidifying the bonds of kith and kin, Washing away the stain of sin. Fasting not only of body but of speech, It is Your benevolence which we beseech! O Ramadan, you have blessed us with your presence, Teaching us to grow from our spiritual adolescence. Continue to be the month which will always bless, Helping us to alleviate our fears and distress Poem by: Musa Burki

Faizul Hasan Kadari, a former postmaster living in the rural Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh state of India is building a monument of love for his late wife - a copy of the Taj Mahal (the white marble mausoleum, built in 1631 by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife Mumtaz Mahal) in his garden. The 77 year old grieving husband has used up his life savings to build the miniature 50ft by 50ft version of the iconic structure in memory of his wife Tajammuli Begum. He embarked on the project after promising his wife, who was childless, on her deathbed that he would create something that she would be remembered by. So far he has spent AED58,879 of his life savings, sold off family heirlooms and raided his pension to build the structure. He is struggling to complete the job due to a lack of money but refuses to take donations as he wants to prove his devotion to his wife, who died in December 2011. Like the original, Mr. Kadari's version also houses the body of his late wife but it is made from red sandstone.

ENVIRONMENT

THE IMPORTANCE OF REUSING YOUR WASTE Through advances in recycling technology, there are more options to recycle and reuse different materials, which helps in conserving as much of our resources as possible. Recycling steel or tin can save at least 75% of the energy it would take to create steel from raw materials but metal is one of the few materials that doesn’t get down cycled in the recycling process. That means, unlike plastic, metal doesn’t lose quality in the recycling process. Once metal makes it to the recycling center, it can to be processed into a new metallic product. So our job is to ensure that the metal products we use at home, don’t end up in the trash can, but at the recycle center where they can be re-used. 8

CONGRATULATIONS!

Zayed Humanitarian Day

Ramadan 19 which coincides with the ninth anniversary of the late HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan's (may Allah rest his soul in peace) death, has been named Zayed Humanitarian Day. Remembering the humanitarian leader and celebrating his philanthropic initiatives, the Al Ain Residency and Foreign Affairs Department has expressed its gratitude to HH Sheikh, who has installed the spirit of giving and upheld the principles of benevolence. The event was hosted in line with the initiative named “Love and Loyalty to Zayed”, launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. Hiba Hassan, Etihad Account Manager alongside Farid Nouisser Managing Director of The Source, presented the free winning passenger ticket to Kuala Lumpur to Qudama Al Zubaidi. The response for this competition was phenomenal and we would like to thank our readers for their enthusiastic participation. We would also like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to Ethihad for their generous contribution and wish Mr. Al Zubaidi a bon voyage as he embarks on his exciting trip!

Brigadier General Maktoum Al Sharifi, Director of the Capital Police Directorate described begging as unacceptable behavior that the government is combating resolutely. He also highlighted the efforts of the special teams set up at all police stations to protect community members from swindlers. “Begging paves the way for crimes, as beggars roam residential areas to stake out houses with a view to rob them. Many robberies have been carried out by beggars who had received alms from the targeted houses”, explained Brigadier General Al Sharifi. He also urged citizens and residents not to allow beggars into their homes and to refrain from sympathizing with them, regardless of their methods.

THE CLEANING LADY During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions until I read the last one: "What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?" Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the Cleaning woman several times. She was tall, Dark-haired and in her 50's, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade. "Absolutely,” said the professor. "In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say "hello . . .” I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned that her Name was Dorothy.

TWO NICKELS AND FIVE PENNIES In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, A 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and Sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him. "How much is an ice cream sundae?" He asked. "Fifty cents," replied the waitress. The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it. "Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?" he inquired. By now more people were waiting for a table and the Waitress was growing impatient. . "Thirty-five cents," she brusquely replied. The little boy again counted his coins. "I'll have the plain ice cream," he said.

The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away the boy finished the ice Cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies. You see, he couldn't have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.

GIVING ALL Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare & serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes I'll do it if it will save her." As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheek. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "Will I die right away, or how soon?" The boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he would have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her.

Eid Mubarak and may the lessons you have learned during the past month of sacrifice be planted permanently in your heart and soul and continue to shine throughout the entire year and for the duration of your life here on earth… The Source

urban woman The best eye shadow combination will be two or three shades that blend well together. Etdal is a mother of 3 living in Al Ain. She keeps up to date on the latest trends in beauty, fashion and health. She looks forward to sharing her knowledge and hopes to inspire you to feel fabulous and look your best!

Makeup

Tips & Tricks By Etdal Abougouche

Many women want to highlight the color of their eyes and just don't know how to do it. The truth is that many times finding the right shade of makeup can make all the difference. Brown eyes, blue eyes, green eyes, or hazel eyes, all have makeup styles that can make them really "pop" out. Choosing the right eye shadow for your eye color: IF YOU HAVE BLUE EYES Blue eyes are best enhanced by pale golds, browns, browngrays, warm bronzes and purple shades, all of which can be used to create a smoky eye effect for all skin types.

The "smoky eye" works with any eye color. Remember, some colors that are supposed to look great on you may not. You need to experiment to find what works for you. These tips are just a little push in the right direction. HOW TO WEAR RED LIPSTICK: Skin tone, not hair color, should determine which red lipstick looks the best on you. The newest crops of red lipsticks are sheer, which makes them easy to work with and a must for every woman's makeup bag. The modern woman should think of red lips as the beauty equivalent of the LBD (little black dress). For a fresh, youthful take on the red lips trend, apply foundation on your lips, line your lips with a red liner and carefully apply the lipstick. Be patient when you are shopping for the perfect shade of red for your face; it takes time to find it! DIY TINTED MOISTURIZER You don’t have to spend a fortune on a tinted moisturizer you can do it yourself by following this simple rule: Mix a pea sized amount of your foundation mixed with a pea sized amount of your moisturizer or sunscreen. Tinted moisturizer and foundation go on the same way.

Avoid too much pink as it will make your eyes look redder.

IF YOU HAVE GREEN EYES Green eyes look amazing with yellow-toned beiges, dark greens and greys. For a more glam look, go for rich violets and purples. You can also try metallic colors, like silver, across your eyelid and the inner corner of your eyes for a more dramatic look.

IF YOU HAVE BROWN EYES Most eye shadows look fabulous when applied, but top choices are dark browns and khakis. Intense blue colors also make brown eyes pop out.

THE 5 MINUTE FACE Here is a quick and easy way to look fabulous when time is of the essence! Step 1: On a freshly cleansed face, apply your tinted moisturizer to look instantly refreshed. Step 2: Use concealer under your eyes and on any spots that need covering. Step 3: Apply face powder with a clean blush brush.

GENERAL TIPS FOR ALL EYE COLORS For blush and lip color choose neutral shades. This will keep the focus on your eyes. With the more natural look you will also appear clean and beautiful. 16

The Source

Step 4: Apply one coat of mascara on your upper lashes. If you have a bit more time, line the lower rims of your eyelids with a white eye liner to instantly brighten up your eyes. Step 5: Apply your lipstick, lip gloss or lip balm.

Life Lessons Every Dad Should Teach

T

“Being a great father is like shaving. No matter how good you shaved today, you have to do it again tomorrow.” - REED MARKHAM By Yussif Abdu Salam

hanks to my dad for the life lessons he taught me. Although I wasn't always the best student I was always listening to what he was trying to teach me and my siblings. Here are 10 life lessons that my dad tried to teach all of his kids – some of us took his advice better than others.

Money does not define us. You can make it in life, regardless of how much money you make. It’s called financial freedom and anyone can obtain it. Be responsible and committed and your money will never go to waste. Quitting is hard. When I was eight years old, I wanted to quit football so my dad told me, “Sure, but you have to tell your teammates and coach.” I couldn’t do it. I continued playing for seven more years. Showing kids the pain of quitting will deter them from making and taking these decisions lightly. If your kid complains that a school project is too hard and that he wants to give up, tell him that’s okay, as long as he informs his teacher that he’s quitting and will take whatever mark is appropriate. Trust me, he’ll stick it out. Other people’s feelings matter. It’s easier to connect with others if you understand their perspective, so nurture that instinct in your child. Don’t be afraid to fail. Take risks in life and don’t let the fear of failing stop you from trying. Don't be afraid to get your heart broken; you only have one life, so take some chances.

Competition leads to self-assurance. Children as young as four start to compete with their parents – sprinting to the car, wrestling on the couch. Let them win a lot, and then slowly ramp it up so they have to work harder for their victories. Always give 100 percent in all that you do. In life, giving 100 percent may mean the difference between getting a promotion or losing your job. When you give 100 percent, you're more likely to maintain strong relationships with everyone that mattersw to you. Most important of all, when you give 100 percent in all that you do, you can be proud of yourself. A strong sense of self-worth will be yours for life. Learn from your mistakes. Kids often learn best from making mistakes and suffering the consequences of their actions. Don’t do things out of order. Decisions we make in life can have huge consequences . There are 4 major things you will do in your life: • Go to college and get an education. • Establish your career. • Get married. • Have kids. Follow these in order and your life will seem simple and you will struggle less. Do these out of order and you might find yourself in some very difficult situations. Live within your means. We have become a plastic society, racking up way too much debt as families and as a nation. Living within your means allows you to save for the future. Hard work brings luck. Sometimes we attribute other people’s good fortune to luck. I am sure that is true in some cases, but the real way to achieve good fortune is to make your own luck. Combine hard work with passion and you will find a job you really love; one that will support you and your family and excite you to turn off that alarm clock in the morning. Life does not give handouts and kids will learn this very quickly.

candid meeting I had with an Emirati woman at her local Al Ain farm, added great meaning to American author Diane Mariechild’s simple words, “A woman is the full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture and transform”.

Thuraya Bakhit Ali Abudullah Al Ketbi got married at the tender age of fifteen to an Omani gentleman and moved to Oman, where she became a mother to seven beautiful children. She was living a blessed and fulfilled life until her husband suddenly passed away due to medical complications and things took a tragic turn. Recalling the difficult times, Thuraya went on to talk about her return to Al Ain where her children were denied the Emirati citizenship, because their father was a foreign citizen. “With the help of my own father, who lived in Al Ain, I managed to get a small stand alone tin house called Sanadaka, in the Mezyad area. Summers were extremely hot and winters were tremendously cold so living in the tin compartment was awfully uncomfortable and difficult, but we coped. Fortunately, about 10 years ago by the grace of Allah Almighty, and the generous help of the government and higher officials, my children were granted the UAE nationality and we finally moved to a new and more suitable home.” Raising seven children as a widow with no financial support was the biggest obstacle of my 20

Rashid Al Ketbi life. Merit to my eldest son Rashid, who was my pillar of strength; I raised my children to become responsible and respectful adults. Second to Allah Almighty, Rashid has been with me through the best and worst of times. Rashed was only 13 years old when his father passed away, but although he was very young he understood the burden on his shoulders and became like a father figure to his siblings. He was and still remains my right hand man”. With no education or alternative financial option, Thuraya took over the family farm to provide for her children. “Rashid and I worked day and night in hope of living a better life. My son sacrificed his own studies and worked with me on the farm to help offer his siblings a brighter future - I couldn’t have made it without Rashid.” Thuraya explains, and continues to praise Rashid who is now a father of four and serving in the UAE military whilst continuing his education. Adding to the stress of being a single mother, her youngest child Saeed was deaf and had severe behavioral issues. “Saeed was the most difficult child to deal with. He lost his ability to speak and hear when he was two years old, and he became very stubborn and irritable. He would try jumping out of moving cars and would throw tantrums pleading for things that I couldn’t afford to give him. But Alhumdillah, things have changed and he is currently studying abroad in America which gives me great pride as a mother”. During our conversation Thuraya served Kahwa (Arabic coffee) and freshly grown dates from her farm, where she still spends most of her time. “I visit my farm twice a day and continue to work side by side with the hired help. We have camels, sheep, goats, cows and chickens that keep us busy on a daily basis. I love being actively involved and find great pleasure and peace being at my farm,” explained Thuraya.

Rashid and I worked day and night in hope of living a better life. My son sacrificed his own studies and worked with me on the farm to help offer his siblings a brighter future - I couldn’t have made it without Rashid become very irresponsible by focusing far too much on ridiculous things like Blackberry’s. Women from my time did everything on their own: we raised our own children, cleaned our own homes, helped our husbands, we did it all, on our own, without hired help. We were social and hospitable with neighbors, family and friends. We worked incredibly hard yet we never complained. We were exceptionally patient, content and grateful for the simplest things that we were granted in life”. The loving and caring grandmother of 17 grandchildren is a true example of a supermom and is a great role model for the contemporary mothers of today. She was enthusiastic to share some words of wisdom which helped her cope with some of the most trying times in her life.

Life Lessons

• Don’t rely on others to make things happen. • There is no one better to teach children proper etiquette and the difference between right and wrong than their parents. So be active in your children’s lives and lead by example. • The best things in life cannot be purchased; they are granted through your own good deeds.

“When we first started out, I didn’t have any hired help; I did everything on my own. I took care of the animals, planted the crops, setup the water pumps and managed all the household chores. It’s hard to break old habits, so I still do as much as I can (given my age) on my own including housework.” explained the proud owner of the 5 million dirham famous racing camel, Abu Sukhun. But camels and farming were not all we talked about during my visit with Thuraya. I asked her how she views today’s young women and how they compare to the women of her era. “Today’s young ladies go to school or to work, return home, have lunch and hideaway in their rooms. They have become entirely reliant on housemaids and expect them to do everything for them. They are oblivious to what is happening in their homes, families, neighborhoods and have

You have to Spend Money to

MAKE MONEY

A

T R U E O R FA L S E ? By Flo Joe

hard lesson I’ve learned as a business owner is that you need to spend some money to make money. You need to take calculated risks with your business in order to see it grow and pay you even more money down the road.

The bottom line is this; while I understand that every dollar you don’t spend goes into your pocket as a small business owner, if your goal is to attracted new customers, you need to spend a little to make a little more. As you scale that up and spend more, you should be making more and more money. Don’t be afraid to spend money on quality investments in your business, as the results down the road should more than pay off and help continue to grow your business. Too many business owners spend too little on marketing, thinking that not spending is the same as saving. This is not correct. The old saying, “You’ve got to spend money to make money,” is true in this case. Your success is determined by how well you market–that is, how well you are able to build relationships and engage with your prospects and clients. Now, I am not saying that you have to spend a lot. In fact, your main asset as a business owner is your creativity. Business owners need to find unique ways to maximize their creativity so that they leverage l i m i t e d marketing budgets. And let’s face it, all businesses, no matter their size, place limits on their marketing budgets. Those that do well are able to use their creativity to figure out ways to market their goods and services to

their prospects and clients. Thinking you can do it all and do it well with no money is unrealistic. If you aren’t willing to spend money on a website, marketing, education etc, how do you think your business is going to survive? There is something in business called “Return on Investment” (ROI) and it’s a term you should get used to thinking about often. Let’s say you spend AED375 on an advertisement and received 3 clients from that advertisement at AED275 per hair appointment. Of the 3 hair appointments you’ve provided you made AED825. You spent AED375 on the ad so deduct that from the AED825 and you actually made AED450. And that is just on those 3 hair appointments. Suppose 2 of those clients come to see you once a month on average at AED275 per hair appointment. That right there is AED550 per month on top of the AED300 you already made in the beginning from your advertisement. If those 2 clients continue to see you each once a month you have made nearly AED7350 in one year from the AED375 ad. Had you not spent the money and placed the ad, you would never have seen these clients and would never have made the money earned since that time. And that’s not even counting the money you made from possible referrals from those new clients. Do you see the importance of investing? Investing in your business is something you have to be willing to do if you are going to make it as an entrepreneur. I know it can be hard at first, but I promise you that the more you are willing to invest in your business, the more successful you are going to be. If you can let go of the power money has over you, investing it into your business will be so much easier. All successful businesses have a budget allotted towards different expenses within the business. Do you think they stress out every time they have to spend money on their website fees or advertising fees? Of course not! They’ve most likely already sat down and figured out what their budget will be for each expense in their business. Throughout the years my expenses have changed within their respective categories, but one thing has always remained the same; I have ALWAYS been willing to invest money so that my business will continue to thrive and grow.

Emirati Women in the UAE

T

hroughout the history of the region, women have been a vital part of society. In the past, the men of this region would leave for up to four months to work in the pearl and fish industries, leaving the women responsible for looking after the family’s agricultural needs and raising children. This was not an easy task in the desert´s harsh landscape and women were respected for their ability to work in such difficult conditions.

on the 8th of February 1973. In 1975, the First Lady went on to unite all the women's organisations in the UAE as the UAE Women's Federation. The UAE Women's Federation is an autonomous body with its own budget and planning. Its priority in the early days of the UAE was to promote education amongst women. Now that this goal has been met, the Federation focuses on comprehensive social planning, including the role of women in the workplace.

Throughout time, the role of women in the UAE has grown in line with the country's development. Since the commencement of the Federation, the Supreme Council members have been committed to improving women´s lives.

UAE women have taken advantage of the educational opportunities available after the discovery of oil. More and more women are continuing on to higher education. The majority of students at UAE University and the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) are women. Besides the traditional fields of education and health, there are many women graduates working in various disciplines such as engineering, science, media and communications, computer technology, law, commerce, and the oil industry.

As the late President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan said, "Nothing could delight me more than to see the woman taking up her distinctive position in society. Nothing should hinder her progress. Like men, women deserve the right to occupy high positions according to their capabilities and qualifications." The right of UAE women to take part in the development of all areas of their society is laid out in the UAE Constitution, adopted when the federation was founded in 1971. It states that social justice should apply to all and that, before the law, women are equal to men. They enjoy the same legal status, claim to titles and access to education. They have the right to practice the profession of their choice. Moreover, in accordance with the Islamic principles upon which the Constitution is based, women are guaranteed the right to inherit property. Although women had these rights before the unification of the emirates, the Constitution reinforced them in legal terms applied throughout the country. In order to implement the late Sheikh Zayed's vision of a modern society based on Arab and Islamic traditions, his wife Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak has worked tirelessly to promote the role of women since the creation of the Federation. She founded the first women's society in the country, the Abu Dhabi Women's Society, 26

Illiteracy, which affected up to 85 percent of UAE women at the outset of the federation, had fallen to 7.6 percent by 2005, with female participation at elementary and middle schools equaling that of their male counterparts. In subsequent years, national women have surpassed UAE men and now account for 56.3 percent of students at schools and 70.8 percent of students attending university.

The percentage of female employees participating in the workforce quadrupled between 1980 and 1990, with the total number of national females working in all fields reaching 100,000 by 2010. There is a women's corps within the Armed Forces, and a women's military training college has been established in Abu Dhabi, bearing the name of one the great heroines of Arab history, Khawla bint Al Azwar. The women of the UAE are actively involved in their country's development. The UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, said, "Arab women are half our community and are sometimes better than men. Perhaps in the past she has lagged behind, but today she is growing to better heights in our society and is able to achieve goals within our communities. She will only grow." Detoxify Your Body

I By Nadia Hussain

n the modern world we live in, toxins and chemicals are all around us. In our drinking water, in the air that we breathe, in the food we eat, in our beauty products and even in our furniture. Even if you try to eat organic food, use organic beauty products and make your own laundry detergent, toxins are unavoidable, simply because they are everywhere.

Detoxification is all about resting, cleaning and nourishing your body from the inside out. It eliminates toxins from the body and adds healthy nutrients instead. There are so many benefits such as weight loss, better skin, fewer digestive issues, reduction of general aches and pains, increased energy and disease prevention. Detoxification has been around for centuries and practiced by a variety of cultures and ancient healing systems. In today’s toxic rich environment, the need to detoxify is even more important than ever especially for those who may suffer from unexplained fatigue, slow bowels, skin issues and allergies. A diet that is specifically intended to rid the body of toxins is referred to as a detox, or cleansing diet. This is usually a diet rich in natural foods and one which avoids processed or hard to digest foods such as fatty meats, ghee, and rich dairy products. Other than body detox, there are colon cleanses, liver and gallbladder cleanses and master cleanses, which incorporate all of the above. Most body detox diets have severe food limitations which can make the diet restrictive in nature. It's for this very reason that you should not embark upon a detox diet without the guidance of a medical practitioner. Many people think of detoxification as something we only need to do to get rid of unusual or excess toxins in the body, but the truth is, we do it all the time. Every time you exhale, every time you urinate or move your bowels, you’re detoxing, because the wastes you eliminate and the air you exhale include many of those molecules that your body is trying to get rid of. The liver, kidneys, spleen, and

28

Our bodies are naturally built to detoxify us. Every day, we eliminate and neutralize toxins through our colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph, and skin. It’s just that, in this day and age, these organs often get over-worked from the constant barrage of toxins from pollution, animal products, and processed foods. When our natural detoxification system is not working at its best, toxins accumulate and can lead to damage. So when our built-in detox systems get bogged down and start falling behind on their work, the results can be ugly and eventually, even deadly. That’s why the best approach to supporting your body’s natural detox systems is an ongoing one. By taking a few simple, daily steps, you can help scrub each of your body’s major elimination systems and enable them to function more efficiently. This empowers your body’s immune and repair systems to do the work they were meant to do; keeping you healthy, vital and resilient, even in the face of unpredictable challenges. Some gradual, sustainable lifestyle shifts that promote detoxification from the inside out are: 1. Initial step is to reduce your toxic load. Eliminate coffee, refined sugar, saturated fats and cigarettes from your diet. 2. Eat plenty of fibre, including brown rice and organicallygrown fresh fruits and vegetables. Beets, radishes, artichokes, cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower are excellent detoxifying foods. 3. Cleanse and protect the liver by taking herbs and drinking green tea. 4. Take vitamin C, which helps the body produce glutathione, a liver compound that drives away toxins 5. Drink at least two quarts of water daily. 6. Breathe deeply to allow oxygen to circulate more completely through your system. 7. Transform stress by emphasizing positive emotions. 8. Sweat in a sauna so your body can eliminate wastes through perspiration. 9. Dry-brush your skin or try detox foot spas/foot baths to remove toxins through your pores. Special brushes are available at natural products stores. 10. Exercise at least one hour a day.

Celebrate Eid at Green Mubazzarah By Mehak Alam

Like every year, picnic spots will witness traditional festivity on Eid holidays, as people try to make the best of their time and enjoy visiting recreational spots and parks with family and friends. One picnic spot in the garden city of Al Ain that you will always find crowded during Eid, is the ever popular Green Mubazzarah, located at the base of Jebel Hafeet. Parking spaces at Green Mubazzarah are always occupied, and long queues of vehicles are seen anxiously waiting to find a place to park. So make sure you leave home early, to avoid traffic chaos. Once you parked your car, your next move should always be to find a good spot to sit and enjoy the rest of the day. If you are a swimming fan, you can always visit the swimming pool area (separate for men and women) or simply soak your feet in the hot water springs. In case you are accompanied by kids, then you definitely must take them to the playing areas with swings, jungle-gyms, and slides. A man-made boat lake that operates only until sunset, mini-trains, camel and pony rides, will keep the entire family busy. You may also come across a few budget-friendly stall-holders selling snacks, tea (Karak) and soft drinks in addition to the fast-food outlets conveniently located around the park. If you love to BBQ and eat homemade food away from home, then the specifically located BBQ sections are where you have to be. A beautiful Sheesha spot is another popular attraction. Don’t forget to watch the traditional Emirati dance performances that add a local entertainment flavour to the scene. The first two days of Eid are family days and bachelors are not allowed to enter until 8:30pm.

my world So huge they’re traversed by ocean-going tankers, North America’s Great Lakes offer spectacular beauty and recreational opportunities galore.

O

ne of the things I was looking forward to about our trip to the US last summer was revisiting all our favourite lakes in Minnesota. We lived in Minneapolis for nearly five years, before moving to Dubai, and I loved the fact that, despite being more than a thousand miles from either coast, Minnesota is virtually a seaboard state, thanks to Lake Superior, which connects to the Atlantic via the St Lawrence Seaway.

seaport city of Duluth. Queuing up beside the vessel (bobbing about in surprisingly choppy water, and that was just the harbour), I was astonished to see women in floaty, chiffon dresses and heels with smartly dressed partners. They were led to the lower deck for a more slap-up meal, while the pizza eaters were herded to the busy, upper decks for a floating, soggy-pizza buffet. The sunset cruise was wonderful, though – as was the rest of Minnesota.

The name Minnesota is a Sioux word meaning “land of sky-tinted water” and with 15,000 smaller lakes dotting the landscape, 95 per cent of Minnesotans live within 10 minutes of a body of water.

Located on the Canada-US border, the Great Lakes represent the largest expanse of fresh water in the world. The region, which is the size of continental Europe, encompasses eight US states (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin), as well as the Canadian province of Ontario. If you’re really eager to squeeze in as much as possible, it’s also a holiday that can be combined with a stay in New York City or Toronto.

Shortly after our arrival, however, I realised that our sons – who were too young to remember anything about our time living in the US – hadn’t quite grasped the concept of a scenic lake surrounded by nature with no belly-dancing fountains on it. “Another lake?” my older son would ask, letting out a sigh as long as the Mississippi. “Is it indoors or outdoors?” his brother piped up once. I was greatly relieved when, after a few days, they started to appreciate the natural beauty surrounding us, especially once they discovered they could kayak, ride pedalos and learn to fish. And they were definitely won over by Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes, which, for personal reasons, is one of my favourite spots on Earth. MOTHER SUPERIOR: To call Lake Superior a lake is the biggest under-statement there is. Rather like calling the Burj Khalifa a high-rise, or the Himalayas a series of hills. A body of water that measures nearly 350 miles from tip to tip and has 350 shipwrecks, tempestuous storms and numerous lighthouses, is to me – an English girl at heart – far more than a lake. The three quadrillion gallons it contains would cover all of Canada, the US, Mexico and South America with one foot of water. Seriously impressive, for a lake.

Known for its breathtaking wilderness, tumbling streams and hiking, canoeing and fishing opportunities, the state hosts Voyageurs National Park, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, 66 state parks, 58 state forests and two national forests – every corner of which is smiled on by Mother Nature. TOURING THE LAKES: We had so much to do in Minnesota we didn’t venture any further, but if you’re flying to this region from the UAE you can certainly turn your trip into a Great Lakes tour and see a few more states.

The Great Lakes began to form some 10,000 years ago at the end of the last glacial period, when retreating ice sheets carved basins into the land that were then filled with meltwater. Along with Lake Superior, there’s Lakes Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario, which together are sometimes referred to as the North Coast or Third Coast by some US citizens. Dairy farms and fruit orchards can be found in abundance, meaning there’s no shortage of fresh pie and ice cream for hungry travellers, while the lakes themselves offer beaches, islands, dunes, resort towns and scenic lighthouse-dotted vistas. Should you tire of these wondrous inland seas and fancy an urban pace, there are numerous cities to visit too, including the region’s largest Chicago, perched on the shores of Lake Michigan and known for its magnificent skyline; Milwaukee; the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul; Detroit; Indianapolis, Columbus and Cleveland - all unique and with varied historical and cultural backdrops.

Having taken a little jaunt up Minnesota’s beautiful, craggy North Shore by car and train, we decided to experience the vastness of the lake by boat. A ‘pizza boat’ to be precise, leaving from the The Source

I spend my free time either playing video games on my iPad or swimming. Over the weekend you can find me playing in the malls, shopping with my mom or playing with my dad and my younger brother. I try to keep things organized, clean and tidy. I would like to be a professional swimmer one day!

Book Review

Infinity and Me, is about a young girl Uma who can’t help feeling small when she looks up at the night sky where she sees infinite stars. Along with her family and friends she ponders the concept of infinity. Is infinity a number that grows forever? Is it an endless racetrack? Could infinity be in an ice cream cone? Uma soon finds that the way to think about this big idea may just be . . . Infinite.
