I’ve got post-vacation blues, work is busier than ever before – which is really a blessing, so don’t pay any attention to my rants – my nanny deserted us, I have a mysterious skin rash that is sure to land me in a leper colony and to top things off, my soon to be 4 year old son, is about to start his first day of KG-1, and yours truly has the heart-wrenching task of sending him to the lions – at least that’s where he thinks he’s going. Sound familiar? God I hope not; but if so, please call me so we can commiserate!

Oh, in case you were wondering, I can’t do anything about the traffic and as for the nanny; I’m an awesome baby sitter with pretty reasonable rates! Welcome back to the grind Al Ain but know that we feel your pain and will be with you along every step of the way to help make living in this town all that it should be – ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!

SLEEPING ALL THE WHILE!

A woman in New Zealand drove for hundreds of kilometers while asleep at the wheel. She was also found texting from her mobile phone along the way. After five hours on the road, she was finally found slumped over the wheel of her car, with no recollection of her sleepy sojourn. According to her close friend the woman was high on sleep medication before leaving in her car. The same woman was caught sleep-driving 10 months ago, and police had already ordered patrol cars to keep a lookout for her silver hatchback and began tracking her via her mobile phone, as soon as they received a call from her friend. The woman kept sending texts as she was driving from her Hamilton home to the beachside town of Mount Maunganui, covering a distance of almost 200 kilometers.

Washing dishes uses water, energy, chemicals, as well as your valuable time, so an efficient approach can save a lot of each. Many people utilize a dishwasher to help them keep up with household chores – but these machines use up a lot of water and energy. By taking simple steps like switching off the drying feature on your dishwasher and letting the dishes dry by either opening the door or by letting them sit over night to dry, can significantly reduce the amount of energy used.

2) Don’t spend too much time on one question. Each question is worth the same number of points. If a question is taking too much time, move on. CAREER GUIDANCE

If you’re hoping to study in the USA, you are probably planning to take the SAT test next month. A good SAT result is a necessity for college admission; an excellent SAT score may help you qualify for scholarships. Here are some of our favourite tips to help you succeed: 1) Dress in layers or take a sweater. It’s a long exam and the rooms can be cold. You need to be comfortable to do your best.

3) A lot of people worry about spelling or grammar, but your essay structure is more important. Have an introduction, a conclusion and provide examples in the middle that support your argument. 4) Understand the order of difficulty. The questions get harder as you go through each section. Obvious choices early in a set are often right, but later in a set they may be a trap. 5) Don’t guess randomly. Eliminate the choices

you know are wrong and then make an educated guess from the remaining options. If you can eliminate even one answer it still pays to guess on the SAT. If you can’t eliminate at least one wrong choice, leave the question blank. If you have other exam prep questions you’d like us to answer, email careerguidance@ consultfocalpoint.com. Reminder! SAT registration deadline is September 6th for the October test and October 3rd for the November test. Major transformational initiatives in ADEC schools With the roll out of the New School Model (NSM) to Grade 6 (Cycle 2) in the new academic year, the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) has introduced major transformational initiatives across Kindergarten (KG) to Grade 6 this academic year. New textbooks will be introduced for Science and English language across KG to Grade 5, as per highest international standards, and with more focus on the UAE culture, heritage and national identity. English language textbooks, with the participation of an international foundation known for writing English language books as a second language, will also be introduced. Each of these books will be accompanied by textbooks, a teacher’s and parent’s guide as well as a digital component. Arabic language teachers will be given guidebooks and digital paper resources to help support their teaching methods in classrooms. “Teachers will be equipped with the best pedagogical practices and strategies to

help deliver effective teaching methods to students. “In efforts to help encourage teachers to read and research as much as possible, ADEC has provided KG to Grade 5 teachers with more than 50,000 digital components (stories, resources) in addition to textbooks that they can access electronically from their school or homes. Grade 6 teachers also have access to this electronic service (digital, paper resources and manipulatives)”, stated Dr. Karima Al Mazroui, ADEC’s Curriculum Division Manager. In addition, major changes will be included across 102 Grade 6 schools across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. A new subject called Integrated Social Studies will be taught for the first time as part of the curriculum changes to include History, Geography, Social Studies, National Education, Economics, Psychology, Sociology and Career Guidance. Integrated Social Studies has been specially, designed to help strengthen students cultural and national identity while guiding them towards a bright future career path.

Al Ain’s shelterless bus stops The Department of Transport (DoT) announced building 120 air-conditioned bus stops in the garden city of Al Ain. The plan falls under the department’s Surface Transport Master Plan (STMP). Under this plan, the department intends to install 360 air-conditioned bus shelters across Abu Dhabi Island, Abu Dhabi’s suburbs, Al Ain City, Al Ain’s suburbs and the Western Region, at a cost of approximately AED100 million. The bus shelters will be in three sizes to meet the needs of various passengers across the emirate, according to the Department. The sizzling summer heat tests people’s stamina in Al Ain when it comes to catching a bus or taking a taxi at the city’s mostly shelterless bus and taxi stops. Around 95% of the city’s bus and taxi stops are shelterless. A fleet of around 200 buses has been serving the public with a comprehensive network of routes covering the entire Eastern Region. 10

he summer has come to an end and if you are like me, right about now you’re feeling sorry for yourself and filled with a gripping anxiety as you head back to work wondering why you feel more exhausted than you did before you left for your summer vacation. A European study found that 23% of vacationers noticed no difference in how rested they were when they returned from their time away; an astounding 17% actually reported feeling worse! This is likely why you hear so many people grumble about needing a vacation to recover after their vacation. How to Overcome the Post Vacation Blues Almost everyone who enjoys traveling is subject to what is commonly known as the post vacation blues, a type of stressed or blue mood that can affect you in the period after returning from a long-awaited vacation. Having to get back into the routine of work, school, and daily life in general can be a source of distress, disorientation and discomfort as you feel you just can't settle back in. Indeed, for some people, post-vacation blues can result in a feeling that you no longer want to keep doing what you're doing and all you can think about is making an enormous change in your life.

14

The Source

feature While it may be unpleasant, the post-vacation blues can be overcome with a little determination and a focus on accepting what the vacation gave you and how valuable your everyday life is. This article provides several tips on making that happen. Recognize the symptoms. Some vacationers don't have a problem easing back into their everyday routines following a long and pleasurable trip, but many others do, and it isn't uncommon. Some signs that you may be suffering from what is clinically known as post-travel depression (PTD) include: • • • • • • •

Tiredness or restlessness, perhaps nervous energy that distracts you from focusing on any single thing Loss of appetite or perhaps even an increase in appetite Sadness, tears and feeling blue Strong feelings of nostalgia Inability to settle down and do your usual tasks Anger might be a possibility for some, especially if the vacation was supposed to resolve issues that remain outstanding In some cases, depression; if you suspect you're depressed, see your doctor immediately.

Realize that your vacation doesn't necessarily end here. If you went away and experienced different cultures, pace of life, scenery, food, etc., then you've opened up new doors in your life. You have been touched by possibilities that weren't a part of your life before and it's vital to keep this aspect of your vacation well and truly alive. Think about how your vacation experience can inform good small changes in your life. A large part of the post-vacation blues derives from a desire to change everything about your life because you feel so fed up or bored with how things are back in your "ordinary" life. It would be a mistake to try and cover up all the experiences of your vacation and just blindly push yourself back into the daily grind. Instead, find the things that really stood out for you in terms of routines that you'd like to incorporate more of into your regular life. Share your experiences with a friend or family member. As soon as you find the time once you've unpacked, you might find it helpful to recount your travel experiences with someone, or post any thoughts about the trip, interesting stories, funny mishaps, etc., using social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter. However, realize that people won't be as excited about your trip or experience as you are because they didn't have the same experiences as you and it's fairly hard to imagine another's vacation. However, while sharing with others, take care to realize that sympathy for post-vacation blues is fairly hard to come by, owing to the fact that most people focus on the fact that you actually had a vacation, not that you feel upset upon your return.

Start planning a return trip. The best way to overcome the post-vacation blues is to know you have another vacation to look forward to. If you're financially able, start looking for transportation, lodging, etc. early, as well as the least expensive ticket prices. At the very least, you can start saving and putting aside money every week toward the next vacation. It will soon add up and it's a great way to focus yourself when you're tempted to waste money on sugary treats or any other light vice that you can do without.

Simple tips for

ANTIAGING

W By Etdal Abougouche

ondering what you can do to look younger or slow down the aging process without plastic surgery? Here are some simple and effective antiaging tips to slow down the clock and help you age fabulously!

HANDS: Hands show the first signs of aging so it is important to take care of them. You can start by using ½ a cup of lemon juice mixed with 2-3 tablespoons of sugar in a bowl, which will make a paste. It feels amazing when you put it on your hands, the citric acid from the lemon helps aid to fade age spot on your hands and the sugar exfoliates and buffs away any dull and dry skin. It also works on your elbows and knees. BIOTIN: This vitamin helps promote healthy growth of your hair, skin and nails. It boasts your metabolism of carbohydrates and fats, which slow down in the aging process and basically kick starts your metabolism to start burning fat, which is always a great thing! QUIT SMOKING: For many health reasons you should quit smoking, obviously it causes cancer which alone should be the main reason to quit. But it also shows many signs of aging, such as yellow teeth, bad breath and wrinkles. It destroys collagen and elastin and decreases levels of estrogen, which are all necessary to keep your skin firm and young looking.

STAY HYDRATED: Drink plenty of water, at least 8 cups daily. It keeps skin hydrated and the more water you drink the better your wrinkles will look. So cut back on coffee and soda and you will notice a huge difference in your skin. SLEEP: The expression “I need my beauty rest” is actually TRUE! Your skin requires downtime to repair itself and with lack of sleep you can get dark circles, puffiness around your eyes and sagging skin, which are not fabulous. So start getting more of your beauty rest! GET MOVING: Exercise increases blood flow to the skin and gives you a glowing, healthy looking complexion. The even better news is that you only need 30 minutes four to five days a week to make a noticeable difference in your appearance. Get moving! OLIVE OIL: Rub Olive Oil in your hair to make it soft and shiny. After your shower apply about 2 tablespoons to your hair twice a week; it will help prevent your hair from looking weak and brittle. You should also trim your hair every 6 weeks to maintain healthy growth and keep it looking amazing!

stuff for men CHOOSING YOUR FABRIC: If this is your first suit, then stick with a light wool suit because it can be worn year-round and give you more” bang for your buck”. NUMBER OF BUTTONS: THREE-BUTTON SUIT: The three-button suit was very popular in the 90’s compared to the two-button conservative main stay, but the tables are turning again. Taller men may prefer the three-button jacket, which will reach higher on the chest and is more comfortable and flattering. TWO-BUTTON SUIT: The two-button suit is still the most popular choice. Today every major brand is designing two-button suits and making them more streamlined and modern. LAPEL: Avoid narrow and extra wide and keep it somewhere in the middle. Also consider whether you prefer a notched lapel, which is classic and always looks on point, or a more dramatic peaked version that is more avant-grade and chic. SINGLE OR DOUBLE-BREASTED:

Finding the perfect suit STEP 1: PURPOSE OF THE SUIT If you’re looking for something to wear to the office often, then keep it dark and classic. If you’re looking for a suit to wear to key special occasions, then black or navy is a safe bet. If you’re looking for your first suit, then a solid navy blue is always the most versatile choice, followed by charcoal and black. STEP 2: WHAT DO YOU WANT?

Do you know if you want one button, two buttons, or three buttons? Do you want a peak lapel? What kind of fabric and color do you want? Those are the many questions you should ask yourself when picking your suit. As there are many options available, familiarize yourself with the choices. 18

The Source

THE JACKET VENT: Double vents are more European and a bit more refined. They make it easier for you to reach into your pockets without having to fold your jacket up. But they’re the most expensive to make, so they’re going to be more exclusive than the centre vent. The centre vent is modern yet traditional; you cannot go wrong with this choice. There is also the vent-less jacket. This is the cleanest and dressiest in appearance, but is not very convenient. The wearer needs to bundle this type up to access his pockets. PLEATS ON PANTS, OR NO PLEATS ON PANTS: Menswear is moving further and further away from pleats, but they still exist in a more subtle fashion. It’s really more of a personal choice. Now, heavier men typically need pleated pants for comfort. The pant should taper each leg and the pleats will loosen with body movement. As a result, they can prove to be flattering but if you can, try to go for non-pleated. CUFFS:

Classically, if the pants have pleats, then cuffs are required. However for casual pants, like khakis, cuffs are not required. Cuffs really are better for taller guys because they tend to shorten the silhouette of the legs. STEP 3: ALTERATIONS/TAILOR Your tailor will eventually become your best friend. A good tailor can make small tweaks that will make the difference between exuding style and confidence and complete outfit failure. After choosing a suit that’s an exceptional fit, you will probably still need to take it to a tailor for some final touches. In menswear, it is all about the details, whether they are big or small.

I

t is often said that a great suit is like a suit of armour and it should be a requirement that every man have at least one stunning suit that they feel secure in.

The single breasted suit should always be your first pick for both work and play. The doublebreasted version is dashing and chic, but not for men on the shorter or heavier side, as it adds fabric to your midsection.

I

t is a fact that short films are an art form offering perspectives very different from those of big –ticket cinema films, and my interview with the 47 year old Emirati filmmaker, Saleh Al Shunnar, has further instilled my belief in this.

The aspiring Dubai-born filmmaker entered the limelight during the recently held Arab Film Studio 2013 Awards, an annual short film competition established in partnership with Image Nation and twofour54 that aims at giving aspiring talent the necessary tools to carve out a career in the film industry. He made it to the six finalists of thirteen contestants and was the last Emirati competing with a chance to win the AED50, 000 Best Film award. Although his short film Recycled didn’t bag the Best Film Award, it did manage to grab the Best Sound Design award at the end of an exciting competition. In a candid interview with The Source, the filmmaker spoke about his passion for film-making, the experience of participating in this thrilling competition, his future plans and much much more‌ Tell us something about your personal life? Saleh Al Shunnar: I have no filmy background at all. My mother was the first Emirati female doctor in the UAE and my father started the first private clinic in Dubai. I am blessed to be born into an intellectual family that exposed me to the real world and helped me to expand my horizons. Were you always interested in film-making? Saleh Al Shunnar: Not exactly filmmaking but

creativity has always interested me. One of the various expressions of creativity is filmmaking and I enjoy doing that very much. Where did the idea of film-making come from? Saleh Al Shunnar: Last year, while attending the discussion panel at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival, I worked alongside filmmakers from Image Nation. After the discussion was over, I was so inspired that I immediately enrolled in this year's course. What is your short film RECYCLED about? Saleh Al Shunnar: It is about a European director filming an historic film in the Arabian mountains. His scenes are constantly interrupted by litter and pollution. After several attempts to complete the film, he finally gives up and decides to shelf the film. However, his Emirati Assistant Director, who grew up in these mountains, takes the shot footage and edits it into a short movie, which he names “RECYCLED”. Why did you choose a serious social topic for your film? Saleh Al Shunnar: Lots of short movies are about social messages. I tend to gravitate toward stories that convey a message because it makes my work more meaningful. My future projects are also social message oriented. What were some of the challenges you faced while filming Recycled? Saleh Al Shunnar: Each movie has its own challenges. Recycled faced issues in finding suitable actors and a team that fit the allotted budget. We also faced non-compliant weather issues. You were one of the 6 finalists for the Arab Film Studio competition; how has this experience impacted your life? Saleh Al Shunnar: In my opinion, everyone that

made it through the training session and completed a film was a winner. The process has changed us all. We evolved during the course of the competition and I personally discovered a purity of enjoyment that I had never felt before. It was the perfect outlet for my creativity. The competition has helped me realize what my future holds for me. Your film bagged the Best Sound Design Award. How do you feel about it? Saleh Al Shunnar: More than the award, I cherish the experience gained during the course and the competition. The award was the icing on the cake. What do you think about the blooming film industry in the UAE? Saleh Al Shunnar: For the past few years now, filmmaking has been encouraged by government entities and some amazing work has been the result of talented local filmmakers. Filmmaking in the UAE is in its nascent beginnings and we hope to see more promising work in the future. Focusing on great scripts and finding financiers to invest in the filmmaking business is essential to our continued success. What are you working on right now? Saleh Al Shunnar: Post summer, I am planning to work on some more short movies and documentaries. My long term future plan however, is to eventually make a full length feature film.

GETTING YOUR CHILD Prepared For Preschool

A

djusting to preschool can be tough for any child, even one who's been in daycare for a while. You can help ease your child's transition to preschool with these ideas and activities.

Before school begins, visit the classroom together at least once, preferably when other children and their future teacher(s) are there.

The important thing is to keep any preparation time fun. At this age, learning should not be a chore. You don't want your child to feel like every activity is a lesson or every outing an educational field trip.

3. Come up with a good-bye ritual: If this is the first time your child will be away from you, there could be concern that you're not coming back, or that you'll get lost and won't be able to find your way back to the school to pick up at the end of the day.

These ideas, from preschool teachers will help prepare your child to listen, follow directions, and get along in a group — three important tips to help get your child off to a good start:

You can also read stories about starting school. Some good ones to try are Going to School, by Anne Civardi and Stephen Cartwright, Preschool Day Hooray! By Linda Leopold Strauss, and Maisy Goes to Preschool by Lucy Cousins.

Invent a special parting ritual — such as a high-five, or saying something like, "I'll be back to get you soon, long before we see the moon" — that you do each time you drop him off. During the first few days, allow extra time to get him ready and out the door in the morning, too. The more calm things are at home, the easier the separation will be.

1. Plan more social activities: All preschool children have to get along with other kids. If your child hasn't spent much time in a group with other children, then activities such as sharing, taking turns, and playing cooperatively can be very difficult.

And though you might be tempted to sneak out without so much as a wave when you drop off, don't do it. They will only be more distressed when they realizes you're gone.

Help your child get used to being part of a group by arranging play dates with one or two peers or enrolling him in a music or tumbling class.

Instead, make a point of saying good-bye. Don't drag it out or let on that you might be upset, too. Just do it matter-of-factly and confidently and they'll learn to do the same.

2. Give him a sense of what to expect: It's the rare child who isn't at least a little anxious about starting preschool. Resist the temptation to say things like "It'll be the most fun you've ever had," or "There's nothing to be afraid of," and never belittle your child's fears or concerns. Instead, help calm his fears with information.

Now, once you are out the door and out of sight, you can let your guard down and give into that heart wrenching pain that is most certain to overcome you when parting from your little ones. Just remember, it is actually much harder on the parent than the child and as difficult as it is to believe, they will get over the sorrow of parting much quicker than you.

Talk to your child about what to expect at school — where they'll be going, what they'll be doing, and who will be in class with them. 22

business

What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger “You don’t learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing and falling over.” – Richard Branson

Y

es, starting a business can be a lot like having a baby. It's one of the most tormenting things you can do in life, yet the rewards make the risk and responsibility worthwhile. Anyone can start a business, but how well prepared you are, is often directly correlated to how well it turns out.

Unfortunately, some clients will lie to you. They will tell you straight to your face they are interested, and actually want to work with you. This, most likely, is a lie. Why? Clients want access to your product for the cheapest price and will lead you on for months before they let you down with a “you’re just a little young for us but stay in touch”.

Care for it, nurture it, protect it, and it can be the most rewarding and fascinating experience of your life. Leave it alone for a minute, and-well; let's not think about what could happen to it out there in the cruel world.

It takes time and energy to find the right talent for the right job. The initial founding team helped prototype the concept and get an initial product onto the market. A full year into existence, my business now has a whole new team. It’s okay to have a fluid team if the product is moving forward. At some point stability will be found.

But like baby's first year, your first year in business can be a new and confusing time. It’s not easy to be the “new kid on the block,” as every startup is. The first thing to understand as a rookie – your peers, the media, investors and the rest of the industry will underestimate you. This is a fact of life and it was something new to me. But fortunately, I have no problem being the underdog. I would rather be doubted and exceed expectations than be heralded and ultimately disappoint. Starting a company is definitely one of the most challenging things you will ever do in your life. It’s especially difficult if you did not study at an Ivy League, graduate with an MBA, and come from a family of great wealth. No, my team and I have none of the above. Yet here we are a year later, still creating a great product. Be prepared to be challenged more than you ever have in your life. You will be challenged physically. You will be challenged mentally. You will also be challenged psychologically, more than you ever thought possible. You will also give up more than you ever imagined.

24

The Source

The way things tend to happen in a startup could be summarized by the words “controlled chaos”. People come and go. If your vision is stimulating enough, you will attract people that want to help out. Problems arise when people realize it will be harder work than originally thought, so some will split. At that moment, you will find out who is serious and who isn’t.

Just as building a great team takes time, building a great product takes time. You must be comfortable with timely, constant iteration and waiting patiently as your tests reveal valuable results. I am sure you are thinking to yourself about how crazy a picture the above paints. All in all, I am having the time of my life and I believe any start-up founder needs to be doing the same. Why on earth would you put yourself through such madness if you didn’t enjoy the process? Although I was just working hard on filling a niche in the market, through it all I have learned more about myself in the last year than in the past 20 years of my life. Deep down in the founding core of any company you will find a root motivation within every founder called personal discovery. They often don’t talk about the journey that they’re currently on, the one that takes them deeper into their psyche and will only make sense decades later. I find my current journey fascinating simply because most people don’t have the courage to dive this deep. I consider myself one of the lucky ones.

Being Shopaholics, my mom and I are always on the lookout for new shopping spots in the city. One fine morning when we had nothing else to do, mom suggested exploring one of the finest shopping places in the garden city of Al Ain. And here we go…! We set out on the best shopping extravaganza ever. We drove all the way to Al Jimi district, behind Al Ain Convention Center, to visit Souq Al Zaafarana, a place for people who love shopping and spending time outdoors. The place truly reflects the abundance of Emirati culture and tradition. From traditional Emirati dresses to souvenirs, incenses, spices, perfumes (Oud and Bakhoor), henna and other products, this is no less than a shopping paradise and to top it off, if you really excel in the art of bargaining, then this definitely is the right place for you. My mom enjoyed shopping in the Mubdia Village, a female exclusive section that is staffed by female shopkeepers, while I set out to explore the beautifully designed complex. The ambience is simple, open and spacious and ideal for window shopping. The new home of the city’s Old Souk, Souq Al Zaafarana is further extended into a fruit and vegetable market, butchery, handicrafts shop, and a plant shop on one side which was over-crowded and reminded me of the old Al Ain Souq. On my way back to where mom was, I even got a glimpse of the innumerable fast food joints that flaunted their delectable delights for the shoppers. I managed to pick crushers for myself and mom and on our way out of the Souq, we loaded up on Emirati dates purchased from an old Emirati shopkeeper, who allowed us to taste some of the best dates from around the country.

A better understanding of

ARAB VALUES

T

he Arab world works in a very different way than the Western world and a fundamental understanding of these differences is essential if one plans to live a comfortable and happy life as an Expat in the UAE. It is important to become well acquainted with the different values inherent with Arab culture, to insure positive interaction with the community.

Religion is taken much more seriously than it is in the West and it impacts almost all aspects of life. Islam is the primary religion and it has a direct influence on business customs, governmental rule and day-to-day life. The Quran is the main religious text of Islam, with Sharia or Islamic law influencing most Arab countries' laws and regulations. For example, the Sharia outlines several Arab world customs, including marriage, crime punishment and women's appearance and dress in public places. Each Arab country interprets Islamic law differently; some follow it very strictly, while others look at it more as a general set of guidelines. Despite these differences, Muslims in all Arab countries pray five times a day, and all other obligations and responsibilities are scheduled around the prayers. Most of the other values that people respect are based on those derived from the tenets of Islam. 28

The Source

The most important of all values to Arabs is family. This includes the entire extended family and not just the immediate family. In many Arab households several generations live together under one roof. The first obligation is to their families and this affects every aspect of their lives; everything else will take a back seat to family issues. Most Arab families believe that reputation, honor and respect are everything. In fact, if a person loses their honor or dignity, they are ruined in the eyes of their family and community. The elders are generally the most respected members in the family. It can be quite easy to accidently offend someone or even worse, damage their honor. This can create very serious consequences and should never be taken lightly. Arabs do not believe in criticizing people in public and doing so will sacrifice honor. Most Arabs consider privacy to be an important value and they rarely discuss personal family related problems. Family issues are expected to remain in the family and are not discussed with outsiders. You will find that most Arabs will not share very much personal information with you and for the most part, refrain from asking you to share your personal affairs. If a person does talk about another family member to an outsider, he will lose his honor and be frowned upon by the community. The Arab society is rich in heritage boasting centuries of colourful history, and living in this part of the world provides an incredible opportunity to benefit and learn from the cultural beauty of these unique and hospitable people.

Eating to beautify your

SKIN

I

f you struggle with dry skin, you may spend hours applying moisturizers. However, you may be surprised to learn that you can actually moisturize your skin from the inside out.

Most of us would like to have a radiant, glowing complexion and while a special skin routine can help, it is actually what we eat that makes our skin look the way it does. The right product or cream is not the answer for glowing skin. It is more than skin deep because our skin reflects our overall health. Really beautiful skin is more than just about skin. A healthy glow comes from a body full of healthy foods. Being beautiful from within the body is not a new idea but is often overlooked. If you give your body the attention it deserves, you will be well on your way to a glowing look. HERE ARE FOODS YOU CAN EAT TO HELP YOU ON YOUR WAY: To achieve dewy, hydrated skin, you need to make sure you're getting enough fluids throughout the day. Drinking water is the best way to keep your fluid levels up, but eating fluid-rich foods such as fruit, vegetables and soup can also help. Alcoholic and caffeinated drinks, on the other hand, actually cause you to lose fluids. Keeping your body hydrated not only improves your overall health, but it also helps your skin look younger and healthier. Water removes toxins in your system and helps your body retain important nutrients GET YOUR VITAMINS – fruits and vegetables are great sources of nutrients and vitamins. Eat vitamin A rich foods such as carrot, papaya and peaches. Vitamin C rich foods such as lemon, guava, and oranges help clear skin and give a fresh complexion. These help in collagen synthesis, which holds skin cells together and keeps skin elastic. Tomatoes are very rich in lycopene which is an antioxidant that protects skin from damage. Vitamin E, often found in tiny capsules at makeup counters, can be gotten from whole grains, cereals, nuts such as almonds and walnuts. Several vegetables such 30

as avocado are rich in different vitamins such as A, E and B plus being an antioxidant. Berries such as strawberries and blueberries are rich in vitamins and antioxidants. Fresh fruits, vegetables and juices, are directly absorbed through blood stream and keep you hydrated as well. GO GREEN – eat a diet rich in green foods. These are some of the best foods for the skin and yet are some of the least eaten. Foods such as salad leaves, sprouts, cabbage, and lettuce are good for skin because they contain chlorophyll. This has natural cleansing properties and fights harmful free radicals and is anti-inflammatory. BULK UP – on protein. Our skin and hair are rich in protein and if we get high quality protein in our bodies, it shows. Our skin, hair and nails are all rich in protein and require high-quality protein to function properly. Specifically, skin contains the proteins collagen and elastin. Without adequate protein, our skin can become pale, dull and age prematurely. Protein is also very important in helping our body repair itself and helps the body create antioxidant enzymes. KEEP IT SWEET – all chocolate is made of cacao beans or chocolate nut which contains flavanols that improve the blood flow to the skin and improve skin texture. Dark chocolate contains the most flavonoids and can be eaten regularly in small portions, unless medically unadvised. STAY HYDRATED – dehydration, or not getting enough water, makes the skin look dull, rough and older than it should be. Drink enough water and you will find your skin clear and glowing. CUT BACK – on fried greasy foods, junk foods full of preservatives and artificial colours, cakes, biscuits and so on. This doesn’t mean you have to forego these forever but make these into treats or eat smaller portions instead. Smoking also makes the skin look dull and giving up this habit is a must for inner and outer health! What you eat not only becomes a part of your inner self but is also part of the outer fabric of your body. The healthier your food is, the better it will reflect on your skin.

LONDON’S

E

GOLDEN GLOW

very summer, I travel to the UK with my children to reintroduce them to relatives, rain, greenery and wellies. Last year was particularly special because after the wettest period since Noah’s Ark, the country was basking in sunshine and the glow of its two-week Olympics success story.

Red pillar-boxes in the hometowns of Team GB’s athletes were repainted a shiny gold colour each time a gold medal was netted and, in the capital, it was as though they’d sacked the team that used to dab at the monuments with a cloth and had instead hired the world’s best stylists to preen the streets and fluff up the parks.

View of Camden Market, famous tourist attractions in Camden Town

Along with the mildly pushy Londoners who spill out onto the trains and buses like worker ants, there were thousands of smiling volunteers who won the Olympics the accolade of The Friendly Games. So marked was the shift in the usually reserved national mood that the impossible was achieved: commuters actually started talking to one another on the tube, buoyed up by the feel-good factor permeating Britain. On a trip to the big smoke, I meandered along Regent Street and found myself stopping not just to peer into the beautifully dressed Regent's street. Every building in Regent Street is protected as a Listed Building.

my world

“When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.” So said writer Samuel Johnson in 1777. More than two centuries later, visitors to the Olympic Isles found out why his words still ring true By

shop windows, but to take photos – something I wouldn’t have dreamt of doing years ago when I used to charge along this famous street at a furious pace, my eyes fixed firmly on the pavement, to get to work. (“Look up”, I now say to friends visiting London – I missed so much architectural finery by hurrying.) This time, casting my eyes upwards was never in any doubt. Regent Street was bedecked with flags, row upon row of them draped the whole way along the road, fluttering above the hustle and bustle of the throngs of shoppers in a stunning display of the national colours of the 205 competing nations. It was a sight I’ll never forget. But London is, of course, an impressive city to visit at any time. From high-end Mayfair to trendy Soho and leafy residential ‘villages’ such as Greenwich, Richmond and Hampstead, the thriving capital has a unique personality all of its own, formed by its worldfamous monuments and museums, centuries-old history, top-notch shopping and achingly cool fashion scene. A complete list of top attractions is impossible in such a short space, but here are five of my favourite things to do. Go for a spin: Climbing aboard one of the London Eye’s pods for a 30-minute ‘flight’ is a breathtaking experience, with panoramic views of the capital’s most famous landmarks. A prominent feature of the city’s skyline, the London Eye is the world's highest observation wheel, with 32 glass-enclosed capsules holding up to 28 people each. The Ferris wheel started sedately twirling in 2000 and draws 3.5 million visitors to London’s South Bank annually. At peak times, buy tickets online to avoid the queues or opt for the ‘fast-track’. Beautiful view of Westminster Bridge and Houses of Parliament with Thames river.

Explore the Tower: Within the walls of the Tower of London, you’ll learn unique facts about the castle’s 900-year history as a royal palace, prison and place of execution, arsenal, jewel house and zoo. Dating back to 1066, the Tower’s most popular attraction is its dazzling Crown Jewels, but you can also join a Beefeater on a tour, stand where famous heads rolled, see the resident black ravens and tiptoe through a medieval king's bedchamber. Be a royal guest: One of the few working royal palaces remaining in the world, Buckingham Palace is the Queen’s office and London residence. Nineteen State Rooms, still used to entertain dignitaries and guests of state, are open to the public from late July to late September. Throughout the year, you can visit The Queen's Gallery to view her personal collection of treasures, including paintings by Rubens and Rembrandt. Shop ‘til you drop: Shoppers will find it all too easy to spend a day hunting for bargains in Camden’s labyrinth open-air markets and myriad retails outlets, with everything from classy arts and crafts to vintage furniture, clothes and jewellery on offer. After strolling along the pretty Regent’s Canal, why not do some celebrity spotting at one of the pubs, clubs or live music venues? Admire the view: Rising steeply from the bottom of Hampstead Heath, Parliament Hill offers an iconic view over Central London. Let your eyes scan landmarks such as The Gherkin, St Paul's Cathedral and Canary Wharf Tower, then turn 180 degrees to watch the kite flyers who gather here to enjoy the breeze.

review Irreverent Romance-The Good House, by Ann Leary, is a novel so good that it is edible. The plot revolves around Hildy Good, a successful real estate broker in a small New England town; she's a divorced, irreverent unrecovered alcoholic, who finds herself in a surprising romance. An exceptional novel that is hilarious and sobering, The Good House asks the question: What will it take to keep Hildy Good from drinking for good? The characters are smart, fun, warm and flawed. A hilarious and sobering novel about life, love and real estate that makes each page worth reading!

Make your own Slime! An easy way to make your own slime for fun and parties! Messiness: Low, Age: 5+, Estimated time: 10 Minutes What You’ll Need •

2 mixing bowls

1 tsp Borax powder (found in any grocery store in the laundry detergent section)

½ cup school glue

Pair of gloves

8-9 drops of any food color(we used green)

Plastic bag

An adult to help.

This is what you are going to do: •

In a small mixing bowl, mix 1 tsp of Borax powder with ½ cup of water. Set the mixture aside.

In a large mixing bowl add ½ cup of school glue, ½ cup of water and 8-10 drops of food color. Stir to blend well.

Now add the borax mixture to it and knead the mixture well.

Pour the leftover water out.

Continue to knead the slime until it doesn’t stick to your hands.

When you are done, store it in a plastic bag with a few drops of water to keep it from drying out.

Voila you are done!
