It was a beautiful morning after a well deserved extended sleep and I tip toed around the bedroom trying not to disturb the three most important people in my life – it seems that yet again, my two beautiful boys managed to make their way into our bed at some point during the night. A gentle smile invaded my face as I observed the peaceful slumber of my wife and little men. It was such a perfect sight to begin my day with, and since I was just about to head to the office to pen my director’s note for the upcoming issue, it suddenly reminded me of how lucky I was to beyond all else, be blessed with such a healthy family! If we are healthy we rarely take the time to give thanks for this extraordinary luxury and simply take it for granted, but God forbid should this situation ever change. We have dedicated this issue of The Source to the courageous souls among us, who are battling breast cancer and to the heroes by their sides offering hope, support and love along every step of their journey towards a cure.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and we encourage our readers and the entire planet for that matter, to show solidarity in the battle against a menace that has and continues to rob us of our mothers, daughters, sisters, wives and in some cases even the brothers in our lives. Alone we are a faint and often lost cry in the breeze, but together we will be heard and all things become possible; so join in the togetherness spirit and let’s beat the odds and ultimately cancer along with them! We believe in you Al Ain and beyond…

Breast cancer is not just a disease that strikes at women. It strikes at the very heart of who we are as women: how others perceive us, how we perceive ourselves, how we live, work and raise our families-or whether we do these things at all. Debbie Wasserman Schultz
Hello The Source. I have been your follower for more than 2 years now. I useed to visit Al Ain mall just to get a copy of the magazine but now, I have moved to a place where a Source stand is available. I like most of the articles in the magazine but issue 56 really struck me. I loved it because the theme was about personal improvement both mentally and physically. Being a career woman I can really relate to these articles. It is good to know that there is a beauty enhancer like the Aromatic Anti fatigue moor mud. This would really suit me as I am not keen about workouts since my working days really tired me out. I was also very impressed by the Urban Woman article about ways to look your best. Three rules at work is a short but precise article to follow for a career person like me. Last but not the least, the atkins diet review; what Dr Nadia has written was a superb summary to help understand what the atkins diet is. I have read a lot about this diet but never understood most explanations but she made it very comprehensible. I am looking forward to reading more of your future delectable articles. More power to you The Source. Regards, Michelle Lamasan

CHECK FOR LEAKS!
Most of us would be surprised to find out that one in every five toilets leak, and since the leaks are usually silent, you probably have no idea that your toilet is leaking. A leaking toilet can waste anywhere from 30 to 500 gallons of water every day. To see if your toilet is leaking, put a few drops of food coloring in the toilet tank. If the dye shows up in the toilet bowl after 15 minutes or so, the toilet has a leak.

COMEPETITION ADDICT!
Fifty year old, Kim Searle, from Powys, Wales, has won AED5,95,026 worth of prizes after entering 100 competitions a day for 24 years now. She started her winning streak when she won a microwave in 1989 and got caught up in the craze known as comping.
Kim was in her mid-20s and recovering from cervical cancer when she first started trying her luck, as she faced being in and out of hospital over a six-month period and was unable to work.
Her prize haul now ranges from the small and wacky through to the big and glamorous with plenty in between; from a toaster and coffee maker to a holiday in Disneyland Florida, a trip to Hawaii and return flights to Australia. But there is one big win that continues to elude her and which spurs her on to enter again and again; a brand-new car. "I will never stop entering competitions. It's in my blood and it's part of my daily life”, stated Kim. You can find all the information you need at www.ielts.org or you can join one of our preparation courses. CAREER GUIDANCE

THE FACTS AND MYTHS ABOUT
A
s little as thirty years ago, being diagnosed with breast cancer was basically a death sentence for a great majority of women but since that time, great strides of progress equating to astounding survival rates in comparison, have been achieved. But let’s not get
too comfortable with these advances and Breast Cancer Awareness Month is here to remind us that this is still a very real and serious threat. In 2013 approximately 1.6 million people will be diagnosed with an invasive form of breast cancer and 400,000 of those diagnosed will lose the battle against this disease. This October, we encourage the woman of Al Ain and all across the world to take charge of their own breast health and through awareness and early detection, reduce or eliminate the risk of dying as a result of this menace. Becoming vigilant, understanding the facts and dispelling the myths, is paramount in fighting the battle against breast cancer.
THE FACTS AND MYTHS Myth: I’m only 35. Breast cancer happens only in older women. Fact: While the risk increases with age, all women are at risk for getting breast cancer. Myth: Only women with a family history of breast cancer get the disease. Fact: Most women who get breast cancer have no family history of the disease. However, a woman whose mother, sister or daughter had breast cancer has an increased risk.

Myth: If I don’t have a mutated BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene, I won’t get breast cancer. Fact: You can still get breast cancer, even without a gene mutation. About 90 to 95 percent of women who get breast cancer do not have this mutation. Myth: Women with more than one known risk factor get breast cancer. Fact: Most women with breast cancer have no known risk factors except being a woman and getting older. All women are at risk. Myth: You can prevent breast cancer. Fact: Because the causes of breast cancer are not yet fully known, there is no way to prevent it. Although breast cancer cannot be prevented, there are certainly a number of precautions and lifestyle adjustments that can be made to reduce the risk. • Maintain a Healthy Weight – Postmenopausal women who are overweight have a 30 to 60 percent higher breast cancer risk than those who are lean. • Add Exercise into Your Routine – Women who get regular physical activity may have a lower risk of breast cancer by about 10 to 20 percent, particularly in postmenopausal women. • Limit Alcohol Intake – Research has found that women who had two to three alcoholic drinks per day had a 20 percent higher risk of breast cancer.. • Breastfeed, if you can – Research has shown that mothers who breastfed for a lifetime total of one year (combined duration of breastfeeding for all children) were slightly less likely to get breast cancer than those who never breastfed.
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women.

How to be a
Breast Friend By Victoria Voit
16
The Source
Warning signs of breast cancer: 1. Lump, hard knot or thickening inside the breast or underarm area 2. Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening of the breast 3. Change in the size or shape of the breast
feature A diagnosis of breast cancer is devastating not only for the individual, but also for family and friends. It can be challenging to know what to say - a feeling of powerlessness may prevail. Supporting someone who is fighting breast cancer requires the tenacity of a warrior and the gentleness of a friend. LISTEN AND BE PRESENT It is important to be a good listener. Someone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer is afraid, angry and uncertain. Listening to these fears and being present with them, even in silence, can be a source of great strength for the person fighting cancer. Allowing them to express their anger and fears also demonstrates that you will be there to support them through it all, rather than abandoning them when times get tough.
BE A FACT FINDER, NOT AN ADVICE GIVER The initial diagnosis of breast cancer can lead to shock and anxiety. It is helpful to support the individual by gathering facts about dealing with
the disease, treatment options, and community resources, such as support groups. However, helping your loved ones find information is different from giving them advice about choosing their treatment or plan of care. Listen to them as they talk about their options and be helpful by finding more information as they desire, but don't give out unsolicited advice.
BE SUPPORTIVE OF YOUR LOVED ONE'S DECISION A myriad of decisions must be made by your loved one in relation to the treatment process. Your loved one will not make these decisions lightly and it is important to be supportive of their decision, even if it is not the road you would have chosen.
LAUGH Remember the old adage "laughter is the best medicine?" Don't be afraid to laugh and have fun. Living with cancer and supporting someone with cancer can be stressful, and learning to laugh together can help get you through the tough times that you will face.
ACKNOWLEDGE THE GRIEVING PROCESS The diagnosis of breast cancer for a woman attacks her very femininity and many of the treatment options continue in this attack. It is normal to go through a grieving process related to the feeling of this loss of femininity. Be supportive by listening to her anger, fear, and uncertainty and don't be afraid to hug her and touch her.
GATHER A SUPPORT NETWORK A variety of support groups are available to individuals living with breast cancer, as well as for individuals supporting a loved one with breast cancer. This is one of those times where you can't do everything alone. Ensure that you have a positive group of supporters surrounding and uplifting you as you care for your loved one and don't take on more than you can realistically do. Joining a support group is not a sign of weakness; it is a sign of strength which will be invaluable to you and your loved ones throughout this difficult time.
HAVE SOME FUN Go do something fun! It is vital to focus on more than just the disease, because your loved one is so much more than a diagnosis. It is important to do something fun – plan a girl's night chick-flick movie marathon (or horror flick marathon if that is more to your liking), or, pending your loved one's energy level, go out to the park, go to a game, take a walk, or go out to dinner. It is OK to laugh and have fun.
BE YOURSELF It can be challenging to know what to do or say when supporting someone living with breast cancer, but it is important to be yourself. Being genuine shows your loved one how much you truly care about him or her as an individual, not a disease. A warrior has strength and is prepared to fight through the challenges. Living with breast cancer requires the strength, steadfastness, and determination of a warrior; yet it cannot be done alone; it requires an equally strong and driven group of warriors who will support their loved ones through the highs and lows -- never giving up and never letting go.

Bald & Beautiful! By Mehak Alam
One of the many challenges women with breast cancer face is maintaining their dignity and a beautiful appearance while having to deal with hair loss, hot flashes and other very unpleasant side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Here are a few great tips to help you stay beautiful inside and out. Tip#1: The number one rule for anyone going through chemotherapy or radiation is stay out of the sun. Your skin becomes incredibly sensitive during these treatments making you more susceptible to sunburn. To give yourself a healthy glow, use a mild self-tanner on your entire body and face. Tip#2: Before your hair falls out try a funky new and bold short haircut to minimize messy floors and clogged drains. And in case you go completely bald, don’t feel embarrassed; instead, try covering your scalp with funky scarves and turbans. Tip#3: Thinned-out brows can completely wash you out and appear to change the shape of your face; filling them in with an eye shadow that's a shade or two lighter than your natural brow color is a key trick to learn. Try buying an eyebrow kit that has all the useful utensils like stencils, mascara, an eyebrow brush and colors that can help to draw in eyebrows. Tip#4: One of the worst things to happen is the loss of eyelashes. Try different ways to fake fuller-looking lashes. Use a fine eyeliner brush and a dark gel liner to coat the inner rim of the upper lash line which will create the illusion of lush lashes. Make sure to fill in the gaps between the lashes. Tip#5: Give lips a hint of natural color with moisturizing balm; as color-drained, dry lips can be a real bother. While a heavy-duty moisturizer is a must, enjoy using a balm that brings a bit of color to your pout. Use lighter shades and keep smiling. Tip #6: Wake up your look with a shimmering highlighter. It will instantly brighten up your face, making you look awake and radiant. Apply a dab of shimmering highlighter to the corners of your eyes, on your brow bones, the tops of your cheekbones, and on the Cupid's bow (right above your lip), for an instant skin pick-me-up. You'll be amazed at the number of people that tell you how great you look!

PINK!
L
Around 2,190 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 and about 410 men will lose their lives because of the disease. ast year, Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP) organized a 10-day ride –The Pink Caravan, that helped screen 5000 people across the UAE and almost 22% who underwent the medical examination were men.
This growing number of men being screened reinforced the belief that perceived social barriers were completely groundless and unjustified. The Pink Caravan has managed to correct social misconceptions and dispel damaging myths. According to the Medical Director of the campaign, Dr. Sawsan Al Madhi, for every 100 cases of breast cancer worldwide one victim will be male. “The theme was all about dispelling myths. So one of the important myths we want to tackle is that cancer is not contagious. Yes, you can be cured of breast cancer if you get it treated early and of course the biggest myth – that men do not get breast cancer.” BREAST CANCER IN MEN Although breast tissue cells in men are less likely to develop breast cancer than they are in women, men are not completely safe from the ravages of the disease. Several different forms of breast cancer can develop in men. The most common type is known as invasive ductal carcinoma; it develops in the ducts and then spreads into the breast’s fatty tissue. In some cases, the cancer then spreads to other parts of the body as well. About 80% of male breast cancer cases are invasive ductal carcinoma. About 10%of breast cancer in men does not spread beyond the ducts or outside the duct
Gynecomastia, is a common condition that often appears as a swelling or small tissue mass on a man’s chest under the nipple and areola. In more severe cases, gynecomastia causes a man’s breast to grow larger. Treating Breast Cancer in Men: Depending on the severity of the breast cancer, men may have just the tumor or the lymph nodes under the arm removed. In some cases removal of the chest wall muscles under the chest might also take place. This is usually followed by a long-term course of hormone therapy using a medication called tamoxifen, that helps in blocking the effects of hormones on breast tissue known to stimulate the growth of cancerous cells. In other cases radiotherapy , chemotherapy or targeted therapy may be used for the same purpose. Could You Have Breast Cancer?: Well, anyone can be affected by Breast Cancer and lately if you have been noticing an unusual lump or growth in your chest do not ignore it. Although chances that the abnormality is not serious, a professional screening is always the best bet. walls. This form, called ductal carcinoma in situ, is typically cured with surgery. WHY IT HAPPENS? The cause of male breast cancer is unclear, but factors known to increase your chances of developing the condition include: • Age: Most cases affect men over 60 years of age. • Family History: Having a family history of breast cancer (male or female). • Obesity: A body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more. • Radiation exposure: men who have been exposed to chest X-rays or other radiation in the past. • Alcohol use: Drinking too much alcohol.. • Inherited gene mutations: Men who have inherited mutations of the breast cancer susceptibility gene 1 or 2 (BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes) have a higher risk of breast cancer. • Liver disease: Men with liver disease may be at greater risk because the liver is involved in the breakdown of sex hormones, thus resulting in higher than normal estrogen levels. • Testicular conditions: Men with undescended testicles, those who don’t have testicles (due to surgical removal), and men who get mumps as adults may be at greater risk of breast cancer. • Klinefelter Syndrome: About one in 1,000 men have this rare congenital condition, characterized by abnormally high estrogen levels and abnormally low male hormone levels.

The new chalets in the Falaj Wing are contained within four individual buildings, with each building consisting of four one-bedroom and eight studio suites. All one-bedroom suites can be combined with a studio to create a two-bedroom set up, if desired, and all guests will enjoy access to the wing’s adult and separate children’s pool. Fighting the Fight against Breast Cancer

lthough the color pink is usually seen as fun and girlish, it is also commonly associated with breast cancer awareness campaigns, an issue of serious concern for the women in the UAE and all around the globe. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in the country and not surprisingly, the second biggest killer of women, according to the Ministry of Health. The only registered cancer specific charitable, volunteer-based foundation operating in the UAE, FoCP, was established in 1999 under the directives of HH Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, President of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, and wife of the Ruler of Sharjah & Federal Supreme Council Member, His Royal Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al-Qasimi. And since then, it has been continuously delivering moral, financial, and clinical support to over 900 breast cancer patients and their families – regardless of their nationality, gender, age, religion, or ethnicity.
Recommendations for follow-up care : 1. Have a mammogram every 12 months. 2. Have a physical exam performed by a health care provider every 4 to 6 months for 5 years, then every 12 months. 3. Have a pelvic exam every 12 months if taking tamoxifen and have not had the uterus removed.
al majlis PINK CARAVAN Every year over 150 experienced horse riders undertake a horseback ride that crosses all seven emirates, from the most urban to the most remote, gathering support across different sectors and bringing together schools, universities, corporations, Pink Caravan ambassadors, and royalty. The ride is, however, about more just creating visibility. The real impact is created by the Pink Caravan’s mobile clinics that accompany the Ride, setting up early detection breast cancer screening centers across the UAE and educating the community on the importance of regular self-examination in counteracting breast cancer. Pink Caravan Ride has travelled over 900km across the seven emirates, with over 250 riders and 200 volunteers helping to ensure its success. Lectures and presentations have been delivered at more than 50 schools and more than 250 mobile medical clinics have been set up with more than 23,000 people, including over 5,450 men, being screened.
To find out more about FoCP, The Source met with one of the founding members and President of FoCP, HE Ameera Abdul Rahim Binkaram, who is also the Chairperson of the Sharjah Business Women Council. Were you always interested in doing charitable work? Ameera Bin Karam: to a great extent yes. My parents always encouraged my siblings and me to do something constructive in life. This is one of the reasons I developed an affinity for social work and in fact, began participating in social projects during my school days. What inspired you to join FoCP? The reason behind joining FoCP was simple; the issue of cancer is very close to my heart. I come from a family that has an extensive history with the disease. Several members of my family have been victims and I began working with breast cancer patients long before the FoCP was established. What are the main objectives of FoCP? Early detection is vital in the treatment of any form of cancer and as such, our first objective is to insure that proper education is in place along with the necessary financial and moral support. Our second objective is branching out to the advanced breast cancer patients via our Pink Caravan breast cancer awareness campaign. What activities are being held by the society? FoCP’s breast cancer awareness efforts run under the umbrella of the “KASHF” program, which is an initiative to promote the importance of the early detection of breast cancer. FoCP also provides monetary support that covers treatment expenses for chemotherapy, radiation and other required medications, in addition to expenses for investigative and surgical procedures. We also facilitate sending patients abroad for treatment, provide prosthetic limbs and medical equipment, and offer both psychological and moral support to our patients and their families. What were some the challenges you faced during the initial founding of FoCP? Lack of information and an uneducated public with respect to the prevalence of breast cancer was the biggest challenge. The absence
of up-to-date statistics and mortality rates were also an issue but the implementation of the first ever Unified Cancer Registry for the UAE, helped tackle this problem. The second biggest challenge was attempting to dispel the existing taboo associated with breast cancer and bring about a change in mentality. Through continuous education and support programs, we have been able to make a huge difference. Today, the public is much more comfortable with the topic, making it much easier to tackle the problem. Do you believe that we will ever eradicate cancer? Cancer is a pervasive problem that touches every part of the community, and if we truly want to achieve a Cancer-free UAE, we will need to work together on multiple fronts. Non-profitable organizations, government and corporate entities should all work hard in bringing about real change in society. What are your future plans? FoCP’s mission is to save lives by spreading awareness about Breast Cancer. We are constantly raising the bar and setting new targets to expand our achievements. We want to empower the community and find different ways to raise awareness and give every possible form of support to cancer patients in the UAE. HE Ameera Bin Karam, has achieved a lot in a short career span. She climbed every step of the professional ladder with sheer determination and courage. In 1997 she joined her family business (UAE based BinKaram Group of Companies) as an office girl who served coffee to all the managers but gradually worked her way up to become the Director of Human Resources Management. She now looks after the interests of more than 2000 employees and has her sights set on the position of Vice President.

Curiosity Didn’t Really Kill the Cat
T
he quote “Curiosity killed the cat,” made me wonder. Shakespeare himself coined a similar quote: “What, courage man! What though care killed a cat; thou hast mettle enough in thee to kill care. ” “Curiosity” and “care” seem to connote “worry” here.
for storytelling. I used the five senses that we were learning in class in different ways. For example, for the sense of “sight” we studied “colors”. The children did a sorting activity with colored straws and counted the straws that they sorted, doing some simple addition. Then, on the way out to the playground, I had a basket of colored balls and in order to get a ball the boys had to name the color of the ball. The class was more interesting. I was more inspired and “curious” and the day seemed to progress with more purpose. It wasn’t that everything was “formulated”, but the kid’s questions did inform my teaching.
Investigating and exploring the world are skills that adults aspire to. To have children find inspiration and become curious about their own worlds is in my opinion, a great skill to have throughout their lives.
With a mind set on learning, I have decided this school year, to lean very heavily on a child’s natural inclination to investigate and question. I spent all last week recording and observing what each of the children were doing at given times in the classroom and gauging their interests in activities set out. There are children who love to write, children who enjoy building, children who enjoy navigating their way on the computer, there are children who dig into the creative arts and expression through painting and molding, children who naturally pick up books and children who enjoy physical play. While with a classroom of over twenty little boys, it’s not an easy task to be everywhere at all times. I try very hard to “listen” to them and “hear” how they best learn.
I find it so intriguing to find out what children are thinking. There are so many moments in which I bust out laughing because I can see the earnestness when they tell me things in the classroom. Two little boys had an argument; they both speak fairly good English and apparently their argument transpired in English. The argument got personal and while both tried to explain their sides, I could see that we were at an impasse. Rather than “solve” the problem for them by dictating what they should think, see or believe, I had them shake hands over it. They both walked away smiling. One little boy’s mother who happens to work in my school came into the classroom. She told me that her little boy said that he is “dying” in my class and that all they do is play. Rather than argue with her and tell her the benefits of learning how to negotiate through sharing resources, learning about geometry and spatial relations in building with blocks, learning to become interested in books through a reading center, I decided to dig in and get the child to learn something he was ready for. He ended up remaining in the class the rest of the day. The difference; I sat with him and did some baseline testing. I made an earnest effort to rally the troops in 24

The great Albert Einstein marveled, “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.” Hope renewed, I look to the future with an eye towards those looking towards me for information about their own interests. Learning from these little minds, reminds me of my own smallness. In some way, my hope is that a curiosity engendered in a classroom full of questions seeking answers inspires learning and brings us all into a place of wonder about a world we are all continually discovering.

Zaem Al Karak Cafeteria ByTamara Al Refaei
Most of us require that early morning boost to give us the necessary energy to successfully navigate through another busy working day. Some go for a coffee while others prefer tea, but those that have experienced Karak tea, will never settle for anything else. And thus begins a love story involving Karak tea and its predominantly younger generation of fans. If you are not familiar with Karak tea, it is a tea made with milk according to the Indian way and has been enjoyed in the UAE and G.C.C. since the early days of trade between India and this region. It has since then become a top choice on hot drink menus and its popularity shows no signs of decline. The word “Karak” means; condensed, doubled or heavy, and is a testament to the consistency and flavor of this particular hot beverage. As evening approaches, a cup of Karak tea is back on the list of necessities; bringing a little Zen back to an otherwise hectic day, and a perfect place to enjoy it along with a Paratha sandwich to appease the hunger pangs, is the Zaem Al Karak Cafeteria. Once you pull up in front of this Al Ain land mark, you will immediately find yourself in the company of a multitude of other folks who share your desire for refreshment. Whether it is morning, noon or night, this popular hub is always bustling with fans of the infamous Karak tea and Paratha sandwhiches. Here you’ll find a vast selection of Karak tea flavours like plain Karak, Karak with saffron and Karak with ginger just to name a few. As for the Paratha sandwiches, get ready for a selection of fillings like: cheese, cheese with honey, spicy chicken, beef and many more. And when all is said and done, perhaps the biggest surprise of all will be the astoundingly low price associated with so much goodness! The next time you happen to be in the vicinity of this traditional and humble cafeteria, why not stop in and sample a cup of the legendary tea to taste what all the fuss is about! Zaem Al Karak Cafeteria is located on Khalifa Street, behind The Golden Fork Restaurant. Opening hours are from 7 in the morning till 12 noon, and from 4 pm till midnight. 26

breast cancer
he most common cancer in women worldwide is breast cancer. Treatment options are various and there is a high survival rate. However, the age old adage that prevention is better than a cure certainly holds true for cancer. There are many changes you can make in your diet, along with lifestyle modifications and self-examination that reduce your risk of developing breast cancer. NUTS AND SEEDS – these are sources of immune boosting vitamins and minerals. Flaxseeds, rich in omega-3s and fibre, can be consumed whole, ground or as oils. Add it to yoghurt or a milkshake for a rich nutty flavour. Use the oil in salad dressings and baking. Brazil and walnuts are full of fibre, phytochemicals and antioxidants. These can help fight inflammation, boost the immune system and resist tumour growth. A handful is enough to get the benefits and they can be enjoyed with fruits or vegetables such as asparagus that contain chlorophyll; another anticancer component. GARLIC – often thought to ward off evil, slows tumour growth and reduces the risk of other cancers. It is full of the cancer fighting compound, allium. Relatives such as onions, leeks, scallions and chives are also helpful. Use garlic in a variety of dishes by crushing or even swallowing it whole every morning. The effects of garlic on your breath can be countered by adding milk apples or spinach to the same meal.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES - pomegranates contain polyphenols that fight cancer. All berries are rich sources of antioxidants and phytochemicals which play a role in reducing oxidation and cancer cell formation. Add some blueberries to your cereal or to plain yoghurt for a tasty snack or eat them with dark chocolate as a treat. Dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale are also loaded with nutrients your body needs to battle cancer. Vegetables belonging to the cruciferous family such as cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and broccoli, are rich in sulforophane and indole, which help regulate cell growth. Chilli and jalapeno peppers have beneficial components including capsaicin which fights the growth rate of cancer cells. Green peppers are rich in chlorophyll, red peppers in capsaicin and antioxidant carotenoids. Put them in a vegetable stir-fry or enjoy them with hummus. Fruits and vegetables contain beneficial fibre, vitamin B, phytochemicals and chlorophyll. WHOLE GRAINS AND LEGUMES – these are rich in fibre, essential vitamins and minerals. Choose nutrient dense ones such as barley, oats, brown rice and whole wheat. Skip their refined counterparts such as white bread, white pasta etc. Rolled oats make for a great cereal and brown rolls go well with any meal. Lentils and beans contain folic acid, fibre and many other nutrients that boost immunity. SKIP OR REDUCE – refined carbohydrates such as white flour and sugar. Give up low fat and low carb processed snacks such as candies, cakes, chips and soda. Reduce your consumption of red meat and reduce cooking temperatures, without compromising food safety. Avoid foods containing saturated and transfats which are usually in processed and fried foods. The best diet to follow for a healthy and disease-resistant life is a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meat and healthy dairy products. This should be accompanied with an active lifestyle that includes exercise. BREAST SELF EXAMINATION: Early detection of any abnormalities in your breasts increases your chance of being cured. • To start look at your breasts in the mirror with your shoulders straight and hands on your hips. Look at the usual size, shape and colour of your breasts. Check for any abnormal change in shape or swelling. Repeat this by raising your arms. • Next, lie on your back and feel your breasts using a firm, smooth touch while keeping the fingers flat. Use a circular motion and cover the entire breast from top to bottom and side to side. Use the approach you are most comfortable with and repeat while standing or sitting. Consult your doctor if you find anything concerning or out of the ordinary.
The best way to find breast cancer early is to get screened. Talk to your health care provider about what screening tests are right for you. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast.

BURQA
W By Mehak Alam
hile shopping at the annual Eid al Adha Fair at the Al Ain Convention Center, it struck me that the local inhabitants of Al Ain take great pride in their traditions. They still appreciate old crafts, traditional dances and the typical Emirati way of dressing.
One of the most facinating items of traditional dress is without a doubt the Burqa. Call it a special mask or just a random accessory, a traditional Burqa is undoubtedly a very unique fashion statement of Khaleeji folklore dress. Burqa, also called naqba, baqara, maqrun and al butulah al khaleejia in some other countries of the Arab world, is designed to imitate the features of a falcon that symbolizes Elegance, Power and Pride. Usually black in color, the Burqa is worn by women of almost all age groups but as per the Emirati shopkeeper at the fair, parents put Burqas on their daughter’s faces when they reach puberty. Young single women usually wear straight shaped Burqas that are accessorized while married women don plain ones. Although they come in different shapes, Burqas are basically the
same form. Traditionally, a part of the forehead is covered and a thin line of fabric runs down the nose. The lower part of the face, from the mouth to the chin, is partly or completely covered by the mask. The fabric used in making a Burqa was traditionally imported from India but when imported fabric was unavailable, Emirati women sewed their own Burqas using a leather type cloth piece. Women were also free to design their own masks according to the customs of their tribe. The process of making a Burqa is very easy. First the linen fabric is dyed blue or violet and rubbed against a glass ball until it attains a metallic luster. In order to add a modern touch, the thicker vertical string is made out of sheep’s wool. To add a shine, some women rubbed the outer part of the Burqa with an oyster which also helped to smooth the surface of the outer lining. To make it smell pleasant, a pinch of Bakhoor (powdered incense) was also rubbed on the inner side of the Burqa. Although we don’t see Emirati woman wearing a Burqa on a daily basis, it is still a must have fashion accessory. It is incorporated into the clothing collections of modern Emirati and western designers and appears in fashion shows as well. Today the colors and shapes of the masks may differ from the traditional designs, and are often decorated with shimmering crystals or diamonds, but Burqa is never going to be forgotten and is here to stay for centuries! They are available in numerous traditional fashion outlets throughout Al Ain ranging from AED20-AED200. The Source

WHEN IN
ROME The Eternal City and famed cradle of the Roman Empire will attract visitors from here to eternity. Here’s our round-up of must-see sights in the Italian capital By Marianne Makdisi
32
The Source
R
ome has to be one of Europe’s most beautiful and historic capitals. Home of the Roman Empire, the Vatican City, and numerous millennium-old churches and basilicas, the city has had a far-reaching impact on society in its 2,800 years of existence. Given these impeccable credentials, it’s hardly surprising that a trip to Rome is like stepping into the world’s biggest openair museum. I visited the Eternal City a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed tripping over history at every turn. The centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, crisscrossed with palaces, ruins, statues, monuments and graceful fountains. Everywhere you look, there’s evidence of Rome’s transformation from a small Latin village to the nerve-centre of a vast empire, then into today’s Italian capital and government seat. If you’re staying in the modern centre, where many of the hotels are located, you’ll discover that Rome is also a top shopping destination and one of the world’s fashion capitals. Some of the biggest Italian labels - Fendi, Valentino, Bulgari – call Rome home and you will find their flagship stores, as well as boutiques by Prada, Armani, Versace, Gucci and many others, along the grid of streets near the Spanish Steps. Foodies, too, won’t be disappointed. From family-run trattorias and pizzerias to fancier restaurants, there’s no shortage of culinary choice for those not watching their carbs. Don’t leave without trying a focaccia-style pizza bianca, literally translated as ‘white pizza’; an authentic, hearty pasta dish; and a thin-crust Roman pizza. (Buy it by the slice as street food.)
my world The Italian capital is also unbeatable if it’s romance you’re looking for, with amore all over the city. Your rendezvous in Rome could include a ride in a horse-drawn carriage, a serenaded dinner cruise along the Tiber River and, of course, the theatrical Trevi Fountain, which is even more enchanting at night than in the daytime. Legend has it that if you throw a coin into the water (right hand over your left shoulder, back to the water), a return trip to Rome is guaranteed. ALL ROADS LEAD TO ROME The city enjoys a temperate climate, with mild, rainy winters, hot, dry summers and pleasant temperatures in spring and autumn (the peak seasons). Due to Rome's proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, it’s not uncommon for the region to experience fine beach weather from the beginning of May until mid-October. Our trip was packed full of churches, archaeological sights, piazzas and paintings, balanced with time out in pavement cafes and gelato (ice cream) breaks. There’s so much to do in Rome, it’s impossible to list all the sights here, but these are my pointers to set you on your way: The Colosseum is Rome’s most famous Classical ruin, and was the biggest structure of its type in ancient Rome. It took 10 years to build and served as an entertainment centre, enthralling visitors with the gladiatorial and animal combats that took place within the elliptical-shaped arena. Visiting the Colosseum today is even more fascinating now that you can tour the underfloor passageways, through which gladiators and wild beasts made their entrances. Palatine Hill, home to Roman emperors and aristocrats, is nearby and a ramble through the hillside ruins and museum is a must. The Pantheon is a Roman temple dedicated to all the gods of pagan Rome and is incredibly well preserved considering it was built and dedicated between AD118 and 125. These dates are revealed on the brick stamps on the side of the building. The great squares are among Rome’s best attractions; Piazza del Campidoglio (on Capitol Hill) is the headquarter of the Italian Government; Piazza Venezia marks the heart of the city; and Piazza Navona represents the triumphant Baroque epoch. Vatican City, the papal residence and headquarter of the Roman Catholic Church, was built over the tomb of Saint Peter and is the smallest state in the world. Along with the huge St Peter's Basilica, you’ll find museums, the restored Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel and the Vatican gardens. Be prepared for queues at St Peter’s and prebook your slot at the Vatican Museums (mv. vatican.va) website to avoid an even longer wait there.

review Smart Thriller-Case Histories by Kate Atkinson, is a novel that will have you staying up all night because you've got to know what happens next. She also has a gift for language and spins a beautiful sentence like few others can. The story is about Jackson Brodie, a private detective who investigates three very different murders throughout the book. It's suspenseful, but more of a literary novel than a crime novel. So read while you sip your evening cup of coffee.

There was a grocery shop in a town. Plenty of mice lived in that grocery shop. Food was in plenty for them. They ate everything and spoiled all the bags. They also wasted the bread, biscuits and fruits of the shop. The grocer got really worried. So, he thought "I should buy a cat and let it stay at the grocery. Only then can I save my things."

He bought a nice, big fat cat and let him stay there. The cat had a nice time hunting the mice and killing them. The mice could not move freely now. They were afraid that anytime the cat would eat them up.

The mice wanted to do something. They held a meeting and all of them squeeked "We must get rid of the cat. Can someone give a suggestion"? All the mice sat and brooded. A smart looking mouse stood up and said, "The cat moves softly. That is the problem. If we can tie a bell around her neck, then things will be fine. We can know the movements of the cat". “Yes, that is the answer,” stated all the mice. An old mouse slowly stood up and asked, "Who will tie the bell?" There was no reply to this this question and hence, the issue was never resolved.
