here are two things in life that are guaranteed occurrences for all of us without exception; being born and dying, and no matter how hard anyone tries, it is impossible to prepare oneself for either one. They are both incidents of chance if you will, and cannot be predicted. What we do have control over is everything in between. As parents we can all identify with the miracle of bringing a child into the world, and no matter what you are told, you can never quite appreciate the responsibilities that unfold until you are confronted with this precious life, and the reality rests innocently in your arms. They are yours forever, yet we are wise to understand that we cannot keep them in our protective custody indefinitely. Khalil Gibran said it best, “You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.” The bow is a symbol of the stability we have the responsibility of providing our children with, as we strive to set them on a righteous path through life. We can best teach our children valuable and necessary life lessons through our own actions, and make no mistake, actions will always speak much louder than words! Living is a journey of choices and yes, action. We are all too familiar with the age old art of procrastination and the insane notion that somehow desired changes in our lives might miraculously occur by repeating over and over again, the same previously unsuccessful patterns. Life is too short for this type of behaviour, and the last few weeks provided me with all too many sad reminders of this, as I witnessed the passing of two personal close friends and the loved ones of a few others. I fondly recall my father sharing words of wisdom with me as I lay welcoming a deep slumber after an eventful day of living. “Son”, he would say,” rest peacefully, but when you awaken, give praise to the lord for a new day and another opportunity to accomplish the things in life that matter most, as we never know when that opportunity will be taken away from us.” These were extremely wise words that resonate in my soul, as I grow older and begin to appreciate how very short our time here really is. Make good choices in life and take the necessary actions required to achieve your goals before it is too late, and you will leave a regretless legacy behind you. As for my friends who are no longer with me, I take comfort knowing that there are a few more brilliant souls among the angels, helping to guide us along this miraculous journey of living!

y k c a W d l r o W LOST DOG IS FOUND... AFTER NINE YEARS
Milissa Mae, 47, thought she would never see Niamh again when she vanished in May 2004, aged just three. The Staffordshire bull terrier slipped through a gap in a back garden fence at the Mae family’s home near Worcester. Despite a frantic search, Niamh could not be found and her owners resigned themselves to never seeing her again.
Milissa received a phone call in December 2013 from an animal sanctuary telling her Niamh had been found 80 miles away in Salisbury, Wiltshire. Wardens took her in after she was spotted wandering the streets of the cathedral city and traced her owners through her microchip. Niamh was taken to Bath Cats and Dogs Home for an emotional reunion with her owner. Even staff at the shelter were moved to tears when the pair met – and Niamh recognised Milissa despite their years apart. When you shopping, wants to say prices too expensive say

Eyes sparkling with liveliness, A smile set back on her face. Sitting eagerly on the swing, Unaware of the worldly race. "Up, up, up!" she shrieks, Giggles and laughs and beams, As her feet lift from the ground, Delightedly, joyfully screams. Back and forth, Back and forth, She soars through the sky. Back and forth, back and forth, Calls out to the birds that fly. Up and down in the air, Up and down she plays. With the ups and downs of life though, Still oblivious she stays. BY: MAHNOOR CHOUDHARY

Spoils of W.A.R. Saturday, January 18th saw 550 competitors coming together to take on the 5th installment of the Wadi Adventure Race – a grueling 10km obstacle race hosted by Wadi Adventure in Al Ain. Faced with a stiff morning breeze and temperatures barely reaching double digits, the kaleidoscopic mass of 550 racers was led by race creator Sean Kinsella to the starting line - an abandoned service road that sent runners into the vast emptiness of the desert. That emptiness was short-lived as each runner approached the dreaded ‘Sandbag Pick-Up point’ - a nasty 30kgs for men and 15kgs for women. Having kept dry for the first 3km’s of the race, athletes were then forced to fight the currents up the Wadi Adventure whitewater channels, ending up at the familiar ‘Raft Leap’. Keeping to the classics, Sean relied on a number of tried-and-tested obstacles, but also introduced a range of new and exciting obstacles to keep the runners guessing. New obstacles included enlisting the help of our friends at the Emirates Fire & Rescue Company – hosing runners down as they passed; a new ‘Tire Pull’ challenge – set up by the Reebok Lifespark crew; and 2.5 tons of Ice dumped into the ‘Ice Pit’ and ‘Plunge Pool’ below the monkey bars. As always,
runners had to scale the 3 meter high ‘Wall’ before stepping onto the finishing mat and collecting the coveted W.A.R. medal. Lifting the trophy in 1st place for the Men (Category A) was Olympic Kayaker Kilian Foulon, with a time of 55:20. In 2nd place, Ryan Jucker with 56:41, and just one second behind, Boris Rajencikz in 3rd with a time of 56:42. Winning the Ladies Category A for the second time in a row was Eva Clarke in a time of 1:00:27. In 2nd place with a time of

Taxi driver faces death for running over 12year–old in Abu Dhabi The Appellate Court in Abu Dhabi has awarded death sentence to an Asian taxi driver for fatally running over a 12-year-old Arab child. According to a report in Emarat Al Youm, he reportedly chased a group of children in Al Musaffah area, Abu Dhabi, and deliberately ran over the child. Court records detailing the case says that he was angry after the children disturbed him while he was sitting in his car and so he took after them. Meanwhile, the kids testified that while the suspect was sitting in the taxi, they did make fun of him by throwing rubbish inside the vehicle. They also clarified that the deceased child had not taken part in the act. The suspect, initially told the courts that he did rush towards the group of children at a speed of 40kmph, but had unintentionally ran over one of them. However, technical evidence contradicted his statements because the site examination confirmed that the run-over was deliberate. He had intentionally swerved towards the group as the area is not paved for vehicles.

14 People Injured in a 57 Car Pile-Up Due to Heavy Fog One person was seriously injured, while 13 others sustained medium and minor injuries as a result of a major car crash involving 57 vehicles on the Al Ain-Abu Dhabi highway on Thursday morning. The accident took place on both sides of the highway near the Abu Samrah area as a result of low visibility and heavy fog. According to the police, around 39 cars rammed into each other on the Abu DhabiAl Ain side of the road, while 18 vehicles hit each other in the opposite direction. The accident brought traffic to a complete standstill, and drivers were redirected to alternative routes, from the Al Yahar Bridge, and from the Ramah Bridge to the truck road. Major Salah Abdulalh Al Humairi, Chief of the Al Ain Traffic and Patrols Section at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate General of the Abu Dhabi Police, noted that the traffic patrols and ambulances from the Emergency and Public Safety Department, as well as the civil defense vehicles, were dispatched to the scene immediately after receiving the notification. “The preliminary
investigation showed that the accident occurred due to low visibility, and to drivers’ failure to leave a sufficient safe distance between vehicles and to reduce speed during such changing weather conditions,” said Major Al Humairi. He also said that through joint cooperation, as per the emergency plan for fog-related incidents, the directorate evacuated the injured and transferred them to hospitals for treatment. Ahmed Al Qasimi with his trusted camels Ghaiman and Dhafar at the Heritage Village
I
One man camel caravan f you were to take some of the most famous world explorers of the past like Ibn Battuta, Marco Polo, Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan and a host of others immortalized by their hunger for adventure and amazing acquisitions of knowledge, and place them on a round the world camel voyage, you would have Ahmed Al Qasimi. This modern day traveler extraordinaire is making history with his incredible journeys from Yemen to Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia on his ship of the desert, carrying the message of peace and brotherhood from Arabia.
Ahmed is a 52 year old farmer’s son hailing from a small village in Yemen with a gleaming adventurous sparkle in his eyes as he fondly describes his heroic journey in great detail. This very humble man is truly an Arabian ambassador who justifiably carries a calling card bearing this description.
Helped by strangers, welcomed by heads of states, having survived attacks by lions and bandits in Morrocco, he now camps peacefully in Dubai, at the Heritage Village established in the Global Village by the Hamdan bin Mohammed Heritage Center. The centre was founded last summer by Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktum, Crown Prince of Dubai, to revive the UAE’s traditional and cultural heritage, and raise public awareness about Emirati traditions and values, especially among the younger generations. It also sponsored Al Qasimi’s fourth trip, to Africa, providing him with a companion on camelback, 24-year-old lionhearted photographer Muneer Al Dohami, to record the journey for posterity. Some of the photographs as well as Al Qasimi’s four books will be on display at the Heritage Village. Al Qasimi is a symbol of Arab culture and his presence in the Global Village highlights this part of the Arab heritage.
His epic journey began in 1994 - after attempting a previous around the world on foot trek - and spanned 40,000 kilometers. He was driven by a thirst for experiencing different cultures and traditions, and sharing his unique experience with his 10 children and the people of this planet, who he refers to as his brothers and sisters. Mankind shares a common history and as such, has a need to care for and nurture one another instead of fighting. As an advocate of the peace and harmony the Arabic culture truly stands for, it became his mission to bring this message to the world. As a symbol of Arabian culture, the camel proved to be the ideal vehicle to make his fantastic journey. Perched proudly atop his majestic beast, Ghaiman, and dressed in traditional clothes, he created a spectacle that mesmerized the throngs of people that rushed out of their shops and homes to greet him throughout his voyage. Skin Care Tips for
Cold Weather
T
he winter breeze is here, and soon we will be changing and rearranging our wardrobe to warmer clothes and colors. This extends to our dressing table and beauty cabinet. There are things that will be pushed to the back of the cabinet and products that will be pushed forward. Let’s take a journey through your skin care routine for this season!
White BB+ Cream with its GenActiv formula that brightens your natural skin tone. It’s active ingredients work on your skin tone, and provide both coverage and sunscreen all in one, to give flawless looking skin immediately that works on your natural glow.
Pay attention to your face and neck cleansing routine: You will notice that your skin will need to change cleansers when the winter air starts blowing in. During the summer, skin becomes more oily with the heat and humidity, but in winter that's not the case. Choose a mild non-irritating cleanser, and be sure it doesn't contain any harsh ingredients. One of my favorites is Pond’s Gold Radiance Foam cleanser. For dry skin types, you will need a milk or a lotion base moisturizing cleanser. All skin types should still exfoliate gently once a week to remove debris, clogged pores, and dry flaky skin.
Don’t forget to exfoliate: There is a nice honey and sugar body at-home-remedy that I like to make and use myself. Honey acts as a humectant and reduces inflammation. When massaged on the skin, it increases circulation and acts as a mild exfoliant. Use this mixture once per week on elbows and knees for noticiable skin softening.
You will need your moisturizer: All skin types in winter will need some sort of moisturizing fluid, lotion, or cream - even acne prone skin. Read labels carefully and choose the product that is specific to your skin type and problem. So, if you suffering from acne, choose a hydrating lotion that is specific for acne prone skin, and that is labeled non comedogenic. If you have dry eczema prone skin, choose a hypo allergic non irritating moisturizer. Sunscreens and BB creams: Just because you feel the cool winter air it doesn’t mean that the sun isn't shining along with its harmful rays. A broad spectrum sunscreen that protects from both UVA and UVB with the recommended SPF 30 and above is still mandatory. You can use the Pond’s Flawless 14

Use Milk and lactic acids for softer skin: It was said that Cleopatra used to bathe in milk which kept her skin soft and smooth. That's not far from scientific truth as milk contains lactic acid. This ingredient is used in body moisturizers to help remove dry flaky skin. Look for those in moisturizers; apply it twice daily to rough dry skin to get smoother hydrated healthy looking body skin.
Shower oils and lotions: I’ve become a big fan of prescribing shower oil cleansers to my patients who complain of dry flaky irritated skin. Many of us have busy lives and this has reduced the need to use a moisturizer right after showering and bathing. Another option is to find good moisturizing shower cleansing lotions such a Dove Deeply Nourishing Body Wash. 10 minute showers and bath: Feeling cold makes us want to take longer hot showers and baths to relax and warm up. But the longer you shower or bathe, the dryer the skin becomes. Limit your bath and shower to not more than 10 minutes and make sure the last rinse is with slightly colder water. No matter what the season is, you should always visit your dermatologist and catch up. With seasonal changes it might be best to give a visit to your dermatologist to make sure you enjoy the holiday season as much as you can!

THE HANDY MAN
A
neighbor from the States just passed away. I considered this neighbor a great friend. Surrounding neighbors would agree this guy was awesome. My neighbor was what I called a handy man. He was one of those guys who had the skill and heart to do a little bit of everything for anybody. As I begin to reflect on my own life I’ve wondered, what would my friends or neighbors say about me? I want my children to remember me as someone who loved God above all things and loved others. There is fruit produced from that kind of statement. If a neighbor is in need, I should be there to give a hand. If a stranger makes a request, I should reasonably respond without hesitation. My children should witness me treating their mother with reverence, affection, and love to die for. I’m worried right now that my neighbors think I’m shy, quiet, and keep to myself and that my children will mimic my temper. They hear the things I say to their mother and repeat those things when they play with their siblings or friends. Men, I believe we should acquire these skills of a handy man. Whatever talent or gifts you have acquired, use them to serve others. Use your hands and feet in a selfless way to benefit someone else. Expect nothing in return. When a thank you or gratitude is not returned it will not matter because we served without expectation. Throwing money at a cause is worthy and beneficial. Where your heart is, your wallet will follow. But putting your hands on something can be fun and rewarding to the heart. On the flip side of the coin, not all serving is fun. Serving is sometimes a sacrifice of the body and an interruption of your time. Men, this topic is important because it changes us. One, it changes the way you think and treat others. When you selflessly invest into 16

the lives of others, you see people in a different way. You become less angry with petty things people do and more understanding of what makes people tick. Two, it changes your purpose on this giant ball of land and water. Maybe being here is not at all random. It is possible you were internally or physically built in a way to serve others. These days, I’m on a mission to find ways to help people in this country. Being a handy man for some may be easy but for people like me it takes effort. I don’t like people that much. My time is valuable and so is my stuff. In my short research, I have come across a few things that could benefit us all. TUTOR: Use that brain of yours and tutor a student for free. This is an amazing gift to a struggling parent and an example of a great neighbor. MENTOR: There are a few men I have come across who are a great “third” adult in a kid’s life. Those of us fortunate to have had one, remember simple trips to McDonalds, a movie, camping out, or a sports event. A mentor has huge influence on shaping the life of a child. OASIS: The compound connected to the Oasis Hospital has nearly thirty religious groups meeting including the Catholic Church down the road. Many of these groups provide avenues for serving among each other and importantly their community. THE RED CRESCENT: Go online or submit an application and you could be helping a large organization do great things locally and around the Middle East. GIFTS: Those of you who have been gifted mechanically can help with a neighbor’s car. Grab your favorite power tool and go help the single lady next door hang her curtains. Or simply, use a little muscle to help someone who is moving in or out. These are a few ideas for those of you who are looking for purpose or for people who are not content with what they have. Try some of these ideas and see what can happen. Doing this for someone may just become something you need yourself one day.

have been living in the UAE with my wife and two boys for just over two years and as parents we often draw comparisons with Canada in regards to the advantages of raising our children in this country. It is quite clear that we enjoy enhanced peace of mind when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction in the UAE, as these issues do not seem to be at epidemic levels. Having said this, should we now sit back on our laurels with the belief that our children and society in general are immune to this menace? The answer is absolutely not! Agreed, the problems associated with drug abuse and addiction may not be at par with other countries but it is a global concern and we are by no means spared these issues in the UAE. In fact the levels of abuse have seen a sharp increase over the past three years according to the NRC (National Rehabilitation Center). The center specializes in the treatment of Emiratis with drug and alcohol addictions and the alarming recent spike includes both genders and a disturbing number of adolescents. About 3,500 addicts have been admitted for treatment at the NRC since it opened in 2002 and the vast majority of them in the past three years. The most common forms of addictions are to alcohol, prescription opiates (such as Tramadol), illegal opiates (including heroin) and amphetamines.
Despite the presence of harsh laws in an effort to curtail the problem of trafficking, the UAE is considered an international travel hub and as such a ‘hot spot’ for such illegal activity. While the trafficking of drugs is a major offense associated with severe punishment, the end result is often addiction; a social problem that should be recognized first and foremost as a health issue requiring treatment and public awareness instead of being hidden away in denial. The NRC is taking major steps in the right direction to address the problem with its “Unplugged” program that teaches school children about the hazards of drug and alcohol abuse as well as a crackdown on “doctor shopping”, where addicts get multiple prescriptions by soliciting the help of numerous different practitioners. Although the actions of the NRC are praiseworthy, the responsibility of action cannot rest solely on the shoulders of the government. It is paramount that we as a community recognize the problem, step up to the plate in our own homes and attack it at its source through proper mentoring, in an effort to not only find solutions, but to prevent the issues from arising in the first place. Prevention is and will always remain far more effective than treatment! Any stigma associated with addiction must be retired so that families can feel comfortable with open discussions related to the issues of addiction and seek the professional help necessary to remedy the problem. No country, no matter how rich or poor is immune to the social devastation caused by addiction and substance abuse. In order to remain in control of our society and the future of our planet, which rests in the hands of our greatest resource, our children, we must play an active role in creating the necessary public awareness and education to stop the potential epidemic in its tracks. As a community magazine we feel that we have a responsibility to provide an essential platform to help achieve this public awareness and plan to do just that in collaboration with the NRC moving into the future. We live in a great country and Al Ain happens to be the home of the biggest majority of Emirate nationals and boasts the highest proportion of government schools in the nation. The future of the UAE is being educated right here in our back yards and we have the power to make a difference in keeping this future safe. Our children, families and friends are precious and we cannot and should not ever afford to lose them at the hands of a menace that we have the means to fight and defeat. We will do our part and we ask that you join us in reclaiming and preventing the destruction of what is most important to us all; our human resources and the opportunity for each and every one of us to reach their full potential!

Healthy Home
O
ur homes today are not just roofs over our heads or a place to sleep at night, but rather a welcoming place that we share with our families and friends. By being aware of how your environment influences your health and the health of your loved ones, you can change your home into a home that encourages health and promotes well-being.
EAT FOR HEALTH: Healthy food should be on hand, easy to reach and plentiful to encourage consumption. • Stock your kitchen so that it encourages healthier eating. Keep plenty of fruit, vegetables and healthy snacks on hand. Put a fruit basket with in easy reach to encourage healthy enjoyment for all. • If you stock plenty of chips and sweetened beverages at home they will be eaten first. If you can, limit the amount of unhealthy food at home and keep smaller portions in places that are not so convenient, it will discourage them from being consumed. • You can have a menu list of dishes that you like to cook on certain days so everyone knows what is coming up and it will make it easier for you to shop and cook. Keep a few recipes or cookbooks handy that have dishes you can make quickly and with healthy ingredients, for the times when you are too tired or uninspired to whip up something great. • Involve children in packing their own school lunches by making easy to see checklists that will show them all the healthy choices that they have around them. Do this for breakfast too, so that there are a variety of interesting and healthy things to eat. • Research a little on apartment or kitchen gardens. Many of these are indoors and require little sunlight to grow your own herbs and little plants. • Maintain a clean home so that allergens and irritants such as dust are kept to a minimum. Excessive cleaning products should be avoided especially around young children. A bucket of hot water and plain detergent can go a long way in cleaning. It’s the technique and a thorough scrub that is most important! • Consider air purifiers. There are many economical brands that are available today and have a large coverage area. Check the filters of these regularly for cleaning and replace them when they need to be replaced. Bring in the fresh air unless you have sources of pollution nearby that will only make matters worse. SLEEP FOR HEALTH: Good quality sleep makes a great difference to your health. Make sure there are areas of rest in your home where anyone of the household can escape for a moment of peace during the rush of the day and enjoy good quality sleep at night. • A good sleeping environment needs quiet, dim light or darkness, a slightly cool temperature and a bed that is comfortable. Try to keep these things in mind when creating your special place for sleep. • Keep televisions, stereos, handheld electronic devices away from your sleep zone. These lead to excessive stimulation and can disturb sleep patterns. EXERCISE FOR HEALTH: You don’t have to have a separate gym at home to improve workouts for your family. • Invest in a good DVD or a set of hand weights, a simple exercise mat for yoga and other space saving objects to help you get moving. Store them where you can take them out for easy use so that you will use them regularly. • Buddy up with a family member for exercise, this way you can spend quality time with each other and motivate each other. This increases the chances of you sticking to an exercise program and being accountable to each other. Inspire each other by using words of encouragement, tracking data such as kilometres achieved or calories burned. • To help kids move more, you can get them toys that encourage them to be active rather than stationary. Keep these toys handy and interact with them when they are playing to keep up the interest. • Make a calendar that shows the kids' practices, parent workouts, and active family outings. You can mark a family fitness challenge on this too. You can incorporate many changes to make things in your home better for you and your family. Let your home reflect your achievements, your inspirations, your goals and your health.

Khalid Al Balushi, A Man of the Dunes By JJ Green
I
think it’s safe to say that for most people new to this region, a very coveted event on the list of things to do is the infamous ‘desert safari’. But one of the biggest problems for Al Ainians in regards to booking one of these adventures is the lack of such tour companies in our city. Most of us opt for companies based in Dubai and as a result end up having to travel considerable distances away from the gorgeous red dunes of Al Ain.
In this issue of The Source, it is our pleasure to introduce to you one of our very own Al Ain gentlemen, who’s pride and joy for many years now, has been sailing over the dunes of our spectacular desert in off road vehicles and is busy sharing this passion with anyone and everyone that would like to participate. Khalid Al Balushi was born in Al Ain and his passion for dune bashing has grown into Phoenix Tourism and Desert Safari, a respected company that serves up adventure in a very unique style. 22

Was it always a dream of yours to be in this business? “Ever since I was old enough to drive, I have been challenging my driving skills out in the sand and when I wasn’t busy studying in Dubai you could always find me in the desert taming the dunes!” How did it all begin?” My Uncle had a similar tour company in Dubai and would invite me out to join in the fun. He soon realized that my driving skills were better than those of his own drivers and quickly convinced me to work with him.” Khalid worked with his uncle for roughly 3 years and on the advice of a couple of friends, decided along with his brother, to form his own company, Phoenix. For the last ten years Phoenix has been his pride and joy and the company has grown to include 11 4x4’s, one tour bus and 22 employees of which everyone of the drivers is a local! He believes in providing his customers with an experience that comes right from the hearts of the indigenous people of this region. Where is Phoenix based? “The company’s head office is in Abu Dhabi but I live in Al Ain and our camp is located near Al Khatim, which is not too far from Al Ain.” It is an ideal location as it provides a landscape rich in the many sand colours of the Emirates, and is

conveniently situated close to two major cities to cut down on travel time for our many clients. Although the camp is near Al Khatim and most of his business unfolds here, Phoenix also offers tours to Liwa, Oman and most areas of the Emirates. The company can handle a maximum capacity of 200 persons and will operate with a minimum of 20. The tours last about six hours but can also include an overnight camping scenario for the more adventurous. The activities include, camel rides, a farm visit with sheep goats, birds etc., as well as quad biking, sand skiing, falcon shows, local dance, belly dancing and a scrumptious array of food to satisfy your hunger! What separates you from the competition?” First and foremost on our agenda is the safety of our clients, and as such, Phoenix employs only the best local drivers along with utilizing vehicles equipped with the latest in comfort and safety technology. Your safety and enjoyment are always first on our list.” Do you have any plans for future expansion in Al Ain? ”We are always looking to expand and I am very keen on grounding an affiliate company in my home town that provides high tech luxury car and limousine services.” Before ending my conversation with the energetic adventurer, I asked Khalid if he had any words of advice for the many young Emirates still waiting to build their dreams. He responded with, “find your passion and once you have accomplished this, introduce this passion to your entrepreneurial spirit; then hard work and inspiration will lead you to success and freedom!” The next time you are looking for a local desert adventure you can find it right here at home courtesy of Khalid Al Balushi and his Phoenix team. Traditional Dance in The UAE
M
usic and dance in the UAE forms a part of the culture and reflects the rich heritage of this country. There are at least three types of traditional dance in the UAE. Music and dance are common at most of the festivals and cultural events. People express their joy by also dancing at weddings in the UAE. Drums are an integral part of folk music and everyone attending a festive occasion is encouraged to join the line or circle of swaying dancers, and dance to the accompaniment of tambourines. While young girls dance by swinging their black tresses and swaying their bodies to the strong beat of the music, men re-enact battles fought or successful hunting expeditions. Ayyalah is among the most popular folk dances in UAE. It represents a battle signifying the defeat of the enemy and the celebration of 24

victory. Ayyalah is usually performed in groups of up to 200 men and organized in such a manner that they face each other. It looks beautiful when they take turns reciting poems and brandishing swords on the beats of traditional drums and tambourines. Harbiya is another popular dance and like Ayyalah, Harbiya is also performed by two lines of men confronting each other, but the recitation is based on the repetition of unaccompanied melodic phrases. Other popular traditional dances in the UAE include the Liwa. It is generally performed to a rapid tempo and loud drumbeat. This is also based on the theme of a war song whose purpose is to raise the morale of the fighting men. Haban (also known as the Khamiri, or the Khayali) is another major folk dance in the UAE. Another popular traditional dance performed by tribes is the Mated, based on Sufi traditions to celebrate the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed. It’s different from other traditional dances because of its relation to a religious occasion. In another dance form, women perform by tossing their hair about their heads in big circles. But apart from the traditional forms of music and dance in the UAE, other forms of music and dance have also become popular and are a vibrant part of the night life in this country.

HELP YOUR KIDS AND TEENS TO
SAVE MONEY
T
A penny saved is a penny earned. - Benjamin Franklin oo many kids spend all their money as soon as they get it. Only 20% of kids save money and do it consistently every month. Help kids save their money—and teach them to save well. Here’s how:
Talk about how you save money and why. Kids learn by watching and listening to their parents. Be honest about the ups and downs of saving money. If it were always easy to save money, more people would do it. Keep talking about saving money and money in general. Find other adults who save money make them role models for your kids.
and
Get your child a savings bank and a spending bank. (You can make your own out of shoeboxes.) Every time your child gets money, encourage her to put some into both boxes. When you shop with your child, don’t get into the habit of always buying him something. Say, “We need to save our money. It’s important not to buy something every time we go to the store.” Talk about saving in a positive way. Explain what you’re saving for and how you’re excited about that. Give kids allowances on a weekly basis. This helps kids learn how to manage money. Create ways for them to save some of what they get. Some families create three banks for elementaryage children (and even other age children) so that there’s a saving box, a spending box, and a giving box.
28
The Source
Help your child set saving goals. For example, if your child wants to buy a video game or a book, create concrete steps to help them save their money to buy it. Make savings goals short and easy to reach. A 6- to 9-year-old child will have a much easier time saving for something over a twoto four-week period rather than a year. Talk about advertising and how kids are being targeted to spend money. Help them make sense of the messages bombarding them. Encourage them to save money instead of spending it so quickly. Show how you save and how saving helps you to reach financial goals that you could not otherwise. For example, save money for a nice piece of clothing or to go out for dinner. Set a budget when it’s time to do back-to-school shopping. Be clear on what’s in your budget and what your kids need to save for. By high school, a lot of teenagers have discovered more things they want to buy, which makes it hard for them to save.Encourage them to slow down their spending and put away money for saving. When your teenager wants something she can’t afford, create small jobs around your home (or help your teen find neighbors and family members who might have some jobs). Then help your teenager set saving goals to buy what he or she wants. By this age, teenagers should be able to save for a longer period of time and wait before buying something they want. Monitor how your child h a n d l e s money. Talk honestly about your child’s financial strengths and weaknesses. Keep talking about the value of saving money.

Qasr Al Hosn Festival ABU DHABI, JANUARY 14, 2014
Qasr Al Hosn Festival will open next month on the site of Abu Dhabi’s oldest structure dating back to the second half of the 18th century. Organised by Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA), Qasr Al Hosn Festival will run from 20 February to 1 March 2014 with an exciting program that includes guided tours of the fort, public programs and an internationally renowned show adapted to reflect the elements of the UAE culture. On February 21, Qasr Al Hosn Festival will be open to women and children only. HE Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority, said: “Qasr Al Hosn represents the foundation of the nation’s capital and symbolizes more than two and a half centuries of Emirati heritage and cultural development. Qasr Al Hosn Festival is an annual opportunity to celebrate this magnificent national monument and iconic symbol of Abu Dhabi’s proud history and identity, and to engage our community in the development of Qasr Al Hosn restoration program. For the first time in several years, Qasr Al Hosn Festival presents an opportunity to its visitors to explore the historic fort as it undergoes renovation. The interior foyer will be partially open to festival visitors for guided tours and educational activities for children and youth. Another unique aspect of this year’s festival is that visitors will be able to visit the historic National Consultative Council Chamber located adjacent to the Fort walls, where many important historical decisions were made.
The Cultural Foundation will also include a unique space, Gahwa (coffee in Arabic), a contemporary take on the Emirati coffee tradition where guests can learn about the Gahwa’s history and ritual, and taste or buy various types of traditional Gahwa. Qasr Al Hosn Festival Area will offer four distinct experiences revealing different aspects of Abu Dhabi’s history and culture. Each area - Desert, Oasis, Marine and Abu Dhabi Island – will present interactive public programs for audiences of all demographics, including heritage workshops, traditional performances, celebrations highlighting Emirati skills and traditions, and guided tours and exhibitions. One of the highlights of the festival will be the feature show ‘Cavalia at Qasr Al Hosn’, an equestrian stage show created by Cirque du Soleil co-founder Normand Latourelle. The show has been specially adapted to be staged as part of the Qasr Al Hosn festival. The multidisciplinary production - featuring more than 40 highly-trained horses performing alongside performers and musicians - will make its regional debut at Qasr Al Hosn Festival. Throughout the celebrations, a team of Emirati “Ambassadors” from different educational institutions around the UAE will be on site to guide visitors through the various elements of the festival public program and provide information. For more information about Qasr Al Hosn Festival, please visit www.qasralhosnfestival.ae For more information about Cavalia, please visit www.cavalia.net
In the Qasr Al Hosn Centre, a public exhibition will enable visitors to delve deeper into Qasr Al Hosn’s history. The exhibition will be complemented by a series of oral narratives about Abu Dhabi’s history and people. In addition to the Qasr Al Hosn fort being partially opened to the public, areas of the adjacent modern heritage building, the Cultural Foundation, will be opened during the festival, and will stage a series of live performances, poetry recitals and a series of films produced by emerging UAE artists.

In Search of the Northern Lights On a winter expedition along Norway’s beautiful coast, our columnist discovers a landscape covered in pure white snow. By day, the snowy mountains reflect the polar twilight while, at night, nature’s very own spectacular light show illuminates the sky
I
By Marianne Makdisi
n December, our plane flew across a wintry scene of snow and ice and landed at 3pm in Tromso, Norway, the largest town north of the Arctic Circle, surrounded by towering mountains. Although it was only mid-afternoon, the sky was pitch black with a shining crescent moon, the temperature was -10 degrees C and snow was piled high against the airport terminal walls. Travelling by bus to our ship, the MS Kong Harald, we passed through the pretty town of Tromso with twinkling Christmas decorations in the windows. On board the ship, our first meal was true Norwegian cuisine with locally sourced fish, dried reindeer meat and cloudberries with
cream.
That evening, to everyone’s delight, the captain announced that the Northern Lights were visible to the front of the ship. Donning hats, scarves, boots and jackets, we congregated on the icy decks to view the white moving sheets of light in the sky, amid the brilliant stars. This arc of wisping, fluttering light that appears right above you in the dark is one of Mother Nature’s most spectacular phenomena. Through the camera lens, the Aurora Borealis appeared an amazing green in colour. The next day, we docked at Honningsvag and enjoyed the magnificent sub-Arctic landscape as we crossed the 71st parallel on an excursion to the North Cape, the northernmost point on the European continent. In summer, you might come across herds of grazing reindeer and a small camp belonging to the Sami people, indigenous to this part of the world. The North Cape

plateau rises 307 metres almost vertically from the ice cold Arctic Ocean. We stood and wondered at the view in the twilight while the wind blew and light snow fell. On returning to our ship, we were welcomed back with hot chocolate and warm apple pie. Approximately 15 kilometres west of the North Cape is one of the world’s most exciting nature reserves, Gjesvaerstappan. From the boat we studied flocks of puffins, together with large numbers of kittiwake gulls. During the nesting season, this area teems with life as mighty sea eagles hover above in search of prey, while guillemots, razorbills, cormorants, Arctic skuas and the large northern gannet fill the air with a cacophony of shrieks and screeches. The following day at the Norway/Russia border town of Kirkenes, you could take part in a dog sledge ride. The huskies were harnessed to your sledge, eagerly waiting to transport you across the frozen landscape. A real adrenalin-fuelled adventure! Another activity you could join was a snowmobile trip across one of Europe’s most extreme and exciting natural areas. Some of Norway’s best instructors ensure that proper training is given before you hop onto your own snowmobile for this once-in-a-lifetime trip, experiencing the snow-clad valleys and fresh winter air. Cruising down the coast of Norway, calling in for short stops at fishing villages such as Vardo and Batsfjord, we arrived at Hammerfest, which is the most northern town in the world, established in 1789 and the first town in Northern Europe to introduce electric street lighting powered solely by water.
my world Tromso in winter
Hammerfest lies roughly at the same degree of latitude as the northernmost parts of Siberia and Alaska, the islands north of Canada and the centre of Greenland. But the effect of the warming Gulf Stream makes it more habitable. Trapping expeditions and trade with Russia brought growth to the town, as did the expanding trawler fleet, which supplied regular catches for the developing fish processing industry. The polar bear is the mascot of Hammerfest and we visited the Polar Bear Club, a small museum full of exhibits from the town’s hunting and fishing past, as well as a collection of stuffed birds and, of course, a heavyweight example of the white polar bear. Our cruise ended back in Tromso and what better way to finish than a midnight concert in the Arctic Cathedral with its exquisite glass mosaic window. As the candle lights flickered, this elegant church was filled with the sounds of the most beautiful Norwegian folk songs, as well as some wonderfully powerful classical and sacred selections. This short five-day tour was a magical experience in a winter wonderland.

Struggles of our Life Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn’t know how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed. Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot and ground coffee beans in the third pot. He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter, moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup. Turning to her, he asked. “Daughter, what do you see?” “Potatoes, eggs and coffee,” she hastily replied. “Look closer”, he said, “and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face. “Father, what does this mean?” she asked. He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same adversity-the boiling water. However, each one reacted differently. The potato went in strong, hard and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it became soft and weak. The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard. However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new.

“Which one are you?” he asked his daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?” Moral: In life, things happen around us, things happen to us, but the only thing that truly matters is how you choose to react to it and what you make out of it. Life is all about learning, adopting and converting all the struggles that we experience into something positive.
